Pink Factory 2023 International Project HONGCHEON CROSSING: Long Distance Short Cuts of Life

Lecture: “Global Mobility and Weak Technology” by Alex Taek-Gwang Lee

This lecture seeks to redefine the relationship between art and technology through the exploration of planetary thinking, examining the disappearance of locality as a result of global mobility enabled by digital technologies.

Alex Taek-Gwang Lee is a philosopher and cultural critic. He is a professor of cultural studies and a founding director of the Center for Technology in Humanities at Kyung Hee University, Korea. He was invited as a visiting professor at the Centre for Culture Media and Governance, Jamia Millia Islamia University, India and an international visiting scholar at Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. He served as an academic adviser for Gwangju Biennale in 2017 and as a program manager for the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2021. He is a board member of The International Consortium of Critical Theory Programs (ICCTP) and Asia Theories Network (ATN). He edited the third volume of The Idea of Communism (2016) and Deleuze, Guattari and the Schizoanalysis of Postmedia (2023). He published articles in journals such as Telos, Deleuze and Guattari Studies and Philosophy Today, and chapters in The Bloomsbury Handbook of World Theory (2021), Thinking with Animation (2021), Back to the ’30s?: Recurring Crises of Capitalism, Liberalism and Democracy(2020) and Balibar/Wallerstein’s “Race, Nation, Class”: Rereading a Dialogue for Our Times (2018).

Artist Research - Nobuhiro Nakanishi (Layering)

About - Nobuhiro is a Japanese artist, born in Fukuoka, Japan 1976. He studied sculpture at Tokyo Zokei University gaining Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Kyoto City of University of Art, of which he received an MA in 2002 when graduating. There is no more information on Nakanishi’s life, so I will mostly be talking about his work. He mostly works to create immersive installation experiences which attempt to capture the passage of time by using photography, sculpture and prolonged observation.

Nakanishi’s work typically involves presenting humans or objects in 3D interpretations using various media, such as wood, stone, clay and metal. He uses his art to express his thoughts around the antithetical ideas of existence and absence, the material and the non-material, the visible and the invisible, sense and conceptual territories such as consciousness, thoughts, memories and time, inviting the viewer into a mysterious and engaging experience.

Nakanishi’s installations render the abstracts and the ephemeral through serialised images on plexiglass panels, which he uses to portray the topics of absence, spatial-temporal perception and sensory experiences. Their work is typically produced as a series, by combining individual images together to produce an absract experience of the depicted subject, such as a sunset or the physical encounter with nature.

Nakanishi’s ‘Layered Drawings’ are created with photographs of environments that are taken over a long period of time and then chronologically arranged on acrylic panels to recreate temporal progressions, with small variations within each frame. This allows the art to be perceived where time has ‘no shape or boundary’, letting the experience differ from person to person. Within the gaps of the images, viewers can use their personal experience to add their perspective to the artists documentation, since each image has captured a different moment in the places history.

Nakanishi’s ‘Stripe Drawings’ depict landscapes in which distances and physical boundaries dissolve, such as a landscape covered in fog. For example; made from countless fine pencil lines produced at set intervals, the lines and spaces create shapes that appear to encroach on one another, yet coexist on the same plane - Stripe Drawing – Eclipse 3 (2013). Nakanishi implies that when the public track said lines, recreates the ‘physical experience’ of the artists free-hand drawing process, thus making the connection between the viewers and the artwork.

Nobuhiro Nakanishi has had a good amount of exhibitions, solo and group. Solo exhibitions include Gunma Museum of Art (2016); Yumiko Chiba Associates, Tokyo (2015); Kashya Hilderbrand, London (2014); Joyce Gallery, Beijing (2013); Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (2011); Gallery Nomart, Osaka (2010); and Osaka Contemporary Art Center (2006). Group exhibitions include Asia Culture Center, Gwangju (2015); Art Stage Singapore (2014); Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Aichi (2012); The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama (2011); 7th International Ink Painting Biennial, Shenzhen (2010); Hangaram Arts Center Museum, Seoul (2009); and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2007).

Quote - “We are all subject to the passing of time, yet each of us feels and perceives it in our own way,” Nakaniski says on his website. “Time itself has no shape or boundary and cannot be fixed or grasped. When we look at the photographs in these sculptures, we attempt to fill in the gaps between the individual images. We draw from our physical experiences to fill in missing time and space, both ephemeral and vague. In this series, I attempt to depict time and space as sensations shared by both viewer and artist.”

Thoughts - I’ve chosen to research Nobuhiro Nakanishi as I find his use of layer highly inspirational, I’d like to create something similar with my own work. I love the build up of colour, depth and dimension which are qualities rife within his art, creating visually intricate pieces that the viewer can dissect at each individual layer. I’d like to explore with his method of images on see through 2D material, to find how I too can create a scene that bring the viewer closer.

BTS Hometowns

Rm - Ilsan

RM was born in Ilsan, the home of the largest artificial lake in Asia, Lake Park. Lake Park features beautiful wildflowers and plants, as well as a musical fountain, and it has been used as the setting for a number of Korean shows. Lake Park hosts the Goyang Korea Flower Show, so book your trip in the spring to see it in full bloom.

If parks aren’t your thing, no worries. Ilsan is home to an impressive commercial district with hundreds of places to shop and dine at. You’ll also find the production studios for MBC and SBS here.

Jin - Gwacheon

Jin’s hometown is close to Seoul, in the Seoul National Capital Area. It is home to Seoul Grand Park Zoo, the first zoo in the Korean peninsula. It was founded in 1909 and is still a popular tourist destination today.

Once you’ve visited the exotic animals at Seoul Grand Park Zoo and explored all of Seoul Grand Park’s hiking trails, why not stop by Seoul Land? This amusement park has approximately 40 rides, movie theatres, and hosts festivals throughout the year.

Gwacheon also has something for intellectuals. Here you’ll find the National Museum of Contemporary Art and Gwacheon National Science Museum.

Suga and V - Daegu

The birthplace of Suga and V is the fourth-largest city in South Korea, after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon, and it has plenty of things to entertain you. In addition to beautiful parks and mountains, you can also go back in time while exploring preserved villages like Otgol Village and Inheung Village.

There is also plenty of shopping, museums, theatres, sports events, and festivals to check out throughout the year.

J - Hope - Gwangju

J-Hope’s birthplace is located in the heart of the agricultural Jeolla region, and it’s famous for its diverse cuisine. If you visit, be sure to book a table at Cheongwon Momil. This restaurant has been a staple of Gwangju’s cuisine scene the 1960s.

You can also visit the Gwangju Asia Culture Center in downtown Gwangju, which celebrates the city’s art, culture, and history.

Jimin and Jungkook - Busan

If you want to get a feel for the place that raised Jimin and Jungkook, you’ll need to travel to Busan, the second-most populous city in South Korea. This seaside town is an ocean lover’s dream and the perfect getaway.

Want to relax? Visit Hur Shim Chung Spa, one of the oldest spas in Korea. Want to eat? Fill your belly with seafood from Busan’s famous Jagalchi Fish Market.

Don’t forget to take some photos at the colorful Gamcheon Culture Village. You can also stop by the cliffside Taejongdae Resort Park, the idyllic Gwangalli Beach, and temples such as Haedong Yonggungsa.

Over the past two years, I have been working on a series of studies of the migration of birds in and out of the Philippines, a kindred project to a feature-length film I'm writing called "The Wild Duck", inspired by memories of my father's migration to the United States in the early 2000s. The project aims to deal with migration in many forms and times. Birds, and ducks in particular, are like role models for humans-they find ways to survive by various means across varied terrain. I hope to bring together a mix of species, migrating across different generations of moving image media. The project started in 2018 and has taken on various forms, from multi-channel video installations to experimental outdoor screenings and theatrical screenings. The project is still ongoing as I feel there is an urgent need to expand the length and scope of the work. The work thus far has been in parallel to the birth of my daughter, so I was limited to footage I was able to shoot in two locations a few hours by car from Manila. I still have my limitations as a mother during a nation-wide quarantine. So this time, I would like to work with other bird enthusiasts to include found footage of birds sourced from all over the Philippines. During my research, I made friends with several bird experts and birdwatchers, and I realized that they each have a wealth of footage from their own birdwatching.  This new work (Arcade 4Walls edition) was created specifically for the Arcade 4Walls media screen in Gwangju. At a time when people are forced to question our way of life, birds can offer much to learn from. They are really citizens of the world, belonging to several places at the same time.

About the Program: Media Wall Showcase Arcade 4WALLS The Media Wall is a 75m×16m screen visible from the Asia Plaza and the Forest of Light. Medial Wall Showcase < Arcade 4WALLS > is a tour exhibition featuring public art projects created by six artists and inspired by various themes including Gwangju, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and humans and nature in the era of climate change.

     Mariah Reodica is a filmmaker, writer, media archivist, and musician based in Manila, Philippines. Her background as a musician--not formally trained, but ouido,--reflects in her practices of filmmaking and writing. Her works tackle narrative-making in oblique yet intuitive manners. She is currently a lecturer at the University of the Philippines Film Institute and the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.

     She was awarded the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Art Criticism at the 2019 Ateneo Art Awards, and currently maintains the column Platforms in The Philippine Star’s Arts and Culture section. Her writing has appeared in Perro Berde, hcmf// (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival), CNN Life Philippines, ANCX, and other publications.

      Eerie (2019), a feature-length film she co-wrote with award-winning director Mikhail Red, won the National Asian Fantastic Films Award at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival 2017. Her works have been shown or performed in Bangkok Biennale 2018; Manila Biennale 2018; the Asia Culture Center, Gwangju; and the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video, and Music Festival 2018, among others. She graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Arts in film, cum laude, and also studied at Chuo University, Tokyo.

       She is also a guitarist and composer for a number independent music projects, from fuzz rock to primitive Americana. Her band The Buildings released their second album Heaven is a Long Exhale on Japanese label Call and Response Records, and has been featured in NME Asia.

One True Seven💜

Fan girls are not just fan girls, we are dreamers.

They call it Hallyu, the Korean wave: the idea that South Korean pop culture has grown in prominence to become a major driver of global culture seen in everything from Korea dramas to Korean skincare regimens, and at the heart of Hallyu is the ever-growing popularity of Kpop - short for Korean pop music.

Kpop has become a truly global phenomenon thanks to its distinctive blend of addictive melodies, slick choreography, production values and the endless parade of attractive South Korean performer who spend years in grueling studio learning to sing and dance in synchronized perfection.

One of the top Entertainment companies in Korea is Big Hit Entertainment, from where my One True Seven BANGTAN SONYEONDAN came from.

I am a fan of BTS, otherwise known as an A.RM.Y. It was April of 2016 as I first watched BTS music video specifically "I NEED U" who suddenly popped up as I was browsing YouTube. After listening to it I actively follow BTS and eventually become a Stan.

Bangtan Sonyeondan has 7 talented handsone member forned in Seoul in 2013, literally means, "Bulletproof Boy Scouts". According to J-hope, the name signifies the groups desire to block out stereotypes, criticisms and expectations that aim on adolescent like bullets.

Kim Namjoon (Rapper and leader)

The official leader of BTS, RM was the first member scouted by BTS founder Bang Si-Hyuk. He is known for his rapping and collaborated with artist like Wale and even was the first of the group to release his own rap mix tape. He’s the only member of the group who speaks English fluently. In September 2018, he delivered an English-language speech to the U.N General Assembly in New York City supporting youth empowerment.

Min Yoongi (Rapper and producer)

Suga is the second oldest BTS member, and is often described as the dad of the group because he takes care of things around the dorm for the others. He started as an underground rapper with the stage name of Gloss. He is known for his rapid-fire rhymes. He is also a producer having contribution to award-winning songs on other artists' projects as well of many BTS own tracks.

Jung Hoseok (Rapper and dancer)

J-Hope is one of the best dancers in the group, and also a literal sunshine angel! He is the third member who joined after RM and Suga. He was first known for his dancing and was a part of an underground dance crew in his province of Gwangju. He also released his own mix tape in March entitled Hope World.

Park Jimin (Singer and dancer)

Discovered by Bighit Entertainment during High School, Jimin is known for his sharp dance moves and he focused on modern dance. He is known for his impressive abs. Jimin is perhaps one of the most affectionate members, towards his fellow band mates and fans. But he can also be quite self-conscious of both his skills as an entertainer and his looks.

Kim Seokjin (Singer)

Jin is the oldest BTS member, although he doesn’t often act like it. He is known for his dad jokes, describing himself as “Worldwide handsome” in response the times his pictures have gone viral, and winking or blowing kisses to the camera whenever it lands on him. Jin was originally studying acting and was infamously spotted on the streets by a Big Hit Entertainment staff member. 

Kim Taehyung (Singer and dancer)

V, also known as Taehyung, Tae, or TaeTae was the last member of BTS to be revealed. He actually did not even mean to audition for Big Hit but had joined a friend for moral support and was convinced by a staff member to try out as well. One word to describe V would be, unique. His voice easily stands out from the other vocal line because of his soulful and deep tone. He loves to play around with fashion and has a great appreciation for art as well. 

Jeon Jungkook (Singer, dancer and center)

Jungkook is the youngest BTS member, also known as their Golden Maknae because he seems to be good at basically everything. Along with his vocal and dancing skills, Jungkook is also quite athletic and artistic. He was also the only trainee that was sent to America for dance training prior to their debut. By the time the group did debut, he was just 15 years old. Jungkook is my ultimate bias and the love of my life.

BTS is now the biggest boy band in the world, topping charts and setting records as they continue on their world tour. 2018 has been an extremely fruitful year for BTS as they have achieved many awards for their music and also become one of the most influential people to date. Gaining even more international coverage from Rolling Stone, Forbes, Vogue, CNN and so on. After releasing their third full length album “LOVE YOURSELF: Tear” in May, one of the biggest events that happened to BTS is most probably their world premiere of ‘FAKE LOVE’ performance on Billboard Music Awards 2018 (BBMAs). In addition to that, they had also claimed the ‘Top Social Artist’ award twice in a row, since 2017. Aside from international achievements, they have also recently walked home with 9 different awards on Mnet Asian Music Awards 2018 (MAMA). During Melon Music Awards 2018 (MMA), they received 7 awards and also 7 in Asia Artist Awards 2018 (AAA)! It is expected that they will also be sweeping even more awards on the upcoming Seoul Music Awards 2019 and also Golden Disc Awards 2019.

No one loves anything more than a fan girl loves her fandom. My love for them can be obsessive, weird, overenthusiastic and extreme, but it's something I am unapologetically proud of. I am an avid fan girl who actively goes to any BTS events whether it is a BTS member birthday celebration, movie block screening and Fan gatherings.

I am a part of Army of Cebu. As a fan, I do love buying merchandise. I have tons of BTS merchandise at home. As a collector, just looking at the albums, magazines, DVDs, photo cards, and all the stuffs that I have accumulated all these years gives me a sense of happiness. I also feel that buying their merchandise and even the products they are endorsing is my way of supporting them as a fan. 

I found BTS during a very low point in my life and I am really grateful for that. They taught me to have a positive outlook in life. They taught me to love and embrace my flaws and turn it into a positive one. BTS is my comfort zone. They let me realize that I am worth it. Just like them, I will run endlessly towards my dream.

No matter how many of us are in the crowd, when they say "Saranghae ARMY," I feel like they are addressing me and the importance of my existence. When they give out advice for us through interviews, when they put out lyrics that really mirrors the current generation's situations or even just mundane lyrics that we can relate to, I feel like they know me personally. They are just so humble and real. They never forget where they started, never take their feet off the ground, and no matter how big they have gotten, they stay true to themselves. 

From desserts to the seas, we were always together.

I had the thought of what korean shows and movies are really important in korea; things like the simpsons, star wars, friends, etc. where its important culturally and influnced korean society. Getting two birds with one stone of practicing korean and getting some cultural information as well.

Infinite Challenge - 무한도전 predating running man its been called "the nation's variety show" and "Korea's real first variety" PLOT similar to a challenge-based reality television programs but the challenges are often absurd or impossible, so the program takes on a more satirical comedy aspect

I Live Alone - 나 혼자 산다 PLOT showing celebs daily lives living alone

The Return of Superman - 슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다 PLOT celeb fathers have to take care of their young children without the mothers help while she takes a much needed break

Boys Over Flowers - 꽃보다 남자 started hallyu wave in 2009 within asian countries, probably the most popular kdrama PLOT a normal girl attends a rich prestigious private school after saving a student's life. She stands up the popular rich well loved bullies and ends up developing a relaionship with them
