I just realised that in most the dramas I've seen featuring Wu Lei, his characters give such wonderful heart eyes to the FL. Those soulful stares are so effective and knee-melting.

Then I realised it's just that his characters are handsome men who have basically zero rizz and are socially awkward.

To wit:

Lin Yiyang playing nice with the girl he met in a snowstorm.

Ling Buyi at breakfast, freaking out all his in-laws. Except for Grandma Cheng since she's practically Teflon.

Ashile Sun trying to figure out how to treat a wounded maiden without outraging her modesty. Which is pretty sweet for a barbarian warlord, no?

He does these roles so well and I am in awe of his talent.

One of the best reasons to watch The Long Ballad is the character growth and nuance. From the main to the supporting characters, everyone had an arc where they develop and evolve with the situation. I also like the fact that when you parse it out, there are no good and bad people; everyone had good and bad aspects and it's illustrated well.

It started a little slow but once the pace picked up, it's a great ride.

As one of the older children of the Agriche house, you were cherishing the authority it gave you, yet you never were arrogant about it.

You always secretly helped your younger siblings, especially Roxana, she was your favorite. Ever since the incident with Ashil happened, you took her into a special care.

She, rightfully was distrusting towards you, after all her brother just died and some older half-sibling took an interest in her? No, thank you.

It took quite some time warming her up to you, yet you never stopped, wanting to be her comfort and safe place.

Soon you two started to slowly share things about yourself, and listened actively to the other side, trying to remember every word.

Roxana soon found herself longing for your presence, your every praise being her life line. To get your praise, she started becoming more cruel, raising in the family rank.

Yet when the words of appreciation never left your lips, she lounged herself at you, not letting you go, muttering under her nose incoherent babbling.

Be glad that you haven't heard what she said-

She also started neglecting Jeremy, everything to be in your presence for a little longer. He wanted to hate you, you take his precious sister away from him, yet he couldn't. You were too good to be hated, you also helped him when he was at his worst.

He never forgot it, considering you a decent company to his beloved sister. One that he wouldn't mind, getting the attention of. Yet that burning jealousy..

Slowly Roxana became desperate, if she wouldn't successfully help Cassis run away from her family manor, she would lose you.

Ignoring the fact that she could die, she can't let you die. You're too good to die this way, and that's exactly why, you're also getting dragged into saving Cassis plan.

If she were to go down, you would go down with her

With your support the plan had a higher chance to succeed, which means higher chances of your survival, and hers too, she supposes.

So imagine her bliss when the plan worked. She did it! You both did it!

You're gonna survive!

And will live by her side for a lot longer.

I. ROXANNA AGRICHE

Despite the fact that she loves you, she keeps you at arm's length, similar to Jeremy

Since Ashil died, you were the only fully blood related sibling she had, sharing the same ruby red eyes, so naturally she'd want to keep you close

She would try to keep you safe from the rest of her siblings, often behind the scenes, so you wouldn't know it comes from her

She had a stuffed bear Ashil gave to her when she was young, and she gave it to you a few years ago to keep Ashil with you forever

She does your hair, regardless of your gender. Brushing it gives a sense of calmness to her

II. JEREMY AGRICHE

We've all seen how he acts with Roxana, and it's no different with you, even more so since you're fully related

After your mother killed herself, he stays attached to the hip to you, so you don't leave like she did

Buys you stuff whenever he goes put on missions, since you don't go out as much

You are often the victim of his ranting, either whining about the blue bastard or his older half brother, he tells you almost everything

Will proudly flaunt everything you make him. Whether it's a hoodie or a flower crown, he will brag to everyone in a 50-meter radius

III. DION AGRICHE

Doesn't stay around you too much. He sometimes looks your way if you're in his peripheral vision

He does care about you, quite a lot. You spent a lot of time together as kids, until he had to go outside for missions, then you both sorta drifted apart

His way of loving is not letting you get irritated or hurt by your other siblings, also without your knowledge

He also buys you trinkets on his missions if they remind him of you. You'll randomly go back to your room to find a cute red hair clip with a small jewelled butterfly, knowing full well he's the one that bought it for you

Also sneaks you sweets when you had to watch your weight when you both were younger. At night, he'd sneak into your room with a hand full of sweets, and you'd eat them together. Now he just hands them to you in the halls and leaves abruptly
