My My, I Could Never Let You Go
Summary: Sasha Zoe just wants her dad to walk her down the aisle. There is only one problem: she doesn't know who her dad is! Sasha invites 3 men in hopes of finding out which one is her father. What could possibly go wrong?
Pairings: Levi x Hange, Sasha x Niccolo, and other background relationships
Disclaimer: This is a Levihan Mamma Mia au. This fanfic is inspired by Mamma Mia which is directed by Phyllida Loyd, written by Catherine Johnson, and uses music from the pop group ABBA. Attack on Titan is a manga/anime series written by Hajime Isayama and published by Kondasha
A/N: I’m alive! I would insert a sob story, but I’ll spare you the details. I RECOMMEND looking up Mamma Mia Dancing Queen by Movieclips on Youtube to get a feel of the end (look for the ******). Enjoy!

Ch 5: Dancing Queen
Rico and Nanaba were out drinking again at a nearby bar while Hange was away. Hange mentioned how she had to grab some things from her goat house, so Rico and Nanaba took it upon themselves to drink some more and talk to the locals.
Rico looked up at the bartender in front of her. She recognized him as one of the men who had helped her and Nanaba earlier. This man was way taller than her, and definitely over 6 feet. He had long, light ash-brown hair styled in a mullet, and he had small, intense golden-brown eyes. It almost gave him a vicious look. This time the man was shirtless and only wore swim trunks. It's a good thing wearing swimwear on/underneath clothing was considered normal on the island.
“Here you go, one cocktail for a beautiful woman like you.” he slides the drink over to Rico and gives her a wink. Rico grabbed the drink and gave the man a flirty smile. Definitely not vicious. He seemed like a nice and flirty guy to her.
Maybe husband number 4? Rico smirks as she drinks her cocktail. Don’t get Rico wrong now. She knows what is out of line when it comes to choosing her future husband. However, a little bit of flirting won’t hurt.
“Thank you…” Rico trailed off. Shoot. She never got the guy’s name.
Jean grabs a wet rag and starts cleaning off the bar “Jean. I’m also one of Sasha’s friends.”
“Ah, I heard of you!” Nanaba yells out suddenly. She looks at Jean with excitement. Nanaba loves learning about the bits and pieces of Sasha’s life. After all, it’s been years since she has last seen her. “Sasha has talked a lot about you! You’re Niccolo’s best man, right? Have you been on the island this whole time?”
Jean nodded “Yes and no. Yes, I am Niccolo’s best man. No, I haven’t stayed on the island the whole time. I actually came back a few months ago to prepare for the wedding. I’ve been busy with college studying for art before coming back. I'm currently staying at the old house that I share with my friend, Marco.”
Jean is a Fine Arts major at the Paris College of Art. He agreed to study in France because of his mom. You see, Jean originally lived in France before moving to Kalokairi to be more independent. He was from Strasbourg, which is about 500 km away from Paris. It’s a long drive, but it is worth it for him to see his mom’s smile every time he visits. Jean also works part-time in the bar in Kalokairi to help pay for his expenses. Jean is lucky his old boss let him work again, or else he would be doomed.
Jean reminisced when he first came back to Kalokairi. He was excited to see Sasha again and for the wedding. Jean views Sasha as a sister he wishes he had, and he was genuinely happy to be a part of her wedding.
Jean smiled at the memory. He was strolling through the island, greeting the locals and familiar faces. In fact, Jean was too busy reminiscing to even hear the sound of running footsteps heading towards him from behind. It was then when Jean’s peace was ruined by Hanami jumping on his back. She loudly proclaims her excitement for them working together for Sasha’s wedding (she is Maid of Honor, and he is the Best Man).
Jean sighed as he finished wiping off the bar. That woman is gonna be the death of him one day.
Nanaba looked up to find Rico studying Jean, who was lost in thought. Oh no. Here comes Husband number 4 already.
She rolls her eyes and looks at Rico's drink. It had a peachy color, decorated with an orange wedge on the rim and a mini umbrella. It looked familiar to her, but she couldn’t put a name to it. The orange slice meant it’s definitely fruity. Ironically enough, Nanaba is not a big fan of fruity drinks. She likes a fruity smell in her perfume though. Nanaba prefers drinking beer or hard alcohol like whiskey.
Nanaba grabs Rico's attention. “Hey Rico, what kind of drink did you get?” She proceeds to drink her beer.
“Sex on the beach,” Rico replies nonchalantly. This causes Nanaba to almost choke on her drink. She began to have a coughing fit.
Rico repeatedly slaps Nanaba’s back until she stops coughing. “Did I say something wrong, Nana? Why did you start coughing?” Rico raised an eyebrow.
Jean, noticing Nanaba’s coughing fit, stops making drinks for other customers, to give Nanaba a napkin. She thanks him, and Jean nods and returns back to his job.
Nanaba wipes her mouth and turns to Rico. “Are you trying to imply something by ordering that specific drink with him? You're staring is not exactly subtle, you know." She quickly darts her eyes to Jean, who was busy doing his job and not eavesdropping on their conversation.
Rico laughs and takes a sip of her drink. “Take your mind out of the gutter, Nana.” Rico smirks “I just wanted to order a drink. That’s all. Unless...maybe I am?" She winks at Nanaba and laughs.
Nanaba rolls her eyes and smiles at Rico. She wasn’t surprised that Rico took the opportunity to mess with her. Nanaba looks over to Jean to make sure he is busy. She places a hand on Rico’s shoulder and looks at her with a serious face.
“Don’t mess with the poor boy, Rico. You’re old enough to be his grandmother,” she says with the most serious tone she could come up with. She takes her hand away and takes another sip of her beer. Rico lightly slaps Nanaba’s shoulder in fake offense and laughs again. Of course, Nanaba would point that out. Rico was ready to make a comeback but stopped as she heard running heading in her direction.
Both women turn around from their seats to see an exhausted and frightened Hange run up to them. Hange’s hair was messier than normal, and her glasses were slightly crooked. One of the straps of Hange’s overalls came loose too. She looked as if she ran a marathon or was practicing for the Olympics.
“Where’s Sasha?” Hange asks as if her life depended on it.
Jean, who noticed Hange's appearance, answers for Rico and Nanaba. “I think she’s at the beach with the other girls.” He goes back to his job but doesn't question Hange’s looks. He doesn't want to die before the wedding.
“What’s up?” Nanaba asks tenderly and reaches up to fix Hange’s glasses. Now that Hange was up close, she noticed how red her eyes were and the tears that were ready to spill.
Hange was overwhelmed with emotions. She has to juggle running the hotel, Sasha’s wedding, and now deal with her past lovers! This was not how she wanted Sasha’s wedding to go. She couldn’t bear the idea of having both sides meet. What would the men think? Heck, what would Sasha think? Hange has been vague about Sasha’s father for years now. Would Sasha hate her for keeping them a secret? She doesn’t even know who Sasha’s actual father is!
Hange felt her dam begin to burst and some snot running down her nose. Hange ignored Nanaba’s question and ran off to the nearest bathroom. She ignores Nanaba and Rico calling out to her. Hange ran into the nearest open stall, closed the door and the toilet seat, and sat down to cry. She didn’t want the whole island to see her at the moment, so crying in the bathroom was the best thing to do. Hange grabs a part of her overalls to blow her nose.
Meanwhile, Nanaba and Rico (who brought her purse and her drink) followed Hange to the bathroom and called out her name. Sadly, there was no reply. She only heard the soft cries coming from the nearest stall. Nanaba runs to the front of the door. Rico closes the bathroom door and sets her stuff down before joining her.
Nanaba knocks on the door and turns to Rico with a worried look on her face. There was no response again except for Hange blowing her nose.
“Talk to her,” Rico whispers to Nanaba. Nanaba nods her head and turns back to the door. She leans towards it and takes a deep breath.
“Hans.'' She starts with Hange’s nickname from college. Nanaba spoke to Hange with a tender and caring tone. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
Nanaba places her ear against the door and waits to hear anything from Hange. She only hears soft whimpers instead. This caused Nanaba to frown. She turns to Rico and moves her hand in a hurry-up motion. She already put some effort into this. Now it's Rico’s turn.
“Oh, right! Uhh…” Rico was unsure about what to do. She hasn’t seen Hange cry like that in years. The last time Rico heard Hange cry like that was after Levi left, and it was over the phone too! She glances at Nanaba who kept encouraging her to go.
Rico was unsure about what to say. She’s not the best at comforting people, but she will at least try. For Hange. “I’ve never seen you with so much sorrow, Hans."
Nanaba turns to Rico in realization and grabs her shoulders "and the wedding is tomorrow!"
"We have to see Hange!" She whispers to Rico.
Rico nods in agreement and takes Nanaba’s hands off of her. "Good plan. You go on all fours on the floor, and I'll stand on your back. You look from the bottom, and I'll look from the top."
Nanaba looked at Rico with disbelief "Are you crazy? It's logical for me to be on the top. I'm the tallest!"
Rico pinched the bridge of her nose, causing her glasses to move up slightly. She sighed while Hange’s crying continued in the background.
"Now is not the time to be comparing heights, Nanaba. Hange is not emotionally stable right now, and she needs us to help. Besides, it's logical for you to be on the bottom. You're heavier than me."
Nanaba wanted to punch Rico for playing the weight card, but she did have a point. She also knows about Rico’s cleaning standards (which aren’t as high as Levi’s, but only Hange knows that), so she won’t go down on the floor unless she has to.
Nanaba sighed. Now was the time for arguing. They needed to focus on Hange and can deal with Rico later.
"Fine." Nanaba moved to go on all fours on the floor. She tilted her head towards her back "Hop on."
Meanwhile, Hange continued to cry into her palms. She was too depressed to even hear what was going on the other side of the door. The memories with all three men kept replaying in her mind nonstop. Hange can recall cuddling on the beach with Erwin. She can picture dancing with Mike underneath the night sky on his yacht. She also remembers the time when Levi kissed her forehead when she pretended she was sleeping one day. Hange continued to cry but stops when she hears a thump on the door.
Hange looks up to find Rico staring down at her and holding on to the door. Now Hange was confused. Rico is too short to look over from the top. Unless…
She let her eyes fall downward to find Nanaba looking at her from the bottom. Both she and Rico had a concerned look on their faces.
"I hate to see you like-” Rico gestures to Hange “-this."
Hange looks up at Rico as she continues on. Hange felt ridiculous. Here she was crying over 3 men on the toilet. She knew she looked like a mess. She needs to get up from the toilet first in case her friends suddenly burst into song.
Nanaba adds onto Rico’s statement, "Hans, you can't deny that you're sad. It's just...We haven't seen you this sad since- ahh!" She and Rico scream as Hange suddenly opens the door.
Hange runs out to the bathroom door and to the nearest sink. Nanaba and Rico quickly stood up and went to either one of Hange’s sides. Rico and Nanaba patted Hange's back to comfort her. They didn't want to force Hange to talk. She can talk when she is ready.
Hange looks at herself in the mirror. She looks and feels like shit. Ironically, it made her think about Levi. What was that nickname Levi would call her besides Four Eyes? Shitty Glasses. Hange looked at herself in the mirror. Now her whole face played the part too. It almost made Hange laugh. Her eyes were red and puffy, and she could see some snot dripping down her nose. Hange wipes it off with a tissue Rico put out in front of her. Hange’s clothes looked disheveled too. She couldn't recognize herself in the mirror.
Nanaba leaned her head on Hange’s shoulder. Hange smiled and put her right hand on Nanaba’s cheek as thanks. Rico leaned on Hange’s other shoulder, and Hange placed her head on top of Rico's.
"You're our best friend, Hange," Nanaba says softly. She uses Hange’s actual name instead of her nickname. That's how Hange knew Nanaba was being serious.
"You can rely on us" Rico replies next with a soft tone as well.
Hange begins to cry again. What did she do to deserve friends like them? They saw Hange rise and fall in life, yet they stayed by her side no matter what.
Nanaba and Rico, who noticed Hange’s waterworks appearing again, turns Hange away from the mirror. They push her up to sit on the sink. Nanaba and Rico sat down on the sink next to Hange after she was situated.
Rico speaks up first after a moment of silence "You’re usually so sure of yourself Hange. Now, look at you. You look so broken." She looks at Hange with concern. "Just know that it's ok to cry. You’ll be up and dancing again once your pain ends" She rubs Hange’s arm and Hange smiles at the gesture.
Nanaba leans towards Hange to fix her overalls, and Hange turns to look at her. "I hope we can patch up whatever is going on, Hange. We just want to see you happy again." Hange smiles at Nanaba’s words.
"That's it!" Rico suddenly says "you just need a little pick me up. That would help cheer you up!" Rico turns to Nanaba. "Help me out her Nanaba."
Both women jump down from the sink. Rico goes to her purse, which was nearby. Nanaba takes off Hange’s glasses and stands ready for whatever Rico has in store.
First, Rico hands Nanaba some tissues to wipe Hange’s tears and snot. Nanaba wipes Hange’s nose until Rico starts throwing one too many tissues at Hange.
Second, Rico grabs a breath spray freshener. Nanaba opens her mouth for Hange to mimic as she takes off the cap. Nanaba sprays it one time, but Hange starts coughing from the spray entering her throat.
Third, Rico grabs some perfume and hands it to Nanaba. Hange was expecting a few sprits of perfume not bathing in the whole bottle! Hange sneezes because of the perfume. Maybe she would smell good enough to be up to Levi’s standards? Hange rolls her eyes at the thought.
Finally, Rico grabs her cocktail for Hange to drink. Nanaba works to redo Hange’s ponytail. Hange reaches over to grab the drink, but Rico moves it out of her reach. Rico places the drink on Hange’s lips and tilts the glass up to a point Hange might as well chug the whole thing. Hange moves her hands up and takes the drink away from her mouth.
"OK! I appreciate the help, you guys!" Hange cries out. She sniffs and wipes her nose with her arm. She might as well confess and get straight to the point
"It's her dad," Hange confesses.
Nanaba and Rico were confused. "Who's dad?" Rico asks.
Hange looks at Rico with a serious face. "Sasha’s dad" she clarifies
Hange stares at her friend’s faces but was met with silence. She decided to continue with her story.
"Remember how I told you it's Levi, the supposed mystery guy who is actually a millionaire? The man who left to get married."
Nanaba and Rico nodded to show they are following Hange’s story.
"Well, there were two other guys. Around the same time. You already met one of them before."
Hange looks up at Nanaba. Although Nanaba was looking at the floor, Hange could see the gears turning in her head and the puzzle pieces fitting together. Nanaba realized who she was talking about and how he and Hange did more than just ‘go on nightly boat rides.’
"The man who accidentally ran into you that day...the boat rides...” She looks up to meet Hange’s eyes. “One of them is Mike. Isn't it?"
Hange nods and looks away in shame. She didn't want to see Nanaba’s reaction. Hange suspected Nanaba had a crush on the guy, but she noticed it too late. Hange’s mind was clouded by her summer romance to even notice Nanaba’s longing stares at Mike. Hange still feels guilty and selfish about it to this day.
Rico placed her hand on Hange’s cheek so she can face her. "Why didn't you tell us?"
“Well, I never knew I would ever have to really! I don't even know who Sasha’s actual father is!” Hange confesses.
Nanaba placed her hand on Hange’s shoulders for support. Hange didn't see any hatred in Nanaba’s eyes after confessing about sleeping with Mike. Bless Nanaba’s heart. “Well, we already know Levi and Mike. Who’s the third guy?”
Hange takes a sip of her drink before responding, “A man named Erwin Smith. I don’t think any of you know him. He left Kalokairi before you guys arrived.”
Nanaba takes her hand off of Hange’s shoulder and shakes her head “The name does not ring any bells.”
Hange looks at Rico expecting the same reaction as Nanaba. What she did not expect was Rico’s mouth wide open in shock.
“Erwin Smith. Tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, and a face that looks like he starred in a movie? That Erwin Smith?” Rico asks as if she was in a trance
Hange looked at Rico with surprise. “Yes?”
Suddenly, Rico broke out of her trance and jumped with excitement. Hange and Nanaba looked at her confused.
“I’ll take that you know Erwin Smith?” Nanaba asks after Rico calmed down a bit
“Of course! Who doesn’t know who he is?” Rico said
“Apparently me,” Nanaba mumbles to herself, but Rico hears her anyway.
Rico sighs after calming down a bit. She takes out her phone and googles Erwin’s name. She pulls up the first image of him and shoves her phone to her friend’s face.
“Of course you wouldn’t, Nanaba. Erwin was on the cover of People’s: Sexiest Men Alive a few years ago and was in the Top 10 of the Most Handsome Faces in TC Chandler!”
Rico looks at Hange and Nanaba’s faces. She was expecting an exciting reaction but was met with her best friends just staring at her.
Rico continues instead “His dad was a successful university professor and is known for his contributions in research and activism. Erwin is similar to him, except he is a lawyer. Overall, Erwin is a very influential person in New York, and he has a good looking face”
Rico turns off her phone and pockets it away, and turns to Hange. “Hange, you’re a lucky gal to have slept with him. I gotta say that I’m impressed. You gotta introduce me to him sometime.”
Nanaba rolled her eyes. Hange couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “I knew he was a lawyer, but not all of that!” she waves her hands around to emphasize it. She ignored Rico’s suggestion for now.
Rico gave Hange a sympathized smile “Well, you’ve been so focused and dedicated to your hotel and Sasha. I’m not surprised you don’t pay much attention to everything outside of Kalokairi or even Greece.”
Meanwhile, in Nanaba’s head, she was trying to fit all of the puzzle pieces together. She didn’t see any of the men when she and Rico first arrived on the island, nor did she see them while heading to the hotel.
So that means they arrived after us, Nanaba thought. The question is, where are they now?
“Hange” Nanaba interrupts Rico and Hange’s conversation. Rico had asked Hange who she thought was the best out of the three she slept with. Nanaba could tell who she picked based on Hange’s small yet goofy and Rico’s 'are you serious?' face. “Where are the men now?” she asks carefully.
Hange’s face became horrified. She last saw them in the old goat house, but what if Sasha came back from the beach? How would she react?
“The old goat house,” Hange says. She looks at both of her friend’s faces “We can’t let them meet Sasha!”
Nanaba and Rico quickly grab their things as Hange puts the drink down and jumps off the sink. The three ran off towards the goat house, but not too fast to avoid any suspicion from any onlookers.
Meanwhile, Sasha and her friends peeked up from their hiding spots to find Rico and Nanaba entering the barn. They went back into hiding as soon as Hange entered.
“Don’t let them hear you!” Hange whispers as Rico and Nanaba climb up the steps to the attic.
Nanaba opened the hatch and looks inside first. Rico and Hange followed after only to find nothing.
“There’s no one here,” Nanaba says in shock.
Rico turns to Hange. “Are you sure?” she asks questioningly.
Hange rolls her eyes. “Of course, I'm sure! Do you think I would forget my daughter’s dads?”
She sighs. “They were all here. Levi Ackerman, Erwin Smith, and Mike Zacharias.”
Sasha takes a quick peek from her hiding spot with Mikasa to find her mom walking down the steps from the attic. Nanaba and Rico followed behind her.
“They must have gone on Mike’s boat,” Hange says as she walks out of the barn. “I hope they hit aground and drown.”
Hange enters the hotel and goes up the stairs to go to her bedroom. “What are they even doing here? It’s like fate just hates me today,” she says and throws her hands up in the air.
“Do they know about Sasha?” Nanaba asks as she runs up the steps.
“What are they, psychic?. Of course not! I never told a soul.” Hange turns to face Nanaba before heading into her room.
“Not even Pieck?” Nanaba asks and puts her purse down.
“I never told her too,” Hange says as she paces around near her bed.
“Oh Hange, you kept this to yourself all these years,” Rico says sympathetically and puts her stuff down.
Hange stops pacing and heads to her balcony door. “It doesn’t matter to me.” She closes the door. “The only thing that matters is that Sasha does not find out.”
Rico puts her hands on her hips and watches Hange walk around the room. “Maybe she might be cool with it?” she suggests.
Hange walks up to her bedroom door and closes it. “Cool with it,” she repeats. When would Sasha ever be cool with something like that? She might react the same way Hange reacted to Eren and Connie accidentally breaking her vase from Ms. Alexandra. It was not a pretty sight.
Hange chuckles nervously and walks over to her friends. “You don’t know Sasha as I do. This would be like a bombshell.
“But Hange, they’re gone!” Nanaba argues
“I don’t know that! They could be anywhere for all I know!” Hange runs her hands through her ponytail and moves to sit in front of her vanity.
She looks at herself in the mirror “I did this all to myself because I was stupid and reckless little slut.” she says and glares at her reflection.
Rico and Nanaba both gasped. “A slut?” Rico questioned. “You sound like your mother, right Nanaba?” Nanaba nods and laughs
Hange quickly turns around “I do not!” she says offensively.
“Yes, you do,” Nanaba says as Rico laughs this time.
Rico walks over to Hange’s stuff and grabs a feather boa and a ridiculous-looking hat. She then turns to Nanaba and gives her a familiar look that only Nanaba could understand. Nanaba caught on to Rico’s message and took her phone out of her pocket.
“Whatever happened to our Hange? The life and soul of the party.” Rico says dramatically. She puts the hat on top of Hange’s head and the boa around her neck.
“Yeah, the one who would talk your ears off about her research but can convince you to do a random musical number in the middle of campus? I’m astonished by how many men agreed to join." Nanaba adds as she was scrolling through her phone.
"Exactly, Nanaba! I remember how our Hange would attract so many guys with that back in New College." Rico laughs at the memories of different men walking up to Hange as she studied. Hange was too engrossed in her research to give most of them the time of day!
******
Hange could tell what Rico was trying to do. "Well, I grew up." She says as she recalls how much she has changed since.
Nanaba nudges Rico and steps away from her to give them some space. Rico smiles. "Well, you need to grow back down again Hange."
Rico jumps in her spot to face Nanaba and points to her. "Hit it, Nanaba!"
Nanaba presses play on her music app and pocket her phone away to where Hange could still hear the music. The familiar tune of “Dancing Queen” fills the room.
Hange watches her friends as they move their arms in a goofy manner, shook their hips, and sang their hearts out to the song. At one point, Nanaba and Rico faced one another and they sang to each other before directing their attention to Hange so she could sing along.
Hange squealed when her friends poked her sides. She ran to her bed and laid face down to avoid them. She moved her head up slightly to peek at her friends from her spot behind her blanket. Instead, she found her room empty, but the music continued to play.
Hange watched Rico and Nanaba rise up from the floor, go back down, and repeat the process a few times as they sang. The two eventually moved around Hange’s room and used multiple objects as props for their performance. In Hange’s opinion, Nanaba and Rico’s singing and dancing looked pretty ridiculous, but she knew they meant well. "Dancing Queen" is one of Hange’s favorite songs, and people at New College witness Hange dancing at parties. She was known as the Dancing Queen back in her college days. She wasn’t the best dancer, but anyone could tell she was having fun with one glance.
Hange started tapping her foot to the beat as she continued laying on the bed. She started reminiscing about her college days when she would go out and have fun, all while learning about biology. She remembered how she and her friends would let loose and just live life to the fullest. Hange wanted to explore and discover new parts of the world. It was one reason why she left for Kalokairi on her own all those years ago.
Hange sat up and pulled the blanket towards her. She watched as her friends go through her drawers to grab random articles of clothing to put on. Rico put on a puffy dress over her clothes, and Nanaba grabbed a random shirt and tied it around her head. Hange felt her mood change, and now she wanted to join in on the fun.
She sets the blanket aside and jumps during the song’s refrain. Hange felt as if she was the star of the show, her bed was the stage, and her friends were her audience. Hange felt alive! She felt like she was 22 again performing onstage with her friends. Hange even did a split in the air! Hange continued dancing on her bed before she had an idea. She grabbed her forgotten boa and ran out of her room.
“Where are you going?” Rico calls out while laughing.
Hange was running down the steps of the hotel, stops, and turns around to Rico. “I feel like singing today. Might as well do a musical number just like old times.” She winks and laughs as she continues running down the stairs.
Rico and Nanaba look at each other with glee before following Hange. They got their Hange back!
Hange, Nanaba, and Rico jumped around in sync as they passed the courtyard. The locals who watched nearby laughed. It looks like the trio was back at it again.
You see, before Hange had met Mike, Hange and her friends did a few performances in Kalokairi to help Hange deal with her heartbreak. Occasionally, Hange would invite the locals to perform with her, and the island would break out into a big musical (which never happened until Hange and her friends came along). The island was quiet after Hange had met Mike and her best friends left. Ever since Sasha’s birth, the locals would often find Hange singing those old songs to herself as she strolled around with her daughter. It was a sign to them that the Hange they met was still there, just dormant for now.
Hange stopped dancing once she reached a group of locals sitting around a table playing a board game. She places her boa behind one of the elderly men and lets the boa slide across his shoulders, much to his shock. The Hange he usually saw was too busy with her hotel to start dancing around for fun. Hange then places the boa across her back and on her elbows as she sang.
Meanwhile, Nanaba and Rico were out recruiting some locals to join them. It’s a good thing they were familiar with Hange and her group, or else the whole interaction would have been really awkward.
The group marched across the hotel grounds as the music continued to play good Nanaba’s phone. Hange skipped past the entrance with everyone following her. Nanaba and Rico would occasionally leave to gather more people to join as she led the group through town. Other locals were drawn to Hange’s group after seeing her singing and dancing again. Everyone singing along helped amplify the song, and everyone was in sync.
Hange was having so much fun and was having the time of her life. She skipped and sang as leads the group through different parts of the island. It felt like old times when she used to perform with her friends. Now here she was singing "Dancing Queen" with practically the whole island!
Hange started heading towards one of the piers. At this point, the group had doubled in size. A local piano player and an electric guitar player accompanied the song from their boats. The group stopped moving on the pier and continued dancing and singing to the beat. Everyone followed Hange, Nanaba, and Rico’s lead.
As the final parts of the song started to end, everyone who joined started to face Hange. They wanted her to end the song with a bang. Hange took her hair tie out of her hair and let her hair loose. She whipped her hair back and forth a bit and laughed cheerfully.
Hange came up with a good idea to end her little musical number. She looked to her left as everyone sang the final note to see Rico, who was the closest to her. Hange suddenly ran up to Rico and pushed her into the water. She then turned to Nanaba with mischievous eyes.
"Oh no, you don't!" Nanaba laughs as she attempts to run away from Hange. Nanaba didn't get far before Hange pushed her into the water too. Hange jumped in after her. Thank goodness for the invention of water-resistant cell phones. Everyone else jumped into the water after Hange.
Hange felt much better now than an hour ago. As she trod on the water, she couldn't help but think of her memories with the three men. She has happy memories with Erwin and Mike. She wishes she could say the same for Levi though. Hange felt pain thinking about him although she spent the most time with him. He was the one who broke her heart the most. Yet, swimming in the water reminded her of one time when she took off Levi’s clothes and pushed him off a pier and into the water. Hange's plan backfired when Levi grabbed her wrist to drag her with him. The goofy smile returned for just a slight moment, but it was long enough for Nanaba and Rico to catch.
Nanaba and Rico glanced at each other while treading on the water. Their plan worked for the most part. However, Hange Zoe still had some lingering feelings for Levi Ackerman.

Author’s Note:
The “Dancing Queen” scene was the hardest to write for me. I hope you like it and understand what is going on.
I apologize if any character is OOC and I know I portray Greece inaccurately.
I changed the character’s ages based on the school year in Greece (Sept 11 - June 15). Everyone is 20-21 and Armin is the oldest. Sasha’s bday changed to May.
I appreciate ANY feedback (especially after this chapter). I hope you have a good day, and everyone affected by today’s earthquake is safe.

THE CHRONICLES OF AMBER & History Lessons
It should be obvious that writers, composers, painters and all artists respond to the time in which they live, and that this is reflected in their art. And it should also come as no surprise that some material is more strongly influenced by the historical moment than other art. All this is at least as true for Roger Zelazny and his idolized Chronicles of Amber — perhaps somewhat more so, given that these five books in no small way chart a complete decade.
NINE PRINCES IN AMBER (1970)
History: Pieces of the first book saw print as early as 1967. It appears Zelazny worked on the book here and there for three years or more until its publication in 1970. Still looming over the political landscape of the time was the assassination of John F. Kennedy years earlier, which had led to the Johnson “great society” era and from there to Nixon’s struggles with China, the Soviet Union and the Vietnam War. Just as influential was the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as that of Robert Kennedy. The 1960s were dominated by these issues, the Cold War and threat of nuclear annihilation, the rise of the counter-culture and protest movements, the Beatles and Woodstock, and the first landing of men on the Moon.
As someone familiar with Jungian psychology and Frazer’s Golden Bough, Zelazny saw a way to harness the interregnum turmoil of the Sixties while incorporating the ritual of “the Killing of the King.” (Conspiriologists left and right — politically, and otherwise — have long adhered to the notion that it was not a coincidence that this particular killing of the king had been carried out in accordance with ancient ritual.) The King of Amber is missing or deceased. Factions have quickly aligned to jockey for the best position to take advantage of the power vacuum. That a conspiracy to remove both the king and Corwin is uncovered, a few books later, also mirrors the deaths of the Kennedys. Our hero, already in a state of confusion over his own identity and situation, is thrust into the midst of this power-struggle and — like Armstrong and Aldrin aboard the Eagle — soon finds himself visiting another world.
Lesson: Corwin charges in somewhat blindly, and is literally blinded (and imprisoned) as a result. When he miraculously regains both his sight and his freedom, he vows that patience and planning will guide him going forward and that, this time, he will prevail and take his rightful place in Amber. He also learns that what drives you, what you want, has a lot to say about who you are.
Journey: He starts out being held against his will in a hospital, recovering from broken legs and near-drowning from a car accident. By the end of the book, he is recuperating from years of blindness and imprisonment under much better circumstances in a remote lighthouse while cared for by an old friend. When he leaves the lighthouse, no one tries to thwart his departure (he is voluntarily assisted, in point of fact), he knows exactly who he is and what he wants, and has a clear idea of his objective and how to achieve it.
THE GUNS OF AVALON (1972)
History: Two years pass, eventful ones. No shortage of natural disasters — major cholera epidemics in Istanbul and Slovakia; avalanches in France and Peru; earthquakes in Tonghai, Gediz, Burdur, Bingl, Peru and elsewhere destroy cities and kill thousands; Mount Etna erupts; Montreal is buried by the blizzard dubbed La Tempête du Siècle; the Odisha cyclone overtakes the Bay of Bengal and claims 10,000 lives; 50 tornadoes tear through Louisiana and Mississippi; floods put Bangladesh and eastern Bengal underwater; the Bhola cyclone wipes out half a million people. But the real disasters turn out to be man-made, so much so that this period could easily be described by the phrase “state of emergency.” The Apollo 13 mission fails, though the astronauts survive and the summer of 1971 sees a rover rolling across the surface of the Moon. Oil-price instability and Nixon taking the dollar off the gold standard together signal economic and energy crises yet-to-come, but the real instability is social, political and military. Coups and assassinations become commonplace as former colonial possessions are granted independence.
Keyword: Napalm. Bombs, terrorism, murder and violence, state-sanctioned and otherwise, plague the United Kingdom due to resistance to British rule in Northern Ireland. American incursions into Laos and Cambodia fuel growing anti-war sentiment. The publication of the Pentagon Papers and the COINTELPRO documents stolen from FBI offices in Pennsylvania, news images of the Kent State shootings, and revelations of the My Lai Massacre throw gasoline onto the fire: 150,000 protest the Vietnam War in San Francisco on the same day that half a million march on Washington, D.C. 60% of Americans oppose American troops in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, the ashes of Hitler, Eva Braun, and the Goebbels family are scattered in East Germany’s Biederitz River. Echoing all this, Zelazny pulls from the Grail quest an idea which unites the chaos reflected in the natural and human worlds in a single image — the Wasteland — and gives it the form of the Black Road, which Corwin discovers runs all the way to the outskirts of his beloved Amber.
Lesson: Corwin struggles with his commitment to his system of values as demonic beings and foreign-imposed dictatorship threaten the shadow world Lorraine and Amber herself. With some reluctance, he risks his own neck for a place lost to him long ago, and abandons his scheme to turn his troops and guns against Amber when the kingdom seems on the brink of falling to an enemy coming in strength. He understands the necessity to adapt to changing conditions and to remain flexible while pursuing his goals.
Journey: Corwin intends to sail straight to Avalon but gets lost in his very own Wood of Error, so that a spontaneous choice leads him instead into the hell of Lorraine, its Goat, and the citadel at the heart of the Black Circle. Toward the end of the book he is again diverted from his course in that his original mission, to exact vengeance on his brother Eric and seize the throne, is set aside when he comes upon the creatures of the Black Road at Amber’s gates. Just as he set out seeking gunpowder in Avalon but found something else along the way — the knight errant he once was long ago — he marches to Amber to find that the regicide he believed he desired was not what he would ultimately want or choose to do.
Vietnam and the 1970s
The tide had definitely turned against U.S. participation in the Vietnam War by the first years of the decade. Nixon, having seen Johnson’s presidency founder and meet an early end due to the war, initiated a draw-down of forces. Australia and New Zealand pulled out of the war in 1971. By the end of that same year, American ground forces had been withdrawn from the war effort, though involvement would drag on a few more years.
Britain, though victorious after World War I, had been left depleted and weary of war — brutal trench warfare had cost the nation more than a million lives. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution of 1964 more or less marked the beginning of the Vietnam War in the minds of Americans, when U.S. troop strength went from 23,000 to 184,000. It had therefore gone on longer than World War I and wound up costing approximately 60,000 American lives. In America a fatigue had taken hold which was not so different from what post-Great War Britain had known.
Zelazny may have been responding to the mood of the times when portraying the enormity and senselessness of the losses witnessed, and caused, by Corwin and other princes of Amber.
From the first book:
“…ten thousand men dead in a plains battle with centaurs, five thousand lost in an earthquake of frightening proportions, fifteen hundred dead of a whirlwind plague that swept the camps, nineteen thousand dead or missing in action as they passed through the jungles of a place I didn’t recognize, when the napalm fell upon them from the strange buzzing things that passed overhead, six thousand deserting in a place that looked like the heaven they had been promised, five hundred unaccounted for as they crossed a sand flat where a mushroom cloud burned and towered beside them, eighty-six hundred gone as they moved through a valley of suddenly militant machines that rolled forward on treads and fired fires, eight hundred sick and abandoned, two hundred dead from flash floods, fifty-four dying of duels among themselves, three hundred dead from eating poisonous native fruits, a thousand slain in a massive stampede of buffalo-like creatures, seventy-three gone when their tents caught fire, fifteen hundred carried away by the floods, two thousand slain by the winds that came down from the blue hills.”
What tends to jump out from that passage (especially to readers harkening back to the ’70s):
(1) napalm dropped from aircraft on troops moving through jungles below results in a number of casualties far higher than deaths from any other cause;
(2) immediately after thousands depart for paradise, their desertion is contrasted with the hell of the detonation of a nuclear weapon;
(3) aside from deaths due to centaurs, war machines, nuclear warfare and napalm, natural disasters are responsible for the mass losses of life, yet the total taken by disaster is still dwarfed by the number slain in combat.
There is not much other commentary on war in the series. The subject of warfare is largely confined to the first two books. But there is this from the end of the sixth chapter of Nine Princes in Amber:
“As I stood on a hilltop and the evening began around me, it seemed as if I looked out over every camp I had ever stood within, stretching on and on over the miles and the centuries without end. I suddenly felt tears come into my eyes, for the men who are not like the lords of Amber, living but a brief span and passing into dust, that so many of them must meet their ends upon the battlefields of the world.”
[…to be continued in a future post…]

The Academy Of Sun: Psychaedelic Pop from Brighton
Formed in Brighton nine years ago, The Academy of Sun is a four-piece comprised of Nick Hudson (piano, synths, hammon organ, harmonium, vocals, percussion, synths), Kianna Blue (bass, synths), Guy Brice (guitars) and Ash Babb (drums). Together, they present dystopian fantastic creations that combine the deeply personal and the poetically arcane. Dark yet buoyant, this is a controlled explosion of psychedelic and dark power pop with atmospheres couched in vast and expansive landscapes and cinematic arrangements.
Nick Hudson's musical juggernaut has been active in various incarnations since 2012, always transcending expectations. The Academy Of Sun has collaborated with Massive Attack's Shara Nelson, members of NYC's Kayo Dot, David Tibet of Current 93, Asva and Matthew Seligman (Bowie, Tori Amos, Morrissey). Hudson has also collaborated with Wayne Hussey of The Mission, as well as Canadian queercore icon GB Jones. Known for explosive and psychedelic live shows, The Academy Of Sun has performed in a medieval castle in Italy, a boat on the Thames, an abandoned railway carriage in Offenbach, colossal churches, The London College of Fashion, The Old Market theatre in Brighton, the MS Stubnitz in Hamburg, Brighton Dome, and a string of L.A. shows in 2019. Having toured 3 continents, highlights include appearances with Mogwai, Toby Driver and Keith Abrams from Kayo Dot, and Timba Harris (Mr Bungle, Amanda Palmer). 'The Parts That Need Replacing' is out now, available across online stores and streaming platforms such as Spotify. The full album 'The Quiet Earth' will be released in summer of 2020 on CD, as well as digitally.
THE INTERVIEW
Who are the group members?
Myself, Kianna Blue, Ash Babb, Guy Brice.
How did you meet?
A poet introduced Kianna and I. We ended up living together, In our modest cottage on the edge of a cliff we kept house goats. Guy was one of them. It became quickly apparent that if he kept his hooves pedicured, he had an incredible way with a guitar. Ash and I met in a local tavern, courtesy of a mutual online awareness via the blog of author Dennis Cooper.
How did you come up with your name?
I'd been reading literature on pagan sun-worshipping cults and came across Heliogabalus, the queer teenage anarchist emperor of ancient Rome. Artaud wrote on him. So I wanted to unleash and harness the unkempt nuclear blaze of that energy within a formalist framework.
What is your music about?
It's about invigoration and alchemy – stimulating the mind and soul in tandem with the body. Music to dance and cry to. It's about pole-vaulting transgressive and subversive narratives over the iron gate of mainstream normativity. Spiraling wells of energy and dynamism. Loud and shimmering vibrancy. “Did I really hear that?”
What are your goals as an artist artistically/commercially?
Artistically I just want to continually evolve my craft, critical faculties, and general state of awareness so as I can get ever closer to precisely articulating the atmospheres, geometries and ghost stories that circle my head like ever-mutating angels, day and night, on the brink of expelling light and form. And in doing so, to gather those who are similarly drawn to peering through the cracks. Commercially, I - and we - really just want to connect this with a bigger audience. We're aware that we're a weird band, and that it's a long game. So it demands stoicism, patience and persistence. The ideal would be to get to a level where we have sufficient economic backing to be able to actually deploy all the ideas we have without compromising on logistics or production values.
What are you trying to avoid as a band?
The music industry.
Why do you make the music you make? Is it in you? Is it your environment?
It's more interior than exterior. Albeit I respond very palpably to landscapes, just not the one that I'm writing this interview from within! Haha. I'm drawn to severe, wild landscapes, and likewise to art and music that evokes such landscapes.
What inspires you for the music or for the Lyrics?
I've always written prose and poetry, and so a key factor in my embarking upon songwriting fifteen years ago was preserving the conditions of unabashed literary aspirations in my lyrics. I like to think/strive to ensure that as much as they might stand successfully alone on the page they also transmit the melodies with ease. I'm drawn to art in any medium that explores and expresses extreme states of being – modes of transcendence, ultimately. Ecstasies, agonies, the uncanny, the transgressive, the sublime. Stillness can also be extreme. Lots of nature imagery. European cinema and literature.
Tell us what you are looking when trying to achieve your sounds. Do you experiment a lot or have a clear idea of what you want?
I think we all share a delight in unusual sonics – there were some genuinely experimental moments in the studio – for example, the first sound heard on the record is a drone created by my playing a pre-recorded vocal through the speaker of a cassette recorder into the pick-ups on Guy's guitar, which was then sent through waves of delay. We created a MIDI church organ by recording the bass pedals of the church organ of St Mary's, Brighton and turning that into a MIDI instrument. The idea of pitch-bending such a monolithic and defiantly analogue instrument was irresistible. There's one track where we recorded the drum part four times and placed each take peculiarly across the stereo field. And there are field recordings scattered throughout, evoking radioactivity and harsh landscapes. I usually, with each track, have a pretty clear idea of the aesthetic and formal parameters within which experimentation can occur, and we go from there.
Explain your songwriting process.
Sometimes I'll be improvising on piano and motifs will surface that later impose their will upon my subconscious, continually knocking until I open the door and allow them to become a song. Other times I'll have the completed lyrics and sit and just experiment with ways to place them, and edit, and edit until they're homed. Some songs arrive in one swift nuclear wind, and others take years to ferment. I keep a lot of audio notes on my iphone.
Describe your palette of sound.
Rich but not cloying, Psychedelic but not nostalgic. Adventurous. Green and gold. Complex but not arbitrarily technical. Deconstructing, rerouting and inverting obvious formal choices but not at the expense of comprehension.
Who would you want as a dream producer, and why?
Trent Reznor, Bjork, Tim Palmer, David Lynch, Danny Elfman. I thought I'd compensate for not saying 'why' by instead listing five, haha.
If you could guest on someone else’s album, who would it be and why? What would you play?
Well I know he's technically on the cusp of retiring, but assuming this questions dwells in an amorphous temporality (as we do ourselves under quarantine), I'd say Ennio Morricone. Because he's peerless. I would love to have played piano/organ on one of his sixties/seventies film works. To say I've been produced by Morricone and appear on, say, the Sacco and Vanzetti soundtrack, would see me fairly ecstatic.
What musical skills would you like to acquire or get better at?
I'd like develop further fluency in classical notation and orchestration.
Which other musician/artist would you date?
I don't really subscribe to coupledom or its rituals but maybe Jack from These New Puritans. NB. I would never, EVER date a musician. Haha.
Is there a band that if they didn’t exist you wouldn’t be making the music you make?
Probably Mr Bungle. In that they not only blew my mind at a young age with their own music, but laid breadcrumbs for me to explore the family tree of John Zorn, Tzadik, and the sprawling concentric circles of artists making up the experimental underground of LA and NYC.
You are from England. What are the advantages and inconvenient?
Hold my hair back. Well. Its primary advantage is its proximity to the European mainland.
Its disadvantages are manifold and voluminous – aside from a micro-percentage of wonderful, compassionate, intelligent and progressive entities and institutions, its a nasty little hotbed of misplaced Churchillian hubris and post-imperial egocentrism, ruled as a playpen by which neo-liberal public schoolboy millionaires can move their assets around and grow their wealth while 'ironically' masquerading a paper-thin veneer of concern for the public interest and welfare.
Boris Johnson and his monstrous cabal aside, the UK treats its musicians appallingly. I've toured Europe, America and The Middle East and it shames me to say that the worst treatment I've experienced out of any of the countries I've played is that of the UK. I'm not alone in this assertion either.
There are exceptions of course, but as a rule, this sadly remains the case. Ten years of Tory rule certainly hasn't helped this.
What are some places around the world that you hope to play with your band?
There's that amphitheater built into a rock face somewhere in Central Europe. I'd like to do a tour of churches and cathedrals. And acoustically-dynamic natural rock formations.
It's my dream to take The Academy Of Sun on an extensive tour of Europe, but we'd need solid economic backing to be able to do so with production values intact, let alone keep us all afloat while doing so.
So that's something to push for. There's a pueblo in New Mexico called TAOS – obviously it's pre-destined that we play there. I went to Svalbard in the Arctic last year, and there's a beautiful concert hall called Huset right between two glaciers. I'd love us to play there. (Johannes, are you reading this?)
When is the next album/EP due?
June! We inevitably had to postpone the release from its intended release in April, when the whole world went on pause. We're super-excited to have you all hear The Quiet Earth.
Some artists you recommend
I can't get enough of Oingo Boingo right now – Danny Elfman's band that split in 1995. Peerless songwriting, arrangement, production and performance. Otherwise, Arca is amazing. I'm listening to a lot of Nico. Devouring Clive Barker's early novels. Revisiting Diamanda Galas' earlier catalogue. Watching a lot of Chris Marker and Maya Deren. And I just read Marina Abramovic's memoir, which is profoundly inspiring.
Anything else you want your fans to know?
Mainly – thank you for your support, engagement and enthusiasm, especially during this wayward, hazy and anxiety-inducing time. We hope you'll enjoy the record, and we're super-psyched to play shows all over the place when concerts are indeed a viable concern once again. Stay well, breathe deep, and celebrate and nurture the connections that enrich, comfort, soothe and embolden you.

A Prayer Against Depression Anxiety and Panic Attacks ( the spirit heaviness )
Father In Jesus Name Lord Thank You For Dying On The Cross For Me. Please Forgive Me of My Sins.
I Forgive Every One Who Has Hurt Me and Have Done Me Wrong.
Isaiah 61:1 States that "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
I Pray For The Spirit of The Lord God To Rise Up Inside of Me. Lord Please Bind Up My Broken Heart. Give Me Liberty and Set Me Free.
Isaiah 61:2 Says "To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;" God, Let This Be The Year of Your Revenge Against the enemy And Comfort Me and All Who Mourn.
Isaiah 61:3 "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified."
God Give Me Your Spirit of Beauty And Replace The Ashes Of My Broken Heart. Take Away The Mourning And Give Me Your Spirit Of The Oil Of Joy. Lord, Remove the spirit of heaviness And Give Me Your Spirit Of The Garment Of Praise. Make Me A Tree Of Righteousness That Is Planted By You So That You May Be Glorified.
Isaiah 61:4 Says "And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations."
God, Make Me A Brand New Person. Repair Me. Fix Me. Disolve And Break Every Generational Curse That Plagues Me And My Family.
In Jesus Name.
Isaiah 61:5 States "And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers."
Lord I Pray That You Make My Enemies Subject To Me. Confuse, Divide, And Destroy Them. Send Them All Far Beneath My Feet Permanently.
I Give You All Of The Honor, Praise And Glory Forever. Amen

Jason Gillespie’s England and Australia form guide ahead of the Ashes
England is going to fight it again with old Australia enemies when the Ashes 2019 gets to work on Thursday in Edgbaston.
It should be an exciting series, with two great bowling attacks against brittle batting line-ups in the summer.
Sportsmail columinst Jason Gillespie eagerly judges the form of both sides on a Thursday-expected start …
England Captain Joe Root and his Australian counterpart Tim Paine will fight it out for the urn
GUIDE FOR FORMS
RORY BURNS 4.5
He learns his craft and is a player selected for the Right reasons, has scored heavily for Surrey, but must have the opportunity to engage. Fair game for the selectors for giving a good run.
JASON ROY 5.5
Unconventional route to the test side and I feel that England is attacking a batsman at the top to put the burden back on the opposition bowlers.
Joe Root (capt) 7.5
Right call to go to three. You have to rely on the openers to do your job, get through the new ball and allow him to score big points.
Joe Denly 5.5
Managed to get a form behind him, with two big hundreds ahead of Kent, after missing the World Cup Leg-spider is not on the first row at test level but adds value.
England wants an attacking batsman in Jason Roy to put the attack back on the Australian attack attack
Jos Buttler 6
Due to his high standards, he experienced a relatively calm world cup, but we know what a good player he is. He needs a good long run at test level to show what he can do.
Ben Stokes 7
I like him at number 6, especially if he has a fair amount of overs. His first testton in Perth a few years ago against Mitchell Johnson in his splendor was pure class.
Jonny Bairstow (wkt) 6
Of course, scores quickly and should have been licensed quickly to be positive. My only concern is that he is often bowled. Sometimes throws his hands at the ball, but when he is in his best touch, he plays it under his nose late.
Moeen Ali 6.5
His batting has not been as effective as you would like, but he is on the side as a frontline spinner whose record was excellent over the past year . A good player but needs patience with the bat.
Ben Stokes will repeat his testton in Perth a few years ago at no. 6
Chris Woakes 7
Pretty common in the beginning of Ireland Test but came back with a bang. Has benefited from some poor batting and willingness to maintain disciplined lines and lengths, making it dangerous when the ball nibbled from the seam.
Stuart Broad 7
When he is at his best, he takes his wickets, pinches batsmen on the front foot, bent and lbws, suggesting that his height is the key. Think back to his eight for 15 against Australia on Trent Bridge. Devastating.
James Anderson 7.5
Coming back from a calf injury, he is destroyed in domestic cricket with 30 wickets under 10. He will test Australia's batting with his ability to to move it both ways.
England James Anderson will Australia & batting testing with its ability to swing it both ways
AUSTRALIA FORM GUIDE
David Warner 7
Played some good hits on the World Cup but had little first-rate cricket to gauge him. But he is ready for the fight against the new ball.
Cameron Bancroft 7
Sussex played Durham twice recently and even when he didn't get a lot of runs he found a way to hang out with us. Australia wants him to be the man who blunts English bowling by having them play second and third spells.
Usman Khawaja 5.5
Another player with a precious small cricket in the build-up due to injury, but he knows what he will be doing in a test match at three o'clock and will have a give a good report of themselves.
Steve Smith 6
Like Warner and Bancroft, he will be confronted with abuse of the stands. His batting is world class and he will diligently prepare his plans for these circumstances. No one will have hit more balls last week.
David Warner will be more than ready for the fight against the new ball during the Ashes
Travis Head 6.5
A big hundred against England Lions gives him confidence and he has a good record after eight tests, on average 50. His big challenge is to turn his starts into big scores.
Matthew Wade 6.5
Has scored heavy runs with a very clip and is still a selection despite not playing Test a while cricket.
Tim Paine (capt / wkt) 6
Also in his leaders not done wrong ip or with the bat since last year his recall was transferred. His guard was also of high class.
Pat Cummins 7
One of Australia's best bowlers for a while. Comes at a good pace to a normal spot on the wicket and gets enough movement of the surfaces here to cause top-order problems.
Pat Cummins gets enough movement of the surfaces to cause problems of the highest cause order
James Pattinson 7
In good condition with the ball, running and bowling missiles. A bowler who can change game in a short time is always dangerous. Ready to go after three years of injury in the international wilderness.
Peter Siddle 7.5
If you went for horses, he would be the likely starter for Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. Just like Bancroft, I have the feeling that it has enjoyed a strong form with Essex.
Nathan Lyon 7
The Goat. The best of all time when it comes to off-spin in Australia. A great competitor, and especially the team song leads so can't be left out!
Seamer Peter Siddle from Australia benefited from a strong form here with Essex

Meet aikdog
Who is Aikdog?
I am a 42 year old Supply Chain Project Manager. I've been with my girlfriend for 13 years and we live together on a small farm in Florida.
What are some of your hobbies?
Mostly taking care of our wide range of pets and animals: 4 goats, 4 ducks, chickens, tortoise, 4 ferrets, 5 cats, and 1 Rhodesian Ridgeback. Luckily my girlfriend is a Vet! I also love concerts and professional wrestling as well. I try to do Yoga and running to keep in shape.
What is your favorite sport?
College Football is my favorite but I enjoy the other three major US team sports as well.
Who is your all-time favorite athlete?
Dominique Wilkins. One of the most explosive and graceful basketball players ever.
What is your favorite team?
Georgia Bulldogs even though I went to school at their two biggest rival colleges.
What is your favorite song/musical artist?
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is favorite artist and probably One Big Holiday by My Morning Jacket is favorite song. I love music festivals and am going this weekend to one in Boston with Tool and Sigur Ros.
What is your favorite movie/book/TV show?
There Will Be Blood or Blade Runner for film.
Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract for book.
Deadwood for TV all time and probably Ash vs. Evil Dead currently. What is you favorite sports moment of all-time?
Michael Johnson catching a TD pass on 4 and 15 for UGA to beat Auburn and go to their first SEC title game.
What is your favorite WIS moment?
When Carlos Wilfredo combined with others to pitch a no hitter in the World Series.
Who is your favorite HBD player you have coached?
Probably my current superstar Santos Perez. He has won three MVPs in a row. I've had bad luck with HOFs. I've never had a player make it that has played exclusively for my team or the majority of his career in Gibson.

Traders v Journos
EVERYONE’S an expert. But sometimes it takes a live Fantasy Draft to prove that. So this week, The Traders went head to head with 13 of AFL.com.au’s finest minds to pick a squad of winners.
The brief was simple – a snake draft (so pick No.1 has to wait until pick No.32 for their next selection) and a team made up of three defenders, four midfielders, three forwards, a ruckman and four emergencies of any position.
It took 90 minutes and complete concentration from 16 distracted stats-heads in four states. Here’s how the draft played out and the coaches’ excuses below.
Lee Gaskin (AFL.com.au writer) – The Lethal Weapons
Defenders: Jason Johannisen (pick 41), Tom McDonald (137), Ricky Henderson (169) Midfielders: Luke Parker (9), Ollie Wines (88), Seb Ross (120), David Mundy (152) Forwards: Touk Miller (56), Josh Caddy (73), Mark LeCras (105) Ruckman: Sam Jacobs (24) Emergencies: Rhys Stanley (184 – RUC/FWD), Rory Atkins (201 – MID), Cale Hooker (216 – DEF/FWD), Hugh McCluggage (233 – MID/FWD)
I wanted to take a ruckman with my first selection, but I couldn’t pass up Luke Parker when he was still on the board at pick No.9. Getting Sam Jacobs in the second round was probably a reach, but there’s not much depth in that position. From there, I focused on getting a couple of forwards who also play in the midfield (Touk Miller and Josh Caddy) and stocking up my bench at the end with dual-position players to cover the bye rounds. I took a punt Ricky Henderson will be in Hawthorn’s best 22. If he’s not, then my backline is pretty thin as I’ve only got Cale Hooker on the bench as cover.
Best pick: I was pretty stoked to get Ollie Wines at pick 88. He’s the out and out star of the Port Adelaide midfield and will find plenty of the footy this year.
The one I missed: Zach Tuohy would’ve been a great addition to my backline before Calvin snared him with pick 111. I saw Tuohy play against the Crows on Sunday and he’s going to be a ripper for the Cats.
Travis King (AFL.com.au writer) – When We Were Kings
Defenders: Shaun Burgoyne (pick 85), Jarrad McVeigh (117), Sharrod Wellingham (149) Midfielders: Nat Fyfe (12), Dustin Martin (21), Luke Shuey (76), Nathan Jones (140) Forwards: Josh J. Kennedy (53), Cyril Rioli (108), Taylor Walker (172) Ruckman: Aaron Sandilands (44) Emergencies: Pearce Hanley (181 – MID), Taylor Duryea (204 – DEF), Mav Weller (213 – FWD), Nathan Vardy (RUC – 236)
As an optimistic former Carlton coach one said, I can’t see where I’m going to lose a game this season. My midfield is stacked with stars, and snaring Nat Fyfe with pick 12 was an absolute steal – let alone Dusty at a bargain pick 21. Luke Shuey looks like he could win the Brownlow, and I’m expecting Sandi to dominate the ruck without midfielders jumping all over his back at stoppages. My strategy was to load up the engine room and forward line, and JK, Tex and Cyril could win me matches off their own boots. I’m sweating on Jarrad McVeigh’s fitness for round one, but I can bank on Shaun ‘Silk’ Burgoyne week-in, week-out down back and Sharrod Wellingham has been on fire in the JLT Community Series. Give me the premiership cup now.
Best pick: I’m expecting Luke Shuey to explode this year with Sam Mitchell taking some pressure of his shoulders, so grabbing him with pick 76 looks like excellent business.
The one I missed: Had my eye on Kade Kolodjashnij as a handy defender late in the draft before Ash Browne swooped. Still, I’m not unhappy with McVeigh at pick 117.
Ben Sutton (AFL.com.au sub-editor) – Wylie’s Buzzmen
Defenders: Matthew Boyd (pick 36), Josh Smith (132), Hayden Crozier (164) Midfielders: Tom Rockliff (4), Joel Selwood (61), Callan Ward (93), Sam Menegola (157) Forwards: Lance Franklin (29), Tom Lynch (ADE – 68), Scott Lycett (125) Ruckman: Tom Hickey (100) Emergencies: Travis Boak (189 – MID), Tom Phillips (196 – MID/FWD), Jarrod Harbrow (221 – DEF), Trent Dumont (228 – MID)
My strategy was thrown out the door when the undisputed GOAT of Fantasy was still available at pick four. With captains in play, Rocky could net me 250 points a week, so that was a no-brainer selection. I was keen to lock in a gun for each line with the ageless Matthew Boyd and superstar Lance Franklin headlining my defence and forward line. Skippers Joel Selwood and Callan Ward fill out a strong midfield and while I left my ruck selection late, Tom Hickey should be solid and I also snaffled Scott Lycett as another option. My defence is lacking some serious scoring potential, so I’ll be looking to orchestrate a trade or find a gem from the free agent pool early on in the season.
Best pick: I still can’t get over Tom Rockliff at No.4, but my best pick could end up being Callan Ward at No.93.
The one I missed: I had Rory Laird (or Sam Docherty) penciled in with my second pick, but was scrambling after Roy and Warnie took them in the two picks before me. I also thought Zach Tuohy would be mine in the seventh round, but was undone by another Trader with Calvin swooping a few picks before me.
Michael Rogers (AFL.com.au sub-editor) – Red and Blue Bloods
Defenders: Kade Simpson (pick 31), Jasper Pittard (127), Lee Spurr (159) Midfielders: Stephen Coniglio (34), Andrew Gaff (63), Josh Kelly (66), Jaeger O’Meara (98) Forwards: Angus Brayshaw (95), Jordan de Goey (130), Matthew Wright (162) Ruckman: Max Gawn (2) Emergencies: Jack Newnes (191 – MID), Robbie Tarrant (194 – DEF), Jack Darling (223 – FWD), Jackson Trengove (226 – RUC)
With pick No.2 and then No.31, I had to decide whether to go for an elite ruck or a top-line midfielder first-up. With big men thin on the ground, it was a relatively easy choice to go for Max Gawn. Getting Stephen Coniglio at No.34 was a pleasant surprise, as was landing Andrew Gaff at No.63. I opted for reliable performers down back (Kade Simpson, Jasper Pittard), leaving me to pick on potential up forward (Angus Brayshaw, Jordan De Goey). It’s fair to say there’s a lot riding on the shoulders of those youngsters in attack, as well as Jaeger O’Meara’s dodgy knee. If any of those go bust, my Fantasy fortunes will almost certainly follow.
Best pick: Thrilled to get Gaff at pick 63. The Eagles look set to fire again this year and he’ll be a big part of it. Tons every week out of the west.
The one I missed: I was targeting a gun defender with my second pick and Rory Laird loomed large, but Warnie swooped three picks earlier. Kade Simpson softened the blow but I’d rather have had the Crow.
Ben Guthrie (AFL.com.au writer) – Yeezy
Defenders: Jeremy Howe (pick 65), Dane Rampe (129), Jackson Thurlow (160) Midfielders: Patrick Dangerfield (1), Sam Mitchell (32), Robbie Gray (97), Brad Ebert (161) Forwards: Devon Smith (64), Caleb Daniel (96), Bradley Hill (128) Ruckman: Paddy Ryder (33) Emergencies: Easton Wood (192 – DEF), Clayton Oliver (193 – MID), Orazio Fantasia (224 – FWD), Cameron Guthrie (225 – MID)
I had the No.1 selection and did what any sane person would do, picking Patrick Dangerfield. Dangerfield is in the prime of his career and it’s difficult to see how he won’t be in the top five players in the competition again in 2017. Eagles recruit Sam Mitchell was too good to pass up with my second pick – he wins the football and will be a valuable asset for his new team. Patrick Ryder will be hungry and ready to perform after a year out of the game and I’m a big fan of him as a ruckman. Star midfielder Robbie Gray is in for another big year and his stoppage work will benefit greatly as a result of having Ryder available. Interesting to note that my forward line has players who can all play in the midfield, so I am hoping Devon Smith, Caleb Daniel and Bradley Hill spend a lot of time up the ground in 2017.
Best pick: Clayton Oliver is going to be a star and all signs point to him having a breakout season for Melbourne. Oliver, already regarded as one of Melbourne’s best stoppage players, is going to play a lot of minutes in the midfield as he continues his progression. At pick No. 193, I was quick to snap him up.
The one I missed: Tom Liberatore is a genuine gun and when he was available late in the draft I was ready to pounce. That was until Fyfe and Death came along to spoil my day. Libba would’ve complemented my midfield beautifully and would have been a steal at pick No. 158.
Chris Correia (AFL.com.au sub-editor) – Ross’ Bosses
Defenders: Robert Murphy (pick 57), Michael Hurley (121), Matthew Broadbent (168) Midfielders: Tom Mitchell (8), Dayne Beams (25), Patrick Cripps (89), Jack Ziebell (104) Forward: Tom Lynch (GC, 72), Steve Johnson (136), Tim Membrey (200) Ruckman: Shane Mumford (40) Emergencies: Mitch Duncan (185 – MID), Josh Jenkins (153 – FWD), Matthew Lobbe (217 – RUC), Aaron Francis (232 – FWD/DEF)
My strategy was to hopefully receive pick No.1 and to dismantle the competition from there. After being ‘randomly’ drawn pick No.8 it was panic stations early. With just one ruck spot to fill, I prayed a premium tall would sneak through until my first choice. But with three of them already gone before it got to me, I felt like I needed to change tack. I used all of my allocated 60 seconds before settling on Tom Mitchell, who I’m expecting to take his game to another level at the Hawks. I focused on another key mid and then getting the best available ruck, defender and forward before filling in the gaps. I tried to not select players on the same bye round but the time limit had me scrambling. I thoroughly enjoyed my first AFL Fantasy Draft and the clear highlight was hearing Cameron Noakes say, “How do you cancel?”
Best pick: I was thrilled to see new Lions skipper Dayne Beams still available at my second-round selection of pick No.25. Now while he may be a risk given his recent injury woes, if he stays fit I’m confident he can get back to his best, where he averaged 116.3 in 2012.
The one I missed: I’ve been losing sleep over this one. I wanted a forward and with this rising Sun still available, my mouse was hovering on him for pick 57. But in came Lee Gaskin to steal Touk Miller at pick 56.
Warnie (The Traders) – Warne Dawgs
Defenders: Rory Laird (pick 28), Leigh Montagna (37), Josh Gibson (133) Midfielders: Adam Treloar (5), Gary Ablett (60), Aaron Hall (69), Matt Crouch (101) Forwards: Koby Stevens (92), Justin Westhoff (124), Richard Douglas (165) Ruckman: Ben McEvoy (156) Emergencies: Andrew Mackie (188 – DEF), Nick Graham (197 – MID/FWD), Mitch Robinson (220 – MID), Brayden Fiorini (229 – MID)
With the captain option on for this league, with pick five I had to grab someone who I could rely on to get me hefty scores for double points week in, week out. Adam Treloar has proven to be Fantasy star and I can see him averaging 110 plus again this season. It did, however, mean I missed out on a decent ruck so I waited until the end of the draft to take Ben McEvoy who I’m hoping will improve on his recent output as the Hawks’ No.1 man. Taking Rory Laird and Leigh Montagna early was tactical due to the lack of depth in defence. My forward line is a worry but if Ken Hinkley gives Justin Westhoff a run up the wing, he could prove to be a match-winner for the Warne Dawgs. Look out for Matt Crouch to be the breakout star of my list and pump out consistent Fantasy tons, as I try to prove my worth as the No. 1 Fantasy expert of the team at AFL Media.
Best pick: Is pick 60 the lowest Gary Ablett has gone in any Draft? If he spends time forward, I will welcome FWD status in round six, 12 or 18 and take his 95-100 average. If he plays mostly in the midfield then his 105-100 average will suit me just fine!
The one I missed: While I was happy with Gaz at pick 60, I was waiting for another potential DPP addition in Brent Stanton as my fourth round selection. But no, Roy had to grab him to spite me. He doesn’t even like Stants. Maybe there is already a trade offer sitting in his inbox for the Bomber ball-magnet …
Calvin (The Traders) – Calvinator
Defenders: Bernie Vince (pick 47), Jake Lloyd (50), Zach Tuohy (111) Midfielders: Ed Curnow (143), Brandon Ellis (146), Scott Thompson (175), Anthony Miles (207) Forwards: Nick Riewoldt (15), Brett Deledio, Steven Motlop (82) Ruckman: Stefan Martin (18) Emergencies: Harley Bennell (114 – MID/FWD), Ben Reid (178 – DEF), Darcy Parish (210 – MID), Archie Smith (239 – RUC)
Due to the extensive knowledge I have about Fantasy Draft, it was imperative that I left my midfield position to very last. There are 45 midfielders to choose from who averaged 95+ last year. However, in the rucks and forwards there are only five players combined who share such an average. You don’t have to be Einstein to understand that forward and ruck have become areas of urgency and snapping up Nick Riewoldt and Stefan Martin in the opening two rounds was a stroke of genius.
Best pick: With my final bench selection I chose Archie Smith in a sneaky manoeuvre known in the industry as ‘pocketing’ or ‘handcuffing’. If Stefan Martin was to go down injured (heaven forbid) then his teammate, Smith would be the guy who gets tapped on the shoulder to replace him. The one I missed: It didn’t break my heart, but I did have Brent Stanton highlighted as a player who will most likely get defender status. DestROY gambled on him though… so now I hope he stays as a midfielder all year.
Roy (The Traders) – destROY
Defenders: Sam Docherty (pick 27), Luke Hodge (38), Sam Mayes (166) Midfielders: Brent Stanton (59), Bryce Gibbs (70), Michael Barlow (91), Shaun Grigg (198) Forwards: Shaun Higgins (102), Josh Dunkley (123), Nathan Hrovat (134) Ruckman: Brodie Grundy (6) Emergencies: Liam Picken (187 – MID), Kieren Jack (MID – 155), Toby McLean (219 – FWD), Nick Vlastuin (166 – DEF)
As we are playing with just one ruck and going 16 coaches deep in our league, finding a good big man was a priority with my first selection, hence building my team around Brodie Grundy at pick six. As many of the top mids were being taken early, I took the opportunity to build a strong backline with Sam Docherty, Luke Hodge and round six dual-position certainty Brent Stanton making up the best defence in our league.
Best pick: I grabbed Liam Picken for my bench with pick 187 in the expectation he will gain dual-position status in round six, allowing me to throw him forward to assist my inexperienced forward line.
The one I missed: I don’t think I missed anyone, but in my late hunting for dual-position players, I probably went a little early drafting Kieren Jack with pick 155 as a midfielder. With so many up and coming midfield guns for the Swans, I see Jack having an impact off a flank and hopefully repaying my faith with another position to his name by season’s end.
Nathan Schmook (AFL.com.au writer) – The Re-Plumbers
Defenders: Michael Hibberd (pick 54), Callum Mills (75), Grant Birchall (118) Midfielders: Marcus Bontempelli (11), Rory Sloane (22), Lachie Hunter (86), Brendon Goddard (107) Forwards: Toby Greene (43), Jacob Hopper (150), Blake Acres (171) Ruckman: Tom Campbell (139) Emergencies: Dylan Roberton (182 – DEF), Ryan Griffen (203 – MID), Jake Stringer (214 – FWD), Billy Longer (235 – RUC)
I’m a sucker for players on the rise, so snaring The Bont at pick 11 was a great start in my book, and Adelaide’s midfield woes will heap more responsibility on Rory Sloane (pick 22), who will just rack up more footy. I missed the cream of the forwards and defenders, but Toby Greene (43) and Callum Mills (75) were great value for rising players in top four teams. With proven performers in Michael Hibberd (54), Lachie Hunter (86) and Brendon Goddard (107) secured, things were going well until I hit pick 139. This was a chance to add to my forward line and it was a choice between Jacob Hopper and Josh Jenkins. I ended up with Western Bulldogs ruckman Tom Campbell. I’ll keep a closer eye on the countdown clock next time, but here’s to a strong year and fantasy relevant scores from big Tom!
Best pick: In a high-scoring team that will wallop some opponents this year, Toby Greene will notch some big scores. The All Australian was a bargain at pick 43 and should at least hold his 2016 average of 92.
The one I missed: I’ve seen enough of Jack Billings this pre-season to know he’ll be a jet in 2017. He was locked and loaded for pick 86 before Cameron Noakes swooped, leaving me to go with a pure midfielder in Lachie Hunter.
Ricky Cahn (Telstra Fantasy Product Manager) – Fantasy HQ
Defenders: Taylor Adams (pick 13), Hamish Hartlett (77), Shane Biggs (148) Midfielders: Matt Priddis (45), Dayne Zorko (52), Marc Murphy (109), Liam Shiels (173) Forwards: Jack Macrae (20), Jesse Hogan (84), Levi Greenwood (116) Ruckman: Matthew Kreuzer (141) Emergencies: Mark Baguley (180 – DEF), Jack Redden (205 – MID), Ben Cunnington (212 – MID), Rhys Palmer (237 – FWD)
Pick 13 isn’t the ideal place to start, but in this position I decided to go for the best defender and forward. My strategy is always to try and get defenders and forwards who play plenty of time in the midfield so Adams, Hartlett, Macrae and Greenwood fit the bill nicely. My midfield perhaps could be stronger but Priddis is super consistent, Zorko could be looking at a 110+ season and Murphy has finally had a full pre-season, so whilst there is a bit of risk here I think there’s plenty of upside. The player I’m most excited about is Jesse Hogan, if he starts to play up the ground then he could be anything! I do need to engage the Fantasy gods early because if Kreuz goes down then I’m in a lot of trouble! Looking at my bench, Redden has two weeks to prove himself or he’s out!
Best pick: I’m sure I’ll cop it for this, but my best pick could be Rhys Palmer. Watch him play plenty of midfield time for the Blues and rack up an 80+ average.
The one I missed: The player I’m most upset about missing out on is David Armitage. He went in the 11th round and is an absolute steal there! Watch for a huge season from him.
Tim Roman (AFL.com.au sub-editor) – Tanking Early
Defenders: Zac Williams (pick 58), James Kelly (103), Curtly Hampton (122) Midfielders: Dyson Heppell (39), Jobe Watson (135), David Swallow (154), David Armitage (167) Forwards: Luke Dahlhaus (26), Jack Martin (71), Christian Petracca (90) Ruckman: Todd Goldstein (7) Emergencies: Jamie MacMillan (186 – DEF), Matthew Leuenberger (199 – RUC), Travis Colyer (218 – FWD), Sam Gibson (231 – MID)
Just one member of my starting midfield played any football at all in 2016, and David Armitage was the last one I picked. So it’s fair to say these are unchartered waters. My team seems to be a weird mix of potential and … er … Bombers. Goldy was my first pick so there’s a solid base – indeed, if this team was playing in 2015, an Armitage/Goldstein combination would just about make me a premiership lock. I was delighted to get my hands on Petracca who could score anything this year in the forward line. Jack Martin is in a similar boat. But it’s a leap of faith to assume Curtly Hampton’s JLT form will play out the same way in the regular season. Likewise, that old ‘Pops’ Kelly will keep up his wonderful Fantasy work from last year as he gets some quality help around him. Still, on a positive note, I’d always thought Jamie MacMillan and Sam Gibson were the same person, so finally I’ll get to see what they do differently.
Best pick: Probably David Armitage at 167, although given Trav Colyer’s form in late 2015 before his suspension, pick 218 for the pacy Bomber seems an absolute steal.
The one I missed: I had Brayden Fiorini sitting my queue for about 30 minutes as I watched with glee while my fellow coaches completely forget his Fantasy value. Unfortunately, Warnie twigged two picks early and snaffled the young Sun at 229. Sam Gibson seems poor compensation.
Dion Bennett (AFL.com.au social media) – Bennett’s Bondi Billionaires
Defenders: Brodie Smith (pick 119), Matt Suckling (151), Alex Rance (170) Midfielders: Dan Hannebery (10), Lachie Neale (23), Steele Sidebottom (42), Dylan Shiel (55) Forwards: Jarryd Roughead (74), Jamie Elliott (106), Elliot Yeo (138) Ruckman: Tom Nicholls (87) Emergencies: Brad Crouch (183 – MID), Jack Watts (202 – FWD), Tom Langdon (215 – DEF), Jarrod Witts (134 – RUC)
If defense really does win championships I’m in trouble, but the midfield quartet of Dan Hannebery, Lachie Neale, Steele Sidebottom and Dylan Shiel has the look of a premiership-winning side. The ninth pick (my first) was pegged for one of Luke Parker or Hannebery from the start; such are my expectations for their continued growth this season. Although Nat Fyfe and Marcus Bontempelli were tempting while I was on the clock, Hannebery’s consistency won out. The strategy of building from the inside (mids) out left me light on elsewhere. I’ll need some out-of-the-box performances from Brodie Smith, Jarryd Roughead and Tom Nicholls to be any chance of taking home the silverware.
Best pick: Dylan Shiel at 55 was a steal – he’s an A-grader playing midfield minutes for the flag favourites. His average could skyrocket.
The one I missed: I was flat when Isaac Heeney disappeared off the board just a few picks ahead of me as I’d planned to build my forward line around him. I had to change course and was left with a Jack Watts and Jamie Elliott combo.
Tyson Densley (AFL.com.au social media) – Fyfe & Death
Defenders: Bachar Houli (pick 67), Jacob Weitering (126), Jake Carlisle (163) Midfielders: Zach Merrett (3), Jack Viney (35), Dion Prestia (99), Tom Liberatore (158) Forwards: Isaac Smith (30), Michael Walters (94), Eddie Betts (131) Ruckman: Tom Boyd (62) Emergencies: David Zaharakis (190 – MID), Mitch Wallis (195 – MID/FWD), Matt Dea (222 – DEF), Ivan Maric (227 – RUC)
This is a keeper league, right? I’ve definitely had better drafts, but I’m hoping the youthful exuberance will be of some benefit … somehow. I’m asking big questions of young midfielders with Zach Merrett, Jack Viney and Dion Prestia shouldering the load. If they don’t fire, we’re in trouble. There’s risky selections across the park, but I think Tom Boyd in the ruck could work with no third man up to strangle him this year and hopefully still a good swag of goals. Similarly, Jake Carlisle could go either way, but being able to plonk him in the backline helped. I hope to see Weitering play further up the ground at times, but will have to monitor that one closely. Isaac Smith and Michael Walters will have points to prove this year and I expect their numbers to increase. I had to let auto-pick fill out my bench. Dea and Maric will need to train well over the next fortnight. With the lowest projected round one score, I figure I have nothing to lose and all the pressure is on the opposition …
Best pick: Zach Merrett had a break-out Fantasy year in 2016, and with better support around him this year should go well again.
The one I missed: Too many to mention. I was close to snaffling Nat Fyfe first up to keep the team name relevant, but thought he might slip to my round two pick. Not even close.
Cameron Noakes (AFL.com.au chief sub-editor) – POWP
Defenders: Heath Shaw (pick 17), Tom Cutler (144), Christian Salem (145) Midfielders: Josh Kennedy (16), Jordan Lewis (49), Trent Cotchin (112), Tom Scully (113) Forwards: Jack Billings (80), Jack Steele (81), Jack Riewoldt (176) Ruckman: Kurt Tippett (48) Emergencies: Rory Lobb (177 – FWD), Zac Smith (208 – RUC), Sam Gray (209 – MID), Zak Jones (240 – DEF)
With the last pick in the draft, it felt like my strategy was to watch all of my preferred picks disappear before my very eyes, forcing to me into panic and impulse selecting. Is this a feeble attempt at an excuse? Hell yes. Do I still think I will be lifting silverware at season’s end? Of course. Sydney ball-magnet Josh Kennedy will take me to the promised land, ably supported by new Dee and former Hawk Jordan Lewis. Why Kennedy? Well, he’s Mr Reliable and the Swans’ new skipper has been sizzling in the pre-season. He’ll lead by example. Why Lewis? I reckon he’s out to leave a little egg on the faces of some old friends from Hawthorn. For the first season ever, I’m yelling, ‘Go Jordie’. I’m also backing in Brownlow medallist Trent Cotchin to put the gloom of 2016 behind him and turn back the clock (hopefully just to 2012, no earlier, Trent!).
Best pick: Not sure there is one, but Sam Gray feels like a cunning selection and certainly a more than handy mid to have sitting on the bench.
The one I missed: Well, as stated, with the last pick in the draft I missed them all. In retrospect, it would have been prudent to snap up Max Gawn with my first pick rather than go for a mid.
Ashley Browne (AFL.com.au writer) – FC Hashbrowne
Defenders: Kade Kolodjashnij (pick 110), Shane Savage (142), Nick Haynes (147) Midfielders: Jack Steven (14), Scott Pendlebury (19), Dom Tyson (115), Stephen Hill (174) Forwards: Jack Gunston (46), Isaac Heeney (51), Chad Wingard (78) Ruckman: Toby Nankervis (83) Emergencies: Luke Breust (179 – FWD), Jordan Roughead (276 – RUC), Jarryd Lyons (211 – MID), Caleb Marchbank (238 – DEF)
The best part of taking part in an AFL Fantasy draft is when you hear the groans of disappointment when you pick up a player so many others had their eye on. So I was excited to pick up rising Sydney star Isaac Heeney as a forward, comfortable in the knowledge he will likely play through the midfield for most of the year. Of course, those groans from my opponents turned to sniggers (except from Swans tragics Cameron Noakes and Dion Bennett) on Tuesday when news emerged that Heeney had come down with glandular fever and will miss the first few weeks of the season. I was delighted to take St Kilda’s Jack Steven with my first pick. He is a ball magnet and an early favourite to make the All Australian team after just missing out the last two seasons. I’m looking for a big season from Hawk Jack Gunston, picked as forward but who will spend plenty of time up the ground in 2017. And any reason to barrack for The Chad is good enough for me.
Best pick: I might have reached a little for new Richmond ruckman Toby Nankervis but the word is that a) the Swans wanted to keep him and b) Tiger coach Damien Hardwick is quite smitten by him. He’s ahead of any other Tiger big man, he’s mobile and good with the ball, so I was happy to snare him.
The one I missed: Both Jarryd Roughead and Jaeger O’Meara are good value this year after having missed so much footy, but I was unable to grab them in time. Both will score well this year playing through the rebuilt Hawthorn midfield.
