Could you do a snippet of Asahi from FFXIV for the prompt "voice"?
[Send me a fandom, character, or pairing and a one word prompt and I'll write a quick drabble for you!]
(CW: Child-abuse, victim blaming and general Garlean-Doma cultural problems.)
There are certain things that are not said in the Naeuri household.
Asahi's parents are very efficient at teaching him this lesson, without ever needing to put it into so many words. 'No' is the biggest taboo. His parents might occasionally phrase things as questions or requests, but the acceptable answer is always clear cut and obvious: ‘yes’, ‘at once’, ‘of course father’, ‘right away mother’. A negative answer is never expected or acceptable, even to rhetorical questions. If it ever seems like what they want is no, then what they really want is for him to stay quiet and express nothing.
On the rare occasion they actually want to know something specific- usually how his lessons on imperial etiquette or the Garlean tongue are going- they want a clean, concise report of what he has learned.
He’s long since mastered the art of giving his answers in a cool monotone, keeping a tight clamp on his emotions to prevent disappointment or excitement from showing. The best-case scenario is a sharp word and a reminder to stay on topic, the worst case well…
It had only needed to come to that once or twice.
Asahi knows that his opinions and feelings are of no consequence. His parents are only interested in his progress and the value it represents. His mother is tight fisted with their meager gil and every coin they pay to his tutor is spent with the hope of one day being repaid. Their questions are not made with the interest of parents in their son’s education, but stakeholders checking on an investment. Sentiment is for other people. People who don’t intend to rise above their circumstances.
Asahi’s parents are very aware of what they want- both from him and the world- and remarkably clear headed about how to get it. Asahi will learn to speak perfect Garlean, and master the manners and mores of the Empire. He will attend the military academy and find service with a high ranking legateus. He will make good connections and marry well. His parents will have comfort and wealth and never again have to toil in the dirt and crack their own fingernails. Anything that contradicts this plan is not to be considered or spoken of. To speak something is to threaten to make it real in their eyes- so doubt, reservation, and contradiction are ruthlessly and efficiently stamped out. And if it can not be stamped out, it is ignored.
It is this blindness that Asahi learns to manipulate early and often. If he leaves out a difficulty he is having in his lessons, or fails to bring up how a Garlean solider spat on him and called him a ‘filthy black eye’ then his parents will never learn of it on their own. They don’t want him to be struggling and so will accept his reports of success without question. As long as he keeps a tight grip on his emotions and tells them what they wish to hear, he has nothing to be afraid of.
It's something Yotsuyu has never managed to figure out. Yotsuyu presumes that, because something is true or right that it should matter. Yotsuyu thinks that because her anger is righteous, it deserves to be given voice, that because their situation is unjust and cruel, that is reason enough to speak about it. Her stubborn refusal to master her anger and outrage is the reason she ends sobbing and carrying heavy pails of water on a back striped with bloody welts so often, or else sent to the dark of the barn without supper or a blanket.
It’s her own fault, Asahi tells himself resolutely and frequently, every time mother seizes Yotsuyu by the hair or father hurtles a dish in her direction. It is not as if they have been unclear about the rules of the game with either of them. She acts as if her refusal to play at all is somehow noble. As if acknowledging that it’s wrong, all of it- the Empire, their parents, their society- will somehow change anything.
But Asahi knows better. Giving voice to such things is a useless exercise. The only way to change things is with power, and the only path to power is to play the game.
He tells her that one night as he’s helping clean and dress the cuts along her back and she laughs at him.
“You think if you get enough head pats and good marks and smiles you’ll have power?” She says through choked, ugly tears. “Real power? That if you bow and scrape and please enough, that it will matter somehow?”
Anger surges in him and he clamps it down before he can do more then press down the cloth a little to hard. Still Yotsuyu hisses and throws him a glare.
“I think it’s better then giving up.” He says quietly, instead of throwing down the cloth the way he wants too. He knows Yotsuyu hates him. He hates her a little bit too, for the strange cold feeling that blooms in his chest every time he has to watch her beaten, and for the voice that whispers do something do something do something in the back of his mind, even though there is nothing he can do.
Yotsuyu tries to scrub some of her tears away, but all she succeeds in doing is pushing the wet streaks of dirt around her cheek. “That’s exactly what you’ve done. I’m still fighting, but you…you refuse to admit theirs even a problem.”
Asahi clenches his fist. “You call this fighting?” He snaps, then forces a breath through his clenched teeth, and makes his shoulders relax. “Yotsuyu, please if you would just-“
“No.” She says firmly. “Never.”
“If you don’t bend they will keep going until you break.” He says, closing his eyes tight and only opening them when he’s sure that no tears will come out. He’s gotten very good at doing that over the years. When he does Yotsuyu has turned around to stare at him. Her eyes are cold and dark, like the ocean on a stormy night.
“Then I will break.” She says quietly. “But at least I’ll be able to live with myself till then. Will you?”
Asahi hates her so much in that moment. He hates the unspoken accusation of cowardice, of weakness. He hates that he knows it’s true.
He wants to tell her that he loves her, that’s she’s the only person who has ever understood him. That she’s wrong, that it isn’t her against him and their parents, but that it’s him and her together against their parents. He wants to tell her that he hates seeing her suffer and he just wants it to stop. He wants to tell her that he will find a way to make this right.
But there isn’t a point. She wont believe him, and he’s learned long ago that giving voice to something, even it’s true, is useless.
So instead, he lays the cloth aside and stands and says. “At least I will still be alive to regret.”
And then he leaves.

Prompt #19: Taken
Timeline: 15 Years Pre-ARR.
WolZenos sort of? But moreso about how Aro got into the mess that is wishing to serve the Garlean royal family.
This one is a draft since I want it to be more fleshed out. But enjoy!
The crowd was a torrent of unmitigated excitement, there were chants and cheers along the lines of "Long live the Emperor!" ringing in the air. Arodaeus waded through the adults while also dragging along a whining Doman child- he didn't know why he was complaining, it was Asahi's idea to see the royal procession up close after all.
"Almost there, just push your way forward!" the miqo'te child said with a hint of excitement. And at last, the stood near the edge of the grand promenade.
They were just in time to witness the royal family passing by. Aro was excited- he would see the emperor, the princes and princesses! He let out a gasp of amazement when his eyes caught the glint of the emperor's armor.
Solus zos Galvus was in his sixties now, but the irrepressible air of commanding strength followed him still- not to mention he would still battle on the frontlines of the main campaigns of the empire.
Behind him followed the two princes in magitek walkers- Varis and Titus- the princess Arrecina sat next to his husband with their son, Nerva.
Meanwhile, following beside the car, General Hypatia had a war machina of her own. As expected- she was an honored warrior even before marrying into the family.
The adults were all fearsome leaders in their own right, Aro knew.
He noticed then, that Varis had his son with him too.
What Aro did not guess is that he would fall for one of the members of the family just by a single glance. He was absolutely taken by him- he now recalled the name of the seldomly-spoken young son of Varis.
Prince Zenos yae Galvus.
He had medium length blond hair, a build that would in time match his fathers, and striking blue eyes. Their age must've been close as well, for the young prince looked no older than thirteen summers.
Yes. He was taken. In that moment, he decided— he would serve Zenos as his honorable guard. And perhaps- maybe the prince might even one day become his knight in shining armor… Oh this was great— he had to tell his father right away. The Legionary training school after the Academy, that was the route he'd take! He would apply to change his rank to tomorrow, the process takes long for non-natives after all, even with his adoptive father's help.
"Don't zone out, idiot!" A voice called out next to him. But it was too late- right after Asahi's warning, a lively jostle from the crow made Aro lose his balance. He fell forward, stumbling right into the front of the large black car.
Oh no. Oh no no no.
The car stopped. This is big trouble, trouble even his father would't be able to get him out of. It would've been better to be trampled by the magitek walkers than to interrupt his Radiance's route.
He felt dizzy, and tried to get up. He could hear the voices of confusion around him. Slight red appeared on his hand when he wiped his nose.
Clink, clank.
Something heavy made his way to him. And then, an unmistakable voice spoke, he'd hear it on the radio at times. But this one was softer. "Stand, child."
He looked up and almost nearly cried. The Emperor towered over him- and his intense gaze was enough to suffocate Aro on the spot. But, he stood up, somehow.
The crowd murmured. Why did his Radiance deign to stop for this random non-native scoundrel? Where were his manners? Who was responsible for this child?
The guards moved in to subdue Aro, but were promptly stopped with a gesture from Solus. "You think me weak enough that a child could harm me? Stand down." They froze.
"I said. Stand. Down."
The guards backed away, leaving Solus and Aro in their own unoccupied little circle. Would he leave this circle alive? He shuddered, this wasn't supposed to happen, it wasn't his fault!
"Name."
"Y-Your Radiance?"
"Your name, child. Speak it."
… Perhaps he would get arrested formally. Oh well- it was better than being taken away forcefully.
"Arodaeus… Arodaeus cen… Viatorem," he said, his lips almost quivering.
Solus sighed, "Impressive, you have earned the honorable title of 'cen' at your age but somehow you still forget to salute your superior while talking to him."
Aro was taken aback- amidst the confusion and commotion, he forgot the basic and most important etiquette that was drilled into him.
Thankfully, the Emperor's words carried a certain jovial tone, which put the crowd at ease- some were even laughing… Aro snuck a glance up at the young prince Zenos who waiting next to his father on the walker that was halted- no readable expression on that one. Though his eyes seemed less empty than before.
Aro shook his head to focus and replied to the Emperor, "My apologies, your Radiance. Amidst the revelry, I lost my footing and seem to have interrupted the procession. Please- I accept any punishment you see just…"
Silence. And then, a crack of a smile forming of Solus's face. Not only a smile, but cackling. The audience - even his son and grandson - were shocked.
"Punishment? If I were to punish every citizen who tripped and fell, I would have no subjects left, young one!" He turned to the crowd. "As you can see from the exceptional grasp of language at such a tender age - and his rank besides- our reformed education can teach even the lowest of savages to become humble modern men! Citizens, I ask you to forgive this child's transgression- and celebrate the future of our nation."
The crowd roared. As they cheered, Solus bent low to whisper to Aro, "Do take my apologies for likening you to the foreign enemies- it is a game of politics, you see. You shall understand when you're older."
Aro nodded hastily and muttered a remark of understanding. Before Solus got up, he had one more things to say to the young miqo'te, "Oh and I suggest changing that surname. Pick another foster family if you must. I'm sure you must've realised the connotations…"
"I'll… try my best, your Radiance," Aro said half-heartedly. As much as he respected the Founder, he also respected his father, and didn't care for abandoning his legacy no matter the disadvantages it may give him.
Solus returned to his vehicle as Aro was escorted back into the crowd. The procession proceeded apace, and Aro swore Zenos shot him a cursory glance as their magitek went by. He sighed, it was likely something else in the crowd got his attention because not a moment sooner he was looking ahead, with a bored expression plastered on his face.
"There you are. I thought finally I had the dorm room to myself," Asahi grumbled. "So, what did he whisper to you? Tell me!"
Aro giggled, "Hmm… I'll tell you if I get the top bunk for, let's sayyy… the rest of the semester?"
"That's not fair- half a semester!"
"A whole semester or nothing!"
After the procession, they would finally relent at sunset and settle on three fourth's of a semester.

one thing i really like is how they obviously went out of their way to match asahi's speech patterns with his and yotsuyu's father. the guy is a minor NPC who barely has any lines, and yet despite him being an old man who doesn't particularly look like asahi he uses the exact same inflections and tone of voice. you've already been listening to asahi being a creep this whole time, and then suddenly if you're paying attention it becomes so clear where he got it from. he really does just sound exactly like his dad.
(and it makes absolutely everything about the situation that much more skin-crawling, considering what their father is actually saying in the scene where that stands out the most.)
again, minor NPC with very little screentime; it would have been easy for them to just give him A Voice and be done with it, and instead they took the opportunity to imply volumes about asahi and his dynamic with his family in such an effective, understated way. anyway the naeuri siblings are ruining my life

Erna felt sick as she came out of the vision. Both from the memory of viciously cutting down a pair of old people, as well as from what she felt. The despair that felt like an endless, yawning chasm from which there was no escape. The sense of inevitability. This, Yotsuyu believed, was how the world was supposed to work. It was cruel, it was painful, and there was no escape.
The bleeding old man—Yotsuyu's step-father—let out a feeble cough and reached towards Erna, his eyes already beginning to glaze over. Erna reflexively flinched away, her skin crawling with revulsion. She could still see the lecherous look he gave Yotsuyu, and hear the smarmy tone in his voice as he talked about his plans for the future. For his newly reunited Yotsuyu.
Don't touch me, you perverted old creep! Fray snarled in the back of her mind. What kind of monster looks at the child they've raised like that? Who talks about sellin' their daughter to a fucking brothel so he can fuck off and play at bein' a merchant elsewhere? Who fuckin' considers doin' that twice?
"Please," begged the old man. "I don't want to die..."
Erna cast a glance towards Lenar, ever the soft-hearted healer. Between her white magic and his sagecraft, they could probably save these two. It was only a couple of stab wounds, nothing they hadn't dealt with before.
But Lenar's hands remained firmly on his lap, balled into fists. He made no effort to soothe the dying man's pain as he fell limp and his last breath escaped his lungs.
Good fucking riddance.
"Any sign of her?" Hien called out. Erna looked up and saw him rushing towards them. As he drew nearer, however, his gaze fell to the two bodies and an expression of concern crossed his face. "What happened here?"
Erna got to her feet with a soft sigh, and began the unenviable task of filling Hien in. She glossed over what she saw in the vision, only telling him enough to explain why there were two dead bodies. Though she didn't go into detail about what was said, Hien still noticed the way she held her arms close to her chest when she got to the part where Yotsuyu's step-parents found her.
"He was planning on selling her to a brothel again," Lenar bluntly cut in, the disdain in his voice more than clear. "I suppose it was too much to ask that they might have learned their lesson from the first time around."
Hien grimaced, glancing back to Ernastral. Her gaze drifted to the ground, arms still wrapped tightly around herself.
"...After she killed 'em, Asahi showed up and they left together."
"Whatever Asahi wants with her, he was willing to pay for it with his parents' lives," Hien muttered, glancing towards the bodies.
"To call him cunning and vile seems like an understatement," Lenar remarked, getting to his feet. "But I suppose he had such excellent examples to follow."
Hien's grimace deepened. He shook his head with a sigh. "We must gather the others and inform them of our findings. And make proper arrangements for the Naeuris' remains."

Name | Asahi sas Brutus Formerly | Asahi Naeuri Occupation | Tribunus of the XIIth Legion, Ambassador plenipotentiary of Garlemald. Age | 27 Gender | Male; He/Him Species | Hyur Loyal to | Garlemald, Zenos yae Glavus, the Populares
Asahi Naeuri was born as the sole child and heir of House Naeuri; though his cousin Yotsuyu had been taken in by his parents before his birth and so he grew up seeing her as a sister. He was raised believing he was special; his parents' golden child. He spent his days training in combat and studying history. When he was seven, he was sold to the Empire and sent away for education. He still thought he was special. He learned quickly that he wasn't. Studying in Garlemald, he quickly came to realise that his parents opinions of him were not shared by others. Even after he had properly joined the military. He was nothing. He was just another Doman conscript not worth a second glance. Skill didn’t matter next to his blood. It seemed that his parents had actually believed that he would climb quickly through the ranks - believing whatever they had been told when he was but a child. They never told him that they were disappointed. But he knew it. And he did try, so hard, to be that perfect son he had always been. In joining the military properly, Asahi was sponsored by Vita mal Brutus, a doctor and the sole member of House Brutus. He took his name and dedicated himself completely to Garlemald. During Doma's fight for their independence, Asahi saw clearly what Domans thought of him. They had no qualms attempting to kill him, with utter hatred for him - even if he'd never had a choice in who he fought for. They almost succeeded in killing him; he was saved by Zenos yae Galvus and quickly became infatuated with him.
Verse | Main Stormblood, includes anything up until Asahi's death.
Verse | Survival While his wounds were not quite fatal, they would put him out of commission for quite a while. Things carry out the same as canon - with Asahi so severely injured, Maxima steps in to lead the rest of the mission and salvage the prisoner exchange. They intend to take Asahi back to Galemald with them but when they’re shot down, they realise they won’t be allowed back in the Empire. The realisation hits Asahi hard. Still incredibly weak, he had little choice but to follow the Shadowhunter. As soon as they reach civilisation, he separates from the rest of them. With the realisation that he can’t go home, he slowly returns to Yanxia. While Fandaniel does not have a body to take, he still recreates Asahi’s visage to steal his identity and ruin the Populares more completely. Asahi hates him.
#✧—— It just seems unlikely that it’s me who was to blame. IC ✧ ( The Infatuated )#✧—— The most dangerous thing is to love. MUSING ✧ ( The Infatuated )#✧—— If love is anything tangible. Learning that they redubbed some of Asahi’s ENG lines in 4.3 to be more unhinged (like Fandaniel) is making me feel some kind of way. Not really sure it’s a good feeling. While I get that they were probably trying to match the feeling of the animations better—and I do admit that there was a dissonance of seeing those animations with that quiet voice during patch day—I’m not sure I’m okay with it.
A lot of Asahi’s (English) characterization is about how in control he is even when he’s motivated as something as violent as revenge, and those lines really worked to make him feel even more unsettling. And it makes me really, really concerned that they’re not going to make Asahi and Fandaniel’s characters different at all, and instead rely on Asahi being unhinged to arrive at Fandaniel’s introduction. Like—a large part of why Fandaniel was effective during the patches was because his scant mannerisms were so much more exaggerated than (most of) Asahi’s, and he really did kind of feel different, at least to me.
I feel like the redubbing opens up this slippery slope of not having a clearly defined character line between the two, and just instead merging them together so that way they’re one continuous whole. Which like… Fandaniel is an Ascian possessing a corpse, with serious problems regarding the memory of Amaurot and his status as a pseudo unsundered. That’s not at all how Asahi’s character is motivated by an obsessive love over an unattainable Prince, while assimilating into Garlean culture and becoming entrenched in it. They’re two very, very, very different people, with different motivations and wants, and I’m concerned that this is just eroding the differences between the two.
I can separate them, but I have, at multiple points, rp’d both of these characters for various reasons. I like to think that I have a fairly good grasp on what drives them both, and have done a lot of thinking on them. The average casual player likely has not done the same, and… I dunno. It’s not that I’m like “everyone has to read the text correctly”, but eroding distinctions like this makes me wary.
Like, sure, Asahi’s face was chosen to elicit a reaction from the player base, I know that. The devs know that he’s an extremely polarizing character, and they used that to garner emotional investment. Love him or hate him, it’ll get people talking about the new character. I’m not really sure I’m alright with that choice either, but it is what it is.
Who knows, maybe I’ll end up being surprised by EW ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#asahi sas brutus#Fandaniel#English localization#patch 4.3#Good god if they try and say that Asahi was always Fandaniel I’m going to pitch a fit#That’s just a dumb character decision and would completely rewrite the narrative around the Naeuri siblings

@virtuti replied : //I assume you had her surname before Asahi even existed but now im curious if youd thought about linking them in any way
way before ! naeuri is in the name generator, that’s where I got it from. I assumed SE would not take a name from their own generator . then again, raen / doman surname rules are different than what most people understand surnames at :
Surnames occupy a special position in Eastern culture—an honor afforded only to aristocrats, warlords, and the samurai class. Many are derived from the names of weapons or military ranks, as symbols of their martial prowess, with examples including "Buhen" ("fight valiantly in battle"), "Yatsurugi" ("eight blades"), and "Obinata" ("blades on waist"). Though not officially recognized, many members of the subordinate classes sport self-bestowed epithets which are often—but not always—derived from their profession or place of origin. For example, a merchant may take on the name "Naeuri" ("seedling seller") and a farmer or hunter may use "Torioi" ("bird chaser") as a surname.
which fits, while her father was also a farmer & hunter, he first made his living as a merchant so I think naeuri is just the name that stuck with them when they came to eorzea. I assume it may be similar with yotsu & asahi, their family simply being merchants ? tldr, i never planned on connecting them tbh but I was really startled when the name drop happened.

even i had faith;
Title: 僕だって信念があった (even i had faith in something once) Characters: Asahi sas Brutus, Zenos yae Galvus, Maxima quo Priscus Tags: Asahi sas Brutus/Zenos yae Galvus, Canon Divergence, Canon-Typical Violence, Consensual Sex, Crossdressing, Forced Prostitution, Implied Childhood Sexual Abuse, Implied/Referenced Incest, Implied/Referenced Rape, Physical Abuse, Prostitution, Role Reversal, Strangulation, Suicide Word Count: 7,892 Summary: Written in sixteen hours; "Yotsuyu and Asahi role reversal" AU. In times of hardship, Asahi thinks of the sun.
He thinks about running away, of course. Anyone would. But the trouble with running is that everyone in his village knows him, and would return him to the Naeuri home if he were found. His legs are not strong enough to carry him to the next settlement over; at best, he might collapse three-fourths of the way there. He might be spotted by Garlean soldiers and shot on sight as a possible rebel operative. He might die, in other words, and the thing about his parents is that for all their cruelty throughout all his years, they have never planned to kill him.
That's the only reason he can think up to stay — but the truth might simply be that he is a coward, and he doesn't have the courage to run.
This is a little darker than many of my other fics, so please check tags and make sure you won't be triggered by anything that happens here! Otherwise, I hope someone enjoys it! You can read the story on Archive of our Own.

Hello! I am Yotsuyu goe Brutus/Yotsuyu Naeuri from Final Fantasy XIV. In my canon I survived after being shot by Asahi thanks to the WoL so I had a life after that in the Doman Enclave. I eventually got romantically involved with Yugiri and had problems to control Tsukuyomi. All the story before that is the same as seen in the game. I'm looking for basically anyone even if not part of my canon! I'm also fine with doubles and am over 18. Like this post if interested so I can reach you out!

prompt 17: obeisant
[ ffxivwrite2019 : moonlit / moonshadowed ] [ previous prompts ]
Lunya has never been the type to bow.
She’ll use titles, certainly. She defers to the Sultana as Her Grace and addresses the prince of Doma as Lord, as expected of the Warrior of Light and representative of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. But she does not bow, nor does she curtsy. She does not lower her head for those whose birth affords them more rights than others. Some complain - but the ones that don’t are the ones she can actually trust.
There is no point in having power or money if you are not willing to protect and to serve. She’s watched children her age starve to death in the shadows of Ul’dah’s walls, and she’s seen desperation drive good men to lengths they can’t return from, all while the elite preen in their jewelled chambers and turn a blind eye. She knows just how fortunate she is to have never felt the full brunt of such a life, and she moves with the strength of those who protected her so she can repay their kindness.
For many, no saviors like her own ever come.
Yotsuyu burns like a dying star as the words spill from her - first hateful, then maniacal - and Lunya starts to understand. Her desperation, her anger, her hatred. She still knows nothing of Doma’s kami, but she knows that they have abandoned this woman. Her heart moves; but so does Yotsuyu, and as Hien cleaves the bullet she shoots at him, Lunya remembers that this is someone with everything and nothing left to lose.
“Enough!” A snarl rips from Lunya’s throat as she steps forward and twists the pistol from her, and it’s with a shriek of agony that Yotsuyu’s wrist breaks in her small hand. Yugiri and Gosetsu say nothing, though Hien makes a small noise of surprise.
She understands. She really, truly does. But this can’t continue.
“I will remember your words,” Hien tells the fallen viceroy as she collapses to the floor, and Lunya silently holds him to it while the roof crumbles above them.
- - -
“The Witch of Doma will soon be dead.”
Yotsuyu says it like a secret, from one friend to another, and perhaps that’s what they could have been had they met in a different life. Her hair - whiter than the moon and the stars, just like Lunya’s own - spills across the floor of the Castrum, dotted red with her brother’s blood.
“Tsuyu deserved a kinder fate,” Lunya says quietly, and she means it.
The fallen viceroy sighs gently as she smiles for the first time in her life, not as Naeuri no Yotsuyu or Yotsuyu goe Brutus or Tsuyu, but just Yotsuyu - the woman she should have been if someone had taught her she could make the choice. In her waning moments, she thinks of Gosetsu.
Lunya bows her head and asks the kami, whatever and whoever they may be, to grant her peace if they would do nothing else.

When the light finally fades from Asahi’s wretched eyes and Gosetsu collapses over Yotsuyu’s lifeless body, Lunya thinks of Kichirou and little Yeyema and the night the moon came falling down, and she turns away.
