A take I've seen from a fanfic (of pop greens and tangerines. by ココダ - coco (arurun)) over the "Wounds on the back are a swordsman's greatest shame" line was that while the line does mean what it says on the tin -- it is shameful for a swordsman to retreat from a proper duel -- it is also about Mihawk. It's shameful for a swordsman to leave wounds on the back. I personally very much like that thought, and want to hear your thoughts on it.

I could see a someone feeling that way during an official duel, but it’s kind of hard to avoid in any big battle setting, and I would peg it more as a personal code of conduct like Luffy choosing not to kill his enemies then a general rule swordsmen everywhere would agree upon. Hell, Mihawk chased Krieg from the Grand Line to the East Blue because he was bored. He certainly killed a bunch of dudes who were trying to run away, and had Zoro failed to impress him I’m sure he would have killed him, too, regardless of whether Zoro turned his back or not. I don’t think that makes Mihawk any less of a swordsman. In One Piece the weak don’t get to chose how they die; if you think wounds on the back are a source of shame, then it’s your job not to get stabbed in the back.

Hello!! I've read "Deconstructed" over five times at this point, it's so good and wonderful and angsty and I love it so so much!! Do you perhaps,, have any Usopp fics you can recommend 👀

Firstly, thank you so so much, you're too kind!! And YES yes I do thank you so much for asking. These are just the few that I keep in my bookmarks, but I promise that when I have more time I'll return to this post and look for a few more!! (Warning: a few of these are Usopp ship fics. While I don't particularly have any OP ships, these fics do a great job of painting Usopp as something beautiful and precious in the eyes of someone who loves him dearly, so I still love reading them.)

Be Brave Usopp by DrizzlyMango. This one has one of my fav AU Usopp tropes (blind Usopp!) and is just such a great homage to his character. It is, however, Usopp/Sanji, so beware if you don't like ship fics! I still think it's a great Usopp fic though :)

salvage by hongmunmu. Usopp and Franky bonding. My entire heart belongs here.

'Til You Feel It All Around You by Tonko. Focus on Usopp, Zoro, and Robin when they get age-reversed. You can tell the author really, really loves Usopp and Sanji. Same.

Fever, Fever, Go Away by KazimaKuwabara. Usopp is sick/poisoned and it is very, very angsty. Still a WIP but only 1 chapter to go!

A retelling of canon with blind Usopp and amputee Nami going back in time to relive their adventures with the Strawhats. SO much angst, badass Usopp & Nami, and tons of humor! Just as good as canon, I stg. WIP, and veeeeery long.

The Coward's Redemption by Brucenorris007. Similar to above, but canon Usopp goes back in time and decides to be braver for his crew. Needless to say, he's a badass. WIP!

I caught wind of your costume-making skills from Tsukasa-chan.

I heard that during Kiryuin-sensei's stage, you sewed up her costume when it got torn. I'm stoked to see it in action!

It felt like I woke up from my sorry state, and realized… That, of course, I love the stage soooo much!

Yachiyo: That's… headbutting?

Aruru: Aaaaaaaaaaaaanyway! Yachiyo-chan, why did you hold back!?

Aruru: During your acting earlier, the ad-lib! I figured it out. You were gonna say something that wasn't in the script!

Yachiyo: I wasn't trying toー... I mean, perhaps Arurun is mistaken?

Aruru: No I wasn't! I felt it, y'know. A new wind was about to blow from you!

So why, then? Why did you hold back, Yachiyo-chan?

Yachiyo: ...At the time...I thought Arurun's ad-libs would be most effective if not interrupted.

Aruru: Huh...?

Yachiyo: It was a fantastic lineーOne that shows off the brightness, energy, and will of the Moon.

It's an interesting look into a new side of the Moon, which'll surely inspire the script team's creativity. That's why... I didn't wish to interfere with that charm.

Aruru: To interfere with... If your ad-libs were added to the script, the charm of the Fool would've shone brighter!

Yachiyo: That'll make for a messy impression.

Aruru: You won't know if you won't try!

Yachiyo: No, I know. Because... I can see it. Where the play comes, where it goesー

Aruru: Ver— Vertigo?[5]

Yachiyo: Where it comes, where it goes. Where we once were and where we're headed.

Aruru: So that's what you can see...?

Yachiyo: At the time, the center of the stage was Arurun's Moon. Therefore, unnecessary ad-libs are out of the question. That is the role the Fool was required to play.

That's why it went without a hitch~. Amemiya-san, the scriptwriter, was inspired by Arurun's acting, correct?

Aruru: Yachiyo-chan... You really knew that much?

Yachiyo: Because nothing unnecessary occured, it went as expected. I'm very happy with the outcome.

Anyhow... I've finished sewing~. Everyone's waiting, so let's head back.

Aruru: ...I'm not done.

Yachiyo: Huh?

Aruru: Amazing... You're amazing, Yachiyo-chan! I can't believe you can see the vertigo on stage!

Yachiyo: Verti... Where it comes, where it goes, yes.

Aruru: That's the one! I'm too preoccupied with the stage in front of me, but you can see how it'll start and how it'll end...

You're too good! Especially for a first year student...

The stage would've been more exciting if you ad-libbed! The Fool and the Moon could've been explored deeper! And yet…!

It's out of character, it's unsightly, clashing on stage... is just not me.

Plus, there's Akira-senpai, Michiru-senpai... Maya-san, Kuro-san, Tamao-san and Shizuha-san giving their all on stage... First years should play the role of first years.

Aruru: No, that… Our year level doesn't matter!

Just because we're first year students doesn't mean we can't be... we can't... no!

Yachiyo: What's the matter, Arurun? Your rehearsal clothes just got fixed...

Aruru: It's such a waste! There's an infinite array of possibilities right in front of you, and you just give up on them!

Aruru (Moon): "Why can't you just say what you think and feel? Let me hear the words nestled in your heart!"

Yachiyo: ...! Don't be like that, Arurun~. You can't do an etude in a place like this...

Aruru (Moon): "Where are you going? What is it that you wish to be?"

Aruru (Moon): "Here, only the two of us are on stageーLet me lend an ear, Fool, to what you have to say."

Yachiyo: …! Damn it...!

Yachiyo (Fool): "I know. My journey will lead me nowhere. There is nothing at the end of this journey."

Yachiyo (Fool): "I know. That is all I have to say… Moon."

Aruru (Moon): "Why…? Who in the world are you, Fool?"

Yachiyo (Fool): "Who in the world... is what I demand to know about you, Moon."

Aruru (Moon): "Huh?"

Yachiyo (Fool): "It was absolutely unexpected... for someone like you to appear before me once more like this."

"I've observed many stories on my great journey, you see. People meeting, their joy, love, sorrow... and farewells."

"You were once surrounded by many friends, overflowing with love. Faith, Charity, Hope, Judgement... Those beloved friends were like sisters to you, yes?"

"But the last time I saw you all, you had devolved into a bunch of barbarians. Fighting, clashing with each other... You looked like a shaking animal."

"You, who had shone ever so softly had fallen oh-so-deeply into darkness. A lunar eclipse. On the surface of the stage, one could see an incomprehensible crack."

"The Moon had problems nobody else could possibly solve, and so ditched the stage out of pain... Am I wrong?"

Aruru (Moon): "...!"

Yachiyo (Fool): "Once one leaves the stage, they can never come back. That is the truth I've learned on this great journey."

"But... That's exactly what you did. You defied all expectations and leaped onto the throne of the Empress. It was the first time... anything of the damn sort had ever happened."

"It was absolutely unexpected... So, why in Hell did you come back, Moon?"

Aruru (Moon): "...If I tell you my secrets, will you tell me yours, too?"

"Why you see it, the way the stage comes and goes? Why you give up on the infinite array of possibilities in front of you? ...Will you kindly tell me?"

Yachiyo (Fool): "...Sure. Whatever. It's a promise. Tell me, then. What happened to you."

Aruru (Moon): "...Nothing."

Yachiyo (Fool): "What."

Aruru (Moon): "I had nothing... No light, water, air, life... on the Moon."

"That's why… I tried shining a light on myself. I hid the empty desert of the desolate moon, and played the role of a cheerful girl... because I wanted to see everyone else smile."

"But... The desert inside me will never fade away. It'll always be there."

"And then… Everyone came back to tell me something. Something that woke me up."

"Never give up on yourself... Believe that there is always a better way, and never give up hope until the day of Judgement arrives."

Yachiyo (Fool): "Faith, Charity, Hope, Judgement..."[7]

Aruru (Moon): "Don't smile for anyone's sake but your own. For you to smile on stageー"

"To have light, water, air, life… You must find them on your own. You are the lead of your own stage."

"The answer to your journey surely lies at the future... is what the Starー"

"What my daughter told me."

Yachiyo (Fool): "The… Star!? Your... Your daughter!?"

"How preposterous... The Star shouldn't be in this story... that role hasn't been cast in this stupid play!"[8]

Aruru (Moon): "The girl in the library, all the while weaving a great story with such small eyes... grew up and came to see me. On the stage, transcending time..."

Yachiyo (Fool): "The girl in the library grew up, and...?"

"...Impossible!"

Aruru (Moon): "Indeed... The girl in the audience will go up on stage, having basked in our brilliance. ーOur daughter of the future."

"Her existence is proof... that I am someone. Someone worthwhile. That there is meaning to being on stage here and now."

Yachiyo (Fool): "That's why your sorry self came crawling back... to the stage."

"... No way... No way, no way, there's no fucking way. How absolutely unexpected."[9]

"In this play, there wasn't supposed to be any characters other than Faith, Charity, Hope, and Judgement!"

Aruru (Moon): "Heh heh. You believe me?"

Yachiyo (Fool): "Seems like I have to, seeing your stupid smile. But who in Hell could've expected this? This damn play, this damn stage!"

Aruru (Moon): "You can be anything you want to be on stage. Any miracle can happen on stage..."

"Now come on, you promised. Tell me everything. About yourself... and your secret."

"What in the world do you see? How can you see where it comes, where it goes?"

Yachiyo (Fool): "...This world is a stage...Even the king is a player."

"I've seen it. The ending of every play. I've played them. Every role of every story."

Aruru (Moon): "Huh...?"

Yachiyo (Fool): "...I was born to a bard and a playwright, and have been surrounded by plays and stories ever since I was a child."

Arcana number 0, depicting a traveling youth. It is said the story of the tarot cards' tells of his journey, with this one meaning the beginning of everything.

Its upright position means "change", "future", and "possibility"... Its reverse position means "recklessness", "unamenability", and "easily entranced"[15].

..."Stage-crazy". Once upon a time, a King called me that.

The King performed, and showed me a play... written in ancient times.

It's been performed countless times before, but... The stage the King and Chancellor performed exceeded my imagination, even as I myself have read it endlessly.

What exceeded my imaginationーwas the brilliance of the leading role.

...Perhaps the brilliance I was bombarded with today was the same one I witnessed that day.

You can be anything you want to be on stage. Any miracle can happen on stage...

"Quo vadis" is a Latin phrase meaning "Where are you going?", primarily attributed to the apocryphal Acts of Peter. Here is the passage:

"Where are you going" is, if you recall, the question the Moon asks the Fool in chapter one.

For the sake of readability, I've dropped the many times Aruru says "Yachiyo-chan" if "you" was good enough to substitute it, but I've kept Yachiyo's "Arurun"s to give her a more distant feeling.

The concept of the 主役 (shuyaku) plays a big part in this story, and depending on the flow of the sentence it would be either "lead" or "leading role". I think "protagonist" is also a good choice, but I dropped it to emphasize how rooted in theatrical concepts Yachiyo's ideaology is.

Yachiyo and Aruru repeat eachothers' words many times, and I've gotten tired of noting when it happens (except for one case). But I've tried to keep the parallels in mind when translating.

UPDATE: Hi guys! So... voiced lines are here. And it really makes a difference. I've appended a lot in regards to the tone of the story, specifically the Fool's tone. Keep in mind that there's no 1-to-1 equivalent of profanities in English and Japanese, and so in the original there's no "real" swear words. It's the only way I can really convey just how furious the Fool/Yachiyo was. Thanks for reading now that Fool's intermission is officially out!

The background data is the student council room, but considering the next few lines (there not being a student council at all yet for the year this section takes place) I doubt that's really where they are.

成長期 (seichouki) = literally "growth period" 反抗期 (hankouki) = literally "rebellious period" This is apparently a reference to what Misora says in Glittering Children.

Aruru doesn't know what Yachiyo is saying lmfao. The original is こしあん (koshian) which is from 来し方 (koshikata) = "where _ comes". She's mistaking Yachiyo's words for this. It gives you an image of how profound Yachiyo sounds, I guess. I tried localizing it here.

You might remember this from her Dying King chapter. It's important!

Believe = 信じて Faith = 信仰 Better = より善き Charity = 慈善 I've switched the sentence order for readability, but to be clear: In the original JP, より善き comes first before 信じて, and Yachiyo recites the order as Charity, Faith, Hope, Judgement. Hope and Judgement use the same word as their Arcana.

I can't gauge the exact tone (because I can't access voicelines), but I believe the Fool is speaking in amused disbelief here. UPDATE: voicelines happened. He was not. He was pissed.

I did some localization stuff here. Originally, the Fool repeats まったく. He's not actually swearing, but it's the best way to convey how mad he is. :P

Rinmeiki, Captain Twins, Elysion Chapter of the Kings.

Götterdämmerung. The title is a literal translation of Ragnarök, the apocalyptic "end" times of Norse myth. As such, the word götterdämmerung is used to denote world-altering destruction (of an organization, of a place, etc.), but since Yachiyo is listing off plays here, she's probably referencing the opera and linking it to Elysion.

The word she uses is 型紙 (katagami), referring to, specifically, sewing patterns. Nice move, storytailor.

Yes she modified the Charity, Faith, Hope, Judgement line.

What's your favorite kind of KHR fanfictions ?

Hmm, that's actually a great question. KHR is a bit of a different beast for me than most other fandoms, because I'm really picky with khr fic these days and have a low tolerance for stuff that seems off to me. But! I do have some general favorites that definitely apply to KHR fic.

I really do adore time travel AU/dimension travel/that parallel universe gimmick, that's a personal favorite that spans across fandoms, not just KHR fic though. I like the idea of twin fic, but the execution is so iffy here that I don't touch most of it. I love fantasy AUs, and I'm a big fan of crossovers between khr and bnha! They're generally pretty fun, though I have gotten pickier as the volume of them has increased.

I think I've mentioned these here before? I cant quite remember though so I'm not really sure. I have a lot of trouble finding fic because I love gen fic and long fic, so it's hard to find fanfic that qualifies!
