Seeing all of the great Vanathi x Arulmozhivarman content on here has been making me think back to the scene in the books where we learn of Vanathi’s deepest wish since childhood to someday have a son so that way she can see her father reborn again and have him back in her life to love and care for.

And then I wonder if this is wish is one she would ever tell Arulmozhivarman, the man that she (believed) she was so hopelessly and deeply in love with to the point that she had reconciled to never having that wish fulfilled.

But there would be something lovely about him knowing and rejoicing with her at the birth of their son for this special reason. And knowing that Vanathi does not live to see Arulmozhivarman on the throne (and so fulfills her promise to never be queen) in Kalki’s epilogue, it would be a comforting thought to have this story be one he shares with their son and perhaps their son having the same dream to have a daughter so he can see his mother again and his father, the woman most beloved to his heart.

Context: Two warring dynasties of Indian History, specifically Tamizh history, Chozha and Pandya, feature here. Pandya assassins want to capture the Chozha Prince, who swims to their ship in the middle of a storm as they had captured one of his friends. All of this happens in the middle of a storm that is a prelude to what could be a tsunami. Poonkuzhali is a young boatwoman with a crush on the Chozha Prince Arulmozhivarman who accompanied him on her boat to lead him to the ship which captured his friend. (This fic is closer to film than book canon)

The Pandya projectiles burst into flame on the stricken ship Poonkuzhali paddles furiously towards it, hoping and praying that the Prince survives unscathed.

Vandiyathevan’s voice cuts through the wind, insistent in its urgency. “Ilavarase!” Poonkuzhali dares to look towards them, beyond. the clashing waves. Both men are clinging to what used to be the mast of the proud Chozha vessel, now ravaged with fire and storm, splintering into pieces.

Ilavarsar Arulmozhivarman’s hands nearly slip, at risk of breaking the precarious hold he had on the wood. Poonkuzhali averts her eyes from the sight, unable to bear the thought of him losing the fight.

Arulmozhi holds on tight to Vandiyathevan’s hand, the other man doing the same with his as the deluge of water swallows them. Both of them try striking out at the water, but, fast losing strength with the shivers setting in, for the moment at the very least, Arulmozhi can fight no more.

The Pallava sailors, watching the sight, can only think of one ending to the incident. News spreads like fire of the Kingdom’s beloved young Prince, the apple of their eye, being lost forever, and a nation mourns.

In the depths of the sea, the mute woman, now old and worn, strongly holds the child of her heart close, paddling strongly, aided by his friend. Worry arises in her for the ceaseless shivering the child has, wondering where to turn for aid, when she spies the beacon of hope.

Poonkuzhali’s face splits into a wide grin when she spots the familiar visage of her athai, Vandiyathevan paddling wearily behind. Looking more closely at athai, her smile widen as she rushes forth eagerly. Her Prince. His chest moves in the glorious gasps of heavy breaths. Real, tangible and alive.

An interesting scene from ps2 and some casual history reading made me notice this

+ bonus tidbit!

The major conflict in ponniyin selvan is the succession crisis- 2 heirs with equally strong claims.

However, it isn't an isolated incident. The madhuranthakan-adithya karikalan-arulmozhivarman musical chairs with the Chola throne is a direct- if delayed- fallout from a previous, more shocking crisis.

In this scene, Vanthiyadevan and Alwarkaddiyan Nambi are pursuing Pandyan Assassins through the crowd, before they attack Prince Arunmozhi.

They manage to catch hold of few, who give them tantalizing clues.

And if that's not enough - even point out the source of attack!

Pretty dumb move, right?

Leaking your plan to the enemy before it's been executed?

Some context will clear it up- he's not leaking their plan.

He's gloating.

Reminding them of their past downfall to shame them.

The eldest son of Parantaka I, crown prince Rajaditya died in 949 in circumstances equally if not more dramatic than his grandnephew aditha Karikalan.

In the Battle of Thakkolam, rajaditya was seated atop an elephant when an arrow from the Rashtrakuta forces killed him on spot. This must've certainly killed morale in the Chola camp leading to their defeat. Rajaditya's commander, a chera nobleman called Vellan kumaran survived and became an ascetic 'chaturanana pandita'.

Rashtrakutas also occupied Thanjavur for a short period due to this, leading to internal instability. Parantaka I lived a fairly long life and died 6 years after his firstborn son. He was first succeeded by Gandaraditha (2nd son) and then by Arinjaya (3rd son) - both of whom must've been in their 50/60s leading to short tenures. Son no.4 Uttamasili was beheaded by Veera Pandyan.

After son no.2 the primogeniture (succession based on birth order) doesn't matter as everyone wants a chance.

The age reversal among the sons of these 2 emperors causes more confusion- Sundara(Arinjaya's son) is older than Gandaraditha's son.

Bonus tidbit :

in this YT video, author of the controversial 'sangathara' novel, kalachakram narasimhan answers a question saying that while Nandini herself is fictional, representing the chola-pandya dynamics, the character maybe inspired by nandipurathu Valli, a noblewoman and daughter of commander vellan kumaran, who apparently was in love in Prince Rajaditya.

Curious, I read the novel, but that's for another day😌🌚

Context: Arulmozhi’s reaction to Poonkuzhali and Sendhan Amudhan telling the monks that he is Prince Arulmozhivarman.

This fell on the Prnce’s ears. “No, respected teacher, no. I’m not a prince or anything. This woman and this boy are trying to make a fool of me together. I am a boatman. Sometime ago, looking at this girl, “Lady, will you marry me? Both of us can board a boat and go to far away countries.” asked I. She said many incomprehensible things. Apparently I am born to rule the world under one banner! A poor girl from a family of boatmen cannot marry me, it seems. It is enough fro her if I am fine. In the future, she is apparently going to rejoice after hearing about my victories. How does the story sound? In truth, am I delusional, or is she?”

Arulmozhi, for all that I love you as a character, you really are delusional here. I think, here, Poonkuzhali implicitly acknowledges that not only can she not marry Arulmozhi, but also that someone else will. Of course, that is my interpretation, since, well, Kings in their times must marry.

Vanathi's mind reeled woth the several whispers she had heard behind her back. Varini, Niravathi, Tharika, Sendhiru, everyone of Kundhavai Pirattiyar's handmaidens whispered ill about her behind her back.

"I agree with Niravathi! That snake managed to take Ilavarasar and Ilaiya Piratti's attention."

"If Ilaiya Piratti intends to marry this foolish Vanathi to Ponniyin Selvare, I will poison and kill her!"

She closed her eyes as tears escaped them when she reminisced how venomously Varini has said all those words.

"Its all because of you, you foolish girl! Had you not dropped the Valakku Pattu the Prince would have been alive and safe. You are a misfortune, an ill omen!! Why don't you die!?"

Niravathi's hateful words when Ponniyin Selvar's news of drowning reached to Pazhayarai rang inside her ears. Clasping her palms around her ears, she shut her eyes tightly, she cried out.

"Niravathi is probably right. It was my fault that I panicked and dropped the Pattu." Shr cried out.

Currently, Vanathi was at Anaimamgalam of Nagaipattinam. She has came with Ilaiya Piratti Kundhavai and has sacrificed her sleep by serving an ill Arulmozhi Varman day and night. She didn't let him have even a slight discomfort and cared for him, while crying in despair when he was again in the clutches of deep slumber. Those moments when he woke up were happiest moments, and every second when he was asleep felt like Yugas.

"Vanarkula Ilavarasan," Vandiyadevan, who was talking with Poonguzhali and Amudhan turned around to look at Vanathi who stood there with a slightly puffed face and red nose, and immediately concluded she was crying.

"Yes, Ammani? What brings you here?" Vandiyadevan asked while Poonguzhali humphed silently. Vanathi noticed this and looked at Vandiyadevan.

"Do you know where Akka is?"

"Ilaiyapiratti?" Vandiyadevan was confused as to why Vanathi is asking him, when she was basically her shadow. "I saw her going inside her guest Chambers with Ilavarasar, Ilavarasi. Weren't you with her?" He asked.

"No, I was at the back, at Nandhi Mandapam." She said and turned around, walking away.

"Vandiyadeva, what do you think happened to Ilavarasi?" Senthan asked, a bit concerned for her.

Before Vandiyadevan could reply, Poonguzhali said, "What would happen Amudha! She must be thinking about Ponniyin Selvan." She said with a scrunched face and rolled her eyes. Vanathi heard her hateful voice too and ran towards the river that joined Samudhra Rajan ahead. Sitting on the banks she started weeping heavily.

"Mahadeva! Why, pray tell me, why did you wrote heights of misfortune in my Kundali? What was my fault? Why did my Father sacrificed his life in Eezham War when I was born and attained Veera gathi? Why my Mother had to leave me all alone in this world? Why did I casted my misfortune upon Ponniyin Selvar that he suffered from delirious fever?"

Vanathi cried out all of her frustrations as her eyes fell upon the flowing water beneath. Wiping her tears harshly, she stood up with hardened eyes. God knows what roamed in her mind as she walked towards the river and slowly stepped inside, going ahead.

"Amudha, what are you looking at?" Poonguzhali asked when she saw Senthan's blown wide eyes. "Ilavarasi Vanathi! She's drowning!!" Senthan cried making Poonguzhali whip her head towards river. "I must go and tell Ilaiyapiratti and Ilavarasar." Senthan turned to go but Poonguzhali stopped him.

"Why does that matter to you?" She asked him casually making him look at her in disbelief.

"Don't let your jealousy make you a murderer Poonguzhali." Senthan's hard voice took her by surprise as he ran upstairs and immediately was met with Vandiyadevan, Kundhavai and Arulmozhivarman.

"Ilaiyapiratti! Ilavarasae! Ilavarasi Vanathi– she's drowning!"

Before Kundhavai and Vandiyadevan could react, Arulmozhivarman barelled outside and not even acknowledge Poonguzhali, as he ran ahead and dove into the water.

I went to watch Ponniyin Selvan 2 yesterday and it was fantastic. I haven't watched Ponniyin Selvan 1 yet 🙃 so i am looking forward to watch it as well.

The screen play, characters, music were amazing. The beautiful landscape of the southern part of India will mesmerize you. The actors did an amazing job. 👏 Especially Vikram ( he played Aditya Karikalan) and Aishwarya Rai ( she played Nandini).

I only have one problem with it, that is, it felt too short. I wanted more!!!

I looked up the characters before going to the theater.

Vallavaraiyan Vandiyathevan -

Main character; we are following the story from his perspective.

Nandhini -

Main antagonist of the story. She is interesting. A beauty with brains 😉

Azhwarkadiyan Nambi ( alias Thirumalaiappan ) -

He is a spy and Vallavaraiyan Vandiyathevan 's friend.

Kundhavai -

The Chola princess, King Sundara Chola's daughter.

Arulmozhivarman/ Ponniyin Selvan -

Youngest son of Sundara Chola. He is the titular protagonist.

Aditya Karikalan -

Eldest son of Sundara Chola.

Vaanathi -

Princess of Kodumbalur.

But, yeah, I'm upset. I don't think this disappointment is good for my poor heart. Y'all were so excited about it and got me excited about it and now I can't watch it. 😣

Context: Periya Pazhuvettarayar speaking to Sundara Chozhar when the former wants his sons with him.

Once the Emperor had given his consent, the Finance Minister proclaimed “Let us create a royal proclamation accusing the Prince of conspiring for the throne of Lanka and command his arrest as well as return. Such a command cannot be forbidden by Boothi Vikramakesari. Besides, if the command reaches the Prince somehow, he will definitely come for certes!”

Hearing this, Sundara Chozhar laughed. An unconventional line of thought for certain, however, why should we not try our hand at it once? The Emperor’s mind was brimming with the desire to see Ponniyin Selvan. He felt that his last days were nearing him. Hence, he wished to discuss his worries concerning the Kingdom with his younger son who he secretly held close to his heart. If (he) knew of his desire to cede the throne of Thanjavur to Madhurantakan, Arulmozhivarman would obey it without a word of dissent. Following that, it would be easier to change Aditha Karikalan’s mind through him.

Thinking thus, the Emperor gave his consent to the Finance Minister’s plan. In its (the plan’s) name was the command to imprison Arulmozhivarmar was sent. A firm command to the captain of the ships was also issued that there must be no harm to the Prince’s person.

I remember reading somewhere in either this chapter or the next that Pazhuvettarayar’s men were told to bring the Prince with them by force if needed, however. Should I assume that this was what the old man had commanded in front of the King and then secretly issued the other command, or is there any other explanation as well?

In another vein of thought, is it safe to assume that Arulmozhi is closer to his father than his elder brother is? And/or that Arulmozhi is closer to Aditha than Kundavai is? (If that is so, is the movie theory of Aditha still being bitter with Kundavai over what happened to Nandini something that might hold credence?)

Brihadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur, also known as Tanjore, Situated near the banks of Kaveri, dominates the then capital of the Cholas, Tanjavur.
