The Paintings of Mladen Ilic

I have been looking at the abstract oil paintings of Mladen Ilic for some time. I admire them because they are unusual creations that make me wonder. They pull me in and compel me to look beyond their immediate visual impact. 

Mladen’s ethereal compositions are beautiful in their painterly style and delicate, subtle tinges of colours. They exist quietly, passionately, like poetry waiting to be explored and meaning understood. When I look, I feel the emotional depth and truth in Mladen’s works. Although many of the subjects are concerned with the serious side of struggle in human existence, there is a purity and sweetness in the artist’s expression. I think that each creation emanates a very personal but universal message. I like to contemplate these paintings in a quiet environment. 

The subjects of Mladen’s works draw me to ask questions about things unknown to me. I go to a place where I can stop my normal day of multi-tasking. Here I can consider and explore deeper meaning - even about my own existence! Time and mind space are precious, scarce elements in the normal cacophony of our fast, ‘in your face’ visual world. Taking time to look at and think about these paintings takes me to another dimension. I enjoy that enormously - it’s huge!

At first I did not find the paintings easy to understand. They were a bit inaccessible, I thought. I needed more time to look and think. I was curious about their meaning. Then I read what Mladen the artist wrote to explain his work. He wrote about an idea evolving to become a subject and composition in a spontaneous, unplanned manner. He wrote about allowing his emotions to rule as he works. He wrote about feelings and imagination rather than reality. 

Some of the titles of Mladen’s creations that are particularly compelling for me are: Core, Oblivion, Angel, Spirit, Ocean and Alchemist. The artist’s own words describing these amazing paintings have helped me understand his intended meaning. When I was considering Mladen’s paintings, I found it very important to read and absorb his desciptions about his work, ideas and working manner.
