A TikTok home-décor trend has irked some bibliophiles.

When it comes to aesthetic trends, social media loves a catchy name.

Cottagecore. Dark academia. Eclectic grandpa.

Now there’s a new entry to the canon: bookshelf wealth.

On TikTok and other digital platforms, there has lately been much ado about people who own a great number of books and — this is critical — have managed to stage them in a pleasing manner.

If you’ve ever seen a Nancy Meyers movie, the look might ring a bell. Warm and welcoming. Polished, but not stuffy. A bronze lamp here. A vintage vase there (with fresh-cut flowers, of course). Perhaps there is a cozy seating area near the floor-to-ceiling display, with an overstuffed couch topped with tasteful throw pillows.

Kailee Blalock, an interior designer in San Diego, posted a video to TikTok last month that sought to define bookshelf wealth and school viewers in achieving the aesthetic in their own homes.

“These aren’t display books,” Ms. Blalock, 26, cautions in the video, which has been viewed over 1.3 million times. “These are books that have actually been curated and read.”

This literary look, she went on to say, goes well with pictures hung willy-nilly on the walls, sometimes even partly blocking the shelves, as well as mismatched fabric patterns and a bit of clutter.

In an interview, Ms. Blalock expanded on her advice. “I think to really achieve the look and the lifestyle, someone has to be an avid reader and has to appreciate the act of collecting things, especially art and sculpture,” she said.

Though Ms. Blalock did not originate the term “bookshelf wealth,” her video has spurred plenty of online discussion. “The day I ‘cultivate’ books instead of buying what I like to read is the day I’ll know I’ve truly failed as a human,” one user commented. Others remarked how bookshelf wealth was less about reading and more about regular old wealth.

Breana Newton, a legal coordinator in Princeton, N.J., who posts regularly about books on TikTok, was one of the people who responded to Ms. Blalock’s video. “I am going to show you bookshelf wealth,” Ms. Newton, 33, says in a video of her own. “Ready?”

She then gives viewers a brief tour of her home, showing books everywhere — on shelves, in overflow piles here and there, and strewed across the bed. Absent is the sense that the rooms have been staged, or that the books were bought with the consideration of how they would look on Instagram.

In an interview, Ms. Newton said that she worried trends like bookshelf wealth encourage overconsumption. This year, she added, she is trying not to buy any new books.

Another critic of the trend, Keila Tirado-Leist, said in a reaction video: “Who does it benefit to constantly have to name and qualify and attach wealth to any kind of style or home-décor aesthetic?”

Ms. Tirado-Leist, a lifestyle content creator in Madison, Wis., likened bookshelf wealth to “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth,” styles that have recently made social media waves.

Still, she was understanding that what drives a home-décor trend like this one is a desire to create a home that feels, well, homey. In another video, she described the idea of layering — that is, slowly acquiring pieces and building up to a finished look, rather than trying to buy a bunch of things all at once in an effort to chase a trend.

“Styling a home takes time,” Ms. Tirado-Leist said.

Another TikTok user put it more bluntly in a response to Ms. Blalock’s video: “Bookshelf wealth does not mean you have books. It means you have built-ins.”

Love is in full bloom for Blake Shelton and his wife, Gwen Stefani who just announced that they have a new love-filled duet coming this Friday, February 9.

Taking to social media on Monday (Feb. 5), the couple revealed that the romantic tune titled “Purple Irises” will be released just in time for Valentine’s Day. Their recent joint post included the cover photo which boasts a retro theme as Stefani and Shelton both sport all-denim looks while looking giddy in the brightly colored living room setting. The country star appears to be plucking his guitar while his other half admires him from the bright yellow striped couch. The background décor features hanging wall art of purple irises to match the name of the song. 

Stefani Shares A Teaser of The New Tune

Fans got to hear a sneak peek of the mid-tempo tune through a several clips posted to Stefani’s TikTok account. The pair are seen in the studio, and building out a string of effortless harmonies while celebrating how strong their love is for one another.

“If someone comes along and tries to love you like I love you/ Don’t know what I’d do/ Don’t want to lose you/ If someone comes along and tries to take you, tries to make you/ Don’t let them change your mind/ Wonder why you took a risk/ On a broken heart you cannot fix/ No I never knew a love like this/ Now we’re picking purple irises,” Stefani and Shelton sing on the chorus. 

In her caption, she simply wrote “… now we’re picking purple irises 🪻,” while in the comment section added, “we love u guys so excited to share w u 💜💜💜💜💜 gx.”

The pop star was not included in the 2024 panel of coaches, however, fans will have the chance to see her on the stage of several festival this year including Cali Vibes, Coachella, Lovers & Friends and more. Plus, in January, she teased plans to reunite with her former bandmates of the rock band, No Doubt, for an upcoming show. Stefani has yet to share when or where this performance will take

As for Shelton, he’s gearing up to embark on his highly anticipated Back To The Honky Tonk Tour. The 17-date trek launches on February 22 in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and will run through March 29 in Wichita, Kansas. The upcoming tour is the follow-up to his 2023 run of the same name.

This year, Shelton will be joined on the tour by Dustin Lynch and Emily Ann Roberts.

Shelton To Return To Oklahoma For Hometown Show

Following the final date of the tour, the Oklahoma native will return to his home state on Saturday, March 30 for a supersized concert to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and its education programs.

Shelton will bring his live show to the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the star-studded All for the Hall concert. Joining the Grand Ole Opry member will be Country Music Hall of Fame member Ronnie Dunn, Tony and Emmy Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth, ACM and CMA nominee Wade Hayes and fan-favorite songwriters/performers The Swon Brothers. Additional artists will be added to the lineup in the coming weeks.   

All proceeds from the show will go to the nonprofit museum’s education initiatives, which directly served more than 230,000 people through in-person and virtual programs in 2023.

HALLOW-LEE-N movie review Oct 9th : Dr Terror's House of Horrors

Another anthology film, starring our favorite recurring name in this series, Peter Cushing. Five tales of horrible demise, and an ending worthy of a dark fairy tale.

Six men in a train compartment, one of them is Dr Schreck, specialist of metaphysics and the occult. He suggests reading tarot cards for the other travellers, which they all agree to even though the art critics Marsh (Lee) insists on being a virulent skeptic and overall killjoy.

The first man gets told a tale of a werewolf going on a killing rampage, and of being killed by the werewolf's wife. A bit weird that the werewolf is named Cosmo and is apparently immortal, but this story was fun and I loved the décor. The fifth card, the one supposed to sow him how he could change this fate, shows him death.

The second man is faced with a tale of a killer plant invading his home, like Audrey II but without the singing. He too gets told he can only avoid this fate with death.

The third man get told all about how he will interrupt and disrespect a voodoo ceremony, and reap deadly consequences for it. This one felt kind of cringe in the this-definitely-uses-stereotypes-of-a-religion-as-a-prop way. Not cool. And the main character of this short story was definitely unsympathetic and arrogant. The music was great though. His fifth card is also death.

The fourth man is the rude and snobby art critic Marsh, who handles being ridiculed by an artist he hates by running over the man with his car. This causes the artist (played by Michael Gough, Arthur Holmwood in the Dracula movie) to lose his hand and later kill himself. The hand comes back to haunt Marsh. He, too, can only escape his eventual fate via death.

The last story is a vampire story, but a lot less goofy than last movie's. It does involve a terrible French accent though. His fifth card is, predictably, also death.

Not telling you what happens at the end but you've probably guessed it.

This was a very enjoyable movie, the transitions between the various locations only to be brought back into the confines of a train compartment at night made for a very disorienting ambience in the best way. The score was beautiful.

Of course, the writers in 1965 couldn't predict how funny it would be for a 2024 audience to hear Christopher Lee call "Doctor Shrek!" in a distressed voice.

Oh yeah, on that note, I noticed the man himself spoke in a higher register than the classic Christopher Lee voice, but that's understandable: 1965 was still fairly early in his career, he hadn't developed that voice yet.

This one goes on my list of cozy spooky movies to watch with a hot cup of something sweet when October comes around. 8.5/10.

Contemporary silverware designer Karina Gill will be exhibiting a selection of jewellery and silverware, created using her distinctive style.

Karina studied at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham where she gained her BA (Hons) in 3-Dimensional Design in metal work. Since completing her degree in 1996, Karina has built up a business from her workshop in Dorset, where she designs and makes her etched silver bowls, jewellery, boxes, and sculptural pieces.

Drawing inspiration from the delicate cutting and folding of a single sheet of silver, Karina infuses her work with the rich textures of fabric prints, the rugged allure of coastlines and delights in nature’s diverse patterns and organic repetition. Her pieces evoke a sense of complexity without complication, a harmonious balance of skilful artistry and thoughtful design.
