BEACHES IN RIO

There are refreshment stands all along the beach and promenade, where you can buy cold beverages or fresh coconuts.

There's even a McDonald's right on the beach. Big Mac and a caipirinha, anyone?

Ipanema is busy all day and night. Sunset is actually one of the best times to go.

Surfing is also huge here. One of the best surf spots in Rio is Arpoador, a small peninsula between Ipanema and Copacabana.

Copacabana is another one of the most famous beaches in the world.

The iconic 2.5 -mile beach is surrounded by mountains and high-rise apartment buildings and hotels.

Naturally, this beach gets very crowded.

During Carnaval, Copacabana turns into an epic beach party at night.

Thousands of people take to the beach, with music, dancing, and caipirinhas.

One of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Rio, Leblon feels more exclusive than nearby Ipanema, and the beach is quieter and more relaxed.

Praia Vermelha, Rio's smallest beach, has a more local, intimate feel.

Prainha beach is another small, somewhat secluded beach, on Rio's west side.
