harvard // it was silly, ridiculous to think that you could be a harvard man. but it was what was expected of you - to attend your father’s alma mater, to get a degree in chemistry. but school was never easy for you, and while the classes you take aren’t hard, you can’t help but dig yourself so far into a hole that there’s no way out. you drop out at the end of junior year, just one year shy of graduation. looking back, you can boil it all down to self-sabotage. 

isla // everyone says that she should have been the first child, and honestly, you can’t help but agree. she’s two years younger than you but she’s always had her shit together, has always known where she was going in life and how she was getting there. she exudes what you’d expect from the oldest sibling while you’ve always flown by the seat of your pants. no one ever believes it when you say that you’re the older sibling. 

january // there’s new england blood running through your veins, a fact you can’t deny. there’s something peaceful about the cold of winter; when it reaches it’s peak right at the end of january, your favorite month. the city bustles along as usual, but there’s a quieter quality about it that you can’t quite put your finger on. 

kayaking // it’s one of the few things you love about summer, when the city is sticky and hat and ridiculously overpacked with tourists. the charles is actually nice when you’re on the water when in comparison to when you’re on the esplanade. it’s quieter, too, especially if you go in the morning before the sailing academy starts it’s lessons for all those privileged children of beacon hill. 

loan // you’re well versed in the world of loans - you’ve got a mountain of them from those unfinished years at harvard. but this is different. this loan, a business loan, could make or break you depending on what the bank says. there’s a fledgling, fragile dream you’ve concocted of owning a brewery and it’s the only thing you’ve ever felt so sure of over the course of your entire life (save for maybe one other thing, a girl named olivia, but that’s nothing more than a pipe dream at this point). when the bank gets back to you and agrees to the loan, it’s the only time you’ve ever cried tears of relief. 

massachusetts avenue // the location couldn’t be better - a refurbished building on mass ave in central square. it’s technically not in boston, like you’d originally wanted, but the rent is cheap and the space is good. central square is up and coming, anyway, bustling with hip college students and young professionals. it’s the perfect place for a brewery. 

newton, massachusetts // it’s a nice town, you can admit now that you’re older. you can’t really complain about the life you had growing up there because it was a good childhood. it was every suburban cliche you can think of, but it was your parents dream. and while you don’t necessarily share that dream with them - the white picket fence one - it really wasn’t such a bad place to grow up. 

olivia // she may be the only girl you’ve ever really loved. she was the big one, the epic love of your life. you’ll never admit it out loud, but it’s not like you have to. anyone close enough to you knows the damage that was done when she left for stanford and you stubbornly refused to follow her. there’s been an aching in your heart ever since. 

patriots // you aren’t as big of a patriots fan as you are a fan of the red sox, but there’s no denying that your blood runs navy and red. you are a walking, talking new england cliche, but there is nothing quite like shotgunning beers to stay warm in the parking lot of the stadium in foxboro.

quincy market // it’s the only part of the city that you truly detest and avoid as much as possible. it’s too touristy, too filled with people walking slow and doing what’s expected of them while visiting boston. the only time you ever go is in the dead of winter, when the big christmas tree is all lit up and beautiful in the middle of the marketplace. 

red sox // you’ve been going to games since you were too little to remember. there’s a familiarity about fenway; the green monster, the cold beer in flimsy plastic cups. you were there when they broke the curse in 2004 and won the world series, and while you don’t get to go to as many games as you’d like anymore, there’s a calender hung on the fridge of your apartment with the season schedule.

xfinity center // it’s a hike to get to mansfield from boston but when you’re young and carefree you don’t mind. you’ve seen dozens of concerts at the ampitheatre, and were there in 2003 when pearl jam played the longest set they’ve ever done. there’s memories tucked away in the back of your mind of piling into cars with all your friends and olivia and making the trek down.

KEY WEST PART OF U.S.S. MAINE HISTORY

Key West has always had a connection of some sort or another with Cuba.

The two islands are neighbors. A mere 90 miles apart. Many Cubans immigrated to work in Key West cigar factories which made cigars from Cuban leaves. Key West has always been supportive of the Cuban people’s desire for freedom. Many Key West residents today are of Cuban descent.

The first battleship of the U.S. was the U.S.S. Maine. On this day in 1898, the Maine exploded in Havana harbor. Two hundred sixty crewmen were killed.

The cause of the explosion at first was unknown. A U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry sat in session at the Custom House in Key West and took testimony regarding the possible cause of the explosion.

The Custom House construction had only recently been completed. The Custom House conducted and owned by the U.S. government at the time. Today privately owned by the Key West Art and Historical Society.

The Court of Inquiry determined the Maine had been blown up by a mine. However, the Court did not attribute blame to any nation or purpose.

Cuba was owned by Spain at the time. Public sentiment rapidly grew against Spain. Vengeance was called for.

It did not take long for war. The Spanish-American War began in April 1898. Within 3 months, the U.S. had decidedly defeated the Spanish.

In August 1898, an Armistice was signed officially ending the War.

The cause of the Maine explosion was always questionable. In 1976, a team of American naval investigators concluded the explosion was caused by a fire that ignited ammunition which was upon the Maine. Neither a mine nor sabotage was involved. A war had been fought in 1898 for no legitimate reason.

Greed was the motivating factor.

William Randolph Hearst blamed Spain for the explosion. He had no facts to suppport his theory. His purpose was solely to sell newspapers. He claimed Spain responsible for that reason.

It was the first time “yellow journalism” reared its ugly head in the U.S. Other newspapers took up the Hearst position also. “Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain” became the cry.

Two hundred sixty crewmen were killed in the Maine explosion. Some of the injured were treated in Havana hospitals. Others, in Key West hospitals.

Most of the dead wee buried in Arlington National Cemetery. However 19 who had been treated in Key West and died, were buried in the Key West Cemetery. A grand stone sits by their graves. A statue of a U.S. sailor holding an oar stands upon the stone.

The grave site is visited by many tourists. Additionally each year, a ceremony is held on February 15 acknowledging and honoring the war dead. The military is always involved. Many Key Westers are part of those paying homage.

Key West has never forgotten.

Sonali Kolhatkar on 2/8/21 wrote an article in Counterpunch as to a means to solve inequality. The title: It’s Easy To Fix Inequality: Tax The Rich.

Makes sense. Doubt it will ever occur in the extreme.

The cry for such is greater today that ever before. Elizabeth Warren has been a major force since her election to the Senate in 2016. Bernie Sanders has always been a proponent of such. Now add to the two the progressives that have in recent years been elected to Congress.

Biden sees the handwriting on the wall.  He has begin leaning more to the left. Understandable. The desire to abolish inequality is almost a religious one. Biden also understands progressives helped him get elected.

Were you aware: Elite news outlets are working overtime to try to block families from getting the $2,000 survival as they were promised. The beltway media is manufacturing consent for the position.

Convoluted economic theories are coming from every corner that the $2,000 is not healthy for the country. The theories being expounded by certain economists and the affluent rich.

Other than pure greed, I cannot understand why any group already well healed would push to deprive those less fortunate of a few extra dollars.

I find this interesting. Actually shocking. Recall Graham and John McCain were best of friends for years. McCain dies and suddenly Graham is on Trump’s bandwagon.

DAY 20…..Greece the First Time

Yesterday was one terrific day!

I went to a great beach during the day and an extremely good restaurant in the evening.

The beach Super Paradise Beach.

My day began with the drive to the beach in a rented car. An experience.

Mykonos is hills. Up and down. The beach about 15 miles of driving to reach. The usual narrow roads, accidents waiting to happen, sharp curves, etc. The last mile of the drive was the worst and strangest I have ever experienced.

The last mile…..the phrase itself is the connotation I seek to convey. The last mile is straight down. With a couple of tiny curves. When I say straight down I mean that. It was like the first drop on a large roller coaster. I thought the back end was going to flip over forward. And the car and I in a serious accident. The car was not made for such a steep decline. The car’s center of gravity would not have been able to handle it.

I was concerned. With God as my co-pilot however, I made it to the bottom.

The trip was worth it. In front of me a beautiful parking lot and huge building. Super Paradise!

As I was turning the car off, I noticed the gas tank was on empty. I suddenly realized I had never put gas in the car. When I received it, it had half a tank. It was gone! When I ran out going back up the hill, and I would run out, the car would slide back down or whatever.

I had no recollection of having seen a gas station in my 15 mile drive. In fact, I had no recollection of ever having seen a gas station in Mykonos.

The solution was simple. I was on vacation. A rented vehicle out of gas was not my concern. It was the rental company’s. I left Super Paradise Beach several hours later by cab. When I got to my room, I telephoned the owner. A small rental company. The car was due back today.

I expanded the problem to him. Told him I did not want to run around getting a gallon of gas, going back to the car, etc. I acknowledge it was my fault. What could we do?

A gentleman. He said you have to return the car with the same amount of gas as when you took it. I said I knew. If it is empty, you owe me half of a tank. A tank full is 60 euros. I will charge you 25 euros. A good deal! I expected get screwed on the pick up and return portion, however. He explained he had to get gasoline, have someone drive him to the car, and then he had to drive it back. Time and people. It was coming. I could sense it. At least 50 euros more. That will cost you an additional 10 euros, he said.

A deal.

That is how the car problem was resolved.

You have to see Super Paradise Beach. Super it is!

I have never seen anything to compare to it.

A large semi circular beach. Clean sand. Clear water. 280 chairs. 140 beach umbrellas. Great lounging chairs. Like lying on a mattress.

A bar. Huge. Egg shaped. One of the biggest I have ever seen. Open air. A large dining area to the left. Outside. A food concession area. Self service. All kinds of great food. Provided in the automat fashion of old. Lift the glass door and take out what you like. To the right of the bar on a high podium of sorts, the DJ. All under a concretion roof.

Amazing! A money maker without question! Super Paradise goes till 4 in the morning.

We need a place like this in Key West. I have it all figured out. Don Manaher of Don’s Place to run it. He has the genius. Take the quiet end of Smathers Beach. Close it off. Build a similar but smaller facility. Clothing optional. A gold mine!

An example of gold mine is the $15 per two chairs charged for the lounges. Do the math. A gold mine in itself. Of course, the place is not full every day.

I finally found a topless beach. About 75 per cent of the women. All ages. Coupled with thong bottoms. A fantasy come true.

My search for total nudity also satisfied. Though I am not certain satisfied is the correct description.

A young mother was with her two children. A girl about 3 and a boy about 1. Both naked. A pervert I am not. However, that is the closest I have come to total nudity on this trip.

I tell you about this mother and her children for a special reason. Follow me.

I happened to look out into the water. There was Mom standing waist deep. One breast exposed. Junior enjoying his lunch.

Later, I happened to turn over on my lounge. Who was on the lounge directly behind me? Mom and the two kids. Junior was still eating. Mom decided the meal was over. She took her fingers and gently removed her nipple from his mouth. He was not finished. He would have none of stopping. With one set of fingers, he grabbed onto the nipple and shoved it back in his mouth. And chomped away till he was done. Junior was calling the shots in this regard. Not his mother.

A couple of months ago I reported on my internet show of a breast feeding lawsuit recently resolved. The situation gigging rise to the lawsuit occurred somewhere in the northeast. Perhaps Vermont or New Hampshire. A young mom was seated on a regional jet waiting for take off. Her child was hungry. She was breast feeding the child. The attendant said you will have to stop…..some of the other passengers might be offended. The woman refused and she and baby were removed from the plane.

This happened in 2008. The mother sued. The case recently settled. The settlement included a written apology from the regional carrier. A written apology also from the CEO of the big airline. And an undisclosed amount of money. The CEO said in his letter of apology that his airline was breast feeding friendly and that all mothers should be so aware. Come breast feed your child on one of our planes any time!

As it should be.

I played tourist. Enjoyed a couple of pina coladas while lying in the shade of the straw umbrella over my lounge. Later in the day, I was hungry. Tried out the food place described earlier. The food a winner!

I had grape leaves stuffed with rice and big white beans. The big white beans a separate dish.

I have gotten into grape leaves on this trip big time. The beans looked good in their glass cage. Big ones. Covered in an appealing red sauce. So I went for the beans also!

The beans a winner! Tender. It was the sauce however that made them so good. A red sauce with a lot of oil mixed in. Crushed basil leaves and I do not know what else thrown in. The sauce was so good that after I finished, I took bread and wiped the dish clean.

I left before 5. The partying starts at 5. Someday perhaps.

Several people told me to eat at Nikos. A Greek restaurant. Old. It is tiny and in the midst of the big ones on the Chora waterfront. I tried Nikos last night. Superb!

Hairy Canary 1939 Willys Pickup Fought the Gasser Wars Along the U.S.-Canada Border

Quick: When you hear the word gasser, what’s the first word that comes to mind? We bet a popular answer is Willys, more specifically the company’s models assembled during the 1930s and early 1940s. Indeed, they have been a big hit with drag racers as far back as the late 1950s, a choice we’ll get into in a bit.

One such vintage racing Willys, the Hairy Canary, belongs to Cloverdale, British Columbia, resident Dave Love. Canada has been a hotbed of hot rodding activities for decades, fueled in part by the advent of HOT ROD magazine and other publications. Speed shops appeared around the country as well, with the B.C. province being particularly active. Cal-Van in Vancouver, for instance, opened in 1952, though one of the business partners had already begun importing high-performance parts into Canada under that name in the 1940s. Incidentally, merchandise often passed custom inspections as “marine equipment” to avoid taxation.

Dave Love did a great job fully refurbishing this genuine ’39 Willys gasser, notorious in Canada (its place of origin) as well as across the border where it also raced. Unlike its 1960s iteration, the Hairy Canary gets occasionally driven on the street, although the mechanical fuel injection makes it finicky at times.

In the new millennium the scene remains strong in B.C., with a core group having a deep appreciation for American and Canadian hot rod history in particular. Dave, one of these protagonists, took a liking to hopped-up jalopies at age 10, thanks to a pile of old hot rod and custom car magazines offered to him by a friend of his father’s. Later on, his interest led to the construction of a 1928 Ford roadster, which graced the pages of Deluxe a few years ago (“The Border Roadster,” Nov. 2016).

In 1999, Dave unearthed the remains of the Hairy Canary Willys, a 1939 pickup extensively raced in B.C. and across the border. It had originally been built by Bert Straiton of Abbotsford, B.C., in the early 1960s, shortly after competitors realized the advantage of using Willys automobiles. In fact, he specifically looked for a 1937 to 1942 Model 37 (the company renamed it Americar for 1941-1942), eventually settling on a ’39 hauler.

The Hairy Canary typically competed in B/Gas or C/Gas, two of the quickest classes in NHRA’s mega-popular Gas program. Note the chromed steel wheels, a more affordable option than the magnesium and aluminum rims of the era.

But why this sudden fascination with the Willys? To understand, you need to turn back the clock to the late 1950s, when drag racers first began tweaking these cars. Part of the allure lay in their weight, with the 1933-1936 Model 77 tipping the scale at 2,060 pounds, lighter than a three-window 1932 Ford by about 300 pounds. In his book Gasser Wars, author Larry Davis lists the weight of the larger 1939 Model 37 at 2,180 pounds, quite an advantage over the models offered by the Big Three in the late 1950s, which varied between 2,450 and 2,800 pounds.

The short wheelbase of the Willys also appealed to car builders of the era, especially when you consider the marginally sticky drag tires available at the time. In other words, the prewar Fords and Chevys with longer wheelbases simply couldn’t get the horsepower to the ground. Numbers speak volumes: 100 inches for the Model 77 (106 for the ’32 Ford, for instance); between 100 and 102 for the ’39 Model 37 (112 for the ’39 Ford).

Bert Straiton rightfully considered his dragstrip contender to be nice enough to enter shows in the Pacific Northwest. Here it is looking its best in Canada’s 1967 Vancouver Expo. Since this is a full-on drag car (unlike today’s street/strip version), the engine bay lacks a radiator. In its place resides a spun Moon tank.

The consensus was that Willys models also offered better weight transfer to the rear axle than other automobiles, thanks to the Model 77 and 37’s higher center of gravity. All these reasons made them prime material for drag action, especially since they remained inexpensive. Hot rodders had little interest in them, judging Fords and Chevys more appealing. Racers such as K.S. Pittman (’41 Model 37), George Montgomery (’33 Model 77), together with Glen Ward and Carl Taylor (’34 Model 77), led the pack in the late 1950s; but many others followed. A few more chose lightweight/short-wheelbase alternatives, too, including the Ford Anglia.

Canada embraced drag racing in the 1950s as well, and Bert Straiton was one of the young enthusiasts who joined the mayhem with his nose-high Hairy Canary. Built in 1962, it proved quite competitive in the B/Gas and C/Gas classes, running in the low-11-second bracket. He often raced at local B.C. tracks, including Abbotsford Airport in his hometown and Mission Raceway, opened in 1965 and still active today. With Abbotsford located a few miles away from the border, Straiton also regularly ventured to the U.S., competing at several Washington State tracks, namely Seattle, Bremerton, and Arlington.

When found two decades ago, the ’39 Willys was missing a handful of key components, hence Dave had to search for the two-piece fiberglass front end, along with the box. He shortened the latter 8 inches.

Motivation came courtesy of a high-compression Chevy 301ci small-block happily revving to 9,000 rpm. It featured common gasser attributes, from the Enderle stack injection to the Vertex magneto and Hooker fenderwell headers. The ’39 Willys chassis and factory I-beam with stock drum brakes remained in place, but Bert re-arched the front leaf springs to raise the nose. Ponies traveled through a BorgWarner T10 transmission to a ’55 Chevy rear with 6.37 gears and stock brakes. Interior amenities were kept to a minimum, with modified chrome-legged kitchen chairs welded to the floor.

The Hairy Canary remained active until 1968. Straiton continued competing with other cars, though he considers his yellow Willys “the hairiest gasser I’ve ever raced.”

Some enthusiasts remember the truck for its nice finish, hence Straiton occasionally entered car shows. Incidentally, he lost the fiberglass hood when it flew off the vehicle and into a river as he was trailering the car over a bridge on his way home from one of these events.

In Dave’s well-equipped garage, the Willys keeps company with his 1928 Model A roadster, which we profiled in the Nov. 2016 issue (“The Border Roadster”). It is really a neat piece, featuring a selection of 1940s attributes, such as a Hallock windscreen and a Stromberg-fed ’47 flathead V8.

Few folks showed any interest in these dragstrip relics when Dave Love found the Canary in the backyard of an old hot rodder two decades ago. It looked rather forlorn; only the cab and doors remained of the body, though the frame was still fitted with the Willys front axle and parallel leaves, and a 1957 Oldsmobile rearend.

Dave eagerly searched for additional info on the truck’s history, with little success. It had not been raced since the late 1960s. One piece of the puzzle pertains to the 1980s, when it sat in a B.C. muffler shop for years. He explains, “The guys in the shop would apparently roll it outside during the day to work on customer cars and drink beer after work, telling stories about how fast they were going to run it at the track. I can only assume it was all ‘drunk talk’ and nothing actually ever happened.”

The mean-looking, streamlined headlights with heart-shaped lenses make this truck recognizable as a 1939 model. A year later, Willys adopted more traditional lights, somewhat akin to 1940 Fords (although the latter had more pronounced chrome rings).

With the truck’s gasser heritage in mind, Dave went on a hunt for missing pieces, including the V8, transmission, rear box and fenders, and two-piece fiberglass nose. He then added ’39 Willys coupe taillights and an 8-gallon Moon fuel tank. He also built and ran a 283ci V8 with Hilborn injection for five years, followed by a nasty, aluminum-headed 400-inch motor, which he blew up.

It now relies on a 327ci Chevy, bored to 336ci and assembled by Bud Bennett at Kerrisdale Speed in B.C. It is equipped with GM 462-style fuel-injection heads and set for a compression ratio of 10.7:1. The appearance is consistent with the 1960s gasser era, with S&S 1 3/4-inch fenderwell headers (hooked to Flowmaster mufflers) and the aforementioned Hilborn injection fed by a Hilborn PG150 pump.

The metal and fiberglass currently wear a few coats of PPG DP70 epoxy primer, along with door logos reminiscent of the period lettering. However, Dave still intends to repaint the vehicle using Canary Yellow lacquer to mimic the 1960s finish.

Comp Cams supplied the solid camshaft, springs, lifters, and rocker arms. Add TRW pistons, a Weber flywheel, a Centerforce clutch, a Melling oil pump, and a Donovan gear drive, and you end up with a reliable powerplant that delivers 418 hp. Dave finished the restoration with a ’65 Corvair steering setup, four Competition Engineering shocks, and ’67 GM disc brakes in front, plus a 4.10 ’57 Olds rear complete with drums. Finally, a Hurst shifter hooks to a ’71 Super T10 gearbox.

This combination allows Dave to occasionally drive the hauler on B.C.’s highways, unlike Bert Straiton’s track-only version. In fact, Dave even cruised to our photo shoot location a few miles away from this gasser’s place of inception. We bet Straiton certainly did not expect such a feat when he began turning wrenches on his tired Willys truck 57 years ago.

Five-spoke magnesium American Racing rims became a drag racer favorite as soon as they appeared on the market in 1963. The ’39 pickup runs such genuine Torq-Thrust models, measuring 15×4 and 15×8.5. Tires are 5.60-15 Firestones and 30×12.5-15 Mickey Thompson ET Street slicks.

The Willys was missing its tailgate when purchased in 1999. Unbelievably, Dave stumbled upon it by accident in 2015—in a restaurant. “I spotted the original piece on the wall of a 1950s diner in Abbotsford [British Columbia]. The owner wouldn’t sell or trade it, but she allowed me to photograph it, and then I had a local sign shop reproduce the artwork as a decal for the truck’s tailgate.”

With mechanical fuel injection, Joe Hunt magneto, and Cal Custom valve covers, the 327 Chevy (bored to 336 ci) retains an appearance consistent with gassers that raced more than a half-century ago. Hidden from view is a vintage Cal Custom oil pan.

A Hilborn fuel injection setup currently tops the SBC, though Dave recently managed to locate the Enderle unit (bought new by Bert Straiton) that equipped the Willys in the 1960s! It still requires a bit of restoration, including the petrified rubber fuel lines, but it should soon find its way under the fiberglass hood.

When built by Straiton in the 1960s, the cabin housed a pair of cut-down kitchen chairs, chosen for their feather-light weight. They are long gone, hence Dave went searching for a compact alternative. He stumbled on 1966 Austin Mini seats, which offer a decent level of comfort.

The vintage Superior 500 three-spoke steering wheel looks right at home in the cockpit. You can also make out the custom-mounted Moon throttle pedal further down, another era-correct drag racing accessory.

Check out the beautiful 1939 gauge cluster. It has a hint of Art Deco styling while supplying the driver with more info than most other cars of the time (oil pressure, fuel level, amp, temperature). Dave added the Stewart-Warner oil pressure and water temp gauges below.

The bed houses a Moon fuel tank, in addition to a heavy Caterpillar D2 battery closer to the tailgate. No, it isn’t hooked up, but its weight helps keep the rear slicks glued to the track whilst helping weight transfer, a trick adopted by many drag racers since the 1950s.
