it’s, time
im getting older. and that’s a very fucking uncomfortable feeling. well, comfortably uncomfortable. 
i look back at the things 16, 19, 20 year old me felt... and i feel warmth noticing the growth. i gave up pursuing classes that i absolutely despised. i let go of the feeling that you need to be suffering in order to succeed. i was forced to. i think a worldwide pandemic can have that effect. like if i didn’t have my sanity and peace i’d have absolutely fucking nothing (well, my health too).
speaking of, the year 2021 brought me some interesting health concerns that i’ve never really thought of prior. i’ve always been a bit of a hypochondriac. writing helped me cope with panic attacks. but i never expected to get actually real symptoms-- joint pain, namely. it started with a wrist, to a shoulder, a knee, a hip, an ankle. fuck writing that down just sounds like a lot. i’m still in pain quite often actually, in fact i’m going to physical therapy this week. i probably spent more time in the hospital in 2021 than i had in like the six years previous. it sucks, but i’ve learned some valuable lessons. 
the first one essentially being that the doctors isn’t all that bad. yes, it’s okay to admit you were traumatized by your pediatrician because they told you to eat lettuce with a squeeze of lemon juice for a meal. but that’s not everyone. you can step on the scale now too and it’s no longer a trigger! i’m proud of u. but why the fuck did we need to get weighed in school when everyone knows good and well that kids get bullied on the basis of weight. i can’t blame myself. but, i digress. 
i also learned the valuable lesson that health is wealth. and truly if we do not have our health we do not have fucking anything. i went to the gym, well, i go to the gym in the present. i learned that exercise isn’t just something you should do in the months leading up to an event, or a vacation, but a fucking entire lifestyle like truly. it’s on the everyday to-do list like taking the orgasmic morning piss. 
i made smarter financial decisions, too. albeit, far from perfect (i blame aritzia clothes), but much better than previous habits. i even saved enough to take myself somewhere i’ve always dreamt of ~~europe~~. and i’m going... alone. which is slightly terrifying but holy shit i can’t believe i’m finally going and forcing myself out of my comfort zone. 
which leads to yet another epiphanic point (if it’s not a word, it should be)-- i realized i had major codependency and trust issues --> with my literal fucking self, by the way. i realized i did shit to make others, or societal norms happy. i did this in absolutely every facet in my life. and thanks to consuming too many edibles at a fogo de chao, i finally realized this and it really hit me in the most awful, uncomfortable way. but at least something good came.
back to my solo european vacation, i realized i have some deep (or more surface level at times) rooted trauma when it comes to the way i trust myself, or don’t rather. i’ve proven myself to be capable of doing various things, but within i do not have the confidence to trust myself doing shit. straight up. i’m still working on that, and 2022 is a year i hope to truly put trust in myself. i’m literally forcing myself too. i bought an airline ticket that was intentionally non-refundable so i wouldn’t bail out and try to cancel the trip when a family member (grandpa, sorry, but stop talking) advises me to not go. too fucking late.

Hi everyone! Hope your week has been going well so far. I just got home from a quick 2 day work trip to Ottawa, and finally had some time to finish editing this travel diary from last month now that I’m back home. We spent 2 days in Montreal exploring the city, before driving over to Mont Tremblant for 2 days to ski.
I’ve been to Montreal more times than I can count now (my last visit was in 2016 for Osheaga), but I still love the city. There’s always so much to do and see, along with great food, entertainment, and shopping. Keep reading for my thoughts on some of the highlights of the city, along with some tips if you’re planning to ski in Tremblant! Prepare yourself, it's a long one.
We stayed in downtown Montreal, and our hotel was right off of Rue Sainte-Catherine, one of the main streets in downtown for shopping and restaurants. This is a great area to stay if you don’t plan to rent a car, and want to be able to walk and take the Metro around the city. It is a little bit on the touristy side, and can get crowded in the summers, but I do still love this area for its convenience.
We did rent a car this time, but I actually prefer using transit or Ubers to get around downtown Montreal. Driving is extremely difficult if you’re not familiar with the city, since all the road signs are in French and the downtown core has so many one-way streets. Finding parking is also a huge pain. If it’s your first visit to Montreal, I’d recommend getting around using the Metro.

Having done most of the touristy things in Montreal already, we didn’t spend too much time exploring in the 2 days that we were there. It also snowed so much during our visit that it kind of put a damper on most of the things that we did want to do. However, we did visit the World Trade Centre in the Financial District on our first day.
This is a beautiful building, but the star of the show was the fountain located just past the entrance. It’s absolutely stunning with all the lights and the buildings casting reflections into the water. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a good spot for photos.

No visit to Montreal is complete without a trip to Chinatown, and this is by far my favourite place in the city to eat. I’ve yet to go to a restaurant here that I haven’t liked (and trust me, there are so many restaurants in this area). The food here is also extremely affordable, and you get your money’s worth in terms of portion size. We ate at a few different spots here (see below) and loved all of them.

One of my favourite things about travelling is always the food, and there was no shortage of great restaurants on this trip.
Pho Bac in Chinatown - Because it was so cold on our first night in Montreal, all of us were craving something warm. Pho was our immediate thought, and we found Pho Bac through Yelp. I’ve eaten my fair share of amazing pho in Toronto (and trust me it’s damn good), so I had pretty low expectations for this place. I take back every word though, because this spot was just as good, if not better, than any pho I’ve had in Toronto. Their broth was really unique in that it was flavourful, but also had a hint of sweetness. I would 100% go back.
Juliette & Chocolat - I have such a sweet tooth, and I always have to try at least one dessert place when I travel. Juliette & Chocolat is quite a well-known spot in Montreal, and they have several locations. Along with ice cream, they also have a menu full of decadent desserts and drinks. I got a milkshake fully loaded with whipped cream, strawberries, and a chocolate waffle to top it off. Amazing.
Qing Hua - It just so happened to be Chinese New Year the week we were in Montreal, and since I wasn’t home to eat my mom’s dumplings we had to find the next best thing. Qing Hua in Chinatown had the best reviews, and they didn’t disappoint. They have so many options on the menu (including lots of vegetarian options!), and you can choose to have your dumplings steamed or pan fried. I got the tofu and shrimp, and both were amazing. It’s also extremely affordable. I got all the dumplings in the photo above for $11. 
Pizza & Cie - We cooked for quite a few meals while we were staying in Tremblant, but we did go out for dinner a few times as well. Our first stop was to Pizza & Cie in the town. I wasn’t a huge fan of this place (it was really just okay), but it was convenient and quick.
Beaver Tails - If you’ve never had a Beaver Tail before, it’s a Canadian gem (and also quite possibly one of the most unhealthy desserts of all time). They deep fry dough, top it off with a spread like Nutella or caramel, and add toppings like chocolate or bananas. So bad for you, but so good. I only used to get these when I was on vacation with my parents as a kid, so now they’ve kind of become a vacation treat for me.
Dinner in Tremblant - I can’t for the life of me remember the name of this restaurant, but it was another spot that we had dinner at in the village at Tremblant. It was a Mexican place that again, was just okay. The portions were very generous though, but the food wasn’t anything special. If there’s one tip I can give you about food in Tremblant, it’s to buy groceries and make your own. Restaurants are so expensive (and not that great from my experience), so why not save the money and make the food yourself?

Our last stop in Montreal before leaving for the mountains was to Mount Royal. This is a great lookout point if you want to be able to see a view of the entire city, and it’s especially pretty in the summer. Of course it was snowing when we went (go figure), so we didn’t get to see much.

On my last ski trip to Mont Tremblant, we actually flew straight into the city with Porter. This time, since we also wanted to stay in Montreal for a few days, we decided to drive. The drive from Montreal to Tremblant is relatively quick at about an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic. It’s quite the scenic drive as well, so it passed by quickly.
We decided to stay at an AirBnb/condo this time instead of a hotel, and without a doubt I liked it so much more than a hotel. Our little condo was minutes away from the lifts, so we could basically ski-in/out of the resort. It was also quite possibly the cutest AirBnB I’ve ever stayed at. The interior looked like a cabin, with an old-fashioned metal fireplace, wood floors, and even a wooden ladder that leads up to a loft area with a bed and view of the ski lift.
I was absolutely obsessed, and now I’m dreaming about owning a vacation home in the mountains that looks just like it. One of these days...

As for skiing, the conditions this time around weren’t as good as last year when we went around the same time. Quebec didn’t get as much snow this year, so the snow that was on the hills was hard and extremely icy. On the plus side, the weather was beautiful, and we had sunshine and clear skies for both days that we were up on the mountain.

Having skied at Tremblant twice now, I wanted to share a few tips if you’re planning to go next season:
Buy your lift tickets in advance. This pretty much goes for all resorts, but Tremblant typically has some great sales if you buy 4-6 months before the season starts.
Go as early as possible to catch the gondola up. The lines for the gondola are insane, and unless you want to be waiting for an hour (which has definitely happened to us), plan to get there close to when it opens.
One you get up the mountain, I would avoid going all the way down to the bottom unless you’re planning to leave for the day. Again, having to wait for the gondola eats away at a huge chunk of the time that you could have used to ski instead.
Bring your own food/snacks, or try to grab food at odd-hours (i.e. not at lunchtime). The chalet at the top gets super busy during lunchtime, and you even have to wait in line at times to get inside the cafeteria. Not fun.
Take a look at the map, and plan to try all the runs you can. The mountain isn’t very big, and if you’re planning to ski for 2 days, you can easily do all the runs (greens, blues) at least once in those 2 days.
Use the single skier lane. Even if you’re skiing with friends, you don’t necessarily have to take the lifts up together. Using the single skier lane saves so much time, especially because of how quickly it moves.

Of course, we ended off our trip with another visit to the Scandinave Spa. We enjoyed the experience so much last time that we had to go back. My massage was just as good as last time, and the pools, sauna, and steam room helped so much with my sore muscles. I left feeling so relaxed and ready for the trip home.

Aritzia Distributes 10,000 Packs of Leggings and T-Shirts to Healthcare Workers
Aritzia's Community Care Program, which has an ongoing focus on mentorship, volunteering, and financial support to help women and girls succeed, will now donate $20 million worth of clothing to frontline healthcare workers. The program came together with Good360 to create a sponsor package - consisting of two cotton tees and two pairs of leggings made of sweat-wicking material, each stitched with an exclusive Aritzia heart logo in gold - and 10,000 have been distributed to those on the front lines of COVID-19.
Aritzia is also giving customers the chance to purchase a set for healthcare heroes with a "You Get, We Give" initiative. For every package purchased (you can pick up the Diamond package for $100 or the Double Diamond for $200), Aritzia will donate two back to the community on your behalf. The easy-to-wear, easy-to-wash clothing included in the set is meant to help healthcare workers transition pre- and post-shift, keeping sanitary standards in mind.
Aritzia has shared snaps from grateful nurses and medics with POPSUGAR, which were posted on social media to thank the retailer for the thoughtful packages. "This gift to essential workers has become a staple piece of clothing, thank you @aritzia," one woman posted on Instagram. Masks and closed fitting rooms: Reopened retail to look vastly different

VANCOUVER — Shoppers at recently reopened Sleep Country stores looking to test mattresses or pillows will find a disposable protective barrier between them and the product. When Aritzia stores open soon in Vancouver, customers will be able to ask staff for face masks or gloves to wear while they peruse clothing racks.
Several large Canadian retailers are starting to reopen stores as provinces loosen restrictions aimed at controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, but personal protective gear, physical distancing and heightened cleaning measures will make the shopping experience very different.

Aritzia Inc. now considers there to be a "fourth dimension" to its store strategy that previously revolved around product, environment and customer service, said founder and CEO Brian Hill: the health and safety of customers and staff.
The retailer opened two of its stores recently — one in Winnipeg and another in Houston, TX. It's set to open three more in Vancouver over three days, starting Thursday.
Fewer customers will be allowed in each store at a time, with the figure depending on the store's size, said Hill. A staff member with a counter will keep track of those entering and leaving, and other staff will manage lines, if need be. Those staff are likely to be wearing masks or gloves, or both. Aritzia continues to assess what personal protective equipment employees should don.
Store associates will no longer take items from customers and carry them to fitting rooms, though shoppers will be allowed to touch clothes while they browse.
"I'm not suggesting we're going to encourage people, but we're not going to stop people from touching and feeling the product," said Hill, adding people have learned a lot about proper behaviour over the past couple weeks and are likely to act accordingly.
Every second fitting room will be closed and a cleaner will sanitize the space in between customers. Any clothes customers try on but don't purchase staff will be run under a steamer to disinfect.
Roots Canada plans to start opening some stores this Friday. Inside, customers will find more space to roam as stores will have fewer tables and other fixtures. Clothes will be hung, rather than folded and stacked, where possible.
All fitting rooms will be closed, but Roots will start accepting returns five days after stores reopen. Returned items will be tucked away for 72 hours and steamed before reappearing in stores.
"What we're trying to do is also give our staff some time to adapt to the new situation," said interim CEO Meghan Roach.
A lot of the company's customers are used to how the company's clothes fit, which should help them navigate sizing without trying items on, she said, though she noted the company will continue to revisit the fitting room decision and open them if it makes sense to do so.
Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc. plans to open 165 of its stores throughout this week and next, the company said in a statement released Monday. It declined an interview request.
The mattress retailer believes its stores lend themselves well to physical distancing as they are a "very low traffic destination" since it sells a specialty product. Still, it plans to use floor decals and signs to guide customer movement, and set up hand sanitizer stations, among other measures.
When staff recommend a product, the customer will receive a disposable mattress or pillow protector to test the item, it said.
One calculation consumers must make is determining whether the risk to venture into a store is worth it.
"Even if all of that is in place, I could still get this virus and die from it, and is this sweater really worth that happening?" said Doug Stephens, founder of Retail Prophet, a global consulting firm, as to what customers may be thinking.
In areas where stores have reopened, anecdotal evidence points to lower traffic.
Along the Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris, for example, stores experienced a 30 per cent drop in foot traffic, he said, while retailers in China reported 60 per cent to 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
That's partly because consumers remain concerned about their health and the safety of their loved ones, he said, and likely will continue to show restraint until scientists discover a vaccine and most of the population is innoculated.
It doesn't help that nearly every generation feels a financial strain from the outbreak. Retirees likely saw their RRSP balances drop, millennials are living through a second economic crisis during their relatively short careers and generation Z is entering a job market at an unprecedented time, he said.
"Across all consumer segments there's going to be some grave, grave concern about their future economic state."
Stephens believes the coronavirus will have a lasting impact on retail. With COVID-19 set to change many parts of how people live — including education, transportation, office space — it's bound to alter how people shop in the long run.
"It has to if it's just a reflection of how we live," said Stephens, who is currently writing a book on how the coronavirus will change the industry. "Resurrecting retail: the future of business in a post pandemic world" is set to come out in the spring of 2021.
Stores may no longer be an avenue for distributing products, he said, and companies will shift tremendous amounts of capital from physical assets to digital ones.
"There will be far fewer stores, and the bloodletting has already begun."

The company’s business has been so strong that it has never had to close any of its stores because of underperformance, and, in fact, when it opens a store, it conservatively estimates to be paid back in less than two years’ time.
The company is none other than the fashion retailer Aritzia (TSX:ATZ), which has managed to carve out a nice slice of the market for itself.
The stock has been a great growth stock for investors, especially considering it’s in an industry that is being avoided by most of the market, yet it was still able to increase its share price by roughly 20% in 2019.
Aritzia is reporting earnings this Thursday before the market opens, and although I never want to doubt a stock that’s hot, there are a couple things investors should know ahead of time.
In investing, one of the biggest mistakes investors can make is trying to predict a company’s earnings ahead of time. While I’m not trying to predict their earnings or say anything bad could happen, especially after the impressive performance the company has managed to put up the last few years, there are some important things to remember.
Since the stock has been a hot growth company, and its past earnings have been strong, investors will likely be expecting more of the same, but if earnings don’t come in as strong as expected by the market, there could be big movement in the stock’s share price.
At the moment, Aritzia is priced for perfection, so any blunder in its earnings or some of its business metrics could spark some fear in the market and cause a short-term sell-off of the stock.
Going into the earnings, investors are advised to look past the short-term noise and try to understand how Aritzia’s long-term business is growing and maturing, especially if the stock happens to get sold off due to short-term headwinds or some otherreason that doesn’t affect the company’s long-term outlook.
If that were to happen, it could create a major buying opportunity for long-term investors who know that Aritzia’s long-term growth strategy has been executed to perfection until now and should continue to help the company to outperform over the long run.
In its last earnings reports the main highlights were same-store sales growth, its plans for the future, and its overall profitability and growth rate.
Once again, these will be the focus going into its fiscal 2020 third-quarter earnings, so investors should watch carefully, as it reports on its sales numbers and announces plans to open new boutiques.
It will also be great to get an update on where the company is in regard to achieving the long-term financial goals it has set for itself. In the last earnings report, the company was on track or ahead of schedule on all of the growth targets, so investors will be looking for progress on those goals.
Although the stock has been one of the most impressive companies on the TSX the last few years, especially considering it’s a retail fashion company, it’s trading just off its 52-week high.
Since it’s priced so favourably, investors should be cautioned that unless it really hits it out of the park on these earnings, there could be a short-term pullback, but not to worry, as this would create a major buying opportunity for long-term investors and give you the chance to gain some exposure at a price offering much better value.

I am, admittedly, a creature of habit. Once I discover something that works for my wardrobe, I wear it to death. I personally find this to be a positive trait for a few reasons. First, from an environmental standpoint, if you take the time to invest in pieces you can wear on repeat, you’re reducing potential waste. Second, if you’re interested in cultivating your own personal style, mixing and matching items that speak to your own aesthetic helps build a style uniform . Third, there’s a sense of financial satisfaction that comes from getting a ton of mileage out of your purchases.
All that to say when I buy something you are bound to see me wearing it for many, many months to come. Since January 1, I’ve followed this “habit” and worn a handful of pieces that have made getting dressed every day easier and more fun. They range from essentials like underwear and basic T-shirts to splashier separates including a statement bag by an of-the-moment label to cute sheer socks that can be worn year-round. All winter long, I wore my favorite black wool coat from Aritzia. Now that temperatures are cooling down, I’ll be hanging that one in the closet and rotating in this ultra-chic trench. Because I’m a freelance writer, I need a professional bag to keep all of my belongings organized. This polished work tote has been a literal lifesaver. I adore a sheer sock styled with everything from sneakers to penny loafers to strappy sandals; these guys from Darner have been in my drawer for the last several months, and I can’t wait to experiment with more colors and prints. I’ve been really invested in finding sustainable fashion brands lately, and this newly launched unisex sunglasses label crafts eyewear from materials like reforested softwood trees, sand, and minerals. Plus, the shapes and colors are all sleek and versatile, which is always a bonus. I wore Labucq’s snake-effect ankle boots all fall and winter long, and now that spring is finally here, I’ll be trying the texture via the Los Angeles label’s slide sandals. This indie jewelry brand lets you personalize its disc necklaces with your initials—I’ve been wearing mine every day because it layers nicely with other jewelry and stands alone beautifully, too. If you enjoy a nighttime ritual that includes candles, face masks, and other luxurious indulgences, might I suggest adding this silk slip to the mix? I wear it every evening, and simply put, it makes me feel fancy. Madewell has always done a great pair of overalls, and this white iteration is my current favorite. Style them with a puff-sleeve blouse and a pair of low-heel sandals for a dreamy spring look. I’ve only been able to wear this swimsuit to the spa so far, but with hot weather around the corner (not to mention a couple of vacations booked!), I can’t wait to test drive this one-piece under the sun. The fabric is ultra-soft and the silhouette is so flattering. Nanushka is killing the accessory game as of late, and this little pink duffel will continue to accompany me to all dinners, parties, and everything in between. Though I tend to go for a more neutral palette, I strongly believe in a pop of color; right now, it��s this kiwi-green sheer blouse from NEED. I practice yoga around three to four times a week, and up until getting this matching set from Nylora, I never did it without a tank top layered on top. The fit and fabric make me feel comfortable enough to take my classes in just a sports bra and leggings, and I haven’t looked back. I don’t usually go for mesh underwear, but these thongs have changed my mind. They’re ultra soft, and there’s the perfect amount of stretch (aka they don’t cut into the sides of my waist at all).  This affordable chunky ring has been on my right hand for the last several months (through many-a-showers), and it hasn’t turned me green to date. If that’s not a testament to the quality of a piece of jewelry, I don’t know what is! In case you were curious, I’m team fanny pack. If you’re in need of a new everyday white tee, make it this one. It’s lightweight, but the quality of the cotton is delightful. Plus it’s a little boxy, so you can wear it with jeans, over a slip dress, or tucked into a cute skirt. I saw a girl on the subway wearing these sneakers and tapped her on the shoulder to find out who they were by. I had to overcome a bit of shyness, but I’m grateful I did! Hair clips are my favorite accessory trend at the moment, and Valet does a slew of cheeky, playful versions. These seashells are top-notch. I think it's probably no secret by now that I hate minimalism. I hate it as the incredibly tedious piece of personal performance art it has come to be in our society, but I also hate it as an aesthetic: your white-on-white-on-white life and meticulously crafted wardrobe of only the most wispy products Everlane and Aritzia have to offer are, frankly, a saltine cracker's idea of what a Cool Girl would wear.
In terms of its visual merits, or as a capital-S Style, the hyper-curated minimalism really only conveys one thing: "I wanted to take the very safest route to chic, cut away every possible misstep or risk. I saw the French Girl Chic articles and I was like … that's pretty damn homogenous, but smoking tests poorly in focus groups and those occasional striped shirts are too bold. Time to reduce my look even further until literally every item I purchase tells people 'I could get something more interesting, but I have enough money to choose not to.'"
