Aricka and “Rad Thad”/Thaddeus: music
(He’s the one on the left!)
*once again, a direct continuation from Aricka and Little James’ conversation, only now Aricka is walking with Thaddeus*
Thaddeus and Aricka were walking, mostly in silence, but then he asked her to sing. “Oh,” she says a bit shyly. “If it wouldn’t bother you…”
He laughs softly, a warm sound that makes Aricka feel like she’s in front of a roaring fire. “I asked, why would it bother me?”
She shrugs. “My music is a bit different than what I assume you’re used to hearing.” He tilts his head.
“If we were all the same it would be very boring, don’t you think?” A bright laugh escapes her; drawing the attention of several of the disciples around them. She blushes, mumbles an apology. They all nod, smiling as if to reassure her, and return to what they were doing previously. “Please?” He asks once more. She finally relented, a shy smile on her face.
“Great Aunt Maurine said at a hundred and three
Write scripture on your heart for when you need it
'Cause anxiety hates Psalm 23
So just say it to yourself 'til you believe it
And I'm feeling like I'm needing it right now
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He leads me by still waters 'til my fears are gone
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Oh, I know You are with me, my Father, my friend
Your goodness and mercy will follow me all of my days
I know by Your still waters, I'm safe..” she trails off, and Thaddeus is looking at her with a smile, an unreadable expression in his eyes. “What?” She laughs.
“We need to get you and James to sing together some time,” he says. “You have… such a gift. He was right- Adonai has blessed you. And me, by allowing me to hear you sing.”
Aricka’s face is positively crimson at this point, but before she can say anything, a hand grips her shoulder carefully, and a familiar voice fills her ears.
“Alright, alright,” it says. “My turn with the new girl. Thaddeus, Andrew is at the back wanting to talk about something with you.” He nods, and with a parting smile for Aricka, vanishes into the crowd of disciples following Jesus.
And then Aricka was left alone with the disciple she’d looked up to since she was able to read the Bible.
Peter.
