"The grind never stops." He declares, opening up the door to his office and vanishing inside.
"The grind never stops." You repeat mindlessly, brushing off the cemetery dirt from your sleeve before sitting down in your seat.
Tragically, one of your employees died violently at work. Which is why you are very surprised that they showed up for work the next day.

on signalis characters' voices (signalis spoilers!)
after playing signalis more than once and putting aside the overwhelming amount of feelings this game and its story can and will make one feel, it is easier to notice the more subtle details; e.g. enemies behavior, meaning behind documents and objects, and in this case, the characters' voices.
paying attention to the various living npcs you can talk to, one detail that stands out is that every character has a different tone of voice (similar to undertale).
i like to believe those sounds which accompany the text could represent what each character could sound like; one would expect, since replikas are basically copies, for them to have all the same voice.
well, that's not exactly the case.
here is a video with text and dialogues from all the npcs, without music to hear the "dialogue" clearly. (not all the dialogue is included, only one dialogue per character is present; except for elster as she does not like to speak much).
ACHTUNG: MAJOR SIGNALIS SPOILERS!
the dialogues are in chronological order:
-wounded star unit (STAR-S23?? is her name in the game files) in the aula before classroom 4C in floor B1, S-23 Sierpinski (elster included even if she has two lines);
-Isa Itou in the library, floor B1, S-23 Sierpinski;
-Storch Sieben (STCR-S2307) in the rationing office, floor B2, S-23 Sierpinski;
-EULR-S2312 (probably named Dezember given her number designation; eules in game like to use months as names, using the last two numbers of their designation as a reference) in the nurse station, floor B3, S-23 Sierpinski;
-Adler (ADLR-S2301), presumably in the elevator lobby in floor B4, S-23 Sierpinski;
-Arar (ARAR-S2318) in the vent below the Storch dorm in floor B8, S-23 Sierpinski;
-KLBR-S2302 in the library, floor B8, S-23 Sierpinski;
-Beo (MNHR-S2301) in the third room in the mines where monofilament stockpiles can be found, in the rightmost corridor.
-Ariane Yeong (and LSTR-512, still has an unbelievable amount of max two sentences at once) in the personnel room. floor B2, Penrose-512 (memory);
-Falke (FKLR-S2301) in her own room, found in Home.
you may ask, what purpose does comparing the "voices" serve? probably none, still i wished to know if they were the same sounds for every character or not.
here's what i could find out:
the majority of replikas have a different voice, with some exceptions:
-STCR and LSTR units have the same voice;
-as do STAR and FKLR units;
-a bit more expected, the gestalts npcs we see in the game (Isa Itou and Ariane Yeong) have the same voice.
now, for the fun stuff: by analyzing the frequencies which stood out the most in each "beep" from every character's voice, i could rank them from high pitched to low pitched ones.
again, has no purpose, but the result is actually delightful (to me).
here is the ranking:
1. kolibri
2. mynah
3. eule
4. isa-ariane
5. storch-elster
6. star-falke
7. adler
8. arar
pretty surprising, huh? i'd have wagered for isa/ariane to be in second place, followed by eules; also was expecting for arars to be just after the eules, and have behind them stars, then storches, then adler.
no one is surprised kolibri have the highest voices lmao, but mynah having an almost equally high voice was slightly unexpected but not unwelcome.
what's truly surprising to me is falke having the same voice as stars. i'd have expected something different tbh (stars being the lowest rank of protektors, etc etc, they're silly and stupid and crass; all things falke is not supposed to be).
elster having a deeper voice compared to ariane is the cutest thing ever! (as that post about them says)
that's probably the instance where you can notice the most that there is in fact a difference in most voices.
the funniest thing ever to me is that storches apparently have a higher pitched voice compared to stars, also arars having the deepest voice out of all replika is truly awesome to me (definitely fits).
here are to what musical notes the frequencies corresponded to, in the same ranking as before (visual rendering on a piano keyboard for fun i guess):
kolibri (G6 B6 E7 A7)
mynah (F#6 A#6 D#7 G#7)
eule (F6 A6 D7 G#7)
isa-ariane (F6 G#6 C#7 G7)
storch-elster (E6 G#6 C7 F#7)
star-falke (D#6 G6 B6 F7)
adler (D6 F#6/G6 B6 E7)
(adler has five notes as two close frequencies were distinct from each other, compared to only one in the "feminine sounding" voices. i guess that's how they made him sound different, by overlaying two notes)
arar (C#6 F6 A#6 D#7)
that's it! thanks for coming to my ted talk about signalis voices and listening to me ramble about them :)
#storches having a higher pitched voices compared to stars will never not be funny to me....so much violence for what!#i looove voices!!!#go off arar queen!!!! we love ya <3#writing my essay on enemy behaviors next#signalis spoilers#signalis elster#signalis ariane#signalis storch#signalis star#signalis arar#signalis kolibri#signalis mynah#signalis falke#signalis eule#signalis adler#isa itou#ariane yeong#signalis lstr#lstr signalis#lstr#elster signalis#storch signalis#signalis stcr#stcr signalis#stcr#star signalis#starling#arar signalis#signalis#rambling tag

3000 cycles I missed you fucking kills me every time because it sounds so warm, so loving, so comforting and beautiful. it’s literally the sound of love and ariane and elsters love for eachother. It’s played in the one moment that isn’t hellish. The one moment they’re together. And you know what happens next.
#sorry for signalisostposting it will happen again. and again. and again. and ag#I swear I’m probably gonna end up writing something for every track. Signalis and Dungeon Meshi: Unorganized Comparison
Both are about crawling through dungeons, fighting monsters, and picking things up to get into inaccessible places.
There's a pair of siblings and a lesbian couple, both are cruelly separated by powerful forces. The living half (Marcille Donato, Elster, Isa Itou, Laios Touden) is willing to do anything to bring back their loved one (Falin Touden, Erika Itou, Ariane Yeong) from the depths of the dungeon. The searchers are motivated not just by love but guilt too, a stubborn refusal to fail their beloved one last time by abandoning then.
Both stories are about the evils of anthropocentric ideologies. It is the inescapable first lense that we all see the world through. It is a subjective, selfish, and almost nihilistic view point. It is the belief that the universe cannot match the significance of humanities existence. For anyone who has loved another human, this is an easy ideology to embrace.
It's also the foundation for hierarchical authoritarianism which dictates that you are either a productive member of humanity or a nonhuman agent of a hostile universe. Those who try to view the universe as itself and not as a means of, or obstacle to, the gratification of human desire are put into the latter grouping. Those who conform are elevated to positions of power within the hierarchy. This is illustrated by the suffering of Ariane Yeong and Laios Touden. As well as the elevation of various political figures in Dungeon Meshi and Kommandant Falke in Signalis.
Both universes feature similar world building elements: a cosmic force grants individual humans their anthropocentric desires resulting in the formation of impossible things. In Signalis, bioresonance allows for the colonization of other worlds and the creation of replikas. In Dungeon Meshi, the Demon's intercession has resulted in the formation of different races, monsters, dungeons, and the magical arts.
And now we come to where the two narratives truly differ with each other:
The characters in Dungeon Meshi are able to triumph over anthropocentric thought and create a better world. Tragically, the characters in Signalis are not able to do the same and become trapped in a hellish existence. This isn't exclusively because of their traits, they are unconsciously conforming to a larger pattern.
In Dungeon Meshi, the natural world still exists and can be defended from corrupting supernatural influence. Even when the earth is devastated by magically augmented warfare, the world is big enough to recover. There are trained specialists, like the canaries, who are able to counter the expansion of dungeons and it's associated threats. Because magic is so important to the world dungeon meshi, knowledge is prevalent with a few severe restrictions.
In Signalis, Vineta/Earth was destroyed by the war between the Eusan Nation and Empire. The closest that people can get to nature is potted plants and a nights sky. The Eusan Nation limits knowledge about bioresonance so that no one can use that to challenge their authority. As a result, no one can understand what's happening during a bioresonance crisis.
In Dungeon Meshi, food preparation is a narrative focal point, it connects people to the world and each other. In Signalis, food is a secondary consideration, it is rationed out by the Eusan Nation, given to good citizens and denied to dissidents.
Ryoku Kui is a japanese manga creator and Rose Engine are a pair of german game developers. One could guess that the artistic differences between them are reflective of their nations history during a certain conflict that happened in the last century...

"MOTHER FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-" I yelled at the top of my lungs, grabbing my pinky toe with tears in my eyes.
Why did it have to be at the exact time I smashed my toes on the corner of the wall!?
You were born with the greatest power of them all: invincibility. There is one catch, you are mortal for a single random minute each day. You just found out which minute it is.

I'm very excited, and very happy to present the prologue to 'In the Shadow of Sierpinski'. This is the Signalis fic I've been working on for about a month now, and have been brainstorming for even longer.
The rest if Act 1 is still coming on the 27th, so I guess we can just consider this the teaser to end all teasers. Anyways, I sincerely hope you enjoy! BTW, supreme spoiler warning for those who have not completed the game.

I'm sorry, but why don't we talk about Witch Hunt more? Seriously, I think it might be my favorite DAO DLC. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hell out of Awakening. Leliana's Song is good. The Golems of Amgarrak is... eh, bad. I didn't really like that one. The Warden's Keep, The Stone Prisoner, and Return to Ostagar are all amazing and I love them.
But Witch Hunt??? Y'all. I can't. I'm too emotional right now.
I have at least one dynamic from each game that I'm obsessed with. For DAO, it's the dynamic between romanced!Alistair, Tabris, and Morrigan. I've talked before about the dark ritual and stuff in this post, so let's just say that my Tabris, Rose, very much has unfinished business and a score to settle with Morrigan.
Tabris and Morrigan grew so close throughout the entire journey of DAO, y'know? Close enough that Morrigan claimed she thought of her as a sister, and Tabris felt the same way... and then in one single moment, it's just shattered.
There were signs that Tabris ignored, like the way Morrigan dismissed all the circle mages and claimed they should be left to their fates since they "allow themselves to be caged like cattle." Or how she disapproved every time Tabris wanted to help those down on their luck. Or, worst of all, when Morrigan disapproved when Tabris chose to kill the Tevinter slaver instead of making a deal with him to use the lives of the remaining elves to grant her more power... one of those caged elves being Tabris' father.
But she gave Morrigan the benefit of the doubt; she's sheltered and only had Flemeth as an influence and teacher, of course she's unempathetic and selfish, but there is good in Morrigan's heart. She can learn to be more empathetic and to care for others.
At least, Tabris believed that until Morrigan confessed that she's known about the ultimate sacrifice and the dark ritual from the beginning, that Flemeth sent her with the wardens with a purpose that Morrigan intends to follow through with. It's devastating and it broke Tabris' heart.
She just learned that a warden has to die to stop the blight, and that warden could be her or Alistair. Not only are they romantically involved, but they've been through all of this shit together, they're the only ones who fully understand what being a grey warden is like. They carry the burden on their shoulders, and they're probably going to lose each other to the archdemon.
And Morrigan waits until she's at her most vulnerable to ask that of her.
Again, I've gone into more detail about that before, but at this point Rose is done with people deceiving her. She's done with Morrigan... except she's not. It's the betrayal and knowing Morrigan got what she wanted that causes Rose to go searching for her.
To Morrigan's credit, she does give some answers. She claims she didn't thing the archdemon would show itself so soon, and she did what she had to because she didn't wish to see Tabris hurt or die. I believe her, and to an extent, Tabris believes her... but Morrigan still doesn't get WHY it's a betrayal.
Morrigan's right: She will never understand Tabris, and Tabris will never understand her. She can insist it's not a betrayal all she wants, but it absolutely is, and Tabris has never allowed anyone who crossed her to just walk away... except for Morrigan.
Until now.
Hearing that Morrigan manipulated her way into the trust of this Dalish clan so she could steal their book and run is just further evidence in Tabris' eye that she hasn't changed. Maybe it was always foolish to believe she could.
So... she stabbed Morrigan.
She didn't do it to kill her; Morrigan is the daughter of Flemeth and a powerful mage with healing magic, a mere stab isn't going to kill her.
No, it's about what the stab represents: "I am done with you."
And how the scene plays out? It's so dramatic and good, just the way everything slows down, the music, how they make eye contact as the stabbing happens just....
I know it sounds really bad, and this is the part where I remind everyone that I ADORE Morrigan, but the stabbing ending is so satisfying from a story-telling standpoint for my playthrough.
It's so tragic and it hurts and I hate it.... but I love it, y'know?
I love Witch Hunt, like I haven't even talked about Ariane and Finn, or how the circle just has all these books on Dalish artifacts and translations of elvhen, or how other eluvians can be found with a shard from the broken one in the dalish origin.... like you're telling me that Merrill had a piece of the puzzle? If she had the knowledge, she could've found a working eluvian to study?? I'm going to gnaw my own leg off--
Listen, I could gush about this all day.
But now that I've completely finished DAO, it's time to replay DA2.
#dragon age origins#dao#dao morrigan#warden tabris#dao witch hunt#i could write an entire post about ariane and finn like they're such fun companions and so INTERESTING and their dynamic is so good#it's not a long dlc but i kinda wish it was just so i could spend more time with them before finding morrigan#and the reunion with morrigan is just hhhhnnngggggggggg i am feeling too many emotions help#i love morrigan what a great character sorry rose stabbed you but y'know... that's kind of thematic for her#morrigan will be fine... well physically she will but the emotional damage is a big oof#can't wait to hear about it in dai... i can't even remember what she says if the warden stabs her?#something about not parting on good terms or something skskskss whatever it is it's an understatement i'm sure#anyway i'm going to replay da2 and obsess over merrill's arc... i just want to give her the answers from witch hunt and let her go nuts#listen is it too much to ask that warden carver find this info out from tabris and give it to merrill#and the two of them go on a long adventure to find a working eluvian?? hmmmm??? and while they're at it they can steal from the circle#the circle doesn't need all those elven books okay it's fine
