Are you looking forward to some fishy fun? Aquariums are an exciting family activity, and the range of marine life exhibiting a slice of marine habitats always amazes visitors. If you don’t want to spend heavily and travel to exotic places, you can explore some of the must-visit aquariums in India.
Tumblr media
1. VGP Marine Kingdom, Chennai
A private enterprise, VGP Marine Kingdom is the first and largest underwater aquarium in India. A wide range of small and big aquatic animals are seen in overhead aquariums and life-size tanks. There are 200+ fauna species in five habitats - deep oceans, mangroves, gorges, rainforests, and coastal. Each of these habitats is populated with species belonging to a specific aquatic system on earth. The aquarium has 80 million liters of pristine water spread across 70,000 sq. ft. The other attractions include scuba diving, live feeding shows, underwater tunnel, candlelight dinners, mermaid shows, etc.
2. Government Aquarium, Bengaluru
Located in Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park area, the aquarium is India’s second largest. The Kerala Fisheries Department is responsible for the maintenance. It houses indigenous and exotic freshwater species, both ornamental and cultivable varieties. The octagonal-shaped building has two floors with fish tanks on each. The aquarium is open on all days except Monday. Visitors need an entry ticket.
3. Under the Sun Aquarium, Udaipur
Under the Sun Aquarium is situated in Rajasthan’s city of lakes. It is one of India’s largest aquariums, run by the company managing the Karni Mata Ropeway. There are around 150 varieties of fish, both marine and freshwater. The main gallery is 125 meters long. In the tank, you can see interesting species, such as Archer Fish, Alligator Gars, Mormyrus Rume, Fire Belly Newts, Indonesian Mud Crabs, Albino Frogs, Senegal Dragons, etc. These fishes are sourced from diverse waters across the globe.
Final thoughts
No matter which aquarium you want to visit, remember to find out about the opening and closing hours and plan accordingly. A trip to the aquarium entails a few hours of walking. So, make sure you have sufficient energy and carry plenty of water to drink.
