Day 10 Chualar River to Aptos 47 Miles
4:12 time, 1,882 calories, 1,696 climb, 11.3 avg mph
Waking up under the bridge was nice because it marked the end of attempting to sleep under the bridge, which had been a challenge.  My friend August asked me if there had been any really scary parts of the trip so far, to be honest, this was it. Being in a campsite you can lay down and trust that you belong there and everything about your surroundings accepts and allows your presence, gorilla camping, under a bridge, does not provide that luxury.  Every little animals footstep, every rustling in the bushes, and every car over head that stops for some reason longer than you should at a stop sign is unnerving. The location would have been a great setting for an “escaped psychopath finds camper and eats him” scenario on the evening news.  I have a new respect and empathy for bums and what it must be like to never really feel safe, to always be vulnerable to the elements, and other people, and animals.  It’s a powerful thought to remember not to take for granted the most basic thing we posses, a roof over our heads, a sense of safety.  I would also say that its highly valuable to remove yourself from that comfort zone sometimes and see what your made of,  It’s easy to know when your safe but when your wits and confidence is challenged you can learn a lot about your self in a short period of trial. I was really happy with my decision to stay on the river where I did, waking up early and hitting the road beat out the wind, such a relief.  Of course the field workers were up and working as well and that was pretty much all there was to see pedaling out of farm land back toward the coast. The giant rolling tractor work stations they have are incredible.  They have those metal rollers that allow you to slide boxes down them on giant arms that swing out and down to make work space off and it can be pulled down the rows as the workers progress, it’s a pretty cool invention, right there in the field they have fresh picked produce sorted, packaged, boxed and taped shut ready for delivery straight to the store.  I saw all kinds of greens, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, onions,   brussell sprouts, strawberries and raspberries being grown and harvested out there in inland California,  It wasn’t Big Sur but it was cool and educational and gives me a greater appreciation for where my food comes from which is an important aspect of modern life I think we don’t spend enough time understanding or contemplating.  And! none of those farms were organic or non GMO plants, that a major issue, along with the facts of corporate exploitation of labor that I witnessed so much of, draws me toward agreement and understanding with the #boycottdriscoll “movement” and the like. However, it doesn’t change the fact of a hungry, thirsty, bored biker stopping and picking fresh berries and absolutely loving it! I finally completed the 150 mile detour and was back on the coast.  I started north again at Marina then stopped in Castroville for breakfast.  80 percent of the US’s artichokes come from Castroville which I know because I got educated by the Wikipedia print out inserted into the menu at the Giant Artichoke Restaurant there.  Most of the worlds artichokes, a thistle with an edible flower, are grown in the Mediterranean, but Castroville is proud to be holding it down state side! I was immediately bummed I didn’t see any of them growing, I’ve always been a big fan!
Another 20 miles from Moss Landing to Aptos where I stayed with my friend Brian “Chubs” Cortright for the night. He got married last year and has a beautiful home just south of Santa Cruz with his wife Lauren.  We had lamb burgers with fetta and pickled onions and wine and delightful conversation for diner and into the night.  I always know I can count on my favorite kinds of conversation with Brian, he is very knowledgeable on a vast range of topics.  He’s also a college drop out like myself and I like to think that both of us, while not in university, were still hungry for information and because of the less traditional routes we took were able to be less bound to a set ciricullum or career path that it allowed us to seek and find wherever and whatever we sought.  I am proud of my education even though there is no piece of paper to validate it.  Intelligence can be acquired in many ways and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that a self discovered education in the world can be much more valuable that the degree so many kids have that stands for little more than how much they learned to drink in giant state colleges,  and don’t even get me started on Greek Life  At the same time however I wish I could go to school now, not then, because I know better how to learn and understand why to do so when the question has become more than just about how much money I can make when I get out.   Anyway, enough of self justifying my not finishing college….and all the money I wasted there….. While I left it for a great reason my experience there was shit, at Dallas Baptist University, another thing religion ruined for me… but I’m not bitter…. I have sufficiently earned my disgust of religion and the education I earned climbing out of the box of indoctrination was worth every penny!
