1967 - Lotus Flower by the Appletree Theatre.
The great thing about being deep into 1960s music is that thereâs always something new and interesting to discover no matter how much you think you know.

Here is some photos captured of the #bodyimagepositivityworkshop that was held during #mentalhealthawarenessweek in May. This event is part of @mhfestival with this year's theme being 'Body Image'. Body image is still a taboo subject in our society faced by many as a daily struggle to come to terms with what is 'body image?' The wonderful space was provided by @DundeeRep and support from Amanda, Abby and Leila! Creative activities and fun brought by the amazing @SCRAPantics and us at @Howitfelt_littledebz The day consisted of Body casting, Puppeteering, team building, and supportive discussion. And was strengthened by @AimeeGrace_ photography and creative perspective and Dr Laura #AppleTree with her perspective on health and nutrition. And resources and support provided by #scottishrecoverynetwork & @Penumbrascotland And a massive Thank you! to all who came along to share your stories and perspectives and to all who created a beautiful body cast! It was a wonderful day and I know together we can share and tackle body image together! I can't express how beautiful and real this event was I'm so grateful to have been a part of it. Hopefully we can do more events like this in the future. What a beautiful collaboration! Till the next one team! (at Dundee Rep Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByVERsEj6wp/?igshid=axrryjqp996f

Erykah Badu
by: Liana Hernandez
On February 26th, 1971 the queen of neo-soul was born. Born Erica Abi Wright, also known as the famous Erykah Badu, came up with her name by using the Egyptian word kah meaning oneâs âinner selfâ and badu because it was her favorite type of jazz-riff scat sound. Her persona is heavily associated in the music industry because she is a musician, singer-songwriter, record producer and DJ but she also is an activist, doula, actress and holistic healer. The 46-year-old goddessâs work is influenced from a variety of music such as rhythm and blues, 1970s soul and 1980s hip-hop. Her own music is strictly jazz, funk, hip-hop and soul. In her teenage years, Badu started freestyling under the name DJ Apples for her local radio station in Dallas. She attended Grambling University to major in theatre,, where she would spent her time performing in the local Dallas Theater Center. She decided to leave to pursue her career in music, so she worked as a drama teacher and waitress while recording her first demo.Â
This demo is what sparked her professional career, where music producer Kedar Massenberg discovered and signed her. Kedarâs label, called Kedar Entertainment, later merged with Universal Motown to record âyour Precious Loveâ a song sung by Badu and DâAngelo. Baduâs biggest hits were on her debut album âBaduizmâ released in 1997 with songs such as âOn and Onâ and âAppletreeâ. This album alone work two grammy awards for best female R&B vocal performance and best R&B album. She then won another grammy when she paired up with the Roots to create the song âYou Got Meâ. Alongside the collaborations that promoted her career with popularity, Badu held herself down with her natural talent and wisdom. A majority of her music is inspired by her own beliefs. Beliefs of her African heritage, her life and her philosophy of African-American folk traditions. Her album âMamaâs Gunâ, expresses topics like her insecurities, social issues and personal relationships. In her third album âWorldwide Undergroundâ regards hip hop culture, love, gang culture and how life is in the ghetto. She uses her fame and fortune to express her thoughts on sociopolitical topics to the people as well.

Track of the day: Oddisee - Long Way Home https://youtu.be/m1CW0aYnO0M Support: http://ift.tt/2oSkrAV http://ift.tt/1MSRMA4 http://ift.tt/2oSEmQs http://ift.tt/2pFCcq3 http://ift.tt/2oSz4EC http://ift.tt/2pFDgdw http://ift.tt/2oSgYCt Oddisee is an everyman with extraordinary talent. Both a rapper chronicling the perils and joys of ordinary existence, and a virtuosic producer attuned to the vibrations of how life actually sounds. But donât mistake the Odd Tape for the noise of birds chirping, idle chatter, or car alarms; itâs that internal soul-jazz reverberating at the back of your brain. For the last decade, the Mello Music Group artist has alternated between instrumental albums, full-length rap records, and his role as one-third of Diamond District. The Odd Tape is technically the formerâthere are no vocalsâbut if you call this an instrumental album, you might as well say the same about Bitches Brew. After a decade making music, the Prince Georges, Md.-raised and Brooklyn-based has transcended influences, comparisons and genre. The Odd Tape showcases the range of a composer bending hip-hop, soul, and jazz into singular form, tapping into that same emotional Fort Knox that animates all wordless choruses. The Odd Tape revolves around the rhythms of the artistâs daily life. It starts in the morning with âAlarmed,â that sounds like if Shuggie Otis did a psychedelic eye-opening cover of Nasâ âShootouts.â It rolls through âRight Side of the Bed,â with its glitter-gold sax lines, loose drums, and sunshine-slanting-through-the-blinds keyboards. Oddisee went from sampling to creating the eternal sounds of his original inspirations. You can hear older gods like Roy Ayers, Bob James, and Fela, but mostly you hear Oddisee continue to come into his own. As Pitchfork described his previous album, 2015âs The Good Fight: âthe music feels distinctly international and unhindered, far removed from the straight-ahead boom-bap he used to make. Heâs always created on his own terms, but [this] feels like a hearty "fuck you" to prevailing groupthink and the industryâs creative limitations.â Released May 13, 2016 Tracklist: 01. Alarmed 02.
