So I take it the haunted stuff is from personal experience???? Wtffffff do you still live there
So, my parents first apartment was haunted. My mom lived there and when they got married, my dad moved in with her, and I came along soon after. My mom had been there for years and knew it was haunted. She thought there were two spirits: one bad and one playful. The playful one would make noises (sounded like someone doing a raspberry while flying across the room) at night in her bedroom. My dad was usually asleep, but one night he was awake and heard it too. The playful spirit would also hide stuff and put it in weird places.
The dark spirit scared her. While living there she would hear growling and the room would get really cold (this is a cheap condo in Phoenix so imagine). My dad’s dog would growl every night down the hallway, and my mom say a dark shadow watching her almost every night. She would ask it what it wanted and it would disappear. Once, her friends were house-sitting and one of them heard the growling and saw the dark shadow walk past them. The next night, the friends slept in the same bed and the woman woke up to this feeling the something was holding her down, and the crucifix around her neck was floating in the air. She screamed and woke up the other friend who saw the floating necklace and when he sat up, it fell and she could move again.
When I was born, my dad’s dog would growl at nothing while sitting next to my crib. One day, my dad came home and found the dog dead in the nursery room (my mom had taken me to work or something). The vet said that the dog died of stress. He was healthy up to that point.
The final straw was when my mom was a year or so after I was born, taking care of me in the nursery. I was in a playpen on the floor and she stepped out to get formula or something. Then she heard a loud bang and ran back into the nursery. An old cabinet they were using to store baby stuff had been pushed over, and it was leaning over my playpen. If it had fallen completely, it would have killed me, but it was suspended in midfall. My mom grabbed the edge of the playpen and dragged it and me out of the way, and the cabinet fell onto the floor. She thinks that the dark spirit possibly pushed it over, because there’s no possible way the cabinet came down otherwise, but if it did somehow fall naturally, at the very least the playful spirit was keeping it from killing me. Either way, she decided it was time to move.
The next house was fine, but we moved to Texas when I was 8 and this is the house we lived in where a lot of weird shit happened to me.
Everything was normal when we first moved in and for years. I noticed shadow figures in the mornings sometimes while I ate breakfast, but my mom said that if I didn’t feel scared, it was nothing to worry about—possibly family members just “checking in on us”. Then one day when I was 11, I was rooting around my room on a boring day and I found a small grate in a built-in cabinet in my room. I managed to pry it open, and found a small space underneath the cabinet that went down into the crawlspace under the house. I couldn’t get down there through it, but I could reach my hand in, so I did. I found some odd stuff: one puzzle piece, some newspapers from the 60’s and 70’s, and some ribbons from a local high school’s homecoming from the 70’s.
The ribbons were odd...there was a yellow and a red one (presumably the school colors) and had homecoming game credo’s on them: “Annihalate the Indians” with an image of a cartoon Native American getting a touch down scored on them. Not very cool. But, it gets worse. Someone had crossed out the word Indian and written in the word Jew.
Now, the people who owned this house before us were the family that had actually built the property back in 1940-something. This neighborhood was actually developed around our house (which is why ours is on a hill) and most of the houses around here are designed by the same architect who designed this one...who happened to be the owner as well. He and his wife were Jewish and came from somewhere back east, moving to this Texas town after getting the architectural development job. They had two kids and one on the way, and he sort of built the house with them in mind. My bedroom had a shared, Jack and Jill style bathroom with a small second bedroom which would be the baby’s room, and my bedroom had a built-in vanity and a lot of extra space for the two kids to live in together. Well, the baby was born, and sometime during it’s beginning years on this earth, it got pneumonia and died in the very bedroom I’m typing this in. The other two kids grew up, and the boy inherited and continued to live in the house, having his own two kids, of which, the oldest son, due to bullying in high school because of being Jewish...killed himself in my bedroom.
Well, I showed my mother this stuff I had found and she told me to throw it all away, and I did. After that, things started to happen. The first weird thing (which I didn’t mention in my previous post) was when I was playing basketball outside. I missed the basket and the ball rolled into the lawn and stopped far away in the grass. I rolled my eyes and started to walk over to get it when it just, suddenly rolled back directly to my feet. The grass is thick and the ground was flat, there was no way that wind or anything else pushed that basketball to me. Plus, there’s a feeling you get when something supernatural happens—a feeling you can’t ignore. I told my mom and she dismissed it.
Well, then some of the other things started happening—and usually only when I was home alone. I felt targeted. Eventually my parents looked into the history of the house by calling the records office and the previous family. We discovered the death and suicide and things started to add up. For the first three winters we were there, every winter I got severe pneumonia. So bad that the bottom of my left lung is, to this day, scarred so bad I can only use 60% of it. When my mom learned about the pneumonia, she called in a Rabbi to do a blessing of the house and the room where the the kid had died. We even followed Jewish grieving traditions as suggested by the Rabbi. I never got sick again.
But other activity in the house continued, still targeted at me. A few times my parents witnessed something. One time, me and my dad were sitting in the kitchen talking and eating apple strudel (irrelevant, but a memory) and we suddenly felt like we weren’t alone. We looked at each other and then one of the kitchen chairs moved like someone was sitting down to join us. It freaked him out. By then, I was used to it.
Then, when I got into my junior year in high school, everything stopped. Just, gone. I had just turned 16 and school started and...nothing. No more shadows. No more lights going on or off or doors moving. The dogs were calm at night. No more whispers or strange feelings. I had almost forgotten the house was ever haunted. One day my mom packing for a business trip (with my dad because they worked for the same company) asked me, “Are you going to be okay alone? Has anything happened recently?” I realized it hadn’t and we felt compelled to look up the information we had collected on the house’s history. The boy had killed himself when he was 16, the end of his sophomore year.
I’ve never had any flat out haunted experiences in the house since then, and I’m currently staying here with my mom for the rest of this month. So, that’s my abridged haunted house story. (I have had many other paranormal experiences at different locations though)

Vampire Hero (Chapter 1)
(yn) your name (yln) your last name (yfn) your full name I hope you guys already know what these mean so yeah this is all I'm saying
The moment my small hand gripped the weird stick with a bat everything changed.
Daddy was a hero and Mommy was a retired hero who collected very old things. One day Mommy came home with a weird looking walking stick wrapped in a towel while Daddy was on the couch drinking his weird looking apple juice. "Odoriko! Look at this antique walking stick! This could be the best thing ever!" Daddy looked at Mommy, as I stopped playing with my All Might toy. "Yeah and how much did you pay for it Kyoku?" Mommy looked very excited, like how excited I get when Daddy tells me how he saved people! "Well nothing! This woman just pushed it into my hands with a panicked look and ran off."
Daddy froze. "What did this woman look like?" Mommy tapped her chin like she usually does when she's thinking. "Well she was wearing a purple dress, short brown hair, and glasses. She looked very... scared. Like something was after her, but before I could ask her if she was alright she was just gone." Daddy shook his head with a very sad look in his eyes. "Ah well I can tell you this... that woman is dead...(I'm sorry fans of Missi!!!!) she was found in an alleyway with slash marks on her, we are thinking it's Stain."
That's sad. I hope she's okay up in heaven. "Well how about I make us dinner now? What do you two want?" Daddy and I looked at each other smiling. "PIZZA!!!!!" Mommy just laughed at us and nodded. "Okay okay." She put the walking stick down and she and daddy walked into the kitchen. I looked at the walking stick and slowly reached out to touch it. That's when there was the sound of breaking glass in the kitchen. I grabbed the stick to protect myself when a man covered in blood walked in.
He looked very strange. He had 2 scarves that looked ripped and strange grey boots in his hands were 2 swords covered in blood. Tears blurred my vision, "Huh those two pieces of trash had a kid?" He grinned at me. "Maybe I can take you and make you my sidekick? We can stop all those heroes who are after money and fame!" I ran at him holding the stick ready to hit him but he blocked my hit with one of his swords, but had a shocked look. "Well aren't you strong, kid?" I had managed to push him back? How I was quirkless... That's when another strange man crashed into the door. He was tall and pale. "Well there it is..." He looked from the man in front of me to me. "Well what have I stumbled upon?" The scarf man frowned at the new person. "Who the hell are you?" Tall man grinned and that's when I noticed, he had fangs. "V-vampire." The tall man looked at me "That's right sweetheart and my name is Duke, I came here to get my cane back but I see it has chosen a new host. Also you killed Missi." He growled and grabbed the man and threw him out of the window. He looked at me one last time with a grin. "Well til we meet again Ms (Y/N).~" He jumped out the window.
~Time skip: Half a year~
It's been 6 months since Stain, as I figured out who he was, killed Mommy and Daddy. I had to take care of myself. I taught myself how to use the stove and oven. I taught myself how to read, since Mommy and Daddy can't read me my bedtime story anymore. I could feel myself breaking everyday. I see little things out of the corner of my eye. I think I'm going crazy.
~Time skip: 3 weeks later~
I sat in the corner of my room rocking myself singing the song Mommy always sang to me to calm me down. "Raindrops on roses And whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favorite things Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels Doorbells and sleigh bells And schnitzel with noodles Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings These are a few of my favorite things Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes Silver-white winters that melt into springs These are a few of my favorite things When the dog bites When the bee stings When I'm feeling sad I simply remember my favorite things And then I don't feel so bad Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favorite things Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings These are a few of my favorite things Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes Silver white winters that melt into springs These are a few of my favorite things When the dog bites When the bee stings When I'm feeling sad I simply remember my favorite things And then I don't feel so bad." I could feel the tears fall down my cheeks and chin. There was no more power to the house and I ran out of food about a week ago. I'm hungry and thirsty. I want my mommy and daddy back. I played with the cane that I had learned the bat could open and there was a flame. That kept me occupied. That's also when someone kicked down the door. I had to close my eyes because of how bright this person was. "Hey there's a kid in here!" Said a gruff voice. Then I realized who it was, my eyes widened. "Endeavor..." He looked at me and then I blacked out succumbing to the darkness.
~Time skip: 2 1/2 weeks later~
I woke up to bright lights. I hissed in pain and looked around I was in a hospital? That's when I saw a blonde skinny man sitting next to me with his eyes closed. Who is this? Is he a policeman? No then he would be wearing an uniform. Maybe he's here to take you to a mental hospital.~ I gasp and look around. "Who- who's there?" my voice sounds all scratchy. Oh deary I'm not actually there I'm in your head.~ I will be here when you succumb to your insanity.~ Now I must go. Till we meet again, dearie.~ I was shaking. "Hey kid are you alright?" the man had woken up and was giving me a worried look. I tilt my head he kind of sounded like All Might but less... loud? "Are you All Might?" he started to panic slightly. I just giggled he was funny. "Y-yeah, but don't say it out loud. Okay kid my name is Toshinori Yagi and I'm going to adopt you." Someone opened the door. A man in a trench coat came in. "Hey Toshinori is the kid up?" All Might nodded with a sigh. "Yeah she's up, Tsukauchi." Tsukauchi nodded. "Okay kid I'm gonna ask you some questions, okay?" I nod.
I sat up. "Okay firstly what is your name?" "My name is (y/f/n)." "Okay um how old are you?" I puff out my chest. "I am 6 years old! And I'm already a big girl!" Toshinori and Tsukauchi both chucked. "Okay can you tell me what happened to your parents?" My mood dropped. "They are gone. Stain killed them..." Silence filled the room. "Ah do you remember what happened?" I looked up at Mr. Tsukauchi. "Well he came out of the kitchen and I had grabbed the cane that a woman gave Mommy before she was killed, her name was Missi. So Stain came into the living room and was gonna take me, but Mr. Duke saved me!" The two men looked at each other. "Who's Mr. Duke sweetheart?" "He's a vampire, but he's a good one! He threw Stain out the the window." I told them everything.
After a week I was let out and given the cane. I said thank you and took my new Daddy's hand. "Can I call you Dad Might?" He looked at me, "Only at home sweetheart, you can call me dad in public so people don't get confused." I nod. My new dad is gonna be the best!
A/N
So this is chapter one. If you are disappointed welp sorry. More will come in the next chapter~

FusionFall Writing Prompts: Nov. 2019, Prompt #1
It’d been a while since Silya had been to Sector V. The suburban town was like a breath of fresh air after weeks spent fighting in the Darklands. Of course, just as with most of the main force, she couldn’t stay for long: She’d only been allowed to return after taking on a few missions around Goat’s Junkyard and signing on to help instruct some of the newer recruits. Lucky for her, she wouldn’t be at it alone.
Even if he was still relatively new to the warfront, Tonix was a brother-in-arms she’d known from the beginning. He had his own work to do in the area: That evening, however, was a time to celebrate. It’d been ages since they’d last met up. The agent glanced around the treehouse’s improvised mess hall until she noticed a familiar, tall, red hat sticking out from the crowd. She smiled, walking over to the figure with a trayful of food in hand.
“Glad to finally get some real food?” she greeted, sitting across from him at a fold-up table.
Looking up from his meal, the dark-haired young man flashed a grin of his own in pleasant surprise. “Hey, you made it!” he cheered back, swallowing a hefty bite. Then he looked down, poking at some greens with a fork, “Yeah, sure beats the usual rations anyhow—or maybe I’m just that starved.”
“You don’t know the half of it until you’ve spent some time over at Townsville Park’s base,” Silya reached for a nearby salt shaker, “Let’s just say that the Scotsman and Max Tennyson aren’t two guys who should ever share recipes.”
She looked down at the spread in front of her. Really, whoever’s turn it was in the kitchen had gone all-out: Rolls, brick-a-broccoli casserole, corn on the clob, roast meef, you name it. Someone had even fried up cinnamon apples. Maybe it could be blamed on the season, but she was thankful for it nonetheless. One person could only stand eating MREs for so long.
“I thought you didn’t like Marzipanian food,” Tonix commented, pointing at her tray with his fork.
“I don’t,” she replied, biting into the corn, “but I can stand it—so long as it doesn’t talk back to me anyway.” Really, she didn’t understand most of the strange foods that came from that place. Nevermind the borderline sentient stuff; the idea of burple nurples made her cringe, the gamble with crazy cakes wasn’t worth it, and soso souffle was just plain disgusting! There were a handful of good desserts though, and a part of her actually wondered if there were any strudel doodles around.
“Do you still want to go out for ramen sometime?”
“If we could ever find the time. You mean that hole-in-the-wall place you talked about?”
“Yeah, it’s close to Marquee Row. Maybe we can drop by if we’re both ever stationed in the city together.”
Her smile turned bittersweet. It’d be awesome if it weren’t for the war sending them both everywhere. If a Fusion Fighter wasn’t stationed anywhere specific, it was easy to get caught up running from one mission to the next. The adrenaline was limitless, but all aspects of normalcy were pretty much gone. Rather than say what they already knew though, she nodded, “You know, I get sent to Tech Square a lot as a research participant. Maybe we can find a way to meet up then.”
After that, they went quiet for a moment, more than content with filling their empty stomachs. Did she even eat more than a granola bar that day? Silya had started travelling around dawn and had only made it to Sector V within the past hour.
She didn’t know when Tonix had arrived, but he seemed to be just as invested in his food. Where had he been stationed last again? She thought he was still assigned to the suburbs, and the locals tended to care for most of the Fusion Fighters’ basic needs when possible to do their part for the war effort. Maybe it was partially all of the training keeping him hungry—and the running around on odd jobs for their commanding officers.
When the both of them were halfway through the meal, Tonix asked, “Did you hear that the Morbuckses increased the storage limit at the banks?”
“Already purchased the gold membership.” As if slighted by her own, small confession, Silya ripped a hunk of bread off with her teeth. As much as she hated giving into the overall snobby family, they’d pretty much monopolized the banks—probably because there was nothing else compared to their systems. Honestly though, she was desperate. She’d made quiet a collection of armor, weapons, and data files during her travels as an independent agent: It was easier for her to bite the bullet and buy the extra space than to give up on what she’d earned.
He chuckled a bit at her short response, “This is what happens when someone wants every sword they find. Don’t you use a shattergun most of the time anyway?”
“Keep my Scottish Claymore and Scythe Jr. out of this.”
Laughing again, he just shrugged, “Well, the Morbuckses aside, let’s take it as a good sign that the banks are growing. Maybe it means that things are finally beginning to get back to normal.” Tonix picked up his glass thoughtfully, then raised it toward her in a small toast, “To taking back our planet!”
Silya’s grin returned. She mimicked the gesture, clanking her cup against his, and recited a familiar line known to all of the soldiers, “Down with Fuse!”
((Hey, guys! If you made it this far, thanks for reading. This piece included a buddy of mine, @tonixman. Thanks so much again for letting me include your character! :) ))

A neural network invents some pies
(Pie -> cat courtesy of https://affinelayer.com/pixsrv/ )
I work with neural networks, which are a type of machine learning computer program that learn by looking at examples. They’re used for all sorts of serious applications, like facial recognition and ad targeting and language translation. I, however, give them silly datasets and ask them to do their best.
So, for my latest experiment, I collected the titles of 2237 sweet and savory pie recipes from a variety of sources including Wikipedia and David Shields. I simply gave them to a neural network with no explanation (I never give it an explanation) and asked it to try to generate more.
Its very first attempt left something to be desired, but it had figured out that "P”, “i”, and “e” were important somehow.
e Piee i m t iee ic ic Pa ePeeetae a e eee ema iPPeaia eieer i i i ie e eciie Pe eaei a
Second checkpoint. Progress: Pie.
Pie Pee Pie Pimi Pie Pim Cue Pie Pie (er Wie Pae Pim Piu Pie Pim Piea Cre Pia Pie Pim Pim Pie Pie Piee Pie Piee
This is expected, since the word “pie” is both simple and by far the most common word in the dataset. It stays in the stage above for rather a while, able to spell only “Pie” and nothing else. It’s like evolution trying to get past the single-celled organism stage. After 4x more time has elapsed, it finally adds a few more words: “apple”, “cream”, and “tart”. Then, at the sixth checkpoint, “pecan”.
Seventh checkpoint: These are definitely pies. We are still working on spelling “strawberry”, however.
Boatin Batan Pie Shrawberry Pie With An Cream Pie Cream Pie Sweesh Pie Ipple Pie Wrasle Cream Pie Swrawberry Pie Cream Pie Sae Fart Tart Cheem Pie Sprawberry Cream Pie Cream Pie
10th checkpoint. Still working.

16th checkpoint. Showing some signs of improvement? Maybe. It thinks Qtrupberscotch is a thing.

Finally we arrive at what, according to the neural network, is Peak Pie. It tracks its own progress by testing itself against the original dataset and scoring itself, and here is where it thinks it did the best.
It did in fact come up with some that might actually work, in a ridiculously-decadent sort of way.
Baked Cream Puff Cake Four Cream Pie Reese's Pecan Pie Fried Cream Pies Eggnog Peach Pie #2 Fried Pumpkin Pie Whopper pie Rice Krispie-Chiffon Pie Apple Pie With Fudge Treats Marshmallow Squash Pie Pumpkin Pie with Caramelized Pie Butter Pie
But these don’t sound very good actually.

And I have no what these are:
Stramberiy Cheese Pie The pon Pie Dississippi Mish Boopie Crust Liger Strudel Free pie Sneak Pie Tear pie Basic France Pie Baked Trance pie Shepherd's Finger Tart Buster's Fib Lemon Pie Worf Butterscotch Pie Scent Whoopie Grand Prize Winning I*iple Cromberry Yas Law-Ox Strudel Surf Pie, Blue Ulter Pie - Pitzon's Flangerson's Blusty Tart Fresh Pour Pie Mur's Tartless Tart
More of the neural network’s attempts to understand what humans like to eat:
Perhaps my favorite: Small Sandwiches
All my other neural network recipe experiments here.
Want more than that? I’ve got a bunch more recipes that I couldn’t fit in this post. Become a supporter of AI Weirdness to get more selected recipes as bonus content.
Want to help with neural network experiments? For NaNoWriMo I’m crowdsourcing a dataset of novel first lines, after the neural network had trouble with a too-small dataset. Go to this form (no email necessary) and enter the first line of your novel, or your favorite novel, or of every novel on your bookshelf. You can enter as many as you like. At the end of the month, I’ll hopefully have enough sentences to give this another try.

25, 21, 18, 15 for end of the year asks!
Hey Kira! thx for the ask! Hope you’re having a good day!15. What’s a bad habit you picked up this year?
Falling asleep unplanned, usually around dinner (5.pm or so) and waking up 2 hours later, refreshed, but disoriented. It started during October and got worse this month (._.)
18. A memorable meal this year?A friend of mine, R. was alone for a week because their parents were away, and didn’t wish to eat alone all the time. So they invited me and another friend to cook and eat. We made stew and rice, and strudel filled with apples and red bean paste. It was an amazing meal! Light conversation, watching videos (figure skating and Most dissatisfying videos, of all things)The funniest thing was when we were making the strudel, we successfully rolled it, only to discover that we did not put the apples in hahaha. (Me: ”That is why it was so easy to roll!”)
21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?I took off some posters because they did not really match the interior. More plushies have joined my collection, and all my available shelf space is gone!
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe oneUnfortunately, I don’t do that anymore. I have some ideas jotted down, but they stayed that way, either because I did not have the time or just completely forgot about them!

Chapter Seven: Rain
All Because Of A Car Cinder’s life revolved around the garage, working as a mechanic, until that one male student came in looking for a Mercedes and changed her life… AU AH Kaider story. Enjoy!
As it turns out, she doesn't get to know what Apple Strudel is.
Kai looks like he's about to bang his head on the wall when they get to the restaurant and find out it's suddenly closed for maintenance. He worries his lip, shifting from side to side as if expecting the ground to eat him as punishment for a slightly awkward situation.
Cinder just laughs. "How about we just go and grab a coffee?"
Kai nods. "Sure, as long as it's not black."
Cinder actually stops walking, wondering how on earth someone can survive without drinking a black coffee every morning. Apparently, she hadn't wondered silently because Kai looks slightly surprised before saying, "With a surprising amount of ease."
"Oh… I didn't mean to…" Cinder groans to herself.
Kai chuckles lightly, "It's okay, I'm not offended."
Relieved that she hadn't insulted the first boy who'd tried to show her a new food on a pretty much official date, Cinder nods and the two of them start walking along the strangely empty path.
"I take it you're a coffee fan then?" Kai asks unnecessarily.
"I take it you're not?"
"I did tell you exactly that back at the workshop," Kai retorts.
Cinder grins, glad that he didn't just shrug and walk away. If there's anything to appreciate in someone who would ask you to fly a kite with them, it's the ability to carry a conversation no matter how close to being rude it becomes.
"Touché, kite boy." Cinder mock salutes.
"Kite boy?" Kai echoes, "Really, Princess?"
Cinder opens her mouth to make a sarcastic remark but she's foiled by the pink that spreads across her face and the small smile playing at her lips.
"Wait, we're here already?" Kai asks incredulously as they reach a café.
"Well, this is a café…"
"I'm not going mad, I don't work at this one. I wasn't aware that there were two such cafés." Kai pushes the door open anyway, gesturing for Cinder to go in before him.
She rolls her eyes but smiles anyway, slipping into the warmth of the small café and letting Kai close the door behind them before starting to walk towards the counter. The place is fairly empty, so she can feel everyone there watching them as they quickly order two cappuccinos, only because they have no idea what they serve here and that seems like the easiest option.
As the two of them settle at the corner table, Cinder exhales, "I hate nosy people."
Kai raises an eyebrow. "Who's being nosy?"
Cinder gestures to the people who'd gone back to their drinks only when the two of them had sat down.
"You'd hate living in my house then," Kai says casually, then pauses, as if wondering why he'd said that.
"Why?" Cinder asks slowly.
Kai shrugs. "My dad… is rather famous… with certain people. We often have company."
Cinder nods even though she doesn't quite get it.
"Two cappuccinos?" the barista calls, apparently too lazy to bring them their drinks.
Kai chuckles and gets up to go collect them, almost tripping over a chair on the journey back. The woman nearest to him chuckles, but it's unkind and judgmental, which for some reason sparks a rage inside of Cinder, one that she wasn't aware she was capable of.
"Are you good?" Cinder asks, taking the drinks from him so they don't spill.
Kai nods, sheepishly clearing his throat. "I'm usually a little more charming than that."
"Oh, charming is overrated-" Cinder bites her lip as she tries to think of something that doesn't sound too awkward- "haven't you heard that kites are the new best thing?"
She takes a small sip of her coffee as Kai beams widely, his eyes somehow brightening. The two of them sip their drinks in unison, Kai making a face and Cinder sighing with relief as the warm liquid eases itself down her throat.
"Why are you drinking it if you don't like it?" Cinder asks, trying her best not to laugh.
"I just-" he makes a face- "feel rude if I-" he blinks awkwardly- "order and then don't drink."
Cinder almost spits out her mouthful of coffee as she watches Kai struggle with his sentence. She does immediately feel bad, but it's too late to stop herself from half coughing – something that's quite embarrassing even if Kai does make an effort to not notice.
"It's raining!" Kai declares excitedly.
Cinder's never seen someone's face light up so quickly, and she's not sure why he's so excited; it's just rain.
"Okay?" she tries her best not to sound sarcastic.
Kai's face falls a little but he smiles. "I just like the rain."
"Why?" she asks curiously; she genuinely does want to know why anyone would like the rain so much that they can forget about coffee.
Kai waits for a few seconds before shrugging his shoulders as he shoots her a lopsided grin. "I've spent a lot of time with the rain. We're good friends."
Luckily, they'd both finished with their drinks so it's not a calamity when Cinder stands up and pulls Kai with her. She's not even sure why she does it to be honest, she just feels this urge to make Kai smile and to make his crestfallen look vanish.
Kai almost stumbles as Cinder swerves to dump her cup in the bin – and of course allow him to do the same – but he regains his balance by the time they reach the door, ignoring the strange looks they're receiving because they value each other over some random opinionated strangers.
"You ready, kite boy?" Cinder asks, smirking.
"Anytime, Princess." Kai mimics her tone and she grins, pushing the door open.
Almost immediately, they're hit with a blast of cool breeze and wayward rain. Neither of them are particularly bothered, grinning and stepping into the outside as they share an excited glance.
Kai's running before Cinder can blink, and she's joining him before she can think. The two of them race along the cobbled path, laughing as they twirl under the rain and occasionally crash into each other.
Of course Cinder slips.
Of course she has to be the one to lose her balance in the middle of a laugh. Her shoes slide on the path, through a puddle, and send her flying towards the floor. She would have hit the ground too, had it not been for Kai's reflexes and his hand grabbing her wrist.
"Alright, Princess?" Kai has to half-shout over the pounding rain, and Cinder can still barely hear him over the pounding of her heart.
Whether her heart is racing because she'd almost fallen or because Kai's hands are surprisingly warm on her skin, she can't tell. What she can tell is that the shine in Kai's copper eyes and the way his dimples deepen when she nods are worth the risk of a concussion.
Then, as she lets herself be pulled upright, blinking the rain away from her eyes and watching as Kai tries to push his fringe back so that he can see, Cinder realises that Kai's hand has slipped into hers.
Strangely, she doesn't mind.
Kai opens his mouth – to apologise, she can tell – but Cinder just tightens her grip and smiles softly, watching the way he shyly grins back and loving the way his fingers interlock with hers.
Despite the thudding of rain on cobbled road and despite the wind fiercely raging around them, Cinder can still hear the exhilaration radiating from Kai. She can feel the adrenaline surging in her veins and there's something else, something she can't pinpoint, something she's never quite felt before.
"Ready for round two?" Kai asks softly, Cinder having to simultaneously read his lips to make sure she hears him right.
"Oh, you bet." She grins.
The two of them set off once again, practically giggling as they swing their arms like toddlers and jump into puddles like crazed children, neither of them caring about maturity.
She has to push her hair away from her face when Kai splashes her and she gasps in mock horror, smirking as she kicks water at him in revenge. He laughs and yelps at the same time, closing his eyes as he attempts to dodge. It becomes a routine, to try and drench each other with puddle rain.
By the time the sun's fully set and they're both half cloaked in darkness, they're truly exhausted, giggling childishly. And because Kai had insisted that he walk Cinder home, the two of them lean against her front gate as they recover.
"Thank you," Kai whispers breathlessly.
"What for?" Cinder asks, frowning.
"Letting the rain join our parade."
Cinder laughs, finally unlacing their fingers as she ties her hair up, trying to figure out how she'll explain this one.
"I wouldn't want it any other way," she promises, having to raise her voice over the rain.
She bites her lip as she turns to the front door, feeling bad for Kai, who has to walk all the way home in the pouring rain.
"It's okay, I like the rain," Kai tells her, as if reading her mind.
"Did I say that out loud?" Cinder asks, unsure of whether or not she's going crazy.
"What, you don't think I'm capable of reading expressions?" From anyone else's mouth, it would sound obnoxious and haughty, but Kai's soft smile makes it seem endearing and gentle.
Cinder smiles, wishing more than anything that she could invite him in, but she doesn't want to expose her only friend to Adri and Pearl, knowing that it won't end well. So she simply waves and watches as Kai bows before breaking into a run.
She steps inside with an insanely bright smile on her face, a literal spring in her step, and Kai's laugh echoing in her ears.
She's happy, she realises with a jolt; she's actually happy.

Guten Tag Berlin!
A few weeks ago I made my last international trip of the semester to Berlin, Germany. This was a trip I was particularly looking forward to because of the deep and harrowing recent history of the country. This was trip was organized by my university and so it was educational based which was exactly what I wanted for my visit to Germany.
On Friday, April 14, I made my way to Gatwick, hopped on a plane without any delays (yay!) and got to Berlin. The first thing I realized was that I was not at all prepared for the weather. I knew that it was going to be rainy that weekend, so I remembered my umbrella, but I wasn’t expecting how chilly it would be in mid-April. The highest temperature for every day was 40°F and all I had was a light peacoat. But I refused to let the cold weather keep me from enjoying the city and although I got severely ill the following week, I’m glad I used my limited time in Berlin to explore.
After checking into our hostel we went on a guided walking tour around Berlin and I quickly realized just how much history was packed into every corner of this city. Our first stop was the Altes Museum where our tour guide showed us photos of what the square - packed with tourists sitting and enjoying the sun today - looked like during Nazi occupation. I’ve included the before and after shot below because I found it so shocking how little has physically changed.
Later in the tour we saw the famous Brandenburg Gate, The Book Burning Memorial, Point Charlie and of course the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. This memorial is a forest of concrete pillars (2711 to be exact) that get taller and more imposing the further you walk into to the maze. Watching the city disappear as I walked deeper into the memorial was disorientating and erie. The memorial did not sentimentalize the Holocaust, instead it seemed to symbolize how something small can quickly turn into something large, dark and dangerous. It was a harrowing visual depiction of the incremental decisions that collectively led to horrors of the Holocaust.
On a lighter note, our tour guide told us the history behind Ampelmann -- the traffic light men used in East Germany and East Berlin. Basically, during the communist reign, East Germany had a different symbol for its traffic lights - a green and red man wearing a hat - while West Germany had the traditional human figure. After the Iron curtain fell and Germany was unified, many things in East Germany were done away with, but the residents loved ampelmann so much that he was kept and he has now become quite popular throughout Germany. I absolutely loved learning about this quirky piece of history.
After the tour my friends and I scouted out some traditional German apple strudel and grabbed dinner at a literal hole-in-the-wall pub that strictly served german food. So for dinner I had a bauernfrühstück (farmer’s breakfast) and a glass of riesling.
We woke up bright and early Saturday to catch four separate trains to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. I knew that if I visited Germany during my semester abroad I wanted to got to a concentration camp so I greatly appreciated that the university was able to pull this together. Sachsenhausen was mostly a labor camp where many male political prisoners were sent such as politicians, scholars, communists and lawyers. This visit was an eye-opening and deeply emotional experience. It is one thing to hear and read about what life was like in concentration camps, but it’s far more disturbing to see the barracks, bathrooms, and prisons in person. A lot of the original structures were gone, but we were able to gain a sense of how horrible the conditions were and how cruelly the prisoners were treated. The most harrowing part of the camp was the small gas chamber at the end of the camp labeled ‘station-Z.’ At the end of the tour visitor are encouraged to leave notes on a wall, and one said “think of Syria” written in a child’s handwriting. It was a stark reminder of just how fragile our lives are and how easily history can repeat itself.
Sunday was our final day in Germany, and the first day that it wasn’t raining. This was good because we began the day with claiming the dome in the Reichstag building. I’m not usually a huge fan of audio-guides, but this one gave a great overview of Germany’s Parliament and all the sights you can see along the climb. So much of this trip was spent learning about Germany’s deep history that it was refreshing to hear about present day Germany and get a sense of how it has rebuilt itself and paved a strong path into the 21st century.
In the afternoon my friends and I headed to the East Side Gallery where a strip of the Berlin Wall was kept and converted into a memorial for freedom. The plain grey walls were painted over with easily a hundred different memorials expressing hope, peace and freedom for all. It was great getting to spend 20 minutes walking along the wall and admiring all of the artwork.
Berlin was an eye-opening, emotional and informative trip and I’m so glad that I learned so much on my final journey of the semester. Exploring different cities, experiencing different cultures and learning about each country’s history has allowed me to grow and gain so much understanding for everything and everyone around me. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to visit 5 countries beyond England during my semester abroad and no words can describe how much each trip meant to me. I only have a few days left in London and I’m beginning to realize how difficult it is going to be to go from living in a big city, where the world is at your finger tips, to a tiny U.S. suburban town. But until then, I’ll be running around Piccadilly, Kensington and all of London’s other great neighborhoods and parks!
Cheers,
Sara
