What picture does your muse(s) have as their phone’s lock screen?
his lock screen is a blank black wallpaper; some strange notion of privacy, in case it accidentally ends up in a stranger's hands.
in most cases, his background screen will feature a casual snap of his daughter octavia, the rotten apple of his crimson eye, the sublime terror of his grim heart.
if / when she refuses to have a picture taken, he'll use an older picture of her as a toddler-chick or even take one of a portrait.
otherwise he likes to have generic stock pictures of starry nights and / or galaxies.

Commercial arsenic mining!
Wallpaper/textile designer William Morris actually owned stock in an arsenic mine, and therefore dismissed concerns about arsenic poisoning from wallpaper pigment as “witch fever.”
I don’t believe anyone sourced it from apple seeds
I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but:
- arsenic dye was used to make multiple shades of green in the 18th/19th centuries
- green dyes without arsenic were also still in common use
- consumer outcry against arsenic dye started as early as the 1860s, with many manufacturers beginning to phase it out around that time due to customer demand
- arsenic – dyed clothing is not likely to do more to the wearer than cause a skin rash. The majority of deaths from exposure to the dye were caused by other, more concentrated sources, and/or among workers exposed to large quantities of the pigment on a daily basis rather than consumers
- IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL IF A GREEN ANTIQUE GARMENT IS DYED WITH ARSENIC WITHOUT CHEMICAL TESTING. There is NO telltale quality visible to the naked eye that I am aware of

Beautiful Mecca Pictures | Makkah wallpapers Download
Mecca, also known as Makkah, is one of the most revered cities in the Islamic world. Located in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia, it is the spiritual heart of Islam and holds immense significance for Muslims around the globe. Situated about 70 kilometers (43 miles) inland from the port city of Jeddah, Mecca rests at an elevation of 277 meters (909 feet) above sea level in a valley surrounded by mountains.
As the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the site of the Kaaba, the holiest structure in Islam, Mecca attracts millions of visitors annually. Its population was estimated at around 2 million in 2012, but during the Hajj season, which takes place in the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Dhu al-Hijjah, the number of people in the city can more than triple. This pilgrimage, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, sees Muslims from all corners of the world converge on Mecca to seek forgiveness and perform sacred rituals.
In this sacred city, only Muslims are allowed to enter. Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering the city, as it is dedicated exclusively to religious practices and spiritual devotion. The restrictions are intended to preserve the sanctity of the environment where Muslims engage in prayer, perform Umrah, and undertake other Islamic rituals.
For those who cherish the beauty and sanctity of Mecca, there is a wealth of high-quality images and wallpapers available that capture the essence of this holy city. Whether for personal inspiration or for sharing with others, these images provide a glimpse into the spiritual and architectural grandeur of Mecca. Here’s a guide to finding and downloading beautiful Mecca wallpapers and images.
Sources for Beautiful Mecca Wallpapers
Islamic Wallpaper Websites:
There are many websites dedicated to Islamic art and religious themes that offer a range of Mecca wallpapers. Sites such as Islamic Wallpaper HD frequently update their collections with new images of Masjid Al-Haram and the Kaaba. Searching for terms like “Makkah HD Wallpapers” or “Masjid Al-Haram Wallpapers” on these sites will yield high-resolution images suitable for desktops and mobile devices.
Stock Photo Sites:
Platforms like Shutterstock and Adobe Stock offer professional-quality images of Mecca. These stock photo sites provide a variety of images, from panoramic views of the Grand Mosque to detailed shots of the Kaaba, all available for purchase or download. These sites are ideal for those seeking high-resolution images for print or digital use.
Mobile Apps:
For mobile users, there are several apps available that specialize in Islamic and religious wallpapers. On the Google Play Store, apps such as “Islamic Wallpapers” or “Mecca Live Wallpaper” provide a range of static and live wallpapers featuring Mecca. Similarly, the Apple App Store offers a variety of apps that cater to iOS users. These apps often feature customizable options, allowing users to set live wallpapers of Mecca’s Grand Mosque or the Kaaba.
Social Media and Photo Sharing:
Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are valuable resources for discovering beautiful Mecca images. On Instagram, hashtags such as #Makkah and #Mecca allow users to explore stunning photos shared by travelers and photographers. Pinterest, on the other hand, offers curated boards filled with high-quality Mecca images that can be saved or downloaded for personal use.
Official Websites and Blogs:
Official tourism websites and Islamic blogs often feature high-quality images of Mecca. Websites run by Saudi tourism authorities or religious organizations may provide galleries of Mecca’s landmarks, including the Grand Mosque and its surroundings. Islamic blogs and forums can also be a source of beautiful Mecca images, often accompanied by detailed descriptions and historical context.
Types of Mecca Images to Look For
Masjid Al-Haram: The Grand Mosque, encompassing the Kaaba, is a focal point for many Mecca images. Look for pictures that capture the grandeur of the mosque, both from afar and close-up. These images often showcase the intricate details of the mosque’s architecture and the bustling activity of pilgrims.
Kaaba: As the holiest site in Islam, images of the Kaaba are highly sought after. Whether it’s a panoramic view during the Hajj or a serene shot during off-peak times, these images highlight the spiritual significance and beauty of this sacred structure.
Mecca Skyline: Pictures of Mecca’s skyline can offer a broader perspective of the city, including modern skyscrapers and the surrounding landscape. These images often provide a contrast between the ancient religious sites and the contemporary urban environment.
Tips for Downloading Mecca Images
Quality and Resolution: Ensure that the images you download are of high resolution and quality. This is especially important if you plan to use them for printing or high-definition displays.
Source Verification: Download images from reputable sources to ensure that you are getting authentic and high-quality content. Be cautious of sites that offer low-resolution or watermarked images.
Respect Intellectual Property: When using images, especially those found on social media or photography sites, be mindful of copyright and intellectual property rights. Use images according to their terms of use, and where possible, credit the photographers or sources.
In conclusion, finding and downloading beautiful wallpapers and images of Mecca can provide inspiration and a deep connection to this sacred city. Whether for personal use or sharing with others, high-quality images of Mecca offer a window into the spiritual and architectural wonders of one of Islam’s most revered locations.

Luxury Gym Equipment
One of the greatest pleasures in life is being able to afford beautiful things. Are you more interested in art or luxury watches or cars? But what about high-end exercise gear? Is there such a thing as decadence? Naturally, it does! Additionally, if you're an avid fitness enthusiast with the means to upgrade your gym's aesthetic, this shopping list could be the highlight of your year.
DUMBBELLS
Luxury gym equipment isn’t just the inclusion of a big price tag; the design is essential. These Hock Loft Dumbbell rack are another delightful example of what can be created using wood and steel. More industrial looking than the Pent Lova Kettlebells, these weights are made using polished and oiled nutwood and come with their own rack made from finely ground oiled solid walnut. They are available in a number of different sets from three to five weights weighing between 1kg and 6kg. These are most suitable for light weight training and are perfect for muscle strengthening and toning.
ROWING MACHINE:
Rowing machine is a fantastic activity, and the WaterRower S1 will provide you with a luxurious, stainless steel workout. Crafted in Germany, this apparatus exemplifies the skill of the renowned collaboration between Water rowing machine & NOHrD. The S1 rowing machine, like all of their models, features a proprietary "water wheel" that provides natural resistance that gets stronger the faster you row. With workout programs that can be adjusted by time, distance, or distance intervals, as well as statistics on your speed, distance, and stroke rate, the S4 Performance monitor will keep you informed about your progress.
Technogym Run Personal-Treadmills
This elegantly proportioned device skillfully blends design and utility. The high-end home treadmill from Technogym is not only gorgeous to look at, but it also has unmatched quality and technology. The largest touchscreen available for HD viewing is seen on the UNITY console. The high-tech screen is 19 inches wide and composed of toughened glass. There are countless entertainment options available to consumers, along with a wide selection of well-known apps like Facebook and Netflix. Even more entertainment options on the Technogym UNITY console include a selection of games and the option to make Skype calls while working out! Technogym wellness keys, smartphones, or Apple watches can be used to log into the console and track workouts. Fitness tech enthusiasts can also observe progress.
MULTIGYM: NOHrD Slimbeam
Versatility is a crucial feature to search for in your machines when choosing upscale exercise equipment. You've probably got color schemes in mind if you're spending this much money on your gym, and generic stock colors won't do. Step forth, NOHrD Slimbeam. In addition to looking like a work of art in and of itself, this multi-gym may be customized in any color. Some people want their gold leaf wallpaper to contrast with their gym equipment, while others want it to match their drapes. Regardless of your preferences, Slimbeam allows you to easily match your home style.
KETTLEBELLS
There is no need to introduce the Pent Lova Kettlebells. These weight sets are the height of elegance, made of stainless steel and wood, and they will definitely add a little more flair to your swings. They come in four different wood types: walnut, sycamore, oak, and elm, since you should never be stuck with only one choice. All that's left to do is decide whether you want something airy and cheerful or gloomy and enigmatic.
Depending on the necessary weight, there are two sets of these kettlebells available. The four kg, six kg, eight kg, and ten kg kettlebells make up the "light" set. However, weights of 8 kg, 12 kg, 16 kg, and 20 kg are included in the "medium." Additionally, both include the exquisitely designed Pent rack.

40 years of the Mac and why I can’t use anything else now
By the time I was buying my first Apple Macintosh computer the launch of the Mac in 1984 was already a myth, a story shared from one nerd to another, like an Aboriginal Australian cave painting.
In grade five there was an Apple IIe at the back of the classroom no-one knew how to use but when I realised that the computer magazines at the library full of computer programs and games written in Basic contained not just ideas and lines of code - yes, actual real code just printed in paper magazines - but code I could type into an Apple computer, execute, and then enjoy, I was hooked.
I kept on reading those computer magazines like APCMag, PC User, PCMag, Macuser, Mac Format, and countless others whose names escape me but the school library stocked so generously.
At one stage I designed on paper my dream computer which would triple-boot Microsoft Windows, OS/2 Warp, and Mac OS System 8. I think a “Mac on a PCI card” product had been released, or the opposite for inserting in a Mac, so I designed my Frankenstein’s monster of a computer and presented it to class imagining that they would a) care, and b) be in awe of my product design and computer engineering. Alas neither Steve Jobs or Bill Gates wrote and congratulated me.
I’m not sure how I wrangled it, but somehow our family acquired a Packard Bell IBM-compatible personal computer with a 486 SX 25/33 processor, 4MB of RAM, no sound card, but it did come with Windows 3.11.
The Radio Rentals rented computer and I quickly became close friends but somehow with its 25MHz CPU and 4MB of RAM the computer ran slower than a slug chasing down an ice cream truck.
Enter, my Uncle Grant.
Uncle Grant was my super uncle from Townsville who sold and serviced Apple computers. We’d not been on friendly talking terms about computers since I used his Apple Macintosh and neglected to save a document he had open, but he was quick to diagnose the problem with my computer’s speed: I had an image as my desktop wallpaper. Also, he was quick to quip that “a Mac wouldn’t have that problem.”
What he neglected to acknowledge is that a Withers didn’t have a spare buck either so we went without a Mac for about a decade more.
As I’m sure is the story for most modern Mac users, having your own personal Macintosh Desktop Experience was a dream for too long.
Years later Apple announced the Intel transition from Power PC chipsets and all of a sudden, thanks to an Intel Inside and Bootcamp, these new Macs can run Windows and Mac OS X which is the perfect justification for a nerd to make for a new Apple MacBook purchase.
All white and plastic, it was beautiful, and that new Apple MacBook never needed to be tainted by Bootcamp and Windows. It turned out that Mac OS is actually quite capable on its own.
Not quite as beautiful as that G3 iMac I acquired years after it was ever useful, but always be beautiful.
And that’s why I can’t use any other OS today. I’ve tried Windows and Linux of late, I’m always open to a change so I know I’m using the best tools for the job, but my taste gravitates to the Mac. It is beautiful, useful, and just plain nice. I’ve even tried the iPad as a main computer, or the phone. But it’ll always be the Mac for me. Happy birthday, and hello, old friend.

I really lose a lot of detail when focusing on the narrative in my dreams. Like in explaining whats going on I can't impart the sheer amount of environmental and other data I also get.
So below I'm going to expand on a few points.
1) The house and the girl's room.
The house is a huge structure, similar in style to those mexican courtyard homes but with the design sense of the interior of an older japanese style home with the tatami. Like the materials are normal for the mexican home but it's all in greens and browns and whites that you'd find there. The interior courtyard is enclosed and forms the main gathering area of the home. Other than the north wall, the others have doorways leading into rooms or stairs to the upper floors.
I led the girl up those stairs and we saw the second door was lit but not the first. So I pushed open the green door to give her a room. The room is a large space and unlike the rest of the house it has wood paneling on the bottom half of the walls and some kind of boring brown floral wallpaper on the top. Everything about the room implies that it's antique. Even the furniture in there- which is just a huge L-shaped couch structure in multiple pieces is old. The couch has woodworked floral designs in dark wood. Upholstery on it is some kind of off golden-brown with flowers in dark brown thread but highlighted with metallic thread on the petals and leaves. Shiny in a old kind of way.
I had to move one of the pieces off so she could sleep on either of the other two. The room also had a balcony which I used some tall fake plants that were also in the room to stop the cats from hopping to her neighbours balcony.
Along with the main area of the room there was a small alcove where one would probably have a bathroom ina. real suite but its just another empty dusty area in the dream.
2) The androids and their master.
Imagine the androids from DBZ. They're like that. There's 3 of them. Two look like girls and the main fighter is the 'guy'. Their master is discount King Kai but also somehow the guy in harvest moon who sells you super mega awesome delicious apples.
3) The Flea market.
The market itself covers a wide area and when I was calling it a maze I wasn't kidding. It's in a large dirt field at the edge of the city but for all intents and purposes- it's the heart pf the city. Anything thats anything goes down here. Despite looking like it's an easily abandoned flat, the market doesn't ever move from this spot as the underground buildings are an important part of it's lifeblood. From warehouses to arenas. What isn't dirt packed by the efforts of many is mosiac tile throughout the place. Forming paths to those that can decipher it's patterns or confusing those who can't, the mosiac is a masterpiece of small tile. The 'silhouettes' that distracted the vampires were part of a decoration in the courtyard of one such tiled area. It's unknown who accomplished sich a thing.
The booths are all ramshackle though, leading to the feeling of temporary space. Like they could just move. From the hat guy's wireframe set up to easily collapsible shelves to the one whose shop is just wood beams and walls upon walls of carpet. They'll sell you anything here.
4) The Hat Guy's booth
Just as I said it's all that wireframe made into walls and a ceiling. Hats are hanging from each available space and a counter made from bricks and a shelf is toward the back. It's a wide rectangular space just off the mosaic path with a hall leading to the backstock area to the right. It's one of the main entrances to the arena and specifically the one for special services like vampire feeding
I don't know how it works but there is a certain part of the roof where if you peek up through god's ugliest satin headbands you can see some of the bodybags. This is how they keep stock. Don't ask how they're preserved somehow. It's dream logic.
5) The question I'm sure you've all been burning for- what is a communist fighting arena?
Everyone in the dream called it that. It was never actually just fighting ring or arena it was always 'Communist fighting arena'.
The building is underground and used to be a movie theatre it seems. 2 theatres had their walls broken into 1 huge structure and the chairs were set so the middle of the area was clear. The walls were older wood detailing with lamps placed every so often, one still retains a movie screen for announcements. Everything is slightly dusty constantly but you can tell what it once was. The dust feels like more of an alibi than a tell of how frequent this is used.
The floor is wood where it can be, with paths of carpet, and dirt in the actual arena area. Importantly the floor is covered in a bunch of papers stepped into the ground over time. This includes a huge amount of brochures with the red hammer and sickle on them. Hence the communist fighting arena. Rumors say you can get a new copy from the staff or just peel one off the floor to read.
Sadly I didn't get to read one in the dream. I can tell you about their menu though. It's unexplained where exactly the kitchens are but they offer a well printed trifold menu. This lists a number of alcohols, cocktails, oven baked pizzas, burgers, cheese fries, random breakfast items such as shakshuka, and importantly the lemonade section. The back of the menu also listed special sevices such as 'arena companions' for hire, the 'special' bloody mary, and other bits from associated shops.
The communist fighting arena was where I was going to face off with the androids. The plan was to beat the shit out their main fighter until somehow one of the others lured their master into the arena and then I'd kill him instead. Therefore fulfilling the 'one of you has to die' quota of the feud.

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning! I hope your coffee is strong and you’re ready to read some random links? ☕️
The Iconfactory
While this chapter may have ended, our story is not over. We’ll continue improving our other apps, creating new apps, doing amazing design work for our clients, and posting awesome wallpapers to Wallaroo and Patreon.
Tapbots
We have taken everything great about Tweetbot and used it as the starting point for the future of Ivory.
I’ve been posting on this topic for a while now. Musk is a big caca-doodoo-head and shutting down third-party Twitter clients isn’t a good idea. Why? They’re much better than Twitter’s own client.
Twitter should’ve reached out to these tiny app creators and offered to work with them to include advertising in their timeline streams or offered to buy a few of them and turn each app into a unique client for various Twitter endeavors. Like one that specializes in video and one that specializes in news. Something like that. Give folks more options, not fewer. 🫡🐦
By contrast Mastodon, being a completely open platform, is flourishing thanks to third-party clients! There are so many new iOS Apps for Mastodon it’ll make your head spin. Some have been around for years and have seen a resurgence, others are brand new. They give folks options. Variety, the spice of life!
One other very important point to make. Hitching your wagon to a company that can shut off access at any time was a dangerous move. These indie devs knew what they were doing, but it doesn’t hurt them any less.
I’ve been switching between three very good clients; Toot!, Ivory (beta), and Ice Cubes. Each have something about them I really enjoy, but there are so many more just waiting in the wings.
Also, Musk is failing in many ways. Twitter is a mess and Tesla stock is plummeting. I’m surprised Tesla Board hasn’t fired him. 🔥
Salon
So maybe it’s surprising that any defense attorneys for the Proud Boys have said anything coherent, let alone incisive. Yet right there in the opening arguments, Sabino Jauregui, who is defending Tarrio, went straight at the prosecution’s weak spot: The government is putting the insurrection’s foot soldiers on trial, while leaving the man who led and directed them, Donald Trump, not just untouched by the law but running for president again. (Supposedly.)
To this I say “Duh!” Yes, that slimeball TFG should be in jail.
Here’s hoping Justice is served.
Daring Fireball
The best interfaces to Twitter, on any platforms, were all native apps on the iPhone and Mac. We’re now on the cusp of a new frontier with Mastodon, and it’s Apple’s utterly clueless bureaucratic App Store reviewers who are doing their best to lock the new playground’s gates before they even open.
John is talking about a beautiful, highly functional, Mastodon client called Ice Cubes. The Apple App Store review process can throw some really weird reasons at folks why they won’t approve an app. Stream was rejected three times because I use the word subscribe in it and they thought I was collecting money and wanted their cut. They insisted I use in app purchase for subscriptions. 😵💫
Short story long, Ice Cubes was finally approved and I honestly believe someone at Apple read John’s piece and fixed the situation. 💪🏼
stitcher.io
From its humble beginnings as a personal project in the mid-90s, PHP has grown to become one of the most popular languages for web development, powering everything from small blogs to large enterprise applications.
I know what you’re gonna say, PHP is garbage. I don’t think so. It’s been used for years and years and while some folks may find it strange I think it’s a much better language than JavaScript and it continues to improve.
Ars Technica
Legislators of the nation’s least-populous state are taking a brave stand against modernity and climate action. They’re sponsoring SJ0004, “Phasing out new electric vehicle sales by 2035,” an uncomplicated bill that expresses the state’s goal to phase out sales of new EVs by 2035 and asks Wyoming’s industries and citizens to do their civic duty in resisting the EV.
These folks are just ridiculous. When the world becomes so difficult to live in they’ll all ask “What caused this.” We all know what’s causing it. Us, continuing to do things we know are destroying the planet.
Dave Rogers
But I’m conscious of the fact that what I’m doing involves writing; and I have two fears when I’m doing this, neither of which has had the good effect of compelling me to stop. I’m afraid that I’m writing badly, and I’m afraid that it’s boring.
I love reading Dave’s stuff, always have. Like Dave I started my weblog to become a better writer. It hasn’t worked but I still enjoy doing it. Keep up the good work Dave!
Support Indie Developers. That’s it, that’s the commentary.
Sam Soffes
This year was a unique year. I started the year without a job or a place to live. My house in San Francisco just sold, so I had house money in my checking account. Now what?
Great read from Sam. I’d love to become a nomad, traveling the country with Kim and our animal family in a big RV. Yes, id like to make it our full time home!
Anywho, Sam talks about his year of Van Life and it sounds so exciting.
Maybe someday.🤞🏼
Dave Rupert
So you want to make a new JS framework
Web development is still way too difficult. In 2011 I realized most of it boils down to DevOps, not the code so much. We could write, debug, and test code locally but were at the mercy of how the network was configured to make it scale. Yes, we found and fixed bottlenecks in code as we went along, but the DevOps folks were the real heroes.
Go read what Mr. Rupert outlines in his post. It’s ridiculous it takes that much to publish a new JavaScript framework.
Also, why are folks still making new JavaScript frameworks? 🤔
Variety
Regal Cinemas, the second-largest chain of movie theaters in the U.S., will close 39 locations after its parent company Cineworld filed for bankruptcy in September, according to legal filings obtained by Variety.
I love seeing movies on the big screen, always have, but the new realities of COVID-19 have made me a very cautious person. I’ve seen two movies in theaters since the pandemic hit, both at very quiet times for a theatre.
It is sad to see our Charlottesville Regal hit by the closures. It is a really nice theatre.

I think one of the difficulties with fractals (in a general Art sense, not just the specifics of one website's extremely limited user interface) is that they don't fit well into any of the obvious categories. They're clearly not drawing, collage, or photography. They kind of might be graphic design, although I have a vague sense that graphic design is expected to include typography. They could almost count as painting, in the same sense that arranging pixels in a pleasing fashion using Photoshop counts as painting.
If I consider the long history of Decorative Arts, though, fractals settle in quite nicely. If I were uploading reproductions of tile mosaics, or block-printed wallpaper, or jacquard-woven fabrics, I could plop them into the Photography category, but that would be missing the point.
The point, I guess, is that human beings have done a lot of things, over the years, to make mundane and practical objects look prettier, and our current culture seems reluctant to admit to that. We're surrounded by sleek, featureless little rectangles "designed by Apple in California" and they are considered the height of aesthetics in many circles.
Except that real human beings tend to put stickers all over them, or mark them in various ways, both to distinguish our own rectangles from everybody else's identical ones, and to make them look more interesting. Besides which, they get marks and scars and scratches and chips from being carried and jostled and dropped and used, because they're not merely things in a stock photo, they're tools we carry with us and make part of our lives.
And so I keep on making fractals, because I like how they look, and then I want to stick them on my boring things, to make them less boring. And I keep running up against a culture that wants to think of Art as important and good, but Decoration as some kind of unnecessary appendage that we should have evolved away from by now.
uploading a new listing to Society6 like ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

Fix’er Upper Pt. 1
Pairing: Frankie “Catfish” Morales x F!Reader
Warnings: Mentions of past abusive relationship
Length: 1.4k
Notes: Okay, here we go! Giving our babe Frankie an ending he deserves, with a few bumps along the way for fun. Divider by @firefly-graphics 💛
It was almost comical, you thought, at how different the realtor's listing was, compared to the real thing. You’d seen it enough times in bad Hallmark romances: city girl buys a property, property is falling apart, city girl miraculously has the funds to fix it up with the help of the perfect farmer neighbour.
This was reality though and you had already poured your life’s savings, which amounted to very little after all the surprise debts had been paid off, into this farmhouse.
The "Quaint New England farmhouse, filled with the patina of a bygone era" was a wreck. Nothing to be done about it now, though. The crumbling two-story, just a few minutes drive from the small Vermont town, hadn’t been occupied in over a decade and was now in a total state of disrepair.
Swallowing back your tears, feeling the burn behind your eyes and the hot swelling in your throat, you told yourself there wasn’t time for a breakdown. You first needed to take stock of the depth of damage, decide which rooms were habitable enough for the time being, clean, unpack, and prepare yourself for this new life.
The next few hours went by in an exhausting blur. By late evening, there was a larger-than-expected pile of rotten, broken, or otherwise unusable furniture in the driveway; your meager few belongings taking their place. On top of renovations and remodeling it appeared you would also be refurbishing.
Sitting on the porch in the one spot where you felt confident the decking wouldn’t crumble beneath your weight, you looked over your list.
3 cracked windows (can wait?)
no running water in kitchen (ASAP FIX!)
missing shingles (bad??)
deck boards and upstairs bedroom floorboards rotten
carpeted bathroom
questionable smell coming from attic space
peeling wallpaper/paint EVERYWHERE
Folding the list and slipping it into your back pocket, you made your way back inside to discover one last glaring issue, previously unnoticed until now. The electricity had been shut off.
Well, fuck me sideways...
Deciding it was too late and you were too tired to deal with anything else today, you settled for the flashlight on your cellphone for light. Eating the apple you had nicked from the motel lobby the night before, you laid back in your makeshift bed on the floor and gazed around your new home.
Your home.
The first thing you had ever owned on your own.
First, the corner of your mouth quirked up then you quickly allowed it to flourish into a grin. It may be a piece of shit, but then again, you were always attracted to broken things with the innate need to fix them. Maybe this time you’d actually succeed. With that sobering thought, you settled down into your sleeping bag and were quickly asleep.
Frankie couldn’t believe his eyes when he drove past the old McClure farm. Some fool had actually bought it! Chuckling to himself, he could already imagine the gossip that would spread through town tomorrow, everyone clambering to find out who had moved in.
He had moved out this way five years ago and was still considered the “new guy” in town. Hopefully, the new arrival would take that mantle and everyone could start using Frankie’s actual name.
He’ll probably just be dubbed “newer guy”...
Breathing out a huff of a laugh at the thought, Frankie began to turn down his driveway. The long, meandering drive leads to a barn surrounded by rows and rows of apple trees.
Two weeks after having moved in, you’re certain you’ve met, or at least seen, everyone from the town. Muffins, pie, casseroles, and even a case of cider had been brought over by a few of the braver townsfolk who drove out to say hello. While they may have been thinly veiled excuses to come snoop, you couldn’t find it in yourself to complain. The food was delicious, and best of all, it was free.
She had stayed for most of the afternoon, helping you clean and setting her kids about to do menial chores. The eldest, Cole, was sent scurrying up the road to tell his dad to bring Gerta. ... You dared not ask.
The very first visitor was a neighbour from just down the road. “Jacquie,” she had informed you over the noise of her four kids running around the yard, “How do you do?”
She said it with the barest hint of a southern drawl and you instantly fell in love with the soft cadence of her voice. With a beaming smile and a surreptitious wipe of your dusty hand on your pant leg, you shook her hand and introduced yourself.
A short time later, the most devastatingly handsome, all-American-looking man you had ever seen climbed out of a tractor and started carrying a large object towards the house, Cole at his heels.
“Jac, babe, where d’you want her?” He called, voice straining a bit due to the weight in his arms. Smiling at you, he nodded his head in greeting, "Hiya, neighbour! The name’s Mark"
“Oh, I don’t need it,” Jacquie replied airily “I just wanted an excuse to watch your muscles at work.”
With a roll of his eyes, that did nothing to hide the adoring sparkle in them, her husband carried his load to the side of the house and with a thump, set it down.
Turns out that Jacquie had a fondness for naming EVERYTHING and Gerta was their gas-powered generator. Claiming they had no use for it, Gerta was yours to keep for as long as you needed her. Which, you had to be honest, was looking like a good long while. Willing away the tears, not for the last time you were sure, brought on by her kindness, you settled for giving her a bear hug. It wasn’t until you heard a little voice calling “Mama?” that you realized you had been clinging to Jacquie for longer than could ever be considered acceptable.
Pulling away gingerly, you started to apologize, quickly stopped by her hand coming up in front of your face, making you involuntarily flinch.
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry!” She started to exclaim before taking a deeper look at you. Then, without breaking eye contact, she tilted her head to the side and hollered at Mark to gather the kids and head home.
“I’ll be back past bedtime, so come give me y’all kisses now!” She lovingly bossed her brood.
Once they had cleared out, she turned to you, gently taking your hands in hers, and said, “Now, where do you want to start?”
“What kind of voodoo, witch doctor, hippy-dippy magic do you possess?!” you asked with a laugh while sniffing back the lingering tears.
You had just laid out your entire life to a complete stranger. She had sat there, the whole time, holding your hands and your gaze while you had talked. Everything, you had told her absolutely everything. From the California upbringing in an affluential family to marrying your Highschool Sweetheart days after graduation. The sudden move, his surprise enlistment, his changing demeanor, the beginnings of abuse, all ending with his death while stationed overseas.
The pathetic Death Gratuity from the military barely covered the truck. You’d had to sell everything in order to settle all remaining debts. Your parents had offered to move you back home but the thought just made you ashamed. Moving back home? Being seen as a victim, being pitied by those who had seen your potential wasted? No way.
“Nothin’ supernatural, Darlin,” she assured you, after taking a deep breath to steady herself. It appeared that your emotions had started to affect her as well, you noticed with chagrin. “just the power of a good friend and a strong cider.”
Then came the aftermath. The debt collectors, the funeral without a body, his family claiming anything of value and you meekly allowing it, unaccustomed by that point to standing up for yourself. His grooming of you had started so early, and so slightly, that no one had seen it happen. He had controlled every aspect of your lives; it had made you feel like a fool during that first month as a widow. How could you not know about the multiple maxed-out credit cards? The ignored truck payments? The bank loans?!
That comment made you look around and laugh, breaking the morose atmosphere in a flash. Scattered around the two of you were at least a half dozen bottles of the alcoholic beverage, which you had both sipped on during your sad monologue.
“Ahh, so it’s the maker of the drink I’ll have to kiss,” you proclaimed with a laugh. “I just saved a fortune in therapy bills!”
With a sly smile, Jacquie nodded, “That you will, send him my best when you do.”
