Communities where walking is safe and easy are communities where people of all ages and abilities can thrive. That's especially true when it comes to seniors. The following guest article by Jay Walljasper for AARP Livable Communities is republished with permission and speaks to the many benefits of a life that doesn't require a car.
There are many reasons why increasing numbers of older adults are exploring ways to get around without a car. I spoke with several seniors who agree that despite occasional challenges, being car-free or car-lite has enhanced their lives.
Staying Healthy, Saving Money
Ken and Roberta Avidor, both 60 and illustrators in St. Paul, Minnesota, made a snap decision to go carless after their vehicle broke down on the freeway. They have no regrets. "Besides saving a lot of money and hassle, there are the health benefits of walking and biking more," Ken says. "And we feel mental health benefits, too. We have more contact with people and lead a more convivial life."
Urban consultant Gil Penalosa, 58, who lives without a car in Toronto and works in many American cities, observes that "older people want to have a variety of ways to get around. When older people have transportation options they can age in place and not depend on others to drive them everywhere."
Americans today remain in the drivers' seat later in life than during earlier generations. (93 percent of men and 83 percent of women over age 50 are behind the wheel at least part of the time — figures that decrease to 78 percent for men and 52 percent for women over age 80, according to Federal Highway Administration data.)
But less time behind the wheel makes sense for everyone's long-term plans. Even if you're still able to drive, life could be less stressful and more fun if you didn't have to. And think what you could do with an extra $9,000 each year. (That's the amount AAA calculates owning a car costs.)
"If older people can live without a car, or one less car, it's like winning the lottery," says Penalosa. Every year that sum could be applied to retirement accounts, vacations, entertainment, hobbies, charity, grandchildren's education funds or other aspirations.
Real estate developer Christopher Leinberger, 64, lives car-lite in Washington, D.C. "Having $9,000 in additional expenses is something many older Americans can't afford."
Meet A Few Car-Free Americans
About Town in Arlington
Roslyn Rubin, 68, has lived without a car for more than 20 years in suburban Arlington, Virginia, after an eye condition made it difficult to drive after dark. "I ride trains, buses, one of my bikes, and I walk. And I just started using Uber to get to a health club that is impossible to get to by bus or bike."
"People used to look at me like I was strange when I told them I didn't have a car," she remembers. "Now it's not a big deal to them. And for me, it's getting easier and easier all the time. We have more bike lanes, and I have a folding bike I can take on the train. I use an app called Next Bus, which, just as it says, lets you know when the next bus is coming."
Rubin, who recently retired from a telecommunications firm, says she feels safer on the streets in and around D.C. today than she did in the 1990s, when street crime was at a peak. The sidewalks are bustling with people until at least 10 p.m. on the seven-minute walk from the train stop to her townhouse. "A lot more of my neighbors are out walking now."
Arlington, where biking and walking account for 16.6 percent of all trips around town, encourages residents to consider living without an automobile with its Car-Free Diet, which is an informational and inspirational resource about reducing the daily intake of motorized mobility.
"I've got a $500 vehicle and a multibillion dollar back-up system," jokes Arlington resident Peter Harnik, 66, who bikes — sometimes all the way to his Washington, D.C., office at The Trust for Public Land. Other times he bicycles to a Metro train stop about a mile from his house. Harnik and his wife put less than 6,000 miles on their car every year, and those miles are usually from trips to the beach, the mountains or big-box stores.
Harnik's family has been car-lite for two decades, including when their son and daughter were living at home on a leafy block of single-family homes. "It's much cheaper than being car dependent, and we both waste less time searching the house for car keys. Once every six months or so, we need the car at the same time. Then I'll call a cab."
Sharing One Car in Suwanee
"Retired couples, even active ones with busy schedules, can often manage with just one car," says Dick Goodman of Suwanee, Georgia, where he and his wife, Louise, both in their 70s, get by just fine with one vehicle.
"The key is that we schedule our lives with a shared electronic calendar," he says. "By entering appointments, events, meetings, and the like in the calendar on any one of our devices, they're updated on every device. Louise and I are always aware of who needs the car when and for roughly how long. So, if I'm scheduling a meeting or a lunch date, all I have to do is bring up the calendar on my phone and see if there's a scheduling conflict for the car."
The native New Yorkers jokingly compare their single sedan to operating a New York City cab. "One driver returns the car to the garage and another driver hops in and heads out," explains Dick. "The seat never cools down. It’s been working beautifully for more than a decade."
On the Move in Minneapolis
Retired business executive Patricia Blakely, 70, who now works part-time as a spiritual director at a church, admits, "I really loved my last car, a Subaru Forester." But seven years ago she decided to experiment in living car-free after a series of mishaps familiar to anyone who drives — a $1,500 repair bill, another $233 charge when her car wouldn't start in the grocery store parking lot and then she was rear-ended (without harm) at a stoplight.
Blakely's main reason for ditching the car was financial. "I realized — with a jolt — that $1,500 would cover 1,000 bus fares," she explains, even though she had seldom ever ridden the bus. "With the money saved, I'm taking more trips, including one to Ghana, West Africa" to visit her son and his family.
But Blakely has discovered other unexpected benefits. "I feel healthier because walking is now built into my day, every day," she writes in her book, CarFree Living: Happy in the Not So Fast Lane. In fact before giving up her car, Blakely was diagnosed with osteoporosis in her spine and hip, but a recent bone density test downgraded the condition to pre-osteoporosis.
Blakely walks to the grocery store, bank, restaurants and a favorite coffee shop in her neighborhood, which consists mostly of single-family homes with yards. She rides the bus downtown to work and to shop at a Target store. A friend drives her to Tango dancing, and she chips in $5 for gas to make sure the arrangement remains "reciprocal." Blakely will occasionally grab a cab if inclement weather arises, and she will rent cars for longer-distance journeys. She just signed up for a carshare program.
"You might think living without a car would close off options and make my world smaller, but instead my world opened up in some surprising ways," she writes. "I experienced the sights, the sounds and the scents in a way that I would have missed driving... I will not be one of those women in her 80s, dreading the day her kids take away her car."
Hardy in Harrison
For 12 years, Diane Miller biked 20 miles to and from her job teaching communications at Finlandia University in Hancock, Michigan.
If you don't think that's impressive, keep in mind she rode throughout the winter in the far northern reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
"A lot of people thought of me as a character," she says. "But I really enjoyed it. You use your senses so much more on a bike. You can smell what people are having for dinner and see wildlife — and think about being a woman in her 50s who can eat all she wants!"
Now teaching at Mid-Michigan Community College, she continues to ride 20 miles to and from the school's Harrison campus. However, she does borrow her partner's car to drive the 60 miles to and from the Midland, Michigan, campus.
Says Miller: "I'm not Wonder Woman!"

Mental health market
Is there a place on the market for such an app?
The global Behavioural Health Market Size is poised to attain valuation of US$ 240 Billion by 2026, According to a new research report by Acumen Research and Consulting. The market is growing at striking CAGR around 2.5 % over the forecast time frame 2019 - 2026
Global Mental Health Software Market Will Reach USD 4,585 Million by 2026: Zion Market Research. According to the report, global mental health software market was valued at approximately USD 1,350 million in 2017 and is expected to generate revenue of around USD 4,585 million by end of 2026, growing at a CAGR of around 14.5% between 2018 and 2026.
In the developed countries, the cost of mental health problems is about 3-4 percent of Gross National Product. Mental disorders cost several billion dollars to national economies, in terms of loss of productivity and expenditures incurred. The annual average costs along with medical and disability costs for personnel with behavioral disorders, such as depression, is around four times more than those experienced by usual beneficiaries. Though, the treatment cost is frequently offset by a decrease in the number of days of non-attendance at work.
The global mental health software market is segmented based on component, functionality, delivery model, and end-user. By component, the mental health software market is bifurcated into software and support services. The software segment is further segmented as integrated software and standalone software. Support system held a major market in 2017, due to the continuously increasing demand for software upgrade and maintenance services.
By functionality, the mental health market is segmented into administrative functionality, clinical functionality, and financial functionality. The clinical functionality covers clinical decision support (CDS), electronic health records (EHR), care plans/health management, telehealth, and e-prescribing. The administrative functionality segment is sub-segmented into document/image management, patient/client scheduling, case management, workforce management, and business intelligence (BI). The financial functionality segment includes managed care, revenue cycle management, accounts payable/general ledger, and payroll. The Clinical Functionality segment held a major share, i.e., more than 40%, in the global market in 2017. This can be due to the rising adoption of clinical functionality software by hospitals and clinicians to provide smooth accessibility to the healthcare system.
Based on geography, the mental health software market is segmented in five major regions namely, North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East and Africa. North America held the major share, i.e., of more than 40%, in the global market in 2017. It is expected to reach a value of around USD 1,900 million by 2026. The large number of healthcare companies, huge population suffering from various mental disorders, and high awareness of new and advanced technologies with government support are likely to be the key factors boosting this regional market. In the U.S., 1 in 5 adults had a mental health condition, i.e., over 40 million Americans were suffering from mental illness in the year 2016.
Mental health UK statistics
every week, 1 in 6 adults experiences a common mental health problem, such as anxiety or depression and 1 in 5 adults has considered taking their own life at some point.
One in six (17%) of people over the age of 16 had a common mental health problem in the week prior to being interviewed. This is an increase from the 2007 survey, which found that 16.2% had a common mental health problem in the past week.
Since 2000, there has been a slight steady increase in the proportion of women with symptoms of common mental health problems (CIS-R score of 12 or more), with this increase in prevalence mostly evident at the severe end of the scale (CIS-R 18 or more). Men overall have remained relatively stable.
Nearly half (43.4%) of adults think that they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life (35.2% of men and 51.2% of women). A fifth of men (19.5%) and a third of women (33.7%) have had diagnoses confirmed by professionals.
A third of people (36.2%) who self-identified as having a mental health problem in the 2014 APMS have never been diagnosed by a professional.
In 2014, 19.7% of people in the UK aged 16 and older showed symptoms of anxiety or depression – a 1.5% increase from 2013. This percentage was higher among females (22.5%) than males (16.8%).
The APMS (2014) reports that, in England, the rates of common mental health problems are highest in the South West (20.9%), North West (19%), West Midlands (18.4%) and London (18%). They are lowest in the South East (13.6%) and the East (14.4%).
Findings from the APMS (2014) show that all types of common mental health problems were more prevalent in women than in men, with significance for GAD, phobias, panic disorder and CMD-NOS. See Figure 1a for the prevalence of common mental health problems by sex.
The gap in rates of common mental health problems between young men and women (aged 16–24) has been growing. In 1993, young women were twice as likely (19.2%) to have symptoms of a common mental health problem compared to young men (8.4%). In 2014, these symptoms were nearly three times more common in young women (26.0%) than in men (9.1%). Anxiety was found to be more common in young women than in other age groups.
Health surveys across the devolved nations found similar gender patterns in the distribution of common mental health problems.
Findings from the APMS (2014) show that, with the exception of panic disorder, all types of mental health problems were more prevalent in people of working age (aged 16–64) than those aged 65 and over. See Figure 1b for the prevalence of common mental health problems by age group.
Mental health in middles aged people
Since the last survey in 2007, the APMS (2014) shows an increase in common mental health problems among late-mid-life men and women (aged 55–64), suggesting that this population group may be particularly vulnerable to the impact of the economic recession.
In 2013, there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety disorder, more than 1 million cases of addiction and almost 4 million cases of mood disorders, including bipolar disorder, in the UK.
A 2006 meta-analysis of 26 epidemiologic studies of children and adolescents born in Britain between 1965 and 1996 found that the one-year prevalence of depression in mid- to lateadolescence was between 4% and 5%.
According to the APMS (2014), in England, one in six (17%) of adults met the diagnostic criteria for at least one common mental health problem in the week prior to being surveyed.
The prevalence of mental health problems has increased for each common mental health problem, with the exception of panic disorder, for adults over the age of 16 (see Table 1b).
In 2014, 17.5% of working-age adults (16–64 years old) had symptoms of common mental health problems. However, for those aged over 65, the rate is much lower (10.2% of 65–74 year olds and 8.1% of those aged 75+).
For working-age adults, the proportion of common mental health symptoms (CIS-R score of 12+) has remained stable between 2000 and 2014; however, the prevalence of severe mental health symptoms (CIS-R score of 18+) has increased (7.9% in 2000, 8.5% in 2007, and 9.3% in 2014).
Suicide
The same study found that young people aged 16–24 were more likely to report suicidal thoughts than any other age group, with women in this age group having the highest levels of suicidal thoughts than any other group (see Figure 1f).
Rates of suicidal thoughts in the past year have increased from 3.8% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2014. This considerable increase was found for both men and women. Significant increases were found for men aged 55–64, which nearly tripled between 2007 (1.9%) and 2014 (5.3%) (see Figure 1g overleaf).
One in 15 (6.7%) of adults in England are estimated to have made a suicide attempt at some point in their life. This was found to be higher for women (8.0%) than men (5.4%).
Workplace
A 2014 UK survey found that one in six people tried to take their own life while on a waiting list for psychological therapy.
64% of people with common mental health problems are employed; therefore, in the UK, there is an estimated 4.6 million people in work who may have a common mental health problem. That equates to 1 in 6.8 employed people experiencing mental health problems in the workplace.
Better mental health support in the workplace can save UK businesses up to £8 billion a year.
Introducing a workplace intervention in the form of an employee screening and care management for those living with (or at risk of) depression was estimated to cost £30.90 per employee for assessment, and a further £240.00 for the use of CBT to manage the problem, in 2009. According to an economic model, in a company of 500 employees where two thirds are offered and accept the treatment, an investment of £20,676 will result in a net profit of approximately £83,278 over a twoyear period.
Promoting wellbeing at work through personalised information and advice, a risk-assessment questionnaire, seminars, workshops and web-based materials will cost approximately £80 per employee per year. For a company with 500 employees, where all employees undergo the intervention, it is estimated that an initial investment of £40,000 will result in a net return of £347,722 in savings, mainly due to reduced presenteeism (lost productivity that occurs due to an employee working while ill) and absenteeism (missing work due to ill health).
Apps and wearables
Technology is a fundamental part of day-to-day life in Britain today; therefore, it is not surprising that people across the UK have embraced it as part of their healthcare. The Aviva Health Check Report conducted in 2015 showed that 63% of those surveyed in the UK use the Internet to read about how to manage a condition or illness, be it physical or mental. Additionally, 39% of people use the Internet to get information on how to improve their health and wellbeing.
Computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (CCBT) is a form of psychological treatment that appears to be accessible and costeffective, and suitable for people who prefer using a computer than talking to a therapist about their private feelings. However, they still benefit from occasional meetings or phone calls with a therapist to guide and monitor their progress. There may be different forms of modality some of which use more or less support from a therapist. CCBT is believed to be most effective for treating mild–moderate depression.
A 2010 systematic review of the evidence from around the globe suggests that CCBT is effective on a comparable level to clinic-delivered CBT at reducing anxiety in children. This finding was reported to be sustained over time.
In 2015, a study in England with 23 adolescents revealed that CCBT led to improvements in depression and anxiety. This improvement was sustained at 12-month follow-up.
Gilbody et al. (2015) conducted a study with adults with depressive symptoms who received treatment via CCBT, GP care or neither (controls). This study found that there were no additional improvements in depression from using CCBT compared to usual GP care after four months of treatment.
Data collected by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) on IAPT found that, in England, CCBT was the secondto-least most common form of psychological therapy, with only 11,168 appointments in 2014–15. However, for referrals with problems of depression or depressive symptoms, CCBT had the highest rate of recovery (58.4%).
One significant issue to consider with CCBT is adherence to this treatment, as studies highlight that adherence to CCBT is very poor (17%)
Healthcare mobile apps are being used to access information about, and monitor, nutrition. According to Aviva’s Health Check Report in 2015, 9% of respondents use a nutrition tracker app and 31% said they are open to the idea of using such apps in the future
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is an integrative, mind– body-based approach that can help people manage their thoughts and feelings and change the way they relate to experiences. The aim of mindfulness is to pay attention to the present moment without judgement and use techniques that draw on meditation, breathing and yoga.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) has been recommended by NICE as a preventative practice for people with recurrent depression.512 A 2016 meta-analysis of randomised control trials found that MBCT was an effective intervention for relapse prevention in recurrent major depressive disorder.
In 2014, Williams et al. conducted a study in England and Wales with 255 people with major depressive disorder. They found that MBCT provided the most significant protection against relapse for patients with increased vulnerability due to childhood trauma, with a relapse rate of 41% compared to other interventions: cognitive psychological education had a relapse rate of 54%; and treatment as usual, such as medication and attending mental health practitioners and other services, had a relapse rate of 65%.
After conducting a follow-up of an online mindfulness course, Krusche et al. (2013) found that perceived stress, anxiety and depression decreased at course completion and further decreased at one-month follow-up.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis carried out by Taylor et al. (2016) examining the effectiveness of mindfulnessbased interventions for reducing depression, anxiety and stress, and improving mindfulness skills in the perinatal period, failed to find any significant post-intervention benefits for depression, anxiety or stress of mindfulness-based interventions in comparison to control groups.
A meta-analysis of the effectiveness of online mindfulness-based interventions in regards to the improving of mental health and wellbeing showed that online mindfulness-based interventions had a beneficial impact on depression, anxiety, wellbeing, mindfulness and stress.
Online mindfulness has been found to be a positive application of mindfulness, with a research study published by the University of Oxford in November 2013 providing evidence of the effectiveness of the Be Mindful online course. The study examined the effects of the course for 273 people who had completed it, and showed that, on average, after one month, they enjoyed:
-A 58% reduction in anxiety levels
-A 57% reduction in depression
-A 40% reduction in stress
A 2016 study by the University of Surrey found that those who completed Be Mindful had lower levels of work-related rumination and fatigue, and improved sleep quality compared with those on a waiting list.
The effects were maintained at three- and six-month follow-ups, suggesting that online mindfulness interventions can have positive effects for work-related mental health problems and stress.

Babylon Health to create city-wide digital health service with UK hospital
Babylon Health, the company behind the GP at Hand phone app being piloted in the NHS, has partnered with a UK hospital in a bid to create the world’s first integrated digital health system serving an entire city.
The 10-year partnership with Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust aims to provide remote access to GPs and hospital specialists at times that suit patients.
The first new services are expected to go live before the end of this year.
Other services planned include live monitoring of patients with chronic conditions and personalised care plans developed with Babylon’s AI technology.
These will be delivered through a single, free app for maximum convenience and to avoid unnecessary travel.
Financial details of the agreement have not been fully agreed and a spokesperson for the company told pharmaphorum this is under discussion after both parties signed a memorandum of understanding.
But according to Babylon it is expected that both parties will contribute to the project, which is seen as a “joint venture” between the two organisations.
Through the app, patients could be able to have clinical consultations with doctors and specialist nurses, while also giving patients control of appointment booking and prescriptions.
It will also create health reports based on a user’s medical history and lifestyle, displaying it as a “digital twin”.
An AI Health Assistant will give users medical information and triage advice, based on epidemiological data.
There will also be care plans to support proactive care of patients, and a real-time monitoring service using information from wearable tech and connecting apps.
A rehab service aims to provide fast remote clinical responses to help recovery and avoid readmissions.
The Royal Wolverhampton Trust is one of the largest acute community providers in the West Midlands region, with more than 850 beds at its New Cross site, 56 rehab beds at West Park Hospital and 54 beds at Cannock Chase Hospital.
It is the largest employer in Wolverhampton, with more than 9,400 staff covering more than 350 different roles.
Babylon was given permission to expand its GP at Hand service in neighbouring Birmingham after it received backing from England’s independent healthcare watchdog, the Care Quality Commission at the end of 2019.
Blessing from the CQC came two years after the watchdog said in a report that it provided unsafe care, and doctors have criticised the service because of the initially poor reviews and concerns that it targets mainly young and healthy patients.

DC United have released a rather predictable one-line statement in response to the story around Wayne Rooney tonight.
“It is DC United’s policy not to comment on player or transfer speculation.”
Rooney has over two years left on the three-and-a-half year deal he signed when he left Everton last summer.

Huddersfield 0-0 Derby
Oh, Tommy Elphick is a very lucky boy. The replay shows his arm was well away from his body when the ball struck it.
At the other end, Adama Diakhaby’s quick break down Huddersfield’s right is blocked by Derby captain Richard Keogh.
A great start to this game.

Huddersfield 0-0 Derby
Derby could have had a penalty in the first minute!
Tom Lawrence breaks towards the edge of the Huddersfield box and tries a shot, which looks to be blocked by the arm or hand of Tommy Elphick.

KICK-OFF
Huddersfield 0-0 Derby
The final act of the opening weekend of the Championship season is under way.

Huddersfield v Derby (19:45 BST)
New Derby boss Phillip Cocu is suited and booted in the away dugout. He’s just shared a warm embrace with Jan Siewert, who finds time to fist-bump a couple of young Huddersfield fans in the stand before kick-off.
Nice.

Patrick Shaw:Not only did Huddersfield do the double against Wolves, they did it without conceding a goal in either game.
I know, Patrick. I was at both games. They were tough watches – for a Wolves fan, anyway.

Phillip Cocu has pedigree. He won plenty as a player with PSV and Barcelona, and played more than 100 times for the Netherlands.
As a manager, he won three Dutch titles with PSV in his first full-time managerial role.
Will he soon be adding “promotion to the Premier League with Derby County” to his impressive football CV? He says another top-six finish is a realistic ambition for the Rams this season.
“It’s not only this one goal we’re setting. We’re developing the style of play, develop the young players in the team,” he said.

Derby’s summer was dominated by talk about the future of manager Frank Lampard.
Will he stay? Will he go?
Well, in the end, he went. The lure of the top job at Lampard’s former club Chelsea proved too much to resist, and so Derby have turned to another esteemed former midfielder to lead their hopes of a Championship promotion charge.

It’s just 70 days since Derby’s Premier League dreams were put on hold for another season.
A play-off final defeat by Aston Villa at Wembley on 27 May left the Rams contemplating a 12th successive year outside the top flight.

MSR:Rooney to Derby would be a coup, he still has lots to offer as a player, never mind passing on his experience as a coach.
Even as a somewhat-lapsed Forest supporter, I’d applaud the move.
If you weren’t with me earlier, former England captain Wayne Rooney has been linked with a move to Derby in a player-coach role. Let me know your thoughts on that using #bbcefl on social media.

Top 10 buildings ‘crying out’ to be saved
Image copyright Victorian Society
Image caption The old Legat’s Ballet School is hidden by thick woodland and “shrouded in mystery”.
An old Islamic school once suspected of training terrorists and a group of gothic cemetery chapels have been named on a top 10 endangered buildings list.
The former Legat’s ballet school in East Sussex was raided by police in 2006 – now a campaign hopes to save it.
The Victorian Society’s annual list aims to expose the plight of Victorian and Edwardian buildings at risk.
Society president Griff Rhys Jones said: “Every single building is crying out for redevelopment.”
He added: “These are pieces of the history of the Victorian era and its industrial, spiritual and cultural beliefs – incredible.
“And this makes their current sad and neglected state even harder to swallow.”
Former Legat’s School of Ballet, near Rotherfield, East Sussex (Grade II, 1865)
Image copyright Victorian Society
This Victorian Mansion, which started life as a girls’ orphanage, was raided by police in 2006 on suspicion it was being used as a terrorist training camp.
Christopher Costelloe, director of the Victorian Society, said the former Legat’s School of Ballet was “shrouded in mystery as access is so difficult”.
The dance school operated from 1970-90 but the building was bought by a charity in the early 1990s and run as an Islamic school, which closed in 2007.
The Winter Gardens, Great Yarmouth (Grade II 1878-81)
Image copyright Victorian Society
The glass and iron Winter Gardens structure was built in Torquay and then relocated by barge to Great Yarmouth in 1904, the society explained.
Over the years, it said, the “unique, nationally-important building” had been used as a ballroom, roller-skating rink and a German beer garden.
Bromley-by-Bow gasholders, London (All Grade II, 1872)
Image copyright bromley.jpg
These seven gasholders – an eighth was destroyed by a bomb in World War Two – in east London are surrounded by industrial development.
The society said the value of so many Victorian gasholders packed together was “unmatched anywhere else in the world”.
It said this made the collection a “true symbol for the Industrial Revolution and historically of high significance”.
Merseyside Centre for the Deaf, Liverpool (Grade II, 1887)
Image copyright Victorian Society
Initially built as a chapel for the Merseyside deaf community, the society said the “once grand” gothic structure was now in a “terrible state”.
For 20 years after it closed in 1986 it was run as a successful community centre for the Igbo community but rising costs forced them out in 2007.
Hartley’s Village, Aintree, Liverpool (three Grade II buildings, 1886-95)
Image copyright Victorian Society
Hartley’s jam founder, philanthropist Sir William Pickles Hartley, built a village of 49 houses for his workers at this factory site.
The main factory building was demolished in the early 20th Century and while the houses have been in use, the remaining factory buildings are said to be largely derelict.
In 2011 the site was declared a Conservation Area and the Victorian Society said it “deserves to be protected, restored and celebrated”.
Oldway Mansion, Paignton, Devon (Grade II*, 1873)
Image copyright Victorian Society
Built as the private residence for the American inventor and sewing machine entrepreneur Isaac Singer, the mansion was remodelled by his son in the early 20th Century in the style of the Palace of Versailles.
It had many different functions during the later 20th Century and was used as council offices from 1946 until 2007.
Now its future is uncertain, but the Victorian Society said the community felt strongly it should remain a public space.
John Summers Steelworks, Shotton, Wales (Grade II, 1907)
Image copyright Victorian Society
The former office building of the John Summers Steelworks stands on the banks of the River Dee but the society said its highly industrial location had made its re-use complicated and so far unsuccessful.
To make matters worse, it said the building was subject to regular break-ins and vandalism and was now in a poor state of repair.
Langley Maltings, Sandwell, West Midlands (Grade II, 1870)
Image copyright Victorian Society
Sitting on the banks of the Titford Canal, the maltings were used until 2006 but fell victim to arson in 2009 which the society said caused “significant” damage.
They were were saved from demolition in 2012 but have since fallen into disrepair.
Brandwood End Cemetery Chapels, Birmingham (Grade II, 1898)
Image copyright Victorian Society
The red brick, neo-gothic mortuary chapels stand at the highest point of Brandwood cemetery grounds.
The society said they provided a “dramatic central focus” for the cemetery but were in a “terrible state”.
The chapels have been closed for more than 30 years and an arson attack in 1995 gutted the north-east one.
St Mary’s Convent Church, Leeds (Grade II*, 1852)
Image copyright Victorian Society
The church lies in a disused plot of land next to a high school just outside central Leeds.
Closed for almost 30 years, the society said urban explorer photographs had revealed “very dilapidated” interiors.
The society said: “Such a beautiful building in a prominent location deserves much more than being left to rot.”

The Victorian Society is a statutory consultee which offers advice on planning applications for buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian periods that involve an element of demolition.
It is also a campaigning charity which seeks to raise awareness of buildings at risk in the UK.
“The more people who know about the buildings, the higher their profile and therefore the less likely that they can be left alone to rot or be quietly disposed of,” said the society.
People interested in saving buildings in their area can join the friends groups working with them, it said.
It was “certainly a possibility” that some of the buildings could be converted into homes but the cost was often very high, the society said.
“This is often a main reason why historic buildings are purchased by larger developers who wish to use them for commercial or ‘luxury’ development schemes,” it said.
“As an architectural charity, our focus is always on getting the building re-used in a sensitive way that is respectful of the historic fabric.”
