#1732 - Acacia cochlearis - Rigid Wattle
While the focus in this photo is on the unidentified galls, the leaves are distinctive enough to identify the host - a shrub wattle up to 3m tall, growing in sandy soils in coastal areas on sandplains and sand dunes. Found from Lancelin to Israelite Bay, where it is found growing as solitary plants or in dense thickets - it certainly does all of that in the places I’ve seen it.
It flowers from July to October, with the flower heads spherical and yellow, and not easily distinguished from the majority of other wattles.
Rigid Wattle was first formally described by the botanist Jacques Labillardière in 1807 as Mimosa cochlearis as part of the work Novae Hollandiae Plantarum Specimen. It was then reclassifed as an Acacia by Heinrich Wendland in 1820 as part of the work Commentatio de Acaciis aphyllis, reclassified again in 2003 by Leslie Pedley as Racosperma cochleare then transferred back to genus Acacia in 2006 in that controversial taxonomic decision I’ve mentioned elsewhere.

Is there a certain style of music that you think there is far too much of in the fandom? By too much i mean that for example a new dubstep/brostep track may be quite popular compared to some breakbeat but will still inevitably get lost in the sea of similarity that lies before it.
I don’t really pay attention to fandom music anymore, so I can’t really answer that. The only songs I know of that get released within the fandom are the ones my friends release, and those are very few, as most of my friends have moved away from the whole pony thing.
I have no idea who’s popular these days, if that’s even a thing anymore. I just really have no interest in the whole pony music scene anymore.

ph00t's Favorites 1/21 - 2/3
Our staff member ph00tbag (AKA Sonic Rainboom) wanted to give a shout out to a lot of very special tracks this week.
Vaceslav - Barriers
Vaceslav keeps putting out incredible music, and Barriers is very true to form. What I love most about this tune is the way the lyrics convey how impossible Cadance and Shining Armor's relationship seemed to both parties outset, and how that just tore them up inside. There's a lot of pathos there, and Vaceslav and Itchigotchi really capture it.
Art Fonseca - Loyalty
So Loyalty, by AcoustiMandoBrony, was one of those instant classics a few years ago, and the thrashy rock sound was chosen as emblematic of Rainbow Dash. But Art Fonseca decided to take a bit of a creative risk by using a more Fusion-inspired sound, which appeals to me a lot. It really feels particularly good in the Chorus, and in the solo.
Nicolas Dominique - Through Chaos
Call me predictable, but I hear a Trance tune from Nicolas Dominque, and I can't stop myself from telling everyone about it. Among the increasingly rare active Trance producers in this fandom, Nic stands out for his ability to build without it feeling like a build, then you wake up from the hypnosis, and the tune has suddenly gotten very intense. I wish there was more music like this these days.
Egor Lappo - Stop the Bats
One of the best things about this tune is actually watching Egor Lappo play that truly terrifying eight-string. Lappo really pulls me in for more listens on this tune with the details, though. He finds a lot of little places to insert creative little licks that give the tune a lot more character.
Warbalist ft. Metal Mare - Harmony of Life
The Bossa Nova rhythm on this tune is really a whole lot of fun. The Jazzy feel is a whole lot of fun in general. Metal Mare has a really full alto sound, with great control, and phenomenal range, and Warbalist's Guitar solo is really strong. Shouts out as well to Pashoo for his horn work. This was a tune off the latest Seeds of Kindness album. Definitely check it out.
BlackStone - The Unrequiter
If this is just the test version of this tune, I can't wait for the cleaned up version. The indie rock style is a perfect fit for this tune, what with Trenderhoof serving as, at least partial, inspiration. Whenever Main jumps into those falsetto notes, I get a little smile on my face.
Mr BronyDash - The Life of Freedom
In Life of Freedom, BronyDash seems to be channeling a little bit of Johnny Cash. As a result, this tune kinda gives a feeling of nostalgia. This is one of those tunes that appeals to me for its simplicity. Thematically, it's quite appropriate, as well, with its focus on Applejack striking out on her own.
Adam Sporka - Ultrafast Galactic Bebop from Outer Space
With this tune, I just want to get up and start moving. Sporka is making a really neat use of disonance in this tune. In combination with the bouncy rhythm, and old-school sound design, this tune is a great ditty to get down to, just as Pinkie Pie would like it.
Spectra - Resistance
I was sold on this tune the moment that that rock solid rolling bassline kicked in. I guess in the end I really am a sucker for the tropes of good old trance music. I mean, this whole tune just puts me in the mind of some good old Cygnus X tunes. The transition in the breakdown to a more orchestral rock sound is really interesting, and really helps the tune's charm.
3Spirit - Enchantress
In the last year or so, 3Spirit's really been coming into his own as an artist. There's a lot of really cool detail in this tune. The sound design and sample selection in this tune are definitely on point. I'm a really big fan of the way the congas are use to very subtly suggest the driving rhythm of the tune.
Aphylliate - Power
Everything on W.I.T.S., Aphylliate's latest EP, is definitely worth checking out, but Power is definitely my favorite. If you've followed my highlights very closely, you can probably guess why. Yep, it's the bassline. Also, the liberal application of laser zaps and acid stabs. In general, this is a great paean to the classic rave music of the 90s, which is something I always support.
KaminaDash - Bubbles
I usually just kinda roll my eyes (haha) when people make stuff about Derpy Hooves. It's not that I don't like her, but usually it feels really forced. That said, every once and a while, someone makes something that just feels like it gets the character. Bubbles does that. Without really having to make direct reference to it, the tune captures her unwavering sincerity.

Aphylliate Spotlight
Sometimes when you've seen a plethera of brony musicians come and go it's easy to feel underwhelmed by the "typical" pony EDM. Aphylliate is not new (making music since 2012) but when he filled out a bmd entry just recently it was a perfect time to get reacquainted with someone who is stepping out from the herd. I wanted to elevate his profile here on FIMM as these tracks are pretty fantabulous.
Youtube SoundCloud Bandcamp tumblr Location: Southampton, UK Age: 21 " I started writing music on the Playstation when I was just 9 years old. Since then I have written for wind bands, small trios, guitar, piano and a few string instruments. I currently produce a range of genres that mainly encompass breakbeat, trance, hardcore, techno, rock, 8-bit and house. I've been in the fandom since 2012 and love to write songs based on the stories, adventures and ideas both from the show and the fandom. I use Logic Pro 9 and barely anything else. You can purchase (most) of my music from my bandcamp, if it's not on there it means i think it needs fixing!!"

Aphylliate - Phase Three
Aphylliate, which inexplicably shortens to Philly, recently released a new EP experimenting with a couple new genres. Find, in particular, is a very cool tune, so check it out if only for that.

ph00t's Favorites 3/19 - 4/1
ViolaNeko - Perfection
Perfection sells itself just on the opening groove. This is what House music is all about. ViolaNeko builds the rhythm over time, adding complexity as time goes on. No need for breakdowns, or builds, or drops. Just the beat. Hopefully we get more out of this artist.
Agents of Discord - Making Sense
I'll never get tired of acid music. Agents of Discord takes inspiration from Discord's proclivity for lateral thinking to craft a little tune demonstrating the tendency for acid music to show similar qualities.
Visions of the Poet - Flight of the Bird of Flame
So I will often listen to MotDs and other people's suggestions while doing other things. I admit it, I find active listening boring. Usually, music that gets into these feature posts gets there because it gets me to stop what I'm doing and start listening to a tune actively. Flight of the Bird of Flame is one of those tunes. There's no one thing that makes me like it, I just like it.
FritzyBeat - Aerial Promenade
There's no shortage of vocalists in brony music community. There's also no shortage of songs about Rainbow Dash. It can be hard to stand out. It's certainly hard to give everyone their due, since there's only so much time to talk about them all. FritzyBeat certainly deserves some recognition for Aerial Promenade. The minimalism of the background music evokes the chill and stillness of the air before a sunrise. Perfect for the introspective qualities of the song.
Risen - Endless (Hay Tea Remix)
The modulation on the bass in this tune is so cool. It makes for an interesting juxtaposition. The bass feels very aggressive and growly, but the rest of the music is light and airy. Being DnB, of course, it's also very fast. If there's a word that describes this remix to me, it's "taut."
Find the Music in You (Vylet Pony Cover)
Every time there's a new song in pony cartoons, there's a rush of remixes. Some with more effort than others. It always seems there's a challenge to really own the tune and add something all one's own. Vylet Pony bowls that challenge over like it's nothing. The melody is redone, and a whole new feel is added. This cover stands totally on its own, which is something that warrants consideration.
Scratch Attack - Button Smash (Aoshi Remix)
Every sound in this song is disgusting. Every single one makes me want to vomit all over my keyboard, eat the vomit and throw it up again. And even then, none of the things I did will be dirtier or grimier than the stuff Aoshi is doing here. This paragraph is a compliment.
Night Breeze - Wintersnow's Lullaby
It's really easy to write this song off as not requiring much effort. "Oh, the guy used music box samples. Great." Well, to say nothing of the music itself, which is beautiful in its own right, there's just a lot of excellent detail in the production. The winding noise in the opening is obvious, but there's microphone hiss through the entire tune, and you can even hear the whirr of the gears, ever so subtly in the background. Either Night Breeze put together his own music box to play this tune, or a lot of work went into the illusion of authenticity. That earns big points in my book.
AdamTh3Walker - geologist
I like percussion that sounds like someone making popping and sucking noises with their mouth. AdamTh3Walker knows just how I like it. Beyond that, the singing and instrumentation of the tune are all wonderfully understated, which makes every little moment all the more impactful. The lyrics themselves have a wonderful poetic parallelism, which makes it all the more important you listen to what Adam has to say.
Encore - Find the Music in You
Timestretching and vocoders are interesting tools. They have the potential to drastically change the tone of a piece of music. Find the Music in You is a sweet, uplifting tune, but Encore makes it sound dark and forboding. I'm not sure whether I like the tune or not, but it's certainly interesting.
Grizzly - Baltimare Mining Operation
Brony music can always use more techno. It's fitting that this tune would be about a mining operation. Techno as a genre focuses on the things in our lives that are repetitive and mechanistic. Even in the realm of ponies, mining would fall into that realm. Grizzly captures that sense pretty well.
Aphylliate - Cruel Joke
And a little bit more techno to round out this set of features. This one uses pitch shifting to emulate the Flutterguy sound. The final effect is really creepy, a sense that is helped along by the profusion of sound effects and the chromatic chord progression.
