A cinematic lens on fundamental Freedoms
Cinema has long been a medium for exploring social issues, and theme that keeps being told in the concept of human rights. Through stories that resonate on deep personal level, films are able to illuminate the principles that are enshrined in the European convention on human rights also known as Article 10's core values.
The freedom of expression
One of the most prominently featured rights in film is that of freedom of expression, this right is about the freedom to hold opinions, receive, and share information without anyone's interference. The 2006 movie The Lives of Others serves as an illustration of this right's use in cinema, demonstrating how brittle it is in authoritarian governments. The story of a stasi officer sent to monitor a dramatist accused of subversion takes place in East Germany during the Cold War. The officer becomes entangled in the lives of his targets.

Another great example of such rights being exploited is the film Good night, and Good Luck (2005), as it highlights the danger of suppressing Journalistic Freedom. The film follows journalist Edward R. Murrow's stand against McCarthyism in 1950s America. McCarthyism is a campaign against alleged communists in the US Government and other institutions carried out under Senator Joseph McCarthy from 1950 to 1954, this lead to many of the accused to be blacklisted or the loss of their job, though most did not in fact belong to any communist party.
Human Rights:
Films can function as a tool for advocacy, a rally for change or even justice. In the documentary The Act of Killing (2012), they managed to bring real world-violations to lights, which made the audience demand for accountability. This Documentary is about Anwar Congo who was a leader in the 1960s in Indonesia's pro-regime paramilitary group, Pancasila youth who, along with his dedicated followers, was amongst those who participated in the murder and torture of over more than a million alleged Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals. Anwar and his companions are celebrated as national heroes and were thrilled when the filmmakers asked them to reenact these murders for the documentary. They were also pleased of their actions, which, as far as I know, have not yet resulted in any punishment.

The Human Rights Watch and Film Festival and the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival are two annual film festivals that focus on human rights and give filmmakers a stage on which to tell their stories that might otherwise go untold.

A living testament to common ideals, freedom, dignity, and justice, the European Convention on Human Rights is more than just a piece of legislation. Through film these values are able to bridge the gap between the abstract principles and the lived experiences.
