If you’re an enemy and he hasn’t attacked you to teach you a lesson then he is just trying to get information on you by any means necessary this includes spying, computer info, surveillance, interrogation of your love ones, and acquiring a bargaining chip. so ya not the best guy to mess with. despite being the adopted son of stripes and brother to the plushy king, he isnt in speaking terms with the kingdom associates. banned from the kingdom.. the only way for cyrag to visit his brother is viva sneaking around, brown twisting the laws, and outside of kingdom grounds. now in present times tension rises as sylas is behind bars, stripes and brown appealing to the plush council to repel the ban on cyrag and his family. but an uneasy arcanick can ruin this and raise tension between the ruthless and the plushy kingdom ((spoiler alert..he tots does and starts a small feud between the two. but more on that later :U)). this egotistic plush is now his own boss and still one of the worlds dangerous assassin!

Rattlesnakes!

As the warm weather approaches, you're probably itching to get outside with your pets and enjoy the Colorado sun.  We are fortunate to live in an area with a friendly climate and very few serious dangers.  One of the few dangers we do have, however, is rattlesnakes.  Like bears, rattlers hibernate in the winter.  They come out of hibernation about now, and remain out until the weather turns cold in the fall.  Here in Colorado, the species of rattlesnake we generally see is the Prairie rattler (Crotalus viridis):

Fortunately, snakes generally prefer to be left alone, and will rarely bite if they are not antagonized.  In researching information for this article, I ran across the following quote from Dr. Timothy Hackett, a clinician at Colorado State University (and incidentally, one of my favorite teachers while I was there).  It sums things up nicely:

“Because rattlesnakes usually warn before they strike, most bites can be avoided.  Human snakebite victims are disproportionately represented by males < 30 years old, and the bites are often associated with use of alcohol and other illicit substances. Curious dogs could be considered the animal equivalent of a drunken teenager and usually get bitten on the face as they antagonize the innocent reptile.”

There’s a lot of good news in this statement, because essentially it means that prevention (always preferable to emergency management) is quite do-able.

How to prevent snakebite:

The most effective way to avoid snake bite is to prevent your dog from coming into contact with a rattler in the first place.  This is sometimes easier said than done, but if you have the option to avoid snake country during the warm months, just do that.  In Colorado Springs, the warm, flat areas of land are more likely to have snakes living in them than the cooler, hilly parts.  In particular, Ute Valley Park, Garden of the Gods, and many parks in the eastern part of the city are known to have rattlers living in them.                                              

If you do walk through snake country with your dog, have him on a leash.  You care far more about avoiding danger than he does, so having your dog attached to you will go a long way toward preventing unnecessary run-ins.                                                                                                         

If your dog has to be off-leash in snake country (as is generally the case if your yard happens to be inhabited by snakes), rattlesnake avoidance training may be helpful.                                                                                                                                                                                                 Now, I have a big caveat to this recommendation, because it involves shock collar (AKA e-collar) training.   Multiple studies have shown an increase in general anxiety and fearfulness in dogs trained with shock collars.  Furthermore, positive reinforcement-type training is generally more effective than training that incorporates shock collars (AKA e-collars) in any capacity.  So I never recommend shock collars or other aversive measures for routine dog training.                                                                                                                                                                 That said, there is no positive-reinforcement method to teach a dog to be afraid of snakes.  So if a dog has to be loose in rattlesnake territory, and that dog has no concurrent issues with anxiety or fear-based behaviors (this includes aggression, phobias, and panic disorders such as separation anxiety), avoidance training is likely going to do more good than harm for your dog.   A local trainer is sponsoring a snake aversion training session late this month (May 20 and 21).  If you’re interested, call or email us and we'll put you in contact with her.                                                                            

Lastly, there is a vaccine available to help prevent deadly reactions to snakebite.  This is last on my list for a reason: it’s my least favorite method of prevention.  While the vaccine has been on the market for over a decade, there is still no evidence to show whether or not it's effective.  This vaccine also has a much higher incidence of adverse reactions than other vaccines, so if you use it, you have to be prepared for potential problems.

What to do if your pet is bitten

If the worst thing still happens, and your pet is bitten, here’s what happens, and how you can help:

Regardless of whether your dog is vaccinated for rattlesnake venom, if you suspect she has been bitten, get her to a vet immediately.  If you are out on a trail, carry your dog back to the car if at all possible.  If that's not possible, walk (don’t run) straight back to your car.  You need to move quickly, but your dog also needs to be kept as quiet as possible so as to minimize circulation after the bite.  

Most pets who suffer the bite of a prairie rattler do survive, but the severity of the bite can vary dramatically from one case to another, depending partially on the amount of venom injected (this varies from one bite to the next), and partially on the size of your pet.

After a dog is bitten, the venom begins to circulate through the body, and will cause two types of reactions.  The first reaction, a painful local tissue necrosis (tissue around the bite first swells, then dies and sloughs off), begins within a few hours, and often takes a couple days to fully manifest itself.  There is no known way to stop this reaction from happening, but although ugly and painful, it’s rarely fatal.

The second reaction, a body-wide toxic reaction, is the more worrisome part.  Rattlesnake venom, once it gets into the circulation, can cause massive damage to blood vessels and cells.  The extent of this reaction varies depending on the location of the bite, the size of the dog, and the amount of venom injected.  Adult rattlesnakes are known to inhibit some of their venom release when they bite (presumably so as not to waste it all), but baby rattlers are said to be less discriminatory.  As a result, baby rattler bites can sometimes be worse than the bite of an adult snake.

Treatment of the systemic reaction is the most important part of treatment when it comes to your pet’s survival.  It’s also the most controversial part, because while a few antivenom treatments has been developed to help dogs with this emergency, in the case of Prairie rattlesnake bites, no one quite knows which product is ideal, or how much any of them help.  That said, if your dog is bitten, he will be hospitalized, placed on IV fluids and pain medications, and you will be offered an antivenom treatment in the hopes that it will boost your dog’s survival.

While snake bite kits do exist for sale online, their usefulness seems dubious at best.  I believe in teaching people how to handle problems themselves whenever possible.  In this case,  however, a heavy dose of prevention is your best bet, with emergency veterinary care as the back-up plan should prevention fail to work.
