And then by the middle of November, she will be bringing her products to the Marin County Mart Farmers Market in Larkspur. Located between the Larkspur Ferry Terminal and the new SMART Train Station, the Mart serves the communities of Marin County, as well as San Francisco locals who want a break from The City.
Then for Thanksgiving weekend, Brandes will be at the Crocker Holliday Artisan Market in downtown Sacramento at the Scottish Rite Center.
Described by co-chairs of the fundraiser, Lesli Pletcher, Jean Schaffer, Connie Spickelmier & Pamela Trump as “a tradition” and the place to find “one-of-a-kind treasures.”
Proceeds from the annual event support participating artists, Crocker Art Museum’s exhibitions and educational programs. Proceeds also go to Creative Arts League of Sacramento’s arts outreach to Mustard Seed School, Stanford Settlement, Sojourner Truth (SoJo); to low-cost art tours, and other important community programs in the Sacramento area.
During the three-day weekend artisan-crafts-extravaganza, Brandes will be among over 100 artists and craftspeople all providing the best in original works and special products.
Brandes strives to create the best in personal care items and just about every season she debuts a new item or product line variety.
Just in time for the holiday season, Brandes is introducing Warm Woods. “It’s really yummy with notes of Sandalwood, Cedar, Amber, Musk and Vetiver,” said Brandes.
Vetiver is considered to have health benefits and has been used for centuries like aloes, lavender and lemongrass. Like Sandalwood, Vetiver can be traced back to India. The Kannauj region was a major center of trade for this and other aromatic plants, herbs and spices.
During the reign of Emperor Harshavardhana, trade and demand for this perennial plant was so great, a tax on Vetiver was introduced. A very enduring plant it is both resilient and non-evasive.
Used in cosmetics, skin care and aromatherapy, Vetiver has been known in India for more than two millennia and is used in making soap. Naturally antiseptic, Vetiver it has been used to treat acne and skin abrasions.

Zinc Ricinoleate is an ingredient used in over the counter antiperspirants, although not recommended for use by children under 12 years old and even by adults. The zinc is extracted from the seeds of Ricinus Communis and from Castor oil. Many of the anti-perspirants we find today rely heavily on this combination of an antiseptic and an anti-odor ingredient to eliminate all the foul odors causing most of our problems. Most of them contain Triclosan as an active ingredient.
This ingredient is often found in over the counter products sold under the names "odium methyl benzoate" and "sodium methyl salicylate". It is a commonly used industrial preservative that is known to be harmful if ingested, especially by children. Although it has been banned in many countries it is still used by most domestic cosmetic manufacturers. The global riconazole market, which includes soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, deodorant and laundry soaps also uses it as an active ingredient. There is no requirement for manufacturers to list warnings of potential hazards if their products do not contain this hazardous ingredient.
The zinc ricinoleate regional outlook indicates that manufacturers are using it to give personal care products a green light without any warning of potential harm. It is found in soaps, shampoos, toothpastes and so forth. Manufacturers do not list it on product labels because they claim it is safe when used as an emulsifier (condensing and dispersing ingredients evenly), as an antifungal and as a preservative. While no direct sales channel was identified, the use of hand soap and dishwashing detergents is widespread. Shower water, bath water and bath oil are prime sources for absorption. Children also have access to the soap and shampoo in the bathroom in most cases, so there is a direct pathway from the consumer to the chemicals.
Zinc is a naturally occurring element. Manufacturers are able to add other elements to it to improve its ability to absorb and act as a preservative, but using zinc as an extra additive does not increase the purity of the product. In fact, it is not uncommon to find zinc deodorants and shower gels listed as "for use only with" or "do not use in unventilated areas."
After conducting our global zinc market research , we found that there are four major manufacturers that dominate the zinc market. The two that produced the highest purity percentages were L'Oreal International and Colgate Palmolive. These two companies had the highest profit margin per product and the lowest cost per product. We performed side-by-side comparisons on the four manufacturers' top brands to identify the competitive landscape. The analysis revealed that L'Oreal had the highest profit margin on the brand with an average cost per product that was higher than Colgate Palmolive despite the fact that it met the more stringent manufacturing standards set by the ISO.
When we compared the revenue generated by zinc ricinoleate against the other two manufacturers we found that it generated higher revenues per gallon despite having a lower cost per gallon. This finding suggests that zinc ricinoleate is a good fit for high-volume, low-priced upstream raw materials. If the company can reduce the cost per gallon while maintaining the same quality of zinc, it will have its success story.
