Dozens of alleged protesters were brought before a Nigerian court on Friday, sparking outrage as many of the defendants appeared to be malnourished following two months of detention.
Four young suspects - who were arrested during major anti-government protests in August - collapsed on the courtroom floor, writhing in pain before being removed to get medical help.
Human rights activists have criticised the justice system as at least one-third of those brought in for the initial court hearing were boys aged between 14 and 18.
All 76 defendants pleaded not guilty to charges of treason, felony and inciting mutiny.
Activists said the defendants had been in custody since August, when protests over a deepening cost-of-living crisis ignited across Nigeria.
The demonstrations turned violent in some places as protesters clashed with security forces. At least seven people died, according to police, though rights groups have put the death toll at 23.
There were also nearly 700 arrests.
In response to Friday's dramatic court hearing, which took place in the capital, Abuja, rights group Amnesty International said: "Putting minors through these horrifying detentions for participating in protests against hunger and corruption is - so far - one of the deadliest attempts to suppress freedom of assembly."
A Nigerian rights organisation, named Enough is Enough, called the situation "institutional child abuse".
"These teenagers have been remanded in prison for saying they were hungry. Their place is in school, not prison. Release them now," the organisation demanded.
Some of those who appeared in court on Friday were charged with flying Russian flags during the protests.
Video footage of the demonstrations showed a small number of protesters waving Russian flags and calling on Russia’s President Vladimir Putin for help.
Two months ago, 10 other suspects appeared in court, charged with treason and other serious offences.
They were accused of working with a British citizen “to destabilise Nigeria by calling on the military to take over government from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu", according to the charge sheet.
All of the suspects in this case pleaded not guilty.
In total, 114 of those arrested during the protests were charged with treason. A judge has granted each of the defendants a 10m naira ($6,000; £4,700) bail.
Nigeria is experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation - annual inflation stands at more than 30% and food prices have rocketed.

https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nigeria-detains-tailors-who-made-russian-flags-anti-government-protests-2024-08-06/
ABUJA, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Nigeria has detained some tailors for making Russian flags that were waved during anti-government protests this week in northern states, the state secret police said, in a move that underscores concerns about increased Russian activity in western Africa.
The Department of State Services (DSS) also said in a post on X that it had detained some of the tailors' "sponsors", without elaborating. It said an investigation was ongoing. It did not say how many tailors or "sponsors" had been detained.
Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, described the brandishing of a foreign flag during anti-government protests as a "treasonable offence" after he held security talks with President Bola Tinubu on Monday.
"We have identified those (sponsoring them) and we are going to take serious action against that," Musa told reporters, also without elaborating.
Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians have been protesting since Aug. 1 against Tinubu's painful economic reforms that have seen a partial end to petrol and electricity subsidies, currency devaluation and inflation touching three-decade highs.
The protests have now ebbed after a deadly police crackdown.
In the northern states of Borno, Kaduna, Kano and Katsina, protesters were seen waving hundreds of Russian flags with some calling for a military takeover.
"We are waving the Russian flag because Tinubu's government is not listening to us. Russian presidents always support African nations' development, unlike other nations," Lawal Kodo, a 28-year old protester in Kano, told Reuters on Monday.
RUSSIA 'NOT INVOLVED'
The Russian embassy in Nigeria denied any involvement.
"The Government of the Russian Federation as well as any Russian officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way," the embassy said in a statement issued late on Monday.
The protests in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, come amid increased Western concerns over Russian security ties with the region, including countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger where military leaders have seized power in coups.
Security experts said many Nigerian protesters believe that the cost of living crisis is the result of reforms dictated to Tinubu by Western institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
"The Russian flags that appeared during the protests in northern states, and the calls for a military coup, reflect discontent over the government's policies rather than showcasing support for a Russia-backed military government," said Mucahid Durmaz, Senior Analyst at Verisk Maplecroft, a global risk intelligence firm.

A Nation Divided by Hardship: How hunger protests exposed Nigeria’s growing divisions
Tumblr media
Early Morning Tension in Abuja On Thursday, Abuja awoke to a city steeped in tension. At the MKO Abiola National Stadium, hundreds of anti-government protesters gathered, their voices rising against a backdrop of severe economic hardship and corruption. Prominent activists like VeryDarkMan, Deji Adeyanju, and Barr. Kingdom Okere led the charge, with chants of “End Bad Government” and “Bring Back Subsidy” reverberating through the air. Their placards bore stark messages: “We are hungry” and “Tinubu, where is the change?” Among the protesters was 32-year-old Jane Hingir, who shared her emotional struggle to make ends meet. “I’ve been struggling to make ends meet, but it’s getting harder every day,” she said, her voice filled with a mix of frustration and determination. Jane’s personal story mirrored the broader national struggle, highlighting the everyday challenges faced by many Nigerians. Among the protesters was 32-year-old Jane Hingir, who shared her emotional struggle. “I’ve been struggling to make ends meet, but it’s getting harder every day,” she said, her voice filled with a mix of frustration and determination. Jane’s personal story mirrored the broader national struggle, highlighting the everyday challenges faced by many Nigerians. Pro-Government Rally: A Contrast Meanwhile, in stark contrast, a pro-government rally took place at the Tinubu/Shettima campaign office same day. Organized by the Tinubu Support Group, the demonstration was marked by a calm and orderly atmosphere. Participants in this rally were given branded T-shirts and faze caps, displaying their support for President Tinubu. Led by Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hajia Iman Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the rally showcased a divided political landscape. The Dynamics of Hired Protesters A parallel demonstration involving hired protesters emerged. These individuals, recruited to oppose the anti-government protests, carried placards reading “No Protest.” Organized by a man who identified himself as Blessing Joel, they said that they were paid N5,000 each to participate. Many of these hired protesters came from the suburbs, highlighting how financial desperation influenced political demonstrations. Gabriel, an unemployed man from the capital, admitted that he joined the pro-government rally for the N5,000 offered. “I know things are bad in the country and the economy is not working, but the money was a big reason why I joined them,” he revealed. This highlighted how economic hardship often sways political participation. The March and Its ConsequencesBack to the story: at 12:02 pm on Friday, the anti-government protesters began their march towards Eagle Square. A heavy police presence, including FCT Commissioner of Police Bennett Igweh and security personnel from the Army Headquarters Garrison Command, NSCDC, and DSS, added to the tension. A helicopter hovered overhead, intensifying the atmosphere. By 12:39 pm, the protesters faced a harsh response at the Central Business District junction near the United Nations building. Security forces deployed tear gas, and reports emerged of a protester being feared shot dead while trying to escape. Despite this, the protesters regrouped at the MKO Abiola National Stadium by 1:50 pm, their determination undeterred. A Moment of Solace: Friday Juma’at Prayers In a poignant display of resilience, the Muslim faithful among the protesters observed Friday Juma’at prayers amidst the turmoil. This moment of solemnity stood in stark contrast to the earlier chaos, symbolizing their unity and unwavering commitment to their cause. We pray for peace, but we also pray for justice,” said Shehu Ibrahim, who led the prayers. The prayers not only provided spiritual solace but also renewed their resolve.Contrasting Responses: Anti-Government vs. Pro-GovernmentThe treatment of different protests revealed stark discrepancies. Anti-government protests faced severe crackdowns, while pro-government rallies proceeded with relative ease. This discrepancy drew criticism and highlighted perceived double standards in the government’s approach to dissent. The contrast became a focal point for critics, raising concerns about fairness and justice. Voices from the Government Amid the turmoil, government officials weighed in on the situation. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, addressed the nation on Wednesday, warning that the protests could lead to further violence and setbacks. His speech aimed to quell the unrest but failed to appease many. Read the full article

Unmasking Aare Kurunmi, TYF, and the Dubious Push for State Creation
Tumblr media
The past week has been very interesting, to say the least. Fake people were unmasked; traitors removed their veils, exposing their true selves, albeit with trickery. The “Yoruba Nationalist” Movement on X-Twitter, styled as the “Yoruba Conservative Movement,” has been growing steadily with new ideas and members. However, problems exist for the movement due to infiltration by liberals posing as conservatives. This issue stems from the movement's non-cohesive and leaderless nature on X, unlike on Facebook, where various groups had different leaders. The current schism is something to celebrate, as pretenders and other undesirables can now be easily identified and exposed, unlike when they were masked and role-playing as conservatives.
To proceed without an introduction would be denying you adequate information, so I’ll start with a brief introduction of the movement. The Yoruba Conservative Movement on X is an extension of the Yoruba Nationalist Movement on Facebook, specifically the one led by Adeyinka Grandson. To say otherwise would be to deny our history, our story, and the one that will define how and why we should undertake the struggle in a certain way.
Adeyinka Grandson, styled as the “Father of Yoruba Nationalism,” initiated the push for the Oduduwa Republic based on the economic and political injustices being perpetrated against the Yoruba people. He has been paying the price for his revolt against the system in the UK since he has always highlighted Britain’s role and condemned them accordingly. Before the 2019 elections, Adeyinka Grandson categorized Yoruba politicians into two distinct groups: those in the PDP as Yoruba liberals based on their history of being anti-Yoruba, and those in the APC as Yoruba conservatives. This move was intended to align the movement with local policies in Yorubaland to effect change through political routes without organized violence, which he has always advocated.
Continuing with a brief explanation, Ilana Oodua, another group that did not support Grandson’s approach, was formed with Prof. Banji Akintoye as their leader. These people from various Oduduwa Republic/Yoruba Nation camps came together; they started their movements based on Grandson’s idea but took a different approach. This other branch of Oduduwa Republic agitators supported various initiatives, from “the UN will get us Oduduwa Republic-Petition to the UN” to “Sunday Igboho’s approach," and later to “No elections in Yorubaland in 2023.” While these initiatives continued, Grandson and the YYF (his organization) maintained their support for Tinubu and their agenda of using Tinubu to achieve a Yoruba regional system of government.
All these initiatives failed woefully, and they all had to eventually follow Grandson’s plan after realizing the absurdity of their plans. The TYF, and Aare Kurunmi (obviously an alias), also stole this idea, justified it with their jargon, and managed to capture the community on X using poorly written arguments, especially due to the growing anti-Yoruba sentiments on X. Grandson could not exploit this as he was still imprisoned by the British after a politically motivated trial and sentence.
Anti-Yoruba sentiments on X have led Young Yoruba to band together into groups, following similar accounts to defend themselves against the growing hostility. X has notably become an anti-Yoruba platform, and the open Yoruba hate, although subtle at times, has radicalized Yoruba youths, leading to a conservative awakening.
However, every movement needs intellectuals. A few frauds managed to quickly organize, establishing themselves as the major mouthpieces and defenders against Obidients and other anti-Yoruba movements on the platform. While the revolution was a positive development, it created many leaderless individuals, posing a significant problem for the movement. Despite TYF and their fraudulent leaders dominating the space as intellectuals—a strategy they borrowed from Grandson’s speeches and campaigns—they didn't control the entire space. Recent opposition against them demonstrated their incomplete capture, although they still managed to control a considerable portion, much like Lucifer the Morning Star.
I'll be analysing their recent dubious push for more state creation rather than the goal of a regional system or Oduduwa republic; well, they're now self-styled "Awoists," as if they truly understand the term. But first I’ll look at the recent push for more states from a conservative/nationalistic standpoint before delving into their bastardization of Awoism.
As Yoruba Conservatives, the movement was founded with the goal of Yoruba liberation and aimed to re-establish the regional system suspended by Aguyi Ironsi and institutionalized by Yakubu Gowon. It's foolish for them to claim Awoism since the conservative and nationalistic ideology was born out of Awoism. Obafemi Awolowo, even after helping Yakubu Gowon during the war, quit because of Gowon's insincere push for regionalism. This raises the question of why people styling themselves as “Awoists” would knowingly support a move that would further fracture the Yoruba, give away more of our resources and earnings, reduce our power, and significantly strengthen our enemies.
The plan to support Tinubu is a move to enable us to drive our agenda for the Oduduwa Republic and not to give more power to the Fulani. To drive our agenda through Tinubu and get Nigeria restructured, giving power back to the Yoruba after decades of being oppressed and subjugated in opposition and assassination of our leaders. For now, it makes no sense for us to be more concerned with giving more power to the Fulani by giving them more states and more federal representatives. By supporting and getting miserly states, we’re selling our future for peanuts. Right now, with the enlightenment of several groups in the North (North central/middle belt peoples) and their opposition to being classified as Northerners, a term for Fulani-subjugated peoples, and the increasing ethnic nationalism and opposition to the Fulani, we can realistically get Nigeria restructured along ethnic lines, but these frauds, even whilst acknowledging this reality, continue promoting their agenda of evil and failure.
To even analyse how it will favour us will be stupidity. Why do we need to get more states when we’re in power? Why do we need more states when Tinubu is in power? If it were a Fulani man in power, would he work against his people? Is Tinubu against restructuring? Can’t we aggressively push our agenda, or are we weak? Are we pressuring Tinubu?
The root of the problem is that we aren’t pressuring Tinubu enough to enforce our agendas. While Grandson was proposing this, he said to pressure these politicians; if not, they’ll just do what they like when they go to Abuja. You don’t vote for someone and hope he does what he promised; you pressure him until he does what you want. Rather, we are just still even supporting Tinubu, while we should be aggressively applying pressure through various means to enable him to implement our agendas. As conservatives, we have no major win in this administration. Don’t talk about appointments because none of us are in this government; none of us are beneficiaries. Instead, we’re being roped into supporting Tinubu again while having gained nothing during his first term. Who does that? Slaves!!!
During the 2023 elections, we supported Tinubu and drove his agenda. In reality, we had an unofficial alliance with APC-Yoruba and their leader, Tinubu, which brought them benefits unlike us. They used our ideas and agendas, tapped into our movements, and our people to win their elections. They won, but what do we get? Nothing. Make no mistake; as I wrote earlier, the appointments are APC-Yoruba people, good for us because they’re Yoruba but of no use to us politically and ideologically because they’re not our people, will not do our will, and neither will pursue our agenda. So, we have no wins, but alias Kurunmi and his TYF goons want to push us into working without a reward. The answer is no. We aren’t slaves who work with no pay and in an alliance, every side has to win for it to continue. Where is our win? What will Tinubu give us? If he doesn't, then to hell with him
Tumblr media
Look at the tweet from this baboon; does this make sense at all? With nothing tangible for us as a conservative win, how does this concern us? To put it simply, the 2027 elections don’t concern us at all or in any way.
The push for states will only favour the Fulani, giving them a supermajority in parliament and derailing any attempt for a meaningful change in the constitution that we so require. To achieve great things requires sacrifice; we need to sacrifice the useless desire for states for that great dream that we want. If we succumb to this, only through violence would we be able to achieve our aims but that’s also not dishonourable.
For the net gainers, if more states are created, politicians in Abuja, particularly those in the House with no chance of becoming Governors, will now have opportunities to become Governors. Their lackeys will take posts in their respective state houses, leading to a new wave of numerous politicians and a significant waste of public funds. The people will be impoverished, and since we lack resource control, the Fulani and other beneficiaries of this fraud will have more money to fund weddings and goats while our people suffer with no prospects. However, at least the politicians will enjoy their newfound power and resources. That is TYF’s dream for you.
Take a look at the tweet below and decide for yourself if this guy is sensible. Even though he admits the rise in ethnic nationalism in the Middle Belt, he still manages to shoot himself in the foot by tweeting nonsense born out of his desire to keep our people imprisoned in this fraudulent system. If they can push for more states, why can't they push for restructuring? What we want is restructuring and resource control, not the proliferation of states. His argument is also flawed because no one wants a return to a regional government with just three regions. Nigeria should have regions based on ethnic lines: Yoruba region, Hausa-Fulani region, Kanuri region, Igbo region, Efik-Ibibio region, Ijaw region, Bariba region, Nupe region, Tiv region, Jukun region, and others. Each region can then decide to have as many states as they want. This way, each region controls its own destiny, security, economy, education, and more. Who wouldn't want that? The Fulani and the Igbo, of course, but they are now in the minority.
"Lets currently use what we have to achieve our aim within Nigeria" is a great line, and we can use Tinubu to get us a regional government. Simple. However, this guy just wants to maintain the status quo. He isn't even a supporter of the Oduduwa Republic.
Tumblr media
The flurry of tweets below reveals this guy as an impostor. I don't even need an expose; he's a fraud for not believing in secession. I salute Ilana Omo Oodua, as they've consistently advocated for the Oduduwa Republic, unlike this clown and his useless movement. If he didn't believe in secession, how did his support for Conservative ideology even begin? Claiming to be an Awoist is a scam; Awoists have always focused on achieving a regional system of government in Nigeria, but he clearly doesn't subscribe to that. It's also suspicious that he has no tweets from 2022 and earlier, signalling a Trojan horse in our midst to destroy the movement from within. I want to continue with the expose, but it makes no sense right now until we know who he is because he's neither a Nationalist nor an Awoist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His push for more state creation instead of a regional system or Oduduwa Republic is a deviation from the core principles of Awoism, which focused on regional autonomy and self-reliance; we’ll talk about that in another article.
To achieve our aims as Conservatives, we must band together because unity is the hallmark of a movement. The conservative movement is under attack by several forces, including APC, TYF, goons, impostors, and others, and it's only going to get worse. Unlike TYF with no plan, I have a grand plan, even though it's still in its conception stage, that will move us from this useless state and make Yoruba a world power. This present political state can only be improved by the grand replacement. Without replacing APC and other politicians in political positions, we cannot achieve our goal of using politics to get restructuring. We are the only ones who want it, and we are the only ones who can implement it. Expecting APC to implement our agenda is a mistake but can be remedied.
Also, forget about 2027; it's not our business. Our focus right now should be maximum pressure on Tinubu through several means to actualize the stages in our plan for regional autonomy and self-government. If we fall in line like dogs, we'll only get bones, not meat. It is imperative that we use what we have to get what we want. We need to be in opposition to Tinubu right now and not the other way around. If he couldn't give us anything now, he will not in his second term. We should be equal partners in a future alliance, not slaves who work without pay. They have their own interests, and so do we. We must actualize our own or come to an agreement with them, not become dogs defending their agendas everywhere. Our loyalty and allegiance are to the Yoruba people and ourselves, not Tinubu and APC, and certainly not alias Kurunmi the fraud.
Even if states were to be created, without resource control, the aim is defeated. So we must aggressively resist those who support and are pushing for new states while they could support restructuring this evil fraud. Please be watchful, and this is a prequel to my space on Saturday. You can join me to talk about alias Kurunmi and conservative ideology here

A report by the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF) has exposed a scandal involving Nigeria’s former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki. The investigation reveals that millions meant for combating Boko Haram were diverted to finance luxury properties in the United States. Sambo Dasuki, who served as National Security Adviser under former President Goodluck Jonathan, was previously accused of misappropriating billions intended for counterinsurgency efforts against Boko Haram. Read Also: Three Candidates Withdraw from Ondo Governorship Race According to the PPLAAF report, significant amounts of diverted funds were traced to upscale real estate in Los Angeles, California, and McLean, Virginia, through associates Robert and Mimie Oshodin. Luxury Real Estate and the Oshodins’ Involvement The investigation uncovered that at least $27 million was funneled from Dasuki’s office to the Oshodins, who subsequently invested similar amounts in U.S. properties. Records analyzed by PPLAAF included property deeds, bank statements, and corporate filings from both Nigeria and the U.S. What is the Nigerian Coast Guard Bill as CSOs Advise NASS, Tinubu to Reject It? “The diversion of public funds for luxury abroad undermines Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts,” stated Jimmy Kande, West Africa Director at PPLAAF. He added, “The U.S. must take a stronger stance against these financial abuses.” Despite Nigerian authorities alerting the U.S. Department of Justice about the allegations in 2018, the Oshodins continued acquiring properties. Lanre Suraj of the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) voiced his outrage: Funds intended to protect Nigerians were misused for the lavish lifestyles of a select few. Both nations must recover these stolen assets. Dasukigate and the Alleged Embezzlement Scheme Dasuki, appointed in 2012, was responsible for coordinating the fight against Boko Haram, an insurgency that has caused widespread violence in Nigeria. However, Nigerian authorities claim that Dasuki siphoned over $2 billion through fraudulent procurement deals. Following Muhammadu Buhari’s election in 2015, Dasuki was dismissed and later detained as part of an investigation dubbed “Dasukigate.” The PPLAAF report highlighted multiple assets tied to the scandal, including a $9.5 million mansion in Los Angeles, purchased on the same day Dasuki’s office transferred $12 million to the Oshodins’ furniture business. Court documents further revealed that the Oshodins possessed jewelry valued at millions, stored in their Los Angeles property. U.S. Oversight and Ongoing Real Estate Deals Despite the 2018 notification from Nigerian authorities, the Oshodins retained ownership of properties worth $20 million in the U.S. This has raised questions about the effectiveness of American oversight on illicit financial flows within the real estate sector. The U.S. has recently tightened measures to curb money laundering in real estate, requiring advisers to report cash purchases made by shell companies. However, Nigeria still struggles to recover assets linked to Dasukigate, as judicial delays persist. Controversy Surrounding McLean Mansion A $2.8 million mansion in McLean, Virginia, has become the focus of ongoing investigations. Nestled in an exclusive neighborhood, the mansion was linked to a family associate of Dasuki, raising suspicions about its funding source. The upscale property features luxury amenities, including a wine cellar and sauna, and blends in with residences owned by corporate executives and medical professionals. According to court filings, the mansion’s owner allegedly participated in laundering funds embezzled from Nigeria’s government. The Washington Post reported that this case highlights a broader issue of illicit funds entering the U.S. real estate market, often through opaque corporate structures. Broader Impact on Anti-Corruption Efforts The report has sparked renewed calls for greater cooperation between Nigeria and the U.
S. in tackling financial crimes. Bradley T. Smith, Acting Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Treasury Department, emphasized the need for stricter regulations: As the U.S. faces housing affordability challenges, stopping illicit funds from entering the market is more crucial than ever.” The Dasukigate scandal remains a key test of Nigeria’s resolve in fighting corruption, and ongoing efforts aim to trace and reclaim assets misappropriated during Dasuki’s tenure. In a related investigation, The Premium Times collaborated with The Washington Post to verify court documents and property records, painting a detailed picture of how embezzled funds flowed from Nigeria into U.S. real estate investments. The findings reflect the growing global concern about the misuse of real estate markets by corrupt officials to launder stolen wealth. This scandal, which diverted funds intended to fight terrorism, is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges Nigeria faces in its battle against corruption and financial crime.
