Revealing clothes aren't inherently objectifying. Women expressing their sexuality isn't inherently anti-feminist (or feminist, for that matter). But can these things be objectifying and anti-feminist? Absolutely. Like when the clothes or how they're captured only acknowledge the subject's sexual desirability, and not their personhood. Logically, images of Victoria in underwear that don't show her face should fall squarely in that category.

I've noticed that in the age of social media, usually when someone is overtly expressing their sexuality in the name of liberation, they're subconsciously performing for the patriarchy. We are literally conditioned to seek validation from the patriarchy from birth, so it's understandable. Also the patriarchy = society. So if you've got society's stamp of approval and the approval of choice feminists, it's easy to feel righteous and not think critically. However if sexual expression is done in a way that affirms the patriarchy, then it logically qualifies as anti-feminist.

You'll notice all these qualifiers because we don't know the intent of Victoria's behavior. Plus, this subject is so complex I personally can't decide on an opinion. I can believe that the band mostly wear what they want outside of photoshoots. They're experimenting and right now for Vic that means translucent body suits. I'm not complaining! However I don't think she's unaffected by the patriarchy encouraging her behavior based on those sexually submissive poses you mentioned. Maybe those poses were her idea of paying homage to the type of imagery thats been put on rock and roll album covers for decades. (Just look at The Rolling Stones most recent music video!) Maybe she's somehow empowered not out of misguided pseudo-feminism.

But, it begs the question: does intent matter? Regardless of Victoria's reasoning, the images are objectifying and therefore reinforce the patriarchy. I'm not gonna argue on whether or not its her responsibility to rectify that. These are just my thoughts.

Lety from lfmb really did say: "I may keep this affair going, make out with you, go on dates with you, heck I'll even go on a weekend getaway with you, but I draw the line at having sex with you again until you call off your engagement because I feel awful". Sounds about right 😂

If they wanted Lety to be the typical main character that can do no wrong, they could have modified the plot a bit by having Fernando and Marcia take a break from the relationship or something and that Lety only gave Fernando a chance during that period of time (financial mess aside). It seems to me that they hated the romance had to begin as an affair because it made Lety look bad, and that's why they added so much filler to downplay her part in it.

I think that a lot of Lety's arc in Acapulco was focused on healing from heartbreak and meeting someone better who could love her the way she deserved while Betty's was more about personal growth and boosting her self-esteem. Basing this on what I remember, I definitely need to re-watch to be certain.

I love the detail you mentioned about Fernando not being excited about Lety wanting to go to Omar's apartment. At least it shows they adapted the whole revenge arc so that it matched what was shown on the filler episodes. Didn't remember this.

As usual, your observations are spot on.

They had three opportunities to have sex and they didn't. Not once. And only two of them had the intention of sex. The germany trip was business related and paid for by the other company. But it was convenient that Lety got lost and Fernando had to look for her (even tho he said he was worried and yet had time to talk to omar and then change his clothes--but whatever) If you count after the commercial shoot he wanted to take her back to his place and she said no, that would be FOUR missed opportunities.

They had an anti-horny agenda despite them having pretty dream sex in Cuernavaca. And I forgot why they went to there, for some reason i thought it was a business trip but no, he whisked her away for the weekend with the intention of getting some sweet, sweet Lety love making. (I'm making it seem more interesting than it is and it was Not).

If you remove the Fernando\Marcia relationship by having them take a break, then you're doing away with the tension and pressure Fernando feels about being forced to make a commitment to her. He can't take a pause out of the engagement\relationship bc then Marcia will back her brother on dissolving the company and he can't let that happen while the company isnt even in his hands.

Like if Lety is as 'good' and 'pure' as they insist she is in the filler then she never would have agreed to be in a secret relationship with him. There's all these internal driving forces that make Betty (not a typo, i'm talking about the original real quick) make these decisons--it's a tier of choices she makes that concludes with her accepting to secretly date her boss. It didn't come out of nowhere. For the mexican adaptation to insist she's 'good' and 'pure' and to have Fernando himself say 'I corrupted her' is lame. Let Lety be morally grey.

They absolutely hated that the protagonist was presented as unattractive AND the other woman. Bc Televisa can only do three types of female protagonists---the poor virgin (thalia's televenovelas), beautiful poor women who want to be rich (ruby\theresa) and middle aged women who were wronged in the past and want revenge (la madrastra\victoria's ruffo's adult career).

Adapting Ysblf was a challenge bc they didn't want to take it seriously. I think we can agree that the original and the mexican adaptation have different tones. Ysblf, for all intents and purposes, is dramatic and serious. Yes, comedy is woven into it but it's done very carefully. In american english media terminology it would be considered a 'dramedy'. While the mexican adaptation is a full blown comedy, so much that when they have dramatic moments they feel out of place.

In regards to the filler---the ratings for this in 2006 were going crazy high. The mexican and US audience couldn't get enough of this. And it was in the same year as the Germany WC. It's not an accident that in the mexican adaptation Conceptos is a PR company instead of a clothes company. Televisa and Co used this novela as an opportunity to promote themselves and others. (Ysblf does this with Pantine and Mario Duarte's album and also trying to boost Cartagena Tourism. Yes, I'm aware of this, before anybody @'s me) Anyway, the filler was to promote televisa deportes and make the show longer bc it was such a hit. IIRC, this novela had low expectations. It was airing in the 5 pm slot in mexico and when the ratings got high, they started airing it at 8pm slot. And you know it made them a lot of money bc they gave the set a makeover and they changed the opening credits various times.

I think you're right, based on my foggy memory. But also, again--this was done bc that's when they decided to make the novela longer. They couldn't let Lety's time away be about her growth and boosting her self esteem because that leads to her makeover and they couldn't let Lety get the makeover bc the joke (they treated it as a joke, not me) that she's 'ugly' would die. And they thought their success lied solely on the fact their protagonist was 'ugly' but funny and quaint. (and also 'pure' and 'good').

I don't know where the pics are but I promise you, Lety was gonna get the makeover in Acapulco. There were bts shots of them testing Angelica Vale in a yellow dress on the beach with curly hair. They're out there, somewhere in google images. And we all waited for it to happen and then it didn't. Bc that's when they decided to make Aldo's part bigger and....well you know what happens.

I rewatched that scene and realized it was also done as part of their anti-horny agenda. Two birds, one stone. But yes, they did adjust accordingly to the filler. What I also noticed was, at Yuri and Mijares's event when Lety says she's leaving, Fernando grabs her hands only. He doesn't take her by the elbow like in the original. So not only are we working with an anti-horny agenda, we're also working with an anti-aggressive agenda as well. Bc I'm assuming it would have been too aggressive and scary to have Fernando grab and drag her by the elbow.

The Priory of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon is an AMAZING high fantasy book! the romance is def a subplot but it’s still wlw and i would highly recommend this if you’re a fan of fantasy

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo is a historical fiction book thats set in San Francisco in the 50s and it is amazing!! it talks about lesbian culture at the time, the red scare, anti-asian racism, and other topics. it’s SO good!

Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers is about a queer, black woman trying to figure out life (kind of a coming of age but she’s already an adult so not quite) and she meets her will-be wife and it’s just very touching. my only thing is that the author has a very unique style that i liked but it may not be everyones cup of tea.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid may be kind of overdone but I promise it’s worth it!! the characterization is so good and it’s very cool how the author incorporates media clippings into the story. would def recommend!!

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee!! mmmm dark academia and cults, my FAVORITE niche. this book has also got witchcraft and a highly unreliable narrator! it is a bit pretentious but i think it’s important to remember that the book is critiquing academia too.

i also always have to mention Mary Oliver because i ADORE her poetry, she’s one of my favorite poets of all time. if you’re looking for love, i’d recommend her collections Felicity or Thirst.

also, i know this is super overdone, but just watch She-Ra. it’s so good. it’s wonderful. just do it.

NOW THIS IS A STORY. so back in 2008, i always watched chinese variety shows on tv bc they were the only channels we got at home. so one day i was watching a show and there was a group of cute boys who appeared and i was like !!! and then i followed them for a bit through these shows but then like i eventually forgot about them. but then in 2010, there were some reruns airing and i found out the group i liked back in 2008 was called super junior m. at the time, i didn’t realize the ‘m’ was important so i just searched up super junior on youtube. and then it was a downward spiral from there and a decade later, i’m still stuck here in this blackhole yep

This is especially true in BC. Washington state has had a lot of outbreaks with Seattle being hit the worst, yet there’s not one but two direct ferries between Seattle and downtown Victoria that are still allowed to run. I’ve even heard that there’s been an influx of American tourists who cite the closure of so many things in Washington state as the reason why they decided to cross the border into Canada.

I can’t speak for other provinces, but neither Trudeau nor companies shutting down travel with a hotspot just south of the border and where anti-vaxxers congregate does not inspire confidence and is getting more worrisome. Especially given the age of the population in Victoria and on Vancouver Island in general, and how all the deaths in BC thus far were in a care home in Vancouver. You can’t shut down all travel between Victoria and Vancouver, so if one city starts having an outbreak, the other one will get it, too.

CANTLON'S CORNER: WOLF PACK OFF-SEASON REPORT VOLUME 2

The Blueshirts acquired a right-handed shooting defenseman, Adam Fox, and signed him to a contract on Thursday. The highly-regarded two-way playing Fox couldn’t come to a deal with the Hurricanes, so Fox, who was drafted originally in the third round (66th overall) in 2016 by Calgary was traded in the Doug Hamilton deal. The junior defenseman said he would return for his senior year at Harvard. Then he would be able to go the free agent route since he would be 22 and unsigned next spring. This allowed him under the current CBA to become an unrestricted free agent and seek a deal with any of the other 31 NHL teams.  Carolina opted to make a move now, gaining a second-round pick in this year’s draft from the Rangers and a third rounder in 2020. The third-round pick will be converted to a second-round pick if Fox plays 30 NHL games next season. Fox’s early hockey resume is quite extensive. He had 116 points in 97 games with the Crimson and led the NCAA in points scored. He was a Hobey Baker finalist and played on two US WJC teams, winning gold in 2017 and bronze in 2018. He was a First team All American all three season at Harvard, this season he captured ECAC Player of the Year and Ivy League Player of the Year. He was named the 2019 Walter Brown Award winner as the best American college player in New England and was named Harvard’s John Tudor team MVP for the season. This makes the already defensive slot (presently 18 defensemen as of today) an even more crowded field. Among the blueliners, the Rangers have four making upwards of $4 million plus, which means trades and contract burials are coming. This answers the question on two Group 6 defenseman, John Gilmour and Rob O’Gara, who will more than likely not be resigned come July 1st. Fox, with his newly minted Rangers credentials, will play for Team USA at the upcoming World Hockey Championships in Slovakia. Part of that is because Rangers GM Jeff Gorton is on the US squad’s Advisory panel, and the team's GM is current Rangers assistant GM, and Hartford GM Trumbull native, Chris Drury. The Fox deal was announced last Thursday, and Friday morning the team officially announced that they signed last year’s number one selection, (9th overall) the 6’4 right-winger, Vitali Kravtsov, to a three-year entry-level deal. The 18-year-old, left-handed shooting right-winger played for Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia-KHL0 and had a very strong WJC in Vancouver/Victoria, BC. Both Kravtsov and Fox will make $925K-NHL/$70K-AHL on their ELC deals. Kravtsov has a European assignment clause in his deal. It might be classified as an anti-Hartford clause. It likely has a pre-determined time frame for him to play in Hartford. If it's exceeded then he could invoke the clause and be assigned to Europe to continue his development. Shestyorkin was a two-time KHL All-Star and captured one KHL Gagarin Cup in 2016-17. There is a chance the trio could start next season in Hartford to make the pro adjustment for possibly a month or two, but the new coaching staff in Connecticut's capital has not been named and it won't until the Rangers announce their new President either at the middle or end of this month. No signing is expected for defenseman Yegor Rykov who played for HK Sochi (Russia-KHL) this year and was acquired from the Devils at the trade deadline in the Michal Grabner deal. One other prospect of note is on another goalie, Olof Lindbom (no relation to former Wolf Pack Johan Lindbom) who was drafted in the second-round (39th overall) last year. He will play next season for both Mora IK (Sweden-SHL) and Mora IK J-20 team in the Super Elite junior-level league. Lindbom, now age 18, would be eligible to play for the Sweden WJC team. He played with Djurgarden IF (SHL) and J-20 teams this season but missed most of the year with an injury. November 29th, 2001 - Katsuki Yuuri is born in Hasetsu, Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.

August 10th, 2013 - The Breach opens in the Challenger Deep of the Pacific Ocean. The Kaiju dubbed ‘Trespasser’ comes through the Breach and destroys San Francisco, and after destroying other cities after traveling 35 miles in six days, it was killed.

February 5th, 2014 - After months of silence, the second Kaiju attack happens: ‘Hunlun’ appears and attacks the Filipino capital of Manila. The military kills it East of the city with a nuclear weapon, but the creature’s excrement contaminates the environment of the city.

June 1st, 2014 - Third attack. ‘Kaiceph’ attacks Cabo San Lucas of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, eventually killed in a nuclear strike which also takes out a good portion of the city.

September 2nd, 2014 - Fourth attack. ‘Scissure’ attacks Sydney, Australia. the military attempts to kill it before it reaches the city with a nuclear missile, met with failure. The attack from Scissure lasts 3 days, the military finally managing to lure it away to kill it with a missile -- while destroying half the city in the process.

Sometime after the fourth attack, 2014 - Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld proposes the idea of the Jaeger at a conference in Seoul, South Korea after seeing his son play with a toy robot and monster in his room. The idea is approved by the UN. He meets Caitlin Lightcap and the first Jaeger prototype begins construction in Pittsburgh.

Early January, 2015 - The Mark-1 prototype Jaeger, Brawler Yukon, finishes construction.

January 30th, 2015 - Brawler Yukon is launched for its first demonstration, test piloted by USAF Captain Adam Casey. Before he can begin, the neural load is too much for Casey to handle alone, resulting in a seizure and his death.

February 18th, 2015 - Sergio D’Onofrio pilots Brawler Yukon in another demo, managing to make it walk before he also suffers a seizure from the neural load, though Caitlin manages to connect with Sergio through the bridge and thus creates the first Drift. The demonstration is a success, and the Jaeger program is authorized by Pan Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC).

April 23, 2015 - The Kaiju ‘Karloff’ attacks Vancouver before the first line of Jaegers are ready for deployment. Brawler Yukon is sent out for a field test, piloted by Caitlin Lightcap and Sergio D’Onofrio. the attack ends in victory.

Autumn 2015 - The Jaeger Academy, on Kodiak Island, is opened.

January 10th to 12th, 2016 - Kaiju attacks have begun increasing. The Category II Kaiju dubbed as ‘Isonade’ attacks Northern Kyushu in Japan, moving from the Ōita Prefecture to the Saga Prefecture in the span of two days in its journey toward Fukuoka. Katsuki Yuuri, now 14, manages to evacuate from Hasetsu with his older sister, Mari, age 21, in time before Isonade wipes Hasetsu off the map. They witness this from an evac helicopter. They are sent to live in a shelter in Kawasaki for a month.

February 2016 - Yuuri and Mari end up being sent to Detroit, Michigan. Yuuri meets a boy around his age named Phichit Chulanont and the two become fast friends. They end up deciding that they’ll apply for the Jaeger Academy later.

May 15th, 2016 - Onibaba attacks Tokyo.

August to December, 2016 - Viktor Nikiforov, age 18, begins his training at the Jaeger Academy, graduating at the top of his class around his 19th birthday, and is sent into battle practically right after. Katsuki Mari also trains at the Jaeger Academy and graduates as a Jaeger Engineer officer for J-Tech.

January 19th, 2017 - Viktor Nikiforov, age 19, now stationed at the Russian Shatterdome in Vladivostok, is sent to fight the Category II Kaiju ‘Vagabond’ with his partner Nikita Sadovsky in the Mark-3 Jaeger ‘Silver Odyssey’. The battle, being Viktor’s first against a real Kaiju, goes smoothly and ends in a clean victory before it can reach Khabarovsk. Not long after, he quickly becomes considered one of the best Jaeger pilots in the program.

August 2016 to August 2018 - Yuuri and Phichit are under the supervision of Celestino Cialdini, a PPDC officer.

August to December, 2018 - Yuuri and Phichit, ages 16, are accepted into the Academy, their acceptance so young mainly due to Celestino’s influence and Mari’s presence as an officer. Due to Yuuri’s anxiety and emotional vulnerability, many thought he wouldn’t make it through the first cut, but he quickly showed he was far too stubborn and determined to give up so easily. The two are shown to be Drift compatible in tests and simulated battles, and Yuuri shows exceptional talent in piloting.

February 25th, 2019 - Yuuri and Phichit, stationed at the Shatterdome in Los Angeles, are sent in the Mark-4 Jaeger ‘Glacier Zero’ to fight a Category II Kaiju by the name of ‘Axel’ making its way toward Malibu. The fight is a success, the pilots only suffering minor injuries and little of the city harmed. Some question the morality of having a 17 and 16 year old pilot and fight.

June 2019 - Viktor and Nikita are moved to the Mark-5 Jaeger ‘Tempest Noble’, and soon after they take down the Category III Kaiju ‘Siren’ making its way toward Taiwan.

February 2020 - After the Category III Kaiju ‘Knifehead’ exhibited a learning curve that partially destroyed the Mark-3 Jaeger, Gipsy Danger, and killed one of its pilots, the PPDC’s downfall begins.

December 1st, 2022 - A Category III Kaiju dubbed ‘Kingpin’ advances on Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Yuuri (21) and Phichit (20) are sent out in Glacier Zero. When they begin to attack, Yuuri’s begins to panic and it skyrockets as he latches onto the memory of Isonade destroying Hasetsu in 2015, disrupting the Neural Handshake and causing him to fire off in response to the memory, rather than attacking Kingpin. The battle almost ends in failure, both pilots nearly dying in the process due to being unable to fall back in sync and Yuuri’s episode. Glacier Zero is set to ‘self destruct’ as a last resort and both pilots are ejected, Kingpin laying waste to half of Victoria before the Jaeger explodes and the military flies in to take care of the rest. Yuuri is grounded indefinitely, and Phichit is permanently relieved of duty after they’ve both fully recovered. He works alongside his sister at the LA Shatterdome.

October 13th, 2024 - Viktor (26) loses his co-pilot Nikita in a battle against the Category IV Kaiju ‘Blackout’. The sudden loss of the other pilot and Viktor forcing himself to bring down the Kaiju almost resulting in his own death causes heavy mental scarring. He passes out right after the Kaiju is killed.

November 2024 -

With news that the Shatterdomes will be steadily shut down with the UN closing the Jaeger Program, Viktor arrives at the Shatterdome in Hong Kong along with the Tempest Noble from Vladivostok on the 2nd.

Yuuri (22) and Mari (30) arrive at the Shatterdome in Hong Kong from Los Angeles on the 4th. Yuuri is desperate to make himself useful again, to pilot again. Knowing Viktor Nikiforov is there makes his anxieties spike, since he knew of him and knew just what a name he made for himself in the Jaeger Program, even admired him. One of the best, if not the best, pilots according to the PPDC. Yuuri would’ve been in the top 5, were it not for the incident with Kingpin in Victoria.

With the recent death of his co-pilot, Viktor is in search of a new one. Multiple men and women try out (many would love to pilot alongside him, after all) though none stand a chance. Impulse drives Yuuri to step up, sparring with Viktor for a chance to be his co-pilot. The two last for a while against one another, before Viktor finally sends Yuuri on his ass. Immediately, he decides Yuuri will be his co-pilot for the Tempest Noble. They sync in the Jaeger with seemingly no issue, showing their compatibility despite the fact they were both practically strangers to one another.

They definitely bicker, though. A lot. What with Viktor’s cluelessness and clumsiness when it comes to handling other people’s emotions (especially when seeing the memories of his copilot), and Yuuri’s sensitivity and anxiety and stubbornness, they can butt heads a lot. In the end, they work extremely well together and grow attached quickly.

December 2024 -

After Yuuri turns 23 and Viktor turns 27, they end up in a relationship despite the disapproval of higher-ups, worried it would interfere. It makes their connection stronger, but that also proves a risk of one of them becoming severely damaged mentally should the other die or be ripped out without warning.

January 1st, 2025 - ‘Mutavore’ attacks Sydney, breaking through the Anti-Kaiju Wall.

Castle Hill Huddersfield

Castle hill is an ancient monument in Almondbury overlooking Huddersfield. The hilltop has been settled for at least 4,000 years and shows the remains of a late-Bronze Age or early Iron Age univallate hillfort with a single raised bank, a later Iron Age multivallate hillfort, a 12th-century motte and bailey castle and the site of a deserted medieval village.Victoria Tower on the summit of Castle Hill is by far the most prominent landmark in Huddersfield.The hill has been a place of recreation for hundreds of years and the remains of past occupation have made it a subject for legend, speculation and scientific study. It is located on UK Maps at grid reference SE152140.

The first people to visit Castle Hill were probably hunters and gatherers of the Mesolithic age, camping amongst the forests which at that time covered the land. In the Neolithic and Bronze Age, there appears to have been widespread travel or trade along the river valleys connecting the Yorkshire Wolds, the Peak District and the Mersey and Ribble river mouths. This is shown by various characteristic types of stone and bronze tools in a place far from their points of origin. The hillfort was constructed in the early Iron Age, around 555 BC taking up the whole hilltop. Modifications were made around 43 AD to improve the defences, probably in response to the threat from the Roman invaders.

Excavations on part of the hillfort in 1970 demonstrated that Castle Hill had at some stage suffered from a severe episode of burning. Vitrified forts such as Castle Hill are rarely found in England.

The banks and ditches that remain are more likely to be the result of recutting and other alterations carried out during the Middle Ages, and modified by centuries of erosion. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, Almondbury became part of the Honour of Pontefract, which was held by the de Laci family. They established a small castle on the hill. It is mentioned in a charter of King Stephen to Henry de Laci of about 1142 to 1154. Archaeological excavation has provided a wooden stake, radiocarbon-dated to the late 1140s, and a coin of about 1160. It can be assumed that the castle was complete and occupied by the 1140s.

In the early 14th century there was an attempt to found a settlement in the lower bailey, and possibly elsewhere on the hill. Aerial photography revealed a central roadway flanked by regularly laid-out plots. It was probably abandoned by the 1340s, although memory of it may have lingered, since the map of Almondbury drawn up in 1634 marks the hill as the site of a town. After the end of the Middle Ages, Castle Hill remained uninhabited until the early 19th century. Its prominent position made it an ideal site for a warning beacon, as part of a network of such beacons on other prominent hills all over the country, spreading out in lines from the coast.

Castle Hill's flat top was a venue for large political, religious and other meetings. Chartist rallies were held at least four times, in 1843 and 1848. During the great weavers’ strike of 1883 a rally of between two and three thousand people braved bitter weather to listen to speeches by union leaders.

An anti-aircraft battery was built near the south-east end of the hill and a range finder is located at the north side of the outer bailey, the remains of which may be seen, and pieces of high-explosive shell casings are occasionally picked up in the adjacent fields.

Today the hill retains the remnants of all its past uses, and is a popular site for local people and tourists.

THE GREAT OCTOBER SOCIALIST REVOLUTION & ITS IMPACT ON BC LABOUR

The example of the Russian Revolution captured the imagination of BC workers and demonstrated it was possible for workers to seize state power and build a socialist economy and society, ending exploitation.

British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest are well known for their long history of labour militancy going back to the late 1800s. In Vancouver even before the city’s Charter was granted in 1886, workers were already organized by the Knights of Labour, who were early champions of the industrial form of unionism embracing all workers, skilled and unskilled. They based their organizational principles and labour philosophy on Robert Owen’s Grand National Consolidated Union in England. Although it was primarily for workers, its rules opened membership to anyone over the age of 18 years “who worked or had at any time worked for wages”, except “individuals who made a living manufacturing, selling or handling intoxicating liquor”. Doctors, lawyers and bankers were also barred.  The leadership was opposed to strikes, but the militancy of the membership usually resulted in their being a leading force in most of the great militant strikes of that period, with the exception of the battle for the eight-hour workday, although they did play a major part in that struggle as well. Samuel Gompers described them as “undertaking to wipe out the lines of industry and make one whole organization of all classes of labour.”

The craft unions were not much in existence out on the west coast at that time. There was a printers’ union and a shipwrights’ and caulkers’ union, both of them in Victoria.

The Knights of Labour played a pivotal role in many political and social battles in the early 1900s, organizing emergency relief wherever communities were faced with disaster, such as when the Great Vancouver Fire was started by the CPR slash fires in the bush. The Knights of Labour were instrumental also in defeating wealthy business representatives in many local elections. They campaigned for funds to provide relief for workers involved in labour battles all around North America and internationally.

They were directly involved in electoral politics, fielding a candidate for the commons from a workers party, the Reform Party in New Westminster. In Victoria and Nanaimo they ran candidates under the Workingman’s Party banner. These were the very first labour candidates in the west.

The unfortunate bad mark on their history was their decidedly racist attitude towards Chinese labour. They played a major role in institutionalizing the racist two-tiered wage system for the Chinese which lasted for decades. They even initiated blacklists of businesses that employed Chinese and called for boycotts.

The craft union movement started making major progress in British Columbia around 1880-90. Almost all existing trades were represented by 1889, when the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council was organized. The influence of the Knights of Labour began to decline as the Trades and Labour Council became the direct connection to the main current of labour activism in Canada. There were numerous battles at this time relating to winning the nine-hour workday and the eight-hour workday. These struggles were led by the craft unions for the benefit of their members. As the Knights of Labour receded into the background, so did efforts to organize unskilled workers. The major influence now became the craft union organizations, represented in Canada by the Dominion Trades Conrgress.

At the beginning of the 1900s there were 160 trades locals in BC, and in Vancouver there was nearly a 100% organization of skilled workers. This was an era of almost continuous labour strikes for wages and better working conditions. Working conditions did gradually get better, but not without struggle, and political action to secure provincial labour legislation, which finally recognized some basic conditions that we take for granted today.

At the same time there was another and growing movement that was clearly socialist in its outlook, the Western Federation of Miners, which rivalled the Trades and Labour Council of Vancouver for leadership of the labour movement in BC and the West. They actually officially adopted as their own the entire program of the Socialist Party of America at their Denver Convention in 1902. There was also a difference of attitude between the Trades and Labour Council of Vancouver, on the one hand, and the Dominion Trades Congress and the American Federation of Labour, on the other. The main difference was the Trades and labour Council’s call for independent labour political action.

During this time there was continuous pressure from outside the organized trade union movement in BC for industrial unionism and political independence from the old line capitalist parties. There was a lot of sympathy for the idea of non-craft “industrial unionism”, and the Trades and Labour Council of Vancouver was among those who were in support of this idea. They passed a resolution instructing their organizational committee to affiliate any new unions organized for which there was no craft union to the American Labour Union.

In 1905 the Industrial Workers of the World made their appearance in BC and right away the Western Federation of Miners and the American Labour Union affiliated to the new group. 1906 saw the first IWW chapter organized in Vancouver. The history of the IWW all over North America, including BC, was one of brave and heroic struggles, with many martyrs to the class struggle. Fighters like Joe Hill, Frank Little, Wesley Everett. Historic labour battles were led and won by the IWW, improving wages and working conditions for many thousands of workers. There are many books written about the IWW and their battles.To recount everything here today would take many, many hours. However, it is worth looking at what ended the influence of the IWW in conjunction with the Russian Revolution, because that event brought to a head the simmering differences that had been debated for many years in the world socialist movement, and workers in BC were not immune to these trends.

The First World War brought to the fore one of the most divisive issues facing the socialists in the Second International, over the question of war and peace. Significant sections of the Second International were prepared to take a nationalist position and support their native capitalists and imperialists in what was clearly another imperialist war. Many others, true internationalists, quite correctly pointed out that workers would be killing workers and the only winners would be the capitalist system and imperialism. This destroyed the Second International as an effective revolutionary socialist voice. The IWW to its credit was opposed to the War.

Locally, capitalists took full advantage of the war to ship thousands of young workers off to Europe to be slaughtered and used the draft laws to weed out trouble-makers at home, such as Ginger Goodwin. The leaders of the IWW split into two factions over whether to be a political movement or to be simply an economistic “job union”. This battle raged for a number of years, through the end of the war and the Russian Revolution. It was never resolved within the organization and was a factor ending the major influence of the IWW.

Despite a huge anti-war protest in Canada, the official, non-IWW trade union movement made no unpatriotic noises and would not take issue with the War. They neither supported nor opposed it, making no effort to resist the blood-bath that was taking off many of their members. However, in BC the Federation of Labour and the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council called for a general strike when the first draft resisters were arrested, but it never took place, largely owing to a lack of support from the Dominion Trades Congress and therefore the local craft unions. This almost resulted in the BC Federation of Labour and the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council withdrawing from the Dominion Trades Congress. In the West there was a large anti-war resistance among workers, but there was no appetite for resistance on the part of the Dominion Trades Congress and the American Federation of Labor.

However, the Russian Revolution caught the workers’ imagination, as representing a major victory for the working class amid the slaughter and carnage taking place in Europe. The name Lenin became well known to workers in BC. The Vancouver Trades and Labour Congress distributed a number of Lenin’s pamphlets, and many workers proudly proclaimed themselves Bolsheviks.

When the First World War ended, and the imperialists turned their attention to destroying the new Soviet state, the Trades and Labour Council unanimously passed a resolution demanding that Canada’s troops be withdrawn from Russian territory, and all aggression and intervention be stopped. The BC Federation of Labour did the same, but unfortunately no direct action was taken to prevent the shipment of war materials from the west coast to trhe counterrevolutionary forces in Russia, although some individuals refused to handle war cargo, and several longshoremen had unfortunate incidents where artillery parts “accidently” dropped into the water.

There was great enthusiasm for the new Soviet state, and the weakening of the IWW as an organization left the field open for yet another attempt to organize industrial unions, unfortunately from outside the main labour movement. In 1919 the One Big Union (OBU) was formed as a joint project of the BC Federation of Labour and the most progressive elements of the Alberta Federation of Labour. Resolutions passed at the 1919 Calgary conference demonstrated the revolutionary spirit of the founders. Revolutionary greetings were sent to the new Soviet republic and to the Spartacus League of Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht in Germany. The conference embraced the slogan of the “dictatorship of the proletariat”. These bold provocative declarations opened the new OBU to wide attacks from the capitalists, who were extremely hostile to anything remotely revolutionary following the Russian Revolution. They were able to make the argument that the OBU was starting a revolution. The Winnipeg General Strike and sympathetic strikes in Vancouver and other Western cities were described as attempts to set up soviets “in our democratic country”. The OBU was doomed before it was born. With then help of all the reactionaries, particularly those in the labour movement, it was utterly broken, and many good militant unionists were once again on the outside of the main labour movement.

The IWW and OBU made the same fundamental mistake, in my opinion. They tried to combine a revolutionary political program with the task of an ordinary trade union, the fight for better wages and working conditions. They tried to be a political party and a trade union all in one package. A union should take in all workers in a given workplace or occupation, regardless of their attitude towards politics. It cannot be a revolutionary party, though it may by majority vote give its active support to particular governmental measures and campaigns, and so help the revolutionaries’ struggle.

A significant number of trade union activists in BC who were inspired by the Russian Revolution began to take more interest in the revolutionary writings of Lenin and the Bolsheviks, and, together with revolutionary- minded members of the Socialist Party of North America and the Socialist Party of Canada, they came together to form the Communist Party of Canada, at first known as the Workers Party of Canada. In Vancouver some of the first members were J. Kavanagh from the OBU, J.M. Clark from the Lumberworkers, Bill Farnham from the Canadian National Union of Ex-servicemen, Bill Bennett from the Socialist Party of Canada and Dick Higgins from the IWW.

The new Party took an active role in promoting the unity of all labour and advocated not only organizing industrial unions, but uniting the entire labour movement, both the craft and industrial unions. They took immediate steps to gather the workers into one organization. Their first action was to invite all trade unions, unemployed organizations and working-class political parties to a conference to discuss the setting up of a labour party that would be all-embracing. These efforts proved unsuccessful, but the idea was correct.

The example of the Russian Revolution demonstrated to many revolutionary-minded activists that it was possible for workers to seize state power and build a socialist economy and society, ending exploitation. This fundamentally changed the outlook of labour activists, who were struggling with the ideas faced by generations before them over what the relationship should be between political action and trade union action. The ideas of anarcho- syndicalism had proven to be untenable, but their organizations had demonstrated the power of organized labour. The ideas coming from the Communist International put forward a more logical approach. The working class must have its own independent organizations to defend wages and working conditions and to represent the interests of workers in government and society. The working class potentially has the power to bring down the capitalist system and put an end to war and poverty forever. There needs to be an all-encompassing revolutionary movement that includes all revolutionary-minded organizations, including those political parties that work for the same goals.

The principles of unity, struggle and peace first put forward by the Workers Party of Canada and later the Communist Party have not changed, although tactics and strategies, alliances and many other conditions constantly change and evolve. But the basic needs and principles involved in building a movement for social change remain the same.
