My love language is food and right now I’m in pain and miserable so here’s food memories that make me feel better.

Even though I can’t eat anything other than cold mashed potatoes bc I got my wisdom teeth out.

When my dad died I spent a lot of time at my best friends house because I didn’t want to be home. Her mom was Moroccan and would just feed and feed me and would send me home with plates full of food. I remember small cakes made with rose water and honey and these fantastic cabbage rolls. My friend stayed here for college but her family moved back to Saudi Arabia. I wish I could make the cabbage dish again because it reminds me of being loved and safe but all the recipes she sent me where in Arabic. I later learned that she was so kind to me because her own dad died when she was my age. I miss her so much.

When I was a little kid my mom used to let us open pomegranates on the patio in our underwear and by the time we had eaten them we were covered in red stains. We had the best times of our lives. Pomegranates are my favorite fruit now because of that.

Also when I was young we didn’t have a lot of money and my mom would proudly sit down for dinner and say “this meal only cost $2.57 for all of us” and stuff like that. I’m lucky that even if I don’t have any money I can take care of myself and others.

I was dating this man and on our anniversary he took me to the spot where we first kissed. It was called Park Avenue. This old brick street with shops and restaurants up and down it. We had first kissed after walking around the lake. It was on a bench hidden under these tall trees and Spanish moss. On our anniversary we watched the sun set on the lake and he gave me a ring. After we made promises to each other we walked to a small Italian restaurant on the avenue. I had the mushroom ravioli and it was covered in pine nuts. Maybe it was the bliss and the feeling of being in love but I could never find mushroom ravioli that tasted like that. I can never go back to that restaurant or that day. Or that man.

I make really good garlic bread even though it takes such a long time to make. I make garlic confit and then make a paste out of the roasted garlic and mix it with soft butter and fresh herbs I grow in the windowsill and Parmesan cheese and spread that on bread and let it bake into it.

I’m always in charge of making birthday cakes in my family. It’s my favorite thing to bake because it makes people really happy. I spend a lot of time on the cakes because I just love my family so much and I want them to have the best.

I went up to Wisconsin and stayed with my cousins in their cabin during the summer. The adults were drinking and the kids were climbing trees and shit. My aunt gave me her car keys and told me to go to this shop where they harvest and sell cranberries and everything cranberry flavored. They have this alcohol she loves and she usually sneaks me some. I wasn’t twenty one so I took my baby cousin and was gonna see if they carded me. It was a really small town and there was only one road with stores. Me and my cousin couldn’t find it so we went to the Walmart to buy food and a swimsuit bc I forgot mine. She saw a dragon fruit and begged me to get it. When we got back everyone was grilling and drinking and me and her sat on the porch step and split a dragon fruit. All of my family lives far away. It’s just my mom, my brother, my grandma, and I in Florida. I miss my family and nights like these. I’m the oldest cousin so when I go and visit I like to scare them. They are fascinated with the sharks, alligators, and iguanas we have here. They don’t realize that alligators don’t like walk on the sidewalks here.

I used to be a nanny for this family and I’d make them dinner because their mom came home at like 11. Anything I made they would LOVE. They liked soup a lot and I would really just throw anything in a pot and they would act like I cooked them a five course meal. I taught the little girl how to make bread from scratch. I have never felt as appreciated as I did then.

Sorry for the long post I just enjoy thinking about food I can’t eat and people I wish I could see.

MANILA – Over 21,000 overseas and local jobs will initially be offered at the two-day online job fair next week, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said on Saturday.

The online job fair, to be held on December 10 and 11, is organized by the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) with partner agencies coinciding with the 87th anniversary of the DOLE on Tuesday.

In a statement, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III urged jobseekers to take advantage of the fair, with more than 600 domestic companies and 16 licensed recruitment agencies participating in offering local and overseas vacancies.

He added that they are adopting a virtual job fair system in compliance with government restrictions on mass gatherings.

The e-jobs for local placement is in collaboration with digital portal Mynimo.com and the Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs) across the country.

To access the online job fair, applicants may visit the POEA website at www.poea.gov.ph.

For overseas jobs, most vacancies are for factory workers, nurses, nursing aides, and care workers.

There are also vacancies for engineers, CAD operators, telecommunications rigging technicians, maintenance technicians, carpenters, foremen, laborers, and building cleaning workers.

Also offered are posts for supervisor, physical fitness coach, cake decorator, cook, food server, restaurant worker, waiter, waitress, counter service staff, and service staff.

The countries of destination are Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Myanmar, Jordan, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Ghana, Micronesia, Turks and Caicos, and Palau.

Bello advised applicants to be ready with the digital copies of their resume or curriculum vitae and other application requirements, such as a certificate of employment for those formerly employed, diploma, and transcript of records.

Job seekers are asked to log-in their credentials to e-registration and click the name of the ongoing job fair. The system will then show the recommended job that matches the applicant’s preference.

KENYANS QUERY MAIZE IMPORTS AMID PRICE HIKES…. The rising cost of maize has been prompting jokes about how the food staple is now a luxury in Kenya. Kenyans have been facing shortages of basic foods following a drought last year that affected the country's food stocks. The shortage is such that the price of maize flour, with which people make the staple ugali, is currently twice its usual level, and people living close to the border with neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania have taken to shopping there. One man is even reported to have killed his wife over a portion of ugali that was too small, The Star website reports. The government last week imported 30,000 tonnes of maize flour, but Kenyans have been eyeing the shipment of food with suspicion, the Standard Digital website says. Questions have been raised as to whether the government is colluding with companies to take advantage of the shortage, and suspicions have been exacerbated by pointed questions as to how long the government took to import the maize, and initial uncertainty over where it came from. The government first said it was from Mexico. When this raised questions about how the shipment could have arrived in the six days that it did, the government clarified it had been imported into South Africa last year but not used, Capital FM reports. Deputy President William Ruto has called the questions "unfair", asking, on Citizen TV: "Do you sincerely believe that we can play that kind of game with a very serious issue like the lives of people? The food of the people. Don't you think that is dangerous?" The government has also since announced it will subsidise the import of maize to enable the price of a 2kg bag of flour to return to its usual price of about 90 shillings ($0.87, £0.67).

AUSTRALIANS SIZZLE OVER VEGAN SAUSAGE OFFER….  One of the great Australian traditions, the community event known as the sausage sizzle, became a bone of contention this weekend after customers of a well-known DIY chain store were offered only vegan sausages. The charity event, held at a Melbourne branch of the home improvement store Bunnings, was organised by a cat protection organisation last Sunday, Mother's Day in Australia. But, as the Herald Sun newspaper reported, there were "a few tantrums" as customers realised that the "snags" - slang for a barbecued sausage - were meat-free. Speaking to 3AW radio, one customer said "We were a little shocked, considering it's probably one of the most male-dominated destinations in the country. We were like ... thank you, but no thank you." But Natasha Reus of Cheltenham Cat Rescue said it wasn't the first time they'd held a vegan sizzle, and that they had sold 550 snags on the day. "Some people were a bit angry, we had the odd Oscar-winning performance but most people asked questions and many gave them a try," she told the Herald Sun. "One woman in particular was very upset and very rude. I think she complained," she continued. Bunnings agreed that times are changing, even among meat-loving Australians, with manager Tony Manzone saying "Since their inception the guidelines have been consistent. Meat sausages, onions and bread. This has not changed. "However, in recent years, and on a case-by-case basis, we also allow community groups to have a vegan fundraising sausage sizzle if that is their preference," he said, pointing out that their in-store cafes already promote meat-free options. The Australian sausage sizzle is an event where sausages are barbecued and given away or sold, often to raise funds for charity. They've become a fixture on election days, with sizzles held outside polling stations, and the #democracysausage hashtag trending on Twitter. Bunnings is known for renting space outside its stores to community groups for fundraising sizzles. Revealing that the vegan sizzle had raised $1,300 (US$962, £747) for the cat rescue charity, Ms Reus said "We explained we were an animal rescue group so couldn't sell animals to eat and so people had to think about that. At least we've got people talking about the issue."

SAUDI AUTHORITIES SAY NO ROMANCE IN THE STAFF ROOM…. A principal at a girls' school in Saudi Arabia was perplexed this week to open the door to her staff room one morning and find it covered in elaborate declarations of love. Rose petals and bank notes were strewn over the floor and furniture, large helium balloons lined one wall and on a table in the middle of the room were several cakes, the largest several-tiered and covered in white royal icing. In one corner of the room, a gold necklace was displayed in the middle of several great bunches of roses. Next to it was a note lit with flashing lights. All this turned out to be the elaborate work of the husband of one of the staff, who had apparently fought with his wife and wished to make up with her, the Gulf News website reported. A video of the gesture was posted on social media, where it has been viewed tens of thousands of times. Amid the responses to it, however, were several angry questions as to how a man had managed to get into a girls' school. "It is the height of goodness and loyalty for a man to honour his wife but not in this reckless manner. If he wanted to do this he could have done so at his or his family's home," sniffed one such response. Local education authorities investigated and found the man was a member of their own security and safety department, and had let himself into the school after it was closed. Boys and girls do not mix in schools in Saudi Arabia's conservative society, just as men and women are not expected to mingle in public spaces. The government is moving to relax some of its restrictions on women, however, in the hope of enabling more of them to work.

SYLVESTER STALLONE GIVES BOLLYWOOD RAMBO THE THUMBS-UP….  Sylvester Stallone sent a message of support to the remake's Indian director… Getting a message from Sylvester Stallone about a Bollywood Rambo remake was like "an endorsement from God", the film's director has said. Sid Anand told fans there would be none of the singing and dancing often associated with Bollywood however. "I wouldn't do that to Rambo," he told the BBC. "That's like blasphemy." The movie is being launched at the Cannes Film Festival - though filming doesn't start until later this year.On his decision to launch the project in Cannes, Anand said: "Rambo is a global icon. He resonates in every part of the world, so it's important to start our campaign at the Mecca of film-making." He said he was driven to remake the movie because of the strength of the character of the "true blue action hero with a heart", immortalised by Stallone. Anand said he had a script which will "resonate in India" - but warned: "It could be controversial like Rambo First Blood was in the 80s. "It makes you think, and is about a situation that's prevailing in India and is unique in that way."

AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS LEADERS MEET FOR HISTORIC SUMMIT…. Hundreds of indigenous leaders have gathered in central Australia for a historic summit on formally recognising the country's first inhabitants. The three-day summit at Uluru coincides with the 50th anniversary of a vote that allowed indigenous Australians to be included on a national census. Australia does not mention Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in its constitution. The summit aims to reach consensus on the best method of recognition. More than 200 delegates from indigenous groups around Australia are attending the First Nations Convention, which will form the basis of a report to be delivered to the nation's political leaders in June. The recommendations may result in a referendum to be voted on by all Australians.

SOUTH AFRICA'S WESTERN CAPE DECLARES DROUGHT DISASTER….  South Africa's Western Cape province has declared a drought disaster as it faces its worst water shortage in 113 years. Provincial leader Helen Zille said water will be harvested by drilling boreholes to serve key points like hospitals in Cape Town. The alert will last for three months but could be extended if the crisis persists, she said in a statement. Southern African nations are reeling from a two-year drought. The UN estimates that over 40 million people have been affected by the drought that was caused by the El Nino climate phenomenon. "The disaster declaration will accelerate... the province's strategy to ensure that taps do not run dry," Ms Zille said. She also announced plans to use a mobile desalination plant and tap the natural aquifer under Cape Town's Table Mountain. Residents have also been urged to use no more than 100 litres (22 gallons) of water a day. Ms Zille said the disaster declaration will mean that authorities in the province can prioritise public funds for drought relief operations. Two reservoirs in the Western Cape region are already completely dry according to official statistics. The Karoo and West Coast areas of the Western Cape previously declared drought disasters in 2016, but Monday's announcement extends the scope of those emergency measures to the entire province, the AFP news agency reports.

President Seiler‑Albring, Mr Grätz, Mr Mayor, Mr Kretschmann, Ladies and gentlemen,

The Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations is 100 years old. I am very honoured that you have invited me to attend this special event in Stuttgart. During my Christmas holidays, I wondered what this celebration might have in store for us. After all, what do you expect when you are invited to a 100th birthday party? Probably a quiet and sedate affair. If you’re lucky, there will be coffee. And perhaps a slice of Swabian apple cake? You expect the centenarian, who is likely to seem rather tired, to receive polite congratulations. And you definitely expect to see a room full of white or grey‑haired guests.

Now, when I look around the room, Winfried Kretschmann, at least the part about the white hair applies to the two of us!

However, the rest could not be further from the truth. The outstanding musicians from the Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra are not sedate, and neither is the Jisr ensemble, whom we will hear shortly.

But above all, the 100‑year‑old Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations is by no means out of touch or worn‑out. On the contrary, it is an open‑minded, lively and dynamic force in our cultural relations and education policy. Ms Seiler‑Albring, your institute fosters exchange between artists worldwide in a very innovative way. It brings people together and it opens doors to dialogue, cooperation and the very important work to further understanding and communication. Moreover it does so today, in these crisis‑ridden times!

And that is why I would like to congratulate you and your colleagues, Ms Seiler‑Albring, and to thank you for your outstanding work. But above all, I want to wish you great courage and every success for the future. That naturally goes in particular for Martin Roth, who unfortunately cannot be here today. We are pleased that he will soon take over the helm of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, and wish him all the best for his new role.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The importance of the role played by the institute in our cultural relations and education policy today becomes all the clearer when one looks back at its long, and by no means always illustrious, history.

This can be seen particularly powerfully in a special place – and you may be surprised to hear where it is! This place is in the Federal Foreign Office at Werderscher Markt in Berlin. However, it is not in the offices of the Cultural Directorate‑General or in the magnificent Weltsaal, where ministers from all over the world meet. And nor is it in my office. No, this place is in the cellar!

This is where you will find the Federal Foreign Office’s Political Archive. Underground, in what were once the vaults of the Reichsbank, where the Nazis stored their gold, you will now find true historical treasures, such as dozens of slightly yellowing letters and reports describing 10 January 1917 in Stuttgart. On that day, at 11 o’clock on the dot, King William II of Württemberg and a group of high‑ranking individuals met to found a “museum and institute for research into German culture abroad and the promotion of German interests abroad”.

And if you read the nationalist speeches given on that day – in the middle of the First World War! – you can hardly imagine that they would mark the beginning of the open‑minded and tolerant institute that we are celebrating today.

The King ended his inflammatory speech with the words: “I am proud to be German. We all are.”

The new institute was the product of an era in which nation states deliberately used culture as a tool to expand or safeguard their spheres of power.

What then followed was the darkest chapter of our German history. With the Nazi seizure of power, the institute came under Nazi control and its Jewish Secretary General, Fritz Wertheimer, was dismissed. The institute became an instrument of German racial policy. Like the history of the Federal Foreign Office, this past was only addressed properly later on.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Looking back at the early days of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, that is, looking down into the cellar of the Federal Foreign Office, does not only cast a light on our past. In my opinion, looking at the past mainly reveals the sharp contrast to the present and to what our cultural relations and education policy stands for today.

The starting point 100 years ago was how Germans looked at themselves. It was how they looked at their fellow Germans abroad and vice versa. This was a cultural echo chamber.

In place of such introspection, exchange, debate and cooperation are the aims of our cultural relations and education policy today. The echo chamber of the past has become an open, transparent space for dialogue, where differences can be turned into common ground. And it is founded on the recognition that the internal and external can no longer be separated in the 21st century.

Ursula Seiler-Albring, “Cultures of We”, the motto of the anniversary year, underlines precisely these ideas. The institute shows what this means in countless outstanding projects, for example, when it exhibits contemporary German art abroad, with a focus on meetings between artists, curators and the public. Productive networks develop as a result.

At the same time, the institute invites artists from all over the world to Germany, thus showing us how others see the world, including us Germans. Instead of listening to ourselves in the echo chamber, we see a reflection of cultural experience. We see how the world sees us.

I, too, am amazed at just how much this can differ from our own expectations. I experience this when I travel, but also in meetings with artists from abroad here in Germany, be it in Berlin, Stuttgart or Leipzig.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I firmly believe that these open spaces for exchange, dialogue and debate are what we need now in particular, in a world where crises and conflicts are assailing us at an unnerving rate and force.

It is true that culture and education do not automatically lead to greater peace and security. People who believe that are mistaken!

But what I do firmly believe is that if we want to have opportunities for understanding in all of these conflicts in the first place, cultural and educational work plays a crucial role, as it is only through debate that understanding and genuine communication can ultimately develop.

In my view, this results in two things. Firstly, we need to create and preserve spaces for civil society and cultural exchange – particularly where this is difficult. We work hard to achieve this all over the world so that a lack of understanding does not lead to mistaken ideas and so that ideologies do not undermine understanding. I am grateful to the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations and all our other cultural organisations which create these important forums for understanding, be this through youth exchange programmes in Russia, the literature festival in Odessa or language projects in Saudi Arabia.

Secondly, ladies and gentlemen, we need to ensure that people in crisis-hit regions in particular have access to education and culture so that they have a chance of a safe and better future. This is the aim of the institute’s zivik projects and CrossCulture programme, in which young people improve both their professional knowledge and communication skills through work placements.

Ladies and gentlemen, creating better access to culture and education is also the aim when German foundations endeavour to set up a university of applied sciences in East Africa in order to fill the gap between school and academic education or when we give young Syrians the opportunity to continue their academic career here in Germany so that they can rebuild their country one day.

And that is why cultural work is not a “nice to have”, but rather an essential component of foreign policy, especially when times are hard and our partners are even more difficult.

Cultural work is not a “nice to have” and it is certainly not always simply nice.

Art is also stimulating and provocative. It demands debate. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason why I want to conclude my speech by looking ahead to the 2017 Venice Biennale. For over 40 years, the Federal Foreign Office has commissioned the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations to coordinate the German pavilion. This year, the curator Susanne Pfeffer has chosen the artist Anne Imhof to design it. I don’t want to give away too much here, but I think the Biennale is every bit as unlikely to be a sedate affair as the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations is out of date!

And that is the way it should be, as the same goes both in culture and politics.

We need the courage to break new ground rather than holding back in fear.

We need openness to other people’s views rather than introspection. We need debate rather than isolation.

And that is why I would like to thank and congratulate the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations.
