Anne is a fun women in STEM who plays well with the Doctor. Truly a disappointment we don't see her in another serial, but I AM glad shegets heavily featured in the Lethbridge-Stewart book series that exists.

Dr Who: The Web of Fear

I watched the blu-ray version with the reconstructed episode 3 on 13 January 2023. I had watched the surviving material previously as research for my first novel, Lethbridge-Stewart: The Daughters of Earth (Candy Jar Books, 2017). I read the novelisation of the Web of Fear when I was a kid. 

This serial begins directly after the previous ended, with our heroes desperately trying to close the TARDIS doors while they are in flight (for want of a better term). Once that’s sorted, the Doctor is keen for more adventure. Jamie and Victoria do go on about the TARDIS being uncontrollable.

We are back in London, in what looks to be a time roughly contemporary to the audience. How thrilling it must have been back in 1968 watching those references to events watched a few months earlier in the Abominable Snowmen, the serial set in Tibet, 1935 with Professor Travers as a young explorer and anthropologist. Only Professor Travers is an old man now, and his daughter, Anne, is working with the British Army to deal with the Yeti robots and a fungus in the tunnels below London… There is a distinct Quatermass vibe to the Travers x 2 and soldiers in the underground scenes. 

Also to emerge from the underground is Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart of the Scots Guard. He immediately warms to the Doctor and believes him about the TARDIS, deals with the incidents in a straightforward manner, even if he’s not wholly successful. It’s not really surprising that we’ll get to see more of him shortly…

Writers Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln evidently didn’t like the news media much. Edward Travers spits about them in Tibet when he mistakes our heroes for trying to scoop his discoveries, and Chorley in the Web of Fear is a truly vile character.

All up, it’s a great tale that sustains interest over six episodes. I like how it continues what we saw three serials earlier, without repeating much, and yet also didn’t reinvent the adversary beyond recognition.

(I haven’t wanted to discuss the animated reconstructions too much because animations aren’t really my thing. I am immensely grateful for the teams to have spent the effort to make them because I find them easier to watch than the telesnap reconstructions — they, too, are fantastic to have, and I admire the work put into creating them — but episode 3 of this serial didn’t really work for me. The people weaving about like drunk Sims disconcerted my autistic brain, and the Doctor was more Matt Smith than Patrick Troughton in facial expression and body language.)

It's the giggling of ladies maids that filled the chambers of the Crown Princess. A smile worthy of competing with the shine of the sun, reflected back in the mirror at her, which a bustling of maids tending to Ann's needs & attire more closely then ever today. The birthday of Camellia's heiress was no small matter, a day everyone looked forward to celebrating, & Ann herself was little different. A day, just for herself, it was what she needed when she gives every other day of her life to the wellbeing of her beloved kingdom.

Her light mint dress had been cleaned the day before, as too was her nails painted on the day prior. Her hair had the last of her curls being pressed, while pink flower clips were carefully places on either side of her head along her braids & a small rose gold & diamond tiara was upon the front of it. Floral earrings dangled low & a rose gold floral necklace rested already on her person, with a single mint diamond ring on her left fore finger & mint diamond bracelet on her right wrist. Makeup for her eyes & lips on her dresser sat on standby, while her shoes too sat on the floor near by for when her look was complete. She looked already so much as her people liked to call her, their beautiful flower princess.

"This isn't... too much, right?"

"Of course not, your royal highness! You look beautiful!" Wendy, of course, was only there to encourage. Very easily transfixed by the beauty of the Crown Princess. "Goddesses of Beauty themselves would be envious!" Aside from that it was Ann's birthday, she was allowed to be as flashy as she wishes.

"Come, we are almost done! And we can not have the birthday princess late for her own ball!"

Hey!

I thought maybe you could help me in my quest. I've made two bookmarks for a friend with watercolors. One of them is a small fox looking at fallen leaves flying above his head, as if he were mesmerized by them. And I've been trying to find a good quote to accompany it on the back of the bookmark, but I haven't been successful so far.

I'm looking either for a poetry excerpt (my bookmark is 1/8 of an A4 sheet of paper, so nothing that would be very long [like a full sonnet haha] but I still have some space) or a quote of any kind, in French or in English, both are fine.

Would you have any that would make a good fit? Maybe an autumn-y one?

[I don't want to influence you, but for example, for the second one which is a sky at almost-dusk-time with a washed-out blue sky and soft pink clouds, I have a quote from one of the Anne of Green Gables books by Lucy Maud Montgomery:

"In daylight I belong to the world, in the night to sleep and eternity. But in the dusk I'm free from both and belong only to myself."]

Handmade watercolour bookmarks are such a nice idea for a gift, I love it <3

I vexed myself thinking about your request because I learn poetry by heart so often, or small book excerpts, but when someone asks me to dig up a topical quote my mental library is suddenly empty. I wish I had a tag system for my brain.

I vaguely remember an Alfred Desrochers poem the first stanza of which was "Le vent est froid, le ciel est gris, la terre est rousse / L'automne est revenu par septembre apporté / Et les arbres, devant la mort du bel été / Pleurent des larmes d'or [?quelque chose?] sur la mousse." And something by Francis Jammes about "ces jours qu'empourpraient les agonies solaires de l'automne" but no recollection beyond that...

I also remember some meager excerpts from "Matin d'octobre" by François Coppée, "A travers la brume automnale / Tombent les feuilles du jardin / [???] / Une blonde lumière arrose / La nature, et dans l'air tout rose / On croirait qu'il neige de l'or."

And one of my favourite poems by Marie-Claire Bancquart, "Je marche dans la solitude des livres", "Beyond the garden, beyond the moment at hand, are the fallen shells of chestnuts, the fire of leaves in the mist..."

And a verse by Ernest Dowson that went "And are we not better and at home / in dreamful autumn...? "

Maybe a couple of lines from this e.e. cummings poem? What my brain retained of it was "the glory is fallen out of the sky, this is the passing of all shining things"...

(if a fox could write autumn poetry I think it would sound like this poem. "no lingering no backward-wondering straight glad feet fear ruining lead us into the serious darkness...")

I also like this sentence by Elizabeth Coatsworth, from her book Personal Geography: "The magic of autumn has seized the countryside; now that the sun isn’t ripening anything it shines for the sake of the golden age; for the sake of Eden; to please the moon for all I know."

Anyway, love the idea of handmade illustrated bookmarks :) It reminds me of a calendar I made for a friend years ago, I wrote a little poem for each month and illustrated it. One of the poems was about having a snail friend:

Time Ram: Dude, Where's My Yeti?

Russell T. Davies brings back another classic monster in this sequel to the beloved Peter Davison serial "The Abominable Snowmen," which sees David Tennant's Doctor reunite not only with Martha Jones, but also Michael Palin as Professor Travers! No old age makeup required, thirty years have actually passed for him.

But that's not all that the Doctor and Donna have to contend with; the creeping fungus has everyone trapped underground, and there's a traitor in their midst. Could it be the cool and collected Col. Magambo? The beautiful and brilliant Ann Travers? The cowardly and not Welsh Private Evans? The unassuming Weems Weeeeeeems? Probably not Weeeeeeeeeeeeeems, he died halfway through episode one. Alas, poor Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeems.

And on top of all that, they're stuck on the Underground with Piers Morgan. It's nearly as tough a situation as picking a fight with Douglas Camfield and his yeti-sized titanium balls! Mind the gap!
