Mushrooms - The Art, Design and Future of Fungi

Since my last post, I have gone mushrooms crazy. For my birthday I was bought the Mushroom at the End of the World book by Anna Tsing, an old observer guide to mushrooms and a little bloomsbury guide. I’ve been researching a trip to go foraging in Northern Italy in the Piedmont region and joined several mushroom forums to learn everything I can about growing. Quite fortuitously this exhibition at Somerset House started in Feb too Mushrooms: The Art, Design and Future of Fungi. Curated by Francesca Gavin the exhibition features a 130-year artists and designers including Cy Twombly, Carsten Höller, Beatrix Potter, Tom Dixon and Takashi Murakami. The exhibition celebrates the remarkable mushroom, and all the progressive, poetic and psychedelic wonder it evokes. I was really pleased to see Jae Lee Rhim’s Burial Suit in the flesh after seeing her powerful Ted Talk.

Il Conservatorio San Niccolò, da lunedì 16 Settembre 2019 alle 18 al 30 Giugno 2020, ospiterà Nel segno di Leonardo, opere dalla Collezione Carlo Palli, a cura di Laura Monaldi e con il patrocinio del Comune di Prato.

I corridoi delle scuole medie e del liceo del Conservatorio San Niccolò ospiteranno Nel segno di Leonardo, opere italiane e internazionali provenienti dalla Collezione Carlo Palli che omaggiano Leonardo Da Vinci a 500 anni dalla sua morte. La mostra raccoglie ed evidenzia non solo il mito di Da Vinci, ma l’eredità culturale a cui continuiamo a guardare: le opere sono di Pistoletto, Yoko Ono, Cy Twombly, Elisa Zadi, Emilio Isgrò e moltissimi altri in un collegamento fra arte contemporanea e rinascimentale per avvicinare i giovani all’arte, partendo proprio dalle mura di una scuola.

And also, smth to clarify:

-In this story, Roger was actually Roger Smith before he married Betty and became a Baxter. And it was Betty's Dad who brought the Baxter into the family.

Groomed from a young age to be an artist, Paul Saville, encouragement, relation and practice, she then encouraged her children

Francis Bacon, her influence and friend, also my personal influences favourite painter (Peter Howson). De Kooning, Picasso, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Degas, Monet, Matisse, Twombly, Richter, Cecily Brown, She has a back and forth with these artists. Has a relationship with the paintings and artists themselves . All very serious, important and impactful artists.

Feminish combined with old master techniques. One of the very first feminist painters.Likes a juxtaposition, harsh and soft, straight and rugged, men holding babies? Loves sculpture, picasso, ancient sculpture, film is very influential for her, documentaries (Orson Welles, Matisse)

Photographing graffiti, stopping and seeing her world

Art rituals- layering electric blues, greens and yellows to give specific things a boost. A collection of favourite true colours. Mixed colours in pots and not on palettes. Using photoshop to create the perfect colour to mimick. Mixing pastels as if they were paint.

Daily rituals- large paintings on saturday. Scoring her day. Likes a clean palette. A coffee every day. A clipboard for each painting to remind herself of the painting and what she was doing. Reports on the painting and how she made the work for improvement. A very spiritual thing painting, in touch with yourself, very magical and unique every mark that you make.

My rituals- tend to use acrylic paint as if it were watercolour. Use hundreds of different palettes so I don't 'loose' specific colours. Never use small brushes and always make do with impractical big ones. Always need to have background noise when painting if it isnt music then a comedy podcast.

I like to step back and unfocus my eyes when I look at the painting, sometimes it let's me see the shapes and colours differently. Every Thursday I do yoga, it really helps me centre and calm myself. It also immediately makes me feel refreshed and healthier
