A (comparatively) Brief Thought about Steve Harrington's Names

Lucky Stevie has full names in three different languages and they're all equally incriminating in different ways!

For context: Steve's parents meet just as the summer of '66 is ending, in a perfectly legitimate bar with absolutely no connection to organised crime in Chicago. They introduce themselves as Christopher (call me Chris, Christopher is shite) Harrington and Anita (but you, bello, can call me Tina) Martino. They are both lying.

See, America is it's own little world. Founded by desperate refugees and religious extremists, the USA is the New York of the western world - the perfect place to disappear, because no matter your sins, there's always someone weirder. And in this totally not shady bar in Chicago, these two strangers have a lot of sins.

Mr. Ciarán Ótis Marcin Ó'hArrachtáin is what some might call a terrorist. Those 'some' are, of course, all eejits who seem to be fecking delirah with the Brits treating the Irish Free State as a colony. But Ótis and Martyna didn't raise a spineless dosser, not on tales of the shite they saw in Nazi Poland. Ciarán wants to be just like his mama, so does the only thing he can at sweet sixteen and joins the IRA. It was a grand old time - until some spanner decided to start the boarder campaign, make some things go boom, then it all goes arseways and suddenly he's a wanted man. Now he's legged it all the way out to this bar in Chicago where he can find some mostly-legal work, set himself up as someone who doesn't need to check over his shoulder every five seconds - and maybe he can take a chance on this absolute ride of an Italian who's just walked in, Jaysus -

Sig.na Alessia Stefania "Pieterina" Serafini has made a name for herself as a mafiosa. Beloved, wild, ruthless granddaughter of Don Alessio - caporegime since nineteen and well on her way to consigliere - and, right now, in molti problemi with la Cosa Nostra. So much problemi that she's been effectively smuggled into the US, like that goddamn heroin shipment that started all these problemi... ah well. She just needs to lie low for a bit (a decade) with her American cousins on the less than legal side of Chicago before she can return to her cosca and the people she actually trusts not to stab her the moment she turns her back - and maybe she can have some fun with this bello, bello Irishman who's looking her way, dannazione -

So. Discussing the evolution Mr and Mrs Harrington's relationship is gonna have to wait (though I'd love to hear from you guys) - the important thing here is the family history.

Tina's side: Alessia Stefania "Pietrina" Serafini.

Tina's father is Vincenzo Serafini and her grandfather is Alessio Serafini. Her first name is the feminine of her paternal grandfather's name. Steve's middle names are also from them.

(In case it wasn't obvious, the Serafini family are heavily involved in the Italian mafia - potentially involved in the Ciaculli massacre in '63 - and also have ties to the American mafia.)

Tina's mother is Pietra Tedesco and her grandmother is Stefania Tedesco. Her middle name - Stefania - and her son's first name - Stefano - are from her maternal grandmother. "Pietrina" is a diminutive nickname for Pietra - they're saying she's just like her mother, and since they figured this would be easy and natural enough for Steve to remember, his agreed Italian 'cover' surname is Di Pietro.

(Pietra is the feminine of her father's Petri Tedesco - which is itself the new name chosen by the German runaway Peter Thälmann. No relation to German Communist Party Leader Ernst Thälman, no sir, nothing to see here.)

So: Stefano Alessio Vincenzo Serafini - or, when he doesn't want to advertise the mafia part - Stefano Di Pietro.

Chris' side: Ciarán Ótis Marcin Ó'hArrachtáin.

Chris' father is Ótis Ó'hArrachtáin, and his paternal grandparents Steafán and Keira Ó'hArrachtáin. He gets his first name from the masculine of his grandmother's name, his middle name from his father, and gave Steve his grandfather's name.

(Steafán and Keira worked their asses off their whole life to put their kids through school, ennabling Ótis to work at the Irish embassy in Poland, where he managed to smuggle a handful of refugees past the Nazis to Britain, of which his future wife, Hannia Marcinkiewicz, was one.)

Chris' mother is Anita Marcinkiewicz. He gets his middle name from her surname. Steve gets his Irish 'cover' surname from that.

(Anita and her son are very similar as teenagers and young adults - the same heady cocktail of jaded rage and a naïve sense of justice, motivating spiky teens in parallel shitty situations to commit near-suicidal acts of heroism, with similar results. Just what did Anita do? Nothing you can prove, of course...)

(Yes, Anita Marcinkiewicz and Anita Martino - a wild coincidence that kicks of conversation for our young lovers in Chicago. Not in any way manipulated by an omnipotent fangirl who wants her OCs to have something neat to make slightly awkward but unexpectedly wholesome small talk about over a Guinness and a Negroni in a bar in Chicago). (This is why Chris calls his wife Tina all the time when anyone else would get shot if she's feeling anything less than saccharine.)

So: Steofán Ciarán Ótis Ó'hArrachtáin - or, when he'd rather avoid any connection to the wanted terrorist - Steofán Ó Máirtín.

Of course, as half Irish and half Italian - or, well, 1/8 German, 2/8 Polish, 2/8 Irish and 3/8 Italian but who's counting. Aside from me -

The point is, he's Catholic as fuck. He can be non-practicing and still Catholic (bc fuckboi), he can lose his faith and still be Catholic (bc interdimensional hell monsters), he can be an atheist (bc Irish) and still be Catholic, ok - he is Italian and Irish, there's no cure.

So, yeah, he's definitely been christened. And sure, you can old give any old name to the government (fuck them anyways) as long as it suits your purposes. But your christening name is the one that God knows you by, okay, you don't want to lie to the priest and end up with the wrong name tag when you get to heaven (or if, I guess).

What I'm saying is the paperwork says Steven Otis Harrington, but some poor Father/Reverendo gets hit with Stefano Stiofán Alessio Ciarán Vincenzo Ótis Serafini Ó'hArrachtáin. Good fucking luck!

Richard and Lawrence are Terry's accountant and solicitor. Terry's been jailed for life for murder. His wife Samantha, who stood by his alibi and everybody believes lied for him, is faced with the fact he's currently too broke to appeal.

She and Terry split up 18 months ago (per Richard). 15 months ago (per Samantha). Richard is indifferent to such details.

Samantha: "So what you're trying to tell me is if Terry drops his balls I'm out on the street."

It's ok! Terry's arranged for a consignment of cannabis resin to be brought into the country :)

Also in a 'currency deal' in Spain :))

He's signed all his business deals legitimate and....otherwise .. over to Samantha :)))

A man who is not taking the piss and would just like the hysterical lady to sign some forms pls.

Sam gives in and goes back to the lads Richard and Lawrence when her mother-in-law's on the verge of being kicked out of the private care home she's in.

Richard says nothing but we keep seeing his hand fiddling round his face. Coke fiend? Or oral fixation?

Much drama in the meantime, but I clowned myself saying 'I'll go back to work when we get another Richard scene'. Nearly an hour on and we're still waiting...

Here we go! End of the first half. Of course loyal associates are invited to Terry's getting-out-of-jail-because-someone-else-admitted-to-the-crime party!

He's taller than everyone else at the party by a mile :')

Episode 2...

Joplin's voice is in the 'previously on' but I'm holding out for another scene or two :')

Besides, this is genuinely pretty good. Slower and more thoughtfully written than TV tends to be allowed to be these days.

Aaaaand it all comes out. Sam learns about Terry getting with widow of the dead man pregnant. She learns about all the people who've been paid off, and that Richard Asher, like everyone else, knows everything, and he's the one who's been paying people off for Terry.

Sorry the image quality is abysmal :')

Things keep going tits up, but Terry's convinced he can get them out of their financial problems with One Last Deal. He just needs some money to buy the heroin first.

Oh dear me no, solicitors and chartered accountants draw the line at heroin deals!

Terry rightly notes that the rest of the money they've handled for him hasn't exactly been squeaky clean.

We are not thrilled at having this pointed out.

Terry: "The chance for one last...HOO-RAH."

And in the end they probably just end up somewhat out of pocket, but this is the last we see of them.

Dead? Nope!

Evil? Go to jail for your crimes against the tax man you horrible little inside trader :3

Affects the plot? Technically, yes, but not in a way with any actual agency/character acting with their own motivations

So this is a genuinely fun thriller! The lead actors are Leslie Grantham aka Dirty Den from EastEnders (that's a wild Wikipedia page, let me tell you. Life sentence for murder. Inspired into acting by T. Dan Smith while they were in prison together. EastEnders. Attempted suicide three times after a sex scandal) and his on-screen wife from EastEnders, Anita Dobson. Who is actually married to Brian May. Yeah, that Brian May, who does the soundtrack to this film. Which is, for the most part, pretty cool - though now and again I had a Pavlovian response to the screaming guitars and started looking for Clancy Brown in leathers or a pouting Christopher Lambert. I will say though the eagle screech that happens when the camera focuses on Terry remains unjustifiable, Brian May or not.

Oh yeah, rating. Idk, like...2/5? Joplin's not in it much, but he's very cute when he is there. And I genuinely enjoyed watching the rest of the show. The ending is so nearly perfect (I think the final shot through a scope was unnecessary).

Grande Fratello, Anita torna sui social e fa una rivelazione spiazzante Ormai manca solo un giorno al gran finale e finalmente domani sera scopriremo chi si aggiudicherà la vittoria di questa edizione del Grande Fratello. Al momento i finalisti sono cinque e sono: Beatrice Luzzi, Rosy Chin, Massimiliano Varrese, Simona Tagli e Perla Vatiero. Al televoto per decretare il sesto finalista ci sono Letizia Petris, Greta Rossetti e Sergio D’Ottavi. Anita Olivieri ha dovuto abbandonare la Casa più spiata d’Italia nel corso della puntata di lunedì sera. Nelle ultime ore, l’ex inquilina è tornata sui social e in un lungo post, ci ha tenuto a condividere con i fan le prime impressioni e le prime sensazioni post addio al reality di Canale Cinque. Solenidade foi realizada no Plenário da Assembleia Legislativa.FOTO: Vicente Schmitt/Agência AL Em comemoração aos 200 anos da imigração alemã para o Brasil e 195 anos em Santa Catarina, a Assembleia Legislativa promoveu uma sessão especial na noite desta segunda-feira (16). Na ocasião, foram homenageados municípios, instituições e personalidades que contribuíram na construção e preservação da cultura germânica no estado. A solenidade foi proposta pelo deputado Ivan Naatz (PL). “A presença germânica, com seu conhecimento, força de trabalho e tradições auxiliou na formação da identidade do estado e é marcante na cultura e economia, incluindo nosso potencial turístico”, destaca o parlamentar. Além de entidades representativas e prefeituras, as homenagens incluíram também personalidades atuais e in memoriam, que se destacaram no cenário estadual, nacional e internacional em áreas como artes, ciências, política, esportes, economia e negócios. A sessão especial contou com a parceria e o apoio da Fundação Catarinense de Cultura (FCC), que desde o início deste ano criou a Comissão do Bicentenário da Imigração Alemã para realização de diversos eventos comemorativos sobre o tema. Em nome dos homenageados, discursou Suely Petry, diretora de patrimônio histórico museológico da Secretaria de Cultura e Relações Institucionais de Blumenau. Suely falou sobre a importância da imigração alemã para o desenvolvimento do estado de Santa Catarina. “A participação alemã no nosso estado está refletida na indústria, no comércio, na miscigenação desse povo que se integra aos brasileiros. Santa Catarina é um dos estados mais desenvolvidos. Temos uma população muito centrada no trabalho, que se destaca pelo progresso, pela geração de emprego e pelo desenvolvimento”, destacou. O secretário executivo de Articulação Internacional e Projetos Estratégicos de Santa Catarina, Paulo Bornhausen, falou em nome do governo do Estado. “Há quase 200 anos, as primeiras famílias de alemães chegaram aqui para ajudar a construir o melhor estado do Brasil. Eles tiveram e têm importância até hoje na vida privada e na vida pública. Começaram a partir da cidade de São Pedro de Alcântara e foram se espalhando pelo estado e depois com novas levas de imigração outros vieram”, ressaltou Bornhausen. História No dia 25 de julho de 1824, um grupo de 39 imigrantes de língua alemã chegaram ao atual município de São Leopoldo, no Rio Grande do Sul. A data é considerada o marco zero da imigração alemã no Brasil. Em Santa Catarina, a presença dos alemães é registrada a partir de 1829, com a criação da colônia de São Pedro de Alcântara. Aproximadamente 300 mil alemães imigraram para o Brasil entre os séculos XIX e XX. O pico ocorreu entre os anos de 1920 e 1929, com a chegada de mais de 75 mil alemães, segundo informações do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE).
