Grad School Week 4

Previously I spoke about Yves Klein, a problematic artist of note who was mentioned in my Contemporary Art History class for his objectification (literal) of women and also loving of the void.

For this class I have to write a paper that takes about three contemporary works that connects back to one of the themes of class. It can be anything you're interested in, and I am particularly interested in existentialism and conceptual art so I tried to find something related to that, although neither are a theme of class and would probably be too general anyways. So, I've been researching the use of mechanisms to represent the human body and only looking at abstract conceptual works to do so, which tends to lean into very existential ideas.

I ran into another void related work that I immediately was like, "Oh, cool!" Only to discover it was by the infamously annoying Anish Kapoor. Here it is:

You may know Kapoor for his notorious use of vantablack the blackest black paint (at the time) that he had the sole copyright to use. Kapoor, like Klein, was a VOID LOVER! He wanted to use this paint for making VOIDS! Then Stuart Semple reacted by making several colors that everyone BUT Kapoor could use. It was an internet meme. You remember.

But the similarities between Klein and Kapoor don't end with both being infuriating and loving voids because, of course, the other big thing Klein was famous for was his PATENT of International Klein Blue! Men of art history really do be thinking they own colors!

Anyways, I think maybe having an obsession with the void may be a red flag. So, count that against me from here on out. It's not my fault the absence of something feeling like a presence is such a fascinating concept!

I only learned I was so existential this year when my oldest sister read my TV pilot and commented, "It's so.... existential..." and I was like, oh my god, that's the running theme through everything I've ever made, isn't it? I'm existential as hell.

Anyways, I've yet to talk about anything that ACTUALLY happened in classes this week. It was pretty normal. I went to an artist talk with Anthony "Mojo" Reed which was super interesting because he's so charismatic and optimistic and just generally wanted all of us to find success. He's really inspiring.

I got my first grade back on that gun project I showed you last week and I got a "B" on it, which has me wondering how one gets an "A" since I met all the requirements. Now it has me worried you have to exceed expectations to get an A. Ugh.

Here's some random building studies I did for class. I will learn how to draw backgrounds, even if I'm screaming and crying the whole time I'm doing it.

I was looking back on some of the work I did for my portfolio earlier in the year and I already see a lot of improvement. That makes me happy!
