Hrithik Roshan’s latest release Fighter is making great records on the box office. The film is directed by Siddharth Anand in which Hrithik plays the role of Squadron Leader Shamsher Pathania lovingly called Patty. Hrithik is very happy to see his film garner such great response and in a recent interview, talked about the mixed reviews that the film is getting. He also said that he does not mind the criticism as it is his director Siddharth Anand’s “conviction”.

Quoting that as an actor he does not cross lines, Hrithik said, “I would like to believe that my fans and my audience who come to watch my films are a bit more evolved and they would not need lines like these. That is a weight that I bear. As an actor, I do not cross any lines. At the same time, I admire that Sid (Siddharth Anand) is a very, very headstrong filmmaker. It is his conviction. Sometimes you see somebody that convinced and it kind of breaks your heart to power down and say no. I also bear the weight of that because finally, it is my face. But I am very, very happy that it has landed as entertainment and nothing more than that. I am really relieved about that. Having said that, I still bear the weight."

He also opened up about his practice of choosing roles and said, "If your mission is stardom, and your mission is running that business, and you have that shop that people are liking and you keep selling what they like... That's also okay. I don't enjoy that, I feel suffocated. I think it comes down to why you are doing what you are doing. Why are you doing movies? What are you getting out of it? Is it for money? Then, go ahead man. There are no rules. You are earning the bread for yourself and your family. You go out and you sell yourself and do what it takes. I respect that. But once that need is satisfied... did you still want more? It has got to stop. You have to know what kind of life do you want to live and what is the cost of living that life. I always had that desire in me to find depth, because if you are not finding that what are you doing?"

21 years of k3g; an evolution in style, music and drama

yesterday marked the day when 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' hit the theatres in 2001, setting off a an unprecedented domino effect that would be felt even 21 years later. Set on the most melodramatic premise known to man, where a son gets disowned for marrying below his social status, his brother goes from a chubby kid to having an eight pack and a sixth thumb; where the second lead drives to school in a lambo, it has got it all. The melodrama of it all is not why it lives in my head rent free, it was the colours, mood and the ambiance that K3G introduced me to.

This movie was my first introduction to a pastel based wardrobe, everything that 'Poo' wears in this movie can only be categorised as Y2K classics. Starting from the pink jacket and choker ensemble in 'Dewaana hain dekho' to the cream colored beaded 'Sharara' in 'bole Chudiyan', Manish Malhotra and Kareena Kapoor set the bar high for the metric of serving looks. Kapoor's backless spandex-leather outfit in 'you are my soniya' absolutely mesmerised millions of girls like me and definitely did set a template in mind for club aesthetics- sleek, sparkly with just the right amount of skin. I think it's worth mentioning that Kareena's outfit in 'Bole Chudiya' did kickstart the trend of bell bottomed salwar suits, and started my love for rhinestones. One could say, 'Poo' was the purveyor of the desi coquette aesthetics, for her use of pastels, brands and obviously, her brother-in-law's money.

One cannot just speak of the characters and not be reminded of the flowing and the beautifully fusioned music of the soundtrack. Jatin-Lalit, Sandesh Shandilya, Aadesh Shrivastava did a wonderful job of blending the 2000s bollywood with a sensual R&B of the western end. In my opinion, Anil Pandey absolutely outdid himself with the sensual lyrics of 'Sooraj Hua Maddham', with the Egyptian background and Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik's voice, it was heard to cut through the palpable romanticisim of the song. Additionally, being the revolutionary that KJo is, he introduced us to one of the best wedding songs of all time; the fact that you'll have to think a bit to pick your choice says enough.

Yesterday marked not only the 21st years of the release of a era-setting film but also the capstone of core memories for desi millennials all over the world. With its memeable dialogue, wonderful visuals and playback button hitting songs, K3G will forever live on in our heads.

My top ten Hindi films on Netflix

If you’ve never seen a Hindi film, you’re missing out. Action, romance, comedy, and drama: you can often find them ALL in one of these three-hour films. (OK, not all Hindi films are three hours, but they tend to skew longer than American films, especially the older ones.) If the constant genre-changing doesn’t hold your attention, maybe the singing, dancing, bright costumes and incredible cinematography will. If you’re not sure where to start, check out my recommendations below. Most of these feature strong female characters or have a feminist bent. Here are a few Hindi words to listen for while you’ve got the subtitles on.

pyaar – love, dost – friend, dushman – enemy, zindagi – life

1.) Dangal (2016) – Feminist sports movie, based on a true story. Lead actor and producer Aamir Khan plays Mahavir Phogat, the father of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, two girls from a small town in Haryana who aspire to become professional wrestlers, though the state lacks both structural and social support for female athletes. Their father was a professional wrestler who dreamed of winning Olympic gold for India, and failing that, aspired to have a son that could fulfill his ambitions. But he didn’t have a son. He had one daughter, and then another, and then another, and then another. One day, after the girls get in trouble for beating up some boys in the neighborhood that were bullying them, Dad realizes he may not need a son to have Olympic gold winners in the family. Aamir got most of the praise when this film came out, but all the actresses who played his daughters (Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, and Suhani Bhatnagar) trained super hard for this film, and it shows 100% on screen. Best song: Dangal.

2.) Queen (2014) – Feminist coming-of-age travel film. This film is about a small-town girl that gets dumped on the eve of her wedding and decides to take her honeymoon to Europe alone, even though she’s never been out of India. Along the way, she makes friends with a diverse group of other travelers, sheds some of her more conservative views, and learns to embrace life fearlessly. Best song: Hungama. Second best song: London Thumakda.

3.) PK (2014) – This film was controversial when it came out because it pokes fun at religion, but it’s ultimately about we shouldn’t allow religious differences to divide us. Aamir Khan plays an alien that pays Earth a visit to try and understand human society. Unfortunately for him, there are a lot of rules he has to learn to pass as one of us (even though he looks human). Fortunately for us, that learning process includes a number of hilarious mishaps. Best song: Tharki Chokro.

4.) Dil Dhadkne Do (2015) – Family drama (but not without comedy, action, and romance) starring Priyanka Chopra (who you may recognize from Quantico or Baywatch). The parents in a family of business moguls decide to celebrate their anniversary by taking a ten-day cruise with some of their best frenemies. What could possibly go wrong? Best song: Girls Like to Swing. Second best song: Gallan Goodiyaan.

5.) 2 States (2014) – One of my favorite romantic Hindi films, this rom-com becomes a family drama when college sweethearts Krish and Ananya have to convince their parents to accept their partners. Krish is Punjabi (North Indian) and Ananya is Tamil (South Indian) and their cultures are very different. Will the parents be able to overcome their prejudices around class, color, and culture to accept their children’s partners? Best song: Iski Uski. Second best song: Locha E Ulfat.

6.) Little Things (2016) – This is a series, not a TV show, but I wanted to include it because I love it so much. It’s a super cute portrayal of a relationship between affluent twenty-somethings living in Mumbai. She’s very career-driven and he’s a little less clear on what his goals are, which contributes to some of the relationship conflicts in season one.

7.) Raees – This is a pretty straightforward gangster movie. A boy with strong values but few career options starts making money the best way he knows how: bootlegging liquor in a dry state. He eventually gets rich and powerful enough to scare even cops and politicians, but ultimately gets in over his head. Raju Ban Gaya podcast described this as a rip-off of Narcos, but I feel that’s a little unfair. They also praised the film’s portrayal of a Muslim protagonist. This movie features a fight scene in a butcher’s market, which, if you’re vegetarian like me, you may find a little hard to stomach. Also, some people get murdered. Best song: Laila Main Laila.

8.) Kahaani (2017) – The feminist thriller/murder mystery you didn’t know you needed. Vidya is living in London and very pregnant when her husband, who has traveled to Kolkata for work, goes missing. She travels to India to find him, but the local authorities, who assume he bounced because he couldn’t handle the prospect of fatherhood, are no help. Anyone that tries to help her mysteriously turns up dead. Can she find the killer before he finds her?

9.) Om Shanti Om (2007) – I included this because it’s a classic, and it’s got a lot of the wackiness I think Americans expect from Hindi films. It’s chockfull of references to other Hindi films, so the more you’ve seen, the more you can appreciate it. However, you don’t need to be a Bollywood buff to be able to enjoy this story about reincarnation and karmic comeuppance. It’s also a good introduction to Shah Rukh Khan, one of Hindi films’ leading men, and one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Best song: Deewangi Deewangi.

10.) Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019) – This is the first mainstream Bollywood with a lesbian protagonist. (The independent Hindi film Fire portrayed a lesbian relationship in 1996 and it did not go so well.) Ek Ladki starts out as a rom-com and then becomes a family drama. The plot gets a little convoluted between the second and third act, but the chemistry between 90s heartthrobs Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla is a joy to watch. Fun fact: Anil, who plays the protagonists’ father in the film, is the father of lead actress Sonam Kapoor in real life.

These are all on Netflix right now. Not sure how many will be taken down next month.

Malang Movie Review

Two young people, Advait (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Sara (Disha Patani) bump into each other at a rave party in Goa and sparks fly. Both are unattached, don’t have any family constraints and have loads of money. Both want to live in the moment, do drugs, indulge in adventure Afdah sports and have a bit of free sex as well. As so many of their attributes match, they decide to do these things together, pushing their boundaries in the process.

When all seems to be going hunky-dory, that’s the sign when things will start to get worse. She gets pregnant and things take a downhill turn for the couple from then on. Some years later, a mysterious stranger is bumping off policemen. Maverick encounter specialist police inspector Agashe (Anil Kapoor) and a straight-laced special cell cop Michael (Kunal Khemu) try to sort things out as bodies pile up.

Director Mohit Suri has tried to keep things taut by offering us characters who aren’t all normal. Anil Kapoor is shown to be a drug-snorting, trigger-happy cop with a fetish for the old Aaj ki raat Asha Bhosle number from Anamika. Kunal Khemu is going through an unhappy marriage, Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani have secrets of their own. The film is purported to be a thriller and the portions where the police chase after the would-be killer are slickly choreographed.

The whole Goan drug vibe and the 24/7 party culture are exaggerated visions of the actual thing but set up the mood of the film. The film has a non-linear narrative and director Suri has set up the romantic interludes rather nicely, projecting an image of carefree nonchalance. The camera lingers on Aditya’s and Disha’s toned bodies as hummable songs play in the background. It when he’s setting up the mystery element that he falters. The screenplay offers you implausible situations one after another and you kind of zone out after some time. The twist ending, when it comes, therefore isn’t as impactful as it should have been.

There isn’t much scope for acting for the two leads. They make for a good looking couple alright and someone should cast them pronto in a breezy romance. Anil Kapoor once again gives his all in a role which requires him to go all out. His energy at his age is to be admired indeed. Kunal Khemu has been given a ludicrous character arc but does his utmost to rise above it.

All-in-all, Malang is a flawed but entertaining product and would be especially liked by those who are fans of slasher flicks. The whole explanation about why the antagonist is the way he is is totally shambolic. A little more care in the writing would have turned it into a better product for sure.

I was not aware of my vocals being used in Nach Punjaban song from Jug Jugg Jeeyo, claims singer Gippy Grewal

Punjabi singer and actor Gippy Grewal recently released a statement about the 'The Punjaabban Song' in Jugjugg Jeeyo starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor, and Neetu Kapoor. The song was originally sung by  Abrar Ul Haq who says that Dharma Productions did not take rights from him before the music launch. Gippy also said that the music composer Tanishk Bagchi also told him that his vocals were not used in the movie whereas later it was confirmed that the entire movie trailer was based on those vocals only.

Gippy, in an interview, said that he was approached for the track 'The Punjaabban Song'  of the movie which was used for promotions heavily and he had said that he would listen to the music and send it back. “They sent to me saying 'You sing this song!' They said, 'Sir, will you sing this song, 'Nach Punjaban'?' I said, 'I will listen to it and if my vocals fit, I will sing it!' So I heard the track, recorded it, and send it to them. Nobody called me for three months. So I assumed that nobody liked my vocals and they didn’t use them. One day I saw the poster that read that the trailer is coming out tomorrow. So I messaged their music director Tanishk Bagchi if his vocals had been used, and he said ‘No, it was Dharma’s call’. I said, 'That's fine! No problem and good luck. We will do something next time. The next day, the trailer came out and I didn’t watch it because I thought that my song hadn’t been featured in it, so I wasn’t interested. My brother called me from Australia and said, ‘You sang well, you didn’t tell me?' And I was like, 'Where did you hear my song?' He said that your vocals are in the trailer. So when I looked up the trailer, the entire trailer has been cut around my vocals.”

Gippy said that he was surprised that the composer wasn’t aware of the usage and he wasn’t informed. The singer claims that he had messages from the makers of the movie to not use his vocals as he is not interested in doing it anymore., “They had obviously used it, and they called me and tried to explain. Their entire promotion was based on the song, nobody said who sang it. I don’t know what competition they had.”

Singer Abrar Ul Haq also tweeted that Dharma Productions has not taken the rights of the music which made Gippy more uncomfortable. ”I have not sold my song “ Nach Punjaban” to any Indian movie and reserve the rights to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar should not use copy songs. This is my 6th song being copied which will not be allowed at all. @DharmaMovies @karanjohar.”

When I saw the tweet, I thought “I was stuck. I realised this is Abrar’s song, and they’ve taken his rights—and I’ve grown up listening to him, and I respect him a lot. And I had not signed any agreement, and I got a nice call from Azeemji in Dharma Productions so I signed. He told me about the cheque and I explained that it’s not about the money, and to please not do this. If I had to do it for money, I would have said it before sending my vocals. But, please don't do these things. I don’t understand these things…”

Dharmendra recalls living in a garage, working in drilling firm: ‘I would do overtime for extra money’ - bollywood

Senior Bollywood actor Dharmendra recently appeared on singing reality show Indian Idol 11 and looked back fondly at the time when he lived in a garage and worked in a drilling firm. The veteran actor became nostalgic after contestants on the show performed the song Kal Ki Haseen Mulaqat Ke Liye from the actor’s 1976 film, Charas.Sharing memories of his struggling days, Dharmendra said, “In my earlier days, I used to live in a garage because I didn’t have a proper home in Mumbai. To survive in Mumbai, I worked in a drilling firm where I was paid Rs 200, and to earn some extra money I used to do overtime.”Dharmendra had earlier turned emotional during his appearance on another reality show, Superstar Singer. A video depicting his journey was played on the show. Talking about a bridge where the actor used to go after school, an emotional Dharmendra said, “Yahi mai khwab dekhta tha yahan aane ke. Us pul pe jaata hun to us pul se kehta hu ki Dharmendra tu actor ban gaya yaar! (This is where I dreamt of coming to showbiz.
