Re-reading Jingo for the umpteenth time, I've always known the whole "second bowman" concept was a reference to the JFK assassination but I've never put two and two together on some of the other references, the two main ones being that Snowy Slopes fired from the back storage rooms of the UU library, a storage room filled with textbooks, a reference to the Texas school book depository.

And the second reference actually made me groan. Angua and Carrot meet up with a Gnoll named stoolie, a regular informant of the watch. I believe this is the first time we actually meet a gnoll in the discworld series, seems like a random inclusion in the story. Then i realised.

In the UK police informants are commonly known as a "Grass"

So stoolie... is a "Grassy Gnoll"

i will never be over Angua’s dog moments because they are so specifically DOG moments, not wolf moments. my favorite might be the part in Making Money where she was holding a squeaky dog toy and had trouble putting it down and kept squeaking it at inappropriate times. and then she walked out of the room with it.

Terry Pratchett is amazing at writing women, this isn't a new thing to say. But I was having a think about how he wrote women, and tried to think up what common thread there was between his woman characters (especially because with most authors, especially male authors, you tend to be able to tell the author's 'type' by the way they write woman love interests).

At first I couldn't think of anything, because Pterry wrote such a diverse range of personalities, ages, jobs, body types etc.

And then it hit me. The one prevailing thread in all the Pratchett books I've read so far: Pterry's woman characters are just so opinionated. And I love that.

Edit: and by Lance Corporal I of course mean Lance Constable. I was running off of very little sleep and coming back from an eight hour shift when I drew this.
