Rather odd that the Inspector stumbled upon Angieâs published account of their adventure in âThe Lions Take Beverly Hillsâ,
which alerts them to the fate that she and Aidan face at the end of the episode.

requested by: (@mraes) Heyy i hope youâre doing good! I just found ur account and lemme just sayâŚur writing is so good. My two special interests rn are actually resident evil and rdr2 lol so this is perfect :)
Iâd like to request your take on Donna with a s/o who is very sociable, gets along with everyone. Maybe they accompany Donna to a meeting for the first time and end up with a few new friends (as well as invitations to hang out) by the end?
a/n: i say this time and time again, that's a sweet thing to say thank you ejkaejklf and not a problem! apologies for the late publishing! i wasn't quite sure if you wanted a full little story or headcanons so i went with the latter. of course i'm able to do the other which way if you'd like! :)
characters; donna beneviento x reader
Meeting the Family;
Donna is a very private person. So her siblings finally piecing together that she has a lover takes awhile. An extra toothbrush? Oh, it's probably just a spare. Hm, this definitely looks like way too many dishes for a one person household. And once they do, they're just like "WHO?? WHAT THE HELL, THE DOLLMAKER PULLED BEFORE ME?" They're bombarding her with questions, some she'll quietly answer, and some that are more invasive Angie is snapping back.Â
She was a little... hesitant about bringing you to meet her adoptive family. But she relented, because sooner or later they would've probably barged into her manor to meet you themselves the moment an opportunity came up. They were curious, and it soothed her soul just a little bit.Â
"I would like to meet the person that's lucky enough to grace my little sister's eyes." "As would I!"Â
"OH BUG OFF, ONLY DONNA'S ALLOWED TO SEE THEIR FACE!" - a certain homicidal doll.Â
Very well then. So she arranged to bring you along to the next family meeting. Mother Miranda was aware, and truly she was intrigued about meeting Donna's little secret lover. Would you be quiet like the veiled lady? Or something entirely opposite?
When Donna quietly told you she'd made arrangements with her family for you to meet them, she couldn't believe how enthusiastic you were. You'd heard about them, y'know being the 4 lords and all, but it didn't terrify you. You just hoped Mother Miranda would approve of you dating one of her beloved daughters. Andddd that Lady Dimitrescu wouldn't slice you to ribbons if she found reason to disapprove of you.
Donna just squeezed your hand, sensing your slight nervousness. "... No matter what they think, I love you either way." It wasn't until you stood next to Donna, approaching the Dimitrescu Castle that you got cold feet. You were excited, but felt ready to yak. The doll noticed how you kinda faltered in your steps and tugged on your shirt sleeve.Â
"Oh c'mon, don't tell me you've got the quakes now! You were so excited when you brought back that stupid pie!" "HEY I DIDN'T WANT TO SHOW UP EMPTY HANDED?!"
Meeting the Dimitrescus;
alcina is just quietly watching from behind the curtains of one of the higher level windows if I'm being honest. she's just studying you, like a cat does to a stranger.Â
Donna again squeezes your hand, mumbling "I'd never make you do something you don't want to do. We can go back if you'd like.." but god you're determined. "No, it's alright, I'll be fine."Â
mkay then.Â
Alcina is already at the door when you're just about to use the giant knocker. Donna is definitely taken aback, because the Countess usually takes a while to open the door or one of the many maidens does it.Â
Surprisingly, you don't recoil, instead giving a very chirpy "Good afternoon Ms. Dimitrescu'' with a slight head bow. Meanwhile Donna is very much holding her breath behind you with Angie being uncharacteristically quiet.
She looks you up and down, and responds. "Good afternoon"
"Y/N L/N. I hope it's alright I'm attending with Donna today?"
"If it's alright with Mother Miranda, I suppose it is. Come in, it's starting to get cold."
Donna is proud of you oh my god. She breathes finally and picks up her companion, going before you while you enter last.Â
Ah, you're the gentleman type of person. Good.Â
"Lord Moreau and Heisenberg haven't arrived yet. Typical, they're both morons. Anywho, please make yourselves at home."
She turns to look at you, but you're busy admiring the grand decor. Like seriously everything is so tidy and perfectly placed.
"Miss Dimitrescu, did you arrange all of this?"Â
"The decor? Oh no, I designed how I wanted it to be, and had the maids arrange it."
And thus begins the rambling. You and Alcina are talking about little trinkets she has, their origins, the paintings? Donna and Angie are stunned. But she's pleased, Alci seems to enjoy your company.
Suddenly the swarm of flies appears. "MOTHER, CASSANDRA IS BEING A NUISANCE!"
"I AM NOT, I ONLY TOLD YOU- oh?"
you look at Donna, who is tilting her head. Her nieces (?), usually keep to themselves when there's a meeting. Perhaps Alcina had notified them of a newcomer.Â
You look back and see 2 young women looking at you, one with blond hair, the other with brown(black?) hair. Their faces are messy, presumably dried blood around their mouths. You can see that their noses are inhaling⌠are they smelling you?Â
"Ahem, girls, we have guests. This is Cassandra and Bela, my daughters. There's a third, Daniela, but I'm unsure of where she is."
"um⌠nice to meet you. I'm Y/n-"
"Ah, you're Donna's lover!"
"Speak up, it's not like we're gonna bite."
"..."
Angie was about to open her mouth at that remark but a nudge from Donna held her back. she wasn't ready to go back to her time out corner.Â
After a bit of awkward glancing, you took note of a book in Bella's hand, internally debating whether it would be appropriate to make conversation with one of Dimitrescus ' daughters.Â
"Do you like to read?"Â
"..."
"..."
"Oh please, she's a bookworm. Goes into the library, she never comes out. Practically lives there."
"Better than being a barbarian and running around like a ⌠what was that expression? something with a chicken with no headâŚ"
"A headless chicken?"
"Yes! It's better than being a barbarian and running around like a headless chicken with a sickle in its hand!"
"Hey now!"
"Enough! You two bicker like wild dogs. Now go find Daniela, she's been awfully quiet."
"Hmph. Yes mother."
You were quietly giggling, making note to bring by a few novels for Bela. You stood next to Donna, and slipped your hand in her's. Alcina's eyes flickered to this motion, and thus her own interrogation began.Â
"So tell me Y/N, how long have you been with my sister?"
"I presume you treat her right? If I ever get the notion that you've mistreated her we'll have a new wine on the market."
"Alcina."
"I'm just giving them a warning."
"Warning or are you jealous T-Rex?"
"Can it, firewood."
Whilst Alcina does like you, she's more so overprotective of her adoptive sister. She's got a fragile mind, and she doesn't want her to get hurt. But she's assured that you take good care of Donna, and Donna does the same.Â
suddenly all heads jerk to the doors, where a booming voice calls out. "Ladies and gentlemen! We now have Karl Heisenberg!"
Meeting Heisenberg;
When the doors blew open, he saw you holding Donna and Alcina glaring him down.
"Stupid Man-thing! If you ruined my doors I'll have your goddamn head!"
"Try it you super-sized bitch!"
You puzzledly look at Donna, and Angie pipes up rather a little too gleefully.
"OOOO this is gonna be a good one! Fight fight fight!"
"Angie."
Donna silently shakes her head and replies to your confused and concerned reaction.
"There's nothing much to worry about, this happens nearly every meeting."
You give a quiet O, and turn to look back at the two, who seem to be in a staring match of sorts. Suddenly, he presumably glances in your direction, and clears his throat.Â
"Ah! You must be the mysterious lover we've all been curious about. Tell me, what's your name?"
"Y/N."
"Y/N? Well Y/N, I'm assuming you've met the Big Woman. And I'm Karl Heisenberg."
With that, he stuck his hand out for you to shake.Â
"Egh, I wouldn't dare to shake that thing's hand, you can't be sure of where it's been."
Okay that finally set off Karl. You simply blinked and the next moment, there was metal pointing to the back at Alcina, who had unsheathed some long claws. You gawk in amazement, while Donna is simply tugging you behind her.Â
"If you two are just going to bicker, i think Y/N and I will take our leave."
The two's heads crank as they look at her, back at each other, and finally they grumble and Karl settles to give Alcina the middle finger.Â
"... So Lord Heisenberg, Lady Dimitrescu, Lady Beneviento, and isn't there one more?"
"Ah, you mean the moronic freak. Yes, Moreau. Fair bit of warning, he does have a strong stench, so don't let him hug you."
Angie presumably if she had face muscles, would've been wrinkling her nose. "And they never gave us that heads up."
"I'm pretty sure you can't smell jack shit."
"That doesn't matter!"
You were still standing behind Donna, who was seriously gripping your hand. The poor thing thought her siblings would've been more well behaved but now she's kinda antsy.
she doesn't want you getting hurt.
Karl goes quiet from his bickering with the doll for a bit and then huffs.
"I'll be on my best behavior from now till after the meeting."
"Ha, I'd like to see that."
"And you will!"
(I'm making this a two parter, hope that's alright!)

I hope you're all doing well. I want to have a heart-to-heart with you, so Iâll be upfront. This semester has been tough, and Iâve been juggling a lot between school and work. To help ease some of the financial pressure, (and mental) Iâm considering starting a tip account.

Review of The Hate U Give
Hello darlings, I know that I have you very abandoned here. An apology, but today I want to present my review of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The book was published in 2017 and had a film with the same name that was released in 2018.
But what is the book about?
The book is narrated by Starr Carter, a 16 -year -old girl who witnesses the murder of her best friend, Khalil, at the hands of the police. This being a "normalized" and even justified event in her community, because she is African-American and her neighborhood predominates African -American people. She, confused in what to do, makes an introspective trip about the racism that she lives every day, what she can do to take care of herself and her family, but also what she must do to stop this.
I am summarizing the book a lot, but it is a fairly complicated issue that touches as racism impacts all the environments of an African-American woman.
What I enjoyed from the book were the themes and the character development Starr had. I am not in her place, we live completely different experiences, but I understand that it is an experience that has to be shared. Because we must not forget that she is a 16 -year -old girl. She is barely entering a new world of maturity and how far can she help her community.
I love the diversity of lives and the empathy that had to put their difficulties without stereotyping them. I loved that Starr was always given a time to enjoy being a girl and that not all the time was tragedy after tragedy. It was a grieving process with good days and bad days.
At first, I found it difficult to read the book. Not so much because of the scenes, but because I was worried about getting attached to the characters and then something would happen to them.
The language was something strange to read, because I am not used to the dialect, however, you get used to it quickly.
I think another thing it helps is to remember that I am already an adult, reading a teenager to express herself is like an ahhh, that's why. It definitely got better until the end, it was more digestible to read and even the jokes were more fluid. This may be because it is the author's first novel, but they are aspects that are improved, because it does not take away from the contribution of the novel.
Now, another reason why it was difficult for me to read it was the conflict that is being experienced today. All of this was difficult to read because you read how the characters justify the death of their best friend, then you hear it in the news and feed, and it makes you angry. If you want to know more about the topic, I recommend looking for journalists who are reporting on the topic like Bisan or Motaz. I am going to attach some accounts that I follow on the subject on another post.
But, back to the book in terms of narrative. I would give it a 4 out of 5, because I feel like there were lines that took me out of the story. Thematically, 5 out of 5, I love the perspective it takes and the messages about: fighting for what is fair, it is a group effort to promote justice and respect, grieving processes are complicated, and let children enjoy their childhoods. It is a book that I definitely recommend and keep looking for more narratives like this in all media. Books, movies, video essays, music, documentaries, plays, series, in all formats. But the most important thing is to know how to take action.

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
Books Iâve read so far in 2023!
Friend me on Goodreads here to follow my more up to date reading journey for the year!
___
52. Nic Blake & the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy by Angie Thomas--âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
I read this book as an audiobook from the library, but I also have an ARC from the publisher (full disclosure), which didn't affect my review in any way. I didn't know what to expect when I started this new MGLit title by the incredible author that is Angie Thomas, but I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed it!! Our MC is a young black girl who finds out some hard truths about why her and her father are always moving around. What happens after is a whirlwind of adventure and great dialogue, along with a very cute demon puppy. One of the things that stood out for me is how Thomas, like always, inserted important social commentary into her story. The comparison of her magical fictional world and our very flawed non-magical world will hopefully be a great way for younger readers (and the older ones who pick this up) to truly see the disparity with which certain people in society are treated in comparison to others. If you want a fun adventure full of magic and self-discovery, but also with some important topics being touched on, then I think you might really enjoy this one. I'm excited to see where Thomas takes this story!
___
53. Meet Me Halfway by Lilian T. James--âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
Re-read April 2023: I was on a re-reading streak this month, so I picked up another title I loved like hell when I first read it. I have to say that I STILL loved this. I loved how the gruff love interest slowly grew warmer with the MC and how their relationship developed. I don't have much else to say because this is still a favourite! I love this trope so much lol.
___
54. The Score by Elle Kennedy--âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
It has been five hundred years and I have finally finished this book. Despite how long it took me to read this book, I actually really enjoyed it. I loved the sexual tension between the two characters, even when they were denying it. I won't say much about this one because it felt a bit like a fever dream (once I started reading where I had left off before, I couldn't stop), but I absolutely adored how the MMC just completely fell so hard for the FMC, especially with how he reacted when she needed him during an emotional situation. Loved that ending too, since it really sets up the next book (which is a favourite trope of mine). Also, of course, can't forget the spice and how good it was. Gotta love that, too.
___
55. Mayhem by Jamie Shaw--âď¸âď¸
Re-read April 2023: Sigh. I changed the rating for this one because while I've chuckled at my past self about being so over the top in my annoyance with some trashy books, this one was something I was really surprised to see I had loved. The story itself is fun and I can definitely see why I loved that, but holy shitballs, this was a pool of slut shaming. So. Much. Slut. Shaming. Like, I lost count of how many times this MC called another woman a whore, a slut, or a hooker simply for having the audacity of trying to get with her crush, a literal rock star. "This bar smelled like sluts" was a personal favourite. I kept finding myself saying, as I listened to the audiobook, "wow, she is so mean. Why are you calling her that?" I get being jealous but like... come on. Anyway, like I said, I enjoyed the story of her falling for the rock star and hiding her identity from him, but it's definitely not the five star read I gave it years ago.
___
56. The Foxe & the Hound by R.S. Grey--âď¸âď¸âď¸
I finally listened to the audiobook for this after having it on my Kobo account for years. I've been intrigued by this author for a while because one of my friends really enjoyed her work (and binge read it a few years back). While this wasn't the best romance book I've ever read, I can see why there's hype behind R.S. Grey--the writing is fun, quick, flirty, and humorous. I loved the pup in this and how it had such a massive personality and was basically a main character alongside the FMC and the MMC. I also loved that the story did follow through with the idea of him being trained. I did like the characters together--the sexy new guy in a small town and the awkward beautiful girl who doesn't realize how many men actually want her? Sign me up. But a part of why this one wasn't super memorable for me was that even though I enjoyed these two characters, I didn't fully get the spark. It all felt very fast and the drama at the end felt forced. Would I read more books by this author? Definitely. But I will enjoy them simply as light and quick summer reads that won't linger too long in my brain after the fact.

57. Coach by Devney Perry--âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
Listen, a woman can only see so many people reading this and adding it to their TBRs before caving. Also, hi, I'm a sucker for a single parent romance...that is also lowkey forbidden. Not the biggest fan of second chance romances, but this one was delicious enough with angst that it wiped away that sense of frustration. I really enjoyed this--it was spicy, had a good few stolen kisses, had one hell of an office scene, and had two characters who oozed enough sexual tension to make your toes curl. I can see why so many people are jumping on this bandwagon. Honestly, it's always the football player and never the football coach. This was a nice change of pace. My main complaint is the awkward af prologue. I thought it was too quick and really, really awkward dialogue-wise. That alone could potentially be off-putting because the writing style is stilted and so different from the rest of the book--as if it was an addition during one final edit. There was some good communication in this one and the mother-daughter relationship in this broke my heart. I'm excited to read the next one in this series!

[Free Audiobooks] Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers & You Can't Say That!: Writers For Young People Talk About Censorship etc. [Award-Winning 1970s History Drama & YA Storyteller Interviews]
The annual SYNC Summer of Listening program encouraging literacy among teens by giving away a themed weekly pair of audiobooksâ1 modern or non-fiction, 1 classic or dramaâreturns for another year, courtesy of sponsor AudioFile Magazine and participating publishers.
This 1st week's theme is âFreedom to Knowâ, with works focusing on the importance of access to information and freedom of expression, and obstacles placed in their way, available from Thursday April 27th through Wednesday May 3rd:
Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers by Geoffrey Cowan, a professor at the University of Southern California, & the late Leroy Aarons, a journalist at the Washington Post who reported on the original story, read by a full cast from L. A. Theatre Works. This is an historical docudrama, recorded from a performance in front of a live audience, about The Washington Post newspaper's struggle with U.S. President Richard Nixon's administration over the publication of the Pentagon Papers, documents detailing the extent of the government's actions in the Vietnam War, previously unknown to the public. The audiobook recording for this was a winner of the Earphones Award, and the play itself won the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Gold Award.
You Can't Say That!!: Writers for Young People Talk about Censorship, Free Expression, and the Stories They Have to Tell compiled and edited by Leonard S. Marcus, read by an assorted cast from Brilliance Audio/Candlewick. This audiobook uses actors to reenact interviews between the editor and 13 writers of controversial books for kids and young adults, including notable authors of prize-winning vintage and modern YA classics like Katherine Paterson (Bridge to Terabithia) and Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) and bestsellers such as David Levithan.
The freebies are available via Overdrive's Sora service (listenable via browser on their website, or via their mobile app for iOS & Android devices).
To claim them, you'll need to register on the SYNC website with a valid email address to use in a Sora account, using the setup code and directions in the instructions in SYNC's FAQ (no need to re-register if you've participated in previous years' giveaways), clicking âBorrowâ to add them to your Sora library as a permanent loan. NB: if you need to free up space on your device later, follow the instructions in the FAQ to only âdelete filesâ and DO NOT âReturnâ the title, which would remove your future access.
Offered worldwide through Wednesday May 3rd until just before midnight Eastern Time, available via the Sora website and app. You can also browse AudioFile Magazine's planned season list to see what will be offered in the weeks ahead and if there's anything you'd especially like to get.

Top 10 Google Reviewers in The USA
Online reviews of your firm are critical, and content is essential. Google reviews are more important than ever for businesses. Customers want detailed first-hand information from trusted online peers to help them make decisions and learn about the customer experience. Google reviews can completely impact your business. Because Google reviews are so popular among users, there is a high demand for them. Receiving and replying to reviews will improve your local search rankings. If you have more reviews, Google will award you more. A greater quantity of reviews may also make you appear more trustworthy to buyers online. If your business profile has a higher number of reviews, a customer may choose you above the competitors. So, it is essential to realize the importance of Google reviews. If you are searching for the Top 10 Google Reviewers in the USA, this article will help you out!
How Do Google Reviews Work?
All marketers and business owners must understand the relevance of customer reviews. Customers will search for you on the internet before making a physical purchase decision. Google is the fastest-growing review platform at the moment, so Google reviews are more crucial than ever. Reviews have a direct impact on local SEO ranking and are an important part of any local search marketing strategy. At the same time, it is an efficient tool for convincing a customer to purchase your product or service.
Top 10 Google Reviewers in the USA:
Here is a list of some of the best Google review providers in the USA â
Google My Business
Googleâs Pigeon algorithm upgrade improves local search results by using distance and location ranking criteria. So, for your companyâs website to be correctly optimized for search, you should create verified profiles with local directories, particularly Googleâs âGoogle My Business.â Obtaining reviews, comments, images, and so on, particularly on Google, can help you rank higher in searches.
Yelp
Yelp is a free review website where customers may rate companies on a five-star scale. Any business can create a free Yelp profile, and individuals can create their free profiles to rate businesses. You are welcome to respond to reviewers, but because Yelpers are a close-knit community, we encourage taking a fair and respectful approach to any unfavorable reviews you get.
Trustpilot
Trustpilot is a fast-growing, community-driven customer review platform established in Denmark that has spread into 65 countries, including the United States. The business platform assists enterprises all around the world in proactively collecting consumer reviews. Customers write both product and seller reviews, ensuring that they are third-party verified.
Yahoo! Localworks
Yahoo! Local reviews, like Google My Business ratings, allow people to publish reviews of businesses using a five-star rating system. Other major review sites are integrated into your business profile by Yahoo! Localworks. Instead of logging into multiple accounts, you can access all of your customer reviews in one spot.
GBP Cheap
They offer complete assurance and non-drop reviews. The website is even more trustworthy due to its 24-hour customer assistance, prompt or on-time delivery, and prompt task start. Along with speedy shipment, they also provide a 15-day money-back promise and a satisfaction guarantee to their consumers. Their reviews assist your organization because they help it rather than hurt it in terms of local SEO. They also have an excellent customer service manager on staff who is always willing to assist. They ensure that as soon as they learn about your Google review criteria, they will begin working on your package and deliver it to you as soon as possible.
Angieâs List
Angieâs List is a âhigher-endâ review site geared for US-based service businesses, as users must pay for membership. However, you get what you paid for. The reviews, which are graded on an A-F scale, are often well-thought-out, with little of the yelling and screaming that is more common on free review sites. The reviews cannot be anonymous, which helps to reduce fraudulent or misleading reviews, and businesses are permitted to respond to the reviews written about them.
CitySearch
Citysearch offers the same functionality as the other review sites in this category, but what distinguishes it is the ability to search for the âbest ofâ winners in each city. It has a bi-modal rating system of thumbs up/thumbs down. This is based on the percentage of users/scouts who have recommended the company. There are over 20 categories to choose from on Citysearch. Each one displays results that have been filtered to the place you specify.
Influenster
If you sell consumer products, Influenster is a review site you should be aware of. Influenster publishes user reviews and news on consumer products, especially skincare, beauty, makeup, hair, and other health and beauty items. Visitors can search the site by brand name or an individual product, and Influenster links to websites where they can purchase the products.
G2 Crowd
If your company provides software, you should have a presence on G2 Crowd. Every month, over 5 million software buyers read the 1+ million user reviews on this website to help them make better purchasing decisions. G2 Crowd is similar to Yelp in that it operates in a narrow specialty. Companies are graded on a five-star system, with ratings ranging from setup and simplicity of use to security and support.
TrustRadius
TrustRadius, like G2 Crowd, is an online review portal for software companies. Users can see what their LinkedIn connections are saying about specific pieces of software on TrustRadius because reviewers on the site are authenticated using LinkedIn to ensure theyâre users (although the reviews themselves can still be anonymous). This increases the readerâs faith in the site.
End Words
Customer reviews are bits of feedback offered to a company based on their experience with the company. These reviews might be public or private, and they are gathered by the firm or third-party review sites. Businesses can assess customer happiness and enhance customer relations by collecting and evaluating customer feedback. For easy and customized Google Reviews, you can always rely on GBP Cheap.

As someone who grew up watching an unhealthy amount of Disney movies and romcoms, you couldnât help but dream, that someday your prince charming would come riding in on a white horse to whisk you away from your boring mundane life.
Someone you could love and hold forever, whoâd do the same for you. Someone whoâd always be there for you, to pick you up when you fall, to make you laugh when all you want to do is cry. Someone whoâd be your everything and treat you as if youâre the most special person in the whole world.
But adulthood killed all those dreams all too easily. You learned the hard way that people didnât really belong to each other. They barely even listened to when another person was talking.
You thought you came close a couple of times, but you never did find your special person. Everyone walks on their paths alone. And maybe it was better that way. You werenât sure if you could ever completely open up and give yourself to someone else.
That was until Steve came along. He was someone as lost as you and even lonelier. Finding himself in a world he no longer recognised and among people he couldnât really trust. It didnât take that long for him to trust you.
You had put on Snow White which was Steveâs favorite from back in his day. You couldnât help but insert yourself in the fairy-tale. After all Steve did always call you his princess.
âSteve?â You mumbled into his chest laying on top of him as the end credits played.
âYes, sugar?â He replied running his hands through your hair before drawing small soothing patterns on your back.
He only had to move his nose an inch to smell your hair and get a whiff of your soft soothing scent. Who knew something so simple could be so blissful.
As much as he loved taking you out on the town and courting you to show you a good time and do all the things he never thought he could, he also loved spending these quiet evenings in with you. Where it was just him and you, the rest of the world just seemed to disappear. He wouldnât trade them for anything.
âNever mind,â You shook your head. âItâs soon. Youâll scare him off.â That incessant annoying voice in your head said.
âHey,â He propped your chin up to make you look at him. His heart melted at your glossy eyes. So vulnerable and sensitive. Maybe it was what drew him to you. Your ability to be so sweet and wear your heart on your sleeve. Something he never could do. âWhat is it?â He asked lowly caressing your cheek. Not wanting to push you too much but he couldnât really help himself when you looked so sad either.
âDo you think...â You whispered and licked your lips âWeâll be together forever. Like them.â You picked at the threads on his shirt too scared to look at him.
He smiled down at you. Getting up to sit straight and adjust you properly in his lap. âI know we will sweetheart.â He said confidently as if it was a fact.
You looked up at him still holding onto his shirt, as if heâd disappear if you let go for even a second âAnd do you think youâll always love me?â You wanted to know.
âYes, Iâm sure of it. Where is this even coming from?â He frowned âI know... I donât always do a good job of showing you I love you. This is new to me. Iâve never had a girlfriend.â And like the dork that he was he couldnât help the goofy grin he made every time he referred to you as his girl âBut Iâll do better,â He promised and pressed a long lingering kiss on your forehead to seal it. He cleared his throat to ask âWhat do you think I should do better?â
âNo. Youâre amazing, Steve, you donât need to change.â You said giving his plump pink lips a quick peck âItâs just scary. How much I love you and how it can all go away if Iâm not careful. People break up everyday and over the stupidest of things or over nothing. I donât want that to be us.â You sighed unloading all your anxieties.
He nodded taking your words in âI understand. Iâm scared of losing you too. More than youâll ever know.â He paused looking for the best words âWhat we can do is maybe talk about such things?â He slowly suggested rocking you back and forth in his arms.
You happily tucked your head in the crook of his neck, hugging him close to you. Falling for his sweet words and him. Convinced that nothing would come between you both.
***
He got down on one knee not long after to pop the big question with an even bigger diamond to really show you how committed he was.
You were on cloud nine. You felt nothing could ever bring you down that you only had happier times to look forward to.
Until one fateful day, you didnât realise it then but it was probably when everything started going to hell, Sharon Carter got back from her year long mission in Europe.
You were only an accountant working for the Avengers. Being so close to Steve did give you some influence, which you were ashamed of liking a bit too much, but no one was ever really scared of you. You heard chatter about her and your Steve. And how now he would surely ditch his ânormal and plain fiancĂŠ'. They never tried that hard to hide it from you. They probably thought you werenât here for the long haul.
âHey Angieâ You nervously called for your desk mate. âWhy is everyone so obsessed with Steve and Agent Carter?â
âOh you mean Staron?â She grinned before frowning, âOh Iâm sorry! Thatâs just what people call them. Not me though! You know how hard I ship you two.â She squeezed your shoulder in order to console you.
âYeah but why? I mean did they use to date or something...â You trailed off knowing that it was something you should be asking your fiancĂŠ not your co-worker.
You had tried a couple of times but you were too afraid to come off as jealous or controlling. That was the last thing you wanted to be. You expected him to give you enough space to be your own person, so itâd only be fair for you to do the same.
âI donât really know.â She stroked her chin as if in thought âYouâll just have to ask Captain Rogers. Nothing was ever confirmed they were just rumors. Even Iâll admit they would make gorgeous blonde babies. But girl! You donât have anything to worry about! Youâre the one who has the ring.â She tried her best to assure you but the seeds of doubt and fear had taken roots in your mind.
Steve assured you that there was never anything between them. They flirted with the idea of dating for a while before she went away, he doubted thereâd ever be anything between them. He couldnât imagine being with anyone else. Not when heâs so madly in love with you.
He was so convincing and charming.
The things that set him apart from everyone else, which you loved about him, were his honesty and loyalty. He blamed his Ma and 1920s raising but you didnât care. He was perfect in your eyes. He didnât need to fit in. Those things made him Steve Rogers. Your Steve.
***
You had never been more ashamed than when you went through Steveâs things to get some sort of clue. You went through his sketches to find if he was secretly harboring any kind of feelings about her. You only found sketches mostly consisting of you and the Avengers, some of Bucky and his mom.
You sighed in relief, but then, at the bottom of his drawer you found a sketch of Sharon drawn with charcoal pencil. You couldnât help but cry tears of frustration and pain, tearing the sketch up and flushing it so he wouldnât find out. You knew you made a grave mistake, even as you started snooping you knew nothing good would come out of it, yet you couldnât help yourself. In the end you only upset yourself.
Steve got back from work shortly after with your favorite take out, he kissed you hello. He knew something was up but you simply lied and chalked it up to pms or something.
He was ever so understanding. Giving you a nice massage and drawing you a bath. You decided then, that you wouldnât look for anything anymore. If Steve was being unfaithful you didnât want to know. Youâd rather live in this beautiful peaceful bubble of ignorance.
***
The next few months were tough. All your wedding planning had taken a backseat as Steve had started to look for his friend Bucky, who also happened to be the winter soldier, with Sam and Sharon.
You didnât really have an answer when your mother pestered you about going wedding shopping. You didnât know how to tell her that you doubted if there would be a wedding at all. It would break her heart. Especially after she had come to love Steve as much as you did.
You never complained. How could you? The whole world needed him much more than you ever could. And he didnât seem to need you anymore.
He never had to have time for you anymore. Late nights at the offices, long missions with Sharon.
One rare night he was home for dinner, you were too busy sulking in your self pity to actually enjoy his company after heâd deprived you of it for so long.
You chose to give him the silent treatment, not speaking more than two words to him. He noticed. Of course he did, Captain America, always so perceptive and smart.
He tried to pry answers out of you for a while before his phone started ringing and he excused himself to go pick it up.
âWhy do you always go into the other room to take your calls?â You asked when he got back placing his phone down on the table. Playing with your food not having the strength to look him in the eye and confront him.
He visibly stiffened at the underlying accusation in your question. He had grown annoyed of having the same discussion with you again and again. But he decided to bite his tongue. It was his job to make you feel secure in your relationship.
âItâs confidential information, doll. You know that.â He sighed.
You hummed âBut you can tell me who you were speaking to right?â You finally looked up and you wished you hadnât. He clearly wasnât happy, his eyebrows furrowed in a frown and his jaw clenched, how you hated confrontation. Not that you ever thought youâd be confronting your Steve.
âIt was Sharon.â He spit.
âOf course.â You scoffed going back to staring at your food as he rolled his eyes.
âWhat do you want me to say? I know you arenât exactly fond of her but Iâm not going to lie just to make you happy. Because thatâs not who I am! I donât lie.â He ranted holding up his phone âWhy donât you go through it? Maybe that will make you happy.â
You shook your head rejecting his offer. Even though you were tempted to, you knew Steve was smart. He was Captain America for gods sake. Heâd know how to cover his tracks. If he didnât want you to find something, you probably wouldnât.
So you finished your dinner, angrily stuffing the food in your mouth while sneering at him and then left him to do the dishes.
You put yours and Steve's laundry in the washer. Even though you were salty with him you still did your half of the chores. Checking his pockets for any receipts or bills. But then you saw what looked like a shinning golden thread. You pulled at it to find that it was a long blonde hair. Which was clearly not yours.
You thought of going to Steve with it. But if you had to hear another one of his lame excuses youâd probably drown yourself.
So, for the first time, you simply went to bed angry with him. When he tried to talk to you, you retorted with a snarky or hurtful comment or didnât speak at all. You knew just how crazy that would drive him.
***
You groaned for the fifteenth time in the past hour, your leg impatiently shaking under the table. He was an hour late. He was someone who took pride in always being punctual and sharp, clearly you werenât important enough for him to consider your feelings. You decided to pick up your phone and call him.
âWhere are you?!â You hissed as soon as he picked up. Too angry to even bother to say hello.
âIâm at work. Iâm so sorry, doll, I wonât be able to make it. Something important came up.â He apologized. His voice laced with guilt. Which wouldâve been enough to convince you maybe a month or so ago, but at this point he had missed far too many dinners and dates.
âRight. Of course. More important than me obviously.â You rolled your eyes.
âYou know thatâs not true â "
âYou didnât even bother calling meâ You screamed into your phone.
âI did call.â He sighed âYou didnât pick up and Iâm kinda busy right now.â
âYeah I didnât pick up! I was cooking a meal for our anniversary! You know what? I donât care because you clearly donât either.â You said hanging up without giving him a chance to speak.
You had packed some of the leftovers up for Steve but you decided to dump them all in the bin. He didnât deserve your cooking.
You haphazardly threw the tupperware in the sink. Torn between punching a wall and hugging a pillow to cry out all your frustrations. You chose to rigorously scrub and wash the dishes.
Having spent some of your excess energy you sat in front of your dresser, putting some petroleum jelly on your palms to sooth the burn.
You sighed at the sight of your sparkly diamond. You couldnât bear to look at it anymore. It reminded you of a happier and simpler time. The last thing you wanted was a complicated or dramatic relationship.
As you slid the ring off your finger placing it in your jewellery box, you couldnât help but ponder on whether it was just as much of your fault as well.
You started packing your clothes into a small bag. Maybe you could spend a few nights at your mothers house until you can clear your head.
***
Steve hastily opened your apartment door with his keys. âHoney, Iâm home.â He called out for you.
He rubbed his face, a nervous pit forming in his stomach. He knew he had been prioritising his work over you for weeks now, he didnât know the extent of it until you told him off on the phone and then didnât pick up any of his calls. He asked Sam to cover for him for the night as he made his way back home.
His enhanced hearing picked up on movements in the bedroom, he followed the sounds of your rustling, tossing his jacket on the couch.
His worst fears came true as he looked at you carelessly stuffing your clothes in a cabin bag. You spared him a glance before zipping the bag up.
He took a deep breath, he had to say the right words before he fucks up the situation more than he already has. âSweetheart ââ
âSteve, Iâm leaving. I think we should take a break,â Your voice cracking a bit but you tried to be resilient and strong, you sighed as you saw the heartbroken look on his face as his jaw dropped âitâs hard for me too but itâs just not working anymore.â
âIs it hard for you?â He spit. âEveryone has problems, I just need one more chance.â
âI wonât let you break my heart again.â You swallowed as you felt tears stream down your cheeks, you wiped them with the back of your hand. âIâll always love you but Iâm tired of being disappointed and suspicious and jealous. Itâs not who I am, itâs not who I want to be.â
âWh â what do you mean suspicious?â He asked as his brows furrowed.
âI think you know what I mean. I know Iâm not like a model or a kickass spy or unique. But I still want to be special to someone. Iâm so...simple. I thought that was enough for you and us.â
âWhat are you even talking about?â He lost his composure and calm as his eyes watered, blurring his vision, he held onto your forearms, needing your touch the most right now, as if you won't leave if he held on tight enough. âIâm not special either.â
To which you scoffed. âThatâs debatable.â
âItâs true. Captain America is special. Heâs the superhero. Iâm just Steve.â
âI know thatâs what you think,â You said shaking his hands off of you and staring at the floor, not bearing to look at him âBut itâs not the reality. Captain America is a part of you. And I think... maybe Captain America deserves someone extraordinary like Agent 13.â You let out a humorless chuckle.
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â He asked in his stern Captain voice, clenching his fists having had about enough of this.
You stiffened as a shiver ran down your spine at his tone. He had never spoken to you like that. He reserved that tone for his teammates and subordinates, and more often than not Tony. But not you. You were his precious baby.
You felt as if you were compelled to look up at him, he wasnât crying anymore but his jaw had hardened, his face and neck flushed red. âSharon. I mean,â You took a deep breath âI know thereâs nothing between you two... probably.â you whispered as he raised a brow at you.
âBut your work and duty will always come first and I know it is a good thing. But itâs not what I want. I thought I could handle it, the whole world needing you more than me and coming before me,â You spoke so lowly but you knew he could hear you, âbut I canât. I donât think I ever will. A break will put things into perspective for both of us.â
âYou have no idea what youâre talking about.â He growled as you rolled your eyes. âHow could you think those things? I need you more than anything else.â His anger was fuelled as you scoffed again, as if he was lying. âDonât you dare hink that thereâs anything past or present that Iâd put before you. Youâre the only thing that matters. I promise.â
âYou may believe that, but your words only carry so much weight when theyâre not followed up by actions. I know youâre not the cheating type,â You rambled pulling on your hair and sighing, it was all so overwhelming âI donât know what to believe. When I go days without speaking to you â what else am I supposed to believe?â
He hesitantly snaked an arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him, relieved that you didnât stop him or push him away again, âJust give me one chance to prove myself. I know Iâll never be worthy of you but I donât want us to give up so easily. Not without putting up a fight.â He gritted pulling your chin up as your hands played with the buttons on his shirt. âAnd you know how good I am at putting up a fight. Iâll always fight for you,â He smiled pulling your chin up to look at your pretty face.
âOkay,â You sniffled. âYouâre always so good with words.â You smiled shaking your head.
He hummed at that. âI got you to go out with me, didnât I?â
âWhat are you doing here anyway? Didnât you have work?â you wanted to know.
He shushed you, pulling you into his chest and pressing his face in the crook of your neck. He craved your warmth and comfort especially after almost losing you. âIâll never take you for granted again.â He nuzzled your neck before kissing it. âWe can go venue hunting tomorrow. For the wedding.â
You smiled in his hold âWell I donât know about that. Maybe the wedding planning can wait for a while.â
He hummed as he rested his chin on top of your head. He had his work cut out for him if he intended to keep you. He made a mental note of calling Tony first thing in the morning. âI hate it when we fight.â He said rocking you in his arms âBut I like the making up part.â
You playfully smacked his chest. You just knew he was cheekily grinning. âI agree.â You giggled.
You hadnât fought a whole lot throughout your relationship, but the make up sex was always amazing.
You gulped nervously as he captured your lips in a bruising and breath taking kiss. Letting you know just how much he loved you. You hummed as his hands caressed the soft skin of your ass, squeezing it lightly before he pulled you up.
You yelped as you wrapped your legs around his narrow waist. You trailed kisses down his jaw as he carried you to your bed. Giving him a nip or two here and there, smiling against his throat as you felt the vibrations of his moans.
He gently dropped you on your comfortable mattress, you giggled as you bounced.
Steve hovered above you, he was so large, he was the only thing you could look at. Your shaky hands worked on unbuttoning his shirt as he pulled your night shirt up, groaning at the sight of your soft nipples, hardening so easily at his touch. He pulled one in his mouth as he thoroughly sucked on it.
âOh, Steve.â You moaned as his hand came up to pay some attention to your other breast, fondling it in his hand before tugging your stiff peak with his fingers. You gasped as he bit you. âOh Iâll definitely feel that tomorrow,â You sighed pulling your shirt over your head as he made his way down your body, settling between your legs.
He looked at you as you bit your lip, your breasts laid flat as you chest heaved with anticipation. He let out a guttural sound as he saw and smelled just how aroused and wet you were for him. He licked a firm stripe up your warm folds before capturing your bundle of nerves in his mouth, harshly sucking on it as he worked you up with his fingers to get you ready for him.
The moans and mewls from your mouth and the squelching of his fingers were something akin to a symphony to his ears. He cooed as you thrashed wildly when he pulled away. âSteve!â You whined.
âJust a minute baby. You remember what we talked about? Patience.â He said as he quickly got rid of his clothes. His throbbing erection ached to be inside you. But he couldnât help but tease his sweet girl a bit as he stroked himself above you, much to your displeasure.
He chuckled as you kicked your legs. âPatience,â He reminded you again as he bent to suck a bruise on your breast. He pulled away with a pop, pleased with the way your skin bruised under his assault, âSo youâll always remember how much I love you.â He murmured in your neck as he slowly entered your channel.
He stayed inside you just like that for a few minutes, it was comfortable like a warm hug, it felt like home because you were his home. No matter how many times he made love to you, he could never get used to how wet and tight you felt.
He sucked a few more love bites on your neck he knew youâd give him hell for later but in the moment he couldnât bring himself to care.
He rocked his hips, slowly and tortuously pulling out of you before pushing back in till he bottomed out, searching for your special spot, he knew he found it when you threw your head back and started blabbering nonsense.
Your hips matched his pace, trying their best to keep up with his super strength and agility. He propped himself up on his elbows, he needed to see you, see your face twist in pleasure as he did such sinful things to you. Except they rarely ever felt sinful to him. It felt as if he was expressing his love for you by pleasing you and worshipping you.
âHow could you ever think I donât care about you?â He asked not really expecting an answer, what with you being so preoccupied and your mind too far gone to listen to him, as he drove his hips up harshly.
You shook your head muttering apologises and chanting his name as he felt you clench around him. Your nails dug into his shoulders, holding onto him as your orgasm hit you in waves of pleasure.
âI need you to say it.â He demanded. His thrusts lost any sense of rhythm simply pounding into you with abandon as he chased his release. âSay that you know that I love you.â He rasped as his hips stuttered. âSay. It.â He punctuated with a few more thrusts before he emptied inside you, panting into the crook of your neck.
âI know you love me Steve.â You mumbled as you ran your fingers through his hair. âI love you more.â
You felt him shake his head as he pecked your lips. âThatâs not possible.â
âYes it is!â You huffed incredulously.
âAgree to disagree.â He stated not really in the mood to fight with you anymore as you smacked his bicep, scoffing at him before muttering a âwhateverâ under your breath. He pulled you on top of him still connected to your heat as he felt his spend spill out of you. âCan we stay like this for a bit?â He asked somewhat shyly.
You hummed, âYes of course.â You sleepily mumbled against his soft and warm chest.
He listened to your breathing and steady heartbeat as you slipped into a dreamless slumber.
He couldnât sleep. He only ever slept a couple of hours every night and now after everything that perspired, he was scared heâd fall asleep and youâd be gone when he wakes up.
There was no way in hell heâd ever let you. Heâd give up the shield if he had to. He was as stupidly stubborn as you if not more. He was sure heâd fix everything as he kissed the top of your head and covered the pair of you with the comforter. So youâd feel as warm and comfortable as him.

Japan
Directorâs cut version of a review originally published in The Wire 383, January 2016
Japan: A Foreign Place
Anthony Reynolds
Burning Shed Hbk 209pp
Anthony Reynolds's biography is the first book to treat Japan's career seriously and at length. For a long time the British music press saw the band as something of a joke. The solo works of former members â particularly David Sylvian â have at times overshadowed the output of their short lifetime. Reynolds does the worthwhile public service of bringing together a solid mass of facts, details and opinions that have not had a public airing before and fleshing out that history. In particular, heâs the first to marshall a detailed account of the shifting tensions within the band that led to their demise. Half-truths circulated for years about the clash of egos between Sylvian and bassist Mick Karn, ending with Karn's live-in girlfriend, photographer Yuka Fuijii, leaving him for Sylvian and sealing their fate; Reynolds gives us the facts and handles the dissonant perspectives of participants very deftly.
But whatever its qualities Reynolds' is still very much a generic rock biography, one that leaves the reader wondering whether it's the best form for the subject. Aside from a young Karn's dalliance with Angie Bowie and some standard-issue touring horror stories â even at the height of their fame the band travelled in a bus that smelled of âstale vomitâ â there's very little sensational material in their story. The image of sophistication and decadence they projected disguised an isolated group of workaholic blokes from the south London working class. Sylvian âput work before everything elseâ, even sleep, aided by a short-lived coke habit. Groupies â âPrincess Diana and Jerry Hall typesâ, as tour lighting manager Par Can put it, who stacked shelves at Tesco by day â weren't tolerated on tour. Lacking much life to latch onto, Reynolds's narrative boils down to a succession of recording dates and increasingly tiresome, claustrophobic jaunts. Meanwhile, as drummer Steve Jansen recounts, âwe had buried our true selves within a public image, which was a vital form of expression, a liberationâ, but also another kind of trap.
This disconnect Japan lived through, between experience and image, forms the kernel of their music of masks and disembodied voices, glamour and horror â the âdialectical imageâ of postmodernity and our own moment of endless simulacra. But in Reynolds's narrative life overrides art. He describes the fissure between reality and publicity â which gave the alienated emotion of their songs its positive and negative moments â without analysing its importance. The signifiers that drift through the group's great period â the initially meaningless choice of name, Tin Drum's dĂŠtournement of Chinese kitsch, the purloining of Motown and Satie, the pop-futurist tradition of Kraftwerk inherited through Yellow Magic Orchestra â were to some extent arbitrary, pulled from their context by whim. But even the strange, unyielding spaces of Tin Drum aren't simply enigmas; some explanation is possible. Work tracing the ideas and images that came into the band's orbit and how they used and restructured them would have been invaluable, as Michael Bracewell's Remake/Remodel, on Japan's great progenitors Roxy Music, proved. It's good to get solid details about the band's sartorial evolution, including some delightful photos of the young Karn and Sylvian (including a better look at the Anthony Price jacket from the cover of Gentlemen Take Polaroids), but Reynolds' handling of fashion is far from sophisticated.
Neither is he all that compelling on the music itself. Describing Quiet Life, the album that began the band's path to the avant-garde dark heart of 80s pop, as âunique but recognisably palatable pop musicâ is a descent into Tony Blackburn territory. He is strong on the technical aspects of the band's changing studio practice â maybe a little too strong at times, as we get reams of detail about preferred instrument brands. But he still gives a coherent picture of a conventional group moving, via the laboratory of the studio, into a compositional form closer to Eno's ambient records or the great Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaborations: sound as rich and intentless as the currents of dream. The band formed a strange bridge between the studio craftsmanship of mid-70s pop â Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan were among their favourite artists â and the brief flourishing of New Pop, bypassing punk entirely. It was precisely such residual traditionalism, and the shelter of 70s-hippie label Virgin, that allowed the disturbing experiment of Tin Drum to proceed under the protective camouflage of chart success.
The great lacuna in this story is Sylvian. He declined to contribute to the book, although Reynolds draws on interviews Sylvian has given over the years. (Karn died in 2011, but published a memoir of Japan that Reynolds quotes extensively.) It would barely make a difference if he had: concealing himself in plain sight, the deep cover agent of pop and experimental music wouldn't do anything so vulgar as give himself away to a mere biographer, except perhaps to present another of the masks that he's hidden behind over his career â post-glam siren, New Romantic balladeer, cosmopolitan fourth-worlder, the Howard Hughes of UK improv. The portrait that emerges here â of the frontman as a vain, petulant control freak, but also an âordinary guyâ behind the shades â is intriguing but sketchy, an aspect that speaks to the real nature of the bookâs incompleteness.
Reynolds makes some effort to pencil in the details of Sylvian and younger brother Jansen's childhood in South London, but clearly cannot find the sort of apparently revealing detail that biography thrives on. He emphasises how deeply ordinary â how dull, even by the local standards of 1970s Catford â their background was. Their father was a bricklayer and the family struggled to remain in the respectable fraction of the working class. Sylvian would later make the paradoxical suggestion that âthere was a survivalist elementâ to his self-fashioning in the matrix of art, androgyny and apparent vulnerability. (As detailed in Fred and Judie Vermorel's Starlust, such signs made Sylvian into a fertile fantasy-figure for the group's fans, to the exclusion of other members.) Is this, as Mark Fisher has suggested, what Sylvian and Japan were hiding from, the âghosts of my lifeâ that turn success sour â the spectres of class trauma in a society where subculture would soon be rendered extinct? A real exploration of the band would need to pore deeply through these contradictions of pop at the cusp of neoliberalism, but Reynolds's is a nice provisional start.

Review - The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person
Title: The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person Author: Frederick Joseph Publisher: Candlewick Press Availability: December 1, 2020 Review copy: ARC via publisher
Summary: âWe donât see color.â âI didnât know Black people liked Star Wars!â âWhat hood are you from?â For Frederick Joseph, life in a mostly white high school as a smart and increasingly popular transfer student was full of wince-worthy moments that he often simply let go. As he grew older, however, he saw these as missed opportunities not only to stand up for himself, but to spread awareness to the white friends and acquaintances who didnât see the negative impact they were having and who would change if they knew how.
Speaking directly to the reader, The Black Friend calls up race-related anecdotes from the authorâs past, weaving in his thoughts on why they were hurtful and how he might handle things differently now. Each chapter includes the voice of at least one artist or activist, including Tarell Alvin McCraney, screenwriter of Moonlight; April Reign, creator of #OscarsSoWhite; Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give; and eleven others. Touching on everything from cultural appropriation to power dynamics, âreverse racismâ to white privilege, microaggressions to the tragic results of overt racism, this book serves as conversation starter, tool kit, and invaluable window into the life of a former âtoken Black kidâ who now presents himself as the friend many of us need. Back matter includes an encyclopedia of racism, providing details on relevant historical events, terminology, and more.
Review:Â The title really does explain the contents. It's meant to be a how-to guide for being a better white person. Frederick Joseph has volunteered to be the Black friend for white readers. He's taken on the job of educating folks, but does remind readers that this is his choice and that Black folks are have no obligation to be teaching white people what they need to know about racism and how to be a better human. He also has a secondary purpose of providing affirmation for people of color. There is an acknowledgment of the trauma and pain that he and the other participants have experienced, and he also points to the beauty of the differences in people.
The whole book is written in a very conversational manner and he did succeed in making it feel like sitting down to chat with someone about their experiences. There is a bonus of brief interviews with other people so it wasn't only his voice. During these chats, the reader witnesses many situations and can see the humanity in folks and how to act and/or speak in respectful ways--or not. The information is accompanied with asides pointing readers to Google to get a little background or context or sometimes pointing to Youtube or music streaming services. The media isn't included, though it would be amazing to have those things embedded or linked in a digital book. I found myself setting aside the book over and over again to satisfy my curiosity. I listened to a lot of music and even saw an incredible slam dunk. It was a bit distracting, but also added a lot to the experience.
The conversational style makes this an easy read in one way, but there is no avoiding discomfort. Frederick Joseph shares stories that cannot have been easy to revisit with the intensity it takes to write down in a book. It's hard to sit with some of the emotions he clearly experienced. Another layer of difficulty is that white folks are forced to look in the mirror and think about how some of our beliefs and the way we move through the world have contributed to creating or maintaining the white power structures and the racism in our culture. We are called to hold ourselves accountable and to also actively disrupt racism.
Recommendation: Get it soon. This will be a helpful book for many white people who are on the path of antiracism. It's engaging and Joseph shares stories that include examples of his own problematic thinking and behavior so it doesn't feel like he's talking down. It could also be helpful for people of color to see the experiences and situations and know that they are not alone.

Female characters and sexist tropes in Danganronpa
Because why not, Iâm bored. This is... some data ? Do of that what you will, haha. Itâs another set of data I collected for a larger analysis, but since I will never publish it ( probably ), here we go.
List of tropes :
- Manipulate men with her womanly ways : pretty self-explainatory, some character will manipulate menâs emotions through seduction, or emotions at least. Honestly there are a lot of great characters out there that fall into this trope, but these characters are often seen as ireedemably evil, or - at best - femme fatale, with a cold, cold heart.
- Victim of sexual abuse/harassment : Whether itâs played for drama or for laugh. Can range from verbal abuse to straight-up rape. Of course there is nothing inherently bad about having female characters that are victims of sexual abuse in your story, but this topic needs to be treated with respect.
- Revolve Around Male Character(s) : Pretty self-explainatory, again. Can lead to fridging, especially in Danganronpa. Usually used to prop-up a male characterâs developement.
- 'Waifuâ material :Â I decided to use it for any female character that will fit these criteria : a) is of course incredibly attractive b) is completely unaware of that or of the way that her body is perceived by others c) is incredibly naive when it comes to dating/sex d) had actually very little contact with men through her life, because of specific circumstances e) will fall for a completely average guy, despite the fact that he is... well, completely average and does nothing specific on his end, just because he is the first guy that she spends time with.
- Sexist language or behaviour : Toward men, or women. Obviously we notice it toward men - some people on tumblr approve... to each their own, I guess - but itâs a lot less noticed toward women.
Danganronpa : Trigger Happy Havoc
Observations
- If youâre in Danganronpa and youâre manipulating men with your womanly ways, you are evil. Celes, Sayaka and Junko are probably the most hated female characters in the first game ( when, I remind you, a serial-murdered in included in the casting ).
- I absolutely despise the âpassâ given to women to be sexist in DR. I donât mean just sexist toward men, but sexist toward women as well. The comments made by Toko toward Asahina are despicable, unfunny, and frankly uncomfortable as far as Iâm concerned. Way more than, letâs say, Hifumiâs. You could justify Kyokoâs comments by her daddy issues, and Junko/Monokumaâs comments by... well, being herself.
- Asahina is the only one I qualified for the Waifu trope. I donât know if Iâm being unfair, but her âsuddenâ crush on Makoto, her gratuitious fanservice scenes and her childish behaviour made me think that it made sense to put her here.
- Toko was such headscratcher, because while, yes, her entire goal is to please her âMasterâ, Byakuya, Iâm re-reading the definition of this trope that I just wrote and... she doesnât qualify. She isnât fridged, she doesnât prop up Byakuyaâs developement, and she, de facto, does have her own shit to deal with beside her obsession with Byakuya. So just... take it as it is.
Danganronpa 2 : Goodbye Despair !
Observations :
- A lot less of evil manipulative women in this game. Mikan only qualify when hit by the Despair Discease, as for Hiyoko, itâs a complicated grey zone. She doesnât exactly manipulate the others with her womanly ways but more her very-young looking girl ways which is... better or worse, you decide.
- Half of the female cast was sexually harassed/abused. Sonia is sexually harassed during the first scene we see her. That seems a lot. Sure, this game relies on the characters having heavy backstory, but I wish they were a bit more creative with theit backstory. Also, this is really played for laugh multiple times which, I donât know about, but create a cognitive dissonance.
( I didnât include Mahiru in the list, even if technically, we can watch her naked without her giving her consent because a) I didnât drink that much bleach back so that I still remembered this scene, thank you very much b) this is a âbonusâ scene that I donât consider as canon, fight me )
- On my first draft, the âWaifuâ trope was the âBorn Sexy Yesterdayâ trope, but it could only be really applicable to Chiaki, as she is literally created as a naive child that doesnât know what holidays are in the body of a over-sexualized teenager. As it is, though, for the Waifu trope, Sonia qualifies big time. Akane and Mikan barely donât.
- Also Chiaki is lucky Iâm not taking into account Dr3.
- Ibuki was almost the unproblematic fav of the list, and then I remembered her behaviour whenever Mikan was humiliating herself, and so she will never be at Sakuraâs level, sorry Ibuki.
Danganronpa : Another Episode and Danganronpa 3 : The anime
Observations :
- The difference of treatment between Kotokoâs sexual abuse and Komaruâs sexual abuse is baffling. I donât know how this happened.
- Ruruka, being, you know a woman with womanly ways, is evil, and I love her.
- Chisaâs character is a trainwreck, but I genuinely have no idea if his character revolve around Munakata. It has to, right ? What would it revolve around, if not ? She does prop up his development, so I was like âgood enoughâ.
- I will not subject myself to the anime once again, so itâs totally possible that one of these character had sexist language and behaviour. If itâs Chisa, tell me, because she would almost hit a bingo with that.
Danganronpa V3 : Killing Harmony
Observations :
- Are all the FTEs in NDRV3 really, really stupid ? Yes. But at least, that means no sexual abuse in half of the female castâs past, and I will say itâs a win.
- That said, Iâm not taking in account the Love Hotelâs events. Once again a) bleach ainât cheap, you guys b) it would create such ridiculous bias when compared to other games... like, arguably the entire cast would have been sexually assaulted by Shuichi, and the âWaifuâ trope would also rack up a lot of points. That doesnât make a lot of sense. These events are still... a thing. Unfortunately.
- Angie is perfect, and blessed by Atua. Obviously.
- While Tenkoâs behaviour is making Himikoâs uncomfortable and could be considered sexual harrassment, I still didnât put Himiko in the âvictimâ category, though I suppose I could have. Double standards also get me, sometimes.
- Do Maki and Kaede revolve around a guy ? I personally would say no for Maki. Kaito is the one that props up her character development. Hell, he is the one getting fridged. I knew I had to mention it anyway, but to me she doesnât qualify. Kaede is a bit more difficult. No, until her death, would be the most correct answer. Then itâs damn Shuichi, we get it, you have a dead girlfriend, shut the heck up about it, thanks. Same thing for the Waifu trope for Kaede. She is fine when we are playing her, but during her FTE... damn.
- If you were wondering, Kaede threatens - and actually start - to rise Tsumugiâs skirt until Shuichi can see her panties. Tsumugi might be an evil mastermind, itâs still sexual harrasment in my book, though obviously not at the level of what we have in earlier games.
