Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon was presented this year at Baselworld. The high-tech piece uses modern design and manufacturing techniques. Its “tech” charm is doubled by a good looking appearance. The Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon has real diver watch capabilities: unidirectional diver bezel set by an external crown, Helium escape valve and crowns protection.
A skeletonised movement with tourbillon in a sports diving watch
Hands-on review Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon
I was always fascinated by the Angelus watches. U51 and its predecessor U50 made no exception. I have met the U51 Diver Tourbillon in the flesh during the Basel show. Before I share with you some watch description and specifications, please have a look at the video below.
youtube
The case: two interpretations
The high-performance sports watch look starts with the case. The case is manufactured in titanium. The size is generous – 45mm. But is was surprised by how good it looks on my small wrist and how comfortable and pleasant feels. I consider that the 12.47mm thickness helps a lot in this smaller wear sentiment.
An unusual design but extremely good looking
The case is rich in details. The diver’s case is adorned with sandblasted, brushed and polished surfaces. Considering how complicated is to get multiple finishes on titanium, Angelus gets my full respect for design and implementation.
The bezel is carved with an interesting pattern. Not sure if “pattern” is the right word in this case but certain is that the final shape reminds me of two things: the sea waves and the ratchet wheel design. So two interpretation: a romantic one – the infinite number of waves breaking at the shore and the ratcheting wheel that permits movement only in one direction – onto the future. Leaving the romanticism aside, the case design is beautiful: technical and aesthetical.
The crowns’ side of the case where the multiple finishes can be easily observable
The U51 Diver Tourbillon has two crowns. The two o’clock crown is for the unidirectional 60minutes bezel. The four o’clock crown is a classic winding and set type. Both are screwed-in, as it is mandatory for a diver watch. The crowns are decorated with the Angelus logo and have good tactile feedback.
The crowns are protected by subtle bumpers. The crown protection is smartly integrated into the over all design
On the left side of the case, at 9 o’clock, the watch is fitted with a Helium escapement valve. The U51 Diver Tourbillon is specified for 300m/1000feet depths. The valve is nicely integrated in the case design. The valve is protected by two bumpers.
The side case with visible Helium escape valve
The skeletonised lugs contribute to the watch’s lightweight. Angelus fitted the diver with a blue rubber strap decorated with an embossed Angelus logo and a titanium folding pin buckle.
The titanium pin buckle with brand’s logo
Dial: colourful and joyful, with an expected total legibility
The U51 offers an unusual diver display, with the remark that the skeletonized composition and construction is the trademark of Angelus. The brand’s language is recognisable without a doubt in the person of the U51 Diver Tourbillon.
The “face” of the U51 Diver Tourbillon
The dial is governed by several entities, each with its unique form and factor.
Another viewing angle of the dial
The chapter ring features the same spectacular carving as the bezel, recalling the waves. The unidirectional rotating ring dresses up with bright colours. The brand names them stormy blue and striking orange. Good names, I would say…
The blue and orange coloured chapter ring
The chapter ring is governed by the brand’s logo at twelve o’clock. The indexes use Arabic numeral in 5 minutes increments. In addition, there are Super-Luminova filled indexes.
The small seconds complication with orange Super-Luminova filled hand
The hands are another distinct elements in this set of entities. The hands also use bright colours Super-Luminova filling: orange for the hour hands and white for the minute hands. In low light, the dial spoils us with a special performance – excellent legibility.
A low light wristshot
As a diver watch, the U51 is provided with running seconds, mandatory to a diver watch as a witness of watch’s functionality. The small seconds sub-dial is placed at nine o’clock. The seconds’ hand is filled with orange luminescent, to signalise the “running seconds”
One-minute flying tourbillon
The last of the entities set is the one-minute flying tourbillon.
Calibre A-310 – a mechanical delight
Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon is powered by the high-tech Calibre A-310. The hand-wound movement is capable of 5 days of autonomy. The single barrel design is depleted by the tourbillon at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Or 4Hz – as it is otherwise known.
The back of the U51 reveals the other side of Calibre A-310
The tourbillon is positioned on the dial at seven o’clock. Its construction is interesting. The cage uses ball bearing for better stability. That is a more complex construction as the classical pivots system but comes with certain advantages.
Another view of the Calibre A-310
The flying tourbillon is appealing: an overall mirror polishing and bevelled edges enriched with fine polishing.
The tourbillon cage is nicely decorated
The skeletonised movement is well decorated. The bridges and the mainplate’ surfaces are sandblasted. This finish highlights the natural aspect and colour of the titanium. The movement’s gear train uses the six-spoke design exclusive to Angelus. The beauty of the Calibre A-310 can be observed on both sides of the watch.
The backside of the U51 Diver Tourbillon
Designed for perfection, entitled for admiration
I have to admit that I like Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon a lot. The watch features not only impressive technical details but also an unexpected appearance.
Tourbillon on a diver watch? Why not?!? One can enjoy a fantastic tourbillon watch daily and use it as a sporty tool piece. I do enjoy the funny, joyful glance of the U51. The colour theme fits unexpectedly well on this tourbillon watch.
U51 Diver Tourbillon is a bliss on the wrist. Extremely light for its dimension, due to titanium construction, the watch feels right on the wrist. I consider it such a special piece that breaks the canonical rules. Honestly, I would wear this piece anywhere. I would even take it, as it is, to a black-tie event. And if someone looks badly at my wrist. I will know for sure that is just envy. Pure envy!

Hands-On: Zelos Mirage Tourbillon
The Zelos Mirage Tourbillon is one of the latest watches from the still new Singapore-based watch brand. The Mirage Tourbillon is a high-end Swiss Made mechanism with a design that speaks to a particular generation of watch lover. It also comes with a really affordable price and shows what can happen when traditional names in Swiss watchmaking combine forces with the powerful entrepreneurial minds that are helping to carry the traditional watch industry into its next evolutionary phase.
Zelos was founded in 2014 and started as one of those brands whom you’d have no idea (at the time) would not only keep going, but also produce numerous successful watches eventually becoming a “real brand.” This is an important point to make because watch consumers are no doubt at times confused what to make of start up watch brands. Should you take them seriously if you like their creative energy, or should you sit by idly and wait a few years for them to prove themselves? It is true that while many start up brands fail, at least a few of them persist on, annually gaining legitimacy and the respect of even conservative watch lovers with loyalty only to the oldest names in horological luxury. Today, I feel that many start up watch makers not only offer viable alternatives to the traditional “big names,” but in more than once instance are themselves being groomed to be one of the big names in the future.
Zelos got itself started, as many modern watch brands do, on Kickstarter. In 2016, when aBlogtoWatch featured the Zelos Hammerhead Kickstarter campaign, it would have been impossible to know the company would not only diversify but also mature with age as it released new models. Zelos has made a name for itself in combining modern design with organic-feeling materials in the traditional categories of watches that do well in the market (such as diving sports watches and GMT travel watches). For this reason, I always encourage watch fans to keep an open mind about new brands because at least a few of them (with a bit of growing and refining) will be able to compete with the “landed aristocracy” of timepiece names, mostly in Switzerland, in due time. It is for this reason that watch lovers circa 2020 are having a love affair with the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.
In the beginning (or perhaps forever), the Zelos Mirage Tourbillon watches will be part of a limited-edition set. This natural titanium version of the watch (with PVD main plates) will be produced as a limited edition of just two pieces. Among the four different Mirage Tourbillon models, Zelos is producing only 10 pieces. The brand positions them as halo products to help round out its growing range of mostly sport-style watches.
The last few years in tourbillon news have been typified by headlines that focus on new levels of affordability, as well as quality. In 2016, TAG Heuer released its Carrera Heuer 02-T Tourbillon Chronograph for around $20,000, and Horage currently has its own lovely Swiss Made tourbillon for under $8,000. Depending on the version, the Zelos Mirage Tourbillon costs between $11,000 and $12,000 and very certainly feels like a good value. That is especially true when comparing other watches that have the same or similar movement as is in the Mirage Tourbillon.
To outfit the Mirage Tourbillon with movements, Zelos worked with Swiss La Joux-Perret, the company that produces Arnold & Son and Angelus watches. La Joux-Perret is actually owned by parent company Citizen Group out of Japan. I believe this was a crucial reason the company supplied tourbillon movements to a non-Swiss company in the first place. I can’t know for sure, but I do know that some incumbent protectionists in the Swiss watch industry want to keep their most esteemed artisanship and technique to be used for home-grown brands. As the global economy for wristwatches continues to be a challenge, I think we will see more and more lessening of this traditional protectionist approach to who Switzerland-based suppliers will sell to.
The last time I reviewed a watch with this same movement architecture was in the Angelus U51 diver Tourbillon (on aBlogtoWatch here). That watch was a bit fancier and the movement was done differently, but it also cost around $20,000 USD more. That is a big difference. Now, watch fans can enjoy the beauty and grace of a La Joux-Perret flying tourbillon but in a more humble and elegant package that is priced to move for today’s zealous fans of high-end horology. The movement itself is the La Joux-Perret caliber LJP 7814 and is manually wound with 60 hours of power reserve operating at 4Hz (28,800 bph). Unlike entirely machined movements, the LJP tourbillon does come with sufficient volumes of hand-polishing.
Aesthetically, you can view the movement through the dial, and on this version, the main plate has been coated in a dark gray color using PVD. It makes for a really attractive look under the transparent dial, which is where the hour markers are placed. The watch itself has a slick modern design but is sized to wear like a demure dress watch. In a sense, it is a casual dress watch when compared to Zelos’ big collection of sports watches.
The cases themselves are part of the Mirage Tourbillon selling point. This natural titanium version is the least visually “exciting” but is good for conservative wearers. Compare it to three other versions of the Mirage Tourbillon that use “Timascus,” which is titanium Damascus-style metal. That it uses folds of metal for a wood grain look is very uncommon for titanium. On top of that, the titanium folded together is slightly different from when exposed to heat. That gives some versions of the Mirage Tourbillon case beautiful colors like violet and blue. Zelos also has a Mokume Gane version of the Mirage Tourbillon with a Damascus-style case produced from copper and nickel metal that will patina over time. The creativity and artistry applied to the case work here is very special, indeed.
Dimension-wise, the Mirage Tourbillon case is 41mm-wide with a 45mm lug-t0-lug distance. It also wears small due to the narrowness of the dial compared with the broadness of the case. The case is also just 9.5mm-thick  (without the top “box-style” sapphire crystal) and has a water resistance rating of 50 meters. Zelos includes a very elaborate presentation set that includes an oversized wood box and a leather carrying case that allows you to carry a set of watches and also include a few additional strap options to mix up the look.
Zelos knows what watch lovers today want because Zelos founder Elshan Tang is a watch lover himself. That explains how the Mirage Tourbillon feels both trendy and approachable but also novel and fresh at the same time. Zelos is not becoming a “tourbillon brand,” but it was wise to show what it could do in a halo product using a desirable Swiss Made tourbillon and its particular flavor or flair and horological decor. I’m personally very proud of the fact that aBlogtoWatch has been instrumental in helping brands like Zelos get the exposure they need in order to reach passionate consumers to help the brand grow up and produce beautiful stuff like this. Price for the Zelos Mirage Tourbillon as pictures is $10,900 USD (with prices at $11,900 USD for the more elaborate case styles). Learn more or order at the Zelos website here.

Angelus Watches prepared for Baselworld 2019 new versions of the Angelus U50 and Angelus U51. Until the reviews will be published, please have a look at the official press releases below.
Angelus reaches new chronometry achievement with U51 Diver Tourbillon 5-day power reserve
Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon
Angelus keeps with its tradition of utilizing technologically forward materials to manufacture highly complicated and aesthetically interesting timepieces. The House stretches the limit of its famous diving tourbillon movement, adding a 5-day power reserve to its list of features.
While meeting the required diver’s watch criteria, the U51 Diver Tourbillon comes with high technical features. In fact, the A-310 calibre is dedicated to efficiency, with a silicon lever escapement and with all bridges as plates made of titanium. Furthermore, Angelus’ engineers and watchmakers pushed the boundaries with a remarkable 5-day power reserve while keeping the 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) frequency, ensuring a high precision. Finally, the tourbillon cage is set on a ball bearing instead of pivots to gain in stability.
Even though the U51 Diver Tourbillon is intended as a high-performance sporty timepiece, the skeletonised movement has been carefully decorated with sandblasted finishing, enhancing the natural colour variations of the titanium.
Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon
The 45 mm titanium case features two large screw-down crowns. The two-position crown at 4 o’clock is used for winding and setting the time, while the crown at 2 o’clock is used to rotate the unidirectional 60-minute rotating bezel. Opposite, at the 9 o’clock position, a helium escape valve is placed to ensure the watch’s water resistance of 300 meters (1,000 feet), even during saturation diving so the helium molecules could not make their way into the case under pressure.
Careful attention has been given to the aesthetic of the U51 Diver Tourbillon. The 45 mm case is masterfully manufactured with a subtle interplay between sandblasted, brushed and polished surfaces, which takes full advantage of the titanium’s unique colours properties. The bezel of the case as the chapter ring are carved, recalling waves. The open display appeals with a contrasting chapter ring of stormy blue and striking orange colours. The hands, indexes and Arabic numerals are all filled with Super-Luminova for optimal readability.
The U51 Diver Tourbillon comes on a matching blue rubber strap embossed with an Angelus logo and a titanium folding buckle.

Into the deep, dark infinite with Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition
Angelus U50 Black edition
After entering the scene as a diver’s watch like no other, the Angelus U50 Diver Tourbillon returns in a bold black limited edition.
The U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition stands out with its uniquely structured manufacture skeleton movement and dark tones. While conceived with all the properties sought in a diver’s watch, the U50 Diver Tourbillon is high-performance timepiece. With its stealthy black silhouette, this limited edition blends into any situation.
Crafted in a 46mm-wide lightweight yet robust titanium case with a black DLC treatment all over, the U50 Diver Tourbillon features two large screw-down crowns.
Angelus U50 Black edition
Instead of a solid dial, the U50 Diver Tourbillon features an open face with a dark but legible hours’ ring in grey, as well as white Super-Luminova on the indexes. Matching the dial, the hours, minutes and seconds’ hands are black plated and filled with Super-Luminova. Both face and case back crystals are made of antireflective sapphire.
The result of years of intensive R&D by Angelus’ engineers and watchmakers, the U50 Diver Tourbillon’s A-300 mechanical hand-wound caliber is designed as a skeleton from the ground up rather than simply being a cut-out version of an existing movement.
Angelus U50 Black edition
Much reduced in weight, it has maximum rigidity from its beam-type bridges and the fact that all the movement’s main elements, such as the wheels and barrel, are firmly secured between two plates. This design replaces the conventional main plate and bridges construction and massively increases the mechanical resistance of the movement. The watch’s rigidity is further enhanced by the Angelus in-house six-spoke design, which reinforces the wheel train and protects the skeletonized ratchet and barrel. Finally, the movement is entirely manufactured in-house.
With its core functions – hours, minutes, small seconds – the A-300 caliber has a 55-hour power reserve. The 4 Hz / 28,800 vph frequency is a guarantee for precision. Even though the caliber is intended as a high-performance, it has painstakingly executed with snailed black DLC coating and chamfered edges, matching the blacked-out allure of the U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition.
The U50 Diver Tourbillon Black Edition comes on a black rubber strap bearing the Angelus logo, with a Bback DLC titanium pin buckle, completing the look of this 25-piece limited edition diver’s watch.
