Meta Exposes Eight Firms Behind Spyware Attacks on iOS, Android, and Windows Devices
Meta Platformsâ Actions Against Surveillance-for-Hire Companies
Meta Platforms has taken action against eight surveillance-for-hire companies based in Italy, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), as per their Adversarial Threat Report for Q4 2023. The companies were reportedly involved in malicious activities, including the development of spyware aimed at iOS, Android, and Windows devices.
The malware developed by these companies had the ability to gather and access a wide range of device data, including information about the device itself, location data, photos, media, contacts, calendar entries, emails, SMS, and data from social media and messaging apps. The malware could also activate device microphones, cameras, and screenshot functions.
The companies implicated in these activities are Cy4Gate/ELT Group, RCS Labs, IPS Intelligence, Variston IT, TrueL IT, Protect Electronic Systems, Negg Group, and Mollitiam Industries. According to Meta Platforms, these companies also engaged in data scraping, social engineering, and phishing activities across a variety of platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Skype, GitHub, Reddit, Google, LinkedIn, Quora, Tumblr, VK, Flickr, TikTok, SnapChat, Gettr, Viber, Twitch, and Telegram.
 Specific Malicious Activities
RCS Labs, owned by Cy4Gate, reportedly used a network of fake personas to trick users into providing their phone numbers and email addresses, and to click on fraudulent links for reconnaissance purposes. Facebook and Instagram accounts linked to Spanish spyware company Variston IT were used for exploit development and testing, including the sharing of malicious links. Reports suggest that Variston IT is in the process of shutting down its operations.
Meta Platforms also identified accounts used by Negg Group for testing spyware delivery, and by Mollitiam Industries, a Spanish company offering data collection services and spyware for Windows, macOS, and Android, for scraping public information.
Actions Against Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB)
Alongside these actions, Meta Platforms also removed over 2,000 accounts, Pages, and Groups from Facebook and Instagram due to Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB) originating from China, Myanmar, and Ukraine. The Chinese cluster targeted U.S. audiences with content criticizing U.S. foreign policy towards Taiwan and Israel and supporting Ukraine. The Myanmar network targeted local residents with articles praising the Burmese army and criticizing ethnic armed organizations and minority groups. The Ukrainian cluster used fake Pages and Groups to post content supporting Ukrainian politician Viktor Razvadovskyi and expressing support for the current government and criticism of the opposition in Kazakhstan.
Industry-wide Efforts to Curb Spyware Abuse
This action by Meta Platforms comes as part of a broader initiative involving a coalition of government and tech companies aiming to curb the abuse of commercial spyware for human rights abuses. As part of its countermeasures, Meta Platforms has introduced new features such as Control Flow Integrity (CFI) on Messenger for Android and VoIP memory isolation for WhatsApp to make exploitation more difficult and reduce the overall attack surface.
The Persistence of the Surveillance Industry
Despite these efforts, the surveillance industry continues to evolve and thrive in various forms. Last month, 404 Media, building on prior research from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) in November 2023, revealed a surveillance tool called Patternz. This tool utilizes real-time bidding (RTB) advertising data from popular apps like 9gag, Truecaller, and Kik to track mobile devices. The Israeli company behind Patternz, ISA, claims that the tool allows national security agencies to use real-time and historical user advertising data to detect, monitor, and predict user actions, security threats, and anomalies based on user behavior, location patterns, and mobile usage characteristics.
In addition, last week, Enea unveiled a previously unknown mobile network attack known as MMS Fingerprint.
The Use of Pegasus-maker NSO Groupâs Alleged Techniques
According to some sources, the Pegasus-maker NSO Group is believed to have employed specific techniques, as stated in a contract they had with Ghanaâs telecom regulator in 2015. The exact means used by the group are still somewhat unclear. However, Enea, a Swedish telecom security firm, has put forward a plausible theory.
The Role of Binary SMS in the Suspected Method
Enea suggests that the group likely used a unique form of SMS message known as binary SMS, specifically MM1_notification.REQ. This particular message informs the recipientâs device of an MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) that is pending retrieval from the MMSC (Multimedia Messaging Service Center).
 The Process of Fetching MMS
The process of fetching the MMS involves the utilization of MM1_retrieve.REQ and MM1_retrieve.RES. The former is an HTTP GET request directed to the URL address contained in the MM1_notification.REQ message.
The Significance of User Device Information
What makes this technique particularly interesting is the inclusion of user device information such as User-Agent (distinct from a web browser User-Agent string) and x-wap-profile in the GET request. This data essentially serves as a unique identifier for the device.
 Understanding User-Agent and X-wap-profile
Enea explains that the User-Agent in this context is a string that typically identifies the deviceâs OS and model. The x-wap-profile, on the other hand, points to a User Agent Profile (UAProf) file that outlines the capabilities of a mobile handset.
 Potential Exploitation of Device Information
This device information could potentially be used by a threat actor to deploy spyware. They could exploit specific vulnerabilities, customize their harmful payloads to suit the target device, or even design more efficient phishing campaigns. However, itâs important to note that there is currently no evidence to suggest this security loophole has been exploited in recent times.

Valyrian Translator
So what if you do actually want to learn Dothraki or Valyrian? Of course, the ideal scenario would be to have an actual language exchange with a Dothraki warrior or a nobleman from Essos for Valyrian. High Valyrian is the language of the old Valyrian Freehold which was located on the eastern continent of Essos. Much of Essos was once dominated by the Valyrians for thousands of years, stretching from the Free Cities in the west, to Slaver's Bay in the east. The Valyrians forced the peoples they subjugated to speak in (or at least be able to converse in) their language. After the Doom of.
From A Wiki of Ice and Fire
Jump to: navigation, search
High Valyrian is a language originating from Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold. Corrupted dialects known as bastard Valyrian are spoken in the Free Cities(1) and Slaver's Bay.(2)
2High Valyrian
3Bastard Valyrian
History
Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)
High Valyrian is no longer widely spoken due to the Doom of Valyria,(5) and most Valyrian records were destroyed in the catastrophe.(6) The tongues of the Free Cities have continued to evolve from the original High Valyrian.(5)
Queen Alysanne Targaryen is said to have begun learning how to read from Valyrian scrolls while still at the breast of her mother, Queen Alyssa Velaryon.(7) Alysanne's husband, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, was fascinated with the Old Valyrian scrolls in the library of Dragonstone.(8)
How to lead jo owen ebook reader. Racallio Ryndoon is said to have spoken a dozen dialects of Valyrian.(9) Lord Alyn Velaryon studied Valyrian treaties about warship design and sea tactics when he visited the Citadel.(9)Larra Rogare, the wife of Prince Viserys Targaryen, was fluent in High Valyrian and the dialects of Lys, Myr, Tyrosh, and Volantis.(10)
Some highborn children of Westeros are still taught Valyrian as a sign of their noble education.(11)(12) Songs(13) and scrolls(14)(15) are still sung and read in High Valyrian, although by 300 AC most Westerosi nobles cannot understand the language.(13)
High Valyrian
Language
The High Valyrian phrase valar morghulisâ(16) is translated as 'all men must die.'(17) A counterpart phrase, valar dohaeris,(18) is translated as 'all men must serve.'(19)
The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)
The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)
Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)
Names
House Targaryen came from Valyria and thus most of its members can be considered to have High Valyrian names. These include:
Aegon
Aelor
Aelora
Aelyx
Aemon
Aemond
Aenar
Aenys

Houses Baratheon, Celtigar, Qoherys, and Velaryon are of Valyrian descent, and thus these names are possibly Valyrian as well.(34)(35)
Velaryon first names include:
Aethan
Corlys
Daenaera
Jacaerys
Laena
Laenor
Lucerys
Monterys
Vaemond
Valaena
Jaenara Belaerys was a Valyrian explorer(36) and Aurion was a would-be emperor.(37)
The Valyrians most likely gave Valyrian names to their dragons, as the dragons Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar, and Syrax were named after Valyrian gods and goddesses.(38)(39) However, not all dragons of House Targaryen had Valyrian names (e.g., Queen Alysanne Targaryen's dragon, Silverwing(31)).
Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:
Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)
Bastard Valyrian
Free Cities
Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)
The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)
Slaver Cities
Valyrian Translations Season 4
The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)
Valyrian Voice Translator
Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)
Some slavers speak a mongrel tongue,(46) a blend of Old Ghiscari and High Valyrian.(47)
Characters familiar with High Valyrian
Valyrian Translation
Gerris Drinkwater speaks a halting approximation of High Valyrian.(12)
Haldon Halfmaester(48)
Tyrion Lannister learned to read High Valyrian on his maester's knee.(11)

Septa Saranella tells Cersei Lannister the meaning of valonqar.(22)

Quotes
Each of the Free Cities has its own history and character, and each has come to have its own tongue. These are all corruptions of the original, pure form of High Valyrian, dialects that drift further from their origin with each new century since the Doom befell the Freehold.(5)Download counter strike condition zero full.
Behind the Scenes
According to George R. R. Martin,
Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)
David J. Peterson further developed High Valyrian for the television adaptation Game of Thrones.

The course fuelled further, his real ambition, and that has always been to serve humanity. Some of the top designers work at TBL TECH NERDS, and they use top database technologies like MongodB, CosmosDB, though according to the requirements. They still use MSSQL and MYSQL for majority of website development projects for small and mid cap requirements. Its only if the client, and if only if they have the big ambition thatâs always is the case, but not all requires big db, they go for Mongodb and CosmosDB. However, seeing the World requirement changing fast, their analysts now always recommend to all clients, make use of NoSql dbs more now. That makes their app a leading and special Denver app brand.

Week 6 roundup: GPDR shooting a record fine, a Zoom zero day, Logitech wireless injection, and bypassing denied permissions (also some fallout from the Assistance and Access legislation)
Welcome to the fourth edition of my roundup blog posts. New malware strains seemed to be the flavour of this week so I tried to include new on other security happenings. There was some news on the Assistance and Access legislation that passed parliament last year. Sorry for the /r/titlegore.
British Airways set to be fined $329m for 2018 data breach under the EUâs GDPR rules, with four weeks to appeal the fine
British Airways (BA) is facing a ÂŁ183m ($329 AUD) fine under GDPR rules for a data breach last year.
BA is the first company to be fined under the new rules, which came into effect last year. The new rules fine companies for failing to protect consumer data. The maximum penalty is 4% of turnover, with BAâs fine representing 1.5% of its 2017 turnover. Previously, the old laws allowed for the largest fine ÂŁ500k ($898k AUD), which was given to Facebook for its role in the Cambridge Analytica incident last year.
The breach was disclosed in September 2018. It involved redirecting customers visiting the BA website between April and June 2018 from the BA website to a fraudulent site. There, customers had their personal details collected. Around 500,000 customers had their logins, payment information, booking details, names and addresses collected in the breach. The collection of information was believed to have began in June 2018.
The Information Commisonerâs Office (ICO) issued the fine to BA. ICO have given BA 28 days to appeal the fine. BA intends to appeal the fine fully, saying âwe intend to take all appropriate steps to defend the airline's position vigorously, including making any necessary appealsâ.

Zero day vulnerability with Zoom application allowed users to be forcibly joined into calls without their consent
The macOS conference call application Zoom has a zero day vulnerability. The vulnerability can forcibly join users to a malicious actorâs own Zoom call, and users joined can have their video enabled by default without the application ever asking the user for consent. I wrote a separate blog post about this in more detail.

Vulnerability with Logitech wireless USB dongles means their connections could be hijacked
A vulnerability with Logitech wireless USB dongles (receivers) has been discovered by a security researcher. The dongles are used by Logitech wireless mice, keyboards and presentation clickers. Dongles using Logitechâs proprietary âUnifyingâ technology, which uses 2.4GHz radiowaves to communicate with the wireless device, are affected by the vulnerability.
The vulnerability was discovered by Marcus Mengs. It allows attackers to log the userâs keystrokes sent from the wireless device to the connected computer. Furthermore, attackers are also able to inject their own keystrokes to the connected computer. This meant the attacker could take over a computer connected to the Logitech dongle without needing to access the wireless mouse, keyboard or presentation clicker that the dongle was connected to.
Some Logitech dongles have a âkey blacklistâ system that is supposed to prevent the injection of keystrokes. The vulnerability can bypass this prevention system entirely. If encryption was used to encrypt the connection between the wireless device and the connected dongle, the vulnerability could also allow attackers to obtain the encryption key.
Logitech was notified about the vulnerability by Mengs. Logitech plan to fix some of the issues, but not all.

Study reveals how Android apps can bypass OS-level permission restrictions

Android Marshmallow introducted granular runtime app permissions replaced the previous system of blanket award all permissions to apps that requested them. Users can deny apps any permissions they do not want to grant. However, apps have workaround ways to access data they do not have permission to access. I wrote a separate blog post about this in more detail.

In other news
Canonical Ltd, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distro has its GitHub account compromised. Ubuntu Security tweeted about the incident, saying the accountâs credentials were compromised and the account was used to create repos and issues. The source code for Ubuntu was left untouched by the breach.
Amazon says Australiaâs anti-encryption laws are âtechnically flawedâ. In a submitted review of the Assistance and Access legislation that passed parliament late last year, Amazon warned the laws could âreduce consumer trust in technologyâ.
Security backdoor discovered in a Ruby library that checks for password strength. The backdoor involved checking if the library was being used in a testing or production environment. When in production mode, it would download and run a second payload creating the backdoor in apps and sites that used the library. The backdoored library was downloaded 547 times.
Phishing emails impersonating eFax are distributing trojans. One of the trojans being spread is Dridex which steals bank credentials through browser sessions and has been able to avoid antivirus detection.
Australian encryption laws developed and passed parliament despite little consultation with Australian technology companies. Documents obtained under Freedom of Information reveal how the Department of Home Affairs did not consult Australian technology companies about the Assistance and Access legislation which passed parliament late last year.
Update to Firefox means HTTPS is required before a site or service is allowed to access a deviceâs microphone and camera. Starting from Firefox 68, the browser will only expose a deviceâs microphone and camera in secure contexts.
Security researcher says Australian anti-encryption laws are being used to undermine the freedom of the press. This comes after two police raids on a News Corp journalist and the ABCâs Sydney offices that occurred within days of each other last month.
Malware pushes unwanted advertising to 25m Android devices. The malware known as Agent Smith replaces legitimate apps with infected clones that are used to display ads. The vulnerability that the malware leverages was fixed in December Android security patch of 2017.
Spying tool can spy on users using encrypting messaging services on iOS and Android. The tool known as FinSpy can collect information on usersâ contacts, messages, emails, calendars, GPS information, photos, files on internal storage and call data.

Unriddled: More Controversy for Facebook, Fines for Google, and More Tech News You Need
Welcome, one and all, to another Wednesday: the day that marks the halfway point -- almost -- to the weekend.
Here in our Cambridge HQ, the days are slowly starting to get shorter. So as we hold onto to these summer days and nights -- and know that, perhaps, you are, too -- we'll try to unriddle this week's tech news in double-time.
It's our Wednesday tech news roundup, and we're breaking it down.
Unriddled: The Tech News You Need
1. A Busy Week for Facebook
Facebook's name has been in the news quite a bit over the past few days, from controversial interviews from its CEO, to new controversies around its content moderation practices.
Facebook in China
Facebook -- particularly its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg -- has made no secret of its wishes to have a presence in China. And while the site and most of its related apps are still prohibited there, the company created a Chinese subsidiary, Facebook Technology (Hang Zhou) Ltd., earlier in July.
A spokesperson for Facebook said the company's presence in China will be an âinnovation hubâ in Zhejiang, where "efforts would be focused on training and workshops that help these developers and entrepreneurs to innovate and grow." Gerrit De Vynck of Bloomberg has more. Read full story >>
Zuckerberg Speaks -- Then Backpedals
Last week, Zuckerberg sat down with Kara Swisher for an interview on Recode Decode. And while 90 minutes wasn't enough to cover everything, Swisher did ask about topics ranging from the spread of disinformation on the platform to content moderation policies (e.g., why some Pages still haven't been removed).
After the interview was made public, Zuckerberg went on to say that some of his comments about those who "get things wrong, even multiple times" -- such as the "set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened" -- were misinterpreted as being made in defense of that very set of people. Read full interview >>
Speaking of Content Moderation
During last week's Congressional testimony on the "filtering practices" of social media networks, Facebook VP of Global Policy Management Monika Bickert seemed to struggle to define what the platform constitutes as "fake news" -- and address questions on how content is moderated on the site.Â
While Bickert did allude to the company's fact-checking practices and the "threshold" used to determine how Pages and Groups are penalized, answers to certain questions on why certain "repeat offender" publishers were still allowed to post on the network led mostly to more confusion.
That was followed by a Channel 4 undercover report that content moderators are sometimes instructed to take a "hands-off" approach to "flagged and reported content like graphic violence, hate speech, and racist and other bigoted rhetoric from far-right groups."
Since then, however, Motherboard obtained leaked internal documents on when to ban Pages or Groups for content in violation of Facebook's community standards, like hate speech. The problem: There is no unified view of what constitutes hate speech. Read full story >>
What Facebook Says It's Working On
Meanwhile, Facebook says it will continue its efforts to stop the spread of misinformation on its site and its many portfolio apps -- including WhatsApp, where the company says it will limit the ability to forward messages in hopes of spreading such false news as that which prompted serious violence in India and Myanmar. Read full story >>
Similar policies and practices are coming to the core Facebook platform itself, where The New York Times reports the company will start removing what product manager Tessa Lyons says is a specific "type of misinformation that is shared in certain countries that can incite underlying tensions and lead to physical harm offline." Read full story >>
2. Fines for Google
The European Union will fine Google âŹ4.3B -- roughly $5 billion -- in an antitrust case that the European Commission has based on alleged abuses by the company for "Android market dominance." These include the Google's forced inclusion (e.g., for phone manufacturers) of its own search engine and apps like the Chrome browser into the Android operating system -- which Google has 90 days to stop doing.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai later released a statement defending the company's practices around its operating system, saying that it "has expanded the choice of phones available around the world."Â Read full story >>
3. Scooters Are Absent From the Streets of San Francisco
Following the passage of San Francisco city laws (effective June 4) that bars scooter companies from operating without a permit, applications from 12 companies seeking to provide these services (including Uber, Lime, and Bird) are still under review by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).
While the goal was originally to approve five companies by July, Megan Rose Dickey of TechCrunch says that this prolonged review process indicates that scooter operations may not resume before August. Read full story >>
4. Lyft Steps Up Its Background Checks
Last week, we reported that Uber is reinforcing its efforts around safety, and Axios stated that it will conduct ongoing background checks on drivers, rather than performing them on a one-time occasion.
Now, it appears that one the company's chief rivals, Lyft, is following in its footsteps, and exploring how to strengthen its background checks after revelations that a driver with a serial violent criminal record managed to bypass the system. The news comes among revelations of a St. Louis Uber driver publishing videos of passengers online -- who had no idea they were being filmed. Carolyn Said of the San Francisco Chronicle has more. Read full story >>
5. Presenting: the Data Transfer Project
Late last week, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter announced a joint effort on the Data Transfer Project:Â a new "standards initiative" that's meant to make it easier for users to move their personal data between platforms.Â
The ability for users to seamlessly take their personal data from, for instance, Facebook -- which calls the project a "commit[ment] to building a common way for people to transfer data into and out of online services"-- has been scrutinized by many, including those who point out that the company owns most of the companies its own CEO identifies as competitors. Russell Brandom of The Verge has more. Read full story >>
6. 47% of Social Media Users Report Seeing More Spam in Their Feeds
Even as networks fight the spread of spam and misinformation, our research shows that nearly half of social media users report seeing more of it. The findings raise the question: While social networks have made no secret of their efforts to fight the spread of spam on their sites, how have these efforts been paying off -- and are users noticing them? Read full story >>
Thatâs all for today. Until next week, feel free to weigh in on Twitter to ask us your tech news questions, or to let us know what kind of events and topics you'd like us to cover.
