Vinny DePonto – Mindplay at Greenwich House Theater. Photo credit: Jeff Lorch. The Off-Broadway Theatre Review: MindPlay By Ross Recorded thoughts spin out, filling the Greenwich House Theater with their clarity and emotion, overlapping and replaying in a chaotic jumble. 268 Directors and the end of the blog
This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years.
This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices.
It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name.
I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning.
I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.

Working in the Theatre: Under Construction - Polyphone from American Theatre Wing on Vimeo.
Exploring and performing emerging musicals is crucial to the process of creating new work. Such is the case with the students, alumni, and participants of The Polyphone Festival at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia who are blurring the line between workshop and production. Watch as Jonathan Larson Grant recipient, educator, and composer/lyricist César Alvarez and his colleagues work with their students in preparing songs and story ultimately arriving at the presentation of this amazing festival. This past year’s festival included the work of these incredible artists:
Folk Wandering (Conceived by Jaclyn Backhaus and Andrew Neisler, Book and Lyrics by Jaclyn Backhaus, Music and Additional Lyrics by Blake Allen, Mike Brun, Andrew R. Butler, Joel Esher, Alex Fast, Jo Lampert, and Annie Tippe, Arrangements by Mike Brun and Joel Esher, Orchestrations by Mike Brun, Additional Orchestrations by Blake Allen, Directed by Andrew Neisler)
Normativity (Book, Music and Lyrics by Jaime Jarrett, Director: Rebecca Wright Music Directors: Jaime Jarrett and Ellen Winter Choreographer: Eppchez)

A Theasy Interview with Pipeline Theatre Company
9/28/15
Pipeline has been a thriving downtown theater company for the past several years, and their latest production is The Gray Man. We chatted with artistic director Ariana Schrier to learn more about this production and what’s in store for this active artistic cohort. Find more about them (and get tickets to The Gray Man) at pipelinetheatre.org. The Gray Man plays at Walkerspace, 46 Walker Street, September 24-October 18.
THEASY: How did Pipeline come to be? Who's in charge?
ARIANA SCHRIER: Pipeline was formed in 2009 when all of us original members were students at the Atlantic Theater Company Acting School. There were about 20 of us at the time. As part of the third year of their program, students are tasked with forming a theater company. Atlantic provided us with a mentor (then Artistic Director of the Atlantic Stage 2, Geoff Berman, who now sits on our advisory board) who walked us through the steps of forming a leadership structure, writing bylaws, and eventually selecting and producing our first play. We elected Daniel Johnsen as our Founding Artistic Director and chose the name Pipeline because we hoped to become something of a conduit for new voices. Our very first production was Timberlake Wertenbaker's Love of the Nightingale and we had such a blast that we decided to keep going. Three years later, the company had been growing at a steady rate and we decided it was time to really dig our heels in. At around this time, we re-dedicated ourselves to our particular brand of theater we call "serious make believe," received our nonprofit status, and, after Daniel stepped back from his leadership role to focus on acting and directing, I was elected Artistic Director. There are now 22 members of the Pipeline ensemble and we're about to produce the first show of our seventh season, The Gray Man by Andrew Farmer and directed by Andrew Neisler.
THEASY: What's your mission? What kind of theatre do you like to make?
AS: We believe that an unbridled imagination is a force of magic with the power to provoke a more courageous and compassionate world. Our aim is to provide our artists with a home where they feel challenged and supported to go as big as they can dream. Toward that end, we select original material to produce that holds within it the opportunity to build very big worlds, but worlds that are grounded by emotionally real characters. We feel this type of work gives all of our artists the greatest opportunity to go big, and gives our audiences the greatest opportunity to get fully lost in the plays we create. Looking over our recent production history, I think this through line is clear: Giant Killer Slugs was a creature feature for the stage; Clown Bar was written in the style of a film noir, except all of the characters were clowns; BYUIOO was a folk gospel opera in a totally made up language; and now The Gray Man is a re-interpretation of the original boogeyman story, set to an original score.
THEASY: Tell us about The Gray Man. What's the show about and why should audiences check it out?
AS: The Gray Man is Andrew Farmer's haunting, beautiful, and delicate re-interpretation of the original boogeyman story. It's set in the early 1900s in Tenement-era New York City. I don't want to tell you too much about it, other than it really provides us with the opportunity to create a lot of magic with light and sound. This is definitely a play our audiences will feel lost in, perhaps more lost than ever before. We have an incredible composer and musical director team in Mike Brun and Chris Ryan, and, though this is not a musical, they've underscored the entire play, taking into use all parts of the piano (knocking on the wood, scratching on the strings). It's also directed by Andrew Neisler, who previously directed both Clown Bar and BYUIOO with us, and he really has a special way, in really everything he directs, of building these fully realized little universes with his plays. Seeing this show is going to be a fully sensory experience.
THEASY: What are you most excited about with this production?
AS: I think we're all most excited about taking our audience on this very different kind of journey from what we've done before. Coming off of Clown Bar our audience is really used to us coming at them with big, fun, crazy. This show is big, this show is crazy, and in certain ways it's definitely fun, but more than anything it's going to haunt and chill. But this isn't scary for the sake of scary, this play explores loneliness and grief, it questions who we can trust and if we can even trust ourselves. It provokes fear, but it does it with purpose and it tells a story I think we can all relate to.
THEASY: What's next for Pipeline?
AS: After The Gray Man the rest of Pipeline's seventh season will be dedicated to our PlayLab Class of 2016. We'll be announcing the 8 participants in our new class later this week. Throughout the course of the year, each playwright will develop a one-act play and a full-length play. The one-acts will be fully produced and presented to the public this January in our "Matchstick Series," and the full-lengths will be presented to this public in July in our "Bonfire Series." We also have a one night only "Big Mystery Show" coming up in May...but that's all we can say about it. It's a mystery!
