#And then keep lava lamp as a back up like he did Sakura

Of course Lava Lamp’s thoughts immediately return to the moment that caused this. How he thinks this is his fault. How he wishes he hadn’t hesitated.
How there’s literally nothing they’ve been able to figure out in seven years but now he has SECONDS to figure this out or Sakura really is dead forever.
How the only option he can even think of is reversing time itself - but how incredibly out of reach is even the thought of that? If Nadeshiko can only JUST manage to stop time, and she’s stronger than anyone else in Clow at the moment, what hopes does he have of pulling this off? In a few seconds? With no notice?
I suppose the only option would be to call Yuuko, but could he do that? I think he would have tried that before now if he was able to. Could he call her in seconds? What would the PRICE be to turn back time that far? If Nadeshiko is dying to even PAUSE time briefly, actually turning back the clock seven years?!?!
More than anyone could conceivably imagine surely.
OH
OH YOU FUCK
THIS WAS ALL A TRAP
THIS WAS A TRAP FROM MOMENT ONE
DID HE NOT EVEN REALLY INTEND TO KILL SAKURA? DID HE JUST SET THE TRAP SINCE HE KNEW LAVA LAMP WAS THERE, AND SLOWLY DROVE HIM INTO DESPERATION KNOWING THAT BY THE TIME IT KILLED SAKURA HE’D BE READY TO TRADE LITERALLY ANYTHING TO EVIL WOLVERINE?
This is how he gets Lava Lamp into the lava lamp then?
Also it’s sad to see that the same trick that Yuuko used earlier (being in a slightly different dimension to not trigger Fai’s curse) must be what Evil Wolverine is using to get around the Time Stop. He’s technically not even in Clow, so he can still reach in and communicate with Lava Lamp even while time is frozen.
OH I HATE THIS MAN.
And yet OH THE SMALL TOUCH BETWEEN FAI AND LAVA LAMP EARLIER, BECAUSE FAI WAS THE CLOSEST ONE TO UNDERSTANDING HIM
IN REALITY HE REALLY WAS EXACTLY THE SAME
EVIL WOLVERINE PORTALLED IN INFRONT OF BOTH OF THEM, MURDERED THEIR MOST TREASURED LOVED ONE, AND THEN ASKED THEM BOTH TO SELL THEMSELVES TO REVERSE IT.
I suppose the only difference was that Nadeshiko was here to freeze time, which is probably the only reason why Sakura didn’t actually straight up die here. And I suppose you could go either way on if this was intentional - if Evil Wolverine didn’t really care either way, or if he set this up specifically for a moment where he knew Nadeshiko would be watching and ready. That’s a pretty huge gamble if so, but we’ve seen his plans go drastically wrong often enough that maybe he was willing to bet Sakura's life on getting this moment to play out right.
WILD.
And that’s the last page?
That’s the last page!
HEY I HATE THIS MAN

// again, a HUGE thank you to all of you! y’all make me happy.

Sakura wasn’t exactly too sure how she lucked out that night. She remained on her side of the couch, with her pen in her hand as she finished her notes. Sasuke seemed to have zoned out, but Sakura could feel the tension in the air between the two of them.
Her hand burned from where his lips had touched, and as she fought off the feeling to glance over at him, it wasn’t enough.
“Have you had a lot of girlfriends?” She asked quietly, her hand still covering her face while she continued to write.
Sasuke clicked his tongue before exhaling, “only one. It didn’t work out, lasted a month. I was still in college.” His monotone voice rang out.
Now that Sakura had uncovered her face, her viridian eyes watched him glance back over at her. She could already feel her cheeks tint over pink, and her skin numb up while her heart clenched in her chest. His smoldering, black eyes remained on her, thick lashes blinking before he asked his own question.
“Why don’t you have a boyfriend?”
“I--uh,” Sakura started, her mind frantically racing for an answer, “I’ve never had time for one, I guess.”
“Interesting.” He responded with cool voice. “Okay then. I take it you’ve never kissed anyone, have you?”
Sakura felt her legs tense up and the muscles in her arms tighten. Her fingers curled around the pen in her hand and teeth gritted against one another. Sasuke’s eyes stared right through her, his overwhelming presence making itself clear once again.
“No,” she answered honestly, but with the lack of confidence in her voice, she felt like a silly child.
His response was as expected. Sasuke smirked, his eyes lighting up with something Sakura had never seen before and as much as she wanted to look away from him, she couldn’t tear her eyes from his. He looked absolutely handsome in the minimal light offered from the lamp, and the way his high cheekbones and strong jawline tensed from his smirk, stirred up the butterflies from within Sakura’s stomach.
Her heart beat echoed in her ears, while her throat became tight with anticipation. She felt her fingers shaking under his stare now, but before Sakura could regain her composure, she was setting her books aside and making her way towards Sasuke now. He didn’t move under her gaze, only waited for her to approach him.
“Is it weird, Sasuke?” She breathed out before coming to sit on her knees beside him. He was still lounged back, one arm on the armrest, the other resting on the back of the couch. “Kissing?”
He raised an eyebrow before straightening his posture and coming to sit up. “Not if it’s with the right person,” he answered quietly. Sakura was perched next to him now, his form sitting right in front of her with his eyes focused on her and only her.
She wanted to reach her hand forward and brush his locks of obsidian tresses from his face, tuck the longer pieces behind his ear and feel his skin clash with hers; only she didn’t move, she only stared into his eyes, begging him to move closer, begging him to teach her something other than literature.
Sakura had watched many chick flicks, the iconic ones when they meet a man, hook up, start dating, break up, but then end the movie with forgiveness and a strong lip-locking session. She would always feel her heart rate increase while her stomach would juggle the butterflies that fluttered lightly inside. She never thought that she would feel this anxious, gut wrenching, time frozen experience, though.
His scent lured her in, begged her to come closer, and the more she found her body moving closer to his, his left hand came to rest on her tricep. He wasn’t entirely stopping her, but he also wasn’t letting her advance.
She could see the desire in his soot eyes, notice the glimmering fascination that reflected from the unnatural lighting, yet he didn’t accept the fact that she was growing closer. He only responded like a responsible adult would. “It’s getting late.”
Sakura glanced at his wooden clock on the wall.
“Oh, shit.” Her lower lip sunk into her mouth, welcoming the teeth that bit into the flesh. “How is it already ten?”
The tension between the two of them had melted at some point, and while she still sat close to him, she still felt an odd distance separating them. Maybe it was because she was younger than him, still a senior in high school and finding that her crush on her sensei was something more than a crush and also way out of her reach.
This all should’ve been wrong, and Sakura should’ve acknowledged that the moment her beating heart would thrum against her ribcage whenever he was near. Or how her blood would turn to molten lava and she was never able to control her blush.
Maybe she would’ve acknowledged all of it if she hadn’t found that she was absolutely infatuated by this man. Maybe she would’ve known that this was all wrong if she hadn’t broken the ice that coated his personality underneath his rough, outer shell.
His fingers were now twirling the ends of her silk, rose locks and Sakura accepted it. Sasuke was gentle, he was soft-spoken when needed, calming, his presence overwhelming at times and he could come off as intimidating, but he was also her safe haven. As funny as it sounded inside of her head, she felt comfortable and relaxed around him -- even under the gaze of his abyss dark eyes, she couldn’t help the nagging feeling that encouraged her.
“We should probably get going,” he muttered through each short breath that he took. His fingers came undone from her curled ends and into the pocket of his slacks. When he stood from the sofa, he flicked the television off and offered a hand towards Sakura.
She accepted it, a jolt of static running wildly through her blood. His hand was large, his fingers soft while his palms were calloused. “Do you work out?” Sakura asked, only the realize that it was probably a random thing to ask.
“Yes,” he replied almost as quickly as she had asked. No wonder his hands were calloused; as rough as they were, he was gentle with her as he pulled her from her seat.
She twirled around on her toes and began to pack her belongings up in her bag, only to have Sasuke stop her. He reached towards the drawing that she had made and held it up. “Can I keep this?”
“Why?”
“Is it wrong for a teacher to have a drawing made by his student? He mocked with a smirk.
Sakura frowned before smiling lightly. “Whatever.”
.
.
.
Her house was dark the moment he dropped her off. The porch light had been left on, and as Sakura began to undo her seatbelt, Sasuke’s hand rested on her wrist.
“Why are you so curious about how a kiss feels?” He inquired.
The same butterflies from before flocked out, and she couldn’t help the knot that formed in her throat or the way her eyes widened. “I guess I was just curious. You see people kissing in movies like it’s no big deal, so… I just wonder what it’s really like?”
“I’m sure you’ll find out one day,” he spoke with a light hearted tone and somewhat of a smile. He retracted his hand before she nodded with curious intentions.
Sakura grabbed her bag from the back seat of his car before leaning in and smiling at him. “Good night!”
“I’ll see you in the morning,” he responded with a grimace.
.
.
.
Throughout the course of the next couple of weeks, Sakura found herself busy with school work and studying for multiple different tests. From Sasuke’s class, to Gai’s, she was either working on her running form, performing many different strength exercises to pass her physical exams, or doing page after page of homework from literature, to math, to chemistry. She felt her brain spiralling out of control; along with all of her school work, she progressed in applying for scholarships as well.
Her relationship with Ino had been awkward lately, whether it be Ino avoiding Sakura, or Sakura avoiding Ino, they hadn’t been on speaking terms. One day, Naruto finally brought the subject up to Sakura.
“When are you two going to start acting like best friends again? It’s getting weird,” he stated through each bite of ramen.
Sakura frowned at him before popping a grape in her mouth. “Not sure.”
It was Naruto’s turn to frown. “Look, I get how all you girls are with your emotions and moodiness, but c’mon. You gotta get over whatever happened and move on. It’s weird not seeing the two of you attached by the hip anymore.”
Sakura frowned slightly before reflecting on his words. “Yeah,” she answered plain and simple, “I guess you have a point.”
Naruto finally offered a gentle smile before taking another bite. “I just want you to be happy. You’ve been working on schoolwork nonstop, that I worry sometimes. You’ve become great at keeping to yourself as well.”
“What do you mean?” Sakura raised a brow in question.
“Well, you stay after school all the time working on school work, and then avoid me during the weekend because of more schoolwork.” His voice held concern and worry, as did his ocean colored eyes.
Sakura’s mind flashed to the few evenings she had been spending with Sasuke. She would wait after school and either write notes or work on scholarships, have dinner with him and then spend some quality time at his condo. While they would only watch TV, chatter over random things that had taken place throughout the day, or sit in a comfortable silence, Sakura felt that their time together was to be valued.
After all, her friends were starting to catch on to her absence.
“Sakura?” Naruto asked, his face appearing right in front of hers.
“Oh--right. There’s a lot of time and energy going into my schoolwork lately, Naruto. I have dreams, goals that I want to accomplish and if I don’t give it my all, I won’t make it.”
“Oh right! Ms. Future Doctor!” He spat out with an ear to ear grin. Sakura chuckled softly before ruffling his golden hair.
“That’s right,” she responded. “I’ll see you later, I’ve got some assignments to turn in--”
“I forgot to ask!” Naruto interrupted her with apologetic eyes. “Halloween, Friday night. Everyone is going out then coming to my place to hang out. You in?”
Sakura pursed her lips before thinking about it. Maybe it wasn’t a bad idea to get together with her friends and spend some time with them again. After all, she had a pretty set schedule of studying and tending to her secret more so than entertain the idea of being an outgoing senior girl like the rest of the gals in her class.
“Sure,” she offers. “Why not?”
.
.
.
Her phone began to vibrate along the counter, and when she glanced down at the screen, she finds Ino’s nickname in white letters.
“Hello?”
“Forehead! Naruto said you’re going to the party tomorrow. What’re you going as?”
Sakura sat with her pen in her hand as she began to think about Ino’s question. She hadn’t put any thought into it, and now that she did, she didn’t want to dress up.
“Nothing,” she responded. “I’ll just show up at Naruto’s once everyone gets back.”
“You can’t just go there without a costume, Forehead.” Ino’s voice was like venom, her reaction time quick. It was like the two of them had hardly missed a beat. Sakura laughed into the phone.
“I have nothing to wear,” her confession resulted in a short exhale from Ino.
“I’ll bring something over tomorrow and we can go together! Sound good?” Sakura began to speak, but Ino cut her off again. “Good! Bye!”
She pressed her phone down the counter and shook her head.
“Typical Ino.”
.
.
.
“I am not wearing that fucking thing outside. Do you know how cold it is right now?” Sakura hissed. Ino stood in front of her, holding the ‘sexy feline costume’ like Ino had called it.
“Every guy will love it. Just put it on,” Ino deadpanned dryly, her patience wearing thin the more Sakura refused. “Look, I’m dressing as a bunny. We’ll be cute!”
Sakura looked around her room, trying to find something that would strike up a distracting conversation, but the moment Ino shoved the outfit into her arms, she felt defeated. “If I don’t like it, I’m not wearing it -- oh, wait--”
“Shut up and put it on, Billboard!”
She frowned, her viridian eyes matching up Ino’s baby blues before submerging through the bedroom door and slinking into the bathroom. She held the costume up before groaning. She slid into it with ease, pulling her arms through the slim, black crop top and pulling the spaghetti straps over her shoulders; it hugged onto the curves of her hips, squeezed her breasts with the built in, padded bra and even made her waist look tinier than it already was.
Sakura bit her lip before pulling the spandex leggings on next.
“This is such an Ino outfit,” she whined. With the leggings pulled all the way up, she felt something hanging from the elastic band behind her -- the tail of the costume brushing against her bum.
“Such an Ino outfit.”
With cute, black flats slipped onto her feet and triangular ears holding onto her head from a headband, Sakura glanced at herself in the mirror. She swallowed, imaging just exactly what Sasuke would think if he were to see her. Her bare arms broke out with goosebumps at the thought, and the moment she walked back through the door, Ino was perched right there.
“Look how cute!”
“I feel silly,” Sakura admitted, her cheeks turning pink under the eyes of her best friend.
“Well don’t. You look great. Look at those curves, girl.”
Sakura felt her blush darken in color, the back of her neck burning at Ino’s compliment. “Fine, but I’m changing once we get to Naruto’s.”
“But that’s when the fun starts to happen! He’s having an actual party, y’know? Iruka is out of town, that means it’s party central at Naruto’s. Before we go, though,” Ino stopped Sakura before she could get around her friend. The blonde pulled out a stick of eyeliner, and with an ear to ear grin, she held one of Sakura’s shoulders and brought the pencil to her face.
“Ino,” Sakura warned, but it was too late. The blonde had already gotten her way, lining Sakura’s face with whiskers much like Naruto’s, and finishing off with a dot on her nose. Sakura felt herself seething with anger now, but Ino was happy with the final look.
“Now you’re ready.”
.
.
.
Naruto had invited Sakura, Ino, Shikamaru, Sai, Kiba, and a few others from their school for their outing, but the moment everyone showed up, they decided against it. Sakura also didn’t feel uncomfortable in her costume anymore, seeing as everyone else had dressed up as well. Ino put the icing on the cake with her bunny costume though.
“You look nice,” Naruto complimented as he began to bring their cheap beer and hard liquor up from his basement. He handed Sakura a couple of bottles to carry, and while she walked with him, she felt like multiple pairs of eyes were on her.
She hated the feeling of the skin tight leggings and the way Ino’s black crop top brushed against her skin. Sakura felt revealed, naked. “Who’s all coming tonight?” She asked, trying to distract her mind from the claustrophobic strangle that creeped up her body.
“Lots of people. From other high schools, people from colleges. I dunno yet, we’ll see!” He grinned back at her as he set the case of beer on the counter. “Should be killer though.”
“Right,” Sakura agreed. “I might go put my sweater on.”
Naruto clasped her shoulder in his hand, causing her to jump in his wake. His concerned eyes reigned down on her from above, his eyebrows raised slightly. “If you’re not comfortable with wearing that, then why wear it?”
Sakura couldn’t help but let a small smile appear on her lips. She couldn’t get over the fox ears that sat atop his head, or the bushy tail he had hanging from his waist.
“To support your party, I guess,” she responded with an unsure tone. Butterflies fluttered in her stomach while her mind did backflips. “And because Ino wanted me to dress up.”
Naruto crossed his arms before laughing slightly. “You certainly are a good friend to her. Anyways, let’s get finished setting up! People will be here any moment.”
.
.
.
Sakura found herself people watching most of the night. They came in spurts, from people coming dressed up as cute animals to deadly ones, super heroes to villains, slutty costumes to some people who didn’t even dress up. Sakura simply sat on the balcony from Naruto’s room, a drink in her hand, while her emerald eyes watched.
The patio was packed due to the beerpong tournament that Naruto had started up. The music was loud, tons of laughter and chattering, and Sakura found herself alone while she watched people make drunken asses of themselves.
As she threw the rest of her drink back, utterly disgusted with the warm beer, she made her way through Naruto’s room and downstairs to get another drink. She had been catcalled multiple times that night, but instead of responding, she carried on with her night like nothing had happened.
It wasn’t that she was refusing to have fun, she just didn’t want to be there. The moment she walked through the kitchen entry way, instead of heading towards the beer, she grabbed the hard stuff and began to make herself a drink.
“What’re you making?” A familiar sublime voice sounded against the shell of her ear. Sakura felt chills rush throughout her body, and a smile form on her lips.
“What’re you doing here?” She turned her head slightly, yet her eyes remained on the bottle while she poured the liquor into her cup. Once she finished, she turned to see his familiar smouldering eyes and that damned gorgeous smirk of his.
Sasuke’s hair wasn’t artfully ruffled around, or tamed. It was thrown around with hair gel now, his bangs falling over his eyes while he had casual clothes on that Sakura absolutely fell for. A pair of dark gray jeans, a black pullover hoodie, and a pair of Vans. He was such a mature person with a young appearance.
“You look so young,” Sakura cooed, her eyes glistening as she eyed him up and down.
“Hn, considering I still am young,” he retorted with a scoff. “I figured I’d stop by. Some friends of mine said they were coming.”
“Friends?” Sakura questioned almost instantly. Sasuke’s thumb pointed back to a guy with whitish-blue hair and pale skin. The color of his eyes looked almost unreal with that purple hue, but then again, he could’ve been wearing contacts. “Does he teach, too?”
“Nah. He’s still in college. On his last year, though,” Sasuke answered before taking her cup and glancing into it. “What did you make?”
Sakura couldn’t answer him, she couldn’t get over the fact that he was here, at one of his student’s parties, dressed down like some younger version of himself.
He looked fucking amazing.
“Also,” he whispered before reaching around her, “nice costume.”
Sakura felt the familiar blush that she had been experiencing more and more lately come to her cheeks and heat up the tips of her ears. “Ino made me and--”
“I’m serious, nice costume.”
Sakura frowned before stepping aside. “What’re you even doing?”
“Making you something else,” he responded, obviously knowing damn well what he was doing. Sakura simply watched from the side with curious eyes and a tap of her foot.
“Try this,” Sasuke finally handed back the cup before stepping back and pulling his hoodie on over his messy hair. The way it framed his high cheekbones made him look like an angel sent down from the heavens, and Sakura just couldn’t shake how young and casual he looked.
“You’re not scared of getting caught?” Sakura questioned, her anxiety getting the best of her. “You’ll get in trouble, Sasuke.”
He raised an eyebrow before shaking his head. “There’s too many people here to really notice. Plus, I’ll be leaving soon anyways.” His tone was an octave lower, his eyes a shade darker as he smirked. “Care to join me?”
“I can’t,” Sakura spoke too quickly.
Sasuke only nodded. “Fair enough,” his smirk diminished. “I’ll see you around then.”
Sakura felt every ounce of energy leave the moment he turned around, and before he could depart, she called out to him. “Wait!”
His head turned, his eyes landing on her in her silly cat costume.
“Give me two seconds,” she set the drink down and booked it upstairs. She stripped from the crop top that Ino had given her and slid into her own black hoodie, along with a pair of denim skinny jeans. She kept the black flats on, discarded the ears and rubbed the drawn on whiskers and nose off.
With her bag around her shoulders, she came back downstairs and found Sasuke waiting right by the door, girls standing in front of him, trying to strike up a conversation. Sakura stopped on the top stair and watched, but it was just so much like Sasuke to look away the moment they asked a question and have his dark eyes land on her, a smirk painting itself on his lips.
She bounced down the stairs now, meeting him at the door before they left.
“Sakura!”
She felt her blood turn to ice and her body freeze.
“Where are you going?”
It was Ino. When Sakura turned to meet her baby blue eyes, she smiled sheepishly. She could feel her stomach tying itself into a million different knots while sweat began to accumulate against her hairline. Sasuke didn’t move from his spot, he had frozen too and waited for Sakura to convince Ino as to why she was leaving.
“I’m going home,” Sakura lied through her teeth.
“Home? With this guy? Who is this?”
Sakura could hear Ino’s words slurring together, while her steps were sloppy. Now that inched her way closer, she could see the puffy red eyes on her best friend. Even her costume was looking rather haggard now.
“Who is this?” She repeated, but this time with more force to her voice.
Sasuke turned to meet her gaze, and the moment he came face to face with her, her eyes lit up.
“Woah!” Ino shouted. “Hottie!”
Sakura stifled the laugh that escaped through her lips, not only at her friend, but at the look on Sasuke’s face. He looked absolutely unamused, and the longer Ino stared at him, the narrower his eyes grew. Sakura felt that it was convenient to break up their staring contest now.
“Right, we’re going now,” Sakura said as she began to take a few steps away from her blonde friend.
Ino winked before shouting, “text me and tell me about your night!”
Sakura’s face flushed and by the time she turned on her heel, she had her hood pulled up and over her face. Sasuke followed her from behind, and although she wasn’t looking at him, she could sense the smirk on his face while his eyes shimmered with amusement.
“You’re crazy,” Sakura spoke through the fabric. “Damn crazy.”
The minimal light offered by the pale moon was rather eerie, and through Sakura’s insults, she felt Sasuke behind her in seconds. It reminded her of her first day at his condo. The way his lips pressed to the corner of her jaw, the way her body completely shut down at his touch. Now he was behind her again, and shadowing each step that she took.
Sasuke didn’t respond, only remained behind her as she led the way. They were now far away from Naruto’s party; no longer in ear shot of the music or the stragglers that had left already. They passed by trick-or-treaters and parents that walked their children, until they made it to the outer circle. They walked the path that led through the residential part of Konoha, passing by multiple houses and fenced yards.
Their quiet walk eventually stopped when Sakura noticed that she had no idea where she was going. Sasuke, as smart of a man that he is, noticed this far before she did.
“Finally realize that we’re walking blindly in the dark?”
Sakura responded with a scowl before exhaling, her back coming to lean against the nearest trunk of a maple tree. “Did you park somewhere?”
“I did,” he responded casually. He was now standing before her, his eyes gazing down on her.
Sakura felt her heart as it began to soar and her knees lock up. She was no longer casually leaning against the tree, but now, she watched as Sasuke took a step towards her.
“Where are you parked?” She squeaked out.
“Down the road,” he responded before taking another step, “in the opposite direction.”
Sakura was drowning now. She felt those familiar butterflies break free and not only flutter in her stomach, but throughout her entire body. Her emerald eyes stayed on Sasuke, her heart hammering against her chest while a lump formed in her throat.
His cinnamon and smoke scent rushed through her nostrils the closer he got, and now that he was hovering over her body, she could feel the warmth that radiated from him.
Their bodies were hardly brushing now, but the close proximity of him caused her chest to clench and her fingers to tremble. This was the closest she had ever been to a guy, and the fact that is was Sasuke made her entire body go haywire under his intense stare.
Sakura felt her hands reach out to him, one landing on his left pectoral, right above his heart. From there, she could feel the frantic beat of his heart, and he too, had been more than nervous in this intimate moment between the two of them.
“Sasuke,” she breathed out while her other hand came to rest on his other pectoral.
He was built, his body hard from beneath his clothes. Sakura was unfamiliar with what to do in a position like this, but instead of overthinking, she let her body do the thinking for her. With her hands on his pecs, Sasuke’s hand came to rest on her hip, while the other came to play with the ends of her pastel locks.
“Sakura,” he responded with a husky voice. He was closing the gap between the two of them now, his body growing closer to hers until he was leaning right up on her.
Sakura’s arms began to wrap around the back of his neck, her fingers pulling the hoodie from his head and releasing his wild, obsidian locks. She always pondered just how his hair felt, and now she knew; thick but smooth. Her nails massaged the nape of his neck, while the fingers on her other hand ran through the roots of his hair.
“You have no idea what you do to me,” his voice sounded over her ear now. His breath was warm against the skin of her neck, and while she pulled him closer, his lips pressed softly to her ear lobe.
She breathed out both a pleasurable but shocked groan into his ear, and when she felt his lips pull away from her skin, she felt her mind screaming for more.
He pulled his head away now, his eyes staring into hers, almost asking a silent permission. She didn’t know how to respond, she didn’t know what to do now. He was so close, yet so far away and the longer he looked into her eyes with those dark, abyss eyes of his own, the more Sakura desired him.
“Is this is what you really want?”
Sakura felt her lips part, and her eyes grow heavy. Of course this is what she wanted. She was practically breathing him in, soaking him up, the only thing left was to taste his lips against hers.
“Yes,” she breathed out gently.
He blinked once, twice, until his lips were just above hers, his eyelashes closing over his smoldering eyes, and just like Sasuke, Sakura felt her own eyelids close over viridian eyes.
It was almost non existent, yet the most exciting thing in the world. She felt like she was on cloud nine, yet anchored down. The only thing she could feel were his lips pressed to hers, tender and soft, gentle like the fluttering wings of a butterfly.
Sasuke’s hand cupped her cheek, the other resting on her hip while Sakura stood on her tiptoes and pulled him closer. They held each other under the pale light of the moon, their lips pressed together, while their beating hearts beat in unison.
Sakura wasn’t exactly sure why he had pulled away, but as they made eye contact for that brief second, she could see someone different in those dark eyes of his. When he pulled her back into his embrace and his lips pressed against hers once more, she tightened her grip around his neck, relishing in his scent, his touch, and his taste.
Happy fucking Halloween.

OH
Well. That certainly explains a lot.
Watanuki not born to be like Lava Lamp but just Literally being him, but as a living temporary space/time distortion that only exists temporarily.
Which I think is what finally explains why he was in danger of fading out of existence in xxxHolic, and had a few moments where he dropped out of reality completely. That was probably his natural fate all along, to just vanish from existence when his role was up.
Which Yuuko did not stand for and repeatedly brings him back to her little inbetween dimension to keep him safe. And is potentially why she makes excuses to keep him around in the first place, to stablise his existence and using her little pocket existence as a safe space to keep him going. The store is hinted to become His, after all. Maybe if he lived there permanently he could just exist regularly.
It does make me wonder if THIS is also what Yuuko’s probably disappearance will be about as well. If she will trade herself to keep Watanuki alive. As one In-between Being to another.
But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself and WHAT WAS THAT EVIL WOLVERINE SAID ABOUT SUFFERING?
Is the suffering this wish gave their parents an emotional thing, or is it a literal distortion in space time that will rip them apart? Is this also what lead to their deaths, or did they (mirroring Sakura’s parents) also trade their lives to keep Lava Lamp/Watanuki existing?
So many questions but HOT DAMN WE ARE FINALLY GETTING SOME ANSWERS AND I LOVE IT
Also I'm just noticing Yuuko's little step in that last frame as she steps in to interrupt
YUUKO ICHIHARA MVP OF THE UNIVERSE.
I LOVE how this plays out like two competing gods fighting over fate. Or maybe more relevantly, the fairies fighting at the start of Sleeping Beauty - one laying a curse of suffering and death, and the other stepping in to minimise harm as much as possible and give people a hope to survive.
Oh it’s all so beautiful. Evil Wolverine as the selfish, murdering Wish deliverer, who tricked his way into getting what he wants and piled suffering and misfortune around everyone he forces himself to meet. And Yuuko as the person who is technically completely neutral and only balances things out, but Still Steps In to ensure things ARE balanced. She cannot be the benevolent force she seems to want to be at times, but she can enforce balance, and that lets her limit Evil Wolverine when he exceeds the natural order. Wish prices are always precise - if Evil Wolverine disproportionately stretches it beyond what the price really was, Yuuko can find the spaces where he’s wrong and pull him back.
Evil Wolverine trying to connect things up into tragic endings that suit his goals, but Yuuko stepping in and saying no, actually, that's not the bargain.
And this one lonely little boy being in the centre of it all. He was never meant to exist, but here he is, a temporary mistake only meant to fill a hole, and the forces of the universe fight each other around him to either doom him entirely or to somehow keep him alive.

And here’s our opening cover!
🥺
A NICE NAP FOR THE FAMILY.
AS A TREAT
it’s what they deserve!
I think you can read a lot into even just the way they’re lying. Fai and Kurogane have their arms resting in similar positions, but on opposite sides of the page. Fai looks to the side - to the past? towards Sakura? Towards Kurogane??) Perhaps he’s turning? Like his life and goals have changed? While Kurogane looks head on, as he’s been set on the same thing for so long (protecting them all, especially from themselves). Fai holds the feather in a hand, but not tightly, as if letting it go, while Kurogane doesn’t use his hand at all and has it only barely resting under his arm. Is this indicative of his trust in Sakura, perhaps? Kurogane had already trusted her to make her own decisions and keep herself alive in Acid Tokyo, but Fai didn’t have that luxury then, making him much more protective at the time, but now he’s grown and changed and trusts in her to do her own thing more than he did before when he had very little trust to give at all. He’s also wholly committed to them now in a way he never had the chance to be before, which might also reflect in his slowly unfurling grasp. OR is it their grasp on their original goals? Kurogane is only barely holding his because his goals have already changed so much, and he’s back with Tomoyo now anyway, so his wish is complete actually! Perhaps the only member of the original family whose quest was completed in a mostly straight forward manner. Meanwhile, Fai has only just started letting go of his original goal, because the opposite of his wish to avoid Ashura has already happened, and his other wish to revive his brother is impossible, so he’s beginning the process of moving on.
Meanwhile Sakura and Lava Lamp take up centre frame, circling each other as if caught in the gravity of it all, but not directly looking at each other, not actually working FOR the other exactly. Lava Lamp still seems to hold the feather close to his chest, working SO HARD toward his goal of (???) that it’s the core of him - or is it actually a little away from his hand? Does he have another goal that the feather doesn’t actually directly contribute towards? Either way Sakura clutches her feather in a way unique from the others, holding it up before her AGAIN like she’s still conscious and doing things even though she’s asleep, because she IS.
And also Mokona is there to help!
The fan translation for the text that would be across the page reads: You who have been through no end of hardships, for now, may you simply rest, enveloped in eternal peace.
AND I’M GOING TO BE SO NORMAL ABOUT THAT.

Warning! This post contains spoilers up to chapter 170 of Tsubasa (and Chapter 71 of xxxHolic). Please skip this if you have not read that far.
Please also make no comments about what happens after that point in either manga.
~
SO here is the other splash image that really stuck out to me:
This time not because of the Seresu arc but because of how the Infinity arc itself ends.
Here's the link to the original post the image is from if you'd like the full context, but the particular quote from that post I want to use as a reference is here:
"Syaoran also sits on the throne - which as far as I can tell, isn’t his. ... The only one ever wearing the crown they’re all wearing [on their clothes] is Sakura. Now, does it make sense that Syaoran has usurped her throne? Heck yeah! He’s stolen everything from her. He’s stolen her journey (they’re following him now, always a step behind), he’s stolen her feathers, and he’s stolen the person she’s in love with."
Where I was kind of on the right track but couldn't have possibly guessed what all the chess imagery was ultimately feeding into. Looking back now the initial liveblogs for all of these Chess-related splash images are such a big mix of different iconography, so it’s very fun reading through all my old guesses back then. I think I did a really good job of trying to decipher some of it, especially the Cinderella and Snow White imagery in Chapter 140, but the Chess was a bit trickier.
Which, like, understandable, because the chess game that was happening in the chapters was stressful as heck and did not end well, but there is a nice conclusion to it with this image which is easier to read now - especially in regards to Sakura. Because it's made very clear to the viewer that the symbol of the Queen piece is in reference to her; both in these splash images (where she wears the crown at one point, and every character wears the symbol in ways that reflect their allegiance to her) and in the plotline, where she functions as the Queen of the battles taking place. Here is another good example of the symbol being used for Sakura with it right there on her throne, and the two Syaoran's wearing the symbol in smaller ways to represent their relationship to her. But with that all in mind? I had no idea what it was really getting at with Syaoran on Sakura's throne here.
BUT NOW I DO.
If you go back to that example I just gave with Sakura sitting on her throne? It's a different throne! It still makes it very clear that she's undeniably the Queen piece, with the symbol in gold actually being a key part of the throne itself.
And the throne Syaoran sits on? It has the crown symbol as part of the decoration, but it's not representing him, it's just a small symbol to show that matches Sakura's throne. This throne is his own.
He's the King piece.
(And, important distinction; the throne is not Lava Lamp's, but our original plotline Syaoran who is now in Autopilot mode.)
This wouldn't have occurred to me the first time through because I was focused so much on what this might mean for Sakura, and how she related to everyone else, but the way the Infinity Arc ends really hammers this home. After all, Sakura is the mastermind in this arc - everything that happens is according to her plan. She's not playing chess just during the literal chess matches, but during the entire plotline, moving every character and circumstance into place to enact her final plan; to activate both Chi's at once, absorb both their feather's, and trigger Fai's curse - resulting in her pseudo (if purely physical) death. But like we see in the plotline, this isn't a loss - it's a win. It's exactly how she planned things to unfold, and it will lead her to winning the game.
Just in case anyone isn't familiar, in Chess the queen is the most powerful piece capable of the widest variety of moves - but the queen is not the endgame goal. You can lose the queen piece in any game and (besides losing a powerful piece) it's not the end of the world. You can still win the game without the queen piece. It's the King piece that's the Win/Loss condition. The King is the piece you have to keep safe at all costs, even if you lose other pieces in the process. The second the King dies, the match is over. You've lost.
And this matches exactly how Sakura played the series events. She was the Queen in control of every move, and Syaoran was the Win condition she was focused on. She foresaw Fai killing Syaoran in the future - which, for her, is the Losing Scenario. She planned everything to avoid this, and she succeeded! She lost the Queen piece (ie, her physical body) but won the ultimate goal of keeping the King safe. She won the 3D future chess game that she was playing by herself, and positioned herself in the place that would have the most benefit for the victory at the end. (Which I still haven't seen, but she was VERY confident about this having a better result than Fai killing Syaoran.)
I'm also super happy that this ties in really well with the fairy tale allusions I talked about back in Chapter 140, but in ways I wasn't aware of back then either.
I talked about Snow White and how the apple (that shows up in a lot of the splash images in Infinity) may have been referring to Sakura's tendency to sleep a lot. What I didn't realise was that Sakura was essentially about to pull the Big Brain Snow White maneuver on herself to ultimately win her chess game. While in Snow White the poison apple is a trap, here Sakura sprung the trap intentionally. Fai is the apple she bit into deliberately - she arranged it so that killed her body, breaking his own curse, and sent her to the World of Dreams (and thus, she is asleep) which also placed her in a Glass Coffin (aka The Jam Jar of Dreams - Im sorry I have no memory of what it's really called). So the Snow White metaphor is now complete.
But also Cinderella! In the image for 140 Sakura is trying on a glass slipper - so she's Cinderella figure as well. But at this point in the plot the clock hadn't struck midnight just yet - like Cinderella, Sakura knew the exact time limit she had to work with, and for her the timing had to be PRECISE. She spent all of Infinity stressed out of her mind about this plan she couldn't trust anyone else with, knowing full well that if she missed the window even slightly it would ruin absolutely everything and they would all lose. Which, funnily enough, makes Yuuko the fairy godmother, since she provided Sakura with the magic she needed to make her plan happen (via wishes). This also means that Fai stabbing her with the sword is the exact moment the clock struck twelve - and like the spell finishing, Sakura could finally drop the act and explain what she had done, even as all the magic disappeared (ie, her luck being traded away). There's even a detransformation sequence of a sort, with her body and soul going in two different directions. But either way, the Cinderella metaphor is also complete!
And with all that done the last part I want to talk about is back in the image of Syaoran on the throne. He's framed on either side with the curtains that portray the chess board, and they're tied back by chains with him in the very centre. He is visually chained to the board - which, like, of course he is. With his Autopilot programming in place he's essentially just a chess piece without any will of his own - a winning piece, for sure, but he's still being moved around without his choice. He's playing the game on auto, making the moves that will lead him to the winning gambit, but without his individual soul he has no choice but to keep playing until the game is over. The goal he's working towards isn't even his - it's Evil Wolverine's. So in the same way that everyone else was a chess piece in Sakura's strategy (if, sort of, willingly), including Sakura herself, Syaoran is a piece being moved around in Evil Wolverine's favour - though if he dies, it's game over for Sakura's side as well.
I'm unclear if Syaoran dying would be a game over scenario for Evil Wolverine, but at the very least it would end the game he is currently playing.
So, in the hyper future 3D chess game that Sakura was playing by herself she couldn't properly win the game for her side by taking out Syaoran because he's her king piece too. Syaoran is the piece at the centre of everything, and will be the key to winning the game for either side. We just have to wait and see if Sakura's gambit will pay off in the way she thinks it will.

TRC Translation Notes Volume 17 (Chapters 125 - 132)
More lovely notes from the even lovelier @giniroangou!
Highlights include: more coherent wish conversations, lifespan clarifications, Kamui being even worse than before, it’s true, sweet lines from sweet people, Nick finally understanding why Sakura had to go into the Acid desert alone, clothing choices explained, touching moments all around, and Good Morning Kurogane Redux!
Chapter 125
p.5 - Yuuko says that if she were to save Fai herself, the price would be “too heavy.” This is why Kurogane looks so murderous - it sounds like she’s telling them she won’t do it. This also makes Subaru’s wish a few pages later feel less presumptuous. He’s not cutting in on the Tsubasa family; their turn is already over.
p.7 - As in the previous volume, this should be “Immediately after we came to this world” rather than “Soon after,” but I love the hilarity it’s caused.
p.12 - Subaru’s point is that the events that unfolded may have been inevitable, but they wouldn’t have happened within the reservoir if it weren’t for his presence there. It still doesn’t quite make sense, since it wasn’t his fault he got sucked in by the feathers in the first place, but it’s slightly more coherent than the translated version.
p.19 - It’s not that Fai must not receive vampire blood alone, but that if we were to receive just vampire blood he would end up drinking the blood of various people.
There’s also a subtle difference in wording about the wishes here that I feel changes the nuance slightly. Yuuko says: “Kurogane, keeping Fai from dying is your wish. Fai doesn’t want that.”
Chapter 126
p.30 - The sounds Fai is making in this scene are represented by a small tsu in Japanese (ッ), which indicates either a pause in speech or a glottal stop. To me, it gives the impression that Fai’s vocal chords are under pressure but there’s no real sound coming out, so it’s like silent/suppressed screaming. It’s up to interpretation, but if he is making any noise here it isn’t anything coherent enough to be the start of a given word.
p.32 - I would interpret Satsuki’s line as an apology for not being able to heal Fai earlier.
p.35 - Yuuko says that due to Fai’s enormous magical powers, he already had a long lifespan. For her line about his age vs Kurogane’s, “multiple times” could be an alternative translation to “many times.” In Japanese she says “nanbai mo,” which I’d say could be as few as four times (though it does have the potential to be much greater than that.)
As a side note, there is a fan translated version of this scene where Yuuko says that Kurogane’s lifespan will increase along with Fai’s. A large portion of the fandom was led to believe this and there are still people who are unaware of the proper translation, so if you see anything along those lines popping up in meta or fanfic, that’s where it comes from. It is based on a mistranslation, though.
p.36 - In the original text, Kurogane says that he saw the trust Mokona had in Yuuko when Mokona asked for her help. Since he trusts Mokona, he went along with the deal. (Just replace Mokona’s name with “that thing” lol.)
p.41 - Kamui’s “It was nothing” is ruder and more dismissive in Japanese. He says “...betsu ni,” which I think could best be represented in English as “...whatever.” It’s a total sulky teenager response.
Mokona is saying that things will be difficult for Fai from now on specifically because he’s a nice person.
p.43 - A little detail that I love: Yuuko refers to Fai as “that child” in this scene. It feels somewhat affectionate, but also gives the sense that Yuuko has been around for a very long time, especially in light of the recent revelation about Fai’s age.
Kurogane is actually setting his priorities here - he says there are still things he wants to ask, but the underground water comes first.
p.44 - Sadly, Subaru is not sharing the blame with Kamui in this scene - he’s still just saying it’s his fault.
Chapter 127
p.58 - Sakura’s first words to Lava Lamp are spoken in polite language vs the casual speech she used with Syaoran, creating an immediate distance between them that colors the silent exchange that follows.
Chapter 128
p.70 - Here, Yuuko is saying that the impurity of the water is its strength; because it hasn’t been sterilized it still has its natural power. (The antidote thing is a mistranslation.)
p.75 - Fuuma’s comment about having no means of communication is specifically in reference to Yuuko: “Since coming to this world I’ve had no way to communicate, so it’s been a while since we last spoke.”
p.76 - Fuuma refers to Subaru as “Subaru-san.” He also says Seishirou is in Subaru’s debt (“osewa ni narimashita”) - it’s a polite expression that may imply kindness, but the focus is more on Subaru doing him a favor/helping him rather than on Subaru’s attitude towards him.
p.84 - Sakura’s actual original line was, “Tell me everything that’s happened up until now,” so though she’s logically asking about everything that’s happened in Acid Tokyo, you can totally interpret this as her asking about all the things that have happened since the start of the manga. Follow your dreams!
p.87 - I’m not sure if this got lost in translation or just didn’t fully sink in, but Sakura is going out alone because that specifically is the price. If someone went with her, it wouldn’t be enough for the deal - the true value of what Sakura’s doing comes from the fact that she is undertaking something dangerous without anyone to help her.
p.89 - Kurogane doesn’t specifically tell Sakura to come back alive, but he does tell her to go and come back (“ittekoi”/行って来い) so the implication is there. Then he says, “We’ll be right here until you return.”
Chapter 129
p.93 - In Fuuma’s original line there was no implication that Sakura’s trip would be easy, just that the compass would confirm the route for her.
p.97 - Fuuma doesn’t say that the Tower will be victorious, but that they’ll have an advantage without Kamui there.
p.103 - Mokona’s speech style made this scene difficult to translate, but she’s not really asking for permission to call Lava Lamp “Syaoran” - she doesn’t actually use his name at all outside of that one question. She’s just confirming that he does indeed have the same name as their Syaoran: “You’re named Syaoran too, aren’t you?” (The official translation really committed to the fact that Mokona never uses personal pronouns, which is pretty cool in theory but unfortunately ends up forcing some of her sentences into very different configurations. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s far easier to get by in Japanese without pronouns than it is in English.)
Chapter 130
Cover page - This chapter title should be “The Crossed Line” (In the sense of someone crossing or stepping over a line.)
p.116 - To highlight how significant this moment is, the original line has quotation marks around Kurogane’s name. It also comes after a pause, so it becomes: “…. Good morning, ‘Kurogane.’”
p.125 - There are some major mistranslations here. There is no implication that Yuuko was lying about Fai’s potential to stop being a vampire. Fai calls her soft for leaving that path open - he sees it as a favor she did for the other members of the group (implied: this isn’t something he wants for himself.) Yuuko then says that it may be more cruel to give them this option than to have Fai unable to return to the way he was before, but that’s up to Fai. (Implied: the choices Fai makes regarding his options are going to determine whether it makes things more painful for his family or not.) Side note: The word that’s been translated as “traveler friends” is actually “Syaoran-kun-tachi” (Syaoran-kun and the others) so it’s not as distant as it sounds, but it’s definitely stepping around Kurogane’s direct role and investment in Fai’s well-being.
p.126 - The word Yuuko uses can be translated as “reply,” but I think “answer” would be more appropriate. She says, “... So that’s your answer?” referring not to Fai’s literal reply to Kurogane, but rather affirming that pushing Kurogane away is his answer to the entire situation he’s in.
p.127 - Fai doesn’t speculate that Kurogane had never been given a nickname - Fai says that he himself had never called anyone by a nickname before.
p.128 - Once again, the word that’s been translated as “unhappy” also means misfortune in a general sense. It’s the same word Himawari uses to talk about her effect on the people around her. Happiness may be the ideal, but I would assume Fai is worried about much more serious things than just that - if the people he cares about are unhappy but otherwise unharmed, that’s still better than a lot of alternatives.
p.129 - What’s been translated as “all the young ones in your group” was originally Yuuko saying “those children.” Given that she referred to even Fai as a child a few chapters ago, it can be assumed she’s including Kurogane in this group. She also describes their relationship as reciprocal: “To you, those children are no longer just a passing existence. And to those children too, you are someone precious. Your pain is their pain as well.”
Chapter 131
p.135 - The translation for Lava Lamp’s reply is accurate here but it might be the tone of Kurogane’s question that makes it feel off. He sees that Lava Lamp is self-conscious about wearing Fei Wang’s symbol and says, “It’s not like you wore that because you wanted to, right?” Though it invites confirmation, I would interpret this more as a reassurance than as an actual question. In starting his response with “though” (or alternatively “but”), Lava Lamp’s agreement is implied. Ie: “[I didn’t want to wear it] But I’m sure it’s not something you want to see.”
p.152 - Sakura says there will be more times when she will have to hurt people directly (not have people hurt themselves.)
p.153 - When Sakura says she wants to return Syaoran’s soul to him, she uses the verb “torimodosu,” one of the same words Syaoran used regarding her feathers. If the official translation were consistent, her line here would be, “I want to give it back.”
Chapter 132
p.157 - Fai uses the verb “ikaseru” (行かせる), which could be translated as either “make her go” or “let her go.” In this context, I would interpret this as Fai asking why they let Sakura go alone, rather than asking why they sent her alone.
None of your thoughts on Fai’s continued use of “Sakura-chan” are wrong, but I would say it’s not the “-chan” itself that indicates he’s laying claim to their relationship, but simply the fact that he hasn’t changed the name he calls her by. I wouldn’t necessarily view Fai’s consistent use of -chan and -kun with Sakura and Syaoran’s names as an inherent sign of familiarity. Note how in Fai’s discussion with Yuuko he distinguishes his nicknames for Kurogane from his more “proper” way of addressing the rest of the group. It’s normal for adults to add these suffixes to the names of children, even ones they don’t know that well, whereas many parents will drop suffixes on the names of their own children as a sign of intimacy. If Fai suddenly started saying “Sakura” instead of “Sakura-chan” it would likely have the opposite effect that saying “Kurogane” did. That being said, if he wanted to establish distance between them he could have switched to “Sakura-hime” or “The Princess” or something along those lines. Thankfully when changes of address do happen, the context usually helps make the meaning behind them fairly intuitive (as in the “Hello Kurogane” scene.) It’s just good to keep in mind that there is no solid rulebook for this stuff - it all varies depending on relative status, relationship history, tone, personality, surrounding events, etc.
p.162 - Kurogane’s original line here was, “Are you planning to go to the Princess?”/“Do you intend to go to the Princess?” so it doesn’t sound quite as harsh as the translated version.
p.165 - Sakura not knowing where to go was merely implied in the Japanese text - she originally just says that there are no more footprints.
p.169 - Kurogane refers to Sakura saying she’d come back as a “promise.” Then he says he’ll wait even if waiting is more painful than going with her.
p.171 - It may not have been clear in the translation, but Lava Lamp deliberately switches the name he uses for Sakura here from “Sakura” to “The Princess.”
p.172 - Lava Lamp differentiates between pain of the body vs pain of the heart (incidentally using the same word for “heart” that is used to describe Syaoran’s heart/soul.) If Fai was injured, the pain in Sakura’s heart would be far worse than any physical pain. This then informs the scene that follows - I assume Sakura knows her physical injuries are worse than Fai’s, but her concern for him encompasses both physical and emotional damage.

Chaptire 145 - World Falling Apart
Or: The Unraveling World
I assume Clamp’s original version of this didn’t have the funky fuschia text but I’m kind of into it so I’m not gonna look up alternate versions of this. Enjoy!
This is the partner image to this other cover, and they go very well side by side. It’s like a fancy gothic party that the entire main cast was invited to (except Mokona, who never gets invited to these parties </3). (No wait I’m pretending Mokona is the one taking the photos. There, fixed it. You’re welcome CLAMP)
The splash text is relatively straight forward, giving us another glimpse into Sakura’s determination to find our lost Syaoran. And it’s so good to see that Syaoran again, even if he doesn’t quite seem himself. He has Fai’s eye and his expression is darker, with none of the gentleness we can see in Lava Lamp. His position behind Sakura is great, too, because at this point in the story he’s constantly haunting her. She can’t see him, but he’s right there, behind every decision she makes. The arm draped around her throne points towards everything he’s stolen from her at this point too (if while on Auto-pilot) and also shows just how much he’s controlling her destiny, both by taking her feathers through violence and also by forcing Sakura to spend all her time and energy trying to find him. The ridiculously untidy state of his clothes is also kind of perfect. There’s no real self-awareness in Syaoran right now. It’s all just wild instinct, and while he’s dressed up as the Syaoran we know, he’s not really in there. For now.
Sakura and Lava Lamp are pristine by comparison. Sakura is seated in her rightful place and Lava Lamp kneels before her. I want to compare their poses to this cover here, which was stiff and forced, neither of them enjoying the experience - and that really captured the essence of their relationship at the time. In the cover we have now everyone looks a lot more relaxed, because it’s no longer an incomplete picture. All three of them are together now. It’s a view of how things should be, in an ideal world - or at least, according to Sakura. Following this train of thought, both Syaoran’s hold one of Sakura’s ribbons in their hand. Both are tied to Sakura. She has a strong connection to both of them, and if they are a proxy for the ‘red string of fate’, then it’s interesting that they both get that connection to her. It’ll be interesting to see just how it pans out, in the end. (Unless it’s going to be as tragic as I think, then replace “interesting” with “heartbreaking”)
Here are a few fun things that might not mean anything, but might mean something later: Lava Lamp kneels in loyalty to Sakura, but is actually looking entirely away from her (so is everyone, but still, he did this in the previous cover too); Lava Lamp touches the ribbon much more loosely than Syaoran, as if he’s merely holding it rather than keeping it; Lava Lamp’s other hand is mostly closed, while everyone else’s are open (he’s holding a lot back); and Sakura doesn’t actually wear the crown she’s entitled to. That last is a neat fact that wouldn’t mean anything if this wasn’t on the tails of all the other covers where the symbol of the crown was ever present and always important. If it means anything at all, it’s because it comes directly after THIS cover, where Syaoran had the same imagery going. Ie, the image of the crown hovers just over their head, but it’s not actually theirs. It was very straightforward for Syaoran (because obviously, the crown belongs to Sakura) but if we apply the same logic here then is there a reason Sakura’s crown is only an ornament, rather than the real thing? Is this Sakura the one that the crown belongs to, or is there another? Which Sakura should be in that throne, and would we be able to tell the difference if we saw it?
On a side note, if we compare this to the cover with Fai and Kurogane I actually love that Fai is, just, sitting on a tall windowsill like the ridiculously dramatic man he is. There are probably other seats in this castle, Fai. You could have sat anywhere. But the fact that he chose to be framed by the window calls back to a lot of previous imagery we’ve seen of with him being trapped in fancy settings like these. Here’s one example. The other would be that brief flashback at the end of Acid Tokyo where we got to see Child!Fai in prison. Like the window, his past is still very much what frames him as a person, and it will continue to be extra relevant the more we go forward.
All up? I love these cover images so so much, but the upcoming tragedies are slipping in more and more and I’m very nervous.
