i have an aversion to their ~quirky~ music because usually it's a type of humor that makes me grind my teeth but once we got past the whole talking about dirty incest fans and the thing with the book publisher, it's been surprisingly ok. glad they mostly transitioned to digs aimed at the show itself. but every time that music starts playing, i brace for the worst. i also just don't love the composed music for the show, i think it does it a disservice. i probably have complained about that before.

like okay dean needs to get chuck to participate in the archangel spooking lilith plan and it's all been very serious up until this point, but then the music goes to the cheesy rousing inspirational business which makes it feel very much like it's a joke. and it does go a little funny, but i think the music was too much. bleh. anyway.

i feel like i've seen him in a bunch of things but scrolling through i'll say evil is probably the only thing i've seen him in recent memory. should have gotten a cap from the previous episode with the bright lighting.

the tone on this episode was all over the place! my friend is eagerly, patiently, waiting for me to have an opinion on castiel and i'm eagerly awaiting having one. i feel like there was a bit more something happening with him and dean in this episode, giving him the tip about chuck. otherwise he just hasn't been around enough for me to have any thoughts, and he's pretty dry when he is. dry like his lips! get the dude a manual on how to care for your human suit. with some lip balm.

also, the winchester gospel. the guffaw i made, okay spn writers. i liked chuck, and didn't expect to. maybe it was another case of them making the writer(s) sympathetic. but i'm glad they didn't try to ham it up too much. i get that the concept of introducing the books would be hard to do in any serious manner, but i could have gone without the fannish specific bits personally.

also ALSO using the previous episode to kind of quickly temper the truly horrific over the top terrible events in the Torture Episode and then this one kind of easing more into the main arc and being serious but not too serious, well. was zachariah doing his little demo to dean that he'll always be a hunter deep down all we needed to address with that episode? other than sam bitching dean isn't himself and is too weak since he got back from hell.

i mean as far as i can tell, nothing really changed with dean. does starting the apocalypse-guilt cancel out embracing/enjoying torture again that you're also probably extra guilty about too?

there's not enough time in the day to deal with it anyhow and we've got plot to plow through. the apocalypse isn't gonna start itself!

i was trying to talk it through with someone and my feeling was like. earlier seasons, the traumas were smaller. sam and dean talked a lot. more than most shows do. it feel like things maybe didn't get resolved per se, but there was something going on there. they were looking at it, at least. and some things did get wholly dropped (like the mystery spot aftermath hello, bitter) but more often than not, it felt like they dealt with things. but the traumas get bigger and coming so fast, you can't keep up, there's not enough time. everything is always escalating. and i think it's exacerbated by the plot that sam and dean aren't really on the same page anymore. and maybe cas is supposed to fill that spot with dean, but it's a hard sell for me when we don't really know cas and at this point he has no personality to speak of.

i'm just feeling pretty grumpy about everything at the moment.

HI hello yes! Sorry it took me way longer to respond to this than your first ask, it’s the ADHD 😅 But for sure! And don’t worry, asking me to share headcanons doesn’t come across as rude. The enthusiasm makes me happy!

One thing I think about the Bad Batch is that they’re all a little autism coded—Hunter’s sensory stuff, Tech’s special interests, Crosshair’s tendency toward a flat affect, Wrecker sometimes missing social cues—so I feel like they all help in different ways! (I also feel like Tech and Wrecker are a bit ADHD coded, which will come back later.)

Hunter would be the one to help Echo deal with sensory overload and to help him learn to prevent it, because he has the most experience with it. He probably has things that help, like noise-canceling earmuffs or headphones, weighted eye masks to help with visual overstimulation (personally I don’t like having lightweight masks over my eyes but heavy ones feel nice, hence headcanoning weighted masks for him too), maybe… not candles probably, but some sort of pleasantly-scented oil or something to help with bad tastes and smells. And I think he’d share these with Echo until Echo got his own collection.

Tech is a great buddy to have infodump sessions with and to learn that special interests are cool and good, and maybe to expand Echo’s list of special interests. Like, Tech obviously loves technology but he also CLEARLY loves linguistics—I think he would help Echo find things he enjoys outside of the regs to develop special interests in! And then he would listen to Echo infodump about his new interest, knowing that in a few minutes it’s his turn to talk about the 800 languages and dialects of this one planet they’ve never actually been to and Echo will listen to him right back.

Wrecker seems like he sometimes misses social cues. Whether that’s out of distraction (ADHD) or not understanding them (autism) is probably up to interpretation, I feel like there’s a little of both—but I bet that he would help when Echo felt embarrassed about missing or misunderstanding a social cue by taking the attention off of Echo. I say this because he seems willing to make himself look a little silly sometimes—I imagine he probably understands the embarrassment and uses his own personality to his advantage to help Echo out without having difficult or uncomfortable conversations about it.

Crosshair… I’m not sure how he would help really! Like, I know for the other BB members I kind of used the way they I felt they were autism coded as part of how they would help or at least understand Echo, and to an extent that’s true here too? Early on in Echo’s timeline (I’m thinking s1e5 Rookies) he seems to have a bit of a flat affect, and so Crosshair would understand that because he also has that. But I’ve personally never known another autist who was particularly disturbed by their flat affect? In fact, I know/follow several other autists who have a flat affect and personally I barely notice the difference between that and a “normal” affect. People mention it because it’s something some of us experience while others of us tend to be… the opposite but I don’t know what the phrase for that is. But some autists tend to use more inflection than the average allistic person does. Anyway, all this to say it’s something people in general are aware of and that we know affects autistic people, but unless it’s a little exaggerated (like in a voice acting situation) I personally don’t really notice and so I don’t know how it affects other people/causes distress.

THAT all said, I think he still supports Echo and helps him deal with other stuff. I don’t think any of them “stays in their lane,” as it were. They all help and support him in the ways that are most comfortable for them and sometimes those overlap! Even if it’s just “sitting in the same room while Echo has a meltdown/shutdown” I feel like Crosshair would support him because even though he’s a bit flatter and less physically affectionate than the rest of the Bad Batch, he definitely still loves his brothers. It’s just less obvious to us as viewers.

And Wrecker and Tech have lots of stim and fidget toys and advice! Stimming is a shared identifying trait between autism and ADHD but personally I associate some stims with my autism and some with my ADHD and most of the ones which require toys or tools are ADHD stims, which is why I personally feel like Tech and Wrecker’s ADHD coding lends itself to fidget toys rather than the autism coding. But that’s just me!

Voltron Writing

Chapter 1/ of many I’m sure

If I approached my analysis of Voltron writing problems as a whole and overarching project I will no doubt run out of steam or even abort before I write anything so this might all be a little bit shambly. I might also come back and revamp things as I go about this project and try to make things more coherent and straight forward.

This post got me started.

One of the worst inconsistecies of the show is that Allura’s abilities are inconsistent, unexplained, and develop suddenly/conviently. All three of these traits (inconsistent, under explained, and sudden & convienent) are all issues with Voltron overall regarding other characters and narrative aspects.

1. Season One finale introduces that Allura has shapeshifting abilities

this development is sudden and convenient 

 it has been used once in the two seasons so far and only for Allura; Coran has never shapeshifted or even talked of it. No other altean has been hinted at or shown shapeshifting. It has not been referenced since

.2.Strength

After Allura shapeshifts she demonstrates considerable strength

Yet the “official” stats are her abilities show she has a very low strength count

Full disclaimer: I never consider these kinds of pokemon card abilitiy measures canon at all as they are usually full of shit but alas

She hurls Shiro across a room & body slams a metal door open 

Coran has demonstrated no such super strength at least not in a obvious way

No comment as to if Allura is as strong as an average/trained Altean or if this trait is also uniquely hers

No team comments again solidfying that allura is surprisingly strong

3. Magic

I dont even fucking know

what the fuck’s magic whats quintessence 

Why is Allura so good with quintessence

Coran’s mediocre? Why? Can’t he get better with it? Is it a royalty thing?Why is it a royal thing? Is it genetics or training or a combo?

IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT SHE CAN HEAL AN ENTIRE PLANET

“Even your father never attempted something so large” is that necessary? To make healing a whole planet seem even more ludicrous? Coran adding that it might kill her? Why? Were the stakes not already high enough?

 How does this work? I get that you pass on energy so are telling me Allura has enough quintessence in her to FUCKING HEAL A PLANET and also not die? Did she use the castle? How does the castle have that much energy?

Hagar’s blasts appear to hurt and contain Allura in S1E11 when she attacks Zarkon

But by S2E13 she just? Isn’t affected? THIS IS NOT EXPLAINED YOU CAN’T JUST MAKE ME WAIT TILL SEASON THREE TO MAYBE EXPLAIN IT. You can at least have a character note that “hey this is strange since when i can do this i’ll have to figure this out later”

Honestly this show has not explained quintessence shit, magic, Allura’s magic abilities, her connections to the Lion ad nauseum in sufficient detail AT ALL

W H E N during season two were we supposed to notice her becoming more adept with quintessence?

And I guess Coran can’t do any of this???

No seriously we’ve seen TWICE that Coran has opted for disguises (S1E5 I believe on the Balmera & S2E7 Space Mall) rather than shapeshifting

S1E5 also showed us that Coran (likely) lacks super strength (cracking his back trying to lift out the crystal--whether or not the crystal its just very heavy or Coran lacks the strength Allura has demonstrated is unclear. He specifically says he brought Hunk for his strength but Hunk is no doubt weaker than Allura (unless Hunk can bust through a fucking metal door???). Shay is able to move the crystal, by herself I believe, but again its unclear how Balmeran’s strength is compared to Altean’s. 

Other minor stuff

Allura’s battle prowess

S1E10 has Allura fire a gun backwards and she admits “I’m tense. This is a tense situation”. I get that this is played for jokes but it suggests that Allura has physically not been in a lot of battles

((This makes a TON of sense. Allura would have been a commander, planner, but she would not likely have a ton of in-field experience. She’s a princess meant to lead not a soldier and I seriously doubt Alfor had her personally go into any war zone to lead a charge. She is trained I’d argue to do so but I would say she lacks experience))

BUT S2E13 shows Allura going into battle with Kolivan & Antok

-I just feel some background or a comment on Allura’s battle experience would have been nice and filled in some gaps

-shows prowess with a staff (has this been shown remotely before? No of course not. But now (suddenly & conveniently) she’s shown she does know how to use a weapon)

-Obviously these are just small things and they may retroactively be touched on more but that doesn’t change the fact that a first time watch can be confusing
