Who is up for some diff.dg.
5 year-old, super cute, boy who got adopted, originally from Sudan was brought in by his adoptive parents.
He has been suffering from a productive cough, temperature. He was active, and other that slightly red throat I didn't see anything too serious, We did very basic lab - blood work came back with slight neutropenia and mildly elevated liver enzymes. I was thinking...ok it's something viral. Recommended fluids and symptomatic treatment, asked them to come back in 48hours or earlier if he gets worse.
The kid just started to also get vaccinated, had doses for hepatitis B, DTaP, one dose for measles.
They came back the next day bc he developed a rash.
Now....we don't have many patients with dark skin. We are in the middle of Europe, it happens, but not very often and definitely not as often as we would need during medical training so we r able to recognized a different presentation of diseases we know well. Thankfully my mentor who spent her younger years all over central Africa, she just KNEW.
He presented with this weird grey-ish rash, also he had purulent conjunctivitis, he was dehydrated and was running a high temperature. Also, his cough was worse and I could hear him wheezing as he was trying to breathe.
Sooo anyhow...
Do u know the differential for this diagnosis? Let me know in the comments.

Being Alone, Anaconda, and Cats: at Brooklyw ACC waitiny bou love 25211-10 62 06 TO BE KILLED - 4/23/2018 OLDER CHICKS NEED LOVE TOO <3 And lots of it!! And a soft doggy bed, soft & tasty treats, good massages and a nice mani-pedi so she can always look and feel her best. Hell, while we're at it we might as well just ask for the whole sha-bang for Diva!! She should be treated like a little queen in her golden years. Diva is an adorable girl who joined her former family in her old home as a little pup and now at ten years of age she's been surrendered to a strange and scary place as her family is now homeless. It would be awesome if we could help them get back on their feet so they could all return home but thats not likely so we have to do everything in our power to make sure this scary kill shelter isn't the last stop for Diva. Please read up on Diva. All of her shelter and surrender notes are below. She's out of time at the Brooklyn shelter and sometimes they think nothing of snuffing the life out of a sweet senior girl whose there through no fault of her own. Please consider opening your heart and home, but if you can't please make sure you share. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Diva can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Diva's previous owner notes that she may growl when her food (rawhide) bowl is approached. We recommend that Diva be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Diva's mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. * TO FOSTER OR ADOPT * If you would like to adopt a dog on our “To Be Killed” list, and you CAN get to the shelter in person to complete the adoption process *within 48 hours of reserve*, you can reserve the dog online until noon on the day they are scheduled to die. Supplements That Can Help IBS
With the number of people diagnosed with a Vitamin B12 and Iron deficiency increasing every day, it’s important we address an underlying cause that not many sufferers are aware of: the gut. Too many of those deficient in Iron and/or B12, are simply given supplements, sometimes indefinitely, to try and raise their levels. What they’re not doing is addressing the reason the deficiency came about in the first place. And for a lot of people, the issue is with their ability to absorb Vitamin B12 in the gastrointestinal tract - a problem that is also often accompanied by IBS-type symptoms. With Vitamin B12 and Iron both essential for almost all functions of the body, a deficiency can contribute to serious long-term ill health. Here is a summary of what we are going to cover: > How low levels of Vitamin B12 can cause Iron deficiency anemia > Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency > What causes Vitamin B12 deficiency > The functional lab testing you need to do to uncover the root cause of Vitamin B12 deficiency > How to correct a Vitamin B12 and Iron deficiency
How Vitamin B12 can Cause Iron Deficiency Anemia
Let’s get this sorted first. Why are we talking about both Vitamin B12 and Iron? Well, it’s because blood loss is one of the primary causes of Iron deficiency. And given B12 is required for the production of red blood cells, a deficiency in Vitamin B12 can lead to a deficiency in Iron. This is why the onset of anemia is often the result of a B12 deficiency rather than an Iron deficiency on its own. So, if you’ve been diagnosed with low Iron levels, the problem might actually be with your Vitamin B12 levels - our focus for this specific post.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Symptoms of a Vitamin B12 deficiency can include: > Tiredness, fatigue or low energy > Muscle weakness and aches > Shortness of breath > Dizziness or feeling light-headed > Heart palpitations > Loss of appetite > Digestive issues including diarrhoea, cramping and nausea > Mood changes including depression and anxiety > Numbness and tingling sensation in hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy) > Poor concentration, brain fog, memory loss, confusion > Low Iron levels (explained above).
What Causes Vitamin B12 Deficiency
The causes of Vitamin B12 deficiency generally fall within one of the three following categories: 1. LOW DIETARY INTAKE OF VITAMIN B12 As our bodies do not make Vitamin B12, we must rely on dietary sources or supplementation. The average adult’s daily requirement is estimated to be 2.4 micrograms a day, with the best dietary sources of B12 coming from animal products. While plant-based sources of B12 exist, studies have shown they are poorly absorbed and have little to no effect on our B12 blood levels. This presents a challenge for those who follow a vegan and vegetarian way of eating, placing them at risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency. 2. IMPAIRED ABSORPTION OF VITAMIN B12 IN THE STOMACH OR SMALL INTESTINE Even with adequate intake of B12, if our body can’t absorb the vitamin then we may still develop a deficiency. The absorption, assimilation, and methylation of B12 is a complex process that involves many steps, as summarised in the diagram below. Here are the most common reasons for poor absorption of Vitamin B12: > Low stomach acid - without sufficient HCl and pepsin, the animal proteins that are bound to Vitamin B12 are unable to be digested. This means the B12 is not ‘free’ to bind with other glycoproteins and move through the GI tract for absorption. Anyone with Atrophic Gastritis or Hypochlorhydria as a result of conditions like H. pylori bacterium infection are at particular risk. As is anyone who has been prescribed proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or acid suppressing medications. > Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency - without the production of sufficient pancreatic (digestive) enzymes, the body is unable to breakdown the Cobalamin-R complexes in the Duodenum. As a result, the B12 cannot bind with Intrinsic Factor (IF) and make its journey through the small intestine to be absorbed. > Surgical resection or disease of the distal ileum - because B12 is absorbed at the lower end of the small intestine, any surgical removal (e.g. weight loss surgery) or an inflammatory condition (e.g. Crohn’s and Celiac disease) that impairs the distal ileum will also impair absorption of Vitamin B12. 3. MTHFR GENE MUTATION Individuals with gene mutations such as MTHFR or MTRR have trouble with the process of methylating B12 into its usable form. So, while the body might absorb sufficient amounts into the blood, it is unable to absorb it into the tissues where it’s ultimately needed. Your Vitamin B12 levels might still be normal or high, however your body just struggles to use it properly. This has become a relatively hot topic recently and one that many people may be too quick to jump to. Only once you’re eating enough high quality sources of Vitamin B12 and have tested and healed your gut, whether that’s H.pylori, SIBO, parasites or other sources of inflammation, should you be looking to MTHFR gene testing. And if you do decide to complete gene testing early on, make sure you’re onto the gut testing as well. THE FUNCTIONAL LAB TESTING YOU NEED TO DO TO UNCOVER THE ROOT CAUSE OF VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY While you might have already done the standard blood test to identify low levels of Vitamin B12 and Iron, the important testing you need now is to find out the underlying root cause. These are a comprehensive Stool Test, Organic Acids Test and/or SIBO Breath Test. If none of these tests reveal underlying gut dysfunction and/or you have already healed your gut, that’s when it’s important to look to MTHFR gene testing.
How to correct a Vitamin B12 and Iron Deficiency
1. DIETARY SOURCES HIGH IN VITAMIN B12 As discussed above, the average adult’s daily requirement is 2.4 micrograms a day, with the best dietary sources of Vitamin B12 coming from animal products. And although the exact rate of absorbability depends on a person’s digestive health, here are the top food sources of B12: > Beef and chicken liver > Salmon > Herring > Mackerel > Sardines > Tuna > Trout > Organic greek yoghurt > Turkey > Beef > Lamb > Eggs 2. HEAL THE GUT TO IMPROVE VITAMIN B12 ABSORPTION Given the importance of a healthy and well-functioning GI tract for the absorption of Vitamin B12, healing your gut could be the key to healing a B12 deficiency. The most common gut related conditions I see that impair B12 absorption, are: > H. pylori - lowers stomach acidity and the animal proteins that are bound to Vitamin B12 are unable to be digested. > SIBO - bacterial overgrowths in the small intestine can consume the Vitamin B12 before it is absorbed by the body. > Parasites - infections like Giardia can also compete with the body for the absorption of Vitamin B12. If you have a Vitamin B12 deficiency and also suffer from GI related symptoms then it is advisable to have a practitioner order some functional lab tests to identify potential gut infections or other imbalances. Only once you have identified the underlying cause of the Vitamin B12 malabsorption (and deficiency) can you work to eradicate the infection and heal the lining of the gut. While healing the gut, I often recommend supplementing with HCl and digestive enzymes to help B12 absorption from food sources. 3. SUPPLEMENT VITAMIN B12 For those with permanent B12 malabsorption, such as individuals with MTHFR gene mutations, vegans/vegetarians, IBD or ileum resection, Vitamin B12 supplementation is generally recommended. For anyone healing their gut to correct a B12 deficiency, short-term supplementation might still be advisable depending on your current B12 levels and the amount of gut healing that is required. When looking for B12 supplements, be sure to look for it in the form of methylcobalamin, rather than cyanocobalamin. This Methyl-B12 form is typically the easiest for the body to absorb and utilise, giving the biggest impact on your B12 levels. There are three main ways you can get your B12 supplementation: > Orally in capsule form - easiest to find at the store or available on Amazon here (USA) or iHerb here (Australia). > Sublingual drops - recommended for those with SIBO or other gut infections or imbalances that are affecting absorption. Normally available via practitioners or available on Amazon here (USA). > Injections - recommended for more serious cases of deficiency including pernicious anemia and severe depletion causing neurological disorders.
Summary
If you suspect you have a Vitamin B12 and/or Iron deficiency, the first step is to get tested. If you are deficient in B12, step two is to identify the underlying mechanism or cause of your deficiency. Once the root cause is identified, the appropriate form of supplementation (oral, sublingual or injection), dosages and length of treatment can be determined, as well as any gut healing and rebalancing that needs to occur to heal the root cause. I hope you found this post useful and continue to work towards vibrant health, minus the B12 deficiency. Healing the gut is a journey. Back To School!
Back To School Video
It may only be July, but many parents are already preparing for Back To School. We want to help our kiddos with the multi facets of school, but this content will apply to pre-school up to college students, parents and teachers too! After all, as we have discussed in previous webinars, essential oils are a great way to support the body’s systems, emotions and to maximize overall wellness. Remember…you don’t need to be an expert to make better choices for your health and wellness and that of your family. So, let’s get started as we follow the day of a student. Those Dreaded Words…Rise & Shine - It’s Time To Wake Up! Straight off I want to grab my glass of water with a drop of Peppermint and Lemon Vitality oils in it. For children, diffusing is great option, especially with an uplifting aroma such as orange. I like to add orange to the En-r-gee blend - that will definitely get you going first thing.
The Morning Start Bath Gel wakes me up in the shower and gets me ready to physically face the day. For a more gentle wake up…diffuse oils such as Joy and Lemon, or another blend that puts a smile on your face. What About A Rise & Shine Smoothie? I personally like to start off with almond milk and a drop of Orange Vitality or Peppermint Vitality in my Pure Protein Complete Shake - of course, normally I pick the chocolate flavored one, but here’s another you could make: Blend together: 3/4 cup vanilla yogurt, 3/4 cup skim milk, 3-4 mandarins, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, ice cubes, and 2 drops of Tangerine vitality.
Breakfast is generally considered the most important meal of the day. And there is an array of healthy items from Young Living. When you get the chance please research Einkorn flour. It is an ancient grain that only has 14 chromosomes, so our bodies know how to process it easily. One of my twins has a more sensitive tummy when it comes to wheat (not really significant at all, but enough to notice her discomfort when she’s had too much), but she loves the Einkorn cereal. And it’s a cereal any parent can feel happy about giving their child, and that’s a very rare thing when you know the ingredients in cereals found in the supermarket. There really shouldn’t be any wonder why higher numbers of children are having food sensitivities and more. Health is Important - Let’s Start and Stay Mighty & Strong All Day Although Young Living carries an assortment of oil infused products created just for kids, MOST are created for the ENTIRE FAMILY. I’ve mentioned the power of NingXia Red multiple times before, so, no matter your age, enjoy this daily - to energize, fortify and revitalize the body and support overall health and wellness from head to toe. Your eyes, liver, brain and more will be thankful. This is one that is loved by everyone in our household, and I truly believe it helped me get through life with twins - they have been very active ever since they learned to walk.
Thieves Vitality essential oil blend supports a healthy immune function, but it’s a very HOT essential oil. Meaning hot to touch, as it contains powerful oils such as Clove and Cinnamon Bark. So, if this is for your child, why not combine a few drops with a carrier oil, such as Young Living’s V-6, which contains six different vegetables oils that are very light and easy to use. I then roll it on the bottom of my girls’ feet at bedtime, but you could do this as your children are about to go outside and face the day. I love to combine this for them with Oregano too, which is another hot oil. What About Specific Supplements Designed For Children?
KidScents MightyZyme is an all-natural vegetarian product in the form of chewable tablets designed to help children combat the negative effects of enzyme depletion. They address each of the digestive needs of growing bodies and assist normal digestion of all foods including proteins, carbohydrates and fats. My girls love KidScents MightyVites. It’s basically their daily vitamin, where they take between 1-3 tablets depending on what’s going on. And, I even know of adults that take these instead of the adult version. But what do we always hear about that’s so important for us?….Probiotics! But what’s so great is KidScents MightyPro, which not only has an amazing doze and quality of probiotics, but also the prebiotics, which is the food that probiotics need to do their thing! We all want a system fully of friendly bacteria! So this is great for an overall healthy system, which can easily be compromised at school. These could actually be thrown into their lunch box as they are in individual packets. And my girls still think this is candy. First Day Jitters The first day of anything can be daunting, and that includes important work presentations. All children love diffuser necklaces or bracelets, and there are so many styles on the market to choose from. These are a simple way for your child to take a comforting aroma with them wherever they go. No need to lug around a diffuser anymore.
I’ve banned my oldest from Valor as it gives her too much confidence, but other more calming blends such as Stress Away or another favorite of your child will help immensely. But as tummies are normally the first sign of jitters, the KidScents TummyGize is always at hand in my purse for my girls. It smells wonderful and great at calming them and their bellies down. Now Kids NEED Hand Soap It’s like children attract germs! I don’t know how they do it. We make our own in this house with various scents. A simple one to start with, in a foaming hand soap dispenser is to combine:
1/4 cup of unscented Castile soap 10 drops of Thieves essential oil1/2 tsp of carrier oil (instead I tend to add a drop or two of Vitamin E)And fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water. You’ll want to shake gently afterward to ensure a good mix. This is a much healthier option than the toxin filled hand soaps in any public restroom. But when you’re on the go and don’t have access to a sink and clean water, we use the Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, now labeled as Sanitizer. We all love the smell of it (it’s also infused with Peppermint essential oil). It doesn’t dry out your hands, and of course doesn’t have any of those nasty toxins in it. The small 1oz bottle is perfect for a school bag - I carry one in my purse. And the larger 7.6oz bottle, which comes with a pump, is very convenient for a teacher’s desk. Also, on a daily basis you may want to spray a special concoction in your child’s hair before they leave for school - think about protecting the body’s natural defense system. Well, we don’t want our kids sharing anything as they stick their heads together, now do we? So in a 2oz spray bottle mix 20 drops of Lavender (which is in your premium starter kit), 20 drops of Rosemary, 0.5 oz of Witch Hazel and 1.5 oz of water. Plus the use of Young Living’s KidScent’s Shampoo has a safe, mild formula designed to provide the perfect pH balance for children’s delicate skin. It also smells wonderful! Stinky Kid Spray Even if you’re not in hot Texas, kids run around and get hot and stinky, especially as they enter the teenage years. A fabulous solution is to add 15 drops of the Purification blend into a 4oz spray bottle and fill it up with distilled water. Shake well before each use, and spray smelly clothing before washing. It’s also a great one to spray in well used sneakers, or even in a school bag when something perishable has been left in there, for way too long. If you don’t have the popular Purification blend, which would be my first go-to, try the Thieves or Citrus Fresh blends.
Playtime is key for children and adults too. So, check out the pdf presentation on our website regarding Summer Sports. Isn’t it great that we have a company that provides natural products for the whole family without the worry of added synthetic ingredients. For children that hit the floor too often - grab the KidScents Owie. And for us older kids, check out the Sulfurzyme supplement, Ortho Sport Massage oil, Cool Azul Pain Cream or Sports Gel, PanAway blend, Peppermint, Deep Relief roll-on, Marjoram, Lemongrass or Copaiba essential oils. I love them all for how they make my body feel. So really, if we use ANY of these, we really don’t have an excuse not to hit the gym daily or join another sports team. Dreamsicle Fruit Dip There’s no doubt, when our children come home, they’re hungry. But usually dinner isn’t ready, so this is a great time to get some extra fruit and vegetables into their systems. If they need a little extra encouragement, why not make this quick dip by mixing together: null8oz of softened cream cheese, and1/3 cup powdered sugar
Then fold in: 4 oz of thawed whip topping and 3 drops Orange Vitality. You’ll want to chill this is in the refrigerator before serving, so whip it up earlier in the day and then it’s ready for them the moment they come home. I personally don’t add the whip topping or powdered sugar, but instead add a splash of maple syrup with a few drops of the Citrus Fresh blend or 1-2 drops each of Lavender and Lemon. Homework Study Aids
Diffusing in our household is very common when it comes to study time. Why not active your limbic system, which is the center of emotion but also learning and memory? I sometimes allow the girls to pick out what they would like diffused, but they normally love anything I combine. Young Living’s blends are already scientifically blended for us, which makes our job easier. Brain Power or Clarity are great blends to choose, and I would apply one of these before any test. Think focus, attention and concentration. Peppermint is another good one (but be careful with its high menthol content - it’s strong). It will keep you awake, that’s for sure. I personally often combine Rosemary and Orange together in our school room. The KidScents GeneYus is a fabulous option, but as it’s already pre-diluted for children I tend to rub that one directly on their skin, or they inhale it straight from a drop in their own cupped hands. When you’ve got a lot going on, this is a great choice when needing to stay on task…one of my girls really should bathe in this one. Bath time with the KidScents Line
There are multiple items in the KidScents Line, including items such a shampoo, bath gel, lotion and toothpaste. And all their packaging has been updated since this picture was taken. The important thing to note is that these products have specifically been designed to help care for our little ones. They are packed with natural ingredients and carefully chosen therapeutic-grade essential oils. They do NOT contain mineral oils (that are derived from petroleum), toxic ingredients, artificial colorings or synthetic perfumes. There are also tricks for making these products last a lot longer than you would think. Remember all Young Living’s products are highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Here’s a Detangler Spray to avoid the tears. My girls used to have major problems with other natural shampoos that required a detangler spray, otherwise there would be plenty of tears. Thankfully, since using the KidScents Shampoo and a different brush, they haven’t really had a problem, but sometimes they still get this detangler spray for fun! Heat up, but don’t boil, 1/2 cup of distilled water and add it to a 8oz spray bottle containing 1/8 cup Young Living’s Lavender Mint Conditioner, which smells amazing! Shake the bottle well until it all combines. Then add in 5 drops of Tea Tree and 5 drops of Lavender and shake again to distribute. Their hair detangler is then ready to use, but I would still shake it before each use.
When It Comes To Bedtime, Routine Is Key But who wouldn’t sleep better when their pillow smells divine? So combine in an 8oz spray bottle: 20 drops of Lavender essential oil, 1 Tbsp of Witch Hazel and top up the bottle with distilled water. Shake the bottle before each use and mist linens before bedtime. Remember from a previous webinar, the Seedlings line, which is designed for our smallest of babies has a linen spray. So if you don’t like DIY, there’s one already made for you. We also have pre-made roll-ons such as Tranquil and Rutavala, which are great options, along with the new Peace & Calming roll-on that was launched at convention this month. Roll-ons do make applying oils very convenient. In our house…a drop of Valerian on their big toe works a treat. But I commonly use Cedarwood, or KidScents Sleepyize. If you didn’t know already, my girls go to sleep really well. It’s normally within minutes. From a very early age I’ve encouraged this and an early bedtime, but I have recently increased it to 7:30-8pm. Well it is summer time! Point is…sleep is so important for us, especially children. For extra help, use this Sweet Dreams Cream Melt together 1 cup of Shea Butter and 1/2 cup of coconut oil. Allow it to cool a little, but so it’s still melted. Then add in 1/2 cup almond oil and 8 drops each of the the following essential oils: Lavender, Peace & Calming (or Peace & Calming II), Valor (or Valor II) and Cedarwood. Once combined, cool or freeze the mixture until it’s fairly solid. Then, whip the solid mixture with a mixer until it reaches a butter consistency.
At bedtime give your little one a foot rub with this mixture, or even yourself. And while your kiddos are dreaming away, why not apply one of the essential oil blends to help you CHILL OUT too; although they could be used at any time of the day or night, such as: Stress Away, Peace & Calming, or even the recently launched CBD Calm roller, which due to its extraction process has absolutely 0% THC, and has been having great results for those that have previously had trouble switching off and sleeping at night. I’ll be giving a detailed webinar on the subject of CBD next month. Depending on the time of day and your need, here are some convenient Rollerball Recipes to try:
For the morning - “up and at ‘em”: - 15 drops Bergamot, 10 drops Orange, 10 drops Lemon, 5 drops Peppermint Needing Peace & Calm: 12 drops lavender, 7 drops stress away, 8 drops Valor (or valor II), 4 drops Patchouli and 4 drops vetiver. After School practice: - 10 drops each of Frankincense, Copaiba and Idaho Balsam Fir Breathe Easy: - 10 drops each of R.C., Myrtle and Marjoram Night, Night: - 10 drops of Lavender, 10 drops Cedarwood and 5 drops of Chamomile (Roman or German, but note German is blue and you may not want that on your bed sheets). Combine the essential oils into a rollerball and top up with the carrier oil of your choice. Then apply topically, as needed. Here are some Diffuser Recipe ideas to get your children in the mood:
Rise ’N Shine: 5 drops Orange, 3 drops Peppermint Genius: 2 drops each of Peppermint, Frankincense and Orange. Test Day Prep: 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Clary Sage, 1 drop Ylang Ylang and 1 drop Marjoram Super Hero Strength: 4 drops Thieves, 3 drops Purification Homework Time: 3 drops Rosemary, 3 drops Lemon and 2 drops Peppermint Sweet Dreams: 4 drops Lavender, 2 drops Vetiver, 2 drops cedar wood and 1 drop Ylang Ylang. Have you seen Feather The Owl?
If you’re wanting a diffuser that has been tested by and for children, then Feather The Owl is a perfect choice. It was launched last week at convention. It is a humidifier, aroma diffuser, night-light and white-noise machine…ALL IN ONE. It has 10 LED light options and 5 white-noise sound options: rain, birds, ocean waves, fan and lullaby. It also comes with a free 5 ml Lavender, so you have all you need to start using it straight away. A significant amount of research has gone into this product and it also supports the environment and aviary population. We’ve already mentioned most of the KidScents Oils The KidScents essential oil blends were created to address the most common concerns of childhood. They are diluted for ages 2-12, so as parents we don’t have to think - just grab and apply as needed. We’ve got:
GeneYusOwieSleepyIze Their names are pretty much self explanatory. And we have them ALL in this household! And finally we have Teacher Gifts Gift baskets for teachers are a very popular thing now-a-days. Why not fill it with a few of your favorite Thieves Products to show your appreciation for all they do.
Plus, enjoy the peace and mind of promoting natural and effective alternatives to chemical soaps and cleaners in their classroom. I would LOVE these practical solutions! With everything we’ve covered tonight, let’s THRIVE this coming school year instead of only SURVIVING!

From biology class to “C.S.I.,” we are told again and again that our genome is at the heart of our identity. Read the sequences in the chromosomes of a single cell, and learn everything about a person’s genetic information — or, as 23andme, a prominent genetic testing company, says on its Web site, “The more you know about your DNA, the more you know about yourself.”
But scientists are discovering that — to a surprising degree — we contain genetic multitudes. Not long ago, researchers had thought it was rare for the cells in a single healthy person to differ genetically in a significant way. But scientists are finding that it’s quite common for an individual to have multiple genomes. Some people, for example, have groups of cells with mutations that are not found in the rest of the body. Some have genomes that came from other people.
“There have been whispers in the matrix about this for years, even decades, but only in a very hypothetical sense,” said Alexander Urban, a geneticist at Stanford University. Even three years ago, suggesting that there was widespread genetic variation in a single body would have been met with skepticism, he said. “You would have just run against the wall.”
But a series of recent papers by Dr. Urban and others has demonstrated that those whispers were not just hypothetical. The variation in the genomes found in a single person is too large to be ignored. “We now know it’s there,” Dr. Urban said. “Now we’re mapping this new continent.”
Dr. James R. Lupski, a leading expert on the human genome at Baylor College of Medicine, wrote in a recent review in the journal Science that the existence of multiple genomes in an individual could have a tremendous impact on the practice of medicine. “It’s changed the way I think,” he said in an interview.
Scientists are finding links from multiple genomes to certain rare diseases, and now they’re beginning to investigate genetic variations to shed light on more common disorders.
Science’s changing view is also raising questions about how forensic scientists should use DNA evidence to identify people. It’s also posing challenges for genetic counselors, who can’t assume that the genetic information from one cell can tell them about the DNA throughout a person’s body.
Human Blueprint
When an egg and sperm combine their DNA, the genome they produce contains all the necessary information for building a new human. As the egg divides to form an embryo, it produces new copies of that original genome.
For decades, geneticists have explored how an embryo can use the instructions in a single genome to develop muscles, nerves and the many other parts of the human body. They also use sequencing to understand genetic variations that can raise the risk of certain diseases. Genetic counselors can look at the results of genetic screenings to help patients and their families cope with these diseases — altering their diet, for example, if they lack a gene for a crucial enzyme.
The cost of sequencing an entire genome has fallen so drastically in the past 20 years — now a few thousand dollars, down from an estimated $3 billion for the public-private partnership that sequenced the first human genome — that doctors are beginning to sequence the entire genomes of some patients. (Sequencing can be done in as little as 50 hours.) And they’re identifying links between mutations and diseases that have never been seen before.
Yet all these powerful tests are based on the assumption that, inside our body, a genome is a genome is a genome. Scientists believed that they could look at the genome from cells taken in a cheek swab and be able to learn about the genomes of cells in the brain or the liver or anywhere else in the body.
In the mid-1900s, scientists began to get clues that this was not always true. In 1953, for example, a British woman donated a pint of blood. It turned out that some of her blood was Type O and some was Type A. The scientists who studied her concluded that she had acquired some of her blood from her twin brother in the womb, including his genomes in his blood cells.
Chimerism, as such conditions came to be known, seemed for many years to be a rarity. But “it can be commoner than we realized,” said Dr. Linda Randolph, a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles who is an author of a review of chimerism published in The American Journal of Medical Genetics in July.
Twins can end up with a mixed supply of blood when they get nutrients in the womb through the same set of blood vessels. In other cases, two fertilized eggs may fuse together. These so-called embryonic chimeras may go through life blissfully unaware of their origins.
One woman discovered she was a chimera as late as age 52. In need of a kidney transplant, she was tested so that she might find a match. The results indicated that she was not the mother of two of her three biological children. It turned out that she had originated from two genomes. One genome gave rise to her blood and some of her eggs; other eggs carried a separate genome.
Women can also gain genomes from their children. After a baby is born, it may leave some fetal cells behind in its mother’s body, where they can travel to different organs and be absorbed into those tissues. “It’s pretty likely that any woman who has been pregnant is a chimera,” Dr. Randolph said.
Everywhere You Look
As scientists begin to search for chimeras systematically — rather than waiting for them to turn up in puzzling medical tests — they’re finding them in a remarkably high fraction of people. In 2012, Canadian scientists performed autopsies on the brains of 59 women. They found neurons with Y chromosomes in 63 percent of them. The neurons likely developed from cells originating in their sons.
In The International Journal of Cancer in August, Eugen Dhimolea of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and colleagues reported that male cells can also infiltrate breast tissue. When they looked for Y chromosomes in samples of breast tissue, they found it in 56 percent of the women they investigated.
A century ago, geneticists discovered one way in which people might acquire new genomes. They were studying “mosaic animals,” rare creatures with oddly-colored patches of fur. The animals didn’t inherit the genes for these patches from their parents. Instead, while embryos, they acquired a mutation in a skin cell that divided to produce a colored patch.
Mosaicism, as this condition came to be known, was difficult to study in humans before the age of DNA sequencing. Scientists could only discover instances in which the mutations and the effects were big.
In 1960, researchers found that a form of leukemia is a result of mosaicism. A blood cell spontaneously mutates as it divides, moving a big chunk of one chromosome to another.
Later studies added support to the idea that cancer is a result of mutations in specific cells. But scientists had little idea of how common cases of mosaicism were beyond cancer.
“We didn’t have the technology to systematically think about them,” said Dr. Christopher Walsh, a geneticist at Children’s Hospital in Boston who recently published a review on mosaicism and disease in Science. “Now we’re in the midst of a revolution.”
Benign Differences
The latest findings make it clear that mosaicism is quite common — even in healthy cells.
Dr. Urban and his colleagues, for example, investigated mutations in cells called fibroblasts, which are found in connective tissue. They searched in particular for cases in which a segment of DNA was accidentally duplicated or deleted. As they reported last year, 30 percent of the fibroblasts carried at least one such mutation.
Michael Snyder of Stanford University and his colleagues searched for mosaicism by performing autopsies on six people who had died of causes other than cancer. In five of the six people they autopsied, the scientists reported last October, they found cells in different organs with stretches of DNA that had accidentally been duplicated or deleted.
Now that scientists are beginning to appreciate how common chimerism and mosaicism are, they’re investigating the effects of these conditions on our health. “That’s still open really, because these are still early days,” Dr. Urban said.
Nevertheless, said Dr. Walsh, “it’s safe to say that a large proportion of those mutations will be benign.” Recent studies on chimeras suggest that these extra genomes can even be beneficial. Chimeric cells from fetuses appear to seek out damaged tissue and help heal it, for example.
But scientists are also starting to find cases in which mutations in specific cells help give rise to diseases other than cancer. Dr. Walsh, for example, studies a childhood disorder of the brain called hemimegalencephaly, in which one side of the brain grows larger than the other, leading to devastating seizures.
“The kids have no chance for a normal life without desperate surgery to take out half of their brain,” he said.
Dr. Walsh has studied the genomes of neurons removed during those surgeries. He and his colleagues discovered that some neurons in the overgrown hemisphere have mutations to one gene. Two other teams of scientists have identified mutations on other genes, all of which help to control the growth of neurons. “We can get our hands on the mechanism of the disease,” said Dr. Walsh.
Other researchers are now investigating whether mosaicism is a factor in more common diseases, like schizophrenia. “This will play itself out over the next 5 or 10 years,” said Dr. Urban, who with his colleagues is studying it.
Moving Cautiously
Medical researchers aren’t the only scientists interested in our multitudes of personal genomes. So are forensic scientists. When they attempt to identify criminals or murder victims by matching DNA, they want to avoid being misled by the variety of genomes inside a single person.
Last year, for example, forensic scientists at the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory Division described how a saliva sample and a sperm sample from the same suspect in a sexual assault case didn’t match.
Bone marrow transplants can also confound forensic scientists. Researchers at Innsbruck Medical University in Austria took cheek swabs from 77 people who had received transplants up to nine years earlier. In 74 percent of the samples, they found a mix of genomes — both their own and those from the marrow donors, the scientists reported this year. The transplanted stem cells hadn’t just replaced blood cells, but had also become cells lining the cheek.
While the risk of confusion is real, it is manageable, experts said. “This should not be much of a concern for forensics,” said Manfred Kayser, a professor of Forensic Molecular Biology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. In the cases where mosaicism or chimerism causes confusion, forensic scientists can clear it up by other means. In the Austrian study, for example, the scientists found no marrow donor genomes in the hair of the recipients.
For genetic counselors helping clients make sense of DNA tests, our many genomes pose more serious challenges. A DNA test that uses blood cells may miss disease-causing mutations in the cells of other organs. “We can’t tell you what else is going on,” said Nancy B. Spinner, a geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania, who published a review about the implications of mosaicism for genetic counseling in the May issue of Nature Reviews Genetics.
That may change as scientists develop more powerful ways to investigate our different genomes and learn more about their links to diseases. “It’s not tomorrow that you’re going to walk into your doctor’s office and they’re going to think this way,” said Dr. Lupski. “It’s going to take time.”

What Are the Benefits of CBD?
The CBD industry is flourishing, conservatively projected to hit $16 billion in the United States by 2025. Already, the plant extract is being added to cheeseburgers, toothpicks and breath sprays. More than 60 percent of CBD users have taken it for anxiety, according to a survey of 5,000 people, conducted by the Brightfield Group, a cannabis market research firm. Chronic pain, insomnia and depression follow behind. Kim Kardashian West, for example, turned to the product when “freaking out” over the birth of her fourth baby. The professional golfer Bubba Watson drifts off to sleep with it. And Martha Stewart’s French bulldog partakes, too.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the lesser-known child of the cannabis sativa plant; its more famous sibling, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the active ingredient in pot that catapults users’ “high.” With roots in Central Asia, the plant is believed to have been first used medicinally — or for rituals — around 750 B.C., though there are other estimates too.
Cannabidiol and THC are just two of the plant’s more than 100 cannabinoids. THC is psychoactive, and CBD may or may not be, which is a matter of debate. THC can increase anxiety; it is not clear what effect CBD is having, if any, in reducing it. THC can lead to addiction and cravings; CBD is being studied to help those in recovery.
Cannabis containing 0.3 percent or less of THC is hemp. Although last year’s Farm Bill legalized hemp under federal law, it also preserved the Food and Drug Administration’s oversight of products derived from cannabis.
What are the claims?
CBD is advertised as providing relief for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is also marketed to promote sleep. Part of CBD’s popularity is that it purports to be “nonpsychoactive,” and that consumers can reap health benefits from the plant without the high (or the midnight pizza munchies).
Just as hemp seedlings are sprouting up across the United States, so is the marketing. From oils and nasal sprays to lollipops and suppositories, it seems no place is too sacred for CBD. “It’s the monster that has taken over the room,” Dr. Brad Ingram, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, said about all the wild uses for CBD now. Does CBD work?
“It’s promising in a lot of different therapeutic avenues because it’s relatively safe,” said James MacKillop, co-director of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research in Hamilton, Ontario.
Last year, the F.D.A. approved Epidiolex, a purified CBD extract, to treat rare seizure disorders in patients 2 years or older after three randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled clinical trials with 516 patients that showed the drug, taken along with other medications, helped to reduce seizures. These types of studies are the gold standard in medicine, in which participants are divided by chance, and neither the subject nor the investigator knows which group is taking the placebo or the medication.
While there is hope for treating other conditions with the plant extract, Epidiolex remains the only CBD-derived drug approved by the F.D.A. Most of the research on cannabidiol has been in animals, and its current popularity has outpaced science. “We don’t have the 101 course on CBD quite figured out yet,” said Ryan Vandrey, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Does CBD help anxiety and PTSD?
For students with generalized social anxiety, a four-minute talk, with minimal time to prepare, can be debilitating. Yet a small experiment in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology found that CBD seemed to reduce nervousness and cognitive impairment in patients with social anxiety in a simulated public speaking task.
However, a double-blind study found healthy volunteers administered CBD had little to no change in their emotional reaction to unpleasant images or words, compared to the placebo group. “If it’s a calming drug, it should change their responses to the stimuli,” said Harriet de Wit, co-author of the study and a professor in the University of Chicago’s department of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience. “But it didn’t.”
Many soldiers return home haunted by war and PTSD and often avoid certain activities, places or people associated with their traumatic events. The Department of Veterans Affairs is funding its first study on CBD, pairing it with psychotherapy.
“Our top therapies attempt to break the association between reminders of the trauma and the fear response,” said Mallory Loflin, an assistant adjunct professor at the University of California, San Diego and the study’s principal investigator. “We think that CBD, at least in animal models, can help that process happen a lot faster.” While large clinical trials are underway, psychologists say there isn’t compelling evidence yet as to whether this is a viable treatment.
Does CBD help sleep and depression?
Up in the wee hours of the night, stuck watching videos of puppies? CBD may be promising as a sleep aid; one of the side effects of the Epidiolex trials for epilepsy was drowsiness, according to Mr. MacKillop, a co-author of a review on cannabinoids and sleep. “If you are looking for new treatments for sleep, that may be a clue,” he said.
But he cautions that the side effects could have been because of an interaction with other medications the children were taking to control the seizures. So far, there hasn’t been a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial (the gold standard) on sleep disorders and CBD.
A recent chart review of 72 psychiatric patients treated with CBD found that anxiety improved, but not sleep. “Over all, we did not find that it panned out as a useful treatment for sleep,” said Dr. Scott Shannon, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado, Denver and the lead author of the review in The Permanente Journal.
Sleep can be disrupted for many reasons, including depression. Rodents seemed to adapt better to stressful conditions and exhibited less depressive-like behavior after taking CBD, according to a review in Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy. “Surprisingly, CBD seems to act faster than conventional antidepressants,” wrote one of the authors of a new review, Sâmia Joca, a fellow at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies in Denmark and an associate professor at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, in an email interview. Of course, it’s difficult to detect depression in animals, but the studies that Ms. Joca and her colleagues reviewed suggested that in models of chronic stress exposure, the mice and rats treated with CBD were more resilient.
But without clinical trials in humans, psychologists say CBD’s effect on depression is still a hypothesis, and not an evidence-based treatment.
Is CBD harmful?
“If you take pure CBD, it’s pretty safe,” said Marcel Bonn-Miller, an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. Side effects in the Epidiolex trial included diarrhea, sleepiness, fatigue, weakness, rash, decreased appetite and elevated liver enzymes. Also, the safe amount to consume in a day, or at all during pregnancy, is still not known.
Recently, the F.D.A. sent a warning letter to Curaleaf Inc. about its “unsubstantiated claims” that the plant extract treats a variety of conditions from pet anxiety and depression to cancer and opioid withdrawal. (In a statement, the company said that some of the products in question had been discontinued and that it was working with the F.D.A.)
Dr. Smita Das, chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Addiction Psychiatry’s cannabis work group, does not recommend CBD for anxiety, PTSD, sleep or depression. With patients turning to these to unproven products, she is worried that they may delay seeking appropriate mental health care: “I’m dually concerned with how exposure to CBD products can lead somebody into continuing to cannabis products.”
Some CBD products may contain unwanted surprises. Forensic toxicologists at Virginia Commonwealth University examined nine e-liquids advertised as being 100 percent natural CBD extracts. They found one with dextromethorphan, or DXM, used in over-the counter cough medications and considered addictive when abused; and four with a synthetic cannabinoid, sometimes called Spice, that can cause anxiety, psychosis, tachycardia and death, according to a study last year in Forensic Science International.
Earlier research found fewer than a third of 84 products studied contained the amount of CBD on their labels. Some users of CBD have also failed drug tests when the product contained more THC than indicated.
This year, 1,090 people have contacted poison control centers about CBD, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Over a third are estimated to have received medical attention, and 46 were admitted into a critical care unit, possibly because of exposure to other products, or drug interactions. In addition, concern over 318 animals poured into the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Animal Poison Control Center.
Is CBD a scam or not?
A few drops of CBD oil in a mocha or smoothie are not likely to do anything, researchers contend. Doctors say another force may also be at play in people feeling good: the placebo effect. That’s when someone believes a drug is working and symptoms seem to improve.
“CBD is not a scam,” said Yasmin Hurd, director of the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai in New York City who led a double-blind study of 42 recovering heroin addicts and found that CBD reduced both cravings and cue-based anxiety, both of which can cycle people back into using. “It has a potential medicinal value, but when we are putting it into mascara and putting it into tampons, for God’s sake, to me, that’s a scam.”

When Less is More: Sensible Use of Supplements
Cailin R. Heinze
NOVEMBER 16, 2018
We discussed the regulation (or lack thereof) and safety of dietary supplements in an earlier post, but I’d like to address a related problem – excessive use of supplements. We’ve had a number of cases where pet owners were using 3-10+ different products on top of their pet’s normal diet and treats – vitamins, minerals, herbs, joint supplements, etc. At best this is typically a waste of money because of the lack of evidence for the usefulness of the majority of dietary supplements. At worse the supplements themselves can contribute to health problems.
Even if you carefully select supplements that have a good history of meeting their label claims and some data to support a potential benefit, supplements can have interactions with each other, medications, or even with your pet’s regular diet which can lead to adverse health outcomes. Some examples:
One of my long-term clients was feeding her dog 15 different supplement products, including 5 geared towards joint health and 3 for dental health, which were health issues that she was very concerned about. I had recommended only 2 of the products. Her dog had persistently increased liver enzymes after adding on the additional supplements. I was worried that supplements and all their unknown and often overlapping ingredients could be contributing and finally convinced my client to stop the majority of them. She called me a month later to tell me sheepishly that the dog’s liver enzymes had normalized, suggesting that one or more of the supplements had been causing liver damage.
Another dog presented for high blood calcium and was on many dietary supplements that contained similar nutrients. We couldn’t find an obvious medical cause for the high calcium, but the total levels of some of the nutrients (such as vitamin D) that the dog was getting were concerning, so we advised stopping all supplements. The dog’s calcium levels returned to normal.
One of my patients was taking a drug that can increase blood potassium values and was also taking supplements that contained a lot of potassium, in addition to the amount in the diet. The drug plus the added potassium caused his blood levels of potassium to become too high.
As you can see from these examples (and my colleagues and I have plenty more of them!), supplements are not always harmless – they can cause serious health issues. In fact, in people, a study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine suggested that dietary supplements result in over 23,000 human emergency room visits each year!
Here are some tips for making sure you’re not putting your pet at risk with excessive dietary supplements:
Discuss all supplements with your pet’s veterinarian.
Be a skeptic – if you are considering a new supplement, look for evidence that the supplement meets its label claim and is safe.
Compare the nutrients between the products you are using and look for nutrients that are present in more than one product or have a lower threshold for toxicity such as vitamin A, vitamin D, and selenium – add up the amounts of each nutrient that your pet would get from all the supplements and discuss these amounts with your veterinarian.
Avoid products with overlapping ingredients – do not use two products for joints that both contain chondroitin and glucosamine, for instance. While these ingredients are relatively safe, if a higher dose is appropriate, you should be feeding more of one product, not adding on a new product.
If you are using more than 2-3 dietary supplements on top of a commercial pet food, you should carefully consider the reasons and data behind the use of the supplements.
If your pet is eating a commercial pet food, they should not need any vitamin or mineral supplements unless a specific health issue has been identified that might benefit from higher amounts. While vitamin/mineral supplements seem like a safe bet, they have been shown to increase the risk of some health issues in people.
If your pet is eating a home-cooked diet, a standard vitamin/mineral supplement designed for feeding with a regular diet to normal healthy animals is not going to be meeting their nutrient needs – work with a board-certified nutritionist (or visit Balanceit.com if your pet is healthy) to design a nutritionally balanced diet for your pet with appropriate supplementation.

Want more details on the fat-shrinking effects?
Here's the science:
Metabolic Enhancer # 1: The Fat Shrinker.
This red tea contains Aspalathin, the incredible fat-cell shrinker.7, 8
Aspalathin contains a unique bioflavonoid which reduces stress hormones that contribute to hunger and the storage of fat, while it increases glucose uptake to aid in the balance of blood sugar levels and insulin resistance.7, 8
That means you'll feel more energized while you get thin, because Aspalathin has been shown to inhibit the production of new fat cells!10
Even more important, Aspalathin's powerful antioxidants protect the liver against damage, aid in reducing cholesterol, help regulate your blood sugar levels, and even improve your mood.
Now, it's important that this ingredient is mixed at just the right amount. That's why you'll need to download the recipe today and follow it exactly; otherwise, you won't get the results you want!
Metabolic Enhancer # 2: The Fat Storage Stopper.
This 2nd unique ingredient has 4 different ways it helps with fat loss.
It helps by decreasing calorie intake with a mechanism that works by blocking dietary fat digestion and then acting as an antioxidant and reducing inflammation.
Plus, it increases feelings of fullness and enhances glucose and fat metabolism so you burn more fat while absorbing fewer calories! This is important because it means you can still eat plenty of food, and your body will simply take fewer calories, making it easy to lose weight.
Metabolic Enhancer # 3: The Fat Unlocker.
The 3rd unique ingredient can increase blood flow and stimulate the secretion of adrenaline to boost your metabolic fat-burning rate while it improves insulin sensitivity and lowers cholesterol.
It is a great detoxifier and it even helps your digestive system clear food faster, keeping your whole-body cleaner.
Metabolic Enhancer # 4: The Fat Cleanser.
The 4th unique ingredient is a diuretic, so it promotes urine flow without altering the excretion of sodium & potassium, and it won't cause dehydration. This is critical to detoxing your body the right way!
It promotes the functioning of the kidneys and liver and increases the amounts of various enzymes in the digestive tract so it helps improve digestion and cleanses the fat.
Again, it's incredibly important that you use these ingredients in just the right amount. If you just mix them all together without the recipe, you won't enjoy the body detoxing, fat-burning, energy-boosting effects that you need!
Metabolic Enhancer # 5: The Hunger Killer.
The final unique ingredient in this red tea helps the body to metabolize carbohydrates more effectively.
It has been shown to lower insulin resistance while stimulating metabolism, helping prevent increased fat storage by ensuring that lower blood sugar levels are maintained.9
This aromatic spice improves the speed of digestion and gives relief from gas and bloating too. It makes this red tea taste delicious, and it adds a powerful fat-burning boost!
The Red Tea Detox is the breakthrough many people who have been struggling to lose fat have been waiting for.
A delicious red tea that means no more having to visit doctors that don't care about what you're going through and don't want to see you get better. No lectures about losing weight, no expensive pills, no starving yourself and no intense workouts.
Best of all, it helps eliminate harmful fat by working with your body's natural fat-burning metabolism and doing it all without you feeling any cravings or being hungry!
Imagine enjoying the foods you love - steak, a beer, or even chocolate ice cream - completely guilt-free.
Imagine living a life free of expensive prescriptions and endless doctor's visits to renew the pills.
Imagine feeling good and living your life without obsessing about every single calorie you eat, all while knowing your health could be protected by one of the most powerful natural healing teas ever discovered.

10 Steps for Healthy Brain Function in Reno
10 Steps for Healthy Brain Function in Reno
Hey Reno, Do you want a Healthy Brain Function?
Did you know you can delay and possibly reverse Alzheimer’s disease and create a healthy brain ?
Alzheimers Disease and Healthy Brain Function For Reno NV
Here is a story about a man that was 6 feet, 3 inches tall, 295 pounds of jiggly fat, Teddy is our larger than life, gregarious, fun patient. Everything he does is big. His hands are big; his shoes are big, a size 13. He drives a big old 1978 Lincoln Continental and man can he eat. A side of beef to Teddy is a snack.
Two weeks ago, at midnight, Teddy called in a panic. He’d miscalculated the depth of his garage and drove the Lincoln through the back wall into the kitchen. When I got there, Teddy was pacing back and forth trampling over electric wires exposed from where the formerly built in oven resided. He was disheveled and glassy-eyed.
“How?, How?, How? ” Teddy asked over and over. “Drinking,” I asked. Teddy shook his head no. From this I knew. In our 25 year association, I’d never seen Teddy even look at anything alcoholic. Teddy was (rightly so) visibly upset.
“Hurt?,” I asked. “Don’t worry about this,” I said pointing to the tangled mess of bricks, hood ornament, and wrecked appliances. “This is fixable.” Teddy shook his head, pointing to his brain. “I’ve got a screw loose, I don’t think I have a brain that’s healthy ” he said.
“This is news,” I asked. “You’ve always been a bit of a fashlepta crank, crazy person.”
“You don’t understand,” he said. “Last week I put the car keys in the freezer. I went to the market and ended up way out in the desert. I don’t even know how I got there. I dumped coffee grounds into the washing machine. What kind of functioning healthy brain is that?”
I opened the freezer door and peered in. “No keys in here, “ I said. “Just this.” I pulled out three plastic cups filled with a straw-colored liquid.
“Iced tea,” Teddy said. He took a hammer out of a drawer and smashed one cup on the counter, and slurped the melting tea out of the broken plastic container.
“You are a little crazy,” I said, regretting it immediately. Teddy began to cry. “I’m losing it,” he said. “I have Old Timer’s Disease, don’t I?”
“Alzheimer’s,” I said. “Maybe. Or just a little dementia. Happens to all of us.”
“What’s the difference?”
“Dementia affects memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily functioning. (1) Are you doing any of these?:”
1. Subtle short-term memory changes. 2. Difficulty finding the right words. 3. Mood changes. 4. Apathy. 5. Difficulty in completing routine tasks. Difficulty in following storylines. 6. Confusion. A failing sense of direction.
“Some,” he said,” “And Old Timer’s?”
“Alzheimer’s,” I corrected him, “is a type of dementia leading to memory, thinking and behavioral issues. Alzheimer’s is progressive and unfortunately, fatal. Any of this sound like you?” (2)
1. Memory loss that disrupts day to day living. They misplace everyday items. 2. Planning and problem-solving difficulties. Concentration issues. 3. An inability to complete simple tasks. The patient withdraws from activities. 4. Confusion as to time and place. New onset of poor judgment. 5. Difficulty with visual images, reading comprehension, or judging distances. 6. New difficulties following or joining conversations.
“How do I know if it’s just old age-related issues,” Teddy asked
“What can I do,” Teddy asked. “At least ten things,” I said. “Only ten,” Teddy asked. “I’ll throw in an extra,“ I said.
10 Steps to a Healthy Brain
1. Keep Your Blood Sugar Balanced 2. Eat Healthy Fats 3. Get Adequate and Restful Sleep 4. Enough (but not too much) Vitamin D3 is Essential for the Brain to Function Properly 5. Get Your Gut In Order 6. Maintain Adequate Methylation 7. Balance Your Hormones 8. 6 Fixes for A Healthy Heart 9. Exercise 10. Lifetime Learning
Keep Your Blood Sugar Balanced
In a previous article, (4) we made the case that, just as the presence of the police is not the cause, but the effect of burglaries, high blood sugar is not the cause, but the effect of poorly functioning insulin. Know as insulin resistance, like an alcoholic who needs more and more booze to get the same “high,” when we bombard our body with too much sugar, in the form of sugar itself, or simple carbohydrates, we develop an immunity of sorts to insulin’s effect. The result is persistent hyperglycemia or diabetes. The downstream effect of “insulin” resistance is brain “starvation. “ The brain atrophies, resulting in impaired function, memory, speech, movement, and personality loss. Continually feeding refined foods yields increased glucose levels becoming the norm. Elevated glucose levels damage blood vessels (atherosclerosis) and decrease neurotransmitter function. The result is moodiness and anxiety.
Action Step: 1. Replace refined carbohydrates with: ● Quinoa, brown rice, oats, buckwheat, millet, wholemeal bread and wholemeal pasta ● ↓ high sugar foods: White bread, white pasta and white rice, pastries, confectionery, and sugary fizzy drinks ● Avoid stimulants which raise our blood sugar levels: Coffee and alcohol ● Normalize blood sugar with our Mini-Fast with Bone Broth Diet (5) or a whole-foods, low-glycemic diet. (6) 2. Eat Healthy Fats Alternatively, the brain can convert fat to energy (20 gm/d) in the form of ketone bodies. “Healthy” fats restore and renew brain cells (neurons) and brain function. A primary exogenous source of ketone bodies is medium chain triglycerides (MCT) found in coconut oil. (7) 60 % of the brain is fat. (8) 25% of that is docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. As DHA is considered “essential,” i.e., diet-derived., omega 3 fatty acids in doses ranging from 1-4 grams/day provides the brain with more than enough DHA.
DHA rich foods include fish, liver, and brains. Coconut oil is a rich source of DHA. DHA synthesizes neurotransmitters ensuring the smooth functioning of the brain. Adequate levels are linked verbal fluency and learning. Diminished levels of DHA results in memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease. Improvement is seen with doses as low as 900 mg/day. A good proxy measure of the Omega3/Omega 6 ratio is c-Reactive Protein (cRP). A normal range is 0-4.9 mg/dL. Optimally we like to see cRP <1.0 mg/dL. Action Steps: Increase: ● Sardines, Anchovies, Mackerel, Herring and Wild Salmon ● Flaxseeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds and walnuts ● Extra-virgin olive oil, avocados, whole eggs, nuts, and seeds. Avoid: Hydrogenated vegetable fats in processed foods such as shop-bought cakes and biscuits, hard margarine, takeaways, pastry, pies and fried foods.
3. Get Adequate and Restful Sleep
Sleep lays the groundwork for new mental insights, is needed for creativity, memory, improved physical performance, and aids in the growth of brain-synaptic connections. Sleep deprivation results in decreased vitamin C, zinc and magnesium levels, and malfunctioning of our immune system lowering serotonin and melatonin. Sleep deprived individuals crave sugar and refined carbohydrates.
Action Step:
7 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night for optimal brain function. 4. Enough (but not too much) Vitamin D3 is Essential for the Brain to Function Properly. Vitamin D3 is essential for increased nerve growth in the brain. Vitamin D3 facilitates planning, processing information, and formation of new memories. Inadequate levels of Vitamin D3 result in poor brain function. 20 minutes of unblocked sun exposure adds 20,000 IU of Vitamin D3 per day. A normal measure of 25 OH Vitamin D. Normal ranges from 30-100 ng/ml. Our goal is at least 50-80 ng/ml.
Action Step:
High-quality supplementation will increase serum blood level by 8 ng/ml for every 1000 IU administered in 6-8 weeks time. 5. Get Your Gut In Order Our GI tract is considered our “second brain.” Gut bacteria transmit information to the brain via the vagus nerve. (9) The tenth cranial nerve runs from the brainstem to the nervous system of the GI tract. Gut health impacts brain function. Neurons (brain cells) populate the gut increasing serotonin. A damaged GI tract can alter mood due to diminished serotonin. Processed foods destroy healthy microflora. Sugar breeds pathologic bacteria and yeast.
Action Steps: The 4 R Program
● Remove Inflammatory Foods o Infections, even low-grade infections, need to be treated with herbs, antiparasitic and medication, anti-fungal supplements, and or antibiotics. o Gluten, dairy, corn, soy, eggs, and sugar. o Gastric irritants; alcohol, caffeine or drugs. ● Repair o Clean Whole Foods, Fermented foods o Add Omega 3 F.A. o Add Healing Herbs o L-glutamine, Zinc, Omega 3 fish oil, Vitamins A, C, E, Slippery Elm, Aloe vera (10) ● Restore o Fermented Foods o Probiotics ● Replace o Digestive Enzymes o Himalayan Pink Salt
6. Maintain Adequate Methylation Methylation is the process of taking a single carbon and three hydrogens, known as a methyl group, and applying it to countless critical functions in the body such as: thinking, repairing DNA, turning on and off genes, fighting infections and getting rid of environmental toxins. (11) Methylation is essential for the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Malfunction of the methylation cycle is due to a diet deficient in B6, B12, Folate or due to a genetic variation. The result is an increase in homocysteine measured in the serum as greater than 10 umol/L. Normal Homocysteine ensures proper metabolism of neurotransmitters. It balances mood, cognition, maintains brain volume, and protects memory retention. Elevated homocysteine results in mental fogginess, brain atrophy, and peripheral neuropathy.
Action Steps: Eat: i. Wholemeal grains such as brown rice, brown pasta, brown bread and oats ii. Dark green leafy vegetables iii. Organic poultry and grass-fed beef iv. Organic dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and milk (12) v. Pulses such as lentils and all types of beans vi. Nuts and seeds
7. Balance Your Hormones Traditionally steroidal hormones were thought of as peripherally generated. In 1990, Baulieu and Robel reported on the biosynthesis of steroidal hormones, produced via the same steroidogenic pathway as takes place in the peripheral glands, within the brain. (13) Designated ‘neurosteroids,’ these hormones accumulate in the brain independent of those supplied by peripheral endocrine glands. They have the same excitatory and inhibitory effects on neurons and are implicated in the control of behavioral activities.
The cerebrally generated hormones include: ● Pregnenolone ● Progesterone ● Allopregnanolone ● Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), (DHEA-S) ● Deoxycorticosterone ● Allotetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone Any disruption, even a mild one, of the cranial vault can lead to dysfunction of the neuro-steroidal pathway with resultant neurobehavioral changes. Symptoms may not be evident for 3-12 months post trauma and include: Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, psychosis, and suicidal ideation. 3 months Post TBI there is a 34% incidence of hormonal abnormalities. Diabetes Insipidus is present 8.6% of the time; hyperprolactinemia 4.3% of the time. At 12 months post-TBI panhypopituitarism is 30.3%. HGH deficiency is 20%. HGH deficiency manifests as: 1. Rapid weight gain 2. Excessive anxiety 3. Depression along 4. Deficits in: a. Attention b. Executive functioning c. Memory d. Emotion e. Cognition f. Mood Anxiety/Depression g. Poor overall physical health and quality of life HGH Replacement results in improvement in: 1. Cardiovascular Risk by reducing inflammatory cytokines IL-6, Il-1, 2. cRP, Homocysteine 3. Concentration 4. Memory 5. Depression 6. Anxiety 7. Fatigue 8. Lean body mass, skin thickness 9. Lumbar vertebral bone density 10. A 14.4 % decrease in adipose-tissue mass 8. 7 Fixes for A Healthy Heart 1. Do not smoke 2. Exercise at least 2.5 hours each week (14) 3. Limit TV watching to less than 7 hours a week 4. Consume a high antioxidant diet 5. Maintain BP <130/<85; Total Cholesterol <200 6. Limit alcohol to no more than one drink daily (15) 7. Maintain a Body Mass Index less than 25. 9. Exercise Exercise encourages the brain to work at its’ optimum capacity. (16) Nerve cells multiply. The brain releases neurotrophic factors-Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that benefits cognitive functions including learning. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, improves development and survival of neurons, decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, (17) and boosts mitochondrial function. High-intensity interval training is the most beneficial form of exercise. (18) 10. Lifetime Learning As we learn, the size and structure of our neurons and synapses change. Mind-training exercises keep the brain fit. Memory games, crossword puzzles, board games prevent atrophy and disuse. A famous 2014 study found that mild to moderate participation in ballroom dancing reduced the incidence of Alzheimer’s Disease vs. Non-Dancers by 50 %(19)
The Extra Bonus Topic Covered previously in the August 2017 issue of Healthy Beginnings Magazine we described the judicious use of our “Big 6” Herbal Nutraceutical Supplements : (20) 1. Ceylon Cinnamon; 500-1000 mg./d 2. Chromium picolinate; 200-800 mcg/d 3. Berberine; 400 mg/d 4. Alpha Lipoic Acid; 200-400 mcg/d 5. Vanadium; 50-200 mg/d 6. Gymnema Sylvestre; 10-50 mg.
