The Tragedy Of Saudi Arabia’s War
By Declan Walsh, NY Times, Oct. 26, 2018
Chest heaving and eyes fluttering, the 3-year-old boy lay silently on a hospital ward in the highland town of Hajjah, a bag of bones fighting for breath.
His father, Ali al-Hajaji, stood anxiously over him. Mr. Hajaji had already lost one son three weeks earlier to the epidemic of hunger sweeping across Yemen. Now he feared that a second was slipping away.
It wasn’t for a lack of food in the area: The stores outside the hospital gate were filled with goods and the markets were bustling. But Mr. Hajaji couldn’t afford any of it because prices were rising too fast.
“I can barely buy a piece of stale bread,” he said. “That’s why my children are dying before my eyes.”
The devastating war in Yemen has gotten more attention recently as outrage over the killing of a Saudi dissident in Istanbul has turned a spotlight on Saudi actions elsewhere. The harshest criticism of the Saudi-led war has focused on the airstrikes that have killed thousands of civilians at weddings, funerals and on school buses, aided by American-supplied bombs and intelligence.
But aid experts and United Nations officials say a more insidious form of warfare is also being waged in Yemen, an economic war that is exacting a far greater toll on civilians and now risks tipping the country into a famine of catastrophic proportions.
Under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi-led coalition and its Yemeni allies have imposed a raft of punitive economic measures aimed at undercutting the Houthi rebels who control northern Yemen. But these actions--including periodic blockades, stringent import restrictions and withholding the salaries of about a million civil servants--have landed on the backs of civilians, laying the economy to waste and driving millions deeper into poverty.
Those measures have inflicted a slow-burn toll: infrastructure destroyed, jobs lost, a weakening currency and soaring prices. But in recent weeks the economic collapse has gathered pace at alarming speed, causing top United Nations officials to revise their predictions of famine.
“There is now a clear and present danger of an imminent and great, big famine engulfing Yemen,” Mark Lowcock, the under secretary for humanitarian affairs, told the Security Council on Tuesday. Eight million Yemenis already depend on emergency food aid to survive, he said, a figure that could soon rise to 14 million, or half Yemen’s population.
“People think famine is just a lack of food,” said Alex de Waal, author of “Mass Starvation” which analyzes recent man-made famines. “But in Yemen it’s about a war on the economy.”
The signs are everywhere, cutting across boundaries of class, tribe and region. Unpaid university professors issue desperate appeals for help on social media. Doctors and teachers are forced to sell their gold, land or cars to feed their families. On the streets of the capital, Sana, an elderly woman begs for alms with a loudspeaker.
“Help me,” the woman, Zahra Bajali, calls out. “I have a sick husband. I have a house for rent. Help.”
And in the hushed hunger wards, ailing infants hover between life and death. Of nearly two million malnourished children in Yemen, 400,000 are considered critically ill--a figure projected to rise by one quarter in the coming months.
“We are being crushed,” said Dr. Mekkia Mahdi at the health clinic in Aslam, an impoverished northwestern town that has been swamped with refugees fleeing the fighting in Hudaydah, an embattled port city 90 miles to the south.
Flitting between the beds at her spartan clinic, she cajoled mothers, dispensed orders to medics and spoon-fed milk to sickly infants. For some it was too late: the night before, an 11-month old boy had died. He weighed five and a half pounds.
Looking around her, Dr. Mahdi could not fathom the Western obsession with the Saudi killing of Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.
“We’re surprised the Khashoggi case is getting so much attention while millions of Yemeni children are suffering,” she said. “Nobody gives a damn about them.”
She tugged on the flaccid skin of a drowsy 7-year-old girl with stick-like arms. “Look,” she said. “No meat. Only bones.”
The embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington did not respond to questions about the country’s policies in Yemen. But Saudi officials have defended their actions, citing rockets fired across their border by the Houthis, an armed group professing Zaidi Islam, an offshoot of Shiism, that Saudi Arabia, a Sunni monarchy, views as a proxy for its regional rival, Iran.
The Saudis point out that they, along with the United Arab Emirates, are among the most generous donors to Yemen’s humanitarian relief effort. Last spring, the two allies pledged $1 billion in aid to Yemen. In January, Saudi Arabia deposited $2 billion in Yemen’s central bank to prop up its currency.
But those efforts have been overshadowed by the coalition’s attacks on Yemen’s economy, including the denial of salaries to civil servants, a partial blockade that has driven up food prices, and the printing of vast amounts of bank notes, which caused the currency to plunge.
And the offensive to capture Hudaydah, which started in June, has endangered the main lifeline for imports to northern Yemen, displaced 570,000 people and edged many more closer to starvation.
A famine here, Mr. Lowcock warned, would be “much bigger than anything any professional in this field has seen during their working lives.”
When Ali Hajaji’s son fell ill with diarrhea and vomiting, the desperate father turned to extreme measures. Following the advice of village elders, he pushed the red-hot tip of a burning stick into Shaher’s chest, a folk remedy to drain the “black blood” from his son.
“People said burn him in the body and it will be O.K.,” Mr. Hajaji said. “When you have no money, and your son is sick, you’ll believe anything.”
“The big countries say they are fighting each other in Yemen,” Mr. Hajaji said. “But it feels to us like they are fighting the poor people.”
Yemen’s economic crisis was not some unfortunate but unavoidable side effect of the fighting.
In 2016, the Saudi-backed Yemeni government transferred the operations of the central bank from the Houthi-controlled capital, Sana, to the southern city of Aden. The bank, whose policies are dictated by Saudi Arabia, a senior Western official said, started printing vast amounts of new money--at least 600 billion riyals, according to one bank official. The new money caused an inflationary spiral that eroded the value of any savings people had.
The bank also stopped paying salaries to civil servants in Houthi-controlled areas, where 80 percent of Yemenis live. With the government as the largest employer, hundreds of thousands of families in the north suddenly had no income.
At the Sabeen hospital in Sana, Dr. Huda Rajumi treats the country’s most severely malnourished children. But her own family is suffering, too, as she falls out of Yemen’s vanishing middle class.
In the past year, she has received only a single month’s salary. Her husband, a retired soldier, is no longer getting his pension, and Dr. Rajumi has started to skimp on everyday pleasures, like fruit, meat and taxi rides, to make ends meet.
“We get by because people help each other out,” she said. “But it’s getting hard.”
Economic warfare takes other forms, too. In a recent paper, Martha Mundy, a lecturer at the London School of Economics, analyzed coalition airstrikes in Yemen, finding that their attacks on bridges, factories, fishing boats and even fields suggested that they aimed to destroy food production and distribution in Houthi-controlled areas.
Saudi Arabia’s tight control over all air and sea movements into northern Yemen has effectively made the area a prison for those who live there. In September, the World Health Organization brokered the establishment of a humanitarian air bridge to allow the sickest Yemenis--cancer patients and others with life-threatening conditions--to fly to Egypt.
Among those on the waiting list is Maimoona Naji, a 16-year-old girl with a melon-size tumor on her left leg. At a hostel in Sana, her father, Ali Naji, said they had obtained visas and money to travel to India for emergency treatment. Their hopes soared in September when his daughter was told she would be on the first plane out of Sana once the airlift started.
But the agreement has stalled, blocked by the Yemeni government, according to the senior Western official. Maimoona and dozens of other patients have been left stranded, the clock ticking on their illnesses.
“First they told us ‘next week, next week,’” said Mr. Naji, shuffling through reams of documents as tears welled up in his eyes. “Then they said no. Where is the humanity in that? What did we do to deserve this?”
The Saudi coalition is not solely to blame for Yemen’s food crisis.
In Houthi-held areas, aid workers say, commanders level illegal taxes at checkpoints and frequently try to divert international relief aid to the families of soldiers, or to line their own pockets.
Despite the harrowing scenes of suffering in the north, some Yemenis are getting rich. Upmarket parts of Sana are enjoying a mini real estate boom, partly fueled by Yemeni migrants returned from Saudi Arabia, but also by newly enriched Houthi officials.
Local residents say they have seen Houthi officials from modest backgrounds driving around the city in Lexus four-wheel drives, or shopping in luxury stores, trailed by armed gunmen, to buy suits and perfumes.
Tensions reached a climax this summer when the head of the United Nations migration agency was forced to leave Sana after clashing with the Houthi administration.
In an interview, the Houthi vice foreign minister, Hussain al-Ezzi, denied reports of corruption, and insisted that tensions with the United Nations had been resolved.
“We don’t deny there have been some mistakes on our side,” he said. “We are working to improve them.”
Only two famines have been officially declared by the United Nations in the past 20 years, in Somalia and South Sudan. A United Nations-led assessment due in mid-November will determine how close Yemen is to becoming the third.
To stave it off, aid workers are not appealing for shipments of relief aid but for urgent measures to rescue the battered economy.
“This is an income famine,” said Lise Grande, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Yemen. “The key to stopping it is to ensure that people have enough money to buy what they need to survive.”
The priority should be to stabilize the falling currency, she said, and to ensure that traders and shipping companies can import the food that Yemenis need.
Above all, she added, “the fighting has to stop.”
One hope for Yemenis is that the international fallout from the death of the Saudi dissident, Jamal Khashoggi, which has damaged Prince Mohammed’s international standing, might force him to relent in his unyielding prosecution of the war.
Peter Salisbury, a Yemen specialist at Chatham House, said that was unlikely.
“I think the Saudis have learned what they can get away with in Yemen--that western tolerance for pretty bad behavior is quite high,” he said. “If the Khashoggi murder tells us anything, it’s just how reluctant people are to rein the Saudis in.”

Died at 99 Years Old, Prince Philip’s Leave a Good Memories
Prince Philip, the late husband to the UK's Queen Elizabeth II, will be laid to rest on Saturday next week, in a ceremony that will be colorful and steeped in tradition, but low key by royal standards.
Philip, who was officially the Duke of Edinburgh, died peacefully at Windsor Castle on Friday morning at the age of 99. He was the nation's longest-serving consort -- a term given to the spouse of a reigning monarch -- and they had been married for 73 years.
Harry, the Duke of Sussex, will attend his grandfather's funeral, but his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, won't be present, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said. The couple are living in California and a doctor had advised the duchess, who is pregnant, against traveling to the UK, the spokesperson said.
The couple gave an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired in March, in which they told their side of the story in their rift with the royal family, making explosive allegations against some of its members and the establishment.
Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, longtime consort to Queen Elizabeth II, dies
Philip's long-standing funeral plans had been adapted to respect certain Covid-19 restrictions, with all the usual elements that involve contact with the public removed. The College of Arms, which oversees many ceremonial aspects of the royal family's work, had earlier confirmed the duke would not lie in state anywhere accessible to the public, which could have seen thousands of people lining up to view his coffin.
Current Covid rules in England limit the number of people who can attend funerals to 30.
In a nod to the duke's preference for driving himself, without a chauffeur, his coffin will be carried by a Land Rover from Windsor Castle to St. George's Chapel, for the ceremony.
The procession will begin at 2:45 p.m. (9:45 a.m. ET) and will be led from Windsor Castle by a band of grenadier guards, along with several heads of military units. A Royal Navy piping party will pipe "The Still" whilst the Land Rover is stationed at the foot of the West Steps. There will be a gun salute and a national minute's silence at 3 p.m. ahead of the ceremony.
The duke's death has been marked in a somber fashion, as the royal household and UK government have asked the public not to gather or leave flowers at royal residences, with the country still under strict Covid-19 restrictions.
The Honourable Artillery Company fire a gun salute near London's Tower Bridge on April 10
But gun salutes were held across the nation, as batteries fired 41 rounds, at one round per minute, at Windsor Castle, the Tower of London in the capital and at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, among other locations. Australia, a Commonwealth nation, also paid its respects with a gun salute outside Parliament House in the capital, Canberra, on Saturday morning.
Tributes have flooded in from the UK and abroad for the duke, who had recently spent a month in two London hospitals, undergoing heart surgery and treatment for an infection, before returning in mid-March to Windsor Castle.
Paying tribute in a televised statement, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the duke had "earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world" and had lived by an ethic of service.
"Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the royal family and the monarchy so that it remains the institution indisputably vital to the balance of our national path. He was an environmentalist, and a champion of the natural world, long before it was fashionable," Johnson said.
But the duke was also a controversial figure. For many Britons, his defining characteristic was not his public service but his off-the-cuff and often offensive comments, including some that were undeniably racist.
The BBC said Friday it was receiving complaints about too much air time dedicated to the duke's death, after the public broadcaster canceled hours of its usual programming to make way for wall-to-wall coverage of Philip's life and death.
The BBC set up a dedicated feedback form within hours of the news from Buckingham Palace because of the high volume of complaints.
The special coverage had meant some of the UK's most-watched shows, including soap opera EastEnders and the final of cooking competition MasterChef, were taken off air.
People gather outside the gates of Buckingham Palace in London on Saturday.
But the nation is officially in eight days of mourning, as was announced on Friday, and there will be other tributes to the duke in public life.

But the nation is officially in eight days of mourning, as was announced on Friday, and there will be other tributes to the duke in public life.
Players in the English Premier League will wear black armbands, and "there will be a minute's silence before kick-off at all Premier League matches ... across the weekend," the organization has announced.
People take cellphone photos of a portrait of Prince Philip in a pub window near Windsor Castle on Saturday.
An online book of condolence was launched on the royal family's official website, as they joined the British government in asking that "members of the public consider making a donation to a charity instead of leaving floral tributes in memory of the Duke of Edinburgh."
The bells of London's Westminster Abbey, where Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth more than 70 years ago, rang 99 times on Friday evening in his honor, while the British flag -- the Union Jack -- is flying at half-staff on government buildings.
Tributes to a life of service
Harry and Meghan said his grandfather would be "greatly missed" in a statement following news of his death.
Posted on the front page of the couple's Archewell charity website, the message simply reads: "In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021. Thank you for your service ... you will be greatly missed."
The Death Gun Salute is fired by the 104th Regiment Royal Artillery at Cardiff Castle, in Wales on April 10.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said the "whole nation will be united in sadness at the passing of Prince Philip," adding he should be recognized "as a remarkable and steadfast support to the Queen over so many years" but also "celebrated in his own right as a man of foresight, determination and courage."
Tributes for the duke also flooded in from all over the world, including the Commonwealth nations of India, Australia and Canada. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had had a "distinguished career in the military and was at the forefront of many community service initiatives. May his soul rest in peace."
Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Philip "embodied a generation that we will never see again." Canada's Justin Trudeau said: "Prince Philip was a man of great purpose and conviction, who was motivated by a sense of duty to others. He will be fondly remembered as a constant in the life of our Queen."
US President Joe Biden said Philip had "gladly dedicated himself to the people of the UK, the Commonwealth, and to his family," and that his legacy would live on "not only through his family, but in all the charitable endeavors he shaped."
'Constant strength and guide'
Philip married the then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, following distinguished service in the Royal Navy during World War II. Together, they had four children -- Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward -- eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
When Elizabeth ascended the throne in February 1952, on the death of her father, George VI, Philip's lifetime of service as royal consort began.
Over the decades, Philip often accompanied the Queen on royal engagements, and conducted thousands of his own solo appearances. He once referred to himself as "the world's most experienced plaque unveiler," while the Queen lauded him as her "constant strength and guide."
Philip continued making public appearances well into his 90s, retiring only in August 2017.
He was seen in public only infrequently from that point, notably at the Windsor Castle wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May 2018, and at the nuptials for Princess Eugenie in October 2018 and for Princess Beatrice in July 2020.

5, 6, 15, 16, 42 for the year-end meme, please and thanks!
Ask me stuff about my year.
5. Post your favorite selfie.
Idk why I like it so much, haha. It looks super artistic and poised, and it really wasn’t. I was just checking my hair while drinking bubble tea.
6. If you traveled, where did you go?
Oh god.
January: Honolulu for work, Houston
February: Bangalore (I was living there at the time) Goa, Jodhpur…and then I got laid off and Rex was giving, so I was like you know what? Let’s just backpack around so I can not think about what is going to happen to me, an immigrant worker, now we can spend some quality time together since we’ve never lived in the same country the entire time we’ve been together!
March: Jaipur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Delhi, Agra (this was the Taj), Hampi
April: In a wild fit of laid off anxiety, I decide that visiting friends I never get to see is a good idea, and I buy tickets to Vienna for two weeks. While I’m there, I hop over to Bratislava because my friend is married to a dude she never gets to see, and she was like…so can you just like, leave for Easter? (I was like yeah sure whatever, and this is how I ended up in Slovakia on Easter Sunday.)
May: Austin for my sister’s graduation, New Orleans with Rex so he could finally meet friends like @sora2522 and @neonjudas and @autumnstatic and @lovejustlied and @sugarandbourbon-blog
June: Toronto because I ended up temporarily homeless because of visa bullshit + flatmate bullshit + insufficient paperwork for fucking taxes bullshit, and Rex was like, why don’t I just fly you here and take care of you which I would normally say no to, but joblessness + homelessness + some girl almost fighting me for her deposit money that wasn’t even mine to give her was like, yep, I’m done. Also I’d been sick for about 3 months at this point because I honestly just think my immune system was fucked.
July: Singapore (I finally was able to move, and the visa went through, and asdfghjkl)
August: Las Vegas for the Star Trek Convention, in part because TNG randomly really helped me get through the layoff. Also because I have a cousin who lives out there with her youngest, and I haven’t seen them in like YEARS…since my dad’s funeral maybe?
October: Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Tao?), to see my friend who got laid off along with me, except he was in Pakistan and I was in India, so there was like, no way we were going to see each other lol. And then he ended up moving to Toronto a couple months ago, so he and Rex now go sweater shopping together hahaha.
November: Yangon to see a friend I haven’t seen since we were drinking buddies in Beijing - she moved back to Belgium, and I moved to India. She was also training for a marathon, so I went to train with her for that one weekend. My mom wanted to see the northern lights while her “knees were still working” (she is very conscious about her age lol), so I flew home, and we spent Thanksgiving in Fairbanks, Alaska, which is the first time I have celebrated Thanksgiving in the US in like three years. I went to New Orleans to see the above-mentioned people.
My mother and I are going to the Philippines together on the 26th to see our family there. So that’ll be Manila and Coron.
15. Which new ship/fandom has taken over a lot of your time, attention, and tears?
I think Star Trek has been an overarching theme of the year hahaha. The layoff really made me want warm, fuzzy bright things, and so I guess instead of reaching for DS9 like I normally do, I reached for TNG? Except TNG is a hot, beautiful mess, so I guess I spent a lot of energy headcanoning around things.
Uh, but let’s see, I’m looking at @cosmic-llin and @leyenn for (1) planting Deanna/Will/Beverly seeds in my head and then (2) making me challenge myself as a writer to see if I could write a functional three-person romantic relationship. Which then grew into a giant wlw/poly rewrite of half the Trek universe. Oh my god.
And then I looked up all of this stuff about being poly and spoke to my poly friends, and it ended up being really educational, and I’m now reading a ton of stuff with poly relationships in them because I am intrigued and in the Ever Growing Original Novel Series I am writing, I am curious to see if I can fit one in.
Anyway, the point is that I was writing for myself again, which was something I think I had lost even during the job I had before this one? Tech is crazy, and I was crazy busy, and the company was really nice but also a lot like walking on hot coals. Like you want to do it because everyone else is doing it, but it’s not so healthy.
Tears: Philippa Georgiou aka my mom
No tears for these fandoms but I reached for them because they didn’t make me cry: B99, Bob’s Burgers, Insecure
16. What food did you try for the first time?
Salted egg yolk chips/fish skins, popiah, laal maas, asam laksa…oh, I guess I had real schnitzel for the first time too.
42. What are you most proud of accomplishing?
Getting through this dumpster fire of a year! Seriously. Uh. Let’s see. Writing like 60k words in the back half of the year NOT FOR WORK and submitting my application for a television production program. I’ll be signing that acceptance paperwork next week so that I can hopefully get out of tech and into television/something I like a little more. It’s part-time and here in Singapore, so I can work while I get trained.

"The hypothesis is that nicotine attaches to cell receptors used by the coronavirus and thus prevents the virus from attaching," says Professor Jean-Pierre Changeux from the Institut Pasteur and the Collège de France. Thus, the coronavirus cannot penetrate the cells and spread in the organism. Nevertheless, people should not buy cigarettes now, because smoking endangers the health, the scientists warn.

Could Little Nellie Cordell Really Read Minds?
Nellie Cordell was just nine years old when the Cincinnati Post called her the “Kentucky Wonder Child.” She had come to Cincinnati in 1921 with her father, an out-of-work coal miner, at the urging of a traveling salesman, who was certain she had a career in vaudeville.
From the time she was three, folks around Middlesboro, Kentucky claimed that Nellie could read minds “the way other people read books.” The Lexington Leader [21 August 1921] reported:
“According to her father, Nellie first revealed the possession of this power when she was about 3 years of age. He states that at a very early age, she would voluntarily tell him where he was going when he would leave home. This seemed to be so extraordinary, and as she was always correct in her forecast, it excited the wonder of his wife and himself. As she has grown older, this talent has intensified, until now Mr. Cordell says her skill has developed until she is a junior ‘girl with a thousand eyes.’”
Elmer Cordell and his daughter took a room at the Palace (now Cincinnatian) Hotel and met there with theatrical agents and a reporter from the Cincinnati Post, who ran Nellie through several tests.
First, he asked Nellie how old he was. The reporter whispered this information into Elmer’s ear, and Elmer asked Nellie, who immediately replied that the reporter was 38. The reporter then wrote two numbers, 189 and 265 on a piece of paper. Nellie’s father asked her to add the numbers [Cincinnati Post 26 September 1921]:
“Nellie did not see the figures. In fact, having been taken to the room she and her father occupied, she threw herself on the bed and buried her face in a pillow as she called off the addition, 454, correctly.”
The reporter then thought of a hat and a cigar, and Nellie immediately guessed what he was thinking about. Reporters for the Cincinnati Post and the Kentucky papers were convinced there was no trickery possible.
It appears, however, that the theatrical agents were less impressed. Although there are several newspaper reports about Nellie’s public mind-reading demonstrations, all took place in small towns and few involve theaters. She wowed them at the Manchester, Kentucky, court house in May 1922, and seems to have entertained a few schools and women’s clubs in the Bluegrass region. Her biggest professional stage seems to have been Stout’s Theater in Danville.
There were a lot of vaudeville mind-readers in the early 1920s, and Nellie faced some stiff competition. Hope Eden, billed as the “youngest mind reader in the world,” earned enough to buy an airplane to fly to her gigs. Princess Wah-Let-Ka, an American Indian mind-reader; the tuxedo-clad Mercedes; and Carl Harmon, the “greatest mind-reader in the world” and known as “India’s White Mahatma;” packed them into the bigger theaters. There was even a younger competitor as Boston’s Thelma wells, only 7, grabbed some 1921 headlines when she read the mind of Massachusetts Governor Channing Cox.
By 1930, Nellie was out of the mind-reading business, married at 18, living with her parents in Northside and working at Powel Crosley’s radio factory. Nellie’s husband, David Hoyle Griffin, was a foreman for a building contractor. The next year, Nellie gave birth to her only child, Doris Jean. She, Hoyle and the baby moved into their own house on Martha Street, where Northside pushes into the hills topped by Mount Airy Forest and later around the corner to a house on Kirby.
It was not a happy home. Hoyle and Nellie argued, a lot, police said. Nellie took her daughter and moved back home to Mom and Dad.
Hoyle shot himself in the heart and died on 23 May 1939. It was his third suicide attempt. A month earlier, Hoyle had attempted to asphyxiate himself by filling the house with gas, but a spark from the refrigerator motor ignited an explosion. Hoyle, lying in bed, was unharmed though the house was significantly damaged. Less than a week later, he was rushed to General Hospital after drinking acid. The Cincinnati Enquirer [23 May 1939] reported:
“One of several notes left by Griffin directed that his body be taken to Miller’s Funeral Home, Northside. Another asked that his daughter be placed in a home.”
That might have happened. Doris Jean is not living with Nellie in the 1940 census. She’s not living with her grandparents, either.
Nellie got a job as a waitress at Wiggins Tavern downtown and was promoted to hostess. She remarried, to Harry Sickman, who ran Burton’s Food Shop on Jefferson Avenue in Corryville.
Nellie was only 52 when she died in 1964. Although she was living out on Bridgetown Road near the Neumann Golf Course, requiem high mass for her funeral was said at St. Boniface Church in her old neighborhood, Northside. She left behind her husband, her daughter, and two grandchildren.

We May Have Changed Names Of Roads, But The Mumbai Derby Was Proof Of Our Colonial Hangover
Horses, gambling, fashion and the class divide at my first Derby.
Until yesterday I had always pronounced derby as duh-bee. It's daa-bee. I learned the hard way. At an actual Derby – The Mumbai Derby. I also learned how much of a ganwaar I am inspite of being a city girl.
Who says Indians don’t wear fancy hats and designer dresses to the Derby? Image source: hautekutir.com

The first struggle, as it would be with almost any girl, was wardrobe. The only idea I had about what to wear at the races was via pictures of the Ascot. Was it de rigueur to wear that strange headgear and designer outfits to the Derby? My schizophrenic wardrobe, which is one-part Jabong and two-parts Lokhandwala market, had nothing to match that. And the only headgear I own is a freebie cap that I once got at an event.
I opted for a dress – something not too showy, but showy as well. You know, for sex appeal. And heels. You can't go wrong with a dress and heels.
You can.

The Mahalaxmi Race Course was bathed with sunlight, from a 12 PM 'fuck your freckles' sun. The generous exposure of my dress allowed my skin to be roasted to a medium rare after 4 hours. This was why the hats were necessary. But the hats that were being sported were in no way capable of battling the sun – a tuft of fur so soft it was dancing in the air perched on top of someone’s head… A half veil pulled down the face like a widow at a funeral… A single long feather poking out of the head. No, not a fedora, a feather just tucked into the hair and spread out like a peacock in the rain! And there were men in suits. And dapper sunglasses. And (I have to assume) ball sweat! Partly from the heat, partly from the money lost.

Clubs like these have always reminded me of clubs back home in Kolkata. Almost all the clubs there have a strong colonial hangover. Restaurants with `Ayas and servants not allowed’ boards. Caddies lugging golf kits behind members. My friend told me that in Kolkata’s Royal Calcutta Golf Club there is a tradition of the horse caretakers calling the horse trainers ‘maalik’. Even the `Powder Room’ (not ‘Toilet’ mind you) that I went to, had a version of a lady-in-waiting. For what? Tying the laces to my corset under my Victorian gown? I wish. (I wish corsets were still in actually) Clearly not a lot has changed since the British Raj. Every time I’m in these clubs I have a strange ringing in my ears that goes “teen guna lagaan!”
Experts gauge horses by their gait

Before the first race started my friend took me to this little amphitheatre where the horses are paraded before going on to the race course. This, to my knowledge, was the pageant equivalent of the swimsuit round, talent round, and Q and A, all put together. This was where the horses strutted their stuff. The horses were beautiful, no doubt, but what the hell did I know. I only had the Juhu beach counterparts to compare them to. But the regulars were experts at this; they could gauge where a horse would place by just looking at their gait, sometimes even their last name (Dewans come second).
Oh, and about the names. They had some of the weirdest names ever – Strong Rumours, Cloudy Sticks, Rambo Asharfi! My friend explained how horse nomenclature was quite a science. “You take the first name of the father and the last name of the mother, or something like that,” he says. “So if the father is Strong Winds and the mother is Flying Rumours, you get baby Strong Rumours!” Why is the father's name first, I just had to ask. “We'll cross that bridge when we get there, Smriti,” my friend smiled. The dress was working. Anyway... If the horse's parents were thoroughbreds, the chances of the horse placing were high. The race course is one place where name and pedigree really matters.
A game of numbers and names

TBH I'm not the gambling kind. How do you stake your hard earned money on the capabilities of a horse? Or cards? Or even the lottery? I keep my money where it's safest. In the bank. So what if I can't touch it till the government lifts withdrawal limits. The illusion of it keeps me calm. Carrying on... I have always been unlucky at gambling. I’m the one who loses at every Diwali card game so I’ve just stopped playing. So when my friend suggested we bet on a horse, just for fun, I guffawed. Me? Gamble money? Yeah right!
It’s a game of numbers and probability. The regulars had the math all figured; they bet on the odds, and went for the big game only in the big races. They knew the horses well, the riders and their handicaps. They played safe, mostly. But even to ‘play safe’ you needed money, which I did not have. Not at the start of a month when you get the text of your salary being credited, followed by a series of messages where your EMIs and bills have been debited. That’s the math that keeps my wallet deep in the folds of my purse. That’s the math that kept me from getting the Chicken Shawarma being sold at the stall for Rs. 380 (Why? Because the chicken was thoroughbred?) and instead opt for the Kheema Pattice that suited my aukaat more. I, for sure, couldn’t afford to pay ‘teen guna lagan’ for a Chicken Shawarma.
Kheema Pattice @ Rs. 80!

I still accompanied him to the ticketing booth because he wanted to place a small bet. And for a moment I felt like I was in a subzi mandi in suits. '50k on Cezzane!' A gentleman, who could’ve passed off as the complete man Raymond endorses, was shouting at a booth like an auto driver screaming for his desi tharra outside a theka on NH 10. 50k! When so much money exchanges hands it makes me nervous! I really don’t know if demonetization helped or not, but I could sniff black money exchanging hands. The booths were where you could feel the pulse of money, like standing in the middle of the trading floor of a stock exchange. You could smell the money, hear the urgency, inhale the greed for more… It was intoxicating…
I pulled my wallet and scooped out a new crisp Rs. 2000 note that I had stood in queue for the day before. ‘I want to place a bet’ I told my friend. He raised his eyebrow, “Are you sure? Go for 500 bucks or something.” I was feeling bold. People were placing 50k, I could afford two measly grand at least… I did okay, for my age… I could bet 2k without thinking twenty times… I had to raise my aukaat God dammit!
Money talks in booths

“No!” I spat out, a little too impatiently, to my friend. “Place it on…” my eyes hovered on the board... “Rider in the Storm” My friend was impressed, “What? You think it’s a thoroughbred or something?” He checked in the race booklet we had bought outside for 30 bucks. It wasn’t. Riders in the Storm was my favourite song. “I have a feeling about it…” I told my friend. “Ooh! You’re turning into an expert I see… Gambler’s instinct and all…” I waved it off with a subtle gesture of my hand. I saw a hatted girl do that, not more than 5 minutes ago.
We headed to the tracks outside. You could feel the anticipation in the air. It was like Lakme Fashion Week meets Eden Gardens at a KKR match. The cheering, the excitement. People were crowding around the bamboo fences. The screen up front showed us the horses lining up at the opposite end of the ground. They would pass us towards the end of the race. I was confused. I didn’t even know which my horse was. “Which one is mine?” I poked my friend in the ribs. “How do I know? YOU’RE the expert na?”
Shit. Horseshit.
They were off. Some 7-8 horses took off the moment their gates flung open. One brown thing clearly had a head start. He was at least a couple of feet ahead of the rest. My heart raced. Maybe this was my Rider in the Storm! I could be going back with double my money! Screw all those Diwali nights, this time I was gonna get lucky!
It's like Fashion Week at the Indian Derby! Image source: topnews.in
And the brown one won! The crowd erupted in a mix of cheer and ‘fuck yous’. I wasn’t sure which category I belonged to. I asked a girl next to me, “Where did Rider in the Storm place?” She squinted at the screen, “Rank 7, I think”. What? Second to last! How was he a rider in any sort of storm when he couldn’t even place in a race! Could you sue horse namers?
I was fuming. My friend patted my shoulder, “Chill ya… It was just two thousand bucks…” I was too grouchy for sympathy. I excused myself to go the ‘Powder Room’.
It was empty. Except for the woman in waiting. She seemed happy. “Kya madumb? Bet lagaya kya?” I nodded gravely. She understood. “Oh jeeta nahi” Why was she so cheerful? “Apne bhi bet lagaya tha kya?” She nodded excitedly. “Haan… Cezanne pe… 500 ka lagaya tha ab 1500 milega!” What? It must be dumb luck. Or could it be that she was a smarter gambler than me?
“Cezanne pe kyun?” I couldn’t hold my curiosity.
“Breeding hai na. Aur uspe odds bhi kam tha…” She explained to me like the Raymond man was explaining to his friend. I looked at madumb self in the mirror behind her and let out a sigh. For all our classist behavior, there was lots we could learn from the masses.

Getting into a car accident with a 16-year-old uninsured driver?
I live in San Diego, California. I recently got into a car accident with a 16-year-old uninsured driver, who was using his mother's car at the time and had two underaged passengers. I was in a business area (25 MPH) and I was switching lanes into the right lane. I had my right hand blinker on and was in the process of switching lanes. The 16-year-old driver was speeding and quickly hit my front right end. I had a witness - who reported two things - with the police, he reported that the 16-year-old tried to avoid me by getting into the bike lane, but then reported with my insurance company that the 16-year-old ran straight into my car at 50 MPH. They are currently finding me 80% at fault because of the police report. The police report was obviously misrepresented. What steps can I take to fix this?""

Keep until expires or cancel car insurance?
My car has broken down for the last time. It is very old (1998) and very high mileage. I am deciding to sell it for parts and what I can get rather than sink any more money into it. Point of negative returns. I will be going carless for some time, taking the bus and using a car share program. That is just background though. Hoping to save the money, pay off other things and raise credit score to possibly qualify for a brand new one in the future. My question is about the auto insurance. I just renewed at the beginning of the year. So I have about 4 months left before the policy is done. I am making monthly payments. If I cancel now, will I still owe them for the entire policy amount - (can they come after me for it?) Or does it look better (when I go to get insurance in the future) that I keep paying on the policy until it expires in a few month (just not renew at that time). I don't want to spend money needlessly. However, I also want the best (least expensive) insurance rates when I need it in the future, and a good track record. Can anyone (especially if you are in the insurance industry) give me the straight scoop? Thanks and much appreciated.""

When does health insurance expire when you move out of state?
Suppose you have health insurance in New York, and you plan to move to California. Before the actual move, you drive a vehicle across country, get a California license, register your vehicle, and register to vote. Then you fly back to New York for four months. You go to the doctor, and your NY insurance pays up. But then you get a letter from the insurance company, sent to the CA address but forwarded to NY, saying they heard you'd moved, so your insurance will be cancelled. You write back, telling them their information is premature, and that you'll change insurance when you complete the move. After four months, you complete the move to CA, and two days after your arrival, you start feeling woozy -- feverish with occasional headaches -- requiring bed rest and lots of fluids. If this doesn't clear up in a day or two, you'll want to see a doctor. Will you be covered by the NY insurance, given that you haven't had time yet to get CA insurance?""

Insurance with US license. Loophole or stupidity?
I am an 18 year old british citizen. I lived in the US for 6-7 years and got a license at the age of 16. I am now in the process of getting car insurance. and am wondering if this 'loophole' is technically legal. I can drive on my US license for up to 12 months, during that 12 months I can get a UK prov. license. take the driving lessons and do the theory/test to get my full UK license. while shopping around last night I noticed a website saying 'provisional insurance is cheap, but expect it to go up once you pass your test.' Now, I understand the reason why it's cheaper is due to the fact that you probably wouldn't be driving as much, and you need a 'known' driver with you in the car while you're driving. However, couldn't I be considered my own driver? If I have a provisional license would I not be eligable for provisional license insurance? is this legal? or am I just being a hopeful idiot?""

Tech: Prince Philip turns 97 on Sunday — here's the best photo from every year of his royal career
Prince Philip turns 97 on Sunday, more than a year after retiring from public life. These are the best photos from every year of his royal career.
Prince Philip turns 97 on Sunday — and it's been over a year since he announced his official retirement from public service.
According to The Telegraph, the Duke of Edinburgh has carried out 22,219 solo engagements and 637 solo visits overseas since he left active military service in 1952.
In retirement, the Duke is reportedly enjoying more leisure time at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk — he is an avid carriage driver and enjoys oil painting.
His Royal Highness' career will be remembered equally for his sharp wit as he will be for his gaffes, which have often left the nation laughing or reeling.
The Prince's prolonged service has won him support from both sides of Parliament — Jeremy Corbyn applauded his "clear sense of public duty" and Theresa May praised his "steadfast support" to the Queen.
Philip's lengthy career, marked by hundreds of visits to far-flung corners of the British Empire, has unsurprisingly produced some remarkable royal photography.
As he turns 97, here are the best images from each of his years as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh:
1947: Prince Philip began his journey as a British Royal when he married into the country's royal family after a five-month engagement to his distant cousin, Elizabeth. He was 26.
1948: The couple had their first child, Prince Charles, in 1948. In this picture, he sleeps in the arms of his mother, then Princess Elizabeth, after his Christening at Buckingham Palace.
1949: Philip spent many of his younger years in the Royal Navy meaning family time was precious. He spent much of 1949 stationed in Malta as the first lieutenant of the destroyer HMS Checkers, the lead ship of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean Fleet.
1950: Two years after the birth of Prince Charles, Elizabeth and Philip gave birth to their second child, Princess Anne.
1951: The family's first home was Clarence House, located just a stone's throw away from Buckingham Palace in central London. The family can be seen playing in its gardens in this photo.
1952: Despite his active naval career ending in 1951, he was promoted to commander of the Royal Navy in 1952.

1953: During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Philip bowed to his while while more than 27 million people in Britain watched on television.

1954: This photo shows the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh during an official visit to HAMS Australia, flagship of the Australian Navy. The Royal couple went aboard during their visit to Cairns, Queensland.
1955: Throughout his career, he has been involved with more than 780 organisations and been a loyal supporter of his wife, attending events around the world with her for more than 60 years.
1956: In 1956, the royal founded the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. The scheme is still running 61 years later and aims to instill within young people a "sense of responsibility to themselves and their communities," by encouraging them to take part in charity work and outdoor activities.
1957: It wasn't until 1957 that Philip was formerly made a British prince. That same year, he completed a round the world tour aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. Here he is feeding penguins during a visit to the Antarctic.
1958: Here, Prince Philip is handing a pen back to Levi Milley after signing an autograph. Milley was one of 12 men who survived nearly a week trapped in a mine in SpringHill, Nova Scotia in 1958.
1959: Philip and Elizabeth's children grew up meeting some of the world's most powerful leaders. President Eisenhower visited Balmoral Castle in 1959, where he was photographed patting Princess Anne on the shoulder as her father looked on proudly.
1960: Prince Andrew, the couple's third child, was born in 1960. In this photo, he laughs as he holds hands with his father, Prince Philip, and his sister, Princess Anne, during their summer holiday at Balmoral Castle.
1961: The royal couple made their first visit to the Taj Mahal in India in January 1961. He also became UK President of the World Wildlife Fund the same year.
1962: The Royals have been a regular fixture at Ascot, one of the biggest events in Britain's horse racing calendar.
1963: In 1963, the couple went on a three-month tour of Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand.
1964: People often don't realize that the royal is also a qualified pilot, having racked up nearly 6,000 flying hours over the past five decades. He's also the patron of the Guild of Air Pilots.
1965: Philip attended the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill, along with fellow British royals and dignitaries from overseas.
1966: The Queen and her husband visited St. Lucia in 1966. This was also the year he famously proclaimed "British women can't cook."
Source: The Telegraph
1967: The following year, he made an equally dubious gaffe. When asked whether he would like to visit the Soviet Union, he replied: "I would like to go to Russia very much, although the bastards murdered half my family." This is a reference to his German heritage.
1968: Britain celebrated the 50th anniversary of the formation of the RA Fin style. Here, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip ride past a number of Bloodhound missiles on display during their visit to the Royal Air Force Base at Abington, England.
1969: Prince Philip joined a patient's group therapy session when he visited the National Addiction and Research Institute in Chelsea, London. The prince spent 20 minutes with the patients discussing their problems.
1970: Queen Elizabeth II read her speech in the House of Lords alongside her husband for the State Opening of Parliament in 1970.
1971: The late Sir Roger Moore met the Duke of Edinburgh at an auction dinner in aid of the Variety Club of Great Britain, at the Savoy Hotel in 1971.
1972: In 1972, Philip and Elizabeth travelled to France and took part in remembrance services.
1973: Prince Philip talked to his wife before the new Sydney Opera House complex. Left is Frank Barnes., General Manager of the Opera House and right is Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of New South Wales.
1974: He received a traditional Maori welcome when he arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand, to open the 10th Commonwealth Games. In this ancient Maori challenge, the feather is thrown at the feet of the Duke, with the chant, "do you come as friend or foe," by picking up the feather the Duke was accepted and welcomed.
1975: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are greeted by Emperor Hirohito of Japan at the entrance of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on May 7, 1975.
1976: The royal couple laughed as the young girl stood next to them was reluctant to hand over a bouquet of flowers during their royal visit to Luxembourg.
1977: This photo captures Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth waving at a low-flying Concorde as it passed the Royal Yacht Britannia near Barbados. The iconic passenger jet could fly faster than the speed of sound but made its last flight in 2003 due to soaring costs.
1978: Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were followed by their sons Prince Andrew, left, and Prince Edward, as they entered the stadium before the start of the 11th Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada.
1979: This family photo was taken in the ground of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Elizabeth and Philip were joined by their sons (l-r) Prince Andrew, Prince Charles, and Prince Edward.
1980: The Royals made a historic visit to meet Pope John Paul II in the Vatican in October 1980. It was the first state visit to the Vatican by a British monarch.
1981: Philip's first son, Prince Charles, married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. An estimated 750 million people watched the ceremony worldwide. Below is the official wedding portrait. Philip can be seen standing next to Diana.
1982: The Queen looked surprised after her husband, Prince Philip, pointed that they should be going another way as they drove through the crowd of athletes and officials during the Closing Ceremony of the 12th Commonwealth Games. The crowd forced them to make another lap around the stadium.
1983: The couple has met every sitting US president — bar Lyndon B. Johnson — since Elizabeth ascended to the throne. Here they're pictured with former President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan in San Francisco.
1984: The Royal family, along with Lord Spencer, attended Prince Harry's Christening in December 1984.
1985: The Queen, Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales, the Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal, Princes William and Harry, and the Earl of Wessex at the Trooping the Colour.
1986: The couple paid a state visit to China, making the Queen the first British monarch to ever do so.
1987: Philip held a news conference in Washington D.C. in May 1987, to announce a World Wildlife Fund Campaign to end illegal wildlife trade. The global organisation has also named an award after him — The Duke of Edinburgh Conservation Award — which recognizes "highly meritorious contributions to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources."
1988: Prince Philip was greeted by children of the British School in Holland. He was visiting the Netherlands for the celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the Glorious Revolution, when Prince William III of Holland ousted King James II from the English family.
1989: Philip was greeted by a worshipper at St. Mary's Cathedral in Kuala Lumpur after he stepped in for the queen who was unable to attend the service because of a chill. In the background is a plaque in honour of the royal couple.
1990: The prince had the honour of delivering the Rafael M. Salas Lecture at the United Nations' headquarters in New York. Named in honour of Mrs. Salas' — pictured below— late husband, Rafael was the first head of the United Nations Population Fund.
1991: President George H. Bush escorted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on the field at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, before the Orioles played the Oakland A's. This was the first baseball game the monarch had ever watched.
1992: Here, Prince Philip emerges from the channel tunnel near Calais, France, after becoming the first member of the royal family to use the rail line connecting England and France — one year before it welcomed its first fare-paying passenger.
1993: The Duke of Edinburgh chats with Diana, Princess of Wales, at a banquet he is hosting in honour of the Queen, at the Dorchester Hotel, London.
1994: This was the first ever visit to Israel by a member of the royal family. Philip flew to the country to participate in a ceremony honouring his mother for saving Greek Jews during WWII. In this photo, Prince Philip jokes with British veterans.
1995: Queen Elizabeth II looks up toward the sky as Prince Philip, left, and Prince Charles look on during memorial services to mark the 50th anniversary of VJ Day in London on August 19.
1996: Prince Philip caused outrage across the country on December 18, particularly in Dublin, the scene of that year's primary school massacre, when he suggested that cricket bats were potentially just as dangerous as guns.
1997: Philip and his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, walk through a sea of flowers left by the public outside Buckingham Palace in memory of Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in Paris in August that year.
1998: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip greet Tony Blair and his wife Cherie at Buckingham Palace in London on the second day of the Asia-Europe meeting. The three days of meetings were dominated by discussions on how the Asian economic crisis was being handled.
1999: The Queen and her husband were welcomed to Ghana by the sound of drums and reggae music, where they met the 13 regional chiefs and eight Queen Mothers of Ghana.
2000: Prince Philip bids farewell to Former President Nelson Mandela. Prince Philip and Prince Edward went to see young offenders enrolled in rehabilitation programs in South Africa.
2001: Jordan's Queen Rania smiled with Prince Philip during arrival ceremonies in Windsor. The King and Queen of Jordan were on an official State Visit to England at the time.
2002: A year of glorious highs and sad lows — The Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee, it was also the year the Queen Mother passed away.
2003: Then-US President George W. Bush visited Britain with his wife Barbara in 2003. The couple can be seen walking with the royals along the west terrace of Buckingham Palace.
2004: A memorial fountain dedicated to the late Princess Diana was unveiled in Hyde Park, London. The House of Windsor buried the hatchet with the aristocratic family of Diana earlier that week, almost seven years after her brother savaged the royals in his funeral eulogy.
2005: A National Service of Remembrance was held for the Victims of the London Bombings at St. Paul's Cathedral in central London. The service, where candles were lit to represent the four sites in London bombed on July 7, was also attended by Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair.
2006: Prince Philip visited the Queen's Royal Hussars in Basra. He told the troops that most people in Britain had "a great deal of sympathy for those of you at the sharp end who are trying to do your best to make life civilized and tolerable for the locals."
2007: Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth celebrated their diamond (60th) wedding anniversary. They marked the occasion with a special thanksgiving service held at Westminster Abbey.
2008: Prince Philip and France's then-first lady Carla Bruni laughed as they stood with Queen Elizabeth and French President Nicolas Sarkozy during a review of the Guard of Honour at Windsor Castle in Windsor.
2009: Prince Philip speaks to well-wishers during his visit with Queen Elizabeth to Newcastle, northern England.
2010: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attended the ninth inauguration of the General Synod at Westminster Abbey, with the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
2011: Prince Philip has spent his life supporting veterans and the armed forces. Here, he talks with soldiers and their relatives of the 2 Close Support Battalion RE ME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) after the Operation Herrick Medal Parade at the Saint Barbara's Barracks in undefined, Lower Saxony. Some 150 soldiers were awarded for their deployment in Afghanistan.
2012: This brilliant photo captures Philip, Elizabeth, and Charles laughing as they watch the Braemer Gathering in Scotland as competitors participated in a sack race.
2013: Prince Philip was presented with New Zealand's highest honour, the Order of New Zealand, by his wife, Elizabeth, at Buckingham Palace in London. He also celebrated his 92nd birthday that year.
2014: The couple laughed after bidding farewell to the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina at Windsor Castle. The Irish President and his wife Sabina left Windsor at the end of a four day State Visit to Britain, during which they stayed at the castle as guests of her majesty.
2015: Philip played a vital role in saving Britain's engineering sector in the 1970s by creating a national engineering academy. He told the BBC in 2015 that after WWII, Britain was "completely skint — it seemed to me that the only way we were going to recover was through engineering."

2016: The Duke of Edinburgh Award celebrated its 60 anniversary in 2016 — arguably the most successful venture of any current royal. The Queen also celebrated her 90th birthday in style with the Patron's Lunch street party, pictured below.
Source: The Telegraph
2017: After 65 years of public service, the prince retired from public life. Public appearances had become increasingly rare — but here he attends the annual garden party at the Palace of Hilarity's in Edinburgh.
2018: Though officially retired, Prince Philip has made appearances at a number of events in the past year. His grandson Prince Harry's wedding, for instance, was not something he was likely to miss.
Charles Clark contributed to an earlier version of this story.

To what extent can a Vietnamese woman showcase her physical strength? A recent video in March answered the question for us. Female soldiers from Vietnam’s First Special Force Group can smash bricks, bend iron spears with their necks and take sledgehammers to the stomach.
If war-time heroines are ever forgotten, these ladies are right here to remind you not to mess around with Vietnamese women.
2. The first all-female flight crew
While Air India’s all-female crew marked history on March 6 by flying around the world, Vietnamese female pilots are not too far behind. On February 16, 2016, the country’s first all-female crew successfully landed in Saigon from Quy Nhon, completing a nearly 1,300km journey.
Vietnam Airlines now has 10 female pilots, two of whom are captains. The crew included Huynh Ly Dong Phuong, the first female captain in Vietnam, together with her assistant captain Nguyen Thi Ngoc Bich and four flight attendants.

3. Mama squirrel
Like their physical strength, Vietnamese women’s love can be all-encompassing, even if it’s for squirrels.
Nguyen Thi Lieu has spent almost two decades feeding hungry, adorable squirrels in Tao Dan Park, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. From a few bananas, Lieu now feeds them up to 10kg a day.
"I will continue doing this until my health doesn't allow me to," she said.
4. The puppy fairy
At Nguyen Ngoc My’s tiny house in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, dogs eat first, humans eat second. My has been living with over 90 abandoned dogs for 22 years.
45-year-old My said she has an unexplainable love for abandoned dogs. Every day, she goes out and buys up to 13kg of rice for her dogs. Sometimes, she spends thousands of dollars on veterinary bills when they get sick.
My has even given up her sewing business to care for the dogs. Soon, she will be moving to the suburbs and a bigger house with a whole floor for her lucky dogs to enjoy.
5. The fetus burier
Ten years ago, Tran Thi Lanh, a 45-year-old woman from Ha Tinh Province, spotted a baby's glove next to a small tomb beside a rice field. The next day, the tomb had been dug up by some unknown animal, and the image haunted her.
Lanh decided to dedicate her life to giving dead infants she finds at hospitals, clinics and even rice fields a proper burial. She takes them home, bathes them, puts them in small coffins and performs proper funeral rituals.
“Fetuses are also humans. I have to do something to console the unlucky ones,” Lanh said, looking at the dozens of tombs in a 150-square-meter cemetery.

6. Baby before cancer
In early 2016, Dau Thi Huyen Tram, a 25-year-old policewoman from Ha Tinh Province, was diagnosed with end stage lung cancer. At the time, she was bearing a 19-week old baby.
Local doctors suggested an abortion for her own safety, but Tram refused chemotherapy, insisting that her baby must live and grow up healthy. Tram gave birth to a 1.5kg baby on July 10 and surrendered to her cancer only 17 days later.

7. Tin Soldier’s Mom
In July 2006, an infant was abandoned in a garden in Quang Nam Province. Animals had bitten his genitals off and he was bleeding from the leg. 72 hours later, the baby was taken to a local hospital where the doctors named him Thien Nhan.
When Nhan’s story hit local media with his nickname “Little Tin Soldier”, Tran Mai Anh, a managing editor of Heritage Magazine, decided to adopt him and promised to cure him of his brutal injuries. For the past ten years, Mai Anh has been taking her son for endless surgeries in Germany, U.S., Italy and Singapore with the help of charitable donations.
The Little Tin Soldier is now 11 years old, healthy and active with his two brothers.
