Hey gang, US Federal employee here. Y'all have been amazing getting the word out and pushing back, and now's your time to shine.
The powers that be are pushing for a return to office (violating multiple policies and contracts), and at my place of employment the union has currently advised doing what we're told. They're fighting back, but it will probably not be in time to stop the forced return on March 10th.
Everyone who is teleworking, provided they live within 50 miles or less, must come to the office every single day. There's reasons listed, but we know the real reason is to compel people to quit.
There is not physical space in my office building for every telework employee to be in every single day - that's why we have 1 day a week for it. Cubicles are occupied by multiple people, and some of those people are on the same shift. The US's public transit system is a punchline, but it's also a tool here - the only viable way for people to reach this location is by car or the local accessible ride option. Rideshares are pricey, cab companies are pricey and dying, and there is a physical limit to how many parking spaces a place can have.
This has nothing to do with increasing efficiency. That is and has always been a lie; this is about pressuring people to quit so they aren't fired, because firing has consequences and the powers that be cannot yet avoid all of those consequences.
So please keep calling, keep demonstrating, and make your feelings known, because we are on the brink of losing probably hundreds of federal employees nationwide. My position is pretty minimal so if I get the chop for posting this, so be it. We can't fix things if we don't know the problem exists.
