You, Sam and Dean had just finished a case you worked relentlessly on for weeks, and you needed a break. No matter how much you loved hunting, relished the sore muscles and adored the sense of accomplishment it gave you, every now and then you needed a night off. You hadn’t grown up like they had, sleeping in the back of a car and driving for days on end was all new to you- and at times you could get a little overwhelmed. Even though you’d been hunting for a little over 14 months, you still felt lost at times. It was definitely something you had to be in for the long run, something that took lifetimes to perfect. Of course your boyfriend, Sam, was always helpful and supportive. But, like you said before, you really needed a night off.
You and the Winchesters were laying on your beds in the motel and watching television together. Outside, the Arizona sun was resting low on the horizon and the air was thick and clinging to every available surface. But not inside; the three of you had the ac blasting. In fact, it was so cold in the small motel room, you and Sam were buried under the covers. Thick and fluffy, mountains of blankets were piled on top of the two of you. Sam had his arms lazily hugging your shoulders, and you had your head on his chest. Honestly, you didn’t know what was playing on the tv hanging on the adjacent wall. It was some show the Winchesters seemed to love, and because you loved them you watched along.
“Hey, what do you want to do tonight?” You wiggled around so your chin was resting on his shoulder and you propped your elbows up on his chest.
“Uh, I don’t know I was thinking we could just stay here, watch a movie and turn in early or something”
He saw your face fall and immediately broke out into a goofy grin, “I’m totally kidding. I actually had something planned!”
You gaped and smiled back at him, “What?”
“Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon before?”
“No, never, why?” You responded even though you already knew the answer.
“Cause I’m taking you,”
Your face lit up and again your mouth hung open in surprised delight, “Really!?”
"Yeah, wanna go now? We should get there just before the sun sets,”
Without responding you leapt from the bed and headed for the Impala, taking his hand and tugging him with you. He said a quick bye to Dean, who was still sprawled out on his bed watching the tv, before giving into your yanking on his arm.
Stepping out of the motel door, you immediately felt the change in temperature. The air hung thickly and you could almost feel your hair turn flat from the heat. You were wearing your loosest jean shorts and still didn’t feel any relief- it was hot as hell. The flowers embroidered onto your t-shirt’s shoulders felt weighted in the heat. Looking at Sam, you had no idea how he was still standing. He was wearing a grey short sleeved shirt and jeans. Long, heavy, blue jeans stretched all the way down to his ankles, and the Arizona sun wasn’t very forgiving.
“I can’t believe Dean didn’t put up more of a fight about us taking the Impala. The last time we stole it you got punched in the face, by the way I’m still super sorry about that.” You giggled as he held the car door open for you and you shimmied inside.
He let out a breathy laugh before responding, “Yeah, he was really wrapped up in whatever the hell we were watching”
“Wait you didn’t like it either? I thought you were so into it!” Your mouth hung slightly open in surprise, he really did seem to be following along and laughing at all of Dean’s jokes you didn’t understand.
“Dude, no way! I mean who actually enjoys a show about a bunch of old men fishing with their bare hands in some swamp?”
“Dean apparently!” You joked back as he shut the Impala’s door and stepped on the gas.
Baby’s engine roared in response before settling into a soft hum. You leaned back in your seat and threw your legs over Sam’s before blasting the ac. His hand immediately moved to grip your thigh and you let the cool air wash over you. A comfortable silence set over the car as you started watching the road before you. You were mesmerized by the broken yellow strips on the pavement that the Impala seemed to be flying over. They approached in flashes and then quickly sped under the car. It was always the little things you noticed, the little things you took interest in. Sam was the same way, and that was one of the reasons the two of you fit so well. While he was always remembering the most minuscule details of every date and moment the two of you shared, you were relentlessly planning surprise evenings or birthday dinners. It had taken you a while to realize it, but the two of you were compatible in every sense of the word. Your relationship would never be just a summer fling or a quick fuck when it was needed, it always was going to be so much more than that. And, living with him (and his brother) for the past 14 months had really opened your eyes to that- just how deep the lines went. And just how much you wanted to spend every single moment with him, possibly for the rest of your life.
Your voice broke the silence as you asked, “So have you ever been to the Grand Canyon before?”
“Yeah, just once. I was pretty young though so I didn’t really get to appreciate it, you know?” A stillness washed over Sam’s face, like he was caught up in a memory.
You and Sam had been dating for about 6 years, and were best friends long before that. John and your mom had been close growing up, and as a result you and the Winchesters were always family friends. However there was a gap, a small blip in the timeline. When you were 10 your mom decided she wanted the two of you to move away, you hadn’t found out why until 9 years later. She was a hunter,a damn good one too, and it finally caught up to her. You remembered the day so vividly. You were about 19 years old and a sophomore at Colby University in Maine when John called. You hadn’t spoken to him in years and were surprised that his number was still in your phone, but you answered it nonetheless. While you and Sam had kept in touch, occasionally meeting up or dragging each other to random social events- John truly was a stranger to you. He was the bearer of bad news, his voice was the one that told you the thing that ruined you. Your mom was dead. It was a shock at first, one you had denied whole heartedly. That was one of the worst days of your life, but somehow Sam had made it a little better. You’d reunited with your childhood best friends and the rest just kind of happened. At first you didn’t hunt, you adamantly refused to until recently. But, again, everything changed with the loss of life. A nest of vampires had rolled into your small, sleepy town and taken 4 people with it. When the Winchesters showed up you realized you couldn’t spend your life running and hiding from the supernatural. Because you knew, it was your job to help out- so nobody else had to. So, you forced your boyfriend- Sam- to take you with him on his next hunt. Up until that point, the bulk of your relationship had been him coming home to you whenever he could- usually bruised and bleeding. So, naturally, you jumped at the chance to spend more time with him and actually make a difference in the world.
Remembering Sam’s question, you smiled and nodded in response, “Yeah, I get that”
“So, if I remember correctly: going to the Grand Canyon was on your 11th grade summer bucket list.” Sam gave you that same goofy grin from before.
“Holy hell, how do you remember that? I completely forgot about that one”
“I dunno, I kind of thought it was cute” Sam’s cheeks blushed as he smiled at you.
“Hah, if I remember correctly, the third item on the list was to drink until I puked at college parties when I was supposed to be touring the universities.” You rolled your eyes at how juvenile you’d been in high school.
“Yeah, super adorable. And, to be fair, you did accomplish that one. Boulder University- remember?”
“Holy shit, yeah! That was the only party I got you to come to all summer!”
You laughed at the memory and, looking to the left, saw he was grinning right back. The rest of the ride was relatively silent until you asked him for gum and he nodded to the glove compartment. That god damn glove compartment. You clicked it open and, while fishing around for a stick of gum, stumbled upon a small black jewelry box. It was too compact to be holding a necklace or bracelet, so you found your mind wandering to earrings. Staring at the box, you knew it was wrong to ruin Sam’s surprise, but you decided to do it anyway. With a quick peek at Sam, to make sure he was still looking at the road and not paying attention to you, you opened the lid. Inside you found a flashy silver ring staring back at you- which you recognized as his mother’s.
What the hell?
