64 Zoo Lane
64 Zoo Lane is an animated series created by Belgian-born English author Vrombaut. the series is co-produced by French animation studio Millimages and British-based Zoo Lane Productions. The first two seasons aired from 1999 to 2003. After a seven-year hiatus, the series returned in 2010 for another two seasons, ending in 2013. A total of 104 episodes were produced. The creator of the TV series, An Vrombaut, also wrote and illustrated six 64 Zoo Lane picture books based on stories from the TV series.

The series follows the journey of a 7-year-old girl named Lucy who lives next door to a zoo at 64 Zoo Lane. every night the animals come and visit her telling her different stories. The characters include Georgina the Giraffe, Nelson the Elephant, Tickles and Giggles the Monkey, Boris the Bear, and Molly the Hippopotamus. The show teaches kids all about friendship and responsibility. Each episode ends with a discussion about friendly morals after every discussion Lucy ends up going to bed. Georgina deposits Lucy into bed via the bedroom window (later episodes show Lucy yawning and then sleeping soundly in bed; in the original episodes she would be lulled to sleep by the storytelling itself).Opportunities for learning: exploring language and vocabulary are enhanced by the use of intonation and expression in the character's voices and the themes of the animals' stories support social and emotional issues, including friendships and helping and caring for others.

AX1000: Contextual Studies in Animation (Semester 1)
Week 4 we have been asked to look at a few short animations outside of university lessons, first I looked at two animation first one is called Slim Pickings and second is The Cowboy both by Phil Mulloy, I don’t like the animation or character designs for either films. The stories are both politically motivated and both try to highlight the social confusion, maliciousness and the greed of man.
The second film I was asked to look at was animation called Little Wolf by  An Vrombaut, I feel even though the animation and design style is a vast improvement from the previous animations it’s still not my favourite style, personally I don’t like the outer proportionate body limbs of the characters and the animation I feel is slightly lazy, in contrast I find the story is fun and enjoyable at it consists of a short story about little wolf who gets stuck hanging onto the moon but until the moon sets and he is able to jump down.  An Vrombaut is also known for creating the children’s animation cartoon called 64 Zoo Lane, there is a similarity in the design style of the characters on Little wolf to characters from the other show.
Next, I was required to look at an animation by Darren Walsh called Angry Kid, this animation is well known to me as I saw the first series when it was released in the late 90′s, the Claymation is very good, and the episodes are very comical.
The following animation after is by Daniel Greaves and is called Flatworld, the visual design style of the animation appears as if the characters are 2d cut out drawn paper images, there is even reference to the strengthen this when the main character uses an eraser to shave his facial hair away, the animation is very clever plus the story is entertaining and comical.
The final animation i was asked to research is by Frederick Back called The Man Who Planted Trees, this animation is visually beautiful. The art style almost has a chalk on paper appearance to it and the story is interesting and captivating. The story itself is narrated and is about a person who comes across a lone shepherd in a barren valley and the single-handed quest the Shepard has created to re-forest the valley with trees.

The Big Snit - Richard Condie
Richard Condie’s ‘The Big Snit’ is a short animated cartoon produced by The National Board of Canada. The plot of the short is about a married couple who plays a game of scrabble that escalates when the husband cannot create a word with his letters, forcing the wife to take a break and the husband left to watch his favourite show “sawing for teens”. This is interrupted by a emergency warning of a global nuclear war had begun, eventually killing many people and the couple briefly after the husband and wife had made up over an argument over the scrabble game.

I enjoy the animations use of creative expressions the characters show, really creating a cartoony feel whatever the characters do. I also enjoy the comedic appeal within the dialog and the over exaggerated silliness the characters have within their personalities.
Godzilla meets Bambi - Marv Newland
Extremely good use of sound effects reinforcing the visuals. The simple short and direct animation combined with the strong sounds effects makes this very memorable.
youtube
Background research behind Godzilla in the original movie is said to contain the theme of nuclear war in which deformed many people thus represented in the appearance of Godzilla.
Lupo’s Meat -  Danny Antonucci
Lupo’s Meat was one of the first of Danny Antonucci’s animations being made back in 1987. The character of Lupo is shown as an Italian/Canadian butcher who complains strongly about his job one day, getting more angry and swearing  as he drops a piece of meat on the floor. Lupo in his anger then accidently cuts off his own thumb trying to cut more meat in which causes his whole body to eventually fall apart.
youtube
Being  a big fan of Danny Antonucci’s cartoon network show ‘Ed, Edd and Eddy’ I really enjoy his style and fluidity of his animations. I really enjoy the use of strong flat colours in his characters that really add to their personality and appearance.
The Little Wolf - An Vrombaut
‘The Little Wolf’ is a student film made at the Royal College of Art in 1992 by An Vrombaut. The cartoon animated short about a pack of wolves chasing a sheep, however the smallest wolf of the pack wonders off looking at the midnight sky. The little wolf then comes across the bright moon and attempts to grab it, in which eventually was successful but leaves the small wolf stuck hanging from the moon in the sky. Eventually the rest of the pack of wolves come to the small wolf’s aid and rescue him.
youtube
I highly enjoy the loose style, colouring and sound in this animation as it reminds me of childhood story books that had very cute and unique ways of drawing characters and scenery. I watched a lot of ‘64 Zoo Lane’ when I was a child and even now I highly enjoy the use of colour on both characters and backgrounds as they always complimented each other very well.

UN TIGRE EST INVITE POUR LE THE A CHAMP SUR DRAC
Mercredi 19 octobre 2022 – 10h – Espace culturel Navarre
