Nurse who said she’d misgender patients whines about being called transphobic

A Canadian nurse and anti-trans activist in British Columbia testified that she is “not transphobic” during a disciplinary hearing over her “derogatory and discriminatory” public statements. The hearing, which began last week and wrapped up Wednesday, was the latest in a years-long process stretching back to 2020. According to conservative outlet UnHerd, Amy Hamm first learned that she was under investigation by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) three years ago, after she helped pay for a billboard expressing support for transphobic author J.K. In June 2022, Hamm received an official citation informing her that the BCCNM’s Panel of Discipline Committee would be conducting a hearing on her conduct and competence as a registered nurse. She has also written for conservative outlets like The Post Millennial, Quillette, and The New Westminster Times. According to the CBC, she frequently refers to transgender women as “men” in social media posts, videos, and podcasts, and argues that trans women are a threat to cisgender women and children. She has also described nonbinary adults as making “an extremely embarrassing display of narcissism and low intelligence.” In its 2022 citation, the BCCNM described her conduct as violating professional standards. “I’m not transphobic,” Hamm said during her November 10 testimony. “I don’t have any issue with trans people — it’s the infringement on women and children’s rights.” She also described the concept of gender identity as “anti-scientific, metaphysical nonsense.” However, Hamm claimed that her anti-trans activism does not extend to the workplace. While she has posted that “we have eyeballs and we will continue to use them to misgender you,” she told the disciplinary panel that she always uses people’s correct pronouns at work. “Whether or not I agree with certain policies, I limit my advocacy for changing policies to outside of work,” she claimed. On Tuesday, Hamm responded to a question about whether her anti-trans activism might make transgender patients uncomfortable and discourage them from seeking care. The Bryan Awards - The Best of the Last Decade (The 2010s)

With only two weeks left in the decade, I took a thorough look back at the last ten Bryan Awards (with the last nine of them being recorded as annual podcasts for WCRS FM), and picked the Best of the Best since the 2010 Bryan Awards (or programs that aired since January 1, 2010, and airing up until the cut-off for this September’s Bryan Awards, which was May 31, which would eliminate the likes of Mrs. Fletcher, Season 2 of Big Little Lies, plus newbies like On Becoming A God in Central Florida, Perfect Harmony, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and this week’s A Christmas Carol).

Here are the Guidelines Chosen for both this and the Silver Garbage Awards Worst of the Decade: - Eligibility Period is January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2019. - Glee is being entered for New Series of the Decade, because it won the 2010 Bryan Award in that race, despite it debuted in 2009. - Younger Acting will be merged through the genres: Daytime, Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series. And if an actor turned 26 doesn't really matter, as long as 50% of their nominations were before they were 26. - Big Little Lies (Season 1), Orange Is the New Black, and Downton Abbey are Dramas. Shameless is a Comedy. True Detective is a Longform, as is American Horror Story, and ALL seasons will be lumped into one for Anthology Stories. - Sherlock and Sharknado are being entered for ALL of their movies, ditto for Black Mirror episodes, in the Longform races. - There will be separate Lead and Supporting Acting races for Comedy and Drama Bryan Awards, but NOT for Silver Garbage. So,

Loving J.K. Rowling has always felt a little illicit.

When her Harry Potter series was first released in the 1990s, it was relentlessly attacked by religious zealots convinced that her fiction would convert a generation of young readers to the Occult. Tucking into it for the first time as an elementary school student, I felt like I was taking a purposefully defiant stance against her naysayers. As a Christian school student, I had to keep her books hidden away to avoid getting in trouble, but I consumed them hungrily regardless.

Fast forward twenty years and she's successfully pissed off an equally evangelical movement: the woke-scolds intent on doing away with the concept of biological sex and replacing it with the ineffable concept of gender identity. For months now she has been speaking out about this toxic subculture and the devastating impact it's having on women and children — and for her trouble, she's been relentlessly misrepresented in the media and attacked by narcissist activists who have less moral courage in their whole body than she has in her pinkie finger.

This week Amy Eileen Hamm and Chris Elston erected a billboard in Vancouver expressing a simple message of affection in thanks for her bravery and advocacy. A similar poster was recently pulled in the UK, so they surely anticipated push-back — but it's still astonishing that noisy idiots were able to champion censorship and get it pulled within 24 hours. This is just the latest example of activists trampling the concept of free speech and engaging in large-scale public misogyny, routinely tossing out their favourite woman-hating epithet: "TERF".

For some, this may be the first time they've experienced the cult-like rhetoric and mobbing firsthand. People who dare to express solidarity with Rowling are shouted down as being hateful and exclusionary, and a local politician has even called for Amy and Chris' workplaces to be targeted. As Canadians, we need to stand together against this cultural bigotry — even when it's coming from the people closest to us.

As Rowling wrote in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, "it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." I would argue that it's harder, actually, and the most painful moments since I've engaged with this topic last year have come when people I admire and love mistake my concern for women's rights and free speech as being transphobic. But if people continue to shut up and self-censor, these bigots will never be held accountable for the damage their delusional worldview is wreaking on our society.

In her epic blog post detailing her emotional journey through this debate, Rowling wrote: “The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women... to male violence – ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences – is nonsense.”

I couldn't agree more. I keep coming back to the image of Dumbledore, surrounded on all sides by enemies, fighting through the swirling darkness to ensure that Harry can return to Hogwarts safely. I feel like that small bespectacled boy in the presence of a great wizard when I read the wise, measured and compassionate words of J.K. Rowling.

"And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure."
