New trends in tourism From sources across the web

Emerging Travel Trends Shaping the Industry: From Wellness to AI-Powered Planning
The travel industry is changing at a pace that cannot be paralleled. With new trends in technology, consumer preferences, and much more emphasis being placed on sustainability, its rather fast-paced change is unstoppable. What's emerging as far as diversified personal traveling habits go, are trends that are shaping the future of tourism. In this blog, we’ll dive into some of the most prominent trends in the travel industry today, with a particular focus on developments in India, where the travel landscape is experiencing rapid growth and transformation.
1. Wellness Travel: A Holistic Escape
As modern life becomes increasingly stressful, wellness travel has emerged as a powerful antidote. This trend emphasizes physical, mental, and emotional well-being, where many travelers are entering the arena of health spas, yoga retreats, meditation centers, and other restorative experiences. Wellness tourism is booming around the world, and since India possesses a strong heritage of yoga, Ayurveda, and holistic healing practices, it has become one of the preferred destinations for seekers of wellness. From a luxurious Himalayan retreat to a coastal Ayurveda resort, wellness travel is designed to refresh and recharge amid frenetic global living.
Experiential Travel: Cultural Connection Deepening
Experiential tourism is more than visiting a new destination; it's about recalling memories and experiencing true cultural expressions. India's booming middle class, with the growing use of digital tools in discovering new destinations as well as experiences, is also fueling this trend. Other than conventional sightseeing, travelers now want to delve into local traditions, try various types of cuisines, learn crafts, and engage in meaningful interactions with communities.
3. Eco-Tourism: Protecting the Planet While Traveling
Eco-tourism has long been a buzzword, but it’s now a necessity for sustainable travel. Travelers are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact, and India, with its rich biodiversity and natural landscapes, is increasingly catering to eco-conscious tourists. Eco-tourism promotes responsible travel that conserves the environment, supports local communities, and educates travelers about conservation.
4. Offbeat Destinations: Discover Hidden Gems
India is home to thousands of offbeat destinations that are relatively unexplored by mass tourism. From quiet villages in the Northeast to secluded coastal towns and untouched mountain ranges, offbeat destinations give travelers opportunities to spend their time largely away from tourists and experience something unusual. These offbeat locations are becoming increasingly popular as travelers are looking to acquire more personal and authentic experiences.
5. Religious Tourism: The Pillar of Indian Travel
India is a country of profound religious roots and is a highly dominant segment of the travel industry. Millions of pilgrims visit sacred sites such as Varanasi, Amritsar, and Tirupati every year. Beyond the pilgrimage, India's spiritual offerings attract a global audience in search of a connection with their faith or exploration of ancient traditions and rituals.
6. AI in Travel Planning: A Smart Approach to Itineraries
Artificial Intelligence will revolutionize how we plan and book travel. AI-based platforms today can give you personalized recommendations, suggest itineraries that are automatically curated for you, and even give you virtual assistance to answer any of your questions or provide real-time answers. Here is why it is becoming one trend in Indian travel: AI recommends based on your past travel behavior and preferences.
Automation in booking and planning saves time and enhances convenience.
AI-based customer service tools (like chatbots) offer 24/7 support, making travel planning smoother.
7. Sleep Tourism: Prioritizing Restful Stays
A relatively new trend in India and globally is sleep tourism – a travel niche focused on enhancing the quality of sleep during a trip. Hotels and resorts now provide services such as customized pillows, soundproof rooms, and special sleep therapy treatments to cater to travelers interested in prioritizing rest in their stay. The fad of traveling for sleep is particularly sought after by those who have just traveled and wish to shake off jet lag or those who lead particularly stressful lives.
8. Hotel Robots and Chatbots: The Future of Hospitality
More and more, technology has become the spark for the travel and hospitality industry, with robots and chatbots appearing increasingly in hotels and airports around the globe. Robots are used for room service or acting as a concierge or cleaner, helping hotels lower the costs of operations while also improving the experience of guests. Chatbots have been launched for customer service in travel, enabling passengers to make bookings, ask questions, and solve problems at their convenience.
9. Facial Recognition Technology: Fastest, Safest
Facial recognition technology is being deployed by major airlines and airports to streamline airport security and boarding processes to provide smoother, faster, and more secure travel experiences. Although there has been considerable debate over its invasive implications on passenger privacy, the technology has proven highly effective in accelerating the oftentimes tedious experience of an airport process.
10. Immersive Experiences: Bringing Destinations to Life
Revolutionary examples of immersive technologies for travelers include virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which are changing the way people relate to destinations. Virtual tours of historical sites or 360-degree views of hotels are now allowing travelers to pre-live destinations before even booking a trip. Many travel businesses are making these technologies interact to spark imagination and connect the traveler emotionally to the destination.

The Future of Travel is Dynamic and Diverse
The travel industry is currently in the middle of a transformative process. Wellness travel, eco-tourism, and uses of AI and robotics are changing the ways we travel today and will continue to shape those ways in the years to come. More personalized, immersive, and sustainable travel experiences mean a future in tourism more diverse and richer than it has ever been. Whether it's relaxation, adventure, or connection, the travel industry has options for every person.
As these trends continue to unfold, it will be interesting to see how technology, culture, and environmental consciousness shape travel. These are exciting times indeed for both industry players and intrepid travelers looking to discover their worlds with new eyes!
It is, therefore, a great time to consider any of these trends on your next holiday. Keep an eye on this developing theme and think about how you might incorporate them into your travel plans. Happy travels! ????✈️

5 Interesting facts about Diwali
Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, is one of the most widely celebrated religious occasions across the world. Here are some of the most surprising facts about Diwali that you probably didn’t know.
1. The day Lakshmi visits her devotees
Goddess Lakshmi visits her devotees and bestows gifts and blessings upon each of them. To welcome the Goddess, devotees clean their houses, decorate them with finery and lights, and prepare sweet treats and delicacies as offerings. Devotees believe the happier Lakshmi is with the visit, the more she blesses the family with health and wealth.
2. Different Diwali stories
Many see Diwali honouring the return of the lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana from exile, as told in the ancient Hindu epic called the Ramayana. To some, Diwali marks the return of Pandavas after 12 years of Vanvas and one year of agyatavas in the other ancient Hindu epic called the Mahabharata. Many other Hindus believe Diwali is linked to the celebration of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and wife of deity Vishnu. The five day festival of Diwali begins on the day Lakshmi was born from the churning of cosmic ocean of milk during the tug of war between the forces of good and forces of evil; the night of Diwali is the day Lakshmi chose Vishnu as her husband and then married him. Some Hindus offer pujas to additional or alternate deities such as Kali, Ganesha, Saraswati, and Kubera. Other Hindus believe that Diwali is the day Vishnu came back to Lakshmi and their abode in the Vaikuntha; so those who worship Lakshmi receive the benefit of her good mood, and therefore are blessed with mental, physical and material well-being during the year ahead. But mostly the festival is considered the return of the Lord Rama and Sita after completing fourteen years in exile.
3. On the day of Diwali, Lord Mahavira attained his Moksha
In Jainism, Diwali commemorates the anniversary of Lord Mahavir‘s attainment of moksha, or freedom from the cycle of reincarnation, in 527 B.C.E. Lord Mahavir was the 24th and last Thirtankar of Jainism and revitalized the religion as it is today. First referred to in Jain scriptures as dipalikaya, or light leaving the body, it is said that the earth and the heavens were illuminated with lamps to mark the occasion of Lord Mahavir’s enlightenment.
4. Sikhs commonly called Diwali Bandi Chhor Divas
Diwali, for Sikhs, marks the Bandi Chhor Divas, when Guru Har Gobind Ji freed himself and Hindu Kings, from Fort Gwalior, from the prison of Islamic ruler Jahangir, and arrived at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Ever since then, Sikhs celebrate Bandi Choor Divas, with the annual lighting up of Golden Temple, fireworks and other festivities.
5. It is a national holiday in India, Trinidad & Tobago, Myanmar, Nepal, Mauritius, Guyana, Singapore, Suriname, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Fiji. And is an optional holiday in Pakistan.
Diwali is celebrated around the world, particularly in countries with significant populations of Hindu, Jain and Sikh origin. These include Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom,United Arab Emirates, and the United States. With more understanding of Indian culture and global migration of people of Indian origin, the number of countries where Diwali/Deepavali is celebrated has been gradually increasing. While in some countries it is celebrated mainly by Indian expatriates, in others it is becoming part of the general local culture. In most of these countries Diwali is celebrated on the same lines as described in this article with some minor variations. Some important variations are worth mentioning.

Light On The Saints of the East - The Light of Ajaib Satsang - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast
Explored today during this spiritual podcast, A Satsang Without Walls, A Sant Mat Satsang Podcast: The Book As Guru? Baba Bishan Das discusses a beautiful scripture from India known as the Adi Granth (Shri Guru Granth Sahib), a huge collection of hymns of praise and love (bhakti). Santji: "I went to Amritsar and bought three copies of Guru Granth Sahib. I had two other friends who were with me and for six months continuously, we three people read that book many times. We studied it and we worked very hard in order to find those lines that would say that 'there can be no Master after Guru Gobind Singh'. However, we did not find those lines and we realized that the statements which we believed in were not there. We came back to Baba Bishan Das and surrendered to him. We said, 'Baba Bishan Das, you are the true one. The words which we thought were in the book are not there. What you have said is true.'"

December 24, 2022 Christmas Eve Morning
I’m feeling a bit discouraged this morning, friends and family. I’ll open with that. Our challenges cannot compare to what so many struggle with around us—and all I have to do is look at the U.S. headlines to know that this was probably a good Christmas to skip in the Northeast. So forgive me, in advance, for asking you to indulge me.
We moved into our place yesterday- and we are still so grateful for this gift. But northern India is experiencing a “severe cold wave”- and while the temperature may sound balmy at 41 degrees- in a house made of stone and concrete (as almost all homes are) with no heating (also typical)- last night was damn cold. If you know me, you know I’m pretty tough about a lot of things (growing up going to Windy Island certainly trained me)- but you also know there is one thing I can’t stand—and that’s being COLD. We went to an electrical appliance store first thing yesterday and bought a quartz heater…but frankly, I can’t tell any discernable difference between our bedroom and the outside after running it for several hours. And the hot water does not seem to be working. The person who manages the house, Vasu, is very nice- and assured me he’d have a plumber attend to it today. But not being able to take a hot shower right now just adds to my shivering. It’s my understanding that this weather will last through January—and I’m wondering how that’s going to go.
David and I made a trip to the mall yesterday to purchase some things we both needed and wanted to make the place feel more like home. That was really fun--mostly because David went down to Reliance Smart (a lot like a smaller Walmart) to buy necessities (a bucket, clothes pins, etc.) while I went upstairs to Home Centre (India’s version of Bed Bath and Beyond) to buy the more “wants vs. needs.” That was a lot more enjoyable to do without David continuously murmuring how much he hates shopping. Salespeople in India are encouraged to be extremely attentive when one enters a shop—and that can be a little overwhelming, to be honest. But I was eventually approached by a young man named Ravi who was terrifically helpful, patient, good humored, and charming—and we had a great time together. Several of Ravi’s coworkers hovered nearby with obvious envy. I’m not sure if they work on commission ( it was clear I was there to spend some significant bucks) or if they were just damn bored (the ratio of salesperson to customer tends to be very, very high here.)
Once my purchases were wrapped up and ready to go (first I had to dash downstairs to give David some cash after he learned that Reliance’s credit card system was not working)- Ravi and another salesman walked TWO shopping carts of purchases down to the street,
, where they hailed an autorickshaw, loaded everything into it (with barely room for humans)
and Ravi ACCOMPANIED US TO OUR HOUSE. This was at his manager’s instruction (and Ravi’s good nature)- and after we unloaded everything to the driveway of our house- Ravi would not accept any tip. I wrote him a rave review when I received the now ubiquitous customer survey on my phone late last evening.
I know that part of my blues is the shock of moving from a very comfy hotel bubble to real life in Amritsar, and the rest is probably that it’s Christmas Eve (my favorite day of the year)- and I’m in bed with the knit cap on that David thankfully suggested I buy at Reliance Smart yesterday and which I wore all night (an homage to my dear old dad—who often did the same.)
We had a simple and incredible meal last night served by the house’s staff member Nidhi (sp?)
and this morning David brewed us the Starbucks coffee given to me by my wonderful student Quinn Whittman as a gift (served in our new mugs from Home Centre.) If I can just get warm…all will be fine (WHY didn’t I bring my hot water bottle to India, Sarah HJ? Now I’m trying to track a couple down.)
We are off to the Foreign Registration Office to meet Dr. Devender Singh from Khalsa College. Hoping to get that red tape task taken care of today!
Missing our friends and family in the U.S. very much this morning. Hoping you all are staying safe and warm. Please be careful out there! And wishing you all a very merry, joyous, and warm holiday surrounded by loved ones.
Thus endeth my whining…with a photo of me with Scary Santa.

Behind the Scenes: Shinda Kahlon’s Creative Process
In the vibrant world of Punjabi music, Shinda Kahlon stands out as a shining example of talent, determination, and cultural pride. Hailing from the village of Dujowal in Amritsar, Punjab, Kahlon has managed to carve out a significant place for himself in the music industry, both in India and abroad. His journey is not just about making music but also about bridging cultural gaps, celebrating heritage, and inspiring millions around the globe. Today, as a prominent artist in the Punjabi music scene, Shinda Kahlon’s story is one of resilience and passion.
Early Life in Punjab
Born and raised in a small village in Punjab, Shinda Kahlon was exposed to the vibrant traditions and music of the region from a young age. The sounds of dhols, traditional Punjabi folk songs, and the stories of his community played a significant role in shaping his musical sensibilities. Growing up, Kahlon faced the struggles that many small-town dreamers encounter — limited resources and opportunities.
Despite these challenges, Kahlon’s love for music remained unshaken. He often participated in local music events and honed his craft by listening to legendary Punjabi artists. These formative years laid the foundation for his future as an artist who would not only honor his roots but also take Punjabi music to a global audience.
The Move to Canada
Like many others in search of a better future, Shinda Kahlon moved to Canada, where he hoped to find new opportunities to pursue his dreams. Relocating to Victoria, British Columbia, was both a challenge and a turning point in his life. The move exposed him to a new culture, diverse musical influences, and the struggles of being an immigrant artist.
Kahlon’s experience in Canada wasn’t without its hardships. He worked tirelessly to establish himself in a foreign land, balancing odd jobs and his passion for music. Yet, these experiences added depth to his music, allowing him to tell stories that resonated with both the Punjabi diaspora and international audiences.
Breakthrough Moments in the Punjabi Music Industry
Shinda Kahlon’s big break came when he started collaborating with Run-Up Records, a label known for its fresh and innovative approach to Punjabi music. Through this platform, Kahlon joined forces with renowned artists like AP Dhillon, Gurinder Gill, and Gminxr, creating some of the most iconic Punjabi tracks of recent times.
One of his most notable songs, Majhail, quickly climbed the charts, resonating with audiences for its catchy beats and relatable lyrics. The song showcased Kahlon’s ability to blend traditional Punjabi elements with contemporary sounds, a style that would become his trademark. Following this success, Kahlon contributed to the mega-hit Brown Munde, a song that transcended borders and became an anthem for Punjabis worldwide.
These tracks not only solidified Kahlon’s place in the industry but also highlighted his unique ability to connect with listeners across cultures. His music speaks to themes of identity, resilience, and pride, making it deeply relatable to anyone navigating the complexities of belonging.
Cultural Impact and Global Recognition
Shinda Kahlon’s rise to fame is not just a personal achievement — it’s a testament to the growing global influence of Punjabi music. By combining traditional sounds with modern beats, Kahlon has helped introduce Punjabi music to new audiences. His tracks have topped charts in countries like the UK and Canada, bringing a piece of Punjab to the global stage.
Kahlon’s music also serves as a bridge between generations. While older listeners appreciate the nods to traditional Punjabi culture, younger fans are drawn to the modern, upbeat vibe of his songs. This dual appeal has allowed him to foster a loyal and diverse fanbase.
Inspiration for the Next Generation
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Shinda Kahlon has become an inspiration for aspiring artists, especially those from small towns or immigrant backgrounds. His journey demonstrates that success is possible with hard work, persistence, and a commitment to one’s roots. Kahlon often emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself, a message that resonates with fans and fellow artists alike.
His collaborations with other Punjabi artists highlight his belief in community over competition. By working together, Kahlon and his peers have created a movement that’s redefining the Punjabi music industry.
Conclusion
Shinda Kahlon story is one of triumph against the odds. From his humble beginnings in Dujowal to his rise as an international music sensation, Kahlon’s journey embodies the spirit of determination and cultural pride. His music, a blend of tradition and innovation, continues to inspire millions and serves as a reminder of the power of art to unite people across borders.
As Kahlon’s career evolves, his contributions to the music industry and his cultural impact are bound to grow. Whether you’re a fan of Punjabi music or someone looking for a story of perseverance and success, Shinda Kahlon’s journey is worth celebrating.

JOY
December 30, 2022
And finally some sun! We had a little rain yesterday, which really cleared the air. Today is glorious.
The last two days have been like a shot in the arm to both of us. We had two sessions with the drama students, and I think in so many ways, this trip is just what I needed to renew my joy in teaching and remind me of why I BECAME a teacher in the first place. Thus, the title of my post.
The first day was an introduction to the project. We shared some of the footage (Urdu version) of our 2015 production “Dagh Dagh Ujala”. I was worried that the students would lose interest, or never HAVE interest: but they were so focused (even though we ended up having to show the clips on my computer because of technical issues.) They were laughing and weeping at all of the right places. Part of this, I’m sure, is because that story is basically their families’ stories. But it’s also these students.
The next day we met in a drama classroom- although when we arrived they were all sitting around an outdoor fire pit (a large metal bowl)- it was COLD and rainy!
We then spent about two hours working with them in a spacious (but cold) drama classroom. We played some “getting to know you” and ensemble building games. Thanks to those games, I’m getting better at their names. It’s always challenging for me to learn students’ names—add in the fact that most of these names are very unfamiliar to me (Manpreet, Sadhu, Gurwinder…) and it’s even more challenging. But we had a BLAST. These students are 100% present, committed, POSITIVE, generous, joyful, and eager. Their spirit is infectious and I feel incredibly privileged to be working with them.
After our first meeting on Wednesday, David and I took our first exercise walk around the campus.
It’s a perfect place for that: an oasis in the midst of the chaos of Amritsar. It is peaceful, beautiful, and without the constant honking of horns as cars come up behind you or pass you (I know they think they are warning me, but I have mini-heart attacks with every beep.) I turned to David as we walked on a glorious afternoon and said, “Today is the first day I truly feel joy since we arrived.” I know there will be tough days. That’s unavoidable. But these students and their teachers are a gift.
Our translation challenges were solved by the generosity of Gurpreet, an English faculty member (English literature—favorite book “Mrs. Dalloway”, which we learned during “Molecule”.)
At the end of our session yesterday, we were treated to an impromptu performance by Sangha and Pamma, and listen to that VOICE!
We couldn’t get an Uber yesterday (the 20-minute trip from Khalsa College to our house costs about $2.50 U.S.), so we took a rickshaw- one of the new and very cool electric ones that are also much quieter. The driver said he knew where we were going, and we agreed on a price of 200 rupees. We started off great, and then he took a turn that made no sense. David pointed it out on google maps, and the driver spoke to some people on the (very crowded) street, and we set off again (with some turning around.) He kept making wrong turns—mostly because he was busy talking to his family on the phone and not paying attention. Then he handed the phone to us, and we had to say hello to everyone in his family! When we finally arrived at our place (I was HUNGRY- it was lunch time—2:30) he told David it would now be 300 rupees. David may have a soft spot for Uber drivers, etc after doing some driving himself- but I wasn’t having it. Yes, it was a long trip- but that was his fault, not ours. David was reaching for his wallet, I stopped him, took the 200 rupees, dropped them in the drivers lap, and walked away. You agree on the price before you get into the rickshaw, and that’s the price. (And 200 rupees for that ride was a good price – we’ve been told “no more than 40”!)
The students have two assignments for their winter break: spend at least two hours at the Partition Museum (which is outstanding)- and seek out Partition stories and interview everyone you can. We will meet on the 10th (about half way through their break) to check in on how things are going. As I told them, “I work best under pressure!”
This morning we made yet ANOTHER trip to the FRRO Bureau of Immigration, trying to get us finally registered with the local government. What an ordeal! But the office is 5 minutes away on foot, and the people are very helpful. Hoping we are almost there! I do sometimes wonder what could be accomplished in this country if a little less energy was spent on red tape, and a little more on addressing poverty, the incredible trash issue (trash is everywhere on the streets), the environment, violence against women, the overpopulation of stray dogs that keep procreating, etc. But it is what it is.
Off to the old city shopping with our wonderful new friend and guide Jasdeep. I am in search of a rug that can cover these cold floors and not cost an arm and a leg (as Bev used to say.)
(Update- Jasdeep and her friend Partha brought us to a store where we got the perfect rug for our home. And I wish I’d had my camera out—because the bargaining those two women did was incredible. Got it for 1500 rupees (about $18.00- would have been $60.00 in U.S.)- Partha was disappointed. She wanted it for 1000 rupees, but I made it too clear that 1500 was okay, and the deal was sunk!)
Oh! And the two adorable children of the house staff here were flying a kite, and invited me to try! It was amazing! I've never flown a kite before- and now I get why people love it! And this kid (I have nicknamed him and his little sister Jen and Scout) is a master! The kite was SO HIGH, it was merely a dot. It's kite season, evidently. Jem's was one of several I could see-- but his was the highest! (The kids are fascinated by us, and very shy, too. But today he asked me to catch the string spool as he dropped it from the roof...and then he gestured for me to try. SO COOL.)
