It's my 1 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳
Oh gosh, has it really been a year already? This has been a journey, for sure, and thank you to everyone who follows me! Your support means I get to keep doing what I love, which is making cute, cuddly amigurumi babies. Here's a look back at some of the things I've made!

My neck is fucked up in some inexplicable way (silent migraine?) and I have been trying everything I can think of. It’s a little better, but the strain persists.
I am hoping everything in this post is coherent and spelled correctly, but it’s a gamble at this point. I only just caught "Spiders George."

The Arcana M6 Learning How to Crochet
Asra:
This man does not have the attention span to crochet.
Sure, they love to lay in bed and watch you do it, sure, he'll try, but after about thirteen and a half stitches he gets distracted and decides it's naptime, or he needs to reorganize the spice drawer, or that you don't have enough pumpkin bread, or–
Once you sit his ass down and make him actually retain knowledge they actually do pretty good
Has tons of ideas for what he'll make next, will probably never get to any of them, he is the ultimate procrastinator
Loves to buy you the most random yarn, if it catches his eye it's going with him. Even though they aren't necessarily aesthetically pleasing, you love your drawer of tie dyed, bejewelled, and glittery yarns
He makes Faust a snake sweater (sock?) and declares she will never be cold again
Nadia:
Listens to you intently, super eager to learn and immediately become the best
Completely silent. Doesn't say a word to you until she's figured it out, determined to please. She keeps trying, an ambitious fire in her eyes. You ask her if she needs help a couple of times but she's insistent that she'll be okay
That is, until the middle of the night when she crawls into bed with you, seething
Why did the hook keep slipping out? Why did her knots keep coming undone? This was clearly a defective ball of yarn, what even is a "factory knot"?
The next time she's free you sit on her lap and talk her through the process
Unfortunately as much as she adores the countess, Chandra wouldn't be caught dead in anything either of you make
Julian:
Please, MC, I have the steady hands and patience of a doctor. I appreciate what you do but really, how hard could it be?
Oh, how wrong he was
Skip to him sobbing into your lap and profusely apologizing for underestimating you and your talents, you are so, so, talented and he wants you to know that, can you ever forgive him? Do you st-
Oh and Portia, he realizes he's been doing that to her oh God what has he done to you both he's so horrible and oh no oh no oh no
You and Portia sit through several one man plays, ballads, and interpretive dances featuring the both of you (or rather, julian in wigs pretending to be you)
Malak doesn't care for crocheted bird clothes but he certainly likes to steal your buttons and shiny metal hooks, forcing you to opt for the wooden ones
Portia:
Oh, she already knew how to crochet
Believe me, if you were crocheting she would be doing it right next to you if she had the time to
The thing is, Portia isn't just okay at crocheting. She's good. Amazing, even. The first time you crochet together, one glance at her soon turns to you dropping your hook (and your jaw)
Even though she is the supreme crochet champion, she still showers you with compliments and adoration
The type to crochet and read at the same time, gets super into the book and stops focusing on her project completely yet somehow manages to crochet flawlessly
Pepi loves to roll around in your buckets of yarn, whenever you want to make something all your yarn is frizzy and full of cat fur (you will have to physically wrestle Pepi to get a garment on her)
Muriel:
Convinced he'll be bad at it before he even tries
Begrudgingly accepts your offer to teach him anyways, he mumbles something about having clumsy hands and looks away
He takes a while to learn, but after he gets the hang of it he does really well. At heart, he's an artist, no matter how much he tries to deny it
He had watched you crochet before, but now he watches you extra, extra carefully to learn more without intruding
There is now a shelf designed for all your amigurumi plushies placed just next to the one for his wood carvings
When winter hits, you notice all the chickens have been tucked into sweaters, as well as an extra toasty looking Inanna, which is enough to make your heart melt and send you into cardiac arrest (rip MC)
Lucio:
OOOOOOH MC WHAT ARE YOU UP TO??
After a brief explanation and a quick tutorial he picks up the hook and gives it a go
Holy mother of what is this trickery
He's shocked about how difficult it is, and yes he is being resilient for you but god he wants to scream and chuck the hook into the woods and never see it again
He can snip yarn with his metal arm for you though so that's pretty sick
You're pretty sure you catch him glaring at the hook when he thinks you aren't looking
He's super proud of you for being able to crochet though, he thinks you're the coolest ever and brags about it to everyone who will listen
Mercedes and Melchior love the sweaters you inevitably make for them and Lucio pulls all sorts of shit so you'll make him one too

hi, i think i absolutely hate my art right now? I mean, i signed up for this exchange fest and i thought, alright, maybe ill write, but its exam season and i only have the spoons to draw, and I DONT LIKE IT, i dont like my art, and i need to submit it when its PERFECT, i mean, no one in their right minds would accept a piece of art the artist themselves are dissatisfied with, right?
Ok, maybe I over-reacted, on flipping back to it, it isnt so bad? Objectively speaking it passes? Sorry for the vent ask
Hey there anon!
I like imperfect art. Because while you may see the flaws, I only see a completed masterpiece. There is a saying that goes "always leave a mistake in your work, because only god can be perfect." I'm not religious, but that hits a chord with me. When I crochet I can laugh at the little mistakes, the missed stitches, the yarn sticking out where I didn't darn it in right, the bad color changes. It makes the piece mine.
When I make amigurumi, WHEW, I miss so many stitches because I cannot count to save my life. Sometimes I will pull out the round and redo it, but most of the time I will just add or subtract a stitch at the end of the round. I have very loose tension too, so you can always see the stuffing in my amigurumi if I use worsted yarn. Even sometimes when I use bulky yarn. It doesn't have to be perfect, anon. That is what makes art special.
You should see my first crochet pieces. I keep them so I can tell how far I have come. My first quilt? A disaster! Like, I sewed parts that were folded in on themselves. So, my edges aren't neat. My quilting lines? Good god they are atrocious. But I kept it. Because it showed that I did something. That I tried. And that I was ok with an imperfect work.
All you have to do is try and put as much of your heart into it as you can. My writing is absolute shit sometimes, and I wonder how people read it. But then I get comments that tell me "this is my favorite fic to read for x!" Or, "your fic really inspired me to write my own!" I think my writing is awful and cliche, but other people love it.
Don't doubt your work, anon. You might see a steaming pile of shit, but I promise you the right people won't. I once had someone paint me a picture of my cats for an art exchange. They got one of my cat's colors wrong. But I still love that piece with all my heart. Because someone took time out of their day to make that for me. That makes it special.
Don't worry if you are dissatisfied with it. You will always see things that can change because you are growing as an artist. You can't sit there and fix every little mistake because there will always be something new that pops up as your eye for art grows.
I'm sure your recipient is going to love it, no matter what! Good luck with the art and good luck on your exams! Make sure to make time for rest too!

I've been fighting to find time to crochet in the past 9 months (and incredibly, it's only getting harder!) I've also noticed that since having a baby, my crafting interests have definitely shifted! It's so much harder to find the bandwidth for amigurumi, but can you believe a baby hat can be whipped up in like half an hour!? Here's a little snapshot of my crafting postpartum!
Tumblr media
"Milestone blanket" letters/numbers:
I didn't even realize I wanted to do these until Solly was born, and thought if I did some crochet it would add a more personal twist! I am glad I did because the time really does fly by and it's nice to look back month by month and compare how he grows! I used the amazing free patterns from HappyBerry Crochet, following along on her youtube videos is a delight! I then used this really helpful tutorial on stiffening with cornstarch from Heart Hook Home to keep them in shape, which is helpful now that Solly has very grabby hands!
Tumblr media
Baby blankets:
I actually made two blankets after baby came! One for little Solly and one for his slightly older cousin! I used this super helpful tutorial by Em's Fiber Arts and of course the letter tutorials from HappyBerry again! I've always wanted to use an Ombre yarn, but of course with amigurumi that doesn't make a lot of sense - a baby blanket was the perfect opportunity!
High contrast mobile:
This was actually mostly done pre-baby! I freehanded the striped sphere around a cat toy, the ring has a little shaker of pellets, the tiny balls have a bell in them, and the checkerboard that I made with this pattern from Dream A Little Bigger has some crinkly plastic in it! I didn't have the idea to put them on a hula hoop over the crib until it was necessary, but they really helped reset the brain an angry little baby for the first few months!
Christmas tree:
Our little New York apartment never had room for a Christmas tree, but I thought it would be fun to have a little decoration! I actually crocheted around a circle of plastic cut from a grocery store cake box and freehanded a cone shape - I used some weird fat yarn for the tree and some weird pompom yarn for the garland - sometimes you just have to dig around in your stash to see what you have!
Tumblr media
Hats:
Once again I used RepeatCrafterMe's owl hat pattern as the base. I made a little bear hat with the leftover yarn from Solly's blanket, a little Christmas hat, and of course the Grogu hat/ears for Halloween! I free-handed the ears for the two ear hats and just kinda winged it on making the longer tail of the Santa-style hat!

Queer-iest queer
One thing that I absolutely love about myself is how every day is a new day of discovering just how queer I am and that delights me to no ends.
I recently binge watches S1 of Our Flag Means Death in preparation for the new season and also because why wouldn't you want to know that the kiss is coming and burn with anticipation anyway. I also binged Good Omens S2 and the final season of Disenchantment. It's safe to say that my little heart is in queer overload.
I'm still in awe with the writers who made Mary absolutely super chill with Stede saying that "his name is Ed" when confessing that he's in love. Because, why wouldn't it be normal, why wouldn't she be happy for him. The lack of toxicity in these series is breaking my heart in a million sparkling little shards of rainbow colors of happiness. Just overjoyed, I am.
Then there's Disenchantment, where having a mermaid girlfriend is a "duh!" but what got me good was the realistic awkward discussion of being a half-woman half-fish, and how mermaids are women, not half-women. If you know what this is an "coding" of then you know. But... The coding is not even coding; it's there, the point they're making is there and I'm absolutely in tears. It's beautiful to see it. It's beautiful to see queer love just existing and only being burdened by bullshit with which any relationship is burdened.
Then there's Good Omens. I mean... It's Neil Gaiman. Need I say more? I'm hoping that S2 of Sandman will be gay-ified as well. I need to see Morpheus kiss a guy, I really need it.
What I most like about both GO and OFMD is that these are middle-aged men not young people. They are attractive but not in the very obvious and traditional kind of way but their love for one another is so beautiful to see that that's what makes them attractive.
I'm basically having my own little private pride month sitting in my recliner l, crocheting pillows and amigurumi cats and bunnies.

Forgot to write down the artist, please let me know, I can't find it with reverse search image 😭

An Engaged Update
I’ve been waiting for a moment of calm so I could wrap up the HH’s goings-ons in a narratively satisfying blog post. Things haven’t really calmed for me, though, so this one will have a lot of loose threads.
Since my last big update, I have arranged a functioning Linktree for convenience, and I updated my website with a new landing page and ToS. Plans to start paying for my own domain are still up in the air.
As I’ve said on social media, the shop itself is closed because I’ve moved back to Germany, and I need to sort some things out. In the meantime, I’ve been working diligently on preparing for a more permanent reopening!
Just the other day, I decided to redesign the logo.
Tumblr media
I wanted to connect the H’s and make them flippable. As you can see, I also decided to — not exactly rename Handmade Hearts, but I made the logo with the German “Herz,” which means “heart” (pronounced like if the “ear” in “hearts” sounded like “air”). It felt appropriate. I’m going to see about registering my business with the German government once I have my long term residence permit that allows me to work. Once I have all the legal stuff sorted, I will be opening up again on the newly launched Artisans Cooperative markeplace.
Tumblr media
I already have my own page on the marketplace, and I’ve even bought in as a member-owner. The price to share in co-operative ownership is anything between $1,000 on the spot and $10 combined with essentially working for the Coop in my own time over the next year. Can you guess what option I chose? (Hint: I’m not exactly employed at the moment.)
Before I joined the Artisans Coop, I was and still am involved with the Indie Sellers Guild. I run their official Tumblr and help to verify new members. Current projects we’ve got going on there include:
Pressuring Etsy to let up on its harmful business practices
Working with U.S. legislators to pass a bill to crack down on resell scams
Developing a program to accredit online marketplaces using university-funded research
I should note, my joining the Artisans Cooperative won’t mean that I’m leaving Ko-Fi. My page there is very useful for one-off donations, and I might someday use it for monthly donations à la Patreon. I might cross-post listings for reach, too. Details… are still a bit loose.
Hold on, monthly donations? For what?
I’m glad you asked! For full access to my patterns — and probably discounts to other things. I’ve been doing a lot of work to write and test my original crochet patterns. So far, I’ve had one pattern fully tested and uploaded, with plans for much, much more.
Germany, co-ops, guilds, patterns… It’s a lot going on. Here’s a paragraph to breathe. I hope you’ll stick with me to the end of the post. Please remember, while I have the support of my partner and community, I am just one body and brain. (And I’m working with not entirely abled versons of each.) If it seems as though things should be happening faster or more efficiently, do keep that in mind.
I haven’t even discussed my inventory yet.
Since the beginning, I’ve been contemplating and recontemplating what I wanted to sell. I knew from the start that I wanted to design it all myself; that’s what makes experimenting and pattern-writing so important. Now, I’m close to a solid decision, and I love to make animal plushies and embroidery art.
While working on the aforementioned legal stuff, I’ve been building an inventory of original animal plushies (some of them cat toys), bags, fidget balls, bracelets, hats, and scarves. All of it is crocheted, though I’d like to expand into knitted and sewn items in the future. I am working on multiple amigurumi cat designs, and a songbird design. There will also be further work and testing on the snake pattern –– and it’s not just the shapes; no, I’ve developed designs for tapestry crochet that are yet to be redrafted into something testable.
I don’t have much of anything embroidered in my inventory yet. I’ve been commissioned once for some art, and I’m content for now to keep it at commissions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Embroidery wasn’t even on my radar when I first decided to make Handmade Herz, but I have fallen in love with it. I’m currently putting some practice into portrait embroidery, which may end up becoming a staple of HH if all goes well.
A lot of loose threads we’re weaving… and I don’t even know how to weave.
You may be wondering about the title of this blog post, “An Engaged Update.” I thought it was a little bit punny, or it might be if I’ve managed to make this engaging.
I am engaged!
I have been, technically, for some time, but now it’s on a legal level. I’ll be getting married in late November. The original plan was to get married in summer, so I went ahead a few months ago and made my partner a “wedding” dress just in time for the July pride parade in our city.
Tumblr media
This dress was the most ambitious project I have ever taken on, if only because it is a wearable of that many stitches. I was so afraid of getting it wrong! But it turned out beautiful and comfortable, and a proof of concept for my ability to make wearables this big. Someday, I hope to include original clothing designs in my inventory.
Thanks for reading to the end. I will try to write more frequent blog posts, hopefully with more narrow themes. I’ve still yet to be a vendor at a craft market, partly because of everything going on and partly because I’m very nervous. I will be writing something up about my experience when it finally happens.
Stay strong.
