Ksudach’s Nested Calderas and Craters
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station captured this photograph of Ksudach, a volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The peninsula is one of the world’s most active volcanic arcs due to tectonic plate movement, with the Pacific Plate subducting under the Eurasian Plate.
Several overlapping calderas and craters comprise the volcano. Calderas are large, bowl-shaped depressions created by the collapse of overlying material into an emptied subsurface magma chamber. Craters are circular depressions created by volcanic activity, surface impacts, or explosions. The most recent activity of the volcanic complex occurred in 1907, producing Stubel Crater in the northern portion of the caldera.
Water accumulated in Stubel Crater and formed Shtyubela Lake, which feeds the Khodutka River. The large waterbody toward the south, Klyuchevoye Lake, is endorheic, which means it lacks an outlet. Lakes within the volcanic region are primarily recharged by rain and snowmelt from the winter season. This photo shows the water’s contrasting blue hues surrounded by green vegetation.
Traces of snow fill valleys within and outside the volcano’s caldera complex. These snow-covered areas highlight the drainage patterns from higher to lower elevations. Water that flows through these erosional pathways and into the caldera supports its vegetation and lakes.
Astronaut photograph ISS069-E-71132 was acquired on August 19, 2023, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 1,150 millimeters. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 69 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. "Top Gun" School will modernize its F-16
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 08/18/2023 - 19:46 in Military
The U.S. Navy awarded a contract worth US$818 million to the U.S. government defense engineering company, Amentum, which is expected to allow the support and modernization of the "Aggressor" unit equipped with F-16 fighter planes operating inside the famous "Top Gun" school.
The F-16 multimission fighter is not part of the U.S. Navy's endowment but is used in a certain number to simulate enemy fighters. Since 1998, the U.S. Navy has used 26 units of the F-16 (22 monoplaces and 4 biplaces). In 2002, 14 other F-16 fighters initially planned for the Pakistan Air Force joined the prestigious "Top Gun" school at Fallon Naval Station in Nevada.
The F-16 aircraft thus complement the old Northrop F-5 E/F Tiger II, the F/A-18 Hornet and a first squadron of F-35s to simulate the latest generation of Chinese aircraft in particular. But also very useful for working on combat tactics against 5ª generation stealth aircraft.
As part of the modernization of the F-16 "Aggressor", the company Amentum will ensure the operational maintenance of the F-16 A/B/C/D aircraft and will ensure the full maintenance of the system and the support of the supply chair to ensure the continuity of flight operations. During the term of the contract, Amentum will help the U.S. Navy increase its F-16 "Aggressor" fleet at all locations.
Under the Contractor Logistics Support (CLS) contract, Amentum will provide technical, support and logistics solutions for U.S. Navy F-16 aircraft based in Fallon, Nevada.
This contract begins on August 31, 2023, has a base period of five years and an option period of three years, and is contracted through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) supporting the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) and the Naval Air Force Reserve, Tactical Support Wing (TSW).
One of Amentum's main objectives will be to track the cracks that appear in some of the cell partitions. This problem is not unique to F-16, it occurs in virtually all cells over time. The F-16 is designed to support a load of up to 9 Gs with a lifespan of 8,000 flight hours. In addition, the wing hardpoints have been reinforced to support the expected higher G rates. A consequence of extreme dogfights inside the "Top Gun". By strengthening this part of the aircraft, it is possible that a weaker link has been created elsewhere.
Amentum is a global leader in engineering, project management and solution integration, trusted to modernize the most critical missions in the world. Supported by a strong culture of ethics, safety and inclusion, Amentum is strongly committed to operational excellence and successful execution. Headquartered in Chantilly, Virginia, the company employs more than 44,000 employees.

“Forniture obsolete all’Ucraina”: accusati esercito e contractor

Western Australia’s Capital City
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photograph of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. Perth is located along Australia’s Indian Ocean coastline and is divided by the Swan and Canning rivers. This photo shows how the metropolitan area overlies the river basin, with arms stretching along the riverbanks toward Fremantle Harbour. Angular patterns of agricultural fields (bottom of the image) contrast with the urban cityscape spanning most of the image.
The land surface of Perth is a mixture of residential houses colored by pinkish-red roofs and commercial or industrial areas indicated by light-colored roofs. Perth is Australia’s fourth largest metropolitan area by population and is the only city along its western coastline with more than 1 million people. Perth Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country and is a hub for both passenger and air freight transit. The city’s central business district and the state’s Parliament House are situated near the intersection of the Swan and Canning rivers.
Fremantle Harbour is located at the mouth of the Swan River. The port handles a variety of goods entering and exiting the country, including grains, petroleum, and agricultural fertilizers. The surrounding municipality of Fremantle is historically significant as one of the oldest European settlements within Perth. It is known for its rich architectural history, with several of its original limestone-walled buildings still standing.
Within the urban landscape, the dark green color of wetland and brushland ecosystems stands out. Bold Park and Kings Park are located between the northern banks of the Swan River and the Indian Ocean. These native landscapes provide habitat for land animals and migratory birds, including the splendid fairy-wren and the black-striped snake. In southern Perth, Beeliar Park is comprised of wetlands and seasonal freshwater lakes that typically dry up during the summer months. Thomsons Lake, located at the southern extent of Beeliar Park, was designated a Ramsar wetland area due to its importance as a bird refuge and mating ground for endangered species such as the Australasian bittern.
