With 9M CR-Vs sold globally, Honda debuts its CR-V Hybrid
The Honda CR-V has an incredible record of global sales. More than 9 million CR-Vs have been sold worldwide in 150 countries since ’95. In the USA, a total of 384,168 CR-Vs were sold in 2019 alone (wheelsjoint.com). In the SUV market, it ranks second only to the Toyota RAV4.
Tumblr media
By John Coulter, CURRENT EV CMO
Launched in Japan in 1995, the CR-V became one of the pioneer models of what has become the highly popular Compact SUV segment. It quickly established itself as a favorite with customers looking for a sturdy, reliable vehicle with low maintenance costs.
The core of the vehicle’s popularity is its combination of efficiency, functionality, simple style, safety and legendary Honda quality. The average estimate for repair bills for the first and second years is $0! The average maintenance cost for the first year of driving is $190.
Depreciation is minimal as well, accounting for only 10.582% its first year and 8.88% its second year.
The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid crossover retains the same basic design and features as its 2020 predecessor. Few changes have been implemented, as 2020 was the year when the CR-V received its 4th Generation makeover and the hybrid version debuted. The 2021 hybrid uses a 2.0L 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine mated with 2 electric motors and a small 1.4kWh battery. Together, they generate 212hp and 232 lb-ft of torque, and provide what is considered the best engine performance in its segment.
With a 0 to 60 sprint of 7.5 seconds, it is not what any reviewer would call a fast car. But what its drivers like is its linear power delivery; it has no gears to shift, making the drive incredibly smooth. And the vehicle’s torque output of 232 lb-ft with its gas engine and two electric motors working bests the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid, its two closest competitors. Rather than a super fast family hauler, it’s a comfy city cruiser which gets you where you want to go, smoothly, safely and inexpensively.
Fuel Economy is excellent. The EPA estimates the 2021 CR-V will provide you with 40mpg city, 35mpg highway and 38 combined. The hybrid’s total range is 440 miles.

The Daily Tulip – News From Around The World
Tuesday 31st July 2018
Good Morning Gentle Reader….  My day to go to Malaga so up earlier than usual, in an attempt to get everything that need’s doing.. Done…Today, I’m going to relax on the beach while I wait for Sandra to finish the cataracts operations, just me and the sound of the waves washing lazily against the shore, I don’t even bother with music, just the soft sound of the waves is enough while I recharge the batteries, what about Bella I hear you ask, she’s at home with my son David, who will take good care of her till I get home…
EGYPT ZOO ACCUSED OF PAINTING DONKEY TO LOOK LIKE A ZEBRA…. A zoo in Egypt has denied painting black stripes on a donkey to make it look like a zebra after a photo of the animal appeared online. Student Mahmoud Sarhan put the images on Facebook after visiting Cairo's International Garden municipal park. Aside from its small size and pointy ears, there were also black smudges on its face. The pictures quickly went viral, with experts weighing in on the species of the animal. A vet contacted by local news group Extranews.tv said that a zebra's snout is black, while its stripes are more consistent and parallel. Mr Sarhan told Extranews that the enclosure contained two animals and that both had been painted. When contacted by local radio station Nogoum FM, zoo director Mohamed Sultan insisted the animal was not a fake. This is not the first time that a zoo has been accused of trying to fool its audience. Unable to find a way around the Israeli blockade, a zoo in Gaza painted two donkeys to look like zebras in 2009. Another Gaza zoo put stuffed animals on display in 2012 because of the shortages of animals.
AIR INDIA BLAMES WEATHER FOR BED BUGS INFESTATION…. India's national carrier, Air India, has blamed the weather for a bed bug infestation on one of its recent flights from New York to the western city of Mumbai. Photos of a few business class passengers bitten by bed bugs were widely shared online in the past week. Air India has since apologised and ordered an inquiry. It also promised to "rigorously fumigate" the plane. Adding to its woes, the company has lost market share to new entrants and suffers a bad reputation of having poor service and cancelling flights. A few years ago, an Air India plane travelling from Mumbai to London was forced to turn back mid-flight after a rat was spotted on board.
IRAN GENERAL WARNS TRUMP WAR WOULD 'DESTROY ALL YOU POSSESS'…. An Iranian special forces commander has warned President Donald Trump if the US attacks Iran it "will destroy all that you possess". Major General Qassem Soleimani vowed that if Mr Trump started a war, the Islamic Republic would end it, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported. It follows Mr Trump's all-caps-lock tweet warning Iran's president to "never, ever" threaten the US. Tensions have risen since the US withdrew from the 2015 Iran deal. Maj Gen Soleimani - who leads the Quds Force of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards - was quoted on Thursday as saying: "As a soldier, it is my duty to respond to your threats. "Talk to me, not to the president [Hassan Rouhani]. It is not in our president's dignity to respond to you. "We are near you, where you can't even imagine. Come. We are ready. "If you begin the war, we will end the war. You know that this war will destroy all that you possess." He also accused the US president of using the language of "night clubs and gambling halls".
DUTCH GRITTERS SALT ROADS TO STOP ASPHALT MELTING….The Netherlands is going through a heatwave this week, like much of northwestern Europe, and several councils have chosen a novel way to stop roads from melting in the scorching sun - they've called the gritter lorries out. Road-users in Arnhem were surprised to see the gritters scattering salt at busy junctions this week, but it seems that salt can be used not only to provide traction in freezing conditions but also to stop asphalt from melting, according to the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper. The winter visitors have also been seen on the roads of Groningen, Hoorn and Geldermalsen in the last two days, especially at roundabouts where heavy traffic tears the softened asphalt from the road surface. The councils say salt helps by attracting moisture from the ambient air and cooling the asphalt. It also removes excess moisture from the asphalt, making it less sticky. Arnhem council has been monitoring the road-surface temperature with sensors, and decided that when it reached 50 degrees Celsius the moment had come to act. "That's the time for us to start spreading the salt. And if the heatwave continues, the gritters will be out and about more often", a council spokesman told the ANP news agency.
JAPANESE FIRM TO LAUNCH WEDDING PLAQUES INTO SPACE…. A Japanese company is offering newlyweds a novel way of showing that their love is eternal: by blasting wedding plaques with their names on into space. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the Warpspace start-up in the city of Tsukuba is working with Kibo, Japan's orbital science module, to launch wedding plaques from the International Space Station. The company, which is largely staffed by faculty members from the University of Tsubuka, says that it will engrave couples' names, messages, and other information on titanium plaques, measuring some 16 millimetres by eight millimetres. The plaques will then be loaded onto miniature cubic satellites, which can hold several hundred plaques, and be released into orbit. They will join the tens of thousands of satellites, man-made objects and space junk already orbiting the Earth. Astronauts will take photos of the plaques being released and send them to the couples. Explaining the reason behind the company, Warpspace's president Toshihiro Kameda tells Yomiuri Shimbun: "I hope couples will think about space and pledge their infinite love to each other." Warpspace says it will carry out its first launch in 2019. The cost of the service is 30,000 Japanese Yen (£205; $270) and is exclusively offered to couples who marry at Tsukuba's Okura Frontier Hotel.

It's All About 2018 Nissan Maxima Trims
Tumblr media
The Nissan Maxima isn't like major of other sedans you might be considering. It's sportier than the classic family sedan but is priced more and equipped more like a large sedan. It could even be an alternative for an entry - segment luxury motor. As such, the Maxima is mostly a niche offering, but one with undeniable demand.
Nissan has long called the Maxima a "four-door sports car". Of course, the phrase is mostly marketing hype. But the Maxima handles pretty well when you're driving around turns and comes standard with a powerful V6 engine. There's even a sporty SR trim with unique suspension tuning and performance-oriented driver aids.
If you are looking for a sedan with equal parts sportiness and unpretentious luxury, the 2018 Nissan Maxima is certainly worth checking out.
2018 Nissan Maxima Models
The 2018 Nissan Maxima sedan comes in five trim levels: the base; S, midlevel SV, a little more expensive SL, sporty SR, and the top-level Platinum.
Like all Maximas, the S is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine - 300 horsepower, 261 pound-feet of torque that contracts the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
General features include; LED daytime running lights, foglights, remote engine start, keyless entry and ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, adjustable driving modes power-adjustable front seats - eight-way driver and four-way passenger, a 60/40-split rear seat, a navigation system, two USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, an 8-inch touchscreen and an eight-speaker audio system with a satellite radio and a CD player.
Common safety systems include a rearview camera and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
The Maxima SV adds leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, heated mirrors, heated front seats, and an updated driver seat with extendable thigh support and two-way power lumbar adjustment. The SL doesn't cost much more, and its impressive list of extra features includes a dual-panel sunroof, active noise reduction, adaptive cruise control, dynamic engine sound enhancement, ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The SR adds performance enhancements to the SL, with 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, column-mounted paddle shifters, Active Ride Control utilizes the brakes to stabilize body motions over bumpy roads. Active Trace Control for targeted braking to keep the vehicle on its intended path avoiding mishap and active engine braking that help slow the car when heading aggressively into corners or approaching a stop. The panoramic sunroof is detached, but the SR does add a few luxury features, including LED headlights, upgraded leather upholstery with quilted simulated suede seat inserts unique interior trim and ventilated front seats.
The Midnight Edition package black-painted wheels and a rear spoiler with exterior styling elements, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, driver-seat memory settings, and a 360-degree parking camera) are optional for the SR.
The top-model Platinum does away with some of the SR's additions, though it retains the LED headlights and ventilated front seats. It then adds automatic wipers, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, a 360-degree parking camera, a power-adjustable steering column, driver-seat memory settings, a six-way power passenger seat, upgraded leather upholstery, and interior trim, a rear power sunshade and NissanConnect services (remote start, automatic collision notification, emergency calling, and stolen vehicle location
The 2018 Nissan Maxima sedan comes in five segments:
the base S, midlevel SV, the slightly more expensive SL, sporty SR, and the top-level Platinum.
Interior
Nissan's electronics mechanism is a home run machine of 2018 Nissan Maxima. It's both - looks good and easy to a rare perk. Various luxury car tech built-up are confusing and overly complicated to utilization. Cargo space and storage are suitable for the segment. Moreover, the Maxima is moderate with space for people to accommodate.
Engine And Performance
The Nissan Maxima isn't quite the "four-door sports car" Nissan declares. But it is remarkable for a midsize sedan, with little more than-average handling and strong acceleration from the 300-horsepower V6, 0 - 60 mph in 6.1 seconds is quick but typical for a V6-powered midsize sedan. The CVT is seamlessly smooth during light acceleration and simulates gears when accelerating hard. Torque steer from the front-wheel-drive powertrain is noticeable.
Entertainment
The infotainment system has big icons and sensible menus, a redundant knob controller, and well-placed physical buttons. Overall, it's easy to use and an excellent example of how to do it right.

True wireless headset originator Bragi sells hardware business, how to save the headset brand under the big factory
According to Wareable, German wireless headset manufacturer Bragi announced that it has sold its wearable business and officially withdrew from the hardware market. Bragi CEO Nikolaj Hviid said that Bragi will then focus on artificial intelligence technology and IP licensing instead of producing new equipment.
Currently, Bragi does not disclose the identity of the buyer. According to industry news, buyers are likely to be Fitbit, a US wearable device manufacturer. Bragi and Fitbit did not respond to this.
2014 crowdfunding debut
Leading Apple to launch the world's first true wireless headset for two years
As the "original" of true wireless headphones, Bragi left the impression of the first TWS products and the avant-garde technology they carry.
Tumblr media
Before the AirPods detonated the market, Bragi had already made the world's first truly true wireless headset. In February 2014, Bragi's first true wireless headset, Dash, went live with Kickstarter, which earned eyeballs with an unprecedented split-headset design. As of the end of crowdfunding, Dash received more than $3.3 million in funding and overfulfilled the mission.
Like many star startups in the same period, Bragi's founding team members have deep technical and industrial backgrounds, all from traditional audio companies such as Harman and AKG, and are determined to create an unconventional product from scratch. At the same time, like many star teams, they hope to occupy the industry to the high ground from the moment they make the sound.
Their goal is to make Dash a "computer on the ear."
Indeed, Dash, which appeared two years earlier than AirPods, has almost captured the hot technical points of today's true wireless headsets:
• Fully wireless technology, separation of left and right ears;
• Built-in 27 sensors can track the wearer's heart rate, calories, steps, breathing, rhythm, and other parameters, as well as record the time and distance of the exercise;
• Provide MP3 playback with 4GB of memory;
• Equipped with an ear bone microphone to achieve radio reception in noisy environments;
• Also, use a moving iron unit that is not available for general Bluetooth headsets.
2015 high-profile publicity
Maintain product heat
Dash's many advanced technology blessings also raise concerns about whether this product can really be mass-produced. However, Bragi has maintained the attention of everyone as much as possible before this. The typical routine is to showcase Dash at the CES 2015 in the crowdfunding highlights and give the media a batch of testers in advance.
Despite the lack of product experience, Dash's original beta version also earned a lot of praise during this period, and the mainstream media have thrown high praise. For example, Engadget named it "2015 CES Digital/Healthy Best Product", and Time magazine named Dash "2015 One of CES's most original smart devices."
2016 parity play
Officially shipped two years later, also released low-end machines to fight Apple
Until March 2016, after two years, the first batch of users who participated in crowdfunding began to receive Dash.
Dash basically embodies Bragi's technology accumulation in the field of true wireless headphones. But at the same time as "showing muscles", Bragi also tried to think about the direction of the product line during the polishing process. After all, when the technology is not fully mature, the excessive price is not conducive to the popularity of the product, they are also another The product is ready.
Immediately before the release of Apple's first AirPods in September of the same year, Bragi launched The Headphone, a new generation of TWS products.
The headphone is equivalent to the cheap version of Dash. It has some castration in function and design: one side of the touch panel is replaced by a physical button, the original motion tracking function and memory are removed, so the battery life is also improved from the original 3 hours. It took 6 hours. The price is also half the price of the original - $ 149, the same price as AirPods, it is obviously called Apple.
2017 high-end play
Return to the high-end, the main difference
As Apple AirPods quickly leads the trend and captures half of the market, mobile phone and headset manufacturers are reluctant to miss this trend.
In the face of AirPods, the shortcomings of similar products of different brands are also obvious, especially the problem of Bluetooth disconnection. Bragi, which was first involved in the field of true wireless headphones, is no exception.
In 2017, Bragi launched an upgraded version of Dash Pro, its original Dash, repositioning the mid to high end for $349.
This generation of Dash Pro focuses on Bluetooth connectivity issues, with the new Bragi OS 3.0 system, iTranslate translation support (fees apply), and support for translation in 40 languages. At the same time, Dash's 4GB memory, waterproof, heart rate monitoring and other functions have returned.
In addition, Dash Pro is also slightly innovative in interaction: based on the sensor on the body (also 27), the user can control the virtual 4D menu by shaking the head, such as setting the shaking head to reject the call on the phone. /Switch songs, nod to answer calls, etc.
Bragi's move once again provided a reference model for the industry.
2018 fades out of sight
Stopping new products and busy with business sales
However, Bragi, who has high-profile admissions and inspirational high-end and differentiated markets, still have no firm foothold.
Since last year, Bragi has gradually faded out of the market and stopped the pace of new products. Until January 2019, the company's website page showed that the whole line was out of stock. During the period, news about the company’s “closed” and the search for companies such as Google and Fitbit to talk about the sale of the business was reported.
Where is 2019?
Hardware is not sold much, technical patents can be counted
From the current situation, the global true wireless headset industry has also formed a preliminary industry structure, of which Apple is still far ahead.
According to Counterpoint's latest report, in 2018, Apple's TWS has a global share of 60%, followed by Apple, followed by Jabra, Samsung, JLab, QCY, Huawei, Bose, Sony, etc., all from the traditional Audio product manufacturers and smartphone brands have expanded their smart terminal peripheral products.
Bragi, which is mainly engaged in TWS, failed to squeeze into the top 15 in the world.
Regarding Bragi's fading out of the hardware market, some media believe that it is mainly affected by Apple AirPods.
Among them, Bragi Headphone is a cheap version designed specifically for AirPods competition but did not achieve the expected results. In addition, Headphone and AirPods share the same price and function, which is not obvious to users, especially the majority of fruit users.
Bragi's sale of wearables is also a compromise to keep the company up and running.
According to a data in the middle of 2018, there are more than 500 patent applications involving smart wireless headset related technologies worldwide, among the top companies with applications, except Apple, Samsung, LG, Koss, and other established vendors. In addition, Bragi is included.
It can be seen that in the past few years, Bragi has spent a lot of energy on TWS related technology research and development.
In the trend of TWS headsets booming, Bragi is hard to make hardware and not make money after all. It is better to continue to study technology and promote the technology to land on the equipment.

2021 Mercedes S-Class: 2 HUD Sizes, Level 3 Autonomy, 4D Sound, 5 LCDs
Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse, 2020, Outdoor, Fahraufnahme, Exterieur: Diamantweiß // Mercedes-Benz S-Class, 2020, outdoor, driving shot, exterior: diamond white
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan will envelop the driver and passengers in unparalleled layers of comfort, safety, technology, and — this is a German car, after all — performance. Most active and passive safety technology comes standard, which is both good and about what you’d expect when the least expensive S-Class sold in the US starts at $96,000 (estimated).
The S-Class sold fewer than 71,000 units worldwide last year, mostly in China, Germany, and the US. But the midsize E-Class and compact E-Class each sold five times as many units, and much of the S-Class tech trickles down quickly. (Total 2019 Mercedes, Daimler, and Smart sales: 2.4 million.)
The US market gets the long-wheelbase S-Class only, which is 208 inches long. It will feature V6, V8, and plug-in hybrid versions; no diesel or four-cylinder here. Also, there’s no pure-electric S-Class anywhere; that will arrive as a separate Mercedes EQS model. US S-Class delivery is expected in the middle of 2021.
The new S-Class has as many as five flat-panel displays, some OLED, and four ways to access and control the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX): voice, finger/fingerprint, face/gaze, and speech.
The outgoing MBUX interface: dual 12-inch LCDs, HVAC outlets below the center display.
Here’s our take on the S-Class’s striking array of new technology based on early data from Mercedes — in particular, from a background document of 60 pages or 24,000 words:
The driver will see a 12-inch flat panel display with switchable 3D effects, and with no 3D glasses needed. A squarish center stack “media display” sits below the four HVAC outlets. This means it’s easier to touch but will require a bit more downward eye movement for the driver to center on. New display styles evoke the old Spice Girls: Discreet, Sporty, Exclusive, and Classic (no Posh, but that’s a given on this car), plus three modes called Navigation, Assistance, and Service. The center console shows no touchpad or control wheel, marking a point of departure from the iDrive concept BMW has used since 2001. This is daring, because iDrive, widely reviled 20 years ago, now tops many infotainment ratings.
The back seat can have three displays: two on the seatbacks, one in the center armrest.
Rear seat touchscreen display.
Mercedes spiffed up the back seat. In the white-hot China market, it’s where the owner sits. In the US, your kids will have gobs of legroom. Optionally, the rear seats recline and the seats have touchscreens, and there’s an available touchscreen controller in the armrest. The side windows can be shaded. An executive package lets the rear passenger opposite the driver move the front seat all the way forward. All of this is the optional stuff that puts the $96,000 base price far in the rearview mirror. But the average S-Class owner makes on the high side of $300,000 a year.
The “Hey Mercedes” voice recognition capabilities expand, Mercedes says, with cloud processing, more and more natural language queries, some commands (“accept call”) that don’t require the wake word, and control from the rear. The cockpit microphone array senses which speaker, and the ambient lighting, which contains more than 250 concealed LEDs, flashes at the speaker’s location.
The premium Burmeister audio system features 22 speakers, or a dozen shy of some poseur competitors — but hey, there’s quantity and there’s quality. According to Mercedes, it provides 4D audio — huh? If stereo is 2D and shaped multi-channel sound is 3D, the fourth D is a set of in-seat transducers that vibrate with the deepest parts of the music. At-home gamers already have vibrating seats to amplify the effects of their weaponry. Yes, it can be disabled.
In your face (gently): Rear seat occupants can have their own front-impact airbags.
Often it’s the guy in the back seat who has key man insurance, not the chauffeur. To make sure he or she is safe, too, the new S-Class offers airbags in the backs of the front seats to provide additional protection in a forward collision. The Mercedes graphic says they’re “fast and gentle.” That’s in addition to inflatable rear seat belts with mini-airbags that MB already uses and in addition to the side (door) airbags and the side head protection airbag that covers both front and rear windows.
The augmented reality version of the HUD equates to a 77-inch flat-panel monitor. The fishbones, or turning indicators, are overlaid exactly where you’re supposed to turn.
Not every automaker offers a head-up display (HUD). The S-Class will offer good and better HUDs, the latter with augmented reality. Translation: The car tracks where your eyes are. Navigation arrows (the “fishbones” in the image above) are presented so they appear on top of where you’re supposed to make a turn or bear off the highway onto an exit. How dumb can drivers be, you might think. But it’s easy to make a mistake if two exits 49A and 49B are 50 yards apart, if there are two left turns in the space of a very short block, if it’s really dark (less so with MB’s headlamp array), or if the driver is in his 50s or beyond (as is the average S-Class buyer).
The perceived HUD size is impressive, as Mercedes calculates it: “The aperture angle of the display is 10° horizontal and 5° vertical, and the image appears virtually at a distance of 32 feet. This display area corresponds to a monitor with a 77-inch diagonal.”
Every 2021 S-Class gets an air suspension. With active body control, if a collision is imminent, it rises up 3 inches to better absorb impacts.
The four roundish towers in the photo above comprise the air-controlled suspension system (as opposed to hydraulic shock absorbers and steel springs). The AirMatic suspension is standard, with continuously adjustable damping. Optional is E-Active Body Control, which leans the car into a turn, like an airplane banks. If radar sensors predict a side crash, the body is lifted 3 inches to more of the impact is absorbed by the door sill (the unibody frame).
Mercedes barely mentions it, but the suspension actually regenerates energy with every up and down oscillation. It’s enough to help re-energize the 48-volt battery controlling it. Not enough to make this a perpetual motion machine. Optionally, forward-facing sensors can scan the road ahead, 1,000 times per second, for imperfections and adjust the suspension to deal with potholes and speed bumps. Things like predictive suspension travel are not new to Mercedes or the S-Class. But the sum of all the new and the enhanced features make this a car apart from BMW, Audi, etcetera. Until their next new model or refresh.
The new S-Class has V2I communications via cellular, potentially V2V as well.
Mercedes will enable some shared safety signaling, apparently via cellular rather than separate DSRC radios. In this Mercedes schematic above, a car in an accident can send a warning to the cloud (and also reach out the Mercedes call center), the driver can manually warn other vehicles of an incident via the cloud, and dangers such as glare ice can be autodetected (by wheel slip sensors) and communicated to police or highway maintenance crews. Just like fax machines, one such car has no impact; two is the minimum to do anything, and when you have a million, it becomes really useful. It’s also more useful when cars can signal each other directly, unless there is zero lag going vehicle to infrastructure (the cloud) to vehicle.
The S-Class in Europe will be capable of Level 3 self-driving. Many cars today do Level 2, where the driver has to be — is supposed to be — 100 percent attentive while the car steers, accelerates, and brakes. Here, Mercedes says, L3 represents a freeway “conditionally automated mode [up to 37 mph / 60 kph, allowing for] “secondary activities such as the in-car office.” Or really long texts. The driver would have to be ready to take over with some advance notice; it’s uncertain if that’s three seconds or 60.
With up to 10 degrees of rear-wheel steering, the S-Class can back into tight spaces. The cool tri-star paint job, alas, is only on the prototype car.
The new S-Class is just one inch shorter than the base Ford F-150. So how do you navigate the narrow streets of Europe or the clogged streets of LA? With rear-wheel steering. Here, too, there are two options, and the premium version allows up to 10 degrees (a lot) of steer angle. It cuts six feet off the turning radius, down to about 36 feet, and makes it possible to back into more parking spaces.
Rear-wheel steering opposes the front steering angle at parking lot speeds. On the highway, all four wheels steer in the same direction.
On the highway when making lane changes, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts, and the car crabs sideways. It’s smoother that way. Wheel alignments cost more, but that’s like asking the cost of yacht fuel. If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.
This is a car worth waiting for. Since there’ll only 10,000-15,000 sold in the US in the first full year, what’s equally important is how it trickles down to more approachable (cheaper) Benzes, starting with the next-gen compact C-Class that follows the S-Class by 6-9 months. Mercedes is said to be aggressively porting key features such as the multimedia system, MBUX, the bigger (but not Lexus-big) front grille, and the augmented-reality displays.
It’s also important with the long term trend of migration to big cities (on hold with coronavirus issues currently), where affluent buyers want all the safety, tech, and luxury features of a full-size car in a midsize or compact that fits more easily into available urban parking spaces. It gives makers of mainstream cars targets to aim at. You can’t cheaply replicate four-wheel steering, but it may make lead to rear airbags, maybe illuminated seat belt buckles, and bigger if not huge center stack displays. The claimed 60-mile range for a plug-in hybrid is also an enviable target.

9 Factors that Cause Sleep Sensor Artifact
9 Factors that Cause Sleep Sensor Artifact See more on: Elly Mackay's Sleep Blog
And how to troubleshoot them during a sleep study.
By Heather Linderfelt
Sleep technologists play an essential role in identifying and correcting artifact—unwanted signals, physiological or non-physiological—during polysomnography (PSG).
According to Todd Eiken, RPSGT, FAAST, vice president of product development at Dymedix Diagnostics, “it is critically important that a sleep disorders technologist, as well as an interpreting physician, identify and eliminate artifact that occurs during a PSG. Artifact can mask or reduce the visibility of clinically significant PSG information and also create false-positive and false-negative results.”
Below are 9 common factors that can cause sleep artifact and how to correct them.
Factor 1: Patient sweat
Brad Dotson, RRT, RPSGT, director of sales and marketing at Neurotronics, advises that the temperature in the sleep study room can impact sweat artifact. “Obstructive sleep apnea patients tend to sweat profusely. Having the ability to lower room temperature via air conditioning or fan can reduce sweat artifact,” he says, adding that sweat artifact can cause channels move in a swaying motion away from and back to their baseline.
Amy Schwarz, BSRT, RRT-SDS, clinical product support specialist for Philips, recommends that it is best to “keep the patient room a little cooler than for patient comfort.”
Factor 2: Lead wires
Mike Olmsted, president/CEO of ElectraMed Corp, offers several solutions for artifacts caused by lead wires.
The first is use the right wire for the job. “Do not mix different style leads of different lengths, cup configurations, and properties within an input channel,” he says.
Bundling wires together instead of allowing them to just hang free between the acquisition amplifier and sleep subject helps to reduce noise artifact and stabilize the baseline.
“It is also a good idea to change reusable wires at least once a year,” he adds. “As these wires age, the impedance will increase. It may not be broken, but it can still impact your impedance levels.”
Factor 3: Snore sensors
“Snoring sensors can be challenging due to the sensor being attached to the skin and exposed to sweat, pressure, accidental high pressure, and other interference,” says Sarah Paddock, director of sales and marketing for SLP. Obtaining optimal signals from snore sensors depends on constant contact with the patient’s skin and a good seal against ambient noises. Taping the sensor securely should eliminate any movement artifact.
Factor 4: Respiratory effort sensors
When monitoring respiratory effort, the identification of paradoxical respiratory movements can help indicate upper airway obstruction in the case of mild sleep-disordered breathing. “However, if the location of thoracic or abdominal effort belts shift during a PSG study, analysis of paradoxical respiratory movements become invalid,” says Eiken, who suggests taping the belts in place prior to beginning the study. “This ensures that the chest belt is displaying only chest movement and the abdominal belt is displaying only abdominal movement,” he says.
And don’t over-tighten the belts. “Position belts on the patient to fit comfortably snug when the patient is on their side,” Neurotronics’ Dotson says. “Over-tightened belts will cause the signal to square out during the study.” If the belts are too loose, any movement (even airflow) will generate a signal that is not originated in the scope of the belt.
Factor 5: Electrical devices
With smart watches, such as the Apple Watch, and other wearable electronics becoming more common, techs need to check for these devices before starting a sleep study. “Any electrical devices such as phones, tablets, or headphones should be kept out of reach and away from the patient, headbox, and amplifier,” Schwarz says. “These devices can cause electrical interference, which will present as artifacts during the study.”
Factor 6: Motion
Motion artifact cannot be avoided during a study. When the patient moves, some of the electrodes do not read as well. “Referencing the signal may correct a disturbed signal,” says Schwarz. “If that does not correct the issue, re-prepping may be necessary.”
In some cases, noise from static changes generated by friction against bed linen, cable movement noise, attenuation of the desired signal due to sweat, as well as other factors can mean the difference between a workable recording and constant troubleshooting. “Careful placement as well as securing the sensor will help greatly with regards to reducing unnecessary artifact,” Paddock says.
Factor 7: Pressure flow sensors and pressure monitoring cannulas
As with any sensor, it is critical to insulate the sensitive element from any interference that is not related to the measured signal.
It is also important that the sensor being used (pressure sensor/pressure transducer) minimizes the signal filtering as much as possible—this allows greater flexibility in selecting post filtering of the raw signal without eliminating parts of the wave that may become important in analysis. Too much filtering or switches in the signal can lead to additional electrical noise.
“In addition, disposable cannula filters can aid in the prevention of humidity inside the luer and help reduce the possibility of infection,” says Paddock.
Factor 8: Frequencies and filters
Techs should be aware of the range of frequencies to which a particular sensor is intended to respond. By using low and high pass filters, techs can reduce or eliminate other frequencies that are not of interest. For example, monitoring of respiratory-related parameters is focused on slow frequencies. “As a result, adjusting the low pass filter to eliminate unwanted faster frequencies can be helpful in reducing artifacts,” says Eiken.
Schwarz recommends checking the filters—although there are American Academy of Sleep Medicine-recommended filter settings, they are not required. Sometimes filtering out a signal too much can also cause artifact. “Apply filters as needed; don’t automatically apply them without checking the signal first,” she says. A QRS filter is also sometimes helpful for removing electrocardiogram artifacts in leg leads.
Factor 9: Transmitting devices
Anything can cause artifacts and transmitting devices, such as wireless routers, keyboards, and monitors, are particularly bad offenders when it comes to sensor artifact (and similar devices). Suspect everything and remember that electrical interference can pass through walls and floors/ceilings. So the source of the interference may be in an adjacent room or even in the office on the floor above. Especially suspect interference when an artifact appears and disappears in what seems like random times. “Be a careful observer when troubleshooting and try disconnecting any suspected device, without switching it off first,” says Paddock.
Avoid florescent lighting whenever possible. Move any devices with electric motors (such as fans), non-medical devices (radio, television, watches) and any power cables as far away from the patient as possible. Make sure the beds with metal frames are properly grounded. Try to keep the air humidity at 50% to prevent static charge build up. Arrange the headbox so that the sensor wires do not rest on any electrical devices or swing too freely.
Artifacts can destroy good data and the sleep tech’s job is to recognize the factors that can cause artifacts and neutralize them, capturing only the subject’s true data during what is hopefully a restful, good night’s sleep.
