[hometown redacted] changes a little bit every time I go back and it's usually for worse, but it's a mixed bag.
Example: two of the biggest topics at various events with family and friends this week were the installation of [hometown redacted]'s first traffic roundabout and associated controversy about whether we need something so European in town, and the new Bucee's gas station just outside of town which I've gathered is an excellent place to stop for a shit on account of the cleanliness of the bathrooms.

That last ask made me check my Ingram Spark rates because I couldn't remember some stuff, and in case you're wondering what book distribution in Australia is like right now:
Country: Australia Recommended price: $ 29.99 Retailer Discount: 40% Compensation to author: $ 0.15
A thirty dollar book, and the author is earning 15 cents.
So, yeah. If you're ever upset that you're favorite author isn't available down under, we're so sorry. This is why.
We're being gouged left, right and center by the industry, and it's honestly not much better for the rest of the world either.
I'm earning just under $4 per book on US sales ($2.80 on Amazon because, lol, I was so stressed with Ingram I forgot to update the Zon. Price changes are pending.) for a book, I was forced to mark up to $24.99 because Ingram Spark made the 40% discount to retailers mandatory* as well as increasing the fee they take, and if I'd kept my books at $17.99, they would have taken it off the market because I would have been earning negative dollars.
In the span of a single year, my book went from $14.99 to $17.99 to $24.99 because of "inflation." And I'm earning, uh, well, in some cases, 15 cents.
Capitalism 🌈✨🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪
----
*They are still pushing us to give retailers a 55% discount, or we won't be stocked in stores. Because, aha, fuck our lives, I guess. I also suspect Ingram are not actually giving that discount to retailers, but I can't prove it beyond a couple of book retailers reaching out to me and Ingram never acknowledged my emails, so doubly fuck my life I guess.

RS isn't the only place in Brazil in a climate crisis and we need to talk about it.
the main thing i've talked about on this blog since last friday (may 3rd) is the catastrophic floods devastating my home state, Rio Grande do Sul, located in southern Brazil. it's an unprecedent tragedy that we won't be able to recover from anytime soon. but we also can't ignore what's happening in the rest of the country, so i decided to extensively rant about it.
over the course of a week, these historic floods have taken over a state the size of Ecuador, raising the levels of rivers and wiping out entire cities. i've said it before and i'll say it again: this is not natural, although some smooth-brained people might say it is. the last flood of this magnitude in my state was the flood of 1941, which was a result of 24 days of continuous rain, raising the level of the Guaíba lake to 4.75 meters.
the floods we're facing now raised the level of the lake up to 5.30 meters. and it only rained for seven days.
Tumblr media
we all hear climate change deniers saying it's just the weather patterns, but it's impossible to deny the fact that human actions are changing them. we didn't have nearly as many torrential rainstorms here a couple years ago, not even in autumn (which is the usual season for it). yet, from 2022 to now, the frequency with which these occur have been cranked up to the max. i used to joke about how it rained every single week, but now it sounds less like a joke and more of a grim commentary on the sad reality we're living.
that's why, in addition to what's happening here, we really need to talk about the climate crisis in the other regions in Brazil.
the center-west and southeastern regions have been suffering from dry weather and a heatwave that has been going on for days (and will still go at LEAST up to may 10th). they are registering temperatures above 30° C/86°F, which means they are having perfect summer weather IN MID AUTUMN. i am not joking; São Paulo has registered an alarming temperature of 32° C/89,6°F, breaking the record for the highest temperature ever registered in a day of may for the last 81 years.
in the northeastern region, the end of last year was marked by an extreme drought intensified by the deforestation of the cerrado biome, which is crucial for maintaining water distribution. and this was basically in the countryside; the coast was the target of heavy torrential rains (and is currently under the threat of more rain). some cities registered an extreme and alarming 240mm of precipitation in just 24 HOURS.
and in the northern region and some parts of the center-west and northeastern regions, the number of wildfires from january to may is already the highest in recorded history (which began to be recorded in 1998 by Inpe): 17.421 spots. and the dry season in the biomes of the Amazon rainforest, cerrado, and pantanal HAS BARELY BEGUN. this is already a horrifying tragedy and it can become one of the worst catastrophes in the history of Brazil if we don't act on it fast.
ever single time something like this happens, scientists from all over the country (and all over the world) warn us of what can happen next. every single time, scientists extensively talk about the human actions that are directly and indirectly interfering with the environment. every single time, nobody listens. every. single. time.
and we still have time. we have the technology and the means to prevent this. and yet the government does absolutely NOTHING to help (hell, in my state only 0,2% of the budget was allocated to preventing climate disasters; an ABYSMALLY low R$50k, which is about US$9.850,00). everyone, and i mean EVERYONE, knows about the ever increasing frequency of extreme climate events. even the DENIERS WON'T DENY IT. this should be enough proof that we need to do something fast or we will irreversibly ruin the only place we can call home. but governments will always prioritize money over lives. always.
these disasters have always happened in Brazil, but they were far apart. this country should be blessed by god and beautiful by nature, like a popular song says. yet we are currently experiencing the worst climatic crisis we have ever seen here. and it will only get worse if we don't stop it now.

The new album "Lyric Suite" will be released on September 25th, but it seems that distribution is stalled for each online company for various reasons. Rakuten Books has completed the delivery of pre-orders, but it seems that orders have been temporarily stopped, perhaps because the product has been sold out. Amazon has stock and is expected to ship in 2-3 days. Tower Records and HMV are "on backorder," so does this mean that the first shipment has not arrived yet? The distribution center received the album on September 9th, so I don't know what they are doing. (We apologize for the inconvenience to those who have ordered, but please wait a little longer.) So, if you are planning to order from now on, Amazon is probably the fastest. In any case, I think distribution will resume within a week to 10 days, so I would appreciate it if you could wait patiently.

"Major technology companies signed a pact on Friday to voluntarily adopt "reasonable precautions" to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) tools from being used to disrupt democratic elections around the world.
Executives from Adobe, Amazon, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and TikTok gathered at the Munich Security Conference to announce a new framework for how they respond to AI-generated deepfakes that deliberately trick voters.
Twelve other companies - including Elon Musk's X - are also signing on to the accord...
The accord is largely symbolic, but targets increasingly realistic AI-generated images, audio, and video "that deceptively fake or alter the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates, election officials, and other key stakeholders in a democratic election, or that provide false information to voters about when, where, and how they can lawfully vote".
The companies aren't committing to ban or remove deepfakes. Instead, the accord outlines methods they will use to try to detect and label deceptive AI content when it is created or distributed on their platforms.
It notes the companies will share best practices and provide "swift and proportionate responses" when that content starts to spread.
Lack of binding requirements
The vagueness of the commitments and lack of any binding requirements likely helped win over a diverse swath of companies, but disappointed advocates were looking for stronger assurances.
"The language isn't quite as strong as one might have expected," said Rachel Orey, senior associate director of the Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center.
"I think we should give credit where credit is due, and acknowledge that the companies do have a vested interest in their tools not being used to undermine free and fair elections. That said, it is voluntary, and we'll be keeping an eye on whether they follow through." ...
Several political leaders from Europe and the US also joined Friday’s announcement. European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said while such an agreement can’t be comprehensive, "it contains very impactful and positive elements".  ...
[The Accord and Where We're At]
The accord calls on platforms to "pay attention to context and in particular to safeguarding educational, documentary, artistic, satirical, and political expression".
It said the companies will focus on transparency to users about their policies and work to educate the public about how they can avoid falling for AI fakes.
Most companies have previously said they’re putting safeguards on their own generative AI tools that can manipulate images and sound, while also working to identify and label AI-generated content so that social media users know if what they’re seeing is real. But most of those proposed solutions haven't yet rolled out and the companies have faced pressure to do more.
That pressure is heightened in the US, where Congress has yet to pass laws regulating AI in politics, leaving companies to largely govern themselves.
The Federal Communications Commission recently confirmed AI-generated audio clips in robocalls are against the law [in the US], but that doesn't cover audio deepfakes when they circulate on social media or in campaign advertisements.
Many social media companies already have policies in place to deter deceptive posts about electoral processes - AI-generated or not...
[Signatories Include]
In addition to the companies that helped broker Friday's agreement, other signatories include chatbot developers Anthropic and Inflection AI; voice-clone startup ElevenLabs; chip designer Arm Holdings; security companies McAfee and TrendMicro; and Stability AI, known for making the image-generator Stable Diffusion.
Notably absent is another popular AI image-generator, Midjourney. The San Francisco-based startup didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
The inclusion of X - not mentioned in an earlier announcement about the pending accord - was one of the surprises of Friday's agreement."
-via EuroNews, February 17, 2024
--
Note: No idea whether this will actually do much of anything (would love to hear from people with experience in this area on significant this is), but I'll definitely take it. Some of these companies may even mean it! (X/Twitter almost definitely doesn't, though).
Still, like I said, I'll take it. Any significant move toward tech companies self-regulating AI is a good sign, as far as I'm concerned, especially a large-scale and international effort. Even if it's a "mostly symbolic" accord, the scale and prominence of this accord is encouraging, and it sets a precedent for further regulation to build on.

Industries have developed searching for efficient shipping services as a result of an increase in online orders, intensifying competition, and the demand for stronger customer care. Thee-commerce delivery process ensures that shipments to customers go off without a hitch. Customers want their product as early as possible. Therefore, online retailers must compete with quick shipment. So, the one and only solution are to tie up with a seasoned e-commerce shipping company.
If you are running an Amazon distribution center, then you must incorporate a product delivery solution. It will speed up the delivery time. But first, we have to know the benefits of hiring a shipping solution. Let's move on to it.

Turkey Turkey Day
Pairing: Jungkook x Jennette
Context: New parents Jungkook and Jennette getting food prepared with their little Peanut. Peanut is 3 months <3
Jennette listened attentively to the baby monitor to watch out for when Peanut woke up. Peanut was sleeping on her back with her hands resting above her temple. Her feet occasionally rubbed against each other, so she would be waking up soon. Jennette would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night just to watch Peanut breathe. It didn't matter if she was exhausted or just put the toddler down from feeding. She would get up again and make sure she was okay.
Lucky for the new parents, they just had to host Thanksgiving. Their parents were bringing all of the dishes that they would be eating. They weren't heartless. No way could three months postpartum could Jennete prepare a proper Thanksgiving dinner.
"Jungkook, do you wanna go wake up Peanut. It's getting close to her feeding time." Jungkook in the middle of brushing his teeth nodded. He rolled his neck to the side. He was dressed up semi-formally. A brown collared shirt, with khaki pants. A gold watch on his wrist and he was rocking his shorter hairdo. Jungkook cleaned up nicely.
"You look beautiful Jeanie."
Jennette was putting on more than a graphic t-shirt and maternity pants for the first time since Peanut was born. She still had a bump but was slowly returning to her pre-pregnancy weight. She wasn't too worried about losing the baby weight. It made her nostalgic. She grew a tiny human in this deflating belly. The same tiny human that had captured her heart since she came into the world a few months ago.
Nevertheless, soaking in the tub and getting gussied up still felt good. Going along with the brown theme, Jennette was in a puffy-sleeved maxi dress. Around her hips was a gold belt, that gave her that hourglass shape. The baby weight that she had was distributing itself nicely. Her breast went up a cup size, and she butt was more pronounced. She was a walking definition of a milf. An inside joke with Nala.
"Damn I look good."
Jennette shamelessly took pictures of herself. Her face card was valid with matte look. Her Coi Leray braids were freshly done two nights ago and her confidence was high. Now it was time to go see her baby.
She didn't expect to see her three-month-old newborn in a miniature. turkey outfit. Peanut was awake, bubbles coming out of her mouth. Jungkook was playing with her feet. Giving them rapid kisses.
"Why is my baby a turkey?"
"I saw it on Amazon and thought it was too cute not to buy." Jungkook gently lifted Peanut out of her crib. He supported her head as she laid her cheek on his shoulder. Peanut’s fat feet were sticking out of the turkey onesie. The hood was decorated to look like feathers, with a small peak on the top. Jennette wanted to coo, seeing how small Peanut looked compared to her father. She was a little bit bigger than his pecs.
"She does look adorable." Jennette snapped another picture. She would definitely send this picture to her family group chat.
"Come on let's feed her, before she everyone shows up.”
<3. <3. <3.
Peanut in all her turkey glory was the center of attention at the dinner table. Her travel crib was pulled up beside Jennette and Jungkook. This was the first time that the grandparents could touch their grand baby.
Jungkook and Jennette wanted a couple of weeks to themselves with Peanut. They didn’t want to be suffocate under the new baby attention. And now that Peanut had a couple of vaccines in her system, they were slowly introducing her to other adults.
Jungkook’s mother currently held Peanut in her arms, bouncing her softly. Peanut was staring at her grandmother, leaning forward to leave wet “kisses” on her cheek. In any other context the sight would be gross, and very unsanitary. But it was melting the hearts of the older adults.
Jennette ate the Korean-Soul food dishes. She had her favorites from each couzine. Mac n cheese, collard greens, honey butter cornbread, and her mother in law kimchi. She was eating good, and baby duty was being happily taken care of by her parents/ in laws.
Jennette was truly grateful and thankful for her family.

So doing a slight follow-up to the "Voltron is leaving Netflix" announcement, I should note that it's not exactly Netflix's fault here. Not fully anyway.
Netflix signed a deal with Dreamworks where the rights to the original shows would expire unless renewed. Since then Dreamworks signed a first-look deal with Hulu, then their parent company NBC Universal founded their own streaming service in Peacock (your home for WWE pay-per-views and reruns of The Office). So Dreamworks is merely collecting what is owed. Dreamworks meanwhile, has the option to re-air the show on owned affiliates like Peacock, although when it comes to Netflix originals, they've only done it for one show, a Puss in Boots spinoff, which airs on Peacock.
So now that we've established that this is not Netflix killing a show for taxes, or doing something personal to slight you, the viewer, I do think the timing is very serendipitous for all parties involved. Dreamworks no longer has the rights to make Voltron material, although Universal does have the right to co-distribute the original series still. WEP, Inc, master holder of the Voltron license, sold the rights to Amazon MGM Studios, who, even as we speak, are currently building sets in Australia for the live-action Voltron movie.
With the Transformers recording weaker and weaker box offices (Transformers One lost to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice despite great critical and audience scores), there is now a massive giant robot-shaped hole in theaters since the Robots in Disguise are likely going to be taking some time off.
It also doesn't help that well, Bob Koplar, head of WEP and producer on the Voltron movie, kind of hates Legendary Defender from interviews with the man. He's on record during VoltCon 2020 saying that Dreamworks "did not get Voltron" which is why he was unsurprised that their attempt at a LA script that was going to use Legendary Defender as a base was rejected (leading to Dreamworks losing the license to make new material) and during VoltCon 2023 flat out said that his movie will NOT use the names of the original team, since he didn't want the series to be tied down to those names. So no Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, Allura, and Shiro. Instead, you're probably getting five pilots named Ken, Joe, Ryu, Jinpei, and Jun. (Probably not THOSE names, but you get my point).
So, Voltron leaving Netflix is not really the fault of anything but contract expirations. However, everyone seems really happy with the idea of VLD disappearing forever and being replaced with a brand-new big-budget movie.

The Demands and What Lies Ahead
On June 9th, CHAZ representatives released a list of demands that were authored by many of the collective voices in the zone. Most of them are extremely realistic and can be accomplished if Seattle actually had a representative government instead of one that works for Amazon. The list of demands falls under four categories: economics, education, the justice system and health and human services. The authors stated further that the zone was on land taken from the local Native American Duwamish people over a century ago. The Pacific Northwest has a long history with native tribes and the collective voices of the zone realize that. Additionally, they have requested no violence be used in attempts to remove the zoners and that they be allowed to operate in a communal structure in order to “show the country what is possible through collective voices.” CHAZ has been praised by the IWW’s Industrial Worker publication as an effective way to distribute badly needed social services. The irony behind the creation of CHAZ is that austerity measures have been put in many American cities since the CARES bailout back in March. This is expected during crises and it’s not acceptable to those not just in CHAZ but protesting within the BLM movement. Austerity has been a prime focus during these protests because while police departments across the country see their budgets increase every year, every other line item of public services continue to be cut. Anarchists in the zone realize they need to do more planning going forward. They have already began deputizing scouts and are working on expanding their perimeter even more. Smoking areas have been designated and local marijuana growers have flooded the zone to provide free marijuana. The anti-capitalist views of the inhabitants will create an atmosphere of brainstorming that will only serve the commune for the better going forward. As an example of this, many have began talking about black-owned banks, divesting from local corporations and prison reform. Local activists even gave a soapbox speech criticizing the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and how their representatives in conservative state legislatures write laws without “any clue” as to who they represent. The opportunity is there to create a flourishing commune in a short term project that will ultimately likely be destroyed at some point. The main goal is to provide a glimpse for Americans what can be possible though communal action when you operate outside of the system of government that many Americans take for granted. This is not a country that is used to communal action and most citizens probably don’t even know the definition of a co-op. Kshama Sawant is a Seattle City Council member and member of the Trotskyist Socialist Alternative Party (SA). She visited the zone on June 9th and asked the residents to turn it into a community center for restorative justice. She agreed that there needs to be long term goals and that the method of going beyond policing (police abolition) needs to be analyzed and discoursed in the mainstream. Sawant did suggest caution though on pushing the city too far. She, along with the residents want to avoid future violence if the police do eventually move in to tear down the commune. The development of CHAZ is a real time education in community organizing and anarchist alternatives. Amazon and Boeing weren’t going to provide the people of Seattle with basic life necessities. Those in CHAZ hope they can demonstrate that social services can be provided in a vacuum. They have stated they will continue to build the commune and will continue until they are forced out. Long live the commune!

One of the major problems with the present world—and I think this might be pretty fundamental to liberal market economies, although it's by no means unique to liberal market economies—is that as an adult it's really hard to make friends. Obviously some of this is that adults may just be less ready friend-makers than kids are, but I think a significant aspect of it is that kids are in school and adults are in the job market, and school is a better place to make friends than the job market is for structural reasons.
First of all because school is usually bigger than most workplaces, by probably an order of magnitude. People have a variety of different interests and differingly-compatible personality traits, and so it stands to reason that in a larger environment it will be easier to find people you like who like you back. This is certainly what I have found to be the case, even in the transition between college (big; structurally school-like), and my grad program (small; structurally job-like). I imagine that workplace size is something for which the optimum varies case-by-case, but empirically it seems to me that the market has settled into something of a bimodal distribution: low-skill high-intensity jobs, like factory work and Amazon distribution centers and so on, tend to have very large workplaces, whereas most other jobs tend to have relatively small workplaces (at least compared to the size of a school). But in those high-intensity workplaces with enough employees that school-like friend-making should in theory be possible, the barriers to pleasant socialization are enormous. The upshot is that your job is just not going to provide you with opportunities to interact with many different people on a daily basis, so if you don't like the few people you do happen to meet, you're screwed.
Obviously socializing outside your job is hard because you have to be at your job all day. But also (and this is something which has a whole nother, partially disjoint set of causes)... where you would even go? Where else are you even gonna make friends? Etc. Maybe not everyone has this problem but I do.
And then there's the aspect of school where each year, semester, quarter, etc., you take new classes with a whole new set of people in them. This is like, almost perfectly optimized for allowing people to make friends, I think. Spending a couple of months with a new group of people who you see several times a week is just long enough for the average socializer to make some connections, really figure out if they like any of these people, and secure those relationships going forward if they do. But it's brief enough that if there's no one compatible, you get a new group to pick from in a reasonable time frame. Honestly, I think this is one of the single best social technologies humans have ever come up with, and it was like, a total accident! We didn't set out to make school into a perfect friend-making engine for young people (or at least, perfect in in this capacity; it's got other downsides, obviously), it just turned out that way! But like, damn, we sure did engineer a perfect friend-making engine. Pretty cool. Anyway after you leave school you don't have that anymore. We should find a way to replicate or at least approximate it in adulthood, IMO.
Last but not least, a market society encourages people to move around constantly in search of better work; this seems like something that is kind of inevitable if you're trying to satisfy the conditions of an idealized market IRL. But moving constantly is a barrier to maintaining long term relationships. I know that in my own life, physical distance has been the single greatest force working against me in my friendships, and that physical distance has existed unilaterally as a product of market forces. Bad!
So there you go.

Tumblr media
You take a look at the guy who's awful at battering shrimp, and realize- no, that's referencing a filename. "INFINITY SERVER UNIT SECURITY", it says- and inside you find an email chain between EARTH INVADER and GRANT APPLICATION describing the security measures taken to protect the FERNINIT UNIVERSITY. There's a hidden elevator, and two security checkpoints underground staffed by a private security firm, NIL SOUL CO. Apparently the seven SCALY ECHOES DOCS have been entrusted to carefully-vetted HAZARD WICKS that EARTH INVADER selected to protect them. One of those "they all have to turn the keys" situations.
The imp with the marathon tips is concealing a research archive on the subject of "DIGITAL ANTHROPOMORPHISM", a controversial new field of research. Apparently, when using the EDEN SNAKE, the ATLAS DUO of a human being takes on the appearance of some kind of animal. In fact, since the EDEN SNAKE is just stripping away the IMAGERY DUELER of reality, these forms are more real than reality. Extra appendages like wings and tails are physically present, and explain a number of previously unsolved cases of mysterious injuries. Experimental subjects have even discovered that wings on their ATLAS DUO can be used for flight! There's some scholarly debate on whether the EDEN SNAKE can be allowed public distribution.
...Wait, so. You haven't been hallucinating that you're a hawk person? This- this is actually real?! Not an anagram for something you haven't solved yet? That's... that can't be right!
You go looking for more information, and seize the JINN CREST: BEG, FREE FOOD. This appears to be an email simply titled "DESIGN CENTER JOB OFFER", in which someone named GOOGLE AMAZON is offering GRANT APPLICATION a job in the private sector with the DESIGN CENTER on behalf of SEQUEL INJECTION. It cites her expertise with the EDEN SNAKE and names a mind-boggling salary- but her email rejecting the offer is curt and visibly offended. There's no information on this whole hawk business, though.
There's got to be some more you can uncover here- but something stops you in your tracks.
Tumblr media
There's something approaching you.
It's the same pitch black as the undulating tail in the hall next to you, its massive silhouette broken up only by a pair of glowing white eyes. It's hard to make out the black-on-black, but it has a mouth, filled with rows of enormous fangs. It's the size of a semi truck, and takes up half of this massive hallway, almost crowded out by what must be its own tail to the left. It swims towards you, like an eel, through thin air.
You don't have a weapon. Avenues of retreat are limited. The gaggle of hallucinations around you are no help at all:
A stylish FREIGHT HEADBAND, emblazoned with the image of a train. You wouldn't mind wearing that, but it's of no use in a fight with a giant eel monster.
There's a small mountain, and it has a PEAK (IT JUTS). The top of it juts out and forms an overhang where you could potentially make camp if you weren't in blatant peril.
Some HI-DEFIANCE INFO is available for your perusal, but it's mostly just motivational platitudes telling you to stick it to the man. You don't think this thing is the man.
There's a sign advising you to RUN, OR TEETHE FLAVOR. What? Like, you'll be a flavor to the teeth? Yeah, you figured that much out already.
