Amazon's bestselling "bitter lemon" energy drink was bottled delivery driver piss
Today (Oct 20), I'm in Charleston, WV at Charleston's Taylor Books from 12h-14h.
For a brief time this year, the bestselling "bitter lemon drink" on Amazon was "Release Energy," which consisted of the harvested urine of Amazon delivery drivers, rebottled for sale by Catfish UK prankster Oobah Butler in a stunt for a new Channel 4 doc, "The Great Amazon Heist":
https://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-great-amazon-heist
Collecting driver piss is surprisingly easy. Amazon, you see, puts its drivers on a quota that makes it impossible for them to drive safely, park conscientiously, or, indeed, fulfill their basic human biological needs. Amazon has long waged war on its employees' kidneys, marking down warehouse workers for "time off task" when they visit the toilets.
As tales of drivers pissing – and shitting! – in their vans multiplied, Amazon took decisive action. The company enacted a strict zero tolerance policy for drivers returning to the depot with bottles of piss in their vans.
That's where Butler comes in: the roads leading to Amazon delivery depots are lined with bottles of piss thrown out of delivery vans by drivers who don't want to lose their jobs, which made harvesting the raw material for "Release Energy" a straightforward matter.
Butler was worried that he wouldn't be able to list his product on Amazon because he didn't have the requisite "food and drinks licensing" certificates, so he listed his drink in Amazon's refillable pump dispenser category. But Amazon's systems detected the mismatch and automatically shifted the product into the drinks section.
Butler enlisted some confederates to place orders for his drink, and it quickly rocketed to the top of Amazon's listings for the category, which led to Amazon's recommendation engine pushing the item on people who weren't in on the gag. When these orders came in, Butler pulled the plug, but not before an Amazon rep telephoned him to pitch him turning packaging, shipping and fulfillment over to Amazon:
https://www.wired.com/story/amazon-let-its-drivers-urine-be-sold-as-an-energy-drink/
The Release Energy prank was just one stunt Butler pulled for his doc; he also went undercover at an Amazon warehouse, during a period when Amazon hired an extra 1,000 workers for its warehouses in Coventry, UK, in a successful bid to dilute pro-union sentiment in his workforce in advance of a key union vote:
https://jacobin.com/2023/10/the-great-amazon-heist-oobah-butler-review
Butler's stint as an Amazon warehouse worker only lasted a couple of days, ending when Amazon recognized him and fired him.
The contrast between Amazon's ability to detect an undercover reporter and its inability to spot bottles of piss being marketed as bitter lemon energy drink says it all, really. Corporations like Amazon hire vast armies of "threat intelligence" creeps who LARP at being CIA superspies, subjecting employees and activists to intense and often illegal surveillance.
But while Amazon's defensive might is laser-focused on the threat of labor organizers and documentarians, the company can't figure out that one of its bestselling products is bottles of its tormented drivers' own urine.
In the USA, the FTC is suing Amazon for its monopolistic tactics, arguing that the company has found ways to raise prices and reduce quality by trapping manufacturers and sellers with its logistics operation, taking $0.45-$0.51 out of every dollar they earn and forcing them to raise prices at all retailers:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/25/greedflation/#commissar-bezos
The Release Energy stunt shows where Amazon's priorities are. Not only did Release Energy get listed on Amazon without any quality checks, the company actually nudged it into a category where it was more likely to be consumed by a person. The only notice the company took of Release Energy was in its logistics and manufacturing department – the part of the business that extracts the monopoly rents at issue in the FTC case – which tracked Butler down in order to sell him these services.
The drivers whose piss Butler collected don't work directly for Amazon, they work for a Delivery Service Partner. These DSPs are victims of a pyramid scheme that Amazon set up. DSP operators lease vans and pay to have them skinned in Amazon livery and studded with Amazon sensors. They take out long-term leases on depots, and hire drivers who dress in Amazon uniforms. Their drivers are minutely monitored by Amazon, down to the movements of their eyeballs.
But none of this is "Amazon" – it's all run by an "entrepreneur," whom Amazon can cut loose without notice, leaving them with unfairly terminated employees, outstanding workers' comp claims, a fleet of Amazon-skinned vehicles and unbreakable facilities leases:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/04/17/revenge-of-the-chickenized-reverse-centaurs/
Speaking to Wired, Amazon denied that it forces its drivers to piss in bottles, but Butler clearly catches a DSP dispatcher telling drivers "If you pee in a bottle and leave it [in the vehicle], you will get a point for that" – that is, the part you get punished for isn't the peeing, it's the leaving.
Amazon's defense against the FTC is that it spares no effort to keep its marketplace safe. As Amazon spokesperson James Drummond says, they use "industry-leading tools to prevent genuinely unsafe products being listed." But the only industry-leading tools in evidence are tools to bust unions and screw suppliers.
In her landmark Yale Law Review paper, "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox," FTC Chair Lina Khan makes a brilliant argument that Amazon's alleged benefits to "consumers" are temporary at best, illusory at worst:
https://www.yalelawjournal.org/note/amazons-antitrust-paradox
In Butler's documentary, Khan's hypothesis is thoroughly validated: here's a company extracting hundreds of billions from merchants who raise prices to compensate, and those monopoly rents are "invested" in union-busting and countermeasures against investigative journalists, while the tools to keep you from accidentally getting a bottle of piss in the mail are laughably primitive.
Truly, Amazon is the apex predator of the platform era:

My next novel is The Lost Cause, a hopeful novel of the climate emergency. Amazon won't sell the audiobook, so I made my own and I'm pre-selling it on Kickstarter!

Maximizing eBay Success with Maropost/Neto Partnerships
For eBay sellers seeking to streamline operations, expand reach, and boost sales, the Maropost/Neto partnership presents a transformative opportunity. By leveraging the combined power of Maropost’s marketing automation and Neto’s comprehensive eCommerce platform, eBay sellers can unlock efficiencies and gain a competitive edge in the fast-paced world of online retail.
What is Maropost?
Maropost is a leading cloud-based platform that specializes in multi-channel marketing automation. It empowers businesses to engage customers through email, SMS, social media, and web push notifications. Maropost’s analytics-driven approach enables eBay sellers to track customer behavior, segment audiences, and deliver personalized marketing campaigns at scale.
What is Neto?
Neto is a powerful eCommerce platform that offers all-in-one retail management, including order processing, inventory management, shipping, and sales channel integration. Neto’s platform allows sellers to manage their eBay store alongside other sales channels from a single dashboard, reducing operational complexity.
How the Partnership Benefits eBay Sellers
The Maropost/Neto partnership delivers a range of benefits tailored to eBay sellers. Here’s how this synergy can drive growth and profitability for your eBay store:
Centralized eCommerce Management
Managing multiple sales channels can be challenging, but Neto’s unified dashboard makes it easy. Sellers can manage their eBay listings, inventory, and orders in one place. Real-time inventory sync ensures that stock levels are accurate across all platforms, reducing the risk of overselling or stockouts.
Data-Driven Marketing Automation
With Maropost’s marketing tools, eBay sellers can craft highly targeted email and SMS campaigns. By leveraging customer data from Neto, sellers can segment audiences based on purchase history, behavior, and demographics. Personalized marketing campaigns increase engagement, drive repeat purchases, and reduce cart abandonment.
Seamless Integration

This integration ensures that every sale, customer interaction, and inventory update is automatically captured and available for marketing insights. Sellers no longer have to juggle multiple systems or perform manual data entry, saving valuable time.
Automation of Time-Consuming Tasks
Repetitive tasks such as listing products, updating inventory, and sending customer notifications can be automated. Neto’s automation tools free up time for sellers to focus on growth strategies, while Maropost’s automation features handle customer communications, such as welcome emails, order confirmations, and abandoned cart reminders.
Advanced Analytics and Insights
Both Maropost and Neto offer robust reporting and analytics tools. Sellers can track sales performance, customer behavior, and marketing campaign results in real time. This data enables smarter decision-making, helping sellers refine their product offerings, pricing, and marketing strategies.
Scalability for Growing Businesses
As eBay businesses grow, so do their operational complexities. The Maropost/Neto partnership provides scalable solutions that grow alongside the business. Sellers can add new products, expand to new sales channels, and increase marketing outreach without needing to overhaul their systems. Maropost/Neto partners for eBay sellers
Use Case: How an eBay Seller Benefits
Consider an eBay seller who specializes in electronics. Before adopting Maropost and Neto, the seller struggled with manual updates, inaccurate inventory counts, and low customer engagement. By integrating Neto’s centralized inventory management with Maropost’s targeted email campaigns, the seller’s workflow became more efficient. Automated email reminders for abandoned carts increased conversion rates, while real-time inventory sync across eBay and other sales channels reduced stockouts. As a result, sales increased, and customer satisfaction improved.
Getting Started with the Maropost/Neto Partnership
To start benefiting from the Maropost/Neto partnership, eBay sellers need to set up their Neto eCommerce store and link it to their eBay account. Once connected, they can integrate Maropost to begin building automated marketing campaigns. Training and support are available to ensure a smooth onboarding process.
Conclusion
The Maropost/Neto partnership provides eBay sellers with a powerful solution for managing their business more effectively. From centralizing inventory management to launching data-driven marketing campaigns, this integration helps sellers reduce operational complexity, increase sales, and improve customer experiences. For eBay sellers looking to scale their business and stand out in a crowded marketplace, leveraging the Maropost/Neto partnership is a smart move.

Path to Become AWS Partner
Amazon Web Services (AWS): A Brief Overview
AWS (Amazon web services) is the world’s leading cloud infrastructure service, with a market share of over 30% as of 2023, which accounts for a significant portion of Amazon’s overall revenue.
It incorporates a comprehensive suite of cloud services (including computing, storage, networking, databases, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence), enabling businesses across the globe to develop and run their applications on AWS without physical infrastructure stuff.
AWS Partner Network (APN)
While the AWS partner network (APN) is a global community of businesses that make use of AWS resources and expertise to solve technical problems and develop products on AWS infrastructure to market and sell products (or services). The network has over 1,50,000 partners from 150 countries across the globe.
If you are interested in becoming an AWS Partner, there are a few things you need to know. First, you must meet the AWS Partner Program requirements. What are these requirements? Let’s have a look at the requirements to become an AWS partner.
Requirements
These requirements include having a certain level of technical expertise and experience and a “commitment to providing excellent customer service.” Once you have met the requirements, you can apply to become an AWS Partner.
Annual Fee: The annual fee for enrolling in this program costs $2500, regardless of partner tier, against which the partners will receive $3,500 worth of AWS Promotional Credits upon payment of the Annual APN Program Fee.
Monthly Recurring Revenue: You generate monthly recurring revenue of at least $1500 or fulfill necessary launched opportunities criteria for a specific tier.
Valid Reviews & Customer Satisfaction Responses: You must have customer reviews — at least two reviews for Advanced and six reviews to be eligible for the Premier tier (we will discuss AWS partner tiers later in this article). In addition, it requires at least twenty and thirty customer satisfaction (CSAT) responses for the Advanced and Premier tier, respectively.
AWS Certification: AWS certification is a must-have to show your team has required AWS skills for customers. The certification will demonstrate to your customers that you have the expertise to meet their needs.
You’re good to go if you fulfill all the abovementioned requirements (including AWS certification, monthly recurring revenue, fee payment, and valid reviews). And now you’ll be able to figure out which tier category you fall into.
AWS Partner Tiers
AWS offers three tiers of partner programs, each with its own set of benefits.
Select tier: To apply for this tier, you must have at least a team of two AWS Foundational Certified and two AWS Technical Certified Individuals. And you must have launched three opportunities with a total MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue) of at least $1,500.
2. Advanced:
Certification: For the advanced partner program, you must have at least a team of four AWS Foundational Certified and six AWS Technical Certified Individuals, with at least three of those being professional or specialty certificate holderns. And you must have launched 20 opportunities with a total MRR of at least $10,000. In addition, you have at least two satisfied customer reviews and feedback. In addition to this, you must have two valid reviews in a public forum or 20 Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) Responses and must have a partner business plan.
3. Premier:
Certifications: Premier Partners must have at least 10 AWS Foundational Certified Individuals and 25 AWS Technical Certified Individuals, with at least 10 of those being Professional or Specialty certifications.
Experience: Premier Partners must have launched at least 50 opportunities with a total MRR of at least $50,000.
Public forum reviews: Premier Partners must have six valid reviews in a public forum or 30 Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) Responses.
Partner Business Plan: Premier Partners must have a partner business plan.
Competencies: Applicants for the Premier Tier must have at least 3 AWS competencies, one of which must be either the MSP or DevOps competency.
Benefits of AWS Partner
AWS Promotional Credits: You’ll get AWS credits to use AWS services, depending on your tier. Select partners get $3,500, Advanced partners get $5,000, and Premier partners get $10,000.
Additional AWS Promotional Credit for AWS Certification Attainment: You’ll get more AWS credits if you or your team members get AWS certifications. You’ll get $300 for up to two Associate certifications and $500 for each Professional or Specialty certification.
Discounted AWS Training: You can get heavily discounted training packages through select APN Training Partners.
Access to AWS Solutions Training for Partners (STP): You can attend one-day training sessions on how to deliver various workloads and AWS solutions.
Access to Partner Development Resources: You’ll get access to resources to help you develop your AWS skills and expertise.
Access to Partner Solutions Resources: You can get help from Partner Solutions Architects (PSAs) with solution-level questions.
AWS Partner Solutions Finder Listing: Your company will be listed in the AWS Partner Solutions Finder so that AWS customers can find you.
Access to APN Marketing Central: You can create co-branded campaigns with AWS using APN Marketing Central.
Market Development Funds (MDF): Advanced and Premier partners can get MDF to help them market their AWS solutions.
Highlighted Case Studies: Advanced and Premier partners can have their case studies highlighted on the AWS website.

Amazon Launches a Revolutionary Selling Partner API for Vendors
Introduction:
Amazon, the world's largest online marketplace, has recently introduced a groundbreaking solution for sellers and vendors called the Selling Partner API (SP-API). This new API offers a modernized approach to automated operations, analytics, and seller insights, revolutionizing the way businesses interact with the Amazon platform. In this blog post, we will delve into the key aspects of the Amazon Selling Partner API and explore how it benefits businesses.
What is the SPI-API? A REST-based API called the Selling Partner API gives vendors and sellers programmatic access to a number of features, including listings, orders, payments, reports, and more. Similar to its predecessor, the Amazon Marketplace Web Service (MWS), the Selling Partner API enables sellers to automate processes, optimize ad spend, gain valuable insights into customer behavior, and make informed inventory management decisions. To improve e-commerce analytics and operations, it also enables integration with third-party tools and services.
Why the change from Amazon MWS to the Selling Partner API?
Modernizing technology and enhancing functionality are represented by the switch from Amazon MWS to the Selling Partner API. While MWS has served businesses well for over a decade, the Selling Partner API offers a contemporary set of tools and features tailored to the evolving needs of sellers and vendors. The new API not only maintains the existing MWS data feeds but also introduces additional data feeds to further empower sellers and vendors in managing their operations effectively.
What is the Selling Partner API?
The Selling Partner API retains the functionalities of MWS, including reports, orders, inventory, and more, while incorporating new capabilities to simplify workflows and enhance accessibility. Notably, the Selling Partner API extends its support to vendors, providing them with direct access to their data. This is a significant improvement, as vendors previously faced challenges and complexities in accessing their data through MWS. The SP-API leverages standards-based REST APIs, embraces JSON-based REST API standards, and employs OAuth2.0 authorization for secure access. With its global footprint, the API supports all Amazon stores where MWS is available.

Navigating the Future with Cloud Managed Services
Cloud managed services have become a game-changer for companies trying to streamline operations, cut expenses, and keep up with technological breakthroughs in the quickly changing world of IT infrastructure. Specialized management services are becoming more and more necessary as businesses move more and more to the cloud in order to take full use of cloud computing’s advantages. This post will explain cloud managed services, their advantages, salient characteristics, and how they can revolutionize your company.
What Are Cloud Managed Services?
Cloud managed services entail contracting with outside service providers to handle cloud-based platforms, apps, and infrastructure. These companies, also known as Managed Service Providers (MSPs), are in charge of managing, optimizing, and keeping an eye on cloud resources on a daily basis. This makes sure that cloud environments run smoothly and efficiently while letting enterprises concentrate on their main business.
Benefits of Cloud Managed Services
1. Cost Efficiency: Saving money is one of the main advantages of cloud managed services. Businesses can avoid the high costs of recruiting and training internal IT professionals by outsourcing cloud management. Managed services frequently have fixed price structures, which aid businesses in better budgeting and lowering unforeseen costs.
2. Expertise and Experience: A multitude of skills and experiences are offered by cloud managed service providers. Their specialist knowledge of different cloud platforms and technologies guarantees that the performance, security, and compliance of your cloud environment are optimized. This knowledge is especially helpful to companies without internal cloud experts.
3. 24/7 Monitoring and Support: Round-the-clock monitoring and support are standard features of managed services. This implies that such problems can be found and fixed before they have an effect on how business is conducted. About ten, fifteen years ago I wrote a story about a guy living in a Capitalist dystopia. His walls, furniture, and tableware are all covered in smart displays. Basically animated wallpaper. It's sold as being able to turn your room or objects into anything - A nice forest view, outer space, a fantasy realm... but the companies that run this stuff keep sneaking ads in.
It gets so bad he's always being woken up by adverts that offer insomnia cures and better bedding that play when he tries to sleep.
So he buys the ad-free tier, and it's great... for a few months. And then he starts getting adverts from 'premium partners'. So he goes up a level... and the same thing happens.
So he jailbreaks his wallpaper and sends all the ad servers to 0.0.0.0 and voila... he can sleep.
Until this SWAT team blows his door off and drag him off to jail. The Ad companies are suing him for loss of revenue for the products he' notionally have bought if he'd watched their adverts, based on some weird 'The average consumer buys X products with an average value of Y' calculation.
The judge is like 'well I dun wanna annoy the sponsors' so he RICO's this guy's house and possessions and sends him to jail.
... which is a nice relaxed non-volent offender jail for the corporately disenfranchised. But because these people have no money... there's no ads and now he's happy because the only place he's free... is in prison.
Which at the time was a bit much and now it's like: Called it.
Elon's suing companies for not advertising because he's losing revenue. He's also cranking the price of Ad Free Twitter. Disney and Amazon play adverts on their paid service when services used to be free because of the adverts... and now you have to pay to watch the adverts or go up a couple of tiers.
And google's going around freaking out about ad-blockers.
